Hey Cthulhu mythos fans
Tumblr media
Check out this bracket
The way this works is that every Cthulhu Mythos character on the bracket is going to fight, and the winner will have to fight Randolph Carter. To have a say in who wins, simply reply to this post with who you think would win in a fight between Wilbur Whateley and Herbert West, or send me an ask with your opinion, and some kind of justification. It doesn’t have to be long, just some reason you think the fight would go the way you do. Remember to consider canonical powers, location, bodily state, personality, etc!

Byatis, the God of Forgetfulness
Few remember him, which is apt. For Byatis is the God of Forgetfulness. Those who are caught in his cyclopean gaze forget all, their mind turning to an all-consuming void that rips every memory out like weeds off a fertile garden. Those who foolishly turn to face the abominable entity and lock their gaze to the abyssal eye are lost forever, guided by the voices that pluck at their souls to turn steps towards the maw of the great old one, becoming the source of his imperishable vitality. It bears great spite towards humanity and once free of his imprisonment it might be the first bringer of desolation to the frail cities of men. For one daring, bold and impossibly shortsighted warlock of yore managed via great enchantments and potent sacrifices to bind the beasts of many names to his bidding, forcing Byatis to enhance his arcane potency, grant vision and eradicate the minds of his opposition. But in its enslavement, Byatis grew stronger, fed the mortal flesh and minds of countless sacrifices, until it regained its full powers, easily braking the tethers of the ancient rites to consume its jailor. Now, trapped under the castle, too bloated with energies to move, it rests in a stupor, digesting the monstrous magic that bound it in the first place. Once done, it might wake once more in the future unknown, to rip the hills that lay upon it now and burst from the very ground like szejtan of old, casting its baleful gaze upon the world ripe for the harvest of souls and minds.

The fifth in a series exploring the popular modern folklore of cryptozoology and what Mythos forces may have inspired it.
Water monsters
If any cryptid is discovered to literally exist, precisely as described by legend and folk-lore, it will probably be a water monster. The ocean is a big place and it's easy to believe we could miss a large animal in the lightless depths.
That said, the physical evidence for sea serpents is just as dubious as it is for any other cryptid, with a lack of clear photos and any biomaterial turning up inconclusive at best and known animals or hoaxes at worst.
Water Horse
Typified by its relatively stocky build and a horse-like head with a mane and/or short horns. Water horses once seemed ubiquitous amongst sea and lake monsters but have been largely replaced outside of a few stubborn hold outs, such as the Loch Oich monster.
Plesiosauroid
Relic plesiosaurs are definitely one of the most iconic cryptids, with their humped back, four diamond shaped flippers and curving swan-like neck. Funnily enough, paleontologists do not think that prehistoric plesiosaurs could lift their necks at an angle like that. Either their modern descendants evolved to more easily stretch out of the water or the plesiosauroids are actually a completely different animal exhibiting parallel evolution.
Or they’re the ghosts of sauropods.
Super Eel
These immense serpents are common sights amongst sea monsters although they range wildly in detail. Super eels have been described as literally just giant eels or similar fish, elongated crocodilian reptiles and something like a basilosaurus.
Many-finned
Described as a long serpentine creature with a segmented armored hide, a dozen fins and in at least one sighting, a walrus-like head. A similar serpent with a distinctly arthropod appearance known as the con rít (centipede) has been sighted in the waters around vietnam.
Not all sightings can be neatly classified however.
A serpent sighted in Cape Sable, Nova Scotia in 1976 was certainly an odd one. It is said that it was built like a 50 foot sea horse, with greyish snake-like skin covered in barnacles. The strangest part was its head, which witnesses described as something like a crocodile's but tusked and having huge bloodshot red eyes that projected out of the skull on stalks!
Kaunuzoth, the glowing thing of Moore Lake
Members of Glaaki's slug-like species can be found in freshwater lakes all over the world, resting from their interdimensional journeys. Kaunuzoth is one such entity, albeit a particularly strange one.
Something really has been seen in the Moore Lake Reservoir. In 1968 a trio of youths (known only as Michael, Richard and Cindy) were having a midnight fish at the side of the lake. Around 2 in the morning one of the fishers noticed a red glow in the water about a quarter mile away before it disappeared. At first they remained unconcerned but suddenly all the night noises ceased and they noticed the glow was back, only 30 feet from the dock. They claimed that the red glow they noticed was a pair of eyes, set in a white crocodilian skull. But what really scared them is that there was something else out there, something huge that loomed in the darkness behind those glowing red eyes. As the crocodile-like head surged towards the dock they raced back to their car and fled the area, leaving their supplies behind. As they looked behind, they noticed the red glow filling the water around their abandoned dock. The local police investigated, although they found nothing but the remains of what seemed to be a feast of raw horned trout.
Other people have seen the red glowing eyes or were plunged into a stifling silence but nobody has reported seeing the huge thing in the darkness since.
Bokrug, the Great Water Lizard
Bokrug is one of the small gods, a native to Earth’s Dreamlands. Bokrug was once a greater and more active god but when his people, the Thunn'ha of Ib, were destroyed he was made lesser for it. He spent 1000 years gathering strength for his final revenge against the perpetrators and nearly spent the last of himself in their destruction.
Now he sleeps at the bottom of his lake, with only the shades of Ib to keep him company. Very little could persuade him to come to the waking world but there are a few things that could awaken his ire enough to make the trip.
The Covington family are old, old money. Descended from british nobility, their family has traditionally lived in a palatial estate in the english countryside and they want for nothing. Lately however, their fortunes appear to have changed. The Covingtons are dropping like flies and the servant staff has fled. Rumours abound of ghostly figures seen wandering their land and a serpent has been seen in the nearby lake, each time coinciding with the death of a Covington. Lord Covington is desperate for this to stop and has spared no expense in bringing all manner of Investigator to the estate.
However, he hides a secret from those who would help; in the secret history of their family they came from a city called Sarnath in the country of Mnar, a place that has never appeared on any map of any age. They fled some ancient disaster with the treasures of that land and used it to buy their nobility. Their ancestors sent forward a warning, to stay far from water, to fear the Great Lizard and to anoint the “shard of Ib” with blood every 10 years. Lord Covington never believed that superstitious twaddle and when his father died a decade ago, he sold the stupid thing on auction.
Chaugnar-Spawn
One of the more out-there theories hanging over the loch ness monster is that it is in fact a swimming elephant, either having escaped from a zoo in the 1930s or perhaps even stranger, a hidden species of pachyderm native to western Europe. Perhaps they’re on to something?
While not at all elephants, the vampiric entities known as the Chaugnar-Spawn do closely resemble them and share some anatomical features. Just like an elephant the Chaugnar-Spawn can use their trunks as a snorkel while swimming!
The advancement of humanity has driven the Chaugnar-Spawn out of their traditional hunting grounds, into deep woods and jungles and more insidiously, beneath the waters of the world. So much of human civilization is located on the shore it is very convenient for a semi-aquatic predator looking to snatch some easy prey.
Byatis
The serpent bearded Byatis, 3rd god of divination. Lore of Byatis is widespread but light on detail, with only the 3rd volume of the Revelations of Glaaki having any real information.
In regards to its supposed relation to Cthulhu and the Star Spawn, human authors were actually more accurate than they usually are in claiming such things. While Byatis is neither a star spawn itself or any kind of “water elemental” it is a member of another species that calls the stellar corona of Xoth home. It came to Earth with them, hitching a ride as the remora does the shark.
Byatis is adept at a form of astral projection that is massively disruptive to local subspace conditions, awakening spirits and drawing residual psychic impressions (also known as a stone-tape haunting) from both past and future. Its projections can even manifest in a smaller, ectoplasmic form in these zones, the spidery toad-like spirit giving rise to the legend of the Berkeley Toad.
Yith-Parrallel Aquaform
Although their technology often resembled it, the Yith did not have much use for magic. In their eyes the whims of greater powers can't compare to the reliability of rune circuitry, psychic metal and atomic power. Things changed when the time came that the Polypous Ones broke free of their ancient prison to war against the Yith. Some radical thinkers (not coincidentally many of them deemed unworthy of braincasting forward in time) turned to the occult lore so far only recorded for historical posterity. With the aid of an unknown entity (or entities) these Yith escaped sideways onto another earth, one where the Elder Things never landed, where the Polypous Ones were never born and the biosphere grew independent of the Shoggothim.
Now they are back in this instance of Earth. Perhaps they have been for millennia, watching and waiting. But for what? Are they merely following in the footsteps of the ancient Yith and observing for anthropological purposes, or is the presence of their aquatic spies a sign of some more nefarious goal?
\\------------------------------------------------------------------//
Wow, that felt like it took a million years to write! Turns out there aren’t that many fun conspiracies around sea serpents for me to bounce off of.
Also, I’ve been addicted to Among Us!

Welcome to Britannia and Beyond!
A regional guide for the Cthulhu Invictus™ setting detailing the province of Britannia, and the barbarian lands of Caledonia and Hibernia
‘Britannia is the border, the furthest outpost of Empire, bounded by cruel Oceania on all sides… what lies beyond that border, what crosses and passes unseen… those things concern me more than any barbarian tribe, more than any army of men… yes, you are right to worry about approaching that border, for what waits in Britannia and beyond… is said to be the doom of Rome.’ – Vatia of Rhodes, 54 AD
Tumblr media
The earliest accounts of Briton the Romans saw were from Greek writers, such as Horace, who wrote ‘the shores of the distant Britons’ lay where ‘the real world came to an end and the world of unknown peoples and mythical creatures began.’ To even approach those shores, Horace writes, the Romans would have to cross ‘the stream of Oceanus, filled with large numbers of sea-monsters.’ And so, the island remained a complete mystery, shrouded in shadow and fog.
But eventually the expanding Roman Empire crossed that ocean, and through hard battles and bitter campaigns enveloped Britannia into its borders. Today (96 CE to 180 CE) the province of Britannia is a place of contradictions, a clash of peoples, cultures, and ideologies. It is a land marked by conquest and brutal oppression, but also by peace, productivity, and great progress. Its citizens enjoy prosperity and health, but to most Romans Britons are still seen as unwashed and uncivilized barbarians, the ‘Britunculli’ or ‘nasty little Britons.’ It is a land, and a people, who are slowly forming a new identity, often at odds with themselves.
But there is another truth, another history: one that predates human existence which is unseen by all except a chosen few. The Shadow War. Humanity’s battle against alien gods, their servitor monsters, and the depraved humans who serve them both or exploited them for personal gain, has raged on for millennia. For centuries, this war in Britannia was mostly contained, the dark forces kept dormant through a combination of rituals, ancient magics, and powerful seals erected over the doors of various mystical prisons.
But the coming of the Romans and their Empire changed all that. With the destruction of the druids and their faith, a darkness long kept at bay is now returning. Spells and rituals are no longer performed, protective groves have been burned, sacred stones toppled, and the prison doors to many dark gods now stand open. These entities seek to spread their dark influence, from the new “colony” cities and wealthy villas to the simplest villages of thatch roof huts and century old farms, from the most powerful elite to the lowliest of slaves. Nowhere and no one is safe from their vile machinations.
This misty, mysterious island is the latest front line of the Shadow War. At the edge of the Empire, a new history waits to be written: one of adventure, but also madness, of glory, but also unspeakable horror. Welcome to Britannia and Beyond.

Three years and five Kickstarters ago we were lucky enough to bring Cthulhu Invictus back to the world of Call of Cthulhu, updating it for 7th Edition. That book proved to be quite difficult and time consuming, but the end result proved worth all the effort. We are deeply proud and grateful that it was honored with the 2019 Silver ENnie for Best Supplement at Gencon.
We caught our breath to play with some cats (Tails of Valor), make a stand for justice (An Inner Darkness), and remember our childhood (The Lovecraft Country Holiday Collection), but through it all, we planned our return to the setting we hold so dear. That time has come at last. The Shadow War never ends, and dark things stir on this rainy island on the edge of the known world. It’s time to set sail for Britannia and Beyond!
Tumblr media
The scholar Zosimos, Lady Dexia of the Vestal Virgins, and the centurion Galarius Rufus along with his loyal hound Brita sail towards Portus Dubris, and the misty, mysterious province of Britannia. For Brita, the war dog, this is a homecoming of sorts.
Tumblr media
For our first setting book for Cthulhu Invictus, Britannia was an obvious choice. With the rich, often tragic, history of the Roman conquest and colonization of Britannia, the fascinating cultural and social results of the blending of so many diverse cultures, and the enchanting folklore of the ancient Celts… one might ask, how could we NOT start with Britannia? From the Roman baths at, well, Bath, to the Antonine (and yes, Hadrian’s) Wall(s) in the north, from Stonehenge, to London (or is that Londinium?), Tír na nÓg and the Sidhe, the savage Picts of Caledonia in the north and bloodthirsty Hibernian raiders from across the western sea, to the dark tapestry of Great Old Ones connected with Britain (especially its Severn Valley). The attraction to delve into these things and create a version of what Britannia is like in the world of Cthulhu Invictus was completely irresistible. So, here we are!
Tumblr media
This well researched and comprehensive guide will provide keepers everything they need to take their Cthulhu Invictus campaign to the province of Britannia, and possibly beyond. The book covers:
1. A detailed history of Britannia, from pre-history to the end of the Antonine Period of the Roman Empire (180 CE).
2. Details on Britannia’s climate, geography, natural resources, and economy.
Tumblr media
Today, the streets of a rebuilt Londinium look much like any other provincial capital in the Empire, maybe a bit cloudier than most.
3. Information on the Roman government, including the military legions stationed there, including both past and current client kingdoms.
4. Tips for creating characters living in Britannia, from Roman settlers, to Romano-Celtic natives (Latinized natives), and native Celts, with a list of Celtic names and gender-naming conventions.
Tumblr media
Our heroes and heroines arrive at the home of Veldicius, an old friend of Galarius Rufus from their days serving with the Legio XX, many years ago.
5. A guide to the province of Britannia by region, describing its distinct cultural outlook, the tribes native to the region (and their attitudes towards Rome), important cities and towns, notable sites, sinister seeds, mythos threats, and more.
Tumblr media
Paying a courtesy visit to (and seeking advice from) Queen Caratacae of the Dobunni, ruler of one of the few remaining client kingdoms of Britannia.
6. Information on the religion, folklore, myths, magic, temples, and sacred sites associated with Britannia, including Druidism and new rules for creating Druid characters.
7. A collection of patrons, investigator organizations, and sinister cults located across Britannia.
8. The Britannia Bestiary, a listing of the native plants and animals, as well as mythos entities drawn from traditional folklore viewed through cosmic horror colored glasses.
Tumblr media
The wilds of Britannia can be a dangerous place, with forests old and dark, where older and darker things lurk.
9. The Dark Gods of Britannia, a discussion of the most iconic Great Old Ones and Outer Gods found across the province, including Eihort, Gla'aki, Y’golonac, Byatis, Yegg-Ha, The Keeper of the Moon Lens, and more.
Tumblr media
Britannia is home to many dark and dangerous gods, and since the coming of the Romans, the powers of those gods are not only growing, but spreading.
10. A discussion of The Dreamlands, Tír na nÓg, and the mysterious Sidhe.
11. A listing of new mythos tomes, magical artifacts, and spells.
Tumblr media
New Roman roads are only a good idea if they avoid places no one should ever go. Getting the engineers and bureaucrats to change their "well laid out plans" is seldom an easy task.
12. Beyond the Wall and Across the Sea: the barbarian lands of Caledonia (Scotland) and Hibernia (Ireland), detailing their people, the conditions there, and the rules for creating characters from these far off lands.
Tumblr media
Walls alone won't protect the Empire from its enemies, human and otherwise. Sometimes, it take courage, steel, arrows, and a fair amount of blood!
13. A pair of scenarios set in Britannia, allowing Keepers and players to dive right into daring and horrifying adventures in this misty land on the edge of the empire.
A Mortal Harvest by Oscar Rios - Shortly before harvest, three villages of the Ordovices suddenly abandon their homes and head towards the city of Viroconium. The investigators must delve into this refugee crisis and get the Ordovices to return to their homes and bring in their crops, lest they face starvation come winter. The Ordovices are too terrified to do so because of a mysterious figure singing haunting ballads under the cover of night. He strums upon a harp, singing a tale of an army of the dead serving a dark god, and warning of their impending doom should they remain.
The Long Dark by Oscar Rios - Just south of the Antonine Wall, in the village of Trimontium, an old friend needs help. An old army buddy, Caito Lupis, retired from the legions and settled down. He's gotten married and begun farming on the land given to him in return for his 25 years of service. At least, that's what he's trying to do. For the Romans, it is time to harvest, but for the natives it's a sacred time, the start of their New Year, a time when ghoulies and ghosties and long legged beasties are free to enter our world. It seems that some of these creatures are set on ruining your friend's harvest and driving him off his land.

Cryptozoology and the Cthulhu Mythos are two of my main interests so of course I think about how the two might intersect. When a cryptid is seen, what Sothic truths might lurk behind it?
Just like with my Mothman page, the top row are some vaguely similar witness accounts while the bottom row is some mythos based speculation. This time we're looking at aliens and cryptids with some seemingly ghostly properties, best exemplified by the Flatwoods Monster.
Also hey West Virginia, what's up with your monsters? Why are they so cool?
The Flatwoods Encounter
The Phantom of Flatwoods. The Braxton County Monster. The Queen of the Cryptids.
One September night in 1952, three boys witness a bright object cross the sky before landing in a nearby farmer's land. Running home to get two of the boy's mother, Kathleen May, they formed a group with more boys and set out to look for the landed UFO. One member of this group was young National Guardsman, Gene Lemon, who brought along a flashlight and his dog. As they headed towards the farm Lemon's dog ran ahead only to bark furiously before running back to the group with it's tail between it's legs. Lemon saw a pair of glittering lights in the dark and turned his flashlight beam towards them. All the witnesses saw a bright red face, a hood shaped like the ace of spades and glowing orange-green eyes. Kathleen May also described it as having long clawed hands and green cloth-like folds. After a few seconds it hissed at them and then glided towards the group, at which point Lemon dropped the flashlight and they had to flee into the darkness. Afterwards several members of the group felt ill and vomited for hours. Lemon in particular had throat problems for weeks.
Investigators from the Civilian Saucer Investigation obtained a few other accounts of the monster in the area after the fact but none of them were as memorable as the Flatwoods encounter. In recent times there has been some disagreement over the appearance of the Phantom, with some ufologists pushing the idea that it was some form of alien robot, powered armor or even a small craft itself.
The Frametown Encounter
The same night of the Flatwoods encounter, George and Edith Snitowsky were traveling the road between Gassaway and Frametown when their car stalled and they caught a horrible stench. George got out to see what was going on and saw a violet orb moving back and forth across the road. As he moved towards it he felt a pins-and-needles sensation and a wave of sickness passed over him. As he staggered back to the car, Edith noticed something behind him. A towering figure with a big head, a bloated body and long spindly arms was hovering rapidly towards them. As they crouched inside their locked car, the being touched the windshield before retreating. The violet globe swayed back and forth as it rose above the trees and it shot off in a trail of light. The next day a gas station attendant pointed out a v-shaped burn on the hood of their car.
Mantis Man
Seen in the company of the alien Greys or hanging out in New Jersey rivers, these towering Mantisoid beings have been witnessed dozens of times. Although superficially similar to gigantic insects, they appear to be only partially exoskeletal with snake-like skin and a bipedal stance. They are able to cloak themselves; with one witness claiming that the creature was transparent, while another said it appeared solid at first but faded from sight after it noticed him. They might be telepathic as well, with several of the Hackettstown New Jersey encounters reporting that they felt sensations of surprise or aggression from the creatures.
Shadow Abductor
After seeing a low flying circular craft, Kelly Cahill and her husband got home with an hour of missing time. Kelly had a triangular burn near her navel and after weeks of stomach problems and a uterine infection Kelly began to remember what happened that night. She recalled leaving the car with her husband in what seemed to be a trance and walking towards the vast UFO as it hovered in a gully. As they walked towards the craft, they noticed tall, dark figures waiting for them. They were congregating in small groups and some were investigating another car parked at the side of the road. As they approached one of the figures floated towards them, covering a hundred yards in a moment. It was so black it was like an absence of matter and the only color came from its glowing red eyes. Kelly remembered feeling a certainty that it was evil before she blacked out. The encounter was even corroborated by the occupants of that other car, who told a similar tale. Further to her encounter Kelly would occasionally awaken in the night to find one of the shadowy aliens looming over her bed before vanishing.
Hopkinsville Goblins
Have we ever considered that the Flatwoods Monster might just be three Goblins in a trench coat?
In 1955 a group of seven people were terrorized by these small glowing creatures as they bumbled around the Sutton family farm. They arrived out of the woods after one of the men witnessed a UFO covered in rainbow lights. All through the night they wandered the property, peering through windows and grabbing at anyone who left the house even as they were shot at by the frightened witnesses. Any time they were struck by a bullet, they would make a sound like rattling metal before falling in slow motion and wandering away. They seemed to able to hover and glide and even when walking they moved in a strange swaying motion as though wading through the air. It was not clear how many of the beings were present, with estimates ranging from 2 to 12.
Fungi from Yuggoth
If it might be aliens, the fungi are probably the ones behind it.
There is a Fungi Tulu-metal mine in the Appalachian Mountains, perhaps a group of prospectors were moving through West Virginia that September night? This particular prospector is a Sleestak, the reptiloid allies of the fungi. The symbiotic fungi it is paired with grants it a number of useful abilities as it follows its crystal matrix probes to deposits of psychic metal.
Diana of the Black Goat
There is a belt of Shub-Niggurath worship stretching from Pennsylvania, down through Virginia and Kentucky and reaching all the way down to northern Texas. One sign of this worship are the numerous legends of goatmen stalking the backwoods or hiding under abandoned bridges. Where there are children of the Black Goat the Diana are sure to follow. The Diana are telepathic and extremely empathetic and understand human fear and that not all beings share the proclivities of the Black Goat and her worshipers. Perhaps the creature seen that night was simply trying to ward off those who would rather not witness the revels of the Gof'nn hupadgh.
Han
Dark Han is considered to be among the ranks of the "Great Old Ones". It is one of the three gods of divination along with Father Yig and serpent-bearded Byatis. It appears as a humanoid figure cloaked in tattered robes and freezing mists. As the cloak flaps its tatters slither away or flap into the air and those within its mists see nightmarish figures. Anyone who touches its skeletal hand will be plagued with nightmares that contain kernels of future events. As long as the nightmares last the victim will sicken as Han draws energy from the dream conduit.
Being from Shonhi
When Yaddith was consumed by Dholes, its people fled to the nearby worlds of Kath, Zaith and Ymar to take refuge. Their allies from Shonhi swarmed the orbitals over the newly formed Dhole hive tracing the transit residues of the Yaddithian light-envelopes to ensure all the survivors where accounted for. One light wake did not head to the muster point in the Xoth system but instead headed off towards some backwater arm of the galaxy. Further investigation revealed that the light-envelope in question belonged to the wizard Zkauba, one of the very people responsible for maintaining the Dhole chants and the barriers that kept them to the worldcore. Interviews with his acquaintances revealed he had been acting stranger than usual leading up to the fall of the barrier.
Now Shonhi sorcerers have followed the trail back to our humble planet, with awkward questions for the wayward Yaddithian wizard.
Xola Noxa
An ancient sorceress from an early human culture, Xola Noxa has been wandering North America since the days it was called Quy and the Muvians built their fabled cities of gold. She is now a towering figure of blistering heat and venom. She walks the secret roads of the world, seeking hidden knowledge and ever greater powers for no reason aside from the love of the hunt.
The blaze of light that crossed the sky remains a question as it resembles none of the spells or signs she is reputed to know. What force did she call down from the stars that night?

Note
Byatis reminds me of this indoor mini golf course called putting edge. The place was only lit up with blacklights, and it was kind of a clusterfuck. I celebrated my twelfth birthday there and had a random existential crisis halfway through the night and went into a dissociative trance. Honestly it was one of the best birthday parties I’ve ever had.
I LOVED PUTTING EDGE!! I remember going there with my friends in high school and it was just us so we just wandered around it and chilled in the blacklights and walked to the ikea across the street because we had a weird sense of what we thought was fun.
