“hey mama. what you up to?” you sigh happily as you hear your man’s voice ring through the speaker. “hey pa there’s this man tryna pick me up from the club. i told him that you don’t play about me but he not listening.” an idea pops into ony’s head which causes him to smirk behind you. “what he look like baby?” you turn your head and look the man up and down a couple times. while you stared at him for a couple seconds you instantly felt your face grow warm when the motherfucker decided to wink at you.

Now that Kanye has been canceled, what should we do with his stuff? I mean, can you still wear his shoes and clothes and listen to his music? 

This is a question we’ve grappled with as a culture many times over the past several years when prominent creators were unmasked as horrible people. Can we still listen to R. Kelly’s old music? Can we still laugh at Bill Cosby’s old jokes? Can we still watch Woody Allen’s old movies? I think the Kanye dilemma is even more complicated than those questions for several reasons. His mistakes are not crimes. Also, Kelly, Cosby and Allen were defrocked in the twilight of their careers when it was relatively easy to stop consuming their older work, but Kanye’s in the heart of his career — his shoes and his songs are still ubiquitous. 

I see Kanye’s ugly shoes and slides all the time — I live near a high school, and after school lets out, all the kids stand around talking in packs on the sidewalks, and when I pass by them, it seems like every fourth boy I see is wearing Yeezys. If you go to StockX, you’ll see that Yeezys are one of the biggest sneaker brands in the culture. Many people have publicly or quietly burned their sneakers, but I see many people still wearing them. In light of what we know now about Kanye, should people keep on wearing them?

The first part of answering that question is addressing this question — can we truly separate the artist and the art? Can we continue to enjoy someone’s art after we know that they’ve done or said horrible things? Yeezys are intimately tied to Kanye — their popularity flows out of the popularity of his personal brand. They would not have been nearly as successful if they were made by an anonymous designer rather than someone who’s thought of as a wealthy iconoclastic creative genius. Wearing Yeezys, like wearing Air Jordans, is partly a salute to the man behind the brand. The life success of Jordan, the ultimate winner, is part of what you’re buying into when you buy Jordans. It animates the shoes. You don’t buy Yeezys purely because you like the aesthetic. You buy them also because you think he’s cool. You can’t honestly dissociate the artist from the art when the art is as deeply intertwined with the artist as Kanye is with Yeezys. To wear them is to say you support him.

The shoes are a part of his brand. They say he’s brilliant, he’s an influencer who sets trends and follows no one, he’s someone who sees things differently than everyone else and brings new things to life. Before the MAGA chapter of his life, his brand was a witty rapper and fashion designer who zigged when others zagged. Where most rappers called Hit-Boy or Metro Boomin for beats, Kanye collaborated with James Blake. Where most rappers had album covers that were stylized photos of themselves, Kanye called in the brilliant visual artist Takashi Murakami. Where most want their clothes displayed beautifully, Kanye wanted his Gap stuff to be in trash bags that you had to sift through. 

But over the past few years, in his MAGA era, he’s become a conservative firebrand who’s comfortable saying antisemitic and anti-Black things. He’s supporting Trump and hanging with professional race-baiters like Candace Owens. He’s become the Black Archie Bunker or perhaps a rapping Alex Jones. He’s a victim, he’s a bully, he’s a race traitor. This is his brand now, and he’s worked hard to rebrand himself in this way. I can’t see Yeezys or hear Kanye’s music without thinking about the right-wing lunatic Kanye we have today.    

Let’s be clear: The problem is not that Kanye has a different political opinion than most Black people. The problem is that he won’t stop with the hate speech and hurtful comments that normalize hate speech. At this point, if Kanye were tapped to host a show on Fox News, he would come across even wilder than most of their hosts. 

Some people may say, well, I just like the shoes, I just like his albums, I’m not into the political stuff. I’m sorry that’s not OK. If you wear his shoes now, you’re saying that you don’t care about his antisemitism and his anti-Black racism. They’re not a dealbreaker for you. You can move on from that. You can’t say I exempt myself from politics because politics will still shape your life even if you don’t vote. Music can be listened to privately, which makes it a little different, but wearing his shoes is a public gesture. If you support him in spite of his ugliness, are you saying that his comments are OK? That’s what it looks like to me. You’re saying I’m able to move on, but we cannot just move on. 

The cancellation of Kanye is actually good for society. It’s not acceptable to be antisemitic and anti-Black in public. These are not reasonable positions. We cannot allow this to be part of the public discourse. Black people, if you’re still willing to support someone who’s committed to stepping on our community every chance he gets, you have to ask yourself why am I OK with repping for someone who hates me? Why am I able to ignore Kanye’s racism? No shoes in the world are so dope that they could make me forget that their designer is racist.

OK so I’m a recent convert to the foam shoe trend. I never thought I’d go full in. I wore the Yeezy Foam Runners before, mainly because the first pair was inspired by Armenia. But I happened to get a pair of the Hydro Mocs and am all in. They’re slimmer and sportier than the Crocs and look cooler, at least to me. Boycotting Adidas and Gap in the Name of Kanye West Is Misguided

Kanye West has a new pronouncement: He is done with corporate America.

“It’s time for me to go it alone,” Ye explained in an interview with Bloomberg that was published Monday. “It’s fine. I made the companies money. The companies made me money. We created ideas that will change apparel forever. Like the round jacket, the foam runner, the slides that have changed the shoe industry. Now it’s time for Ye to make the new industry. No more companies standing in between me and the audience.”

He posted screengrabs of text exchanges with various executives on Instagram.

Last week, Sean Combs, who I still prefer to call Puffy, wrote on Instagram: “Since the era of Run-DMC, @Adidas has always used Hip Hop to build its brand and make billions off of our culture. BUT WE ARE MORE THAN JUST CONSUMERS NOW, WE’RE THE OWNERS. @KanyeWest and YEEZY are the reason Adidas is relevant to culture. WE KNOW OUR VALUE!”

The post was accompanied by a screenshot of an apparent text exchange with our distressed fashion king/doll. “I’m done wearing Adidas products until they make this right!! We have to support each other!! Everybody repost this please!!” Puff added.

Separately, Swizz Beatz wrote: “I usually mind my business but this is DEAD WRONG! If we let them do this to @kanyewest it will happen to us also! This man created this groundbreaking innovation and it should be respected as a creative !”

“YE is only asking for his work to be respected and not stolen that’s not crazy to me !! We not buying these !!!!!!!!!!!!” he continued. “@adidas you’re supposed to be original do the correct thing please !!!”

Details of West’s contract are unknown, but Bloomberg reported that Yeezy made $191 million in royalties from the Adidas partnership in 2020.

Kanye made a choice to sign a contract with those enormous brands. It presumably allowed them to do whatever they want—including taking some of his creative direction and applying it elsewhere within the product line. They want to make money and since his affiliation alone arguably saved the brand, they’re going to target the customer as much as possible.

As I recall, after complaining about the major fashion houses ignoring him, he was happy to sign with them.

In an interview with Angie Martinez in 2014, he announced his deal with Adidas and said, “I’m going to be the 2Pac of product.” I still don’t know what that means, but he tried to do it on his own then without as much success. Then he retooled, used other people’s money and infrastructure, and now has an estimated worth of more than $1 billion.

And he seems to know that. Regardless of what he said this week, last week he suggested an interest in partnering with Authentic Brands Group, whose roster of brands includes Forever 21, Barneys New York, JCPenney, and Reebok. Ye also told Bloomberg he’s working with former Adidas executive Eric Liedtke, who now operates the plant-based clothing label Unless Collective, to help establish his empire.

Good for him, but I’m not sure starting a corporation is the best way to cut ties with corporate America.

By now, Kanye has an established pattern where in the event of a perceived transgression, he uses his Instagram page to malign people with insults and accusations—and then deletes everything. If anyone knows this, it’s his estranged wife and her now-ex-boyfriend. If he can go at the mother of his kids like that, close business partners are certainly not safe. I’m less inclined to treat major corporations as individuals, but there is something very Trumpian about his approach. He has a built in audience/cult that will fall for it, but this comes across as the frustrations of a manipulative micromanager who probably slowed down production (see his perpetually delayed and disjointed album releases).

I don’t back Trump supporters with their boycotts—he shouldn’t have signed that contract if he wasn’t cool with the terms. If anything, all of these complaints have made me want to buy Adidas even more, just to spite him. Unless Beyoncé tells me something bad about the company, I’ll pass on the boycott.

I understand Puffy and Swizz want to support their fellow rich friend, but this feels like civil rights-themed hustle with beats. Sorry, not sorry, and thanks but no thanks.

Update: Kanye has since severed his relationship with Gap, announcing on Thursday (9/15) that he’s terminating his partnership with the Gap because of “substantial noncompliance.”

In a statement, his lawyer Nicholas Gravante said West was left with “no choice but to terminate their collaboration” because the retailer allegedly breached their partnership by not opening branded Yeezy stores and distributing his apparel as originally planned.

“Gap’s substantial noncompliance with its contractual obligations has been costly,” Gravante wrote. “Ye will now promptly move forward to make up for lost time by opening Yeezy retail stores.”

Let that be a lesson to all: Rich people will always be fine so long as they complain to their lawyers rather than IG.

summary — this is gonna be a series, but i’m starting with shoes. gyujeong’s been in the fashion venture for a while, and has shown various different styles throughout his career. he’s been pegged as having an eccentric and unique type of fashion that doesn’t blend in the crowd, and one part of that is because he has a collection of shoes that seems like he never wears the same shoes twice unless it’s his tabi’s, slippers or converse. (probably did this on gyujeong’s previous blog but this is all refreshed and made new) warnings — none wc — 631

just like with any outfit, gyujeong considers the accessories, more specifically the shoes to be just as important as the outfit itself. he’s had this fascination with shoes since he was younger when he used to collect jordans / wear air force 1’s as a kid. however, his mom never allowed him to spend so much on shoes, so gyujeong was always limited

it’s probably why he gravitates towards shoes first when he starts making his money himself. they’re not expensive in theory, considering a cardigan at a luxury retail can cost anywhere from $2000-8000 dollars whereas a pair of shoes rarely exceeds $2000. so, to him buying a pair of shoes right then and there doesn’t seem like he’s splurging

as a result, when any new shoes come out — any rare collaborations or one time released colorways, he’s always the first to buy it. he will use the app to try to wait in line, and if he doesn’t he’ll buy it resale value (he’s paid $2000 for his pair of travis scott nike dunks)

but with the rarity shoes, he rarely wears them just because they seem like more decoration pieces for his apartment than actual pieces to wear out — ie) the nike air max 97 sean wotherspoon collab was fun to wear once, but afterwards he just didn’t see to wear them and it was just nice to say he owned a pair than style it out

with things like his dior x jordan collab — he wears that easily out, just because it’s easy to slip onto his feet and a timeless piece. it’s not loud, and thus it just blends in with the rest of his outfits

one thing fans always point out is gyujeong’s love of tabi shoes. margiela when they first released the tabi’s, that’s when gyujeong was sporting the pig feet looking boots — however, as they’ve expanded it and made it a ‘staple’ style, he also bought a pair of sneakers which caused awful blisters but he wore them anyways bc he thinks they’re cute and stylish

so, that’s the gist with his ‘comfy’ shoes — they’re either just jordans he slaps on, regular sneakers like the saint laurent logo sneakers, tabi sneakers or even just chuck 70’s. most times than not, these are the ones he wears for dance practice vids or dance practice

the other comfortable shoe he picks is usually his slides? he’ll alternate, but recently he’s just been into the yeezy slides because they’re so comfortable (from personal experience 10/10 recommend). he has five pairs as his house slippers, and for guests if he ever has them. then, he has two pairs he’ll go to wear out to the convenience store or just hang out at gold star

the last section would be his dressy shoes, which consist of mainly loafers. he loves his chanel x pharell loafers, and most times than not he’ll sport these for ‘airport pics’. plus, they fit with his brand deal, so that’s another plus

he also luvs his martine rose shoes — a lot. they make his feet look like clown feet, but honestly, he loves that look because he purposely buys a size bigger than his shoe size since he likes how his feet look in terms of outfit coordination when his feet stick out

refuses to wear gucci loafers once the general public started eating it up — no way in hell he wears those loafers or mules because they’re too generic for his liking. if u wear those, u are a square to him

all in all, his shoe taste is pretty similar to his clothing taste. it’s unique and the public either thinks gyujeong has the same 4 pairs of shoes or has so many he never wears them twice.
