[ID: a multi-panel sequence of Bruce Wayne being exhausted and struggling to take a shower safely. The shower is in a large cube shape with a clear glass door, blue tile, and a drain on the floor. Bruce is facing away from the water with slumped shoulders as he hangs his head and rubs his face wearily. He tips his head back to feel the water on his face before having to stabilize himself on the wall. His back is bloodied and scratched as he struggles to keep his eyes open and heavily blinks. Then suddenly, Bruce collapses onto the floor. He comes to and cradles his bleeding head in a fetal position before forcing himself to be kneeling. From beyond the restroom door, Alfred concernly asks, “Have you fallen asleep in the shower, Master Bruce?” Bruce calls out he's fine. However, Alfred persists, “Have you had an accident in there? Do I need to cleam that room later?” Bruce tiredly pushes his hand through his hair and looks down at the floor drain—where his blood is already being washed away before responding “no”. END ID]

i'll tell you what converted me to being all-in on keeping cats indoors only:

living for a year and a half in a rural area with a sudden feral cat colony explosion on the property.

i moved in with my folks for a bit and at that time, one (1) stray cat mama had taken up residence on the property, but was too feral to let my mother anywhere near her. but especially after she brought three kittens around, mom fed her and the kittens in hopes they'd grow trusting enough she could catch for spay and neuter at the minimum. momcat stayed mean and hella wary, but the kittens would hang around a little nearer and play with my mom via long stick, but still wouldn't come close enough to touch or catch.

unfortunately, two of the three kittens were girls and started having kittens of their own before further progress was made, shortly after i moved in. and that was pretty much instant doom.

there were so many kittens. SO MANY. multiple litters. every time we turned around, more kittens.

we fed them. we hunted for and located the kittens every time anywhere on the property and would move them to a repurposed doghouse anytime a mama cat had them somewhere else, so that they could grow up human-socialized and we could spay/neuter them when they were old enough. (also it was a handy tactic to push the issue of the mamas getting more used to/trusting of us themselves. only really worked with one of them, though.)

and we watched them die.

we watched litter after litter of kittens never make it to the age they could be spayed or neutered. the moms stayed, for the longest time, too skittish to more than briefly touch, much less catch and crate for a vet visit.

it sounds like a silly joke to say i have kitten-related ptsd, but i absolutely do.

too many goddamn times i'd walk out of the garage and find the carport and gravel drive strewn with tiny bodies. others simply went missing, never to be found.

one in particular, i wish i hadn't found, and the visual literally haunts me still, almost a decade later.

i saw so many kittens die of snake bite, spider bite, wild dogs, birds of prey, hit by cars, respiratory illness, covered in fleas and eyes crusted with infection.

and we loved them all. scrimped for antibiotics if the vet could be convinced to give it to us despite our being unable to bring them in. bought flea collars and ointments. we cared for them and fed them and petted them and played with them, brushed their fur and cleaned up their little faces, put ice in their water in hot summer, rigged a heating lamp in their house in the winter.

and they died. horribly. that property is pocked with unmarked graves of kittens and cats.

all the best intentions, not enough resources, and it didn't matter anyways because the population went from three to almost twenty (at times, over thirty) in the blink of an eye.

they died and died and died. our hearts broke over and over again. the stress and anxiety wore us down like sandpaper. i think, by the end of it all, we managed to find less than 10 of them all homes, including batman the disabled kitten i found a home across the country through tumblr.

it was carnage and tragedy, frankly. and we were helpless.

it only ended because they started dying faster than they could be born, and because we finally caught the two remaining mom cats in traps and got them spayed.

the points about outdoor cats being invasive predators devastating to local wildlife populations is true and valid and important.

but i know cat people, and cat people who don't know better than to let cats outdoors. what matters to you is the cat itself, generally. the cat being happy and taken care of.

keeping cats outdoors, letting them outdoors, is not taking care of the cats. it's not protecting them. it's not giving them any happiness or invigoration that couldn't be provided to them as indoor-only pets with just a little research and effort.

they die. they get ill. they get hurt. they're at risk of predators, and cars, and disease, and carelessly cruel children and deliberately cruel adults. they're at risk of disappearing on you because someone else saw a cat outdoors and intervened to give it a better, safer life not in conflict with the local environment.

and if that offends and angers you that someone would just take a cat they saw roaming outdoors, even collared, and that it sounds like i'm endorsing that, i am, but not if you intervene and be that person yourself for your own cat.

if what matters to you is doing right by your cat because it's family and a living creature whose happiness and health and safety is important to you,

keep them indoors. not part time. always. exclusively.

edit: since apparently i need to clarify this, i'm saying cats should live inside, that they should not live outdoors, even part time. visiting the outdoors supervised on a leash or in an enclosed catio is not the same as even part-time living outside, and i am certainly not advocating against it.

jason gets captured and tortured and inadvisably makes his way out of the building even though he's exacerbating his wounds bc he doesnt want to risk waiting for a father bat that will never come. bruce does get there in time and jay recovers at the manor, to his great annoyance and reluctant warmth.

(tbf, literally any time jason contemplates the teenage years he missed out on due to his death etc., i cry lol.)

one of the ones with a more even focus on everyone. id actually say it's about bruce. feels are good tho, and jason does get a hug. the bat boys get sent back in time and find a bruce that just started being batman standing in front of his parents' graves and wondering if he should stop being batman to find happiness in marriage. the boys unanimously decide to convince bruce to give up the bat so he can be happy, even though it majorly risks their own futures (and in dami's case, his actual life).

this is kind of fantasy realism? and this is another fic that focuses more evenly on everyone. bruce keeps finding these kids that arent really human, adopting them and giving them a childhood (and family!) anyways. it's sweet and my favourite thing about it is that the boys all pass around bruce's gotham knights sweater for comfort clothing. also there's a part where john constantine is like "h o w do you keep finding them?!?!" it's good lol. ah and i just love when stories explore what it means to be human.

this is a dick pov fic that goes through the aftermath of a time loop only jason remembers. it's not often you get to read about the after effects instead of the time loop itself, which i thought was cool, and it goes into the way jason and his relationship to the family has changed bc of this thing only he remembers. focuses most heavily on dick & jay.

History:

c. 1280 B.C: Princess Chay-Ara is born in Egypt.

c. 1255 B.C: Chay-Ara, along with her beloved Khufu, the wizard Nabu, and champion Teth-Adam, come across the wreckage of a Thanagarian ship, laden with the mysterious Nth metal. The two use the alien technology to bring peace to their land and build incredible wonders.

C. 1240 B.C: Khufu and Chay-Ara are murdered by the priest Hath-Set, destined to be reincarnated into new bodies.

1917 A.D: Chay-Ara is reincarnated into the body of newborn Shiera Saunders.

1940 A.D.: 

Shiera meets Carter Hall, the reincarnation of Khufu, and her memories of her past lives return. She dons a costume similar to his and becomes Hawkgirl.

Hall and Saunders first encounter Dr. Anton Hastor, the modern reincarnation of Hath-Set.

The pair become founding members of the Justice Society of America, with Hall acting as their first chairman.

1941 A.D: President Franklin Roosevelt calls on Hawkgirl and the rest of the JSA to join the war effort, fighting on the home front as members of the All-Star Squadron.

1947 A.D: Hall and Saunders first encounter Jim Craddock, the Gentleman Ghost.

1951 A.D: As part of a scheme from Per Degaton, the Justice Society is called before the House Un-American Activities Commission, and forced to either reveal their true identities, or disband. Saunders, alongside many of his comrades, chooses to disband the team.

1953 A.D: Hall and Saunders are married, and have a son, Hector. They also discover the kingdom of Feithera, and adopt one of the avian humanoid natives, Norda, as their godson.

1979 A.D: Hall and Saunders are murdered by Hastor, and reincarnate as Thanagarian police officers Katar Hol and Shayera Thal.

18 years ago: Hol and Thal come to Earth, becoming members of the Justice League of America, and fast friends with Ray Palmer, the Atom.

14 years ago: Thal severs ties with Thanagar after the planet declares war on neighboring planet Rann.

10 years ago: Thal dies and Hol is gravely injured while helping to repel the invasion of Earth by an alien alliance that included Thanagarians among their number. Chay-Ara’s spirit enters the body of Kendra Saunders, Shiera’s niece, after Kendra fails to commit suicide.

7 years ago: 

Attempting to avoid the destiny that people say is written out for her, Saunders joins the Justice Society, becoming romantically involved with Sanderson Hawkins.

The reborn Carter joins the new JSA as well, and successfully convinces Kendra to relocate with him to St. Roch, Louisiana. Kendra finishes her film degree at St. Roch University.

6 years ago: Kendra answers Batman’s summons to join the Justice League after the active membership vanishes to ancient Atlantis.  

5 years ago: 

Ray Palmer is murdered by his ex-wife, Jean Loring, under the control of Eclipso. In response, Hall nearly murders Loring in cold blood, only stopped by the intervention of Kendra.

Kendra and Carter are called upon to fight in the war between Rann and Thanagar. While Carter remains on Thanagar, Kendra returns to Earth to put some distance between the two of them.

4 years ago: Kendra moves to Los Angeles, also joining the restructured Justice League and starting a relationship with Roy Harper.

3 years ago: Carter returns to Earth, only to be swept up in the Blackest Night. He and Kendra are seemingly killed by the reanimated Black Lantern corpse of Ray Palmer, but survive thanks to the curse placed on their reincarnation.

1 year ago: Kendra reluctantly accompanies Carter when he invites her to learn the secret of their past lives together.

Present day: Kendra is offered the reins of a major motion picture, and struggles to divide her time between her job and hero work.

Commentary:

And now: Kendra “screw destiny” Saunders. I went into most of the detail on the Hawks in Carter’s post, so here I’ll be focusing on what’s unique to Kendra, her ongoing fight against the pull she feels toward Carter, which is Chay-Ara’s spirit guiding her back toward her “soulmate.”

Due to a wrench thrown into the works of Khufu and Chay-Ara’s reincarnation cycle, Kendra doesn’t have the privilege of having memories of her past lives. Being Kendra Saunders is all she’s ever known, and she doesn’t care what her fate is, she wants to live her life how she chooses, especially if that means dating other men just to spite Carter.

Kendra’s got a troubled past and a fierce independent streak as she toes the line between embracing her destiny and outright rejecting it - despite everything, she still wears a variation on Shiera’s uniform, and still finds herself by Carter’s side more often than she’d really like. Will she fall victim to fate and end up linked to him again? Only time will tell.

DrSilverfish S14 Meta Masterpost

Well, what a wild ride S14 has been. An extremely rich season for meta, and one of the best seasons of the show, ever (in my view, YMMV). It’s been a blast sharing it with all of you, week by week, on the hoof. Thanks for all the discussion, shared sleuthing and musing, gifs, art, fic, meta and more. 

And thanks also to all the readers of, and commenters on, this blog. Reading the tags and replies on Tumblr is still one of the best things. 

High points? The writers’ room’s use of mythology (Greek, Biblical, folktale) this season has been rich and satisfying, but in particular their borrowing of Jung’s psychological drama of the encounter between the Self and the Shadow-self, and his interpretation of alchemical writing as representative of the journey of the psyche towards self-integration (for the alchemists, the journey of the soul to God) has been really beautifully crafted. 

Also, all the call-backs to previous seasons and episodes of the show, as part of Dabb’s Ouroboros narrative, used to shed light both on the past and the present; even down to matching the call backs numerologically for more snake-swallowing-its-own-tail symmetry. 

Stand out episode for me was 14x14 Ouroboros. Steve Yockey is a kick-ass writer and a master of subtext. Noah Ophis the Queer Gorgon was not only a fabulous queer villain but the call-back to Nick the Siren and 4x14 Sex and Violence really reflected on and demonstrated the show’s evolution, as we near the end of the spiral (it’s ages since any female characters have been called a “bitch” or a “whore” for one thing - phew).

Also a shout-out to Meredith Glynn’s 14x08 Byzantium for its lovely re-encounter re Castiel’s relationship to Heaven, his heart-crushing (and uber fairy-tale romantic) deal with The Shadow, as well as for revisiting the awesome Lily Sunder and adding Anubis to the SPN God-machine! 

And to Davy Perez 14x11 Damaged Goods for the most subtextually obvious but also tragically heart-breaking, reference to the Ma’lak box as the closet, thanks to Dean showering sparks all over Donna’s 1970s cowboy porn poster collection whilst building it. 

Andrew Dabb and Meredith Glynn’s 14x13 Lebanon was excellent too; lovely script, outstanding performances from the original Winchester family, a beautiful little side-meditation on who Castiel would have been, if he hadn’t raised Dean from perdition, and some more alchemical symbolism via the “pearl of great price” (AKA the Philosopher’s Stone). 

Meghan Fitzmartin and Yockey’s 14x15 Peace of Mind, was also stand-out, for its biting satire both of MAGA and Heaven, its hilarious whammied Sam (truly one of Jared’s great performances, up there with his Lucifer in The End) and its lashings of queer subtext (from Dean’s fascination with, and anxiety about,  the “snake”, to Castiel’s mirrored heavy improv involvement with Sunny’s dick-worshiping erotic epistles). 

Finally, Dabb and Sgriccia delivered a gorgeously shot, and epic, finale in 14x20 Moriah, the culmination of Dean’s long and painful encounter with the internalised Ghost of John Winchester in his psyche, as he faced, Ouroboros style, a yellow-eyed “monster” who had (apparently) killed Mary Winchester (again) and THE Father, ordering him to continue his own father’s revenge cycle. Chuck Shurley, avatar of God, ultimate dead-beat Dad and author of the SPN multi-verse, is set up to be the meta villain for the final season, as his characters struggle for true free will. 

Here’s hoping MIRROR UNIVERSE and all those zombies busting out of their graves are indeed a giant neon metaphor for the culminating revenge of SPN’s eternal queer subtext.    

Low-point of the season; re-fridging Mary Winchester as part of the Ouroboros narrative, even though Glynn and Berens handled her “death” episodes (14x17 and 14x18) beautifully. Re-staging the drama of Azazel, fathers and sons, as part of the story spiral was, of course, irresistable, and profound for our male hero characters; I get it. But, as I am still convinced this is a fake-out, Mary is not really dead, and we will see her again (see my meta from 14x17 onwards) I’m willing to wait before I write my final meta on the show’s relationship to the feminine principle (spoiler alert, a load of suckage along the way, with the possiblity for a, somewhat contingent, writers’ room redemption arc!). I am hoping both Amara, as the feminine God-principle, and Mary (they are already fundamentally linked) will return in the culmination of the narrative. Symbolically, even given this is, indelibly, a narrative about men and the bonds between them, that return of/ integration with the feminine would be the alchemical and Jungian culmination of the journey, and I’m hoping that’s what Dabb is going deliver; via Jack (Hermes/ Mercury) as the mediating principle.  

As I’m sure you all are, I’m in equal measure gutted and excited that S15 is to be the final turn of the spiral.

Wonder Woman Movie Review

SPOILER ALERT IS IN AFFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 

Before I get down to the review, an anecdote; 

Yesterday, right after I rode about 120 streets worth of the spectacular concrete jungle that is Manhattan, my dad and I caught the rush hour traffic out of the city. While stuck in the gridlock on the Upper West Side, I pleaded with him to get tickets for tonight’s late showing of the new D.C. Summer Blockbuster, Wonder Woman. Being more of a D.C. fan than a Marvel Fan (Forever Batman, y’all( I had to, just had to, see the DCEU’s attempt to reroute the dreadful course it had set for itself with last year’s anticipated, yet somewhat questionable, Batman vs Superman, Dawn of Justice. 

After the 841st time I pleaded with him (and yes, I counted), he finally caved. Huzzah! On to movietickets.com I went to try and score great seating at the AMC owned Starflex Theather that’s near my house. Unfortunately, every showtime I checked for tonight, between the hours of 9 and 10:30 were booked solid.

Same friggin thing happen for Saturday night (I had underestimated the popularity Wonder Woman would garner). 

Now, I am a creature of habit, especially when it comes to movies. I always aim to got this exact cinema, get the perfect seating (3/4ths of the way from the screen, straight down the middle of the aisle), get there half an hour early, and buy all my movie snacks 10 minutes before i enter the movie starts (to ensure that when I start eating it like a starved pig, it would last me until I’m 15 minutes into the film). 

Instead, my dad had me buy tickets for a movie theater that was;

A. Farther away from my house.

B. More expensive in terms of tickets and snacks.

and C. NO RESERVED SEATING (EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Do I sound spoiled? 

Yes. 

But after what I just told you, can you blame me?

Also Yes. 

Enough about my spoiled ass, on to the review!

I entered the movie without any high expectations. After seeing the last couple of films DCEU introduced in order to combat the MCU, I was pretty nervous to see how DC can screw up a solo film for a female lead.

Keep in mind, Female leads/stand alone superhero films have not been successful, to say the least (Halle Berry’s Cat Woman or Jennifer Gardner’s Elektra, anyone?). So, to be fair, I came in with a few doubts.

Those doubts now lay dead in a shallow grave outside of a Chuck E. Cheeses.

A breath of fresh air from the crap-fest that the DCEU has been serving us the past four years, Wonder Woman brings is a truly magnificent origin story for one of comic’s most revered and inspiring role models, for men and women alike. 

Gal Gadot’s portrayal of the Themyscirian Royal/Amazon Warrior was very similar in quality to that of Ben Affleck’s Batman; humanistic, sincere, and flowed well with the direction director Zac Snyder was taking. Gadot portrays Diana as passionate, empathetic, and optimistic. She gives Diana this desire to be heroic in the face of danger, to be a shining light and savior for those that can’t defend themselves; a true hero, so to say.

As is the trend of these modern superhero adaptations, Gadot also gives Diana a sense of Humanity. After she leaves Themyscira, Diana enters the “world of man”, where she is horrified by the direction that mankind has taken in life. Overcrowded and smog-filled cities, women being treated/viewed as second class citizens, not to mention the “war to end all wars” going on in the midst of all this, Mankind has become ugly and corrupted in Diana’s eyes yet she still believes that they are only this way because they are under the so-called “spell” of the God of War, Aries (portrayed by Daniel Thewlis).

While this humanistic quality makes Gadot’s Wonder Woman more relatable to audience, it also makes her pretty naive. As she arrives in London, she is exposed to all of this new-age technology that she has never seen before. Like a child, she questions and touches everything she sees, wanting to learn more about it. In the outfit montage that she undergoes, she settles with a look that is more fitting for a man of the era than for a woman (it was also a nice easter egg/reference to earlier live action portrayals of Wonder Woman/Diana Prince). As Diana travels with Steve Trevor (portrayed by Chris Pine) and his band of misfits to the front of the War, she learns that not everything is as simple as she thought. While she wants and tries everything she can to save everyone, it is not enough. She witnesses innocent people suffering from the amount of destruction and chaos that this war has brought on, and all she can do is move forward towards her main goal; killing Aries.

In her final battle with Aries, we see a sort of “coming of age” moment for Diana; she realizes that while there is darkness and hatred within all of mankind, there is also light, love, and selflessness within them all. Through this realization, Diana learns that the world is not black and white in terms of morality. It is multi-colored and layered, with so many different point of views and opinions that every person on Earth possess. Sure, some might agree with certain ideas, but they are not all the same. Everyone is in control of their own morality. Some are good, some are evil. And you can’t change that, not even if you’re a god/spawn of Zeus.

Overall, I thought the movie was a great step in the right direction for the DCEU. I see Wonder Woman as a prime example that standalone female superhero movies can work (Where’s that Black Widow solo film? Your move, Marvel). the only criticism I have about the film is the ending of it. It felt a bit rushed and cheesy, which is a consistent issue that the DCEU has been facing since Man of Steel. I hope that when they release Justice League this coming December, they’ll have that solved.
