Buying Plants and Supplies for DIY Projects
If you're looking to save money by tackling basic landscaping projects yourself, you can find all the plants and supplies you need online or at your local garden center. Here are some tips for buying landscape materials yourself:
Shop online for convenience. Many online stores like Amazon or Walmart allow you to order plants, trees, shrubs, seeds, fertilizers, soil, and tools right to your door. Etsy also offers unique handmade garden decor.
Check local garden centers for expertise. Visit independently-owned garden centers to tap into staff expertise. They can help you select the best plants and materials for your needs.
Look for sales and bulk pricing. Big box home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe's offer landscape plants, supplies, and bulk materials like mulch and gravel. Look for sales and bulk pricing on items you need in large quantities.
Buy early for the best selection. Shop for plants early in the season for the healthiest choices that haven't been picked over. Many plants go on sale later in the season too.
5 Simple Landscaping Projects to DIY
If you're feeling up to getting your hands dirty, here are 5 easy, beginner-friendly landscaping projects you can tackle:
1. Add Flower Beds and Garden Planters
Beds of colorful blooms and planters bursting with flowers instantly brighten up outdoor spaces. Choose an area with proper sunlight and soil conditions for the plants you select. Amend soil with compost or fertilizer to help plants thrive.
2. Build a Gravel or Stone Walkway
A stepping-stone walkway adds aesthetic appeal and also prevents muddy paths from forming. For gravel, excavate the area, add landscape fabric to block weeds, and cover with a thick layer of gravel. Use a tamper to compact.
3. Install Landscape Lighting
Outdoor lighting can easily be DIYed. Choose low-voltage systems and be sure to bury cables and install per local codes. Up-light trees, light pathways, and illuminate garden beds to safely navigate and delight visitors.
4. Construct a Planter Box
Basic wooden planter boxes can fit anywhere and add charm. Use rot-resistant cedar lumber secured with waterproof wood glue and galvanized screws. Add drainage holes before filling with potting mix and plants.
5. Upgrade with Hardscaping
For patios, walkways, and other hardscapes, DIY options include paver stones, pea gravel, mulch, bricks, and wood decking. Prepare a level base, excavate if needed, and install per product instructions.
With the right plans and materials, you can tackle many impactful outdoor upgrades yourself. For more complex projects or if you want to sit back and relax, turn to the experts and let professional landscapers bring your dream yard to life. Their expertise delivers stunning, functional spaces you'll enjoy for years to come.

How Much Does a Concrete Shed Cost in Newcastle?
Tumblr media
Jill and Terry need a concrete shed slab to store their tools, lawn mower and bar fridge. They have rung around and a quote from a concreter is $5,970 including GST.
The cost will depend on the type of concrete used and the size of the project. Different types of concrete have different densities, which affect the price.
Cost of materials
Concrete is a versatile building material that is suitable for house slabs, driveways, paving and more. It is durable, affordable and can withstand immense damage. It also provides thermal mass practical for most climates. In addition, concrete can be coloured to suit your design needs.
Before getting a quote for your concrete slab, make sure to consider all the associated costs. These include the cost of labour, delivery charges and GST. You should also factor in any additional work that may be required to prepare the site for concreting, such as breaking up old concrete or removing soil.
The price of concrete varies according to its size and type. Ready-mix concrete is usually cheaper than onsite mix, and you should buy between five and 10% more than what you need to account for waste, spreading and spillage. For light domestic projects, C8/C10/C15 is a good choice. For standard domestic projects, you can use C20, and for medium domestic structures, choose C30.
Cost of labour
Concrete slabs are an affordable and durable option for a home or business. They withstand extreme wear and tear, and can be used in most climates. However, there are many factors that can affect the price of a concrete slab. These include grading, base, forms, thickness, and finishing. You should always get quotes from a few concreters before you decide to hire one.
The cost of labour will also vary depending on the size and thickness of your concrete slab. A thicker slab requires more materials and labor, so you will pay more for it. It’s also a good idea to consult with your contractor about extra costs such as drainage and excavation.
If you’re planning a large project, it’s best to hire a professional concreter with a license in your state or territory. This will ensure that the job is done correctly and safely. You should also ask about their experience and references. Moreover, they should be licensed and insured for your peace of mind.
Cost of equipment
Concrete slabs are the foundation of many home projects. They are the first step in laying a driveway, deck or patio, shed floor, and more. They can also add value to a property. However, the cost of a concrete slab can vary significantly depending on the project and location. Here are some tips to save money on your concrete slab.
For example, a new driveway requires a larger volume of concrete than a patio or shed. It’s important to note that concreters charge per cubic metre, which is the amount of concrete needed to fill a space. To work out the volume of your job, you should use an online calculator.
Adding concrete to the ground often involves digging out existing turf or plants. It can be a costly undertaking, but it’s essential for a smooth surface that will last for years. To minimise costs, consider doing as much prep work as possible yourself. Also, get quotes from local concreters to compare prices.
Cost of site preparation
Concrete slabs are the foundation for many major construction projects, including patios, decks, sheds, and upper floors. The concrete slab is typically made of a combination of water, aggregate material, like gravel or sand, and cement. The mixture is poured and then cured with a chemical process. Some slabs require extra reinforcement, which increases the price. In addition, the site may need to be graded, which isn’t included in all jobs. A concrete contractor will check whether the site is adequately leveled and can support the slab’s weight and slope.
You can save on the cost of your concrete slab by doing as much of the preparation work yourself as possible. This includes clearing the area and moving turf or plants. It is also important to order the right amount of concrete. Buying too much will cause a waste of money and time, while buying too little will not be enough for the project. The size of the job and site access will also affect the cost.

Why Ingredients in Beer Matter – And What Beer Companies Aren’t Telling You
I was having a blast watching the Super Bowl last weekend… and it had NOTHING to do with the game! Bud Light started advertising that they have No Corn Syrup in their beer, and texts like this kept rolling in…
You see, we launched the petition that started the conversation about beer ingredients and why they matter. And now, Bud Light is spending millions of dollars on a marketing campaign to tell us that corn syrup isn’t in their beer – but there is SO MUCH MORE to this story.
Here’s how it all started…
A little over 4 years ago I was sitting at Anheuser-Busch headquarters trying to convince their executives to develop an organic beer. At the time they told me they had tried one in the past, but it didn’t sell. Stone Mill Organic Pale Ale was the first one they produced many years ago, but they took it off the market…
The original organic beer as seen at the Anheuser-Busch headquarters
Well, so much has changed since then, and not only did they end up coming out with an organic Michelob Ultra Pure Gold beer, but they advertised it during the Super Bowl! I couldn’t have been more happy to see that. I remember sitting in their board room, wondering if my arguments for an organic beer were convincing enough or just falling on deaf ears.
Meeting with executives at Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis, MO
I’ve been investigating the ingredients in alcohol for the last 6 years and dedicated an entire chapter (chapter 7!) to it in my first book. The ingredients in beer are not required by law to be listed anywhere on the label and manufacturers have no legal obligation to disclose the ingredients. The beer industry is regulated by the U.S. Treasury Department (the people who collect taxes) instead of the FDA like most other food and beverages. This is why we know more about what’s in a can of Coke than what’s in our beer.
Since beer companies aren’t required to tell us their ingredients, I knew I needed to investigate this for myself and what I found shocked me. I grew concerned after discovering there is a long list of additives the government has approved for use that beer companies don’t need to tell you about… corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, stabilizers linked to intestinal inflammation, artificial colors, caramel coloring, and genetically modified ingredients, to name a few.
I knew people wanted to know more about what was in their beer (especially since my husband loves beer), so I launched a petition in 2014 asking the two biggest beer manufacturers in the world (Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors) to publish their ingredients online (1). The response was HUGE. Within the first 24 hours the petition received 43,000 signatures and Anheuser-Busch publicly agreed to publish the list of ingredients online (2). MillerCoors quickly followed.
The petition we started in 2014
Thanks to the work of the Food Babe Army, we made history that day. And that’s when Anheuser-Busch invited me to St. Louis to see how their beer was made.
Behind the scenes at Anheuser-Busch
If you watched the Super Bowl, you likely saw Bud Light’s ads about how they don’t use corn syrup in their beer. They also threw Miller Light and Coors Light under the bus for using corn syrup in their beer…Which is completely true.
I LOVE how they played the part of “Food Babe Army” in listing out the ingredients for everyone to see in these flyers. But as I wrote about in my first book, Bud Light actually never used corn syrup in their beer, so I found that misleading.
Anheuser-Busch (the parent company for Bud Light) is insinuating that just because one product is “clean”, all of their other products are a better choice, when that couldn’t be further from the truth. They are using the same ingredients as Miller Light and Coors Light in some of their other beers.
Anheuser-Busch is still using corn syrup in other beers, which is likely made with GMO corn.
Bud Light spent millions of dollars on a marketing campaign to tell us that corn syrup isn’t in their beer, but other beers by Anheuser-Busch still use it. And this didn’t go unnoticed by their competition. During the SuperBowl, MillerCoors called them out online for putting high fructose corn syrup in some of their beers…
The battle is brewing between Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors. And while it’s great to see them open up the conversation around beer ingredients and transparency, it would have been better to see Anheuser-Busch remove all corn syrup from their beers before making a such a spectacle.
You’ll find corn syrup in several of their most popular beers like Rolling Rock, Kokanee, and Busch beer…
MillerCoors uses corn syrup in their beers too, but hasn’t always disclosed this…
When MillerCoors first published their ingredients online following our 2014 petition, they did not list “corn syrup” as an ingredient (3). While the media was eating up the story, they simply reported the ingredients in Coors Light and Miller Light as “water, barley malt, corn, yeast, and hops” (4). More recent updates to their website shows the ingredients as this…
Coors Light: Water, Barley Malt, Corn Syrup (Dextrose), Yeast, Hop Extract Miller Light: Water, Barley Malt, Corn Syrup (Dextrose), Yeast, Hops and Hop Extract
Was MillerCoors not telling the whole truth about their ingredients 4 years ago or did they recently add corn syrup and hop extracts?
Should you care if there is corn syrup in your beer?
Corn syrup isn’t typically used as a sweetener in beer, rather it’s used as a cheap sugar which ferments. The reason why you wouldn’t want to drink beer made with corn or corn syrup is because almost all corn is genetically modified (GMO)(5) and if you don’t want to support GMOs, Monsanto/Bayer, and the chemical companies who are poisoning our food and environment with Roundup herbicides linked to cancer (6) – you don’t want beer produced with GMOs. Beer is traditionally brewed with malted barley, a non-GMO grain (7), and not corn.
It’s not just the corn syrup. Beer companies are guilty of using other ingredients that don’t belong in beer. These two are the most common in mass produced beer…
Hop Extract: Rather than using whole hops or hop pellets, beer companies use a chemically altered hop extract to add bitterness while reducing the amount of actual hops in the beer. This is a cheaper way to produce beer.
Caramel Color: This brown coloring is used to make some beers appear darker. It’s manufactured by heating ammonia and sulfites under high pressure, which creates carcinogenic compounds. Newcastle removed this from their beers in 2015 (8) after we called them out for this. It appears Stella Artois (by Anheuser Busch) also no longer contains caramel coloring, as we had reported finding it listed as an ingredient on an overseas website in 2014 (3).
This is another big industry lie that we’ve seen companies do many times. They advertise how one product doesn’t contain something, but their other products still do. So you think that you can trust a brand, but you can’t.
It is CRAZY that Anheuser-Busch would base an entire multi-million dollar campaign on ONE product that doesn’t have corn syrup or hop extract – while their other products still use these ingredients.
Bud Light VP Andy Goeler was quoted as saying “While ingredient labels are not required, consumers deserve to know more about their beer. We brew Bud Light with the finest ingredients and we’re happy to proudly display them on our packaging. When people walk through a store, they are used to seeing ingredient labels on products in every aisle, except for the beer, wine and spirits aisle. As the lead brand in the category, we believe increasing on-pack transparency will benefit the entire beer category and provide our consumers with the information they expect to see.” (9)
I hope they live up to that statement when it comes to ALL of the beers at Anheuser-Busch – and not just Bud Light.
It’s just common sense. Don’t bash other products that use corn syrup and hop extract when you are doing the exact same thing. Either clean up your beers or don’t. I hope Anheuser-Busch learns from this and realizes this is not the way to win customers. We are smarter than that.
In just two short weeks my new book hits shelves and I’m so excited for you to read it. It is very eye opening. In Feeding You Lies, I delve deep into the lies that food and beverage companies tell us to get us to keep buying their products. My hope is that it will change the food industry again, by encouraging them to use more transparent practices and improve their products.
We need all hands on deck, Food Babe Army! Pre-order a copy below to be one of the first to read it and be part of our movement pushing the industry to do better.

Ghent, 6-9 August 2017
Ghent is beautiful. Quiet canals lead me from St Pieters train station into the centre of old town. My hostel for the first night is here, with a view to die for. I befriend a 33 year old Aussie bloke from Canberra and we grab some food and take a little look around. We befriend an Aussie chick from Melbourne back at the hostel. I am exhausted, so I stay behind to rest while they go get some dinner later. Outside on the canal there are lantern boats being lit. A harp and a singer are playing classical music on a row boat. The large oar which a man uses to steer the boat has a rainbow coloured peace flag on it. Some speeches are made then the lanterns are floated into the canal. I go down to watch the spectacle. It is the perfect way to relax after the festival.
The next day I get lost in the city. It is busy with tourists. Busy street malls with fancy clothing and goods shops lead to squares and canals surrounded by grand old churches, old trade buildings and the city castle. Tour boats and tourist driven canoes and kayaks roam the canals. I change hostels in the evening to one on a river boat, a short walk out of the centre. It is an eco-hostel. There is a garden on the roof which filters rainwater to be used for the showers and hand washing sink. Vegan snacks and beers fill the honesty fridge. This is a more relaxed vibe, and I sit in the sun and catch up with some people on my phone.
My friend Jess from Newcastle will be in Europe for three weeks. I talk with her about her trip and anxieties and agree to meet her in Stockholm towards the end of August. I go to meet my Aussie mate and a Spanish guy from the previous hostel for some beers.
And I am glad to return to the hostel. I buy a huge serve of frittes for dinner from a nearby fry shop. The man who runs it is large and jolly, I would trust him to be my cook. They fry the chips in animal fat in Belgium, at a higher temperature and for twice as long as other fast food nations. This makes the chips ten times as tasty, but also ten times as carcinogenic. The EU has banned this method of cooking because of the health effects, but Belgium protested that it was their national dish so an exception was made for their country. Or so I was told by a Belgian vegetarian. There are specialty shops which offer vegetarian chips in the city – which amuses me.
Some other guests of the hostel join me on the deck and we trade stories as the moon rises above the boat. I like this scene, I am very much at ease. My cares leave me, I am truly enjoying myself and immersing in travel. My priorities have shifted from writing and creating to meeting people, experiencing new culture and having a good time.
In the morning I go to Saint Bavo's abbey – which is in ruins. The man at the entry booth says I'm the first one to come in for the day at 11am – it is raining hard. Over 150 plant species have been planted among the ruins, to create a beautiful vegetated environment. The plants are allowed to become overgrown and wild to create a fantastical appearance to the abbey. There is a photo exhibition inside the cathedral there, showing photos of refugees from many different time periods and places. There is a magazine which shows letters and online messages sent between a refugee who was resettled in Ghent and his family back in Syria. It triggered a personal and emotional appreciation as to what refugees go through – as compared to hearing of refugees as statistics and numerical figures crossing borders on the news. I would reflect on this in the days to come.
More chips for dinner, then I drink beer in the common room and write journals and talk to a German lady. She advises me to go to Dresden. We are also both heading to Luxembourg and so hope we will see each other again. We do not exchange contact details, but instead leave it up to chance.
I go for some beers with a Danish man and two Spanish men from Malaga. We beat some locals at foozball before returning for a good nights rest. I am inspired to learn another language from my time in Belgium. If you can speak another language, then you can make more friends. I have enough Dutch and French to get by but it is hard to have more stick in the mind. French, Spanish and Italian make more sense to me than Dutch - because I studied Italian for four years at school. I think it will be the easiest to learn, but Spanish would be more useful. I will take lessons in Prague or the UK or both.
The next day is sunny and beautiful. It has been this way for the last week, one day rainy, cloudy, windy, the next sunny clear and still. I sit in the sun on deck until Monday before catching a train to Bruges.

Ashington firm FES generates new projects after buying new production center
North East offshore specialist Flexible Engineered Solutions (FES) is creating 20 new projects after opening a brand new production center.
Ashington-based FES has delivered a substantial increase to its 50-strong workforce after investing in a brand new 25,000sqft manufacturing center in Cramlington, and it may become a training base to entice new skilled engineers into the sector.
The firm supplies fluid transport systems to petroleum and gas customers around the world and, until now, has out-sourced some of its own processes to other companies.
The opening of the plant in Cramlington means the business will be able to take out some of those processes in-house, such as fabrication and production.
But with its whole supply chain within a 25-mile radius of Ashington, some processes will continue to be out-sourced after the Cramlington centre is fully operational.
The huge site also provides the firm with the additional elevation required to create new products for oil and gas fields in increasingly challenging environments.
It will also function as a base for apprenticeship approaches and other training programmes, directed at nurturing abilities which are being dropped to the sector as members of its ageing workforce retire.

Gender pay gap – Phase Eight remark on latest figures
On its website, style merchant Phase Eight says:
Whilst initial glance, our printed gender pay gap figures indicate the ordinary person has a greater hourly rate of pay than the typical female, this can be misleading and does not reflect the real story and culture within the Phase Eight business.
The figures result in the simple fact that, as a women’s fashion retailer, the staff in our shops are overwhelmingly feminine, although our company head office staff (whose pay rates are typically higher) are more evenly divided between men and women. Where this imbalance is not taken under consideration this will result in disparity across our results.
The CBI director general Carolyn Fairburn has been on Radio 4 this morning:
Gender pay gap: most firms pay men more than women, statistics show
Around 84% of companies which have demonstrated their gender pay gap statistics are paying man staff members more than women normally, the latest government data shows.
Over 1,000 businesses with 250 or more workers have published the cover amounts, which show that the gap at the average hourly bonuses and pay for male and female employees.
Based on average hourly earnings, the figures in the Equalities Office show 908 companies are paying men more than women, compared with 143 (13 percent) which are paying female employees more than their male counterparts, together with 30 (3%) saying there isn’t any gap in cover between the sexes.
Back in January, it has been demonstrated the mean hourly rate for girls was 52% lower than for men in the easyJet, although the figure stood at 33 percent lower at Virgin Money. At the time both companies said men and women in the roles were paid the same, and set the gender pay gap to getting more men.
Among those with the largest gender pay gap is clothes chain Phase Eight, where the hourly rate for girls is 64.8% lower than for men, and tourism company TUI on 56.9%.
At the other end of the scale, where girls are compensated more than male coworkers, producer Sweet Dreams leads the pack with the women’s hourly rate 46.4% greater than men, based on the average hourly rate.
Three Rivers District Council had an average hourly pay of 11% more for girls than men. The Government has made it compulsory to report yearly on their gender pay gap, along with the rest 8,000 are expected to release the initial set of information. The gender pay gap is different to “equal pay”, which deals with the pay gaps between men and women who carry the very same jobs.

Wellness warriors: Who can we trust for nutrition advice?
In the wellness world of bloggers, ‘fitspiration’ and social media stars, it can be hard to know whose advice to listen to. Healthy Food Guide editor-at-large Niki Bezzant explores how to spot fact from fallacy.
Celebrities have always cashed in on their appeal to offer lifestyle advice on everything from parenting to diets, spreading influence and making a quick buck. And now it’s easier than ever to have this kind of influence. We live in a world where anyone, celebrity or not, can present themselves as an expert. And consumers happily lap up their advice and buy their products.
The world of the wellness influencer
Recently a book was released by former The Bachelor NZ dating show contestant Matilda Rice. The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Living a Beautiful Life, described as ‘a refreshing, positive guide to life for young women’, includes healthy recipes, exercises and workouts and advice on skincare, beauty and fashion. It was a hit, with a second reprint within weeks.
Ms Rice has a large social media following. She looks like she’d be fun to hang out with. Is she an expert in exercise, diet, skincare or fashion? No, and nor does she claim to be. But she does have a following of people who are prepared to take her advice anyway.
Welcome to the world of the wellness influencer.
There’s potentially nothing wrong with this – motivation to be healthier can come from anywhere, and if a particular idea resonates with us and spurs us into action, that’s great.
But what happens when the advice so confidently given by influencers veers us off track?
Take the case of Australian chef and self-appointed paleo diet expert Pete Evans. His book for babies and toddlers included recipes health experts warned could harm infants, prompting its withdrawal by the publisher.
Questionable nutrition advice seen frequently across social media alarms many legitimately trained nutrition professionals.
So how do we know what advice to follow and what to set aside?
NZ’s nutrition qualifications
One basic tool is knowing how nutrition qualifications work in New Zealand.
Dietitians New Zealand spokesperson Lea Stening says anyone can call themselves a nutritionist – whether or not they have any training or qualifications. This means people can do a weekend-long or online course, or have no training at all and still claim the title. Conversely, the title ‘dietitian’ is protected. In fact, it’s the only nutrition health profession to be regulated by law. Registered dietitians have an undergraduate health science degree, as well as a post-graduate qualification in dietetics accredited by the Dietitians Board. Only trained, degree-qualified and registered practitioners can legally call themselves a dietitian, in accordance with the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003, and they’re subject to the board’s competency requirements and Code of Ethics, as well as legislation.
There are also registered nutritionists, who are degree-qualified in Human Nutrition with at least two years’ relevant experience. They are registered with the Nutrition Society of New Zealand in a particular field, such as Public Health, Education, Practice, Scientific Research or Industrial Research. Registered nutritionists are not regulated, but are subject to ongoing requirements for continuing education to remain registered.
The term ‘clinical nutritionist’, sounds medical but is, in fact, meaningless and not regulated by any organisation. The term ‘clinical’ in this context seems added to lend credibility.
Seeing through the sales pitches
Ms Stening warns to be savvy when seeking advice on specific health conditions from unregistered nutritionists or other ‘wellness experts’.
“Many [unregistered] nutritionists do a great job educating people to eat a healthier diet. It is when they start offering dietary treatments or selling dietary supplements that the risks to the public can begin,” Ms Stening says.
“It is very hard just to give general nutritional advice without also being dragged into some offering of treatment information.”
For instance, a person looking for weight-loss advice, who is obese, may have a cascade of metabolic issues and co-morbidities, such as pre-diabetes, elevated cholesterol or gout – all of which need treatment from a relevantly qualified expert.
When wellness experts have products to sell, such as seminars or supplements, it’s not hard to see how they can become compromised. Some offer good advice but can also be heavy on sales pitches. So why are we so open to advice from self-appointed experts?
It’s partly psychological. We’re often drawn to alternatives to traditional treatments that promise highly effective results. They’re more exciting than the ‘boring’ stuff we know about moderation and regular exercise.
There’s also evidence the demeanour of a person administering ‘treatment’ can affect how we feel about its effectiveness. How much we trust or like a practitioner can potentially affect how well we perceive their advice to work – an element of the placebo effect.
Whether a wellness expert is well-intentioned (as many are) or cynically seeking profit; we are wise to follow the old ‘buyer beware’ advice.
What about product endorsement?
There is currently no compulsion for bloggers to declare if they are posting on behalf of, or in collaboration with, a product or brand.
But the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand ‘encourages PR practitioners to make all appropriate disclosures and request or require third parties, such as influencers or bloggers, to disclose that items have been gifted and/or payments made’.
Sorting expertise from pseudoscience
Dietitian Angela Berrill offers these tips when assessing the advice of a wellness influencer.
Don’t be swayed by a blogger’s perceived success on social media, such as their number of followers, celebrity status or physical appearance. “Just because someone is ‘successful’ online doesn’t necessarily make them qualified,” Ms Berrill says.
Check the quality of an expert’s credentials and qualifications. “A three-day online nutrition course from an unheard-of university is completely different to having completed a master’s or post-graduate degree from a reputable university.”
Look for advice based on robust scientific evidence, rather than anecdotes or one-off studies. True experts know that one size (or diet) does not fit all.
Don’t assume an overseas qualification is appropriate for practice in New Zealand. And watch for the term ‘clinical nutritionist’, which does not mean anything.
Be aware of the filter of social media. Ms Berrill says. “It’s often a very photoshopped and edited version of someone’s life.”

Chris Jericho Will Never Stop Reinventing Himself
On the morning of Nov. 5, Chris Jericho awoke in Newcastle, England, waiting for his phone to blow up. Around 9 AM, in the middle of the night across North America, it happened.
Following a successful defense of his IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship at New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Power Struggle event, Kenny Omega had the lights go out on him. Omega was seeking a challenger for his title at Wrestle Kingdom 12 on Jan. 4, New Japan’s biggest event of the year, laughing between English and Japanese that there was nobody left who had the guts to take him on.
A screen lit up with a countdown clock, and in an instant, internet speculation and tongue-in-cheek, this-could-never-happen fantasy booking was revealed to be a reality. Through smoke and heavy guitar, Jericho appeared on screen. Smirk breaking through his goateed face, leather collar popped behind him, Jericho tore a photo of the champion lengthwise and laid the challenge down: Jericho vs. Kenny, wrestling’s ultimate Alpha against the man they call Omega.
“Dude,” Jericho says with excitement, feigning keyboard noises to mimic the online reaction that followed, “it was great. Most people woke up to it, and they were like, ‘What?’ And then they’re like, ‘We knew this was gonna be something.’
“You didn’t fucking know shit. You didn’t know a thing. Nobody knew.”
There were hints along the way, seeds that were being planted. Jericho and Omega had been going at each other on social media since June, stoking the flames of a potential rivalry that, to most, seemed possible only if contained within the online world. Jericho is a WWE lifer, after all, a Vince McMahon loyalist who hasn’t wrestled in Japan since 1997 or outside of WWE since 1999.
McMahon, it turns out, was one of only a very small handful of people who knew what was coming, a professional courtesy Jericho extended out of respect. The plan had been in the works for months, though, and it was kept entirely under wraps, to the point that New Japan’s ace, top champion, and Wrestle Kingdom main-eventer, Kazuchika Okada, found out at the same time as the rest of the world. Outside of Jericho and Omega, who didn’t even meet during the planning process, the only people on the inside were Gedo (New Japan’s booker and, way back when, a partner of Jericho’s), and three other New Japan execs who met with Jericho in shrouded New York secrecy in August to finalize the story.
“I’ve been following his career. I heard how good he was and I heard all of these great reports, and I was like, that’s great,” Jericho, who had never seen an Omega match to this point, says. “So when it was pitched to me just as a joke, ‘Hey, how about Jericho and Kenny Omega, that’s pretty funny?’ I was like, I don’t know if funny’s the word. I think it’s kind of interesting. Why don’t you kind of see what the reaction was?”
Omega liked it, Jericho liked it, and so started one of the first main-event level feuds borne entirely of a (fake) social media spat, a dream match few would ever actually dare dream about. (Just don’t tell Tetsuya Naito it’s a main-event feud.) It comes at a time when Omega is one of the largest foreign stars in the company’s history, as NJPW continues to expand its North American footprint, and as the tide of the entire wrestling industry shifts more and more toward viability of non-WWE entities as sustainable major players.
Tweets via Kenny Omega’s Twitter
“There are people that can rise above and stand out from kind of what they are, and Jericho has always, no matter where he’s gone, no matter where he’s been, has been one of those guys,” Omega says. “Which is why he has a legit argument for being the best of all time. And that’s why this match means so much.”
For Jericho, this is just the latest arc in a storied career that has always seen him stay one step ahead of where the industry is going. He was a part of ECW’s peak, the breakthrough WCW cruiserweight, and jumped to WWE right as the Monday Night Wars swung for good. In WWE, he teased his first debut with a countdown clock to build speculation and anticipation, returned later with a cryptic code that was early-era message board catnip, and has since entered and exited without warning and, almost always, with great surprise.
It’s an incredible rarity in the wrestling world to keep a match as big as Jericho-Omega a secret (his surprise entry in the 2013 Royal Rumble remains one of the best-kept surprises in the event’s history). It’s even more rare for wrestlers to continuously reinvent themselves, eschewing nostalgia pops to push the envelope with new and fresh ideas.
If there’s a defining characteristic of Jericho’s sure-fire Hall of Fame career, it’s that he’s made more returns than any modern wrestler without it once feeling stale. His absences have been just long and just frequent enough, the tweaks to his character just pronounced enough, for the same Jericho to bring a wholly new experience. His toughest reinvention may have been his “silent return,” when he turned crowds thirsty to hear him once again, but declined to speak and did so in as over-the-top a manner imaginable. It was as subtle and effective a heel turn as they come.
Even in his most recent WWE run, at an age when most wrestlers are working part-time schedules as the character people best know them as, Jericho was reinventing. The plan called for him to eventually turn heel, but the schedule was pushed back, leaving Jericho to try to hint at the change to come, which some took as him finally growing stale. The seeking of immediate storytelling gratification can be frustrating when there’s a longer-term plan in place.
“I started planting seeds that people were getting sick of. Like, the scarf. The scarf, Jericho wearing a scarf, it looks stupid. Now it’s the biggest thing in the world,” he says. “Or I started this chant one time for New Day, “rootie tootie bootie.” I knew it sucked. I knew it was bad. But I was out there giving it my all, trying to get people to say it, and they really weren’t. So [they said] ‘Jericho’s at the end of his rope, he’s got no new ideas, he looks like a fool.’ Exactly. That’s what you’re supposed to think, so that when it finally happens, [you think] oh my gosh, this is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.
“And it’s hard because you have to sit there and read the online comments, ‘He’s over the hill, he’s past his shelf life, he needs to retire, rootie tootie bootie is embarrassing.’ Like, I know, I know, just hold on and see what happens.”
What happened led to one of Jericho’s greatest accomplishments as a wrestler and a performer in general. After an extended run as Kevin Owens’ supposed best friend, the pairing was set to split. Jericho had a grand idea for WWE’s Festival of Friendship segment on Raw, an elaborate celebration on Jericho’s part that would end with Owens turning on him, to everyone’s surprise. Jericho got push-back from some within the company who thought the idea sounded too comedic, and he was adamant that if done correctly, it would be heartbreaking instead.
It ended up as maybe the most heartbreaking moment in wrestling this year, right up there historically with Seth Rollins as Plan B and Marty Jannetty flying through a barbershop window.
It’s this type of ingenuity that’s kept Jericho at the top of his game and the wrestling world at large for decades, making him one of the most unassailable successes of the modern era. It’s also extended outside of the wrestling world, where Jericho has dabbled in just about everything. He’s written multiple books, hosts a terrific and well-listened to podcast (Talk is Jericho), and is the front man for a successful rock band (Fozzy).
And last week, season two of his (very good) webseries But I’m Chris Jericho premiered on CBC. Since the time he first left WWE in 2005, Jericho has studied acting—improv, most notably—and for eight years tried to sell this fictionalized version of his foray into acting. Several of season one’s storylines come directly from his experience, with Jericho borrowing from Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Fawlty Towers to turn this version of him into an unlikable asshole lacking entirely in self-awareness and heavy on Lead Singer’s Disease.
The first season aired in 2013, winning one Canadian Comedy Award and being nominated for four others. It’s little surprise that Jericho was at the forefront of an industry he was new to, a little early to the game before Netflix and Amazon and others were buying up any original content for streaming purposes. Even with its success, he said it “didn’t count” if it didn’t get a second season. He eventually got that chance, and has the full weight of CBC’s promotional arm behind the series.
In one of Jericho’s books, he lays out 20 principles for success, his favorite of which is the David Bowie Principle: Always reinvent yourself. The gist of it is that it would be silly for people to have asked the late Bowie to go back to his Aladdin Sane days, for example, because Bowie had already moved on to the next thing. There’s an emptiness to the inherent reward of creativity with rehashing the old, and Jericho applies that outlook to all arms of his career.
“I love constantly thinking of new things and new ideas and new ways to present myself to keep people excited,” he says. “That’s what I do: I’m an entertainer. I’m not saying I’m a ray of sunshine in people’s lives, but if I can do stuff that I think is cool that other people happen to think is cool as well, then it becomes exciting.
“That is part of what charges me and helps me continue to stay at the top of my game, is staying ahead of things rather than behind. Because when you’re behind, you’re done. If you don’t move, you die. To me, I constantly have to be moving creatively.”
That means continuing to tour with Fozzy (through Wrestlemania season, no less), growing as an actor in his webseries, and trying something entirely new in wrestling, when it was hard to figure there was anything new left for him to do. He’s earned the cache at this point to do what’s worked in the past, and to do whatever he wants to do. Those things don’t line up, and so he’s opting to try something that really didn’t seem possible until it came about half-jokingly: An all-Winnipeg, Manitoba, showdown worthy of top billing anywhere in the world more than 27 years after he debuted, with the type of build that has kept the wrestling community buzzing with each passing promo or attack.
“That’s why I did it. I knew it was something that nobody expected would ever happen,” he says. “It came completely out of the blue. It’s a story that you tell. And I’m always about the story. I don’t give a shit about good matches, I care about the storyline that gets you to that match. That’s the most important thing. It’s the old-school way of thinking where it’s like this match isn’t very good, I got your money kid. You get those people’s money to get in there. And then you wanna put on a good match, but that’s not as important as the storyline leading to it, for me.
“Those little things, there are enough of those little signposts throughout my career in all these things, season two of this show, that really keep me alive and keep me growing. I don’t ever wanna go backwards, ever. Forwards. I never wanna look back, I just wanna continue to look forward and what cool things can I do to keep people guessing and keep people entertained.”
What’s next for Jericho after the biggest night of Japan’s wrestling calendar is anyone’s guess, but it’s a safe bet it won’t be anything you’ve seen him do before.

Chris Jericho Will Never Stop Reinventing Himself
On the morning of Nov. 5, Chris Jericho awoke in Newcastle, England, waiting for his phone to blow up. Around 9 AM, in the middle of the night across North America, it happened.
Following a successful defense of his IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship at New Japan Pro Wrestling's Power Struggle event, Kenny Omega had the lights go out on him. Omega was seeking a challenger for his title at Wrestle Kingdom 12 on Jan. 4, New Japan's biggest event of the year, laughing between English and Japanese that there was nobody left who had the guts to take him on.
Kenny, wrestling's ultimate Alpha against the man they call Omega.
"Dude," Jericho says with excitement, feigning keyboard noises to mimic the online reaction that followed, "it was great. Most people woke up to it, and they were like, 'What?' And then they're like, 'We knew this was gonna be something.'
"You didn't fucking know shit. You didn't know a thing. Nobody knew."
There were hints along the way, seeds that were being planted. Jericho and Omega had been going at each other on social media since June, stoking the flames of a potential rivalry that, to most, seemed possible only if contained within the online world. Jericho is a WWE lifer, after all, a Vince McMahon loyalist who hasn't wrestled in Japan since 1997 or outside of WWE since 1999.
McMahon, it turns out, was one of only a very small handful of people who knew what was coming, a professional courtesy Jericho extended out of respect. The plan had been in the works for months, though, and it was kept entirely under wraps, to the point that New Japan's ace, top champion, and Wrestle Kingdom main-eventer, Kazuchika Okada, found out at the same time as the rest of the world. Outside of Jericho and Omega, who didn't even meet during the planning process, the only people on the inside were Gedo (New Japan's booker and, way back when, a partner of Jericho's), and three other New Japan execs who met with Jericho in shrouded New York secrecy in August to finalize the story.
"I've been following his career. I heard how good he was and I heard all of these great reports, and I was like, that's great," Jericho, who had never seen an Omega match to this point, says. "So when it was pitched to me just as a joke, 'Hey, how about Jericho and Kenny Omega, that's pretty funny?' I was like, I don't know if funny's the word. I think it's kind of interesting. Why don't you kind of see what the reaction was?"
Omega liked it, Jericho liked it, and so started one of the first main-event level feuds borne entirely of a (fake) social media spat, a dream match few would ever actually dare dream about. (Just don’t tell Tetsuya Naito it's a main-event feud.) It comes at a time when Omega is one of the largest foreign stars in the company's history, as NJPW continues to expand its North American footprint, and as the tide of the entire wrestling industry shifts more and more toward viability of non-WWE entities as sustainable major players.
