Linked Universe Fanfic: Fright
Stop! Youâve Violated the Law!
So, youâve stumbled upon this original post for my @ LinkedUniverse fanfiction. Thatâs okay, it happens to everyone. As of March 2021, Iâve uploaded the entirety of this fanfic to my Archive of Our Own page. Along with finally giving the story a name (Oops! All Links: A Linked Universe Story) I made substantial edits to some of the chapters. These range from minor stylistic revisions to fixing a gaping plot hole that kinda completely broke the character conflict in the earlier chapters. I also renamed and renumbered (but not reordered) the chapters. Specifically, this is now Chapter 1.
The AO3 iterations of these chapters are the definitive versions. So, if you would like to read this fanfiction, please do so on AO3, right here. With this embedded link. Hehe. Geddit? Link?
Note: My screen name on AO3 is FrancisDuFresne. Yes, that is me. I am not plagiarizing myself.
Anyway, for posterityâs sake, the rest of the original post is below the cut.
I wrote a bit of fanfic for @linkeduniverse . Itâs 3 pages long in Word so Iâll put it under the cut. I hope you enjoy!
Night fell on the young heroes slowly but steadily. Soon enough, it was getting hard for them to see slivers of midnight-blue sky between the tree branches above them. They found a clearing just off the forest path and set up camp. As Wild and Four set about starting a fire, Twilight and Time scouted the area for monsters and got a lay of the land. Satisfied, they came back a few minutes later to a roaring fire and their seven companions enjoying idle conversation.
It can get tiring on a long journey like the Linksâ, so one must make their own fun. âGuys,â Wind said suddenly.
A general murmur of acknowledgment spread through the group.
      âWe should tell stories.â
Wild sighed. âYou know I donât like to do this.â
Wind started to protest but was interrupted by Time.
âLet the kid have his fun,â he said to Wild with a shrug. Looking at Wind, he asked âStories about what?â
âI dunno, something we havenât talked about yet?â
Warrior piped up, âHow about something scary? We donât tell scary stories often.â
Windâs eyes lit up. âSure!â he said.
At the same time, Timeâs and Twilightâs darkened. They knew this might not be as fun as Wind hoped it might be. The Links looked around at each other, waiting for someone else to start. It was my choice to tell stories, Wind thought. May as well start.
âI had some pretty scary things happen to me on my quest⌠not really terrifying, more like stressful. It was on my twelfth birthday that my sister Aryll was kidnapped. A gigantic bird came out of nowhere and snatched her up. The whole time it took to save her, I couldnât bear to think what she was going through. She was only nine.â
A sister? Wild looked up. It had never occurred to him that one of the other Links had a sibling. He tried not to think of his sister if he could help it. Between knowing she died in the Calamity and not properly remembering her anyway, it was unpleasant for him. Wind now had his full attention.
âIt took a while, but I finally saved her. It felt like a huge weight was lifted off my chest⌠then Tetra was kidnapped. Our crew decided to chase after a ghost ship. She jumped aboard and didnât come back. It took a few weeks to find the ghost ship and save her, but she had been turned to stone. She was freed later, butâŚâ
Four perked up when he heard this. His Zelda suffered the same fate.
âWell, anyway, I didnât have too many jump scares. There were some redeads, but other than that it wasnât too scary.â
Wind looked around the group, evidently finished with his story. Wild hesitated but spoke up. âMy Zelda practiced and prayed for almost all her life to master a sealing power that could defeat Ganon. It was terrifying when the Calamity came and we both knew full well that she couldnât hope to use that power. I⌠I couldnât show my fear. I had to be there for her. She needed me to lean on, and I couldnât deny her that.â
The rest of the group couldnât help but stare. They had all had to push fear aside to defeat evil, but they never suppressed their feelings like Wild. Most them hadnât, that is. They waited for Wild to finish, but he seemed to be lost in thought again. In a few meaningful looks, they agreed to leave him be.
Legend picked up the proverbial torch. âI woke up in the dead of night from a vision of Zelda to my uncle holding a sword and shield I didnât even know we owned. He told me to stay in bed, but you know I couldnât do that. I found him mortally wounded in the dungeons of Hyrule Castle⌠then, later, when I thought I was about to save Hyrule, the wizard Agahnim sent me to the Dark World. It was like Hyrule, but it was just⌠wrong. It was an evil reflection of what I knew. Seeing my world perverted like that was almost too much.â
Silence followed for a good few moments. Still, Time and Twilight were stony-faced. Sky looked around and figured it was as good a time as any to say his bit. âMy Zelda went missing. We were riding our loftwings together. I could feel us having a moment. The clouds around us, inches away from each other⌠a tornado cropped up and pulled her underneath the clouds. I spent the next few weeks traveling the air and surface trying to find her.â
âI was this close,â he said as he held up his hand, almost touching the tips of his thumb and index finger. âSo many times, I almost caught up with her. I lived knowing that while I was doing my own adventuring and fighting, so was she. I knew she could handle herself, but it still stressed the daylights out of me. So I guess Iâm in the same boat as you,â he finished, gesturing at Wind.
A minute or two passed before Wind asked, âanyone else?â
Twilight looked over to Time. Time gave a near-imperceptible nod.
âI donât like to talk about this too much,â Twilight began, âbut I suppose I can share it with you all. I donât want to invalidate what you went through or anything, but your fear came from what was around you. Your surroundings, your loved ones in peril, all of that. Iâm not an exception.â
The others looked at him, wondering If he was trying to show them up or leading up to something terrible. Inwardly, they hoped he wasnât being humble for a change.
âMy girâbest friend, my friends were all taken from our village.â
Only Time noticed the change of wording. He understood Twilightâs reluctance to get attached to anyone.
âI was the last kid left,â Twilight continued. âOur world was stuck in perpetual twilight that kept us living in fear and darkness. I was only saved by the Triforce of Courage. I wasnât the same, though. Youâve seen me turn into a wolf before. Iâm mostly comfortable with it now, but I wasnât always. The Triforce somehow knew I had the spirit of a wolf. Being a ranch hand, I know how vicious wolves are. How dangerous they can be. It scared me that that was the essence of who I am.â
Legend felt a modicum of guilt. The Dark World transformed him into a helpless rabbit. That was unsettling in its own right, but now he realized he faced the lesser of two evils.
âAs I adventured, I began to understand that wolves are ruthless against their enemies, but they take care of their own just as fiercely. What I had to give and what I had to do to save my friends made me realize that. Malo, Talo, Beth, Colin⌠Ilia. I didnât know where they were or if they were safe.â
All the Links understood this feeling well. Twilight felt no need to continue that train of thought.
âThose of you who had companions had someone that was easy to trust. The King of Red Lions, Ciela, Navi, Tatl, Ezlo, Fi; you knew you could count on them. Midna was something else. For the longest time, I had no way of knowing if she actually had my back, or if she was just using me. That scared me too.â
The sound of Naviâs name made Time flinch, but everyone was so focused on Twilight that they didnât notice. The longest silence yet followed. Even Wind was speechless. Whether it was out of fear or shock or respect, Twilight couldnât tell. He felt slightly guilty for unloading all of this on them.
Time eventually began to say something, but the words got stuck in his throat. The other eight stared at him. He had faced far worse pressure in his life, but he knew that he owed his friends a glimpse into his past. He had never told them much about it, only enough to bring them to visit Malon.
âTime?â Hyrule asked. It was the first time he had spoken all night.
âHm?â
âYou donât have to if you donât want. Weâd understand.â
âNo, itâs okay,â he murmured. âI⌠Iâll be brief.â
The Links had no idea what to expect. They were on the edge of their seats. Time leaned his elbows on his knees. He stared straight ahead, seemingly transfixed by the fire. The eldest of the heroes took a deep breath, then spoke:
âI was afraid of being alone.â
The others waited for him to continue, but he didnât say anything else. He was silent for the rest of the night. Everyone decided that it would be best if they let him be and turned in for the night.
Wild had trouble sleeping. What did he mean by that? He always had a companion, right? He was never alone. How could he be afraid of being alone?
The Links woke at dawn to see their gear neatly packed. Time was making breakfast over a rekindled fire. He had a tired look in his remaining eye. It occurred to the more perceptive of them that he probably hadnât gotten a wink of sleep that night.

How they met: Ondolemar
Couldn't decide who to ship my DB with so I decided to write different scenarios for each guy, Guys that I liked but you can't marry and some you can.Â
                       Ondolemar
When Ondolemar first encountered Amon-Ra in understone keep, he was about to start his morning rounds when the altmer noticed he was a guard short.âWhere is your sister.â he asked narrowing his eyes at Delsha who noticed her sister wasnât following. âShe right here a second ago.â they went looking for the missing guard and found her talking to a long haired blindfolded elven girl in gray robes, they caught part of their conversation.
ââŚ.But, doesnât it get in the way during combat?â
âI keep it tied back.â
âArenât you worried someone will grab it?â
âTheyâre usually dead before they get the chance.â
They were talking about her hair? Ondolemar gritted his teeth âAelsha!â he barked causing his wayward guard to jump âc-Commanderâ she stuttered the Thalmor gave her a stern look âStop conversing with that welp and return to your post.â the guard nodded and took her side next to her sister who looked embarrassed, whilst their boss dealt with their visitor. âWho are you?â she huffed obviously unimpressed by his behavior Ondolemar glowered at her.
âYou have the honor of addressing a member of the Thalmor. Bask in it.â he gloated the woman looked up curiously âThalmorâŚI need answers about someone if you can provide itâŚâ Ondolemar squinted at her rather rude to be asking favors of someone she just metâŚon less favor for favorâŚhe smirked âIf you want information, Youâll have to do something for me first.â
the girl frowned but, nodded at him to continue. I was sent here to lead the Thalmorâs interests in this corner of Skyrim. Itâs my mission to root out all Talos worship in this city.â He watched her brows furrow "Why are you after Talos worshippers?â she asked a slight note defensiveness was noticeable in her tone, causing the tall male to eye her suspiciously. âWhy so defensive? have something to hide?â he pried ready to take her in, only to have his suspicions thrown in his face.
She pulled an amulet of Akatosh from her robe and let it rest on her chest. âMind your tongue Altmer, You speak to the grey lady; a priestess of  the voice and Akatosh.â she stated in a commanding tone, Ondolemar felt his throat go dry as Aelsha voiced out what he was he was thinking to her sister. âIs he seriously going to ask a priestess of Auriel to commit robbery?!â Delsha shushed her, unfortunately the girl heard and cocked a brow. âRobbery?"âŚNow Iâm curious what do you want?â The thalmor commander took a breath he hadnât realized he was holding.
âOgmund the skald. Heâs old, respected, and I know for a fact that he worships Talos in his home. But the Jarl has been hesitant to call for his arrest. I want you to break into his home and find evidence.â
ââŚ.â
âWill you do it?â
â...two hours.â
Was all she said before walking down the stairs and out of the keep, while Ondolemar had to deal with the twins disapproving and judgmental stares burning into the back of his head, as he thought of the girl's appearance. The young elf was clearly of mix blood. but of which mer blood Ondolemar was stumped, it was possible that she was a Dosmer? the offspring of a Bosmer and a Dunmer a rare pair, but not unheard of... But that didn't explain her snow white skin...unless she was born Falmer's bane? that would explain it, that curse is mostly common in Nordic and half Nordic children. So, at least one of her ancesters had to have been Nord... Ondolemar's train of thought was cut off when he glanced at the dwemer clock on his office wall the two hours had passed, and the altmer assumed the girl failed or ran away. When the sound of someone clearing their throat behind him caught him off guard, his gold eyes met clothed eyes staring back at him. âI believe this is what you were looking for?â the priestess mused holding an amulet of Talos.
âAh, there we have it. This will be all I need to have Ogmund taken care of. I would like to personally thank you on behalf of myself and the Thalmor for your assi-â Ondolemar paused and just stared at the girl incredulously as she removed her blindfold the young elf was not blind like he had previously thought as his gold eyes met with warm crimson orbs...So, his suspicions were correct she had Falmer's bane. âNow about my payment.â She started which snapped the Altmer out of his observation. âOh yeas of course..â He went for his coin purse, only for the girl to stop him. âNot money, my questions.â He nodded and let the girl described her friend an Altmer named Mindaro. who supposedly was looking for his birth family and asked if heâs heard of any families in the dominion who have reported a missing child in the last 20-30 years?
âI canât say I have, I would have to meet him in order figure this out.â The girl sighed and thanked him before leaving. âWait, I never learned your name.â the priestess stopped the looked up at him âI guess thatâs fairâŚItâs Amon-Ra. My name is Amon-Ra.â with that she was gone leaving Ondolemar wondering if sheâll visit again.

Science & Faith Pt.2 - Talos/Keller (Captain Marvel: AU)
Part 1
Authors Note: I could have left it as just the first part. If Iâm honest I would have. But I wanted a definitive ending. There are three distinct pieces. This is only the second.
Disclaimer: I basically nicked the entire Pegasus hangar thing*, switched it to a S.H.I.E.L.D hangar and went - yeah that makes sense for this part. So #Context for where they are and what is happening. Only, obviously weâre following S&F universe here...
*Note: I wrote some of this, again, before watching the movie.
Keller is the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D according to the Wiki... Director!? Gosh darn that gives me a lot of feels... Anyway, that means weâre obviously incorporating this fact...
Premise:Â Discoveries are made. Hearts are broken. This love will never be the same...
Word Count: 2317
Warnings: Oh. Look. I wrote Angst again.
Alternate Universe Used. NOT READER INSERT.
Well you really did it this time. Everyone watched as you took the stars right out of my sky The light out of my eyes Iâm broken embarrassed⌠I know thereâs nowhere I can go All I know is that I need Space
If it takes a rocket, Ok. Somewhere more than a planet away⌠Put a light year between me and you - How does he sleep at night? Momma, the nerve of this guy Am I gonna be alright? I wanna kick myself for falling so hard Momma, can you die from a broken heart?
--- "What is a joyride?" "Aha...!" He laughed, wondering exactly how to explain that, she was paying too much attention to lyrics on the radio in the car these days. And Talos didn't know everything, much as he tried; "It's like... Going very fast in a car. Like you would take a car for a joy ride..." used in its proper terms anyhow⌠Not in the context of THIS song though. He found himself turning the radio down before she figured that one out. She tilted her head, like she wouldn't call this drive a joyride, he drove far too carefully. "Why would you want to do it in the car if you had a ship?" then she smirked "Oh yeah. You don't have a ship." "No. But you do." Her eyes suddenly lit up, like he had made a suggestion... That he didn't actually mean to make "Can we!?" "Can we what?" "Take it out?" "Don't see why not... Itâs in a hangar not too far from here..." As director of S.H.I.E.L.D Jonathan Keller could do whatever he damn well wanted â meaning Talos could do whatever he damn well wanted. She grinned "So⌠I get to take you on a joyride?" He shook his head, looking across to her with a smile; "Maliyah every minute with you is a joyride..." * He couldnât keep the smile off his face as he watched her run towards the blue and yellow star-shaped ship. It was mostly intact, despite the crash â every so often there was a score across the metal, but, clearly the Xandarianâs knew what they were doing whilst constructing it⌠She danced around it for a minute⌠Her skin lighting up in warm, happier tones, as if he didnât know that already. She turned back to him as he made his way slowly over, content to watch her a little longer. Talos adored her. For every life heâd lived â and as a shapeshifter heâd lived many â heâd never encountered another quite like her. âHurry up!â She called him, turning back to her ship ââŚI think my engines could be out⌠But itâs certainly nothing we canât fix.â He also couldnât help the way she made him laugh again; âYou canât fix.â She ran back; rounding him and nudging his back, forcing him to walk faster â âIâve seen your schematics! You know how to fix a ship like this!â This time it was his turn to learn. What he was learning he didnât really know; because Talos spent his time studying her. Not what she was doing. The intensity and passion with which she talked about the ship â and which wires went where to spark this and start up that⌠It was all lost on him. But he nodded where appropriate and gave her smiles of encouragement. And every so often asked a question of her where she wanted him to â even though he wasnât sure exactly what he was saying. It made her happy; and all he ever wanted was to see her happy. His pager had beeped more than once; each time she asked if he needed to check it. Each time heâd silenced it with a âNoâ and focused back on her. This time she stopped working and turned to him; âSomeone really wants to contact you.â âIt can waitâŚâ ââŚJonathan⌠You should get itâŚâ He only checked because of the insistence on her face; and immediately wished he hadnât. She watched his face fall and the way his eyebrows furrowed. It was important. Her heart sank; that meant he had to leave⌠ââŚWhat?â He looked to her, hesitation in those beautiful blue eyes; ââŚIâŚâ âDo you need to leaveâŚ?â ââŚNoâŚâ He checked it again and his voice held the significance of something she could never understand; ââŚItâs here.â She looked confused âIt? What?â He shook his head, because to her it didnât matter. It couldnât matter. ââŚI just⌠give me a few minutesâŚâ ââŚYou donât want me to come?â âNO⌠No Maliyah⌠Continue doing what youâre doing⌠Iâll be back I promiseâŚ!â He gave a smile; âThis wonât take longâŚâ She gave a nod as he began to walk away⌠Then he paused⌠Turning back, Talos gathered her in his arms. If it was urgent, the minute he spent staring into her eyes without a word was wasting precious time⌠Still in silence he placed his forehead gently against hers and closed his eyes, prompting her to do the same. Once again Kellerâs colours reflected back to him from her skin⌠and he took her hands in his. He made a sound, insignificant if she missed it⌠But she didnât⌠Akin to an Earth cat. He pulled away from her, still staring into her eyes, and bit his lips together; she knew right then what he was saying, without him even having to say it; I love you⌠* Maliyah winced at the sudden pain in her chest... What?! She looked down as it began to course over her abdomen. Then her eyes widened; red streams of light pulsed from the middle - lightly at first, but she cried out in pain as they became angrier. Jonathan was in trouble. A lot of trouble. Taking a hit this painful? For a human?! She took a few steps away from her ship half in panic, adrenaline already rushing through her veins at her speciesâ instinct to rescue her lover. He needed her - now.
Multiple shots rang out from the hangar above hers, almost making her jump in the relative silence, her eyes flicked to the ceiling. Guns. So much for him wearing it as a precaution only. God... Keller... please be Ok! She was still cautious as she approached the hangar as quickly as possible. Every fiber in her body was telling her to move quickly... But, even she wasn't sure how much of Earth's weaponry she could take on at once...
She heard shouting and footsteps bouncing down the hangar as people approached, and hung back. Her chest still smarted making her place a hand against it to somehow calm herself down, and his signature was here somewhere. She pressed herself further into the wall and tried to ignore the urgency... Jonathan just hold on... They passed as a large group and all looking like S.H.I.E.L.D agents. They were supposed to be his kind â but he had warned Maliyah they wouldnât understand what she was. She was curious, but no less fearful; why did it not surprise her that humans would turn on one of their own...Â
Now the majority had gone she sprinted across the landing strip to the strength of his signal, calling his name more than once. But as she neared him she went from panicked to horrified... Maliyah stopped. The colours flowing on her skin ceased. Her blood began to run cold and an involuntary shiver ran over her body that made her feel sick. It wasnât even that he was standing there. It was that he wasnât even bleeding...At the sound of footsteps behind him Talos turned away from watching the ship take off, forming fast calculations in his head as to where it could be going. The information he so desperately needed now inboard. Of course, he wished he hadn't.
Maliyah was about 10 good paces from him. The red colouration of her light now dissipating over her chest, signalling to her that he had been hurt, the very reason she was standing here. Only he was, for a human, miraculously intact. And he was dismayed to realise very quickly that that was no good thing. There was no coming back from this. A pain like that would leave Keller as a human broken... At least heavily bleeding. And Talos was doing just fine. And the look in her eyes - which wouldn't leave his - of betrayal. They became watery, the purple-blue lightening by several shades, and he knew that not only was she about to cry. But by her stance, and her choice of weaponry, he was now in trouble. She didn't even give him time to explain himself. He'd just told her he loved her. Now he was standing here, by his presence alone, letting her know plain and simple - Jonathan was a lie. The Yaka arrow danced in the air, hovering just in front of Maliyah above her left shoulder. She wouldn't even need to move to kill him and he knew that. Her eyes were brimming with tears; it was everything he had always feared but it was so much worse. Every so often flashes of orange would flicker through her and pulse across the arrow. Heâd known that whatever she had with Yondu was more than just a disagreementâŚ. That didnât stop him from being insanely jealous every moment he saw it happen.
"Don't you dare take another step!! Don't come ANYWHERE near me!!" She knew how much she had told him; about both a powerful dying race AND Xandar. Whatever he was, Maliyah knew this, if he wasnât human he knew her universe. He could travel through her universe. And do God knows what damage with all the information she had imparted to him. That made her instantly more terrified of him than she should be. And it showed on her face. "Maliyah... Just let me..." Talos took a step forward, making the arrow glow ominously. He hesitated, swallowing. She looked angry. "WHAT ARE YOU!?!" She shook her head "Who Are You!?!" Tears blurred her vision and she was only glad because she couldn't see him clearly. He wasn't real. He had deceived her all this time. Jonathan Keller wasn't human. HELL, for lying to her for so long he was barely a man... "Maliyah please... You don't have to do this... It doesn't have to be this way..." He was reluctant, at the look in her eyes, to tell her what she so badly wanted to know. But the illusion of Jonathan was well and truly shattered. He only hoped that staying in this form would make it so much harder for her to walk away from him. Tears poured from her eyes like rain, and neither of them could stop the downpour; "I trusted you!!!" It was the first time ever he had wanted the ground to swallow him. It was the first time in any form he'd ever felt anything like this. "WHAT ARE YOU!?" she screamed it this time. "... Jonathan... I LOVED you...! Is that - is that even your name!? TELL ME!!" He couldn't take that. Loved, in the past tense. Suddenly he realised just how human he was, the blue eyes he fashioned himself with blurred as if he wasn't wearing glasses... But not for that reason. "Maliyah... Please... Hear me out..." Â She took a couple of steps back as he reached for her, shaking her head - she looked completely broken. She was. And she could see he was starting to break too. "You're breaking my heart." She said it so concrete. So final. "So let me fix this!" Because he wanted nothing more than that. "You can't." Her voice broke, and more tears spilled - her skin lighting up in a multitude of blues... It hurt even more that he now had a feeling he'd never see her display Kellerâs colours again... She took a few steps back, still crying. "Maliyah... Please you can't..." She shook her head "Stop it! Stop it! Stop talking!" She couldn't take it. Everything about her hurt; this was a different kind of heartbreak, because it wasn't even Jonathan breaking it. She didn't even know who was breaking it. It was now or never. He decided. He could walk over, take her in his arms and apologise and try to explain and hope against hope she would listen, and understand and stay... That was a mistake. He took three steps forward and she screamed "NO!" the Yaka arrow responded and shot at him, and for once Talos was glad he wasn't human as his reflexes would have had no way of saving him. The arrow hit the metal plating of the hangar and sparked instead, coming at him twice more before it streaked away in a purple flash of light. Following it with his eyes, he realised she'd also gone.Â
"No... No, no, no...!" He took off running as fast as he could, knowing exactly where she was heading. He'd brought her here to see her ship. Because she was going to show "Keller" how it worked... Talos didn't know a lot about the Nova Corp ships either, and the star shape seemed inconvenient and not in the least bit aerodynamic. No amount of study could ever compare to someone piloting the thing, after all. The hangar was directly below the one he was in and when he found nearly every door barring his way locked, on strength alone he was also grateful he wasn't human. She was quick. Too quick. And he damned himself for not being quicker. "MALIYAH!!! WAIT!!!" In vain, though, as the engines of her ship had flickered into life. It didn't stop him sprinting for it "You can't leave!!! Stop!! Let me explain... I want to explain..!!" The starship left the hangar. And he watched. Heart breaking as it didn't just leave the USA, it left the atmosphere, and then it left orbit. He was breathless and in tears... Placing his hands on his knees, the echoes of his breathing bounced off the now empty structure. That was twice in the space of minutes he'd watched two ships with everything he cared about leave... He wiped his eyes and stared back into the sky; the wake of her ship streaking the sky like the shooting star she was.Â
She'd left and she didn't even know who he was. Hell, now he felt like he didn't either... @my-world-of-imagines @morganadarkladyofall Question; is it more cliche that she doesnât accept who he is? Or would it be more cliche if she did?
