Site Write Prompt #9: Fair

If a respectable gemcutter saw Vy’thanis now, they would be aghast at what he was doing. The twenty-year-old Elezen sat on a rock in the middle of a tiny quarry site with a board balanced on his knees. On the board was a gemstone. In his hands was a chisel and hammer. He was stone-cutting on a shaky, imperfect surface with no water or oil. It was insane.

He wasn’t cutting completed stones though. He was just breaking into them to see which ones would become complete works. He tapped his chisel on the latest stone in his lap and a big chip fell away, revealing beneath it the gleam of a star sapphire. In truth, he shouldn’t be able to so much as chip a sapphire with no more than a chisel and a board on his knees, but he wasn’t really using the chisel. He was using his talent. The chisel was just a guideline.

Setting the tools aside, he picked up the stone and inspected it in the bright daylight sun. Without water to wash away the dust, it wasn’t shown to its full potential, but what Vyth could see was fair enough. It would make a fine cabochon. He grimaced at the stone. He still wasn’t very good at cabochons. They required so much work to get perfectly smooth so they shone properly.

Naturally, that’s why Vyth was out here in the field, mining up star sapphires to turn into cabochons. He needed the practice. Oh, any goldsmith would happily buy his works, but they weren’t perfect yet. Not in his eyes. He needed to do it a lot more before he would be satisfied with his results.

Though he knew he was alone, Vyth still cast a glance around to be sure no one was watching before he carefully rubbed his thumb over the stone. Chips fell away from his hand and the starred face of the stone was rounder. He turned it over and did the same to the back of it, letting stone and dust fall away. Slowly, the chunk of stone began to take on a proper shape - flat on the bottom and rounded on the top. Oval too. Vyth had always been able to think in complex shapes, to conceptualize what needed to be peeled away to reveal the shape within. He continued rubbing his fingers on the sapphire, molding it with great care not to disturb the natural star within. It took perhaps ten minutes of coaxing and stroking, but he ended up with a pretty good sky blue star sapphire cabochon. He added it to the purse of stones at his side and picked up another rough stone.
