Note
wait can i ask what your undergrad and masters were (sweats in about to move back to the uk to do a masters program) and what made them difficult
rambling about uni under the cut!!
i did history undergrad and comparative social policy for my masters! the thing that made my undergrad difficult is just that i went to cambridge for it and the workload is extremely demanding for undergraduates, much moreso than for masters students (i did my masters at oxford and i know for a fact i was doing much less work than undergrads were!!)
so for undergrad what made it difficult: we had a 2000-2500 word essay due every week which professors expected you to read a minimum of 10-15 sources (chapters in books/essays) for, depending on the professor! (this is in addition to hundreds of pages of assigned reading for different classes) and then once you submitted your essay you'd have to go and have a one-to-one hour long discussion with the professor about your essay and defend your argument to someone who was very often a leading expert in their field, and watch and listen and nod as they shredded your argument to pieces... every week... for three years.
side anecdote: once i spent an entire essay absolutely BLASTING this one author for his take on a certain subject. i think i literally called him a misogynist in my essay. and when i sat down to discuss it with my professor she looked me dead in the eyes and said 'so i see you didn't enjoy my husband's book?' i am dying just thinking about it
so yeah undergrad was very tough and it's designed to be that way - oxbridge has an extremely 'sink or swim' attitude to education when it comes to their undergrads and they're very much of the opinion that if you can't cope with the workload, oxbridge isn't for you and you should leave and go somewhere else. i know several people who did! like they literally tell you that they make the kitchens cramped and uncomfortable to use in order to force students to buy dinner from their colleges and have more time for studying. lol
as for my masters, i found it MUCH easier to balance work and life! i didn't find the subject matter that much more challenging than my undergrad and in general i found that there was a much less demanding workload. probably because the course is only a year and is basically oriented around you writing your thesis! so i only had 2 essays to submit the whole year, and then weekly reading for seminars and lectures.
but i also found that i had to do less weekly reading than i was doing in my undergrad, because they expect you to be doing more in your free time to focus on your thesis and the classes are more of a framework for that. this is also HIGHLY dependent on where you go for your masters - oxford is still a pretty heavy workload for a uk masters. lots of my friends who did masters degrees elsewhere had a comparatively very chill time and a lesser courseload than i did, and i didn't even feel overworked! it always felt very manageable and a lot more adult
sorry i rambled a LOT but either way. i think you'll have an amazing time during your masters and please feel free to ask me any questions about masters in the uk etc, i'll try my best to answer them if i can!! <33

Top!Luke Masterlist
7-Eleven (ao3) - iCheeseYou (EHkook) Luke/Ashton T, 74k
Summary: Ashton Irwin is a master of thievery. He steals from general stores, food markets, jewelry shops, museums, and people's homes. Never once did he get caught nor did anyone find out his identity. He loves being a thief. Stealing is his addiction, and he has no intention on curing it.
However, there is one place and one place alone that he does not steal from, and that's the 7-Eleven at the corner street. He goes in late at night to buy things for himself and to see a boy who works during that time named Luke Hemmings.
Better Than FIFA? (ao3) - emiliathegreat (puckdummy) Michael/Luke E, 2k
Summary: Hotel nights on tour are usually a blessing, but with all the shit Luke's been facing lately, it's exactly the opposite. Michael isn't one to help, either.
black is the colour (of my true love's hair) (ao3) - hemmingscliffords Michael/Luke E, 2k
Summary: His eyes graze over Luke's ash blonde hair, the multitude of colours from various batches of highlights that their stylists have given him over the past year, the butterscotch coloured roots that are growing in from not upkeeping it, and out of nowhere Michael thinks that holy shit, Luke would look awesome with black hair. Maybe an ebony colour that had a midnight blue washed through it.
Burned By Love (ao30 - JcLoveex (orphan_account) Luke/Ashton T, 3k
Summary: "I don't think you do babe, I think you're lying." Luke smirked lightly, even though his pants were so fucking tight. "Are you lying Ashton? You don't want me to fuck you, you want that guy to fuck you don't you? You want him to spread you open and fuck you senseless don't you? Want him to eat your ass and call you those names you love so much while you ride his tongue, don't you Ash?"
Or the one where Luke has to remind Ashton who he belongs to.
Club of Misfits (ao3) - felixandtae Luke/Ashton, Michael/Calum T, 274k
Summary: ❝Everyone has flaws. You me, Michael and Ashton - we’re all just a club of misfits.❞
A club for those who need a friend created by two best friends.
Daisy (ao3) - boomerluke Luke/Ashton M, 121k
Summary: The last thing Luke expects when he wakes up hungover in the bed of his latest one-night stand is to come face to face with a freaking kid. But there she is all wild curls, thumb-sucking, and nonstop questions. Luke can't get out of there fast enough.
Ashton isn't the type to have one-night stands. He's a parent, after all. It was a mistake, and it won't happen again. At least that's what he tells himself when he comes back from his shower to find the naked college kid still in his bed, arguing with Daisy.
They couldn't be more opposites. At 25, Ashton has the responsibilities of two parents, raising his daughter and trying to pretend like he has everything figured out. At 21, Luke is a self-proclaimed Grindr god who doesn't care about anyone or anything but himself. So why is the universe (with the help of Michael and Crystal) so hell-bent on seeing them together?
do it better (ao3) - lourrygum OT4 N/R, 8k
Summary: takes place during the time michael lost his passport and was stuck in the US while his band performed in the UK. He feels upset about it and stops answering their calls and may or may not unfollow them on twitter, leading to questions and anxiety.
or, 3/4 of 5sos go to the US to see michael and end up fucking him senseless.
English Love Affair (ao3) - takeitoffhemmo Michael/Luke, Calum/Ashton E, 21k
Summary: Where Luke can't write an essay and maybe falls in love with his sort of tutor
FutureSex/LoveSounds (ao3) - Migs Luke/Calum, Michael/Luke, Calum/Ashton E, 47k
Summary: Luke is Med student/camboy with a crush on the Footie captain with a secret.
OR: Cake have a lot of hot sex for money whilst trying to pursue romantic relationships with other boys.
i think they're cute, though (ao3) - cliffakitten Luke/Ashton E, 2k
Summary: Honestly, there should be some kind of warning for shit like this: Your amazing, adorable boyfriend has recently bought glasses and looks fit as fuck, you're going to want to do unspeakable, dirty things to him. Please attempt to control your imminent hard on. -- Or Ashton has new glasses and Luke really wants to fuck him in them.
No Chance (ao3) - iCheeseYou (EHkook) Michael/Luke T, 72k
Summary: So Ashton's going on a road trip with his friend, Calum, and he invited me to tag along. Being the adventurous shit I am, I said yes, but I wouldn't have if I knew that Luke Hemmings was going as well. God, I hate that guy, and the feeling's mutual. Why does that annoying brat have to come along? And Ashton and Calum expect us to be friends? Yeah, right. There's no chance that Luke Hemmings and I, Michael Clifford, are ever going to get along.
passionately curious (ao3) - cliffakitten Luke/Ashton E, 17k
Summary: 'Luke Hemmings'
At this, he nearly choked for the second time that morning, since he just happened to know someone with that name. That someone being, his next door neighbour, the very hot neighbour, who Ashton may or may not have a huge crush on.
Yeah, that Luke Hemmings. Who apparently orders sex toys online...who knew? Definitely not Ashton.
Princess getting naked (ao3) - ShortIsNotFun Luke/Ashton, Michael/Calum N/R, 6k
Summary: Luke hemmings was the boy everyone wanted and that was obvious. Any time he walked in a room all eyes were on him and he loved it, loved the attention. But he never gave anyone his attention for more than maybe five minutes before he ruled them out as utterly dull and walked away, he simply got bored of everyone quickly. Except for the one boy who never seemed to notice him, the boy who seemed clueless. Ashton Irwin.
Or
Luke's kind of a dick and Ashton sucks his
Reflections (ao3) - punchinginadream Luke/Ashton M, 4k
Summary: Ashton doesn't like his body. Luke decides to fuck him in front of a mirror to show him how beautiful he really is.
Requited (ao3) - orphan_account Luke/Ashton E, 18k
Summary: "You’re the prettiest boy in the whole wide world, don’t you know that?”
Surprisingly, Ashton giggles a little. “There are at least a gazillion people in the world, Lukey… you haven’t seen all of them.”
“I don’t need to,” Luke insists with a shrug. “You’re prettier than all of them, I just know it. And even when you’re sad, you’re still the prettiest to me.”
Or, Ashton just wants to be pretty. Luke shows him that he already is.
The best kind of trouble (ao3) - CliffordAffliction Michael/Luke E, 71k
Summary: After Michael is sent to a strict Preparatory school he meets the school troublemaker, Luke Hemmings, and his world begins to change
The Bodyguard (ao3) - iCheeseYou (EHkook) Luke/Ashton, Michael/Calum M, 138k
Summary: Ashton Irwin is a hot and famous celebrity that all the people love, look up to, or despise. He's cocky, selfish, and always puts himself before others. Despite his personality, he's pretty much wanted by everyone in the world.
But when things escalate to the point that Ashton nearly gets kidnapped, his manager assigns a boy named Luke Hemmings to become Ashton's personal bodyguard, much to the star's reluctance and annoyance.
Now Luke follows Ashton wherever he goes to make sure he's safe from any danger, but Ashton is determined to get rid of his bodyguard as soon as possible.
Without You (ao3) - ofmonstersandmayhem Luke/Ashton, Michael/Calum M, 67k
Summary: Nothing made Ashton happy anymore.
He was slowly drifting away.
Everyday he prayed for a savior. He had the tiniest sliver of hope in the back of his mind that someone would come and save him from all this darkness.
His prayers were answered in the form of a tall blonde boy with a lip ring. But was he able to save Ashton in time?
(or the cliche fic where Ashton's depressed with an abusive father but when Luke Hemmings moves into the neighborhood, his dark clouds open up to reveal a sunshine)

LONGLEY COLLEGE SHEFFIELD
you have to give it to the new Slovakian citizens for cheek. Two boys from down /300 something/ Barnsley rd Sheffield /free everything?? do their parents still carry their old Nazi cards as many of them do? or Communist Party cards?/
USED MY MA ESSAYS on Luther and Cranach.. in their end of year tests.. stolen by their cousins on the corner of Oswestry Rd Sheffield, who walk in and out of my home as though it is theirs. Instead of going to college sit in the window, watching till I go out. There is a limit to what I have written on my Literature BA and MA so they stole all my BEd and even Advanced level English , but they also steal my personal stuff, all art, artists materials /my first Windsor newton paint 48 paint box I bought my self for my 70th birthday, food, clothes etc./surprisingly one of the worst food thieves is a ethnic indian pickpocket down the same street, who also stole some ten books full of essays and stories and university notes- It has been found that the mother also thieves from shops and friends but the father doesn't and is not really aware and the uncle has a beer off up the road /Steers/
Aneesa, Somalian from Stubbins lane was checked. She has more than fifty percent of exact copy from Fekete College and School books Aneesa refused to return to her tutor last year, after the end of the year's tuition, though requested several times. This though Fekete charged them half price for lessons. Aneesa was predicted a fail at her school but gained a second in her GCSE with Fekete's help.
Longley has been told just to mark it all, as at least a hundred of their pupils have used my stolen essays and private creative work and stories from the Writers Group I ran for years at Ashram Burngreave. I used to go to peoples homes to give tuition for mums with small children who couldn't get out. I can no longer help, as even buying a bottle of milk up the road, I am running the gauntlet of the slovakian criminal Fraternity... Three more families are coming Pamela of St barthS human research signed for them /the lab signed for them to be admitted to UK./ Pamela was a Pensions Ministry personnel, but was found to be embezzling along with another woman, so they were moved to St barths Human Research as assistants on high wages -

I've always been a nerd about democracy. When I was 10 it was the election between Carter and Reagan and I surveyed every parent in our neighborhood trying to gauge who they would vote for. Believe it or not, my home state growing up was as blue as they come so I assumed everyone was voting for Carter. It was so funny when I got to my friend Cammy's house and her dad, a total neocon before the term was ever coined, answered all my questions and I was like: So you're not voting for Carter or Anderson and then my brain went to Jessie Jackson??? because I simply could not compute someone VOTING for Ronald Reagan. (You have to understand Reagan was the least qualified person imaginable and the media underestimated him just like they did with Trump.) I was completely shocked when Carter lost and that was also the beginning of the end for Blue North Dakota.
I made a poster for the 1984 election, that I still remember because my dad suggested the title: Presidential Timber and it was about the various candidates, which I guess people used to say if you had a good character you had "presidential timber" anyway, writing this now it sounds super odd and I'm sure my teacher thought I was insane pasting a picture of Geraldine Ferraro on a tree.
in 1988 it was my first election voting! I got super into it. My best friend was Greek and naturally supported Michael Dukakis. In our little Dukakis bubble we went to see him on the campaign trail, knocked on doors and put up signs. I still remember one of my friends stopping and getting out of his car to spit on one of Dukakis signs. My Greek friend ended up marrying his brother, by the way, nothing to do with the election, just a really weird Meet Cute I thought you'd enjoy... Anyway the dweebie East Coast Liberal who looked so small in his tank helmet esp. in comparison to literal war hero George Bush, got crushed at the polls and I was sad for four more years.
In 1992, I was in college and I voted 3rd party, I think Green or Socialist Workers Party or some other waste of my vote. Clinton carried Minnesota where I'd moved for college so I guess it didn't matter really. I was totally against Clinton's neoliberal garbage and I'd just read Manufacturing Consent so you know...
in 1996 I voted for Nader/LaDuke and the Green Party. I went to see him on campus, got really excited by all the progressive speakers. Also I was in a union (AFSCME) and they rec'd voting for Bill Clinton who would later sign the NAFTA Treaty that sent a lot of union jobs to Mexico. I guess he was better than Dole for the Supreme Court noms but my god...
2000 I did not vote for Nader because it was too close, even though I knew Gore would probably carry MN (he did) but sadly could not even carry his home state. It was the first election I voted absentee in because we were in the UK during the election. It was a sad night. I was and waking up one morning to find Bush's son president made me not want to go home again.
2004 The Neoliberal hell continued unabated as the DNC nominated the Heinz Ketchup millionaire war hero who threw his medals away in protest of the Vietnam war as the party once again gave the finger to the progressive wing while offering a "safe choice" that public didn't buy, meanwhile Dubya and his cronies were building up the deep state post 9-11 to terrifying new heights and we now involved in wars at both the Tigris and Euphrates rivers which is apparently bad if you know anything about history. Robert Reich began writing essays about how this is the end of the American Empire.
2008 My first election as a parent! I still remember my son making me turn off Obama victory speech to go back to The Imagination Movers on Disney, his favorite show. I felt good about politics for about five minutes until Obama started handing out checks to the Too Big To Fail banks, meanwhile massive numbers of Americans are losing their homes and 401Ks in financial collapse. But you know it WAS nice to have a President that the world admired instead of hated and who was actually a wonderfully inspiring speaker if nothing else. You know he was a classy guy. You might even say, Presidential Timber. We were still in two wars though.
2012 You really only need to look at 2016, 2020 and now 2024 to realize that RNC had no idea what they had in Mitt Romney, a decent, ethical man who worked hard and had reasonable, not insane ideas. He was a Mormon so that probably doomed him with the fundies and I remember my friend's conservative Catholic mom crying actual tears when he was nominated. This was my first election on tumblr and I was happy enough as Obama coasted back into office and we had four more years of Biden eating ice cream and Hamilton the musical at the White House command performance.
In 2016 I supported Bernie and going to the primary I was physically shouted out of the room by truly intense Clinton supporters. The anti-Bernie machine was in full force but it was the largest turn out for any primary I've ever seen. It was exciting! I voted for Hilary in the general election because I'm over wasting my vote by this point, but my heart was not in it. God. Hard to believe now. Really because wow Trump winning was shocking and so awful. I remember on election night going to a bar and there was a table full of Independent Voters who were supporting Jill What's her name the anti-vaxxer and Bernie and the staff came out of the kitchen to watch the results. All of the line workers in MN in any kitchen in Minnesota are almost invariably Hispanic, usually newer immigrants and Trump was running on Build the Wall and racist rhetoric then too. Like how can you look your fellow humans in the face and be like "I'm still supporting Bernie because of shennanigans at the DNC or I'm voting for Jill because I like to smoke weed and not pay taxes or vaccinate my children. And also Hilary's Emails." Fuck that. Also this was the first election with Diebold voting machines and man....I just don't trust those...But it turns out the election interference was Russian Bots, so it was like probably half the accounts I blocked on tumblr that year.
2020 Held my nose and voted for Biden even though he was too old then and he's a neoliberal and Bernie was out of steam by this point. I voted in the primaries and the election with Early Voting, which is awesome and the greatest thing for ADHD people like myself. Of course there is all the legendary stuff that happened on tumblr, you don't need my recap for that.
So forgive me if I'm a little hype to have two people I'm actually really excited to vote for and the first bonafide progressive candidates in my entire voting life. Thank you Joe Biden for stepping down. That was the greatest thing you ever did. Buy yourself an ice cream. You've earned it.
Tim Walz is addressing my Union! (AFSCME) Do you know how long I've waited for a presidential candidate to actually give a fuck about the government employees that work for them????
"Minnesota has the best worker protections of any state. We're surrounded by some that aren't so my job as Vice President will be to take those worker protections to every state in the union."
and "Alls we're asking for is better wages, better benefits and dignity in the workplace."

bumpy roads & broken promises. (c.h.)
EDIT: Lmaoooo I did not expect this to actually get notes, thanks guys! I already made it onto someone’s fic recs-- I feel special. Actually might end up writing more if this gets more attention. :^)
I wrote this as a vent/comfort fic for myself but figured others might like it. Corpse has been my new safety youtuber ever since the old nosleep reader--deep voice/no face gamer went to shit so... yeah.
Heavily inspired by @mmonamona ‘s fic “Petty Fights and Lonely Nights” just more angst.
playlist
feng suave - sink into the floor
current joys - a different age
feng suave - venus flytrap
rei ami - do it right
summary: Corpse gets frustrated with work and snaps at the reader when she tries to ask what’s wrong, triggering a bad memory from a past relationship.
word count: 2, 932
WARNINGS: she/her pronouns used, coarse language, shouting, panic attacks, reference to past relationship trauma (no retelling, nothing detailed)
(angst, hurt/comfort, crying! lots of it)

“God would you just fuck off already?!”
Frozen. Your body tensed up as the deep growl echoed through the cramped dark room.
You had been staying at your boyfriend’s apartment for about a week while you were on break from college. Flying out from the UK to California so you could spend as much time as you could with him before ultimately having to return to 5am facetimes while drowning in papers and essays.
Even before you’d booked the tickets, Corpse was already apologizing for everything under the sun. The size of his apartment and its cleanliness, the fact that he couldn’t do much more than order take out for you, his irregular sleeping patterns.. the list could go on and on. And while you assured him every time that you didn’t care, that you were coming to see him— not his apartment, not home cooked meals, and definitely not to scrutinize him for things he couldn’t control due to his mental health. But he wouldn’t buy it.
Not one bit.
He’d offer you a weary half-smile, pulling you into his chest or ruffling your hair before placing a soft kiss on your temple and changing the subject. You didn’t press any further knowing how often he was at war with his own mind and couldn’t help but think the worse of every situation.
As the days carried on, you’d spent most of your time tangled up in each other. Whether it be a movie, or playing some co-op games, or even just laying in his bed with him, you could barely stand to spend any time apart. But, of course, you were adults with responsibilities that would tear you from one another eventually. While you did miss his presence every second he wasn’t around, you couldn’t help but try to make his life even better for when he got back and for when you’d eventually have to leave him once again. Now, a week into your stay, his apartment was a good amount tidier than how it’d been when you arrived. The cupboards and fridge were stocked with groceries that would hopefully last for some time after you left, on top of the home made meals you’d make together or for him everyday. New picture frames were hung up on the wall of the two of you that you’d gifted to him when you arrived; it actually started to feel like home. Well, as much as it could without those familiar strong arms wrapped around you every second of the day.
Unfortunately, this evening was one of those times. Corpse had already been locked up in his office for a few hours now, the sounds of button mashing and frustrated exclamations making its way through the thin walls every so often bringing an amused smile to your face. He’d woken up a bit anxious already knowing he’d have to both leave you alone and put up a brave front for the stream that was planned that evening. You didn’t push him or try to talk about it, knowing that it would just make it worse; so you two had spent the day as it normally would (though he always looked and felt on edge) until he was forced to retreat back into that dreaded workspace.
You occupied yourself on your phone and laptop for a while, checking up on friends, reviewing anything you’d need for the upcoming semester, just scrolling through your socials— y’know, the works. But by the time you’d gotten bored with your scrolling, you’d notice it was a perfect time to start dinner that you’d hopefully be able to eat together with Corpse. You’d gotten to work right away, doing your best to be as quiet as you could to not disturb his work as the different aromas began to spread through the small kitchen in his apartment. Finishing up the dishes after the meal was all cooked, you dished up two servings and set them on the coffee table in front of the couch before you went to retrieve your other half.
Turning the knob of his office door slowly, you peered into the dark room; only the silhouette of the floppy mop of hair you adored so much was able to be seen in the dim light of his computer monitors. Taking a hard look at his right-most monitor you notice an editing software pulled up instead of the usual live chat he had on while streaming, so without any worry of interrupting you opened the door and stepped into the room. It was a cozy room for sure, and it always seemed to smell just like him— which of course is a given but with how much time he spent in this room, it was even more so present. Walking up slowly to his right side so you wouldn’t startle him with just your voice you watched his gaze flick to your form before steadying itself back in the monitor. Furrowing your brows at his strange behaviour but not letting it get to you, you opened your mouth to speak.
“I made dinner!” You smiled down at him, taking a few steps back toward the door so he would be able to get out of his gaming chair without you in his space. However, the hunched form of your focused boyfriend didn’t move an inch. Your heart sunk a little at his attitude but decided to just try again.
“Corpse, baby, dinners ready.”
“I’m not hungry.” The short statement left his mouth in a low grumble, if you hadn’t spent all this time with him studying his voice and begging him to speak more to you, you probably wouldn’t have been able make it out at all. You huffed out a sigh, this was new for him, you really hadn’t seen him as anything other than the cuddly baby you’d grown to know and love. But, you thought to yourself, love would come with days like this and it was bound to happen eventually. Trying your best to not get frustrated or angry with his snappy attitude, you kept your voice light and cheery as you tried again to coax him out to eat.
“Corpse you’ve barely eaten today I-“
“I said I’m not hungry.” Startling at the angry tone you’d never heard from him before, you could feel yourself start to get choked up. Pulling your hands up to hug your arms, trying to sooth yourself, you could feel yourself starting to slowly freeze up. Goosebumps ran over your skin, a chill snaking  it’s way up your spine as you gulped, trying your best to muster up the bravery to speak again. You didn’t know what had gotten into him, he knew how the tone affected you— he was usually even the one to comfort you after an episode triggering something like this. As your mouth began to run dry, you took a deep breath deciding that he would definitely come to his senses in the next moments, you opened your mouth to speak again.
“Is everything alri-“
“I’m FINE! I’m not a FUCKING CHILD I don’t need you constantly checking up on me! God would you just fuck off already!”
You didn’t even notice the tears dripping off your cheeks until they splashed against the bare skin of your hand. Slipping into the defense mode you knew so well, your body switched onto autopilot as you began to backpedal out of the room, almost tripping a few times as you sputtered out a choked “okay, I’m sorry,” before closing his door once again and stumbling messily down the hallway to his room. Your mind was moving a thousand miles a minute yet was completely blank at the same time, and before you knew it you were tucked away inside the dark closet in his room.
This was the routine, this is where you’d be safe.
Trying to slow your erratic breathing you hugged your knees even closer to your chest, praying that in some way it would ease your shaking body. But inevitably, you felt the sobs that you’d kept trapped in your throat since you’d left break through. Your chest heaved with the breaths you took to keep your sobs as silent as possible. You thought you had trained yourself well enough for this, you’d done this a million times before— but in the back of your mind you knew that this time it was different. Shrinking into the corner of the closet, the only thing on your mind was all the broken promises he’d sworn to keep.
>>>
Corpse sighed, his body weighing him down in his chair heavily, head aching with all the work he’d been doing that evening. Pulling his attention back, he stretched his arms as his sore eyes glanced over at the clock in the corner of his screen. 11:34pm. Fuck. That much time had passed already? Raking a hand through his hair he yawned sleepily, he knew he should probably spend more time working before calling it a night but all he wanted to do was curl up in bed with you-
Shit.
Finally snapping out of the heavy trance he’d set himself in every time he sat down to edit, he thought back to the last time he had seen you— calling him for dinner where he snapped at you to leave him alone… almost 3 hours ago. The memories of the past moment flooded into his head and seconds later he was scrambling out of his chair and out into the hallway. It was dead silent, Corpse felt like his heart was practically breaking his ribs with how hard it was pounding in his chest. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Gripping at the right side of his shirt he rushed into the living room, rubbing frantically at his eyes as they darted around the room quickly looking for any sign of you.
“(Y/N), baby?” He rasped out, voice caught in his throat, walking through the living room and spotting the now cold meals she’d prepared waiting uneaten on the coffee table. His heart sunk as he hurried to the kitchen only to see the rest of the meal out on the counter, not doing anything to ease his mind. He called your name again and again; rushing back into the living room his eyes darted to the front door, a tiny bit of relief pricking his system as he saw the door was still locked and latched, as well as seeing your shoes and jacket by the door. Rushing back into the hallway he peeked into the bathroom, flicking on the light switch and with no sign of you, continued down the hallway to his room.
“(Y/N), please baby.” Flicking on the light his eyes scanned the room not catching a single sight of you-- when he heard it. Slowing his breathing down as much as he could in his panicked state he focused in his hearing on the small heaves of air coming from the closet. Stomach dropping, Corpse collapsed onto his knees, legs giving way from underneath him when he realized where you were and what was happening. Crawling his way toward the closet door he stopped right outside of it, he heard your breath hitch and knew you were holding it out of practiced instinct which made him want to vomit. But it wasn’t about him right now, so with a deep breath he finally managed to whisper out.
>>>
“Princess, I’m gonna open the door okay?”
Finally releasing the breath you had been holding, your lungs heaved for air as light flooded into the dark closet. Peeking an eye out from where it was buried in your knees, you blearily made out your boyfriend’s blurry figure kneeling outside the closet. With your body feeling like it was completely out of your control, sobs once again began to rack your huddled form as you shrunk away from him as far as you could into the corner of the closet.
“I’m gonna come in and sit with you okay, I won’t touch you unless you say I can alright?” You could hear some shuffling before hearing the door creak shut again engulfing the both of you in almost complete darkness, save for the few streams of yellow light coming from the cracks of the door. Corpse stared forward in complete silence, long legs bent uncomfortably and body hunched over in the cramped space of the closet trying to give you as much space as possible but knowing that the first step was sitting with you. The man beside you sighed softly, feeling his heart splinter with every heaving sob that raked over you; he could feel his own tears prick at his eyes and a sob starting to well up in his throat but he held them back. Mustering up the courage and will he finally opened his mouth to speak.
“(Y/N) I am so, so fucking sorry,” his voice pitched just above a whisper because he knew if his voice got any deeper that it would startle you and scare you even more than how you were already feeling right now. ‘I don’t know what I was thinking. It never should’ve hap-“
“Y- You br- broke your promise.” Your reply came in watery, stuttered breaths; the knot in Corpse’s throat came right back up, tears filling his waterline as much as he tried to keep his composure for your sake.
“I know. I know I did.” The man beside you managed to choke out thinking back to the day where he first lost his temper around you. You’d told him everything about your experience with your past relationships and how you were treated, what you used to cope and what he could do to avoid that in any way possible. He promised that day that he would never again raise his voice, or move too fast even when he was angry or frustrated, and made sure to note down anything that would possibly trigger you to completely avoid altogether. And he kept those promises… until today. Tilting his head to glance over at you, his eyes adjusting to the darkness of the closet to see you staring straight ahead, tears pouring endlessly down your damp face as your body still shook with soft cries.
“I can’t lose you (Y/N)” Corpse’s voice shook as he tried to figure out the right things to say that would keep you from walking right out that door.
“I’ll do anything. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, I don’t know what I’d do without you. I’ll be better, I swear on my life I’ll be better. Anything you need— it’s yours. I just.. I can’t lose you. Not like this.” He hated how much he sounded like he was pleading when he’s the one who fucked up. The last thing he wanted to do was manipulate you into staying with him which was exactly what your ex did when they made the same mistake time and time again; something he swore he’d never even think of doing. But here he was, and here you were glancing up at him with bloodshot eyes, hair sticking to your tear slicked face and body shaking so much you’d think it was below freezing in there.
Tearing your gaze away from his, you heaved a watery, shaky sigh trying your best to get your thoughts in order. While you had your issues, you knew he had his as well; and with as much patience and understanding he gives you with your snappy, frustrated, sad days, you needed to give back that same patience and understanding with his own. You needed to be brave here.
“Baby-“
“C-Can you just hold me? Please?” You sputtered out just above a whisper, and before you could even unwrap your arms from around yourself Corpse was pulling you into his lap; strong arms encasing you as he pushed his face into your hair. That’s when you found out he was shaking just as much as you were, chest rising and falling erratically with contained sobs as he tried to keep his brave demeanour up for you. Tucking your head under his chin he leaned back against the wall as he crushed you to his chest, the droplets hitting the top of your head giving way to the fact that he was crying too. Pulling your arms up from your side, you slowly wrapped them around his shoulder as he pushed his face against the crook of your neck, sobs finally giving way as he cried helplessly into your shoulder; further dampening the already tear-soaked cloth of the hoodie you were wearing.
“I’m sorry,” Corpse sputtered, hooking his chin over your shoulder so he could keep up with the heaving of his chest, pulling an arm up from around your waist to rest on the back of your head. As much as he wanted to run his hands all over your body and bury his fingers in your hair to feel and memorize every inch of you, he kept them still not wanting to overwhelm you more than this kind of touch already did.
“I love you, I love you so much, I love you..“ he whispered over and over into the darkness of the closet as you both began to breath slower as one. Shushing him softly, you repeated the soft words back to him before wrapping your arms tighter around his shoulders, ensuring him that you were going to be alright.
There would be bumps in the road but Corpse was worth it.

The Beginnings of a New Blog
Hey there!
My name is Rosie and I’m a qualified cardiac nurse working in Wales, UK. Welcome to my blog :)
This blog is going to be a mismatch of all the different things that I enjoy including; my work in the medical field, my specialism in cardiology, my studies to become a medical student, my love of literature, travel (now that the world seems to be opening back up again) and my plan to improve my lifestyle and fitness!
Last week I turned the grand old age of 22 and I’ve come up with a ‘bucket list’ of all of the things I would like to achieve by the time I turn 23. So here are my 22 goals:
1. Read 30 books (I love reading but I don’t make enough time to get stuck into my enormous ‘To Be Read’ list, so this year I’m tackling most of them!)
2. Get a tattoo (This will be my second tattoo but I am planning to get more- I actually have a tattoo booked for in a weeks time!)
3. Donate blood (I’ve already donated blood twice before but I’m definitely going to keep on donating as much as I can)
4. Apply for medical school (A large part of my blog is going to be centred on studying and documenting my journey to get into medical school. Even though I have a career as a qualified nurse, I’ve always wanted to be a doctor but not taking college seriously and below excellent grades which are needed to apply meant that I had to chose a different degree. Luckily many universities in the UK have alternative routes into medicine for students who have already obtained a undergraduate degree).
5. Sit the GAMSAT exam (a key entry requirement for all graduates to sit before they apply for medical school is the dreaded GAMSAT exam. My aim is to sit in 2022 but I’ve got a lot of studying to do in the meantime to prepare myself)
6. Lose 5 stone ( lockdown and the stresses of university and working during the covid pandemic has definitely resulted in me binge eating and using food as a comfort. I’ve joined a gym, started swimming and eating a more balanced diet)
7. Travel abroad alone (even though I’ve been lucky enough to travel to a lot of places, I’ve never plucked up the courage to fly somewhere by myself, this will be the year!)
8. Travel to a new city every month (whether this is abroad or just simply exploring new cities around the UK and closer to home)
9. Start a Tumblr blog ( Tick! )
10. Try 10 different cocktail recipes (I do have a bit of a weak spot for cocktails, I feel as though I’ve tried several but would love to actually make my own!)
11. Try 10 different baking recipes (Something that I used to love doing before I moved out and started university was baking. Shared kitchens at university and lack of funds for ingredients stopped all of that but I would love to start up again. There’s something so satisfying and calming about baking!)
12. Go to a comedy show (I’ve always wanted to go to a comedy show! The atmosphere seems amazing and it’s just been on my list of to-dos for a while now)
13. Book a dentist appointment (I know this one is a little bit gross but it’s something I haven't done in a while, I get scared very easily going to the dentist and I’ve been putting it off for ages!)
14. Write 3 medical essays (Is it weird that I actually really enjoyed writing my dissertation?! Well, I did. It’s a goal of mine to eventually have work that is published in medical journals but for now I’m happy just writing for fun and practicing my academic writing)
15. Sort out my wardrobe and give to charity (I’m guilty of buying too many clothes which eventually just end up in the back of my wardrobe, unworn and collecting dust. Last year before I finished university I managed to sort out 3x black bin bags full of clothes and shoes and donate them to charity)
16. Save at least £100 a month ( I know it doesn’t sound a lot but because I rent by myself and I’m paying my car loan, I don’t have a lot of spare money each month)
17. Go to 10 different museums and/or art galleries (one of my favourite pastimes during my days off or when I’m visiting a new city is to explore the local museum and art gallery! There’s just something so relaxing about walking through all of the exhibitions)
18. Grow my fingernails (I have a horrible habit of biting my fingernails when I’m stressed or anxious. The past year has been particularly bad so I’m going to try and make a bit more of an effort to grow them!)
19. Fit into my size large scrubs (the size I started with when I started University which I now can’t physically get past my thighs! I’d love to be able to fit back into them!)
20. Be able to run 5k (I love the couch to 5k app but I’ve never actually managed to complete it)
21. Go on a hike every month (living in Wales there are plenty of walks/hikes that I haven't managed to explore but I’d love to see a bit more of what Wales has to offer).
22. Buy a new MacBook ( I know this one seems strange but I’ve had my MacBook for 6 years now and I’d love an upgrade! Whenever I save up enough money something always happens like car insurance, MOT that I need to use the money on)
So there it is! My list of 22 things I want to achieve by the time I turn 23. I’ll update you along the way :)
I’m really looking forward to starting this blog and hopefully you guys enjoy the content!
See you soon,
Rosie x

We went to dinner last night with some wealthy extended family at an Italian place in the upper east side, and it reminded me of this Alicia Kennedy essay (from her newsletter on “why do glamorous people like restaurants where the food isn’t interesting.” The food was just ok and very expensive, and while I wasn’t surprised the conversation still smarted as they complained about mask mandates and how we just need to move on and open up and no one is getting that sick from Covid anyway and Biden is senile and so on. They lived in the UK previously so they’re continental rich conservative, not horrendously against poor people living but without much concern how they do.
Anyway always interesting if somewhat depressing to see how the other half live, or in this case the other 10%. I sometimes assume more money means more taste and makes a person more interesting but it’s just a veneer of respectability and interest hiding the same old usual workaday people underneath.
Re-reading Kennedy’s newsletter she reminded me of this absolutely hilarious article “I Class Up A Joint:”
I've never worked a day in my life. If I did it would probably ruin my career, which at the moment is something of a cross between a butterfly and a lap dog. I never went to high school either.
I once knew someone who worked. She was a charming woman, but there were some basic differences between us that proved irreconcilable. Lunch was a disaster. She was on what is ineptly called a lunch hour. That hour should reasonably begin once the person has been seated, but I believe it also includes time spent going to and from work. This left very little time to eat. I didn't go to college either, and I'm thankful now. Many bad habits are picked up there but the unpleasantest is the general assumption that everyone will pay for their own meal. This tends to carry over into grown‐up life. I have never split a check. A person must have principles. I'd rather eat cold soup from a can. I'm sure that she didn't mean to offend when she told me how much I owed, but I was truly embarrassed for her. I never saw anyone even read a check before, something she must have picked up in college. I've blocked the outcome of this episode, but I have learned my lesson. Now I only go to lunch with people who
How do I live? I haven't a clue. And it can be a little awkward because the first question after name and address is usually occupation, answered on a form as “self‐employed” and at a dinner party with a smart, “I can't do blessed thing — have you got any ideas?” Since my milieu is hardly blue‐collar this gives the impression that I've got a vast independent income when nothing could be further from the truth. My income is petite and dependent.
I honestly don't need much money. People love to buy me drinks. Hostesses love to feed me. Famous artists lavish me with expensive art works and heiresses do the same with jewels that I promptly lose. The fact of the matter is that if I worked a straight job I wouldn't have time to do the serious business of my life, which is to amuse and delight, giving my rich friends a feeling of largesse, my poor friends a sense of high life and myself a true sense of accomplishment for having become a fixture and a rarity in this shark‐infested metropolis.
I can't imagine getting up before noon. I think that if business hours were changed to something more reasonable people like me could be integrated into the work force without depriving us of the rest we need to dance until dawn. My only objection to the job‐set is that they make it impossible to get a taxi on weekends and make such crowds in front of nightclubs on Saturday that one has found it safer to forego Saturday night altogether.
I think I should be paid to go out. In sense, though, I am. There are restaurants where I just sign for it, and they have never had the bad taste to expect payment. You see, I'm good for business. I class up a joint.
When I was a kid my best friend's grandfather, a psychic, said that would turn out to be either a great man or a bum without ever having to become a male prostitute. I think I have managed to do both.
Problems are laundry. Designers give you clothes but they don't pay for cleaning. A truly sensitive person would, along with a gift certificate at San Francisco, give a gift certificate at Faust Brothers cleaners. Another is rent. I'm always having to pawn my art collection to pay this,. Marrying well would be the obvious solution to both problems, but you see I'd never do anything dishonest. It would be better if, when people took me on trips or invited me out, they just gave me a check to cover the time. Another problem is that in any group I am usually the poorest. The rich have a subtle way of ganging up on the poor one in their midst. They never have bills small enough to pay for their taxis. A rich friend once asked me how I'd change if I suddenly had a great deal of money. Without hesitation I said, “I'd never speak to
But don't get the idea that I'm in hot pursuit of the rich. It is exactly the other way around. I give no one my address and I don't have a phone, otherwise I'd never get any privacy. I'm never home anyway. If people want to reach me, they call Dana, Jody, Leslie, Dolores or Delia. Truthfully, since I got my new apartment last September, I haven't slept there more than five times. It's just a place to hang pictures.
I am a service. Whenever I have to buy Crane's paper for thank‐you notes the Government should reimburse me. There are slow seasons. I should be eligible for unemployment and Social Security, benefits. What'll happen when I'm too old to crack jokes?”

This should go without saying by now. You can’t read the culture-writing of current hegemonic left-liberal journals without abrading your mind on Pravda-via-TikTok-tier doxa like this:
Though Gross offers critiques of Emerson’s and Thoreau’s evasions, The Transcendentalists and Their World does not capture the extent of the mid–nineteenth-century Black or indigenous experience that the Transcendentalists excluded from their thinking. [...] But a reader of The Transcendentalists and Their World can go through this entire book and come away with little idea that the era, and region under study, was abounding with Black- and indigenous-led resistance to the practices of enslavement, unequal treatment, and settler violence.
This buzzword-ridden moralism has no purpose but to spank as moral truants the bad boys of the past (and Margaret Fuller, an authentic TERF, though our avant critic strangely doesn’t mention it). Because devoid of intellectual history, it gives no sense of the resources actually available to their thinking and therefore no just idea of what they contributed or of their thoughts’ fruitful complexity. Above all, this criticism cynically evades the critic’s class identity with the Transcendentalists by repeating their disavowal of the past, though they are now the very past being disavowed in favor of naively presentist identitarianism, barely updated Noble Savagism, as if “Black- and indigenous-led resistance to the practices of enslavement, unequal treatment, and settler violence” didn’t include, for example, the Cherokee Phoenix, its opening editorial modeled on the Declaration, or the emancipatory individualism of Douglass, as well as the proto-Maoist radicalism of Walker and Apess the author wears like a Che shirt. And the Transcendentalists’ bad faith, such as it was, generated America’s finest and foundational prose-poetry, rich enough to encompass their contradictions; the present critic’s bad faith gives us only smug ressentiment.
And that’s just one example of what awaits us in left-liberal culture-writing today. Why bother? The alternative isn’t just SubStack either. The real question: what’s happening on the right and why?
A number of conservative or at least not-left-liberal journals seem to have adopted the now-famous Buckley strategy of seeking literary and intellectual talent first and worrying about the politics later. Ironically, the old New Republic, back in its quasi-neocon days, might have perfected this tactic. Wieseltier’s back-of-the-book was arguably the best in the business. I remember when I was in college, on a dreary Friday night just before Bush invaded Iraq, buying an issue in the now-defunct Squirrel Hill Barnes & Noble and then heading to a cafe to impatiently, disgustedly tear past the “Idiot Watch” column—where they mocked, called out, and perhaps even cancelled anti-war voices on the left—to get to a beautiful James Wood essay on simplicity in fiction: “Is all good structure in a winding stair?” he quoted from George Herbert.
Similarly, whatever you might think of Unherd’s also somewhat hawkish foreign affairs coverage (“How Biden Can Defeat China,” “How the EU Betrayed Ukraine”) or conservative culture-war stances (“The Cost of Sexual Liberation,” “Stop Saying the UK Is Transphobic”), you’re still going to read a weighty, nuanced, almost poetic review by a bilingual critic of the immense new Houellebecq novel, which hasn’t even appeared in English yet. We could point to similar quality in not-left venues like First Things, Tablet, The Washington Examiner, and The Spectator. Even the politically irrelevant National Review has Armond White. A lot of these writers don’t even meaningfully seem right-wing, but it takes very little to get called conservative these days anyway; all you have to do is agree with much of what the left used to stand for back when James Wood still wrote for The New Republic.
Which isn’t to say left and liberal journals never have anything worth reading, but even the good work is marred by all the feinting and parrying writers on the left have to do with Twitter and Slack to get anything substantial said—e.g., Parul Sehgal’s otherwise insightful essays in The New Yorker. Venues that don’t demand such prose-clotting concessions will naturally out-compete their rivals.

How BTS helped shape kpop, a ramble-y story from me
I was in Asda (UK store) earlier getting some lunch before work and My Universe starts playing and I had to stop and have a little moment...I remembered a party I went to in 2015 when I was 18, just old enough to buy alcohol and so I was in that very same store buying drinks for the party on my way there. I was already a huge army by that time and was almost definitely listening to BTS through my earphones at least on the walk there. Well I went to this party and there was a big speaker connected to someone's phone and they left it unlocked and were letting everyone just take turns to pick a song or two, I'm not pushy so I waited a few hours to get my turn and when I did I decided to play Dope because it was new, I loved it, and I thought it had a great vibe for a party. I press play and as soon as Joon says his line at the beginning, literally everyone in the room complained loudly, someone said "not this Chinese shit" and another ran to the speaker and skipped the song, they had barely heard a line of the actual tune. A song that's just as good musically as any English or American song. I was SO upset the whole night, maybe I overreacted but I waited patiently for my turn and didn't even get one song because it wasn't in English.
There was other moments like this, mainly at college, where people would ridicule me for liking kpop. I got laughed at for writing an essay (music college) about BTS because the essay was to write about your favourite band/artist. Similarly when I wrote my final essay about kpop in the Western world and comments were made. One time we all took turns to show the class a music video we liked, I showed Swing by Super Junior-M because it fit with the kind of style we were studying, I looked around the room, saw everyone snickering and whispering amongst themselves because obviously it's so hilarious that Natt put on a music video of "Chinese people dancing weirdly"
Well I was in Asda today, and like I said My Universe starts playing and wow...I'm so proud. I thought about how weird it is to be in that same store 6 years later because at that moment 6 years ago it would have been WILD to play a BTS song over the store speakers, not only that but I'm stood there hearing this song they did with freaking COLDPLAY in a busy, popular store, which also sells both versions of Butter which I could see across the aisle from where I happened to be standing and just- idk man I just had a little moment where I felt so proud of the boys and what they've achieved and how they've shaped people's opinions in the Western world. I also felt a twinge of some sort of 'I told you so' resentment, like I'd love to track down everyone from 6 years ago who laughed at them and say HAH look at BTS now. Especially the guy who ran to the speaker to switch off Dope. Imagine being able to find him and being like "hey you, yeah you, you remember 6 years ago at some house party when you turned off the song I put on because it wasn't in English? No you probably don't remember that because it was completely insignificant to your life, while it greatly hurt me, but anyway- you did that- and you know who the artist was? BTS. Yeah, you know, Dynamite, Boy With Luv, Butter? My Universe, their song with c o l d p l a y? Oh you like those songs? Yeah I bet you do because they're chart songs now so suddenly they appeal to your narrow mind"
Anyway that was a messy ramble I just had some thoughts to get out, it's not even that deep, honestly I just think too much and I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm still BTS trash all these years later and I'm SO proud of our boys and all other kpop groups for how far kpop has come. Yeah, thanks for coming to my TED talk if anyone read.

There is a debate right now among the 2020 candidates about whether and how to provide “free college.” Peter Buttigieg, the much-hyped mayor of South Bend, Indiana, says that public college tuition should be free only for those whose families earn under a certain income threshold. He has criticized those who believe in free college “for all,” regardless of family income, saying that this would be a handout to the children of millionaires and billionaires. My colleague Sparky Abraham has written an excellent essay on why “free college for all” is so important and what Buttigieg doesn’t understand. Of course, Buttigieg is just plain wrong on the math: There’s no reason free college needs to be a “handout” to the rich, if free college is funded through progressive taxation. But Sparky also shows some less-discussed problems with “income-based” free college schemes: They’re more complicated and require subjecting poor people to humiliating bureaucratic requirements.
The problem with having “free X for the poor,” and only for the poor, is that in practice you need to have an apparatus to determine who counts as poor. You have to set a standard for how much people can have before they become ineligible, and then you need a way of reliably assessing that eligibility. This is difficult, and it means that no matter what, a “means tested” program is going to make accessing a given service more of a headache for poor people (who must fill out forms and prove eligibility) than it is for rich people (who can just hand over money and get it). Weirdly, even though “what it looks like in practice” should be central to discussions about means testing, advocate of means-tested programs seem frequently to ignore what the lived experience of constantly having to be means-tested is like. (Actually, advocates for many kinds of policy changes ignore what enforcement looks like on the ground, which is why France has debates about “banning” burkas when it is really debating “whether or not to have cops drag Muslim women away for their choice of swimsuit,” and Americans debate “legalizing” drugs rather than “whether or not to cage people for what they put in their mouths.”)
So, one good reason to provide free college to all is that it eliminates the need to check whether a person “deserves” or is “entitled” to free college. We know in advance that they’re entitled to it, because they’re a person. This certainly cuts down on paperwork. And that makes people’s lives better: If public high schools were means-tested, and there was a standard tuition fee, but you could have it waived if you met a series of requirements, it would not seem more fair or egalitarian. Currently, we do something strange where even though public schools are free, public school lunches are not, meaning that you have to apply to eat lunch for free or at a discount and have your income reviewed by the school district before they will give your child so much as a hot dog or a plate of baked beans. Predictably, this has led to the ugly widespread phenomenon of “school lunch debt.” This is not the case everywhere: Since 1948, Finland has just given children lunch, just as it gives them schoolbooks and instruction and playgrounds, which makes complete sense if you think of lunch as just as important a part of the school day.
Yes, there is a “fairness” element to universal giveaways like this, in that they treat everyone as equal. But it also just makes everybody’s life easier. As Sparky notes, we could pay for public parks by charging admission and offering income-based tax credits for park admission to anyone below a certain threshold. But isn’t it nicer when anyone can just walk in the park? I have written before about what an incredible mental relief it is not to have to think about money. The “commons” are wonderful: places where you can go without buying anything or paying for access. Public libraries, public beaches, public parks, public schools: They are held in common and everyone can use them as much as they please.
The leftist vision for how institutions should operate frequently involves taking money out of the picture, not just because we find it grubby but because it gets in the way of what we really want out of life. This is important to understanding the left vision for how healthcare ought to operate. Why is Medicare For All so important to us? In part because every other scheme makes your experience of healthcare much more complicated! We want you to be able to go to the doctor and not have to think about money. We don’t want you to have to think about premiums, co-pays, and deductibles. You should just be thinking about your health. And this isn’t utopian. In countries that pay for health services using taxes, when you want to go to the doctor you just go, get treated, and leave. As my U.K.-based colleague Aisling McCrea has noted, this is liberatory: It just makes you feel far more free, it makes life easier. (The downside, Aisling notes, is that you feel less grown up: “American: when I need a doctor I fill in forms A29-B0072, call the provider four times, and set up a payment plan with my accountant. [UK]: I go to the doctor and she makes me better. then I buy a Twix.” Descriptions like this from Europeans sound like they live in a children’s book about how a town operates.)
One of the big criticisms of “Medicare for All” is that it “eliminates private insurance.” Thank God! I hate having to deal with insurance. I just want to deal with a doctor! Nobody likes having to have insurance. Saying that it “eliminates private insurance” is like saying that having free college “eliminates your school loan providers.” And the people trying to tell you that you love your insurance and don’t want to lose it are like people in that scenario telling you that because you’ve found a financing provider that’s kind of better than the others, the whole financing structure makes sense and you like. But we need to ask simple questions like: Does this really make sense as a system? Can’t we do better? Is this amount of paperwork really required?

*story time* 3 years ago i worked in the uk at a hotel for a few months and lemme tell ya IT WAS A NIGHTMARE. i mean the people were nice, they paid really well, and the landscape was amazing but the hotel guests were total assholes most of the time and i used to spend a lot of time there... i would wake up at 6, get ready, leave at 6:50 and walk on foot for an hour (some 5km), then work my first shift from 8 to 11:30, next one 12-3pm, then i had 2,5h off so i'd usually crash in one of the empty rooms or go to the seaside, work again from 5:30pm to 9:30-10:00pm, WALK 5KM HOME AGAIN, GET A SHOWER AND CRASH. there were days when i would walk sth like 30km on foot and the amount of coffee id drink......oh god, this is when my addiction really started. this is when i would drink coffee with six teaspoons of sugar. and during my last two weeks working there i didnt have any day off so i was so exhausted i'd drink 7 coffees a day ;-; ANYWAY I just wanted to share this with you cause even tho my stay in the uk was exhausting it was also really cool and awakward and terrifying at one point as i managed to get a stalker for a short period of time lol
but all the weight i lost back then.......i dont think ill be able to get back into that shape ever again

Is there significance in Subcultures in Design? - Sahriel Nicole Sicat
1. Introduction
I have chosen Subculture in Design; this essay will contain arguments on why sub-culture in design is important and the influences that sub-culture has on design. The way I will achieve this is to define subculture and provide examples from research resources. This essay will also contain information on how subculture has influenced design over the years and how it affects design solutions today. Examples will also be provided to explain further and give proof of sub-culture within the design field, with brief descriptions on how it has changed the design and how it has either improved or not improved from the before and after processes. This essay will be concluded by summarising the information and what sub-culture is defined as in my own words
2. Defining Subculture in Design Subculture is defined as number of cultures that has derived from one main culture.
There individuals share characteristics and interests within these subcultures that have been influenced from its origin. According to YourDictionary.com, subculture is described to be a group of people that have created a culture that contains different beliefs and values from the consensus; something that does not typically align with its wider culture. (Yourdictionary.com, n.a). Bashin (2020) defines subculture as groups that hold values and norms that deal with politics, cultural and sexual matters; he goes on to say that subcultures are an integral part of society as they give balance to certain issues or situations. Bashin (2020) states that characteristics of subcultures cannot ideally be defined or made into list form because the definition of subcultures itself are changing all the time. Although it is known that subcultures are not particularly easy-going when it comes to who represents them and who are suitable for these groups; their overall identity and who embodies it is important. Grimell College’s (n.a) piece on Subcultures and Sociology: Characteristic of Subcultures, covers the general overview of the characteristics of subculture, other points that would define subculture characteristics would be: - Share different meanings. This means that although the identities or values of a subculture are different from another subculture, their practices could be similar or done for similar meanings. - Shared identity. This pertains to the feelings of members within these cultures; Grimmel College (n.a) mentions that people would feel some disconnect but having or being part of a particular subculture, even without physical interaction, made them feel more at ease and like they had more to their individual identities. - Resistance. This mentions three dimensions in which subcultures can take place or engage in. The first dimension can be active or passive, in the sense that it will take the intentions of the subcultures into account. The second dimension or micro level depends on the direction that the subculture is taking their perspectives. The third dimension or macro level happens when issues are being directed to those within political positions or dealing with political issues that are aimed towards the subcultures. - Marginalization. Marginalization happens to subcultures because of their unique traits and personalities that do not exactly fit in with those in the dominant or origin cultures. All these points briefly explain the characteristics of subcultures; it gives a vague overview of how these groups get categorized into subcultures.
3. The significance of Subculture in Design in identifying and solving a design problem
Subcultures in design shows major significance because the community of designers can be said to be or contain its own subcultures, for example you get graphic designers, fashion designers, architects and so much more. If you had to think of it in this way, subcultures can create communities for individuals to feel more comfortable in their interests, as they are able to share it with others who share those interests or values. “We can therefore conclude that graphic design is a communication form that utilizes the visual aspect of communication to transmit certain ideals or to stimulate particular feelings and emotions from its audience.” (UK Essays, 2018) Good Therapy (n.a) speaks about how subcultures can affect mental health; although this is a broader topic, it can still apply to the field of design. I say this because designers are put under a lot of pressure, this can be due to deadlines, time constraints, any mishaps that may occur during the planning and the execution processes. All these factors can aid to stress and can cause further issues that deal with mental health or health in general. Good Therapy (n.a) continues to say that within subcultures, communities are formed and people use this as an outlet or a place to feel more comfortable with themselves. This gives them reassurance in their interests, making it known that they are not alone and there is a place for them within society. If you had to put subculture in design within the context of how it has affected design over the years, then I would say that its significance still applies. I say this because design is influenced by traditional and culture, the styles and colours take a lot of inspiration from what is occurring around us. If dominant culture can influence our way of design and visual imprints on the world then so can subcultures; design can evolve and cater to any demographic it chooses, if done correctly and with the right message and/or intentions. Batagoda (2019) writes about the importance of looking at cultures and subcultures when designing. Some of these points are: - Understand which countries you are doing work for and where the clients live in. - How do graphic design trends change in the countries that your focus groups are? - How the visual language change from country to country? - What is the cultural impact of the country on its design? - What are the most common colours used in the designs? - Understand common font faces, native fonts and how the visual hierarchy is present in the design. These questions are good to ask when you are designing for a client; taking into consideration things such as, the demographic within the area you are planning to design for, their age, ethnicities, needs within that area or community and more. Thinking about the overall personality of a country and how they represent themselves within design projects is important because this is a form of communication to the public, it needs to have a clear message but still appeal to the interests and values of subcultures.
4. Examples of successful application of Subculture in Design in spatial design
How the Great Recession influenced a decade of design
Tumblr media
Figure 1: Sarah Lawrence for Vox (2018). Photograph. Vox. This image contains two sets, one of minimalistic style and white being the staple colour, the other half shows a more renaissance scene with duller colours, heavier furniture and very elegant design finishes.
Brooke (2018) wrote an article for Vox on the influences the Great Recession has had on design over the years. She specifically points out minimalistic design and states that the concept of minimalism is to purchase less but better things. I believe that this can be seen in the image comparing two different styles but they still share characteristics in the fact that furniture pieces, lighting, colour and finishes play a significant role in achieving a simple yet put together spatial design. The term to buy less but better things came from a brand called Cuyana, they wanted to encourage their customers with this phrase and with the recession in mind this was an action that become an impulse during the aftermath of the recession. (Brooke, 2018) Within this image you can see the similarities that have been applied when you think of the “buy less but better” phrase. Each space has their own colour palette but they both stay true to its main choice of colour, this makes the space look cleaner and open. The styles of design are true to the era they fall part of but you can easily distinguish that fact the modern-day minimalism holds a crisper style; the edges are clean and everything looks very bright; modern minimalistic design relies a lot on natural light and also using pieces within the space that won’t distract from the overall harmony of the area. If we look at what it is being compared to, the older design style has more rounded furniture pieces and finishes; they also contain a lot more detail but is focused on statement pieces of the room, such as the fireplace, it has intricate designs carved onto it which makes it stand out but it does not take away from the overall aesthetic. Design experts weigh in on the changing face of retail design
Tumblr media
Figure 2: Shweta Parida (2018). Design experts weigh in on the changing face of retail design. Image. Commercialinteriordesign. This image is of as store, it contains a flight of stairs which leads to a section of display areas for products.
When we take into consideration of the changes within the economic and how it functions now and how it did in the past, the wants of customers have changed drastically and is still changing. To change the space of retail stores to accommodate customer needs and wants again, Parida (2018) writes about Architectual guidelines and the inclusion of technology when it comes to shopping. Parida (2018) continues to say that buildings would have to change their structure to allow more space or passageway for customers to feel more comfortable when trying to adhere to guidelines of current situations. If we look at modern adaptions and compare it to methods from the past, technology is a large step into change and how shopping can be achieved, whether it be from physically going to the mall or doing it online. Technological advances for retail spaces can also be applied to actual stores within shopping malls. Design aspects on buildings would look at aspects like spacing, lighting, audio and other visual elements that would be the most effective on creating impact on customers. (Parida, 2018).
5. Conclusion
Based on the evidence provided in the previous section of this essay, I would say that the significance of subculture in design is important and still applies to how and what we design today. I say this because, it is evidence that characteristics or styles of design that we call modern, can easily be spotted in designs from the past. We are able to identify that they have been influenced by art movements, clothing trends, economic changes, the people within certain communities and so much more. Taking this information into account, the evolution of design can be considered a subculture itself.
