1 in 8 couples struggle with infertility. • Infertility is defined as the inability to become pregnant within a year of trying to conceive. This can be caused by actual medical issues from one and/or both partners or can be completely unexplainable. • 1 in 8, is a large population of the US, yet, when it comes to state laws related to insurance coverage for infertility treatments, only 15 states actually require health insurance to provide coverage. That means that most women are either unable to seek treatment or are paying a crippling amount of money on treatments. • Virginia is one of the states that does not require insurance to cover this, so after a year and a half of trying again, when Kevin and I first started looking into our options, it was disheartening. We thankfully found a specialist up at UVA. They understood the system and knew ways to help at least cover the cost of the appointments, the medicine on the other hand was a different story. We only used clomiphene for about 8 months ($$$$) before we decided to look into next steps. We knew there was no way we could ever afford IVF, so IUI was looking better. The cost was astounding for something that the success rate was between 8%-20%, so we ended up just stopping all together. • This post isn’t here to talk about my story though, but if you ever want to know the full story, how it is such a strong part of God’s story for Kevin and I, I’d be happy to sit and tell you. • This post is here for awareness purposes, but most importantly to say: I’m acknowledging all those amazing women and couples out there struggling in public and private, I see you and I HEAR and FEEL your pain. There are too many of us struggling with this for this not to something all stated REQUIRE health insurance to help with costs.
