Pre-game

Early life

Hugo was the only child of two high half-elves living in the Upper City of Baldur’s Gate. His father was a sorcerer and his mother was an apothecarist. He took an interest in arcane magic as a child and was encouraged by his parents to pursue it. He had a fairly sheltered upbringing, largely homeschooled by his father and private tutors.

Hugo was born and raised female, but from a young age he felt different. He struggled with many aspects of his identity and sense of self. By his early teens, he was suffering not only crippling gender dysphoria, but also intrusive thoughts of violence that seemingly came from nowhere. The dysphoria and the Urges were equally distressing to Hugo, and slowly became intertwined, inseparable -- the desire to remake himself, and the desire to unmake others.

Deeply confused by and ashamed of these feelings, Hugo never confided in anyone, and grew increasingly withdrawn throughout his teen years. Hugo didn't understand where the Urge came from, but he knew he had to conceal it at any cost. What few friendships he’d made as a youngster disintegrated, and he avoided getting close to people in an effort to protect himself from the world, and the world from himself.

Hugo began writing as a coping mechanism. He would bring a notebook wherever he went, write down his most shameful thoughts and feelings and urges, and hide them away. He would draw, too -- producing increasingly grotesque illustrations that came so automatically, it often felt like his hands had a mind of their own -- and he would terrify himself with some of the things he created.

For a time, pen and paper were his lifeline. But despite his best efforts to vent in this way, the Urges eventually proved too much, and Hugo sought more material ways to satisfy them. He started by hurting himself, then moved onto small animals -- mice, birds, anything to quiet the screaming in his head. It was getting harder to control his behaviour, and Hugo noticed he'd started losing himself sometimes -- blacking out and then coming to minutes later with little to no memory of what just happened.

To the rest of the world, Hugo was growing into a promising young wizard -- a bit of a weird kid, perhaps, but undeniably talented. At 18, he applied to Blackstaff Academy but didn't make the cut (to the disappointment of his father). Instead, Hugo pursued an apprenticeship in the literature department of Sorcerous Sundries. He was getting by, just about, but he felt like he was constantly hanging by a thread, and the slightest push could tip him over into the dark.

Cult of Bhaal

The final push came when Hugo was walking home from work one night. Sceleritas Fel approached him on the street and promised him everything he wanted. Sceleritas somehow knew all of Hugo's secrets, and spoke of a "powerful god" who could offer him a new body and a new life. He promised acceptance and belonging -- a place where Hugo wouldn’t have to hide who he was. Afraid and desperate and with little fight left in him at this point, Hugo followed Sceleritas to the Temple of Bhaal, and never returned home.

Hugo had known very little of Bhaal and his followers before this point, but he was re-educated quickly. He was told of his birthright and his "purpose" as the one true Bhaalspawn. He agreed to become the new leader of Bhaal's cult. In return, Bhaal resculpted Hugo’s body into a male form, and offered him a new name, which was to be respected without question within the Temple. Hugo felt truly himself and truly seen for the first time in his life. He believed this was proof of Bhaal’s love for him, and felt indebted to him.

With his new corporeal form, a sense of purpose, and nothing of sufficient value to return to outside, Hugo remained in the Temple, where he was groomed into a Bhaalist poster child, a merciless killer. Violence was rewarded, everything else stamped out; his magical abilities honed to enact the Dread Lord's will. Even in the depths of depravity, he retained his habit of writing -- he became known for writing and drawing in blood, even using it as quill ink. Hugo spent the next two decades as Bhaal’s Temple leader and, eventually, Bhaal’s Chosen.

During game

When Orin infected Hugo with the tadpole, the damage to his brain made him regress to an earlier state of consciousness. He lost not only his memories and much of his powers, but also the ruthless aggression that he’d learned from Bhaal. When he woke up on the nautiloid, he was his fragile younger self again -- alone, afraid, and tormented by shame and self-loathing.

Hugo began Act 1 with no moral compass, and tended to act in self-preservation above anything else. Meeting Gale and bonding over magic with him helped Hugo relearn what it meant to be good and rediscover those principles within himself.

Gale was Hugo’s first love and his first healthy sexual relationship. They were both grounding forces for the other: Gale’s gentleness was a foil for Hugo’s violence, and Hugo’s caution a foil for Gale’s hubris. Despite them both being wizards, their first time was decidedly free of magical enhancements. Hugo just wanted to be close to Gale, to feel loved in the purest and simplest way. They didn’t just bring out the best in one another, they saved each other from their respective catastrophic acts of self-destruction. (I Can Fix Him, He Can Fix Me, Fixing Him Will Fix Me, Fixing Me Will Fix Him, etc.)

Throughout game events, Hugo suffered incessant nightmares, flashbacks and hallucinations of the horrors he'd inflicted in his past. These were especially distressing early on, when he had no context for them. While he did his best to control himself, the bloodthirsty side of him would sometimes emerge. (He’d always get a little crazed in the heat of battle, which Gale found disconcerting and also kinda hot.)

After the revelation about Hugo’s past involvements with Gortash and the Absolute, Gale distanced himself from Hugo for a while, and Hugo fell deep into depression, convinced he had blown his only chance at finding real love. However, the two became close again toward the end of Act 3, when Hugo convinced Gale not to pursue godhood and Gale realised how much they really needed each other to not lose touch with themselves.

Aside from Gale, Hugo got along well with the rest of the party. He became especially close friends with Shadowheart, bonding over their similar experiences of being groomed into a cult, losing their memories and having to relearn how to be good.

As Hugo regained his powers and his memories, he felt more and more able to resist his Urge. After defeating Orin, he rejected Bhaal and went on to destroy the Absolute, saving Baldur’s Gate from the evil he had once created. Only then did the weight of Hugo’s guilt finally begin to lift.

After their victory, Hugo persuaded Gale to leave the Crown of Karsus where it fell, and with it any prospect of ascension. Walking away from their respective pasts, Hugo and Gale decided that their ordinary, mortal love was more powerful and valuable than anything their former gods could offer. <3

Post-game

Shortly after game events, Hugo and Gale got engaged and went back to Waterdeep. In a long letter to his parents, Hugo apologised for leaving all those years ago, came clean about who he was, and invited them to his wedding. They both attended.

With the orb quelled, Gale returned to Blackstaff as a professor, with Hugo initially staying at home and helping Tara clean up Gale’s neglected tower. After a year in Waterdeep and with a shining commendation from Gale, Hugo secured a position on the Blackstaff faculty as a co-director of their magical archives, specialising in blood magic and evocation scrolls and tomes.

Hugo stayed friends with Shadowheart for many years, and she became like a surrogate sister to him. She came to visit him and Gale for dinner every so often, where they'd talk her ears off about their work while she fussed over Tara and only half-listened.

Hugo continued writing, and went on to publish a memoir and several text books on what he’d learnt from his dealings with Bhaal and the Absolute -- all of which took pride of place on Gale’s bookshelf.

Trivia

Hugo’s favourite colour is powder blue, his favourite season is spring, his favourite food is mushroom soup and his favourite animals are pigeons.

Hugo is a good cook and he and Gale regularly cook together.

Hugo is a nerd. He loves to learn and, once he comes out of his shell, he loves to talk about things he has learned (though he'll never compete with Gale's levels of infodumping).

Hugo has a soft spot for animals, perhaps partly out of remorse for hurting them in the past. Once he settled down with Gale he decided to stop eating animals, volunteered at a local stray shelter, and cooked vegetarian meals for Gale until he liked them too. He also conjured his first familiar -- a large black raven called Leopold.

Hugo is a very subby bottom and he has a praise kink

unprepared packing : true to her nature, miki is always unprepared for the practicalities of life, and it shows in her packing. when she returned to stillwater, her suitcase was packed with sundresses, shorts, and light jackets ... completely unsuitable for the town’s unexpectedly chilly climate and impending snow storm.

post it notes everywhere : miki’s organization system could best be described as “organized chaos.” she’s a fan of sticky notes, using them to remind herself of everything from mundane tasks like “call dad” to more personal reminders like “buy bread” or “look up volcanoes in costa rica.” however, to anyone that's not her, the system is a disaster. post its are scattered across her hostel—on the fridge, her phone case, the bathroom mirror, and even in her shoes. she often forgets where she put them, which leads to her asking herself at least three times a day, “where did i put that note?”

trinkets : her travels have resulted in a growing collection of random trinkets that she keeps in her suitcase or mails home to her dad.

selective memory : miki has a curious knack for remembering the most bizarre, seemingly insignificant details. she can recall the name of a stray dog she met in greece five years ago ( ares, in case you’re wondering ), but she’ll completely forget something crucial, like if she left her flat iron on or someone’s birthday. but, it’s not intentional; it’s just how her brain works.

accidental cult marriage : miki has lived what feels like a million lives, each one wilder than the last. one of the strangest chapters? her brief, 23 day marriage to a cult leader in brazil. it all started when she was trying to practice her spanish in a small coastal town, mistakenly thinking the locals were speaking it, only to realize much too late that they were speaking portuguese. long story short: after a very confusing ceremony and a bunch of chants she couldn’t understand, she found herself legally married to a stranger.

tardiness : miki is perpetually running late, not because she doesn’t care but because she underestimates how long everything takes. her friends have learned to tell her events start 30 minutes earlier than they actually do.

the polaroid : though she often appears carefree and spontaneous, she’s deeply sentimental about certain things. she always has two things with her ... the stuffed rabbit her father gave her when she was a child, that now sits on the corner of her bed and a faded polaroid of herself and her friends from their last trip to stillwater together before everything changed, tucked safely in her wallet.

early life

michelle aikawa had always been told she was too much … too loud, too emotional, too full of life. but the truth was, miki simply felt everything deeply, whether it was joy, sorrow, excitement, or fear. she didn’t do anything halfway, and the world felt more vibrant because of it.

born in japan to high school sweethearts, miki was the embodiment of the love her parents once shared.

her early years were filled with warmth, laughter, and the kind of unconditional love that made her feel like the center of their universe. life was simple and sweet, and nothing ever seemed out of reach in the safety of her family’s home.

but that perfect world came crashing down shortly after miki's 12th birthday, when her mother, who had always seemed so devoted, shattered their world by having an affair and walking out on their family.

the betrayal was devastating, and miki was was forced to leave behind everything she’d known in japan to move to chicago with her father.

adjusting to a new life wasn’t easy. the new country, the new language, the new reality—everything was different.

the two of them tried to pick up the pieces of their broken lives. her father worked tirelessly to make sure miki had everything she needed, even as they both silently struggled with the weight of what had been lost.

at 18, miki was accepted into the university of minnesota, where she chose to study communication. it was here that she met jamie novak and harper, two people who would change the course of her life in unexpected ways.

college

miki’s time at UMN started exactly how she’d hoped—bright, busy, and full of possibility. she threw herself into every opportunity, from joining clubs to befriending just about everyone she met. her infectious energy and knack for turning even the dullest situations into a good time made her the type of girl everyone wanted to be around.

during rush week, miki met harper, the kind of girl she always dreamed of being—graceful, effortlessly sweet, and adored by everyone. miki admired her from the start, and by the time they became sorority sisters, she was practically glued to harper’s side.

and then there was jamie novak. he was one of the first people she made at college, and her first real crush as well, however, while jamie never outright rejected her, he had a way of gently steering her back to reality. it was never going to happen.

the trip to stillwater is still a blur in miki's mind. good times shattered one hazy afternoon at the lake. at first, miki didn’t understand what was happening. she squinted out at the water, trying to make sense of the commotion as people ran to the shore. but it never quite hit her … that was jamie, her friend, floating lifelessly, face down in the lake.

the years after that trip passed in a haze. miki went through the motions of college life, but the spark that had once defined her seemed dimmer. she still smiled, still laughed, but the edges of her personality were dulled, like she was always a little out of sync with the world around her.

by her senior year, miki realized her heart wasn't in it anymore. she’d made it through almost four years of college, but when it came time to finish her final class, she couldn’t bring herself to do it. dropping out felt like failure, but miki told herself it was just one class. just one more thing she’d figure out later. and so, she left college behind.

recently

after leaving college, miki drifted back to chicago, hoping the familiarity of home might help her find her footing. she landed a job as a travel agent. at first, the job was exciting, planning dream vacations and helping clients map out their adventures. but the novelty wore off quickly. and she found herself stuck behind a desk, staring at itineraries for trips she’d never take, longing for something more.

one day, after yet another dreary afternoon at the office, she decided she’d had enough. she packed a bag, emptied her savings account, and booked a one way ticket to europe. it wasn’t running away, she told herself ... it was finally running toward something.

that impulsive leap turned out to be the best decision of her life. miki started documenting her travels on a whim, sharing videos and photos of her adventures online. what began as a way to keep her dad updated on her life quickly snowballed into something bigger. her infectious energy and unpolished charm resonated with people, and before she knew it, she’d built a loyal following as a travel vlogger.

her days soon days became a whirlwind of exotic destinations and thrilling experiences. she wandered through bustling markets in marrakech, hiked the cliffs of santorini, and sipped wine in the rolling vineyards of tuscany. for the first time since that summer in stillwater, she felt like herself again—free, unburdened, and alive.

years passed in a blur of new cities and stamped passports. miki hadn’t set foot in the u.s. since she’d left, preferring the freedom of the road to the weight of old memories.

but everything changed when she got the call about harper. the news hit her like a punch to the gut ... her first friend, the girl who had been her sister, was gone.

for the first time in years, miki felt the pull of home. to her former friends, to stillwater. the place where her life had taken its sharpest turn.

she booked a flight back, her heart heavy with the knowledge that she was returning to say goodbye to harper and to a chapter of her life she’d never truly closed.

the unrequited crush – jamie novak : jamie was one of those friends who just seemed to get miki on a level that no one else did. they had this easy, effortless friendship, built on inside jokes, mutual respect, and shared interests. but somewhere along the way, miki started to develop feelings for him. it wasn’t anything major at first, just a little crush that grew over time, something she thought she could handle. but when she finally worked up the courage to subtly confess her feelings, jamie gently but firmly shot her down.

sorority sister – harper chen : miki and harper started as sorority sisters, both rushing the same year and getting paired with the same big. they bonded over their shared experience of surviving the wildness of sorority life and became fast friends. after graduation, they promised to stay close, but as time went on, they drifted apart. harper seemed to become more focused on her career, while miki’s travel bug kept her bouncing around the world, living in a constant state of flux.

the ex-best friend – camille lawson : the two used to be inseparable, sharing everything from secrets to dreams of the future. they were once miki’s closest confidante, her rock during the ups and downs of life … until one fateful falling out. a fight over something trivial at first; miscommunication, hurt feelings, or maybe jealousy, led to a crack in their friendship that neither could mend. they haven't spoken in years.

past roommate – isa morgan : they started living together during their freshman year. however, what started as a mere convenience turned into a relationship that lasted for three years. they stuck it out until their junior year when miki moved into her sorority house, mostly because they had no real desire to rock the boat, even though their personalities couldn't have been more different.

long distance friend – connor acosta : after graduation, miki wanted nothing more than to disappear, however, for some odd reason they kept in touch. they started exchanging postcards and sporadic life updates—little messages about the people they were meeting, and the random observations they had about life. over the years, their correspondence continued, despite the miles and time zones between them. the postcards would sometimes arrive months apart, filled with cryptic notes or funny anecdotes, but they never failed to brighten miki’s day.

ride or die – dakota hartt : miki met them during freshman year in the most quintessentially miki way possible: by accidentally stumbling upon them buying weed. she didn’t see it as a sketchy encounter; no, she thought it was the coolest thing ever. from that day on, she decided they were her person, and they’ve been thick as thieves ever since. whether it’s sneaking into parties, pulling all nighters, or making impulsive decisions, miki knows they’ve always got her back.

platonic soulmate – arlo clark : there was a time when miki and them were inseparable, practically two halves of the same chaotic coin. from wild adventures to quiet nights venting about life, they were always together. things shifted after miki dropped out, life pulling them in different directions, but they’re still the first person she calls when everything falls apart. no matter the distance or time, miki knows they’ll always pick up the phone.

will they, won’t they – bowie bhatt : their friendship was intense, the kind that always felt like it was teetering on the edge of something more. the chemistry was undeniable, and there were moments when it seemed like they might take the leap. but just as things started to shift, miki dropped out and disappeared. now, with miki back in stillwater, it’s like nothing has changed, still waiting to see if they’ll finally cross that line.

friend’s ex – julian koeing : miki always thought they were a little odd, but in a way she found endearing. they were never particularly close—mostly because they dated one of miki’s friends—but she always liked them. even now, there’s a strange sort of fondness there, a quiet understanding that’s hard to explain.

one time thing – jacob williams :it was one of those fleeting, heat of the moment things. they’d been friends, sharing easy banter and a few too many drinks, and one night, it just happened. but it was never meant to be anything more. they never spoke about it again, both quietly agreeing to leave it in the past and keep things as they were.

on again / off again - open : her first real love. the two have broken up and gotten back together more times than they can count, and each break up is more painful than the one before it. whenever they're apart it drives her crazy but whenever they're together she's reminded of how bad they are for each other. potential victims of right person, wrong time.

Favorite character: Serizawa c: hes a 6w5 so legally i must enjoy him but also i just like him ... he has curly hair and is cool OH AND TOME !!!! shes fun :) i dont fully remember my interesting thoughts on her but i enjoy her and how she works for reigen post canon. i think her weird girl charms get to me

How I feel about this character: I like her !!! i feel like shes not talked about much outside of ships which is a shame because i feel like if people came together on her character (this includes people writing canon) then there could be a compelling character here that wouldnt deny her roots or just stay the same sort of trope she used to be. I cant deny i do enjoy that they occassionally dip into her little interest in tarot :) its nice to see that trait remembered.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: i think her with silver or knuckles is always fun :) idk why i think its because they bounce off of each other well. equal levels of no braincells happening here at least with silver. and with knuckles i feel like they could have a fun brother sister dynamic.

My unpopular opinion about this character: what is the popular opinion on her .... idk ill just use this as more of me talking about her character in general. i wish people would use her abandonment issues more, or at least like integrate that into her character since i think its a trait that shows up a bit in the little visual novel and in sonic frontiers and i think that makes sense as a trait for her

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: if she was ever playable again . I HAVENT played the sonic frontiers dlc but i think giving her a little spin off game ala the princess peach games would be fun. maybe then her team from sonic heros can be used again and i could like care about big and cream outside of them being sparingly used in canon .. and big not just being a joke ... also i just want more development for herrr im always begging for development or character in this series i know its for children but plsss also i wish they would like actually like .. fully deal with her whole thing with sonic... it feels like they wanna pretend her obsession just never happened and wasnt like the main thing with her character before they basically turned her into sally acorn.
