Jukebox Jive : a Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw x reader drabble

A/N: I kind of can’t believe (but really I can) that I’m doing this. I watched the film last night and then just a few minutes ago listened to ‘Buy My Own Drinks’ by Runaway June, and this popped unbidden into my authorial brain. It’s short, but hopefully sweet.

The Hard Deck was barely open and the few patrons nursing early evening beers weren’t bothered by you dropping a coin in the jukebox and waiting for Lou Bega’s ‘Mambo No. 5′ to start playing, the opening chords sending your body rocking to and fro.

Years of childhood dance lessons kicked your footwork into gear and the steps of the jive came back easy as breathing, even as you danced alone. Even without being led by a partner, you smiled to yourself as you danced, now drawing a little attention from the early imbibing.

Most of them were used to you being a little goofy in the quiet hours before you retreated to your usual seat by the bar to read.

You didn’t hear the outer door opening or the team of pilots spilling inside, most of them in full uniform and rowdy.

You didn’t feel the aviator shaded eyes on you as you shuffled, wove and spun.

You didn’t hear the footsteps headed straight for you or the sudden quiet of the Navy pilots.

You did feel the hands that caught you on a spin and steadied you against a firm chest, your eyes widening as the dance continued, your every move now being guided seamlessly by a man you’d never met. A pilot, too, presumably, but he wasn’t dressed for work like the others.

“Wha-?” you stammered, tripping over your vocabulary.

He grinned, eyes still invisible behind black glass.

“What are you doing?” you finally managed to get out.

He shrugged, the fingers of his right hand flexing on the curve of your waist.

“Pretty girls shouldn’t dance by themselves” he answered.

You arched an eyebrow and he copied you, lips twitching in amusement. The song finished and you both stopped moving, your chest rising and falling an inch from his.

“Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw” he introduced himself, still holding your right hand, squeezing it gently. “But you can call me Rooster if you like.”

You scrunched your nose a little.

“Good, ‘cause you don’t look like a Brad.”

He laughed.

“And you are?”

“Penny’s niece” a familiar voice said from over to your left, and you both turned to see Maverick standing against the bar, arms folded and eyebrows raised high.

To his credit, Bradley didn’t move or let go of you. He glanced down at you, searching your features for something recognisable.

“Is that so?” he murmured.

Your turn to shrug nimbly.

“Yep.”

He cocked his head to one side, finally reaching up to remove his sunglasses so you could see his hazel eyes, warm and hued by the sun.

“Hands off?” he asked, no beating around the bush.

You didn’t even bother pretending to think; you grinned and reached to bring his free hand back down to your waist.

“Hands on, Lieutenant.”

His grin matched yours and Maverick rolled his eyes hard.

“Buy My Own Drinks” Hopkins Mass Homily 9/15 “Well since we been done I've been trying to un-fall apart.” There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Runaway June or their hit song, “Buy My Own Drinks.” Runaway June is an American country music group consisting of 3 women. They were nominated for Best New Country Vocal Group just last year. __________ "Buy My Own Drinks" is an up-tempo, good-natured "female anthem." It’s about a woman who goes out for drinks following the end of a relationship and celebrates how she doesn't need a guy to have a good time. "Buy My Own Drinks," touts independence and a solo night out on the town as an antidote to a breakup. “And I've been thinking that some neon lights Would be a real good start Well I called a couple friends But they all say they're staying in So I guess I'm going out on my own I might be heart broke But that don't mean that I'm gonna stay home.” __________ But that’s only its superficial meaning. I think the subtext goes a lot deeper than that. It’s actually a song about staying strong after a breakup. __________ There’s a really good reason it’s an anthem to girl power. Four women, including the three members of Runaway June, had a hand in writing the song. It became the group's first chart single on the Billboard Hot 100, I think, because it reflects many people’s real-life experiences. __________ "I want to make sure that little girls right now have people to look up to in tough times," one member of the group says. Another agrees: “We’re busting down the door for other women to come through. “If that’s the purpose of this band, I’ll take it.” __________ “I found myself a dive The type he would never walk in Then a guy at the bar sees an empty drink in my hand I said sweet of you to ask if you could fill my glass But I'm gonna have to pass this time Me and myself, well we're doing just fine.” __________ Now, I really like the fact that the woman in the song is her own person. She’s now single again. She doesn’t have anybody special in her life. But she not going to let that stop her from being herself: from living her life and being her own person. __________ “I can walk my own self to the front door I can take my own self to bed I can medicate my own headache Yeah, I can be my own boyfriend.” The group’s favorite line, written by one of its members, is in this section. It’s the final one: "I can be my own boyfriend." “The crowd goes crazy every time we sing that line in concert. “That's a fun little moment.” __________ In some ways, this is all for the good. Even if we are in an intense relationship, we can’t let the other person do all the living for us. We got to bring something to the connection, whether we’re the girl or guy. It’s the unique contribution that only we can make to a truly reciprocal couple. If the relationship is going to be beneficial, healthy, caring, and mature, we got to bring those attributes to it, and so does our partner. __________ Now the concept of being your own boyfriend or girlfriend is fun—and funny—at least in a song, and in the abstract. But this doesn’t always work out so well, especially in an actual split-up. In fact, sometimes it can be devastating psychologically, socially, and spiritually. Sometimes, we can fall apart. __________ In my years at Loyola I’ve talked to a lot of students. I’ve heard a lot about relationships, some fairly long-term, that didn’t work out. Often, the breakups created pain and trauma, at least for one of the people involved. This is true especially when one person becomes almost totally dependent on the other—even to the point of becoming completely isolated from their other friends both male and female. __________ Likewise, in our relationship with Jesus Christ, we have to bring something to the table. He has saved us, but we’ve got to want to be saved. And we must create space for him in our lives. We also need to make room for others; after all, there’s no such thing as a completely insulated Christian life. Concern for others is part of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. __________ St. Ignatius says that God is constantly trying to communicate with us, and this is all for the good. But that also implies that we are trying to listen to what he has to say. We need to keep the lines of communication open at all times. __________ We’ve got to love God and respect him in the bargain. That means we must be completely honest with Him. We must be faithful in the good times and the bad. __________ When our relations with Him are like that, he’ll help us build truly loving relationships with others. Relationships that have as their hallmark a key virtue Christ talked about all the time: mercy. If you include that virtue in your interactions with others, you might not have to “dance all by yourself” or be your own lover!

They needed this.

Between the blackout, Maddie being M.I.A. before finally coming home, Chimney still being on the road when she returned home and then his string of bad luck returning home, and just life in general... it has been too long since their crew had a night out.

And the timing couldn't be better for Eddie and Buck.

Eddie, who has been dealing with crap from his family for weeks over the break-up with Ana. And Buck, who's just had his heart broken again because Taylor couldn't pass up an amazing job offer in New York. They need a night out maybe more than anyone.

"To better days!" Buck toasts as he buys himself and Eddie each a shot, only for Eddie to shove a five at him because he has been insisting he's buying tonight.

So, they're fighting over the five rather than taking the shot, arguing about either who is buying who drinks or who is buying their own drinks in some backwards attempt to make themselves feel better.

Hen is just watching the show, as she typically does. Seriously, when will they figure it out?

You walked into The Grill, ready to forget your ex, to forget everything really. You tried to get Elena and Caroline to come with you, but Elena had plans with Stefan and Caroline had plans with Tyler. You felt a twinge of pain in your heart, normally you would’ve had plans with he-who-shall-not-be-named but you found the bastard with another girl. It was time to have some fun of your own.

You knew he would never step foot in The Grill, the entire town knowing what he had done would be at your side in less than a fraction of a second. Downing your second drink, you ordered another. Joined by the very attractive Damon Salvatore. You smiled at him not wanting a conversation, you wanted to have fun tonight, not to cry. You finished off your third drink, flagging down the bartender when Damon slyly says, “I’ll get it doll.” You roll your eyes. “No, I will, I’m fine.”

Making your way sloppily to the jukebox, you are interrupted by Damon Salvatore. Trying to put your change in the musical box, you were stopped by Damon putting his hand over the slot for your money. You turned to him, crossing your arms and huffing. “Seriously, dude, fuck off,” you said shoving his hand off of the slot. “I don’t need you to hover right now.” Damon put his hands up defensively, “Alright, pretty lady, as you wish.”

You danced, sang and drank all night long. Finally, the bartender gave me my final drink and I began to head out the door, when your stalker friend came up to you. “Let me give you a ride, at least,” he smiled at you, genuine concern sitting on his modeled face. You giggled, you couldn’t help it, stumbling a little, Damon sweetly catching you. You smiled, waving a cab down, “I’m alright Damon, I can manage to get home.” He opened the door of the cab for you, tripping into the seat, giggling again. “I’ll meet you there, doll face,” he muttered as he shut the door, causing you to sigh.

You stumbled up the steps, fumbling with your keys, greeted by a tall cross-legged Damon sitting upon your porch swing. “Go away, Damon,” you giggled. Instead of listening to you he helped you get your key in the door. You smiled, but stood firm on sleeping alone tonight. “Thank you, Damon, but go home,” you stepped in your doorway. “Come on, Y/N, I’m not trying anything, I just want to make sure you’re okay.” You smiled at him, reaching your hand to his face, “Alright,”you smiled, “on the couch though.” You stumbled up to your bed, effectively passing out for the night.

Waking up in the morning, you grabbed the Aspirin from your cabinet, heading downstairs for a bottle of water. Smiling at Damon, who kindly has the blinds pulled shut, you grab a bottle of water. He offers you medicine, you show him your own medicine you picked up. “You know, you could just drink my blood and be fine, right?” Damon smirks, you scrunch your nose, “I’m a big girl, with big girl thongs and I can handle a hangover.

Damon began making breakfast, you wondered to yourself if this is what best friends are for. Damon pricked his finger, watching you hold your head in your hands, holding it to you. “Come on,” he ran his fingers through your hair, “it’s okay, you don’t have to be so strong all the time.” You smiled at him, happily sucking off the small amount of blood off of his finger. He smiled and continued to make breakfast for his bright little love.

Party Pal:  Itara parties.  Hard.  Drinks, drugs, etc.  It's a good way to meet her and maybe stir up some trouble.

Fans:  Itara has been performing since she was around 13 summers, starting with the little tavern in the South Shroud she grew up in.  She has also been known to perform in Limsa at the Drowning Wench and to have shows at the Gold Saucer.  She’s also been known to perform at other places around Eorzea, little bars, and small venues mostly.  Even if you have never seen me perform in game (a thing I hope to do more soon) you are welcome to have had your character be a fan (or not even) or to have seen her before.

A Little Tavern that Burned:  Itara grew up in a little tavern nestled in the hills between the South Shroud and Thanalan.  This Tavern welcomed all people but catered mostly to pirates, poacher, and bandits.  This tavern was built on the mouth of a system of caves which the owner used to smuggle goods throughout Eorzea.  This place burned down shortly before the calamity, but it gives lots of opportunities to have a history with Itara!   Any of the mentioned group or anyone involved with the criminal underground of the Shroud or Thanalan could know Itara from her days living/working/dancing at this place. Additionally, the owner of this Tavern took in orphans to work the place.  Many of these orphans went on to be other things once reaching the age to do so, so I’m open to working “siblings.”

Former Pirate:  Itara worked as a pirate for less than a year, but I’m sure she rubbed shoulders with a few pirates during that time. Following her time on the ship she continued to work for a pirate, laundering his money through bars she ran for him.  These venues are now closed and she has cut contacts.  Maybe some people are angry about this?

Crimes and Drugs:  Do you like drugs?  So does Itara!  She actually makes her own blends of potions that function similarly to MDMA.  Itara is not a good alchemist, so they are about as clean and safe as homemade meth.  Designer drugs are her thing, but she isn’t really a dealer, she makes them mostly for herself, but if someone wanted to buy... she would sell.  Itara is also involved with the criminal underworld and has deep contacts.  She's a good person to go to if you want anything illegal, from drugs to hitmen. 

Friends with Mischief:  Due to time growing up in the South Shroud she made good friends with poacher and bandits.  While her relationship with poachers is now strained she maintains good relations with many bandits and often brings supplies to the Redbelly hive. 

Trouble in Kugane: During Itara’s trip to the East with her now ex-husband she got very bored and thus got in a lot of trouble.  It's likely that she seduced married people into cheating, got into deep gambling debt, rain up large drinking tabs, made promises she couldn’t keep, and probably slipped a few shiny things into her pocket... and probably other things as well!  So if you are eastern based and have an idea for how Itara may have crossed you or someone you know... LET ME KNOW! 

More to come! I’m working on some more plots and I’m always open to ideas.  So if you think Itara might work into a plot line you want for your character don’t be afraid to ask!  She’s more of a side character and i work best working within other people’s stories!
