HIS WORDS HIT HARDER THAN SHE'D LIKE TO ADMIT . maybe it's cause she can see the sincerity shining in his eyes . she'd like to ignore it . to pretend it's not there, that she doesn't see it . it'd be easier not to keep hating him that way . but cherry can see it right there at the forefront, and it makes her swallow thickly before she's nodding stiffly in reply . " ... thanks ." cherry replies softly, her voice huskier than she would like it to be in the last dregs of emotion . she clears her throat before taking another drag . the smoke filling her lungs is sobering . grounding . she tries to focus on it . the stuff he's saying makes it hard though . makes cherry's chest go tight . and she doesn't know if it's cause he's echoing some of the worst thoughts she's ever had, cause yeah, some of them are in there . or because he's bring new stuff to the table too . stuff she hadn't even considered yet . by the time he's finished cherry's face is twisted in frustration . she sighs, sharp and tight . her head shakes just once . " ... when i get out," cherry starts purposefully, her brow arching with the words as she turns her head in his direction . her jaw clenches in determination, " when i get out i'm ... forgetting all of this shit . i'm leaving it all behind like ... a bad dream . like a nightmare ." cherry swallows . " nightmares don't follow you . i mean," her expression twists . " yeah, you remember them for a while at first . and they scare you . but eventually ... " a swallow before she shrugs . " someone makes you laugh . or you get busy at fuckin' ..." she fumbles for words for a moment, gesturing nonsensically . " work . or you get caught up talking to your boring neighbor, and yeah the nightmare happened, and you were scared, but then other shit happens and maybe you were ... happy or sad or bored and you — you forget about it . for a while . sometimes even forever !" her nostrils flare with another sigh, her brows arching as she meets his eyes firmly and, " and i'm not saying it's gonna be easy . that it's all gonna just fuckin' — poof away, but i'm saying that when i get out of here i'm not going to let this place shackle me down, i'm gonna live ." her jaw clenches tight for a hard moment . " because carrying this place with me for the rest of my fucking life just means it wins ." a scoff of a laugh that's bitter . cherry drags a hand down her face . " i'm not gonna lose my whole damn life to a fucking — location . to a hungry fucking thing with no face and stupid bullshit fucking minions . i'm cherry fucking cannon ." the words are emphatic . cherry's eyes meet adam's with passion . " this bullshit and — i don't care if it drives me crazy ." her head is shaking as she points her cigarette in his direction . " i don't care if it fucking kills me, if i get out of this place i'm leaving it behind . i'm never talking about it . i'm never thinking about it again unless i fucking have to . i'm gonna pretend none of it ever happened and i'm gonna try and — try and live the life it's fucking trying to steal from me . because what right does it fucking have to do that ?" cherry's voice goes sharp for a moment . she rubs her hands over her face before throwing them up in frustration . " doesn't it fucking — piss you off ?" cherry tucks her hair hastily behind her ears with both hands, head shaking a third time . " i feel like i'm the only one fucking mad about it . it makes me feel fucking — insane ."
cherry's breathing a little harder by the end of it all . she takes another drag to calm her nerves only to frown at how close the cigarette is to the filter . " ... you ain't got nothing to go back to ?" cherry asks abruptly with an arch of her brows as she looks at him . she studies him for a moment, jaw shifting before, " not even a ... fish or something ?" cherry has to huff as he continues, reaching for her piece of doodling paper on the motel desk and crumpling it up just enough to throw it at him . " stop makin' fun of me ." the grumble is half hearted at best as cherry rolls her eyes, the expression near softened as she brings the cig back to her lips to take another drag . despite herself her lips twitch at the sound of her laughter . she blames it on the alcohol kicking in . " oh, i'm good at the other shit too, i just get bored ." cherry punctuates the words with a shrug, her eyes twinkling just a bit before she's rolling them . " and i am charming . you can't get to my head by telling me shit i already know ." the quip is light as cherry twists and turns the gun in hands, smoothing a palm over it before she's turning to glance at him at the question . " ... hell yeah, i am ." her nod is confident . she shrugs and takes aim as she adds, " i grew up with a daddy who hunts so i didn't really have much of a choice ."
There's a smug look on his face as she gives him the finger, same kind he'd get in high school when a cheerleader would fight the urge to like him. It felt strangely similar, perhaps with this whole cop thing out of the way they'd have an easier time. Perhaps they could even be friends. Adam was short on those these days. Seemed he was either hated over a lie, or otherwise hated for being shit at making that lie work. There was no winning, and he needed a fucking win.
Her following words held such a compelling amount of determination and hope that he almost felt bad not sharing in on them. For having such a vastly different perspective. And he would have kept it to himself, only for some strange reason he was allowing himself to be more open than he'd been for a long time. "Happy..." he repeated the word, as if it was the first time hearing it, considering it even. Did such a thing even exist? Was he ever actually happy? If he was, he could not recall. "I hope you get all that...I really fucking do." and it's genuine, it's written all over his face just how much he means it.
But then he looks down to his hands, brows furrowing. "I don't think I'm ever getting out." it's a bold, hopeless statement. But he felt it, in his bones he knew, there was no real out. "'Cause say, even if I do -- I'll still bring this place with me. Everything I've seen everything I've..." he couldn't quite express it, the way this place, this ecosystem as she called it, imprinted itself into every molecule of his being. "How long would it take not run home before the sun sets? How long before I stop lookin' over my shoulder? Before I stop to fear every...every fucking tree? How long before I shake this place off my mind? Get some real sleep? How long before I can fit in with...with normal people? Care again about -- about I don't know, sports? Vacations? Normal...people...things?" there's a sigh, knowing all this wondering will never lead anywhere. "And that's...that's a good outcome. That's if, if I get out of here and people actually believe what happened which -- which they won't. I mean, would you? In their place?" --- "So not only would I have to go through all that, but I'd have to do so alone. I'd have to keep quiet about it, never tell a soul 'cause if I do -- well, they'll think I'm crazy, right? I'd have to come up with excuses, have to make up lies, keep track of 'em...til eventually I start questioning my own sanity. Questioning if any of it was ever real at all..." he clears his throat, lighting the joint now, eyes on the ceiling. "And if by some miracle we all got out together, all of us, I wouldn't be alone. Not really. But every day I'd look at a reminder of this place, relive it...be right back here again. And again, and again." finally his eyes will find her again.
"So no, Cherry, I don't think I'm ever getting out. Don't think I'll ever be happy again." And that was that. Truth an' all. As depressing as it may have sounded, he felt somewhat better letting it out. "Your car --- you know, if you do get out 'least you got something to go back to."
Though her words weren't really bringing any light into the room, in contrast they felt good. "Yeah 's nice to feel wanted..." he mimics her again now. "Or whatever." smile is almost soft, and while being wanted had its perks, he learnt the hard way not to confuse desire with affection -- with feelings. Finally he will laugh, it's short but it's deep and it's welcomed. "In their defence you do be talking a lot of shit -- guess that's what that mouth do, huh?" it's cheeky, and very blatantly nothing more than a gentle nudge. "I don't mind it though, for real, it's witty...I'd say charming even but, don't want it getting to your head..."
Finally, he'll eye the gun again. "I know they don't die, it's good target practice though. We can make a game out of it. You a good shot?"

ive been cranky lately because of work and real life bullshit (i don’t know why i thought the housemate moving out would be any less dramatic than living with her for 6mo), so here’s some ideas i’m kicking around about what my shepard does after the war
what my shep does IMMEDIATELY after the war i am leaving up to covering in my fic and i won’t get into details bc there are some spoilers and shit i haven’t posted yet
so many years in the future, maybe in a decade or two: i dont know if i see shep 'retiring' so much as just choosing to decommission as an active officer. maybe her leg gets too irritating to handle or her migraines get worse or she just gets fucking tired or she realizes that one of garrus’s biggest fears is of him receiving a death notification and her dogtags in the mail, or a combination of all four.
but the alliance prob still keeps her as an advisor or senior member for possibly a few things, the preference of which i have not entire hashed out. she is para-centric in terms of morality and ideals, which doesn’t change as she gets older, but -gade in terms of drive and occasional ruthlessness within her job, which always has the potential to harm both herself and others. i think her attitude gets a little more manageable once she works out a new schedule and healthier job for herself. i’m thinking something like a liason for interspecies cooperation, or overseeing general of certain territories, or senior intel strategist, etc etc., something that keeps her away from active combat but still engaged in it, with her fingers in a lot of pies. so i think she'd be doing is “”deskwork”” but work that mostly requires cooperation and strategical planning at a very high level that she could do from the citadel or wherever.
then also, because she doesn't know how to take a fucking break, i see lyd admitting this with much embarrassment and discomfort but with TOTAL support from garrus: she kinda comes up and says “uhhh, also btw you should know i've been discussing with the university of thessia/oxford/sur'keh/etc about master's/phd programs" and g looks up from his briefings from the primarch like "what? you want to go back to school?” and shep is like, still mortified abt this as an adult but determined to act like it’s nbd, but now that she has Free Time she wants to check something off her list, which is: attend a formal school and gain a diploma. and not the damn remedial studies courses she took back in the alliance just so she could be taken off probation. and g is like “huh, well you know i support you, what are you gonna study?" and she's like "probably law, criminal justice, political theory, turian history and maybe interspecies language theory -- ” and she rattles off a bunch of things that nobody can ever possibly do all together, and garrus is kinda trying to wrap his head around the fact that it now sounds like his gf wants to become a lawyer or dump him to go become a xenoanthropologist with liara. and then she says “well look war cleanup is going to last the rest of our lives, we both know i can’t stay out of it. and because nobody takes me fucking seriously when i give advice on this stuff based on what i’ve observed with my own two eyes of this inefficient government system, i need a degree, or like, ten" and g is like “so ur going into politics" and she's like “FUCK no i would never" but she gets to work anyway.
working a full time job and doing classes w private tutors and profs g is like “ok i give up, you’re not going into politics or law? shit you’re not going to c-sec are u?” and she's like “no.......... but i will be making all of this as publicly accessible as possible” and this is basically just part of her movement to start making galactic govts more accountable for their actions and help inform the ppl of what's going on, in both legal and literal terms as they rebuild, and shep is adamant that the same problems that let saren run around loose and unevaluated, the hand-waving that allowed colonists to go missing for years, prejudice that led to one species threatening to not participate in a galactic total war just because a commander didn’t give into their command to allow an ongoing genocide to continue, yeah, that shit can’t keep going on. not just bc she feels like the govt failed them in the war, but bc of all the ways it failed the marginalized species and forgotten civilians, the blind spots, the corruption, etc, which she damn well knows abt bc she was a victim to this exact system as a kid. so she wants it, she wants it so bad, and it’ll never get done in her life time, but that’s ok, if she’s known for anything let it be for this too
meanwhile when garrus is too old to serve as commander of citadel defense he probably becomes like a military or political correspondent for citadel news network while also training young hierarchy engineers in ballistics and programming, and he’s known for being That eccentric instructor who you’re pretty sure pulls at least half of his “war stories” out of his ass, and he gives a different story to explain why half his face looked like it was eaten by varren every time he’s asked (”a maw got in a good hit of acid before i filled it full of cannon fire” “i overloaded a geth prime so hard its head is still embedded in the station ceiling, and then it dropped the rocket launcher it was holding which fired right into my face”) and for all that he loves to brag about cool shit he did, he still won’t answer if he and general shepard secretly eloped years ago because he still calls her his “girlfriend” but always winks when he does????
other ideas: with all the rebuilding, assuming for this post this is on the citadel but could be wherever, architects come to shep like “hey we have this empty space that used to be a department store, after it was ruined by the blast, now it's totally gutted and we want to put like a museum of your life there” or sth equally obnoxious and shep is like “........why. why on earth would u do that. make it a library you assholes” so they name the library after her instead. which she’s like good, that’s practical and will actually help people, here’s my seal of approval, and she doesn’t admit she's super touched they really did that bc when she was a kid she used to hide out in libraries and read all day till closing. and the librarians were nice and she'd feel normal, like she was learning even tho she dropped out of school at age 13. so i think that would be non-negotiable for her, like “i cant prevent you from making a dumbass statue but if you're asking my opinion on how to use five thousand square ft, you're going to make educational and free-access, or you're not putting my name on it"
more later maybe

CHERRY CAN'T HELP BUT ARCH HER BROWS AT ADAM'S ENTRANCE . half at how he nearly seems to scare himself out of his wits and half at the 'compliment' . the latter of the two earns him her middle finger, flashed lazily his way from mostly instinct . " where'd be the fun in that ? at least this way i get to watch you near piss yourself ." cherry replies dryly, tiredly honestly, from where she's half curled up on the window sill . she's cold as all fuck truly and suddenly wishes she went for the cozy warm kinda halloween costume instead of the kind that leaves her chilly . she's genuinely got half a mind to swipe something just for warmth but that would involve leaving this very comfortable spot she's found and risking seeing people she's kinda tryna not to see, and in all honesty cherry isn't ready to commit to that yet, so here she is . and here adam is apparently . him and his bottle and his questions . " what ?" cherry's face scrunches instinctively upon the words . " the fuck makes you think i'm hiding from anybody ?" it's only after the question is out that cherry realizes it might come off more defensive than intended . because, well, cherry might be a lot of things but a coward wasn't usually one of them . she's not a hider . usually . and implying otherwise feels like an afront . even if tonight is kinda, definitely, the exception .
@purgatored colony house party.
Adam snuck into the attic under false pretences and took out of his backpack a fresh bottle of good scotch he'd been saving since his arrival to town. This was, so far, the only opportunity he had to crack that bad boy open, but he wasn't about to share -- well, that's until he noticed someone had already beat him to attic window view. Truly, it startled the shit out of him. He damn near dropped the bottle of precious. "Goddamn. Could have made a sound, you know? Thought you were one of the monster bitches for a sec, they too look particularly nasty tonight." it was a compliment, the kindergarten kind. Ever since their last conversation, she kept sneaking into his mind. "So?" he'll get closer now, taking a sip before sitting himself down in a swinging chair by the window, right across from her -- extending the bottle. "Who you hiding from?"
#c . cannon / interactions .#c . cannon / ft. adam .#i literally don't know how this grew . ignore it .#me vs. late night rambling .

Each team's best defensive play of 2018
Great defensive plays can leave us awe-inspired and wanting more. As we look back on the 2018 season with the help of each MLB.com beat writer, here is each club's top defensive play of the year.
Angels: Simmons makes an unbelievable running catch (May 30) Andrelton Simmons routinely makes highlight-reel-worthy plays at shortstop, but he outdid himself in the Angels' 6-1 loss to the Tigers on May 30, sprinting 85 feet into left field to make an unbelievable diving catch on a popup from Victor Martinez. Full highlight >
Astros: Marisnick robs Taylor with leaping grab (Aug. 5) Jake Marisnick timed his jump perfectly to rob Chris Taylor of a home run in the sixth inning of a loss to the Dodgers. Marisnick had entered the game in center field in the third inning to replace George Springer, who injured his thumb earlier in the game. Full highlight >
Athletics: Laureano makes a throw for the ages (Aug. 12) Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman thrilled daily on defense, but it was Ramon Laureano who made not just the A's top defensive play of the year but the best anywhere. The rookie center fielder's jaw-dropping throw -- following an impressive grab, no less -- capped a sensational double play in Anaheim on Aug. 12 and will be talked about for years; it was clocked at 91.2 mph, traveling 321 feet from the left-center field warning track to first base. Full highlight >
Video: OAK@LAA: Laureano's catch, 321-ft. throw leads to DP
Blue Jays: Pillar takes a homer away from Castellanos (July 1) It should come as no surprise that the Blue Jays' top grab of the year belongs to center fielder Kevin Pillar. Nicknamed "Superman" for his ability to make jaw-dropping grabs in the outfield, Pillar made one of his best catches yet on July 1 when his glove soared above the Rogers Centre wall to take a home run away from Detroit's Nick Castellanos. Full highlight >
Braves: Swanson saves the day (Sept. 8) Having lost four of their past five, the Braves were staring at trouble when the D-backs put two in scoring position with one out in the 10th inning of a Sept. 8 game at Chase Field. A.J. Pollock's two-out single looked like a potential game winner until shortstop Dansby Swanson ranged to his left, dove into the grass behind second base and then quickly rose to his feet to deny a hustling Nick Ahmed's bid to score the tying run from second base. Full highlight >
Brewers: Broxton's Independence Day treat (July 4) Tough call, because Lorenzo Cain and Keon Broxton combined for a trio of home run-robbing catches in one-run Brewers victories, including Cain's in Game 2 of the NLCS. For the sheer majesty of the play, we'll give the nod to Broxton's snow-cone grab against the Twins' Brian Dozier in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win on Independence Day. Full highlight >
Cardinals: Wong ranges to his right and makes incredible throw (Aug. 21) Kolten Wong piled up web gems last season, but his most impressive came against the Dodgers on Aug. 21. He opened the ninth by ranging to the shortstop side of the infield, and, while falling over, made an accurate throw to first base. The Cards went on to win, 5-2. Full highlight >
Cubs: Baez barrels over wall to make spectacular catch (June 5) Javier Baez dazzled defensively at both second base and shortstop for the Cubs in 2018, showing off impressive range and earning plenty of attention for his slick tags. On June 5 against the Phillies, Baez showed no regard for his body as he flipped over a brick sidewall on the run from short to snag a drifting fly ball from Odubel Herrera of the Phillies. Two Cubs fans helped Baez up after he hoisted his glove skyward from the ground in the first row at Wrigley Field. Full highlight >
Video: Must C Catch: Baez tumbles over brick wall for grab
D-backs: Dyson dazzles with homer-robbing grab (June 18) Outfielder Jarrod Dyson robbed three home runs this past year, and it's hard to pick which was more impressive. The three-run homer he stole from Milwaukee's Domingo Santana on June 18 at Miller Park tops the list only because of the ground he had to cover in dead center. Full highlight >
Dodgers: Bellinger preserves NLCS Game 4 tie with swan dive (Oct. 17) Cody Bellinger won Game 4 of the NLCS with a 13th-inning walk-off single, but three innings earlier his spectacular swan-dive of a catch in right field thwarted Lorenzo Cain's bid for extra bases. Bellinger had a 17 percent catch probability on the play, according to Statcast™. Two batters later, Ryan Braun singled. Full highlight >
Video: NLCS Gm4: Bellinger dives for fantastic catch
Giants: Crawford goes from shortstop to bullpen for grab (July 21) Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford provides an enduring highlight by racing into Oakland's bullpen to snare Matt Olson's sixth-inning foul popup. Full highlight >
Indians: Allen makes over-the-shoulder catch at Fenway (Aug. 21) Greg Allen channeled his inner Say Hey Kid against the Red Sox last August, making an over-the-shoulder sliding grab in the deepest part of Fenway Park to rob Mitch Moreland of extra bases and to save a run. Full highlight >
Mariners: Haniger seals victory by robbing Stanton (Sept. 9) Right fielder Mitch Haniger pulled off a spectacular game-ending diving catch in the right-center gap to rob a hit from Giancarlo Stanton and clinch a 3-2 win over the Yankees on Sept. 9 at Safeco Field. After scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth following outstanding slides both at second base and then at the plate, Haniger's full-out dive on Stanton's blooper preserved Edwin Diaz's 54th save. Full highlight >
Marlins: Anderson's cannon arm nabs Freeman at third (May 12) The Braves learned early on not to test Brian Anderson's arm. Miami's Opening Day third baseman, Anderson was challenged in right field by Freddie Freeman. Attempting to go from first to third on Nick Markakis' single, Anderson unloaded a throw to Martin Prado for an easy out. Full highlight >
Mets: McNeil goes full-extension to snare Martinez bloop (Sept. 15) Late in the season, Jeff McNeil consistently showed that he was a better defender at second base than advertised coming up through the Minors. His top highlight occurred Sept. 15 in Boston, when he sprawled onto the outfield grass to rob J.D. Martinez of a would-be bloop single. Full highlight >
Nationals: Soto snatches foul pop from stands (Sept. 11) If there was one critique Juan Soto would give himself from his standout debut season, he would almost certainly point to his defense and the need to improve on an everyday basis. Still, at times he showed he has an impressive next gear in left field, including this leaping catch into the stands in foul territory during the first game of a doubleheader in Philadelphia. Full highlight >
Orioles: Valera goes all-out for full-extension catch (Sept. 13) Manny Machado? Adam Jones? No, the Orioles' play of 2018 came from September callup Breyvic Valera, who raced 86 feet to rob A's outfielder Ramon Laureano with a diving catch down the right-field line. Valera's efforts kept the tying run off base in the ninth inning of an eventual 5-3 Orioles' win. Full highlight >
Padres: Galvis makes spinning throw from his knees (July 12) Freddy Galvis made the extraordinary look routine all season in San Diego. But his best play came during a mid-July contest against the Dodgers at Petco Park. Justin Turner swatted a slow four-hopper up the middle. Galvis ranged to the second-base bag, snagged the ball with his glove and made an unbelievable throw while spinning on one knee. "It defied physics," said right-hander Adam Cimber, who was on the mound at the time. Full highlight >
Video: LAD@SD: Galvis flashes brilliant defense at shortstop
Phillies: Odubel robs homer right out of center-field bush (Apr. 28) Odubel Herrera surprised everybody at Citizens Bank Park on April 28, when he robbed Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman of a home run. Herrera not only leapt over the center-field fence, but he seemed to pull the ball from the bush just beyond the wall. Full highlight >
Pirates: Dickerson robs Schwarber of a homer (May 28) Doubters warned manager Clint Hurdle that he'd need to have a defensive replacement on hand for new left fielder Corey Dickerson. Time after time, Dickerson proved them wrong on his way to winning a Gold Glove Award. Teammates quickly came to appreciate Dickerson's highlight-reel plays, like his robbery of Kyle Schwarber at PNC Park. Full highlight >
Rangers: DeShields slams into wall to rob Piscotty (June 5) Delino DeShields made a number of outstanding catches in center field this past season. One that stands out was the catch he made against the center-field wall to take a run-scoring hit away from Oakland outfielder Stephen Piscotty in the second inning. The Rangers trailed 2-0 at the time but rallied for a 7-4 victory. The Statcast™ graphic in the video shows the tale of the tape on this catch. Full highlight >
Rays: Wendle makes spectacular glove flip to get Bour (July 20) Justin Bour looped a liner over the outstretched glove of Rays pitcher Nathan Eovaldi in the top of the fourth inning on July 20. Sometimes you just get lucky, right? Rays second baseman Joey Wendle rushed in, fielded the ball and did an acrobatic backhand flip out of his glove to Rays first baseman Jake Bauers for the out. Full highlight >
Red Sox: Benintendi ends ALCS Game 4 with amazing catch (Oct. 17) Craig Kimbrel was on the ropes and it looked like the Astros were about to either tie or take the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning when Alex Bregman scorched a liner to left. But Andrew Benintendi came up with a brilliant, five-star catch, and the Sox had a thrilling 8-6 win that put them up, 3-1, in the series. Full highlight >
Video: ALCS Gm4: Statcast™ measures Benny's game-ending catch
Reds: Hamilton twists and turns to rob Carpenter (July 13) To end the bottom of the seventh inning of a 9-1 Reds win over the Cardinals, Billy Hamilton robbed Matt Carpenter of a home run with a leaping catch at the center field wall. The journey to make that catch was far from routine, even for Hamilton. After Carpenter lifted a first-pitch fastball from Amir Garrett, Hamilton turned his back to the infield to track the ball and spun around. Then he needed to backpedal a few more feet and turned again. As the ball came in for a landing, he sprinted again and scaled the fence to reach over and make a spectacular catch. Full highlight >
Rockies: Wolters ends game with heads-up play (May 21) With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium, and the Rockies clinging to a 2-1 lead, Matt Kemp hit a ground ball deep in the hole at shortstop, where Trevor Story made a backhand play and throw to first. The throw was low and got by first baseman Ian Desmond, but Wolters was there to grab it and toss to Desmond for the out -- because Kemp had taken a step inside the foul line toward second base. Full highlight >
Royals: Phillips unleashes throw to nab Garcia at home (Aug. 2) Outfielder Brett Phillips, just a few days after being acquired by the Royals from Milwaukee in the Mike Moustakas trade, showed off his cannon at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago. Phillips made a catch in center field, took a bunny hop, and rifled a throw to home that Statcast™ measured at 104 mph to nail White Sox runner Leury Garcia. Full highlight >
Tigers: Jones brings back Beltre's homer (July 7) JaCoby Jones reached over Comerica Park's left-field fence and into the bullpen to bring back Adrian Beltre's drive, a home-run robbery that helped the Tigers to a 7-2 victory over the Rangers. Full highlight >
Twins: Austin flips over railing but makes catch (Sept. 16) Tyler Austin made a memorable grab against the Royals on Aug. 16, catching a foul popup from Alcides Escobar and tumbling head-first over the dugout railing -- holding onto the ball the whole way. Full highlight >
White Sox: Engel takes three-run homer from Alonso (Aug. 12) Center fielder Adam Engel swiped home runs from the Yankees' Greg Bird on Aug. 6, the Yankees' Kyle Higashioka on Aug. 7 and made yet a third home run saving catch five days later which might be his best. Engel took away a three-run homer from Cleveland's Yonder Alonso, who now is Engels' teammate, in the eighth inning of a 9-7 loss to the Indians. Full highlight >
Video: CLE@CWS: Engel goes over the wall to rob Alonso of HR
Yankees: Hechavarria makes tremendous catch in Wild Card Game (Oct. 3) In the AL Wild Card Game against the Athletics, Adeiny Hechavarria entered as a sixth-inning defensive replacement for third baseman Miguel Andujar. A midseason pickup from the Pirates, Hechavarria is known for his glove, and he lived up to that reputation by making a terrific leaping grab to steal a sure double from Marcus Semien leading off the seventh. "... WELL, THANK FUCK FOR THAT ." cherry allows after a moment of thought, her brows raising for a second before she's giving light half a smile . it's with something close to gentleness that she reaches out to give his bicep a near affectionate punch . it's too light to do any real damage . a love tap more than anything and cherry tries not to think too much about that even as her tone softens with it ." i'd be bored as all fuck without you around . could die from that alone, y'know ?" cherry can't help but grin broadly at the compliment, her eyes twinkling with it as she nods and replies, " same here ." cherry knows they probably both got lucky . people are dropping like flies, and with the height of the body count, well, it's probably a miracle that neither one of them were in it . she swallows thickly and tries not to think about it . there are so few people in this hell that she actually gives a fuck about . losing one would be a blow that wouldn't exactly be recoverable . so instead cherry allows her eyes to light up at light's question, allows herself to move forward and give his arm a playful smack born from a show of shock . " i fucking did ! how the hell did you know that ?" cherry is shaking her head before huffing, " and wouldn't you know it he was weird the whole time ." her brows arch with the tilt of her head . " shocker, i know ."
"Too busy surviving, I suppose." Cherry’s voice pierced the quiet morning earlier than Light had anticipated, but he didn’t mind. Just hearing her, seeing her standing there, was enough to settle the unease that had built up inside him. They both played it casual, like the storm hadn’t shaken them to the core. But for Light, that was his way of masking the fear that had gnawed at him all night. He had to appear unshaken, dauntless—anything to avoid feeling like a burden.
"Mm... can't say I envy you, Cherry, but I will say no other company could ever compare to yours." Through Light's language, I’m glad you’re still alive and kicking, wrapped in the only warmth he could muster. For him, that crooked smile was as close to vulnerability as he got.
"Did you get stuck with the weird cop?"

IT'S HALF REFLEX FOR CHERRY TO GIVE HIM THE FINGER . it's less of a malicious act than a blunt one, her brow arching his way as her eyes glint with something close to teasing . " eat me, bennett ." the response is as quick as anything, loosened a bit with the buzz of alcohol in her system . the fact was, cherry didn't think before she acted at the best of times, but while drunk ? she'd be lucky if she said something she kinda wanted to anyways . and that's truthfully not always the case . but the good thing was, she didn't give much of a fuck about what officer adam had to think of what she had to say . so really, it basically worked out . she hears him walking and shuffling about rather than sees it, her gaze still on the ceiling as she lays on her back on the motel desk . it's grounding to have the hard wood against her spine . even with the screams and the shouting cherry is pretty sure she'd feel better like this than sat up . she snorts at his words before she hums . " ain't all the biblical stuff the whole point ?" cherry asks in half amusement . she moves to reach for the forgotten bottle where it is by her knee . it's a bit too far for her fingers to get to it . she huffs in her frustration, her lips twisting into a frown . she reaches for it on and off as she listens to him, fingers stretching and failing, stretching and failing . it's not until she fully registers his words that she stops, her hand dropping to the wood as she turns and looks at him . her face scrunches . " speak for yourself . i'm getting out ." the words are firm in cherry's determination . she feels something in her stomach twist at the concept he laid out . at the idea of them fucking suffering in here forever, until death . her jaw clenches at it . " that's the only reason i'm staying alive . to give this place a big fuck you ." her eyes are back on the ceiling as she swallows thickly . " i don't want to die here . then this whole fucking shit ecosystem wins, y'know ? i want to get out and burn that fucking tree in the road and then maybe piss on it after that and —" cherry finds herself gesturing with her words, with pent up frustration . " and fuckin' live a damn life that's not just this !" cherry gestures to everything around them with both hands . her chest feels tight . " cause i don't want to suffer, and i don't want nothing, i want to be happy, adam ." her voice cracks before her throat is clicking with another thick swallow . she moves to bring the cigarette back to her lips, only to find her fingers are trembling too much with — something to make it there . cherry can't tell if it's fear or anger or something else entirely making her tremor at this point . maybe it's all three . she drops her hand again before her face twists as she turns to look at him, something almost hesitant in her gaze even as she tries to bite out her words . " you really don't think we're makin' it out ?"
adam's apology catches her off guard enough to smooth over the frayed edges of her temper . she glances at him briefly at it and finds herself still looking as he goes on . there's a beat there where cherry feels her heart clench tight . she has to clench her jaw just as tight to keep from doing something stupid like getting misty eyed . "... i didn't think about it like that ." cherry says as she turns her gaze back to the ceiling . she tries to think of her sweet chevvy, gutted and cleaned out for parts just so they could survive in a place like this . all those memories tainted and taunting her in the car graveyard . she wouldn't have been able to do it, she's pretty sure . would've kicked up a real fuss about it too . " no, you're right ." cherry swallows at the admission before she's finally able to bring her cig back to her lips with steady hands . there's a long drag before she's blowing smoke out from her nostrils . " it's better that she doesn't have to see all this ." it's a half hearted quip at best . cherry licks the seam of her lips and nods . " it's good that i spared her ." the words feel heavier than they should for a moment, and cherry has to remind herself that she's talking about the car . they're talking about a her car . she reminds herself of that until her eyes feel a little drier and her heart feels a bit more steady . by the time she's hearing adam's laughter it's a welcome enough distraction that she tries to focus on the sound of it . " it's fine to like it ." cherry shrugs, the movement easy . " i like it sometimes too . s'nice to feel ... wanted or whatever ." it's chance that cherry's head was half turned towards him as she said the words . she blinks at his miming but doesn't hesitate to toss the lighter over, quick and under handed . despite herself her lips twitch into a grin at his words . she snorts genuinely . " you're a fucking asshole ." it's said in more amusement than she'd like to admit before cherry shakes her head, easy as she says, " nope . they all love my mouth until i start usin' it to talk back . s'bullshit ." cherry is lucky to sit up in time to catch the gun . she's also pretty lucky the safety is on . but cherry's overall a pretty lucky girl . before all of this she would've said she was one of god's favourites . the joke feels only more ironic now . " tried that . they won't fuckin' die ." cherry makes a face even as she holds the gun comfortably, pointing it towards the window of the motel . something screeches outside . she ignores it . " it won't even hurt them . they barely trip ." she makes a face as she huffs, moving to turn the pistol over in her hands in almost longing . " made me get my gun confiscated for nothin' ... " she pouts .
"Yeah yeah..." repeating after her again, only this time there's gentle mockery to his voice, not a cruel kind...more the sort of tone you'd offer a child. And he was starting to feel more at ease in her presence, with their mutual distaste out in the open, there was no pressure for him to prove himself, to watch his words or accommodate her feelings. In spite her not knowing the secrets he buried beneath, he didn't have to pretend to be this upstanding citizen. To give a shit about her well-being, to be whatever the hell people expected him to be at all fucking times. He could, for the most part, just be himself. And for whatever that was worth, it made Cherry better company than he could hope for to stick out the night.
There's a sort of dizziness that alcohol pushed through his body, so he got up and walked over to the couch, crushing down on it against the pillows that prompted his head up just enough to keep an eye on her. And he took out the rolling papers he'd stolen from colony house and began working on a joint. Even if mixing booze and smoke was not exactly a recommended endeavour, he wanted to numb out the screams, the shiver that ran through him with every screech of the things outside. --
Her question does make him question the passing thought, and while he was not being literal about the concept of hell, he did think of it in a literal sense right now. "If hell is real, it's this right here. I mean, forget the Biblical stuff --" he'll pause for a moment, and feel the same way he did back home in his trailer, having late night discussions with his cousins, pondering over life and death. And how stupid his remarks had been back then. How little he understood of reality. If this was all possible, who's to say heaven or hell were not? "I think when we die that's it...we're dead, it's over. But us being here, in this fucking place -- maybe it's as close to hell we'll ever be. And you know what gets me thinkin?" he'll pause, and he feels sort of exposed, just sharing in his thoughts so freely. "We still choose this. We'd rather be alive here, in this version of literal hell...than be gone. It's, I don't know there's something about that -- maybe suffering still beats....nothingness, you know?"
He's focused on rolling as she goes on, only looking up at the mention of a baby before she quickly followed it up by noting it was a car. Adam was fairly certain relief was obvious on his face, as was the emotions he took on with the rest of the story. His face, when not controlled, could always express exactly how he felt. First shock, confusion, then a sort of joy at the idea of such a car, amusement at it's perfectly appropriate name, even a chuckle to back it up. And then sorrow, no, anger -- that she lost it. That they took it. And while he was certain that's not the exact loss she'd insinuated earlier on, it was still a loss that was worth mentioning, and he did not know what to say. "I'm sorry." he'll remark before a shrug passes over his shoulders and he does his best attempt at lighting up the situation. "I mean think of it this way, if you had your ride here they would have taken her for parts. Least out there she's somewhere...waiting for you to get out..." maybe that was pushing it, getting out of here, alive, it didn't seem like something they'd ever get to see. But hope was a bitch, and that bitch fucked him a ton.
Now he laughs, genuinely, and it's been a while since he permitted himself to do that. "Alright, I guess I didn't mind the attention." eyes back on her. "Sometimes." he'll close up the joint and use his thumb to mimic the motion of a lighter, hence asking her to pass it. "I'm sure you were wanted for more than that. I'd go as far as to say some might've wanted you for your car --" it was an attempt at a joke, he needed that. Though it wasn't entirely a lie, a person as real as her had to have been wanted for more. Without much thinking he unbuckles the holster and takes the gun out, tossing it her way. "We could shoot at them, ya' know?"

CHERRY CAN'T HELP BUT GIVE HIM AN EXASPERATED LOOK AT THE COMMENT . it's truly more amusing than she would like to admit, and a flicker of that amusement might glint in her eyes for a bit but cherry tries to cover it up with another drag from her cigarette as she mumbles, " yeah, yeah ..." she smokes for a beat in silence . it's almost enough to compose her again . if she ignores the carnage outside, and the details of her company, and this whole fucking place, than for a moment cherry almost feels relaxed . but then he goes on, and cherry can't help but blink . " you think this place is hell ?" her brow arches with the question . cherry finds herself studying him anew . looking at him from his toes to the tips of his hair and trying to picture him as an alter boy or something . it's a hard image to mesh with the one she already has of him but even that one is unstable as all hell, so what cherry know, really ? after all, she wasn't particularly gung ho on god and yet the thought had passed her mind too . cherry's pretty sure anyone who got even a sniff of the bible would consider as much upon getting here . her expression is almost thoughtful as she considers him before his next question startles her out of contemplation . cherry blinks once but doesn't hesitate , " my baby ." an arch of her brow . " she was an impala ." the cigarette is at her lips . she takes a drag before looking down at it to gauge how much she's got until she gets to the filter . after all, waste not want not and all that . " she was gorgeous . red and sleek and sexy ." cherry licks the seam of her lips then shrugging almost casually . " i named her chevvy, cause, y'know . she was a chevvy ." cherry's eyes roll a bit at the obviousness of the explanation but then her gaze becomes intent again as she points to him with the cig to add, "but also cause i'm cherry, so we were chevvy and cherry ." cherry nods decisively before bringing the cigarette back to her lips with an almost conversational, " it was cute ." the lie slides off her tongue easy because there's more than half a bit of truth in it, really . after all, she did lose her car . it was just what was inside it that gut her open more .
but cherry decides not to focus on that . instead she holds her cigarette between her lips and brings two hands up as if she's gripping something vaguely above her head . " i had these two giant fuzzy dice hangin' off the rearview mirror ." cherry's eyes glint a bit at the description even as she mumbles around the cigarette before pulling it out to add, " and fuzzy leopard seats . she was a dream . drove like one too ." a wistful sigh as cherry looks down at the smoke streaming from her cigarette . she really was quite fond of that damn car . " she was a birthday gift ." what's almost a pout crosses cherry's features . " and now she's gone all cause of some idiots with badges ." cherry falls into a moment of nostalgia then . into memories of driving that car windows down, hollerin' and feeling free with the open road before her . now she can only road she can drive will lead her in circles . it's almost painfully ironic . adam's voice brings her back to the present and cherry comes to it with a roll of her eyes and what's nearly a snort . " yeah ? and i bet you're real torn up about it, huh ?" the words are almost teasing . cherry can't help but shake her head, the slightest of curves to her lips as she scoffs and swings her legs from where they dangle over the motel desk . " i've never met a guy who wanted me for anything but my body ." the words are dry more than anything . cherry's not really all that torn up about it either, truly . it's not like she was going around expecting random guys to appreciate her for her great intellect . so instead of answering as adam continues she merely snorts, eyes twinkling even as she turns her head to look at him, to meet his eyes as she bluntly says, " i don't believe you . but alright ." the liquor is making her accent as thick of molasses . the drawl of it is comfortable on her tongue . she blinks at his offer, arching a brow at it for a moment as she considers before ultimately shrugging and saying, " sure, why not ." cherry rests her cigarette between her lips as she moves to push herself to sit up, reaching a hand out for the gun casually .
"Dunno, I'm a cop -- not a psychologist." truthfully he wasn't either. He was a drug dealer gone rogue and a pretty shit one at that. Only thing Adam was ever good at his entire life was high-school football and he couldn't even keep his grades up enough to stay good at that. Granted, he had family to take care of and two extra jobs to help him do that, so it's not like he had the time to self-actualise, chase dreams, pursue hobbies. Sometimes, late at night, he did imagine himself doing something creative. He pictured himself being good at photography, liking it even. Animals were fascinating too, being a vet was a dream, wasn't it? But none of his thoughts ever went further than that. -- Adam never pictured himself being a cop, it was an opportunity that simply...presented itself. And it's much easier for general population to trust a cop than a criminal in the back of ones car.
But it seemed not everyone shared in that belief. As he listened to her talk, Adam felt a strange sort of kinship. If he could drop his guard down, just for a second -- to let himself admit the truth of who he was, how he got here, what his life was like, she would surely have understood. But people could not be trusted, and beyond selfish desire to be seen and heard and accepted for who he was, there was this deep fear that one day he would do something, or say something wrong, and she would take those secrets and set them free.
"Maybe that's why I'm here then." he reads between the lines, he understands what they took was someone who could not be replaced. And he fucking hated the cops. He hated a government-backed gang. But he would rather be hated for being one of them, than himself. "I mean, if this is some kind of hell for all of us then...wouldn't it make sense someone like me would be a part of yours? And someone like you...a part of mine?" but it wasn't far. Jus as she'd put it, none of it was fair -- because he wasn't who he seemed to be, and without knowing much more than what she'd said, he was certain neither was she. "Who'd they take?" he shuts out the cigarette now, relaxing back into the chair as his eyes remained firmly on her features. He was greedy to know more, to see her beyond the words.
"I don't shoot many shots actually, I know -- shocker, can't help but feel like girls just want me for my body." it's cheeky, the comment, but not entirely untrue. From the moment his growth sprout took a hold of him, Adam knew he was good-lookin. Aunties loved to squeeze his cheeks, tell him how he'd be breaking hearts soon enough. Girls loved to give him attention, to get some back -- but it was all...shallow. He couldn't recall the last time he genuinely met a real fucking person. "I wasn't trying to fuck you, I was messin' around -- you're not the only one who's bored." and then her reason, for not liking him, plan and simple but the irony was not lost on him, so he chuckles at the words. "You wanna hold my gun?"

" HOW'S THAT KINDA THING INSTINCTIVE ?" cherry's expression scrunches with the question, but there's no heat to it . she studies him for another moment before deciding to let it go . she puts the bottle down instead before moving to push herself up onto the motel counter for a seat . it's nicer than she'd like to admit to be off her feet after all the fucking fear and running and all that shit . it makes cherry's muscles untense in a way that almost has her sighing as she brings her cigarette back to her mouth . so it's really her fault that his next question catches her off guard . for a second, just a second, she'd let her guard down . she blinks at him . " ain't it obvious ?" her scoff is almost soft as she looks at him incredulously . there's something different about his face as she studies it . her brows furrow . " those fuckers took everything from me . they're the reason i'm even — here ." a dry swallow . cherry's jaw clenches . " they were chasin' me up the fuckin' street like a dog . i ran, cause what else are you supposed to do ? and now i'm here . and they're not . how's that fucking fair ?" there's a bitter taste in cherry's mouth . she's not sure it's from the smoke ." and maybe i shouldn't've done the shit i did to make 'em do that . i don't care . if they weren't chasing me i wouldn't be here . and they — " a twist of her expression . her nostrils flare as she grabs the neck of the bottle again, movements sharp . " took shit from me ." cherry's free hand is tight around the edge of the motel desk . " they take shit from people . and not stuff you can buy back either ." a shake of her head , a gesture with the bottle in her hand . " time ." blood under her nails that isn't her own . shallow breaths coming from her passenger seat . cherry's hands tighten . " lives ." cherry doesn't want to think about any of this . her movements are jerky as she moves take another long swig from the bottle . she puts it down just in time to hum at his comment . " yeah ? you been shooting your shot a lot tonight ?" the quip comes easy . cherry's brow arches . " got a queue goin' ?" she watches as he pours another shot and arches a brow with a hum of laughter . " you're such a fuckin' guy . you were tryna fuck me ten second ago, and now you don't 'particularly like me' ?" the series of events is so normal that it's almost amusing . almost mundane . if cherry closes her eyes she's in a bar on the outside having this exact same conversation . it's almost comforting . so when he asks his question she doesn't hesitate, leaning back to lay on the motel desk as she answers with a blunt, " you're a cop ." she shrugs .
"It's instinctive." There's a smirk to follow up her eye-roll, and his eyes will stay fixated on every move as she places the bottle against full lips and sips on the burning liquor. No doubt she needed something to excuse finding his company bearable, and he'd be a fool to question it -- so he takes in another long drag from the cigarette and doesn't look her way again.
"Why's that?" there's genuine curiosity to his question, and for anyone even remotely decent at reading people, it's fairly obvious now that he's let his mask down. He was tired, too tired to maintain the charm and the playfulness. And since she'd made it pretty clear she had no intention of fucking, he would be a fool not to attempt the next best thing which was getting to know her. As much as she'd allow anyway. "-- tell me 'bout your shoes."
There's a scoff at the words that did not surprise him one bit. Every girl he'd ever been with started off with exact same claims. How they couldn't stand him, how he irritated the shit out of 'em, how he wasn't their type. If anything, girls who didn't find him appealing were exactly his type. He liked to work for it. He liked the chase. -- But things were different here, and he may not have been perfect but he was trying to be better. And somehow it was not enough. Never enough. "You're the second person tonight to tell me that." he shuts out the cigarette "-- You know, I don't particularly like you either." pouring a shot for himself now, his eyes narrow. "I'll tell you why if you go first. --- Go on, what makes me so...unlikable?"
His eyes are pulled back up from her chest, he'll shrug. "I'm more of an ass man personally but, we've been over that."

" ... STOP COPYIN' ME ." the roll of cherry's eyes is dry but likely not nearly as annoyed as it should be . she moves to take another sip from the bottle so she can perhaps blame the alcohol . she can feel his eyes on her but the attention isn't new . somehow despite cherry's best efforts, the weight of his gaze has become something she's used to . long gone is the tingle at the back of her neck, and instead is a subtle heaviness ; a weighted blanket . she ignores it all the same . it's what she's best at . " kinda pisses me off, yeah ." cherry replies as she puts the bottle back down . her tongue flicks over her lips despite the burn of the liquor down her throat, her brows arching . " ... bet you'd feel the same if you were in my shoes ." in all honesty, it makes cherry want to even the playing field a bit . make him get used to a bit of disappointment . she knows it's spiteful . knows it isn't fair . but isn't it ? if it weren't for the fucking cops she wouldn't be here . if it weren't for them then maybe — " yeah, that's cause you're not my type ." the response is quick, even if it's half a lie . it's also half the truth . so what if something about adam reminded her of near every ex boyfriend she's ever had ? they were ex boyfriends for good reason . " and i don't like you ." cherry's brows arch with the addition as she wraps her lips around the end of her cigarette . her eyes follow the movement of him setting his badge down, her expression twisting in the briefest show of amusement until he continues . she rolls her eyes at the words . and at his rather obvious gaze . " eyes up here, slick ." cherry gestures from her chest to her face as she blows out a stream of smoke . her gaze expectant as she arches a brow . " ... unless your party trick is lookin' at my tits ?"
"Uh huh." he repeats after her, smile dipping itself into his cheeks without realisation as he studied every move. The way her lips purse to blow out the smoke covering the suspicion-ridden gaze. The way light bounces off the curve of her neck, as she studies him right back. This was fun, more fun than he'd cared it to be, and so he doesn't waste another moment questioning. Of all the places to be stuck in right now, all the people to be stuck with -- this was nowhere near too bad.
"That bother you?" he leans in with his question, following it by another drag of his cigarette. "-- me...getting what I want?" it was so rarely the case, yet people always assumed he'd had it easy. Not just here but, even out there -- before he was a respected 'deputy' of a literal hellhole. Maybe part of it had to do with the fact Adam always hated cops, hated everything about them. So when he 'became' one, he took on all the preconceived notions and qualities he'd established over the years. And ran with them.
There's a laugh, and he's far too vain to let her comment slide. "Face, huh? I dunno, it sure don't seem to be workin' all that well with you..." he sets the badge aside, feeling the heaviness of his own lies pull on it. "I can think of a few ways to distract you." he muses now, eyes falling down to her chest, and right back up. "Granted all the best ideas are off the table since you're firm on keeping those pants on but -- sure I can think of something..."

" UH HUH ." CHERRY NODS WITH THE WORDS, UNWILLING TO BUDGE . she knows exactly what he's getting at, and she refuses to entertain it, her eyes glinting with a dare for him to challenge her on it . her gaze flicks over his smirk with that same suspicion, jaw shifting briefly before she moves to take a long drag . she looks away from him rather pointedly as she blows the smoke out . " and i bet you're used to getting what you want, huh ?" cherry's face scrunches a bit with the words . she brings a hand up to gesture to him, quick to say, " with the fuckin' badge and the fuckin' face ." cherry's expression is unimpressed as he continues, her brow arching . " right now all i want is a good distraction until the sun comes up ." she points towards the window with the words . her head tilts . " so you'll do ." cherry's eyes roll at his response . she's shaking her head in exasperation as she moves to take a drag with a, " yeah, well keep dreamin', deputy ... "
"Boredom, huh?" he didn't buy it, that excuse got rusty a long time ago. But then again, he'd always been the type to choose boredom over shitty company and by using that personal point of reference and applying it to their present situation -- it was highly plausible she found his company at least somewhat compelling. And that thought alone is enough to push a smirk into his cheeks.
"It's not an order..." he'll shrug, picking up the poorly filled cup. "-- just like to make it real clear what I want." there's a burn at the back of his throat as he downs the shot and he'll slam it down atop the wooden table in subtle request for a refill. Eyes focused on her, narrowed and unwavering. "And you? What do you want?"
There's a laugh at her retort, and he'll raise his hands in defence before placing a cigarette back between his lips. "Hey that's alright, one can dream..."
