Rolling her eyes, she then flipped her hair to the side and sat up straight as she was ready to head on out. “And they say I’m dramatic.” she mumbled at first before breaking out into a genuine smile. Nik was doing the most to keep her spirits up and she appreciated it wholeheartedly, therefore she patted his hand and said, “Thanks for doing this. Now let's go before they catch us...I swear they just want me bed ridden."

It had been a while since Ruhi had lived with someone. In fact, aside from wanting the experience when she was in college, she had no real reason to stay with a roommate at all. She was well enough resourced to have been able afford a place on her own even when she was just barely a functioning adult. Nonetheless, after years of just being on her own, there was an adjustment period, getting used to living with someone else again. But after a few weeks, she was grateful to have Nikhil around. They were friends before anything else, and though their schedules did not always align, it was still comforting to have a friendly face to come back to. As his voice filled their house, she waited for him to eventually find her, nodding along to his words while she allowed herself a pre-dinner pudding cup. So when he finally entered the hall, Ruhi looked at him with amusement. “Pudding?” She offered, both to him and as an answer to his question. “Speaking of keeping up appearances,” she began, smoothing out her dress that clearly indicated that she had plans to be somewhere already. “My parents invited us over for dinner. But I told them that you were practicing late and couldn’t come. Aai was disappointed her favorite damaad,” and her only son-in-law, “couldn’t make it. Nik had just pulled into the three car garage, freshly showered after his cricket practice and noticed Ruhika's car there as well which meant his lovely wife was home. He was actually eager to see her since it had been awhile since they'd had the chance to talk. He normally did his own thing and so did she--both of them were after all essentially roommates rather than spouses. But that didn't mean he didn't care about the other woman. "Hi honey, I'm home!" He called out with a teasing laugh as he entered the home and glanced around for her. "What are you thinking for dinner? You want to order in or something? Or we could go out? You know--to keep up appearances?" Truly he was saying all this into the house, not even sure if she could hear him until he turned the corner and spotted her which brought a wider smile to his face. She may be his wife legally but Ruhika was a lot more than that--she was his friend, someone he loved and admired greatly--not to mention someone he was absolutely indebted to thanks to the sacrifice she'd made for him.

Ruhi wasn’t really sure what came over her when she proposed getting married. Maybe it was driven in part by the fact that her parents kept insisting on setting her up with someone or another. And rather than continuously say no to prospects, or lead on a guy when she had no intention of marrying them, it was easier to marry someone who had no expectations out of the marriage. Nothing more than help with securing status in the country. Nikhil was a dear friend and maybe she had been spurned on by the combination of irritation towards her family, empathy towards her friend’s situation, and a crazy bout of rebelliousness. All in all, they found themselves quickly married and then facing the Marathe family who had more issues with the way the marriage happened than the choice itself. The house they were still in the process of fully furnishing came as the first indication that her father had accepted the union, though Ruhi had yet to consider what they would say when Nikhil and her inevitably divorced.

“I couldn’t stay on that ranch for longer. I changed my flight to come back earlier because I was melting in the heat.” With an easy smile, she laughed at the teasing. “If only people knew just how scandalous I am. They’d have a heart attack.” Especially given that no one was more of a rule follower than Ruhi. Hence why the decision was even more shocking to her, but at this point, she knew it was for a good reason. “It wasn’t that bad. . .” she began, though she had watched and based on the commentary of those around her who followed the sport more closely, maybe it hadn’t been the best either. When he asked for her company at his matches, she agreed readily. “Of course, you just need to tell me the time and place and I’ll be there. Not just for our case, Nik. Also because before I became your lawfully wedded wife, I was and am still your friend.” Washing the glass almost immediately, she continued as she began to rummage through the pantry for something to eat. “I don’t know what baba was thinking giving us this place. Nikhil had honestly not expected the house coming as a gift from the Marathe family but he wasn't going to be turning it down. The nice thing about being in a marriage of convenience with someone from a similar culture meant that he understood the unspoken words. Like if he’d refused this gift which was not only a gift but also a form of acceptance from Ruhi's father--things would be going south very quickly for them. No—he knew how to navigate these relationships quite well and would do it for as long as he needed to--perhaps even after. He'd been making himself a drink in the kitchen when he'd heard the beeping of the door signalling a new entrant. He waited for Ruhi to make her way to the kitchen and was smiling when she came around the corner. “Hey there, I didn't know you were coming back tonight.” He grinned before raising a brow at her words, eager to tease her regarding that statement about thinking about him when she held up her finger to tell him to hold on. "Thinking about your husband...how scandalous." He told her with a casual wink.

It was amusing how many little quirks he'd noticed about her in the time they'd been friends and how he was finding out new things whenever they were around the house during the same time. Not to mention--he'd needed to be observant if he had any chance of passing his green card interview. “Hmm—honestly it depends. I was here a bit more before the World Cup started, but then with how badly we played—I'm home for a bit. The MLC is starting up soon though. They have some games in Texas this year and some in South Carolina." He paused before taking a sip of his own drink, “I’d love it if you could come to some of them in South Carolina? Show a little support—it'll probably help our case.” Honestly speaking, Nikhil hated feeling like he was taking advantage of her but this was their situation and now they were definitely both in it until it was seen to completion.

Rolling his eyes with a quirk up of his lips while he read through his friend’s messages, Ved didn’t bother responding as he got into his car to drive over to the new house that Nikhil had moved into. It was strange to imagine that the two of them, despite knowing each other from childhood, only really found themselves in the same place again now. If it was up to Ved, he might have ran into Nikhil when their respective work caused their travel to overlap. Otherwise, he preferred to avoid extended stays in Wilmington. Nonetheless, it was nice to have a friend in town, seeing as the number of connections he maintained were minimal. Knocking at the door, he held up the beer and food as soon as the other opened the door. “I brought double in case bhabhi is also home.” It would be a lie to say he wasn’t curious about that development in his friend’s life as well.  “Otherwise, it’s all yours. If Nikhil was being honest, he’d have told Vedant honestly how glad he was to have his friend in the same city once more because it had been a long time since they’d been able to hang out like this—especially with Vedant’s and Nik’s individual careers that kept them both in different parts of the world at various times. But he pushed all that aside and looked forward to the future, hoping Vedant decided to stay in Wilmington long term as well.
