The words are almost neutral, almost offhanded - if they didn't trail into bitterness. Colette shook her head, as if clearing her mind of any wayward thoughts, and let out a long exhale.

"I - ... guess I was wrong. To expect anything."

Kratos’s response was a measured silence as he regarded the young girl. When he did reply, his voice was calm, not having taken offense to her bitter tone. “He is more like his mother,” he replied. “Anna always saw the best in others. Though, I suspect he might be more like his dwarven father.”

Dirk had taken in and raised Lloyd himself, despite having no obligation to do so, and as far as Kratos could tell he had done a fine job. Better than he could have ever given Lloyd. Of that, Kratos was certain.

“We should all be judged by our own actions. My mistakes are not Lloyd’s.”

Kratos considered the offer for a moment before he nodded. "If you wish."

The two were alike. On one side, their pasts, wrought in anguish and written in blood. On the other, their futures, shrouded and unknowable, but they strived toward them all the same. Searching for something better, a way to atone. A way forward without those they lost.

Kratos couldn’t remember the last time he’d partaken in any of it. And there’s no breeze on Derris-Kharlan. It was enough to make someone forget their own humanity.

Ever since he’d met Anna, even that was coming back, little by little. Like a trickle from a stream. He wasn’t sure what to make of it or even how to process it. 

“If you need to stop and rest, let me know.”

Author’s Note: This one is really late due to some personal reasons, not necessarily due to it being difficult to write, sorry. The last two I’m hoping to write and post by the end of next week (I do need to start my Good Couple Day fic as well)... Anyway, for this one, I wanted to write something cute and fluffy, but also spicy and non-graphic, which I haven’t written anything like that in almost a year, so I hope I did a good job with this one. Sorry for the long wait again...

           When Kratos first met Anna, he couldn’t understand how, after all that she had been through, she could be so positive and determined, so much unlike him. He had become so jaded in thinking he couldn’t right his mistakes, but as the years went on, and their relationship blossomed from mere acquaintances, to friendship, to husband and wife, she made him see, made him believe that he could. She, of course, had her moments where she couldn’t be positive, and where her determination often faltered, but those moments didn’t seem to last very long from what he could recall.

           So that’s why it came as no surprise to him, as he watched her from across their bedroom, to see her cheerful demeanor as she sat up in bed to pet and reassure Noishe.

           “I’m feeling much better today, Noishe. You’re such a good boy, thank you for checking on me.” He heard her say as she began to stroke the fur atop their dog-like protozoan pet’s head.

           The dog-like creature whined in response and leaned into her touch, closing his eyes with his tail thumping against floorboards. He folded his arms as he continued to watch the two silently interact for a few more moments before Noishe decided to leave. Kratos reached out to briefly pet the protozoan as he made his way through the threshold of the door, slightly ducking under the frame so he could make it through. Once the family pet had fully left the room, Kratos closed the door and looked over at his wife as she met his gaze.

           “Oh Kratos! When did you get here?” She flashed him a smile, one that could light up a room and put color on his cheeks.

           His cheeks flushed pink, and he looked away for a few moments, folding his arms tightly against his chest. When he regained his composure, he closed the door, then walked over to the bed and sat down next to her.

           “A short while ago… Lloyd is asleep now, so I’m sure Noishe is going to check on him. …You seem to be feeling better, my dear.” He took her hand in his, eyes meeting hers.

           “It was just a cold this time. Nothing that I can’t handle or haven’t dealt with before.” She flashed him another bright grin.

           He brought her hand up to his lips, kissing the back of it, “I like that in you.”

           “Hm?” She looked at him quizzically.

           “I was watching you with Noishe earlier while reminiscing… Despite everything you have been through, you remain positive and determined through it all. That is just one of the many things you have taught me over the years we’ve been together, and I like that in you, my dear…” He kissed the back of her hand again, letting his lips linger for a while longer this time.

           Anna visibly blushed, her other hand reaching out to gently tug at his turtleneck collar, pulling him closer. Their lips met in an unintended passionate and breathless kiss that only intensified as she ran her fingers through his spiky, auburn locks. When they both pulled back slightly a short while later, her hands drifted down to the hem of his turtleneck, slowly tugging it upward.

           “I think I feel well enough to want you as close as possible to me…” She murmured against his lips.

           He smirked against her lips, half-lidded eyes meeting hers, “As you wish, my dear…”

           Kratos pulled off his turtleneck and tossed it off the bed, exposing his toned and sculpted chest as he captured her lips again. A few moments later, the rest of their clothing ended up on the floor in a pile next to the bed, and their bodies entangled under the covers with his lips peppering kisses up and down her neck. Her fingers tangled in his hair, soft moans and whimpers escaping her lips with every powerful thrust of his hips, the bed creaking loudly under the force of his thrusts. She came with a cry and a gasp, while he came with a groan and a low growl, a few moments later. He slowed down the pace of his thrusts to a steady and languid one, his lips meeting hers in a soft kiss, hands reaching up to cup her face.

           Rolling onto his back once he was spent, taking her with him, she nestled against his chest. Both let out soft, contented sighs as they settled under the covers, with him wrapping his arms around her. His fingers lightly skimmed over her back as he leaned down to plant a kiss atop her head.

           “I meant what I said earlier, Anna…” He spoke as she tilted her head up to look at him.

           “I know you did. I’m just glad, and maybe even a little bit surprised that I’ve taught you something after all these years.” She kissed his chest, her fingers tracing random patterns across his toned muscles.

           When she lifted her head up again to look down at him, he reached up to cup her face, his thumbs lightly brushing across her cheeks. “But I have never told you that that’s just one of the many reasons why I love you…”

           Her eyes widened at his admission, and before she could respond, he pulled her down and kissed her, his fingers tangling in her hair once again. The two paused moments later, just as their kiss started to intensify, when they heard what sounded like scratching coming from the other side of their bedroom door.

           Kratos sighed and looked up at his wife with a knowing smile on his face, “That sounds like Noishe. Lloyd must have woken up and he can’t get him to go back to sleep.”

           “I can go put him back to bed. I really am feeling much better now.” Anna said as she rolled off of him and onto her back.

           He gently grabbed her arm to stop her, “No, my dear, you should rest some more. I’ll take care of it. Then I’ll go make dinner and bring him to you after that, all right?”

           “All right… I can’t wait to see what you’ll be cooking tonight, since you normally don’t.” She turned her body toward him again, flashing him another heartwarming smile.

           He gave her a chaste kiss before getting off the bed, “It certainly won’t be as good as yours, but I hope it will be to your liking… I’ll be back in around an hour with our dinner, then.”

           She pulled the covers up over her chest and watched as her husband found his clothes from the pile on the floor and quickly, but meticulously put them on before leaving the room.

           Later that night, after the two had carbonara for dinner, a dish that she was rather impressed that he could make so well, they retired to bed early after spending some quality time with their three month old son. She fell asleep shortly after their nightly good night kiss, using his chest as a pillow. He laid there with his arms wrapped around her for a time before slowly drifting off to sleep.

           “Good night, my dear…” His last words before finally joining her in peaceful slumber.

"What I have seen... what I have done, I do not wish to repeat so casually. Least of all to you..." Kratos's voice trailed, and then he thought he should explain the thought further. "I have seen, and done, horrible things in the name of Cruxis. I lost myself."

He raised a hand as if he meant to reach for her, to cup her face, or brush the loose strands of hair that framed her face, or perhaps to just hold her hand in his own, yet instead it fell back by his side.

"The last thing I wish to do is burden you with sins that are mine to bear."

And if he was being honest, he didn't want her to look at him any differently. He had already divulged much of the details of Cruxis to her, including that he used to travel with Yuan, Mithos, and Martel, but he had refrained from the more grisly details.

"However, if you're willing, I would ask that you remain with me. It's selfish, I know, but I feel...lighter when you're with me." He had no other way of explaining it.

"My life hasn't held near as many hardships as yours." A son to nobility, a knight in service to the crown, Kratos enjoyed many privileges. Or had before he cast it all aside to stand by Martel and her brother, Mithos. Now he carried the title of heretic rather than knight.

Kratos glanced about the small camp they had set up, noting the barely glowing embers of their fire and her brother's slumped form from where he laid resting. "You and Mithos show far more bravery than myself." His gaze slid back to Martel. "You stand between two worlds and yet still you fight for what is right. The least I can do is lend my sword to your quest."

"Do you?” The disbelief hung heavy on Kratos’s tone. Lloyd and Genis had caught up to the rest of the Chosen’s party and explained everything that occurred since leaving their village, from events at the ranch to the Desian base. 

Desian base indeed.

But every time Kratos looked at Lloyd, he could only see Anna’s grave. Part of him wanted to take Lloyd aside and explain who he was, but if he did then he would have to explain Cruxis and the Journey of Regeneration, and it would all come snowballing out, and could he admit to his son the sins he had committed? 

His voice had a hard time working every time he thought about it, like the Cruxis Crystal had cut that off too.

“Then perhaps you’ll stop treating the Chosen’s Journey of Regeneration like a field trip. Have you practiced today?”

Kratos had all but fallen asleep, though to the untrained eye he may seem to be. In truth, all of his attention was focused on his infant son, who was actually sleeping. Right on Kratos’s chest. At some point Lloyd had fallen asleep and, not wanting to wake the baby, and thus wake Anna, Kratos had resigned himself to his fate to be used as a bed. 

It wasn’t a bad fate by any means. None of this was. If anything, he couldn’t remember being happier in the past four thousand years. Despite all he had seen and done, watching Lloyd’s tiny fist curl against his chest and feeling him shift his little legs, meant more to him than anything else. 

It was also nice to take a break from the pair of lungs their son knew how to use.

Something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye and he looked up to see Anna. At least it wasn’t the baby that woke her. “How are you feeling?” He always tried to give her as much rest as he could.
