My Charlottesville: Lyn Bolen Warren of Les Yeux du Monde
Tumblr media
Lyn Bolen Warren, director and creator of the amazing art gallery Les Yeux du Monde, has called Charlottesville her home for the last 35 years, and has amassed quite a few favorites over that time period. Here, she shares the things that make Cville special for her.
Please share your Cville story. I came here for grad school in Art History and fell in love with the place. It felt like a “power spot”….very resonant…amazing people, gorgeous landscapes. I never wanted to leave.
Now for a list of favorites... Thing about the town: The combination of university and town has so much to offer. I needed to live somewhere with a great library and endless learning available. The university offers all this but the innovation that the town side brings is a perfect complement to the university. Cville has only gotten more rich in possibilities and offerings over the years I’ve been here from the Film Festival to the Book Festival and now the Tom Tom Festival.  I’ve always dreamed of our town being a DESTINATION for ART, too and that seems to be happening more and more with Matthew McClendon at the helm at the Fralin Museum and Kristen Chiacchia at Second Street Gallery and cool new hotels and residences that have art as part of their raison d’être pop up on Main Street. It’s very exciting. To me, Charlottesville’s always had a sense of “anything is possible.” It’s very creative and rich in opportunities and it has a beautiful landscape to boot.
Season: I love the fact that Cville has four distinct seasons and I’m always excited as they change. Fall and spring are a tie for favorite!
Side of town: I love the east side. For some reason, ever since grad school, I’ve lived off 20 North. It has beautiful landscapes and views, yet is still close to town.
Place for a drink: Common House
For breakfast / brunch: I love Blue Grass Grill.
For lunch: The Mill Room at Boar’s Head is lovely for a special lunch. It was recently renovated and they showcase super art.
For a special night out: I have so many great memories at C&O. But Ivy Inn is also special. There are endless great places to eat here and that’s another thing I love about Cville!
For comfort food: Tip Top
Hang out: It’s always home.
International cuisine: Fleurie! I go as often as I can, but I recently are there for restaurant week and wow, I had the best chocolate tart / cherry mousse dessert. But every course was amazing.
Coffee shop: C’ville Coffee
Event: I used to go to Foxfield religiously but got too busy with gallery hours. The naturalization ceremony at Monticello is a powerful and beautiful event.
Day trip:  Washington, D.C. for the museums
Road for  a scenic drive: Skyline Drive, and taking and I-64 to get to it.
Place to take a dip:  I prefer the beach; Pine Knoll Shores, NC.
Winery: Barboursville and the Ruins
Brewery: Starr Hill because it had its origin alongside my gallery’s first downtown spot! Thanks to generosity of Coran Capshaw who allowed me to have art there in the nascent days of the brewery.
Hair: Edgar (formerly of Reflections, now The Salon) has cut my hair for decades!  Love him.
Vet: Dr. Steve Epstein at Animal Hospital of Ivy Square is the BEST.
Shoes: Scarpa where else!
Clothes: Love Eloise and Scarpa
Food / Wine / Beer:  Foods of all Nations and Feast!
Music venue: We’re lucky to have so many great venues. But I do love The Paramount and the Pavillion.
