My Miracle Story, February, 2019:
Lately, my husbands health has not been good. I would say it took a turn for the worse starting when Flynn was born, which was 2 years ago. He has daily headaches that are sometimes debilitating, and he often feels achy all over. Lately, he has had numbness in his finger tips. He’s tried something called an Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP) off and on throughout our marriage, but he’s never done it longer than a couple months. This diet has helped heal Mitch’s sister, Lindsay and Haylee, but they did the diet for 8 months and reported feeling better after a year only. Mitch has been on the diet since December now, so this is the longest he has done it. I feel like every now and then I can tell he is feeling a bit better, but still very far from his baseline. This diet takes a lot of prep and planning since there are so many foods Mitch has to stay off of. I’ve always been super supportive of the diet and typically, when he’s on the diet, it becomes my diet too so I’m not buying and making extra food that he cannot have. I work two mornings a week, and previously, I paid my friend to watch the boys while I worked. It was the perfect arrangement, because this friend has kids that loved playing with mine and her house was near my work. She moved, however, so we had been trying to figure out who would watch the kids. I preferably wanted someone, such as a friend to do it, but right now in Dubai, there wasn’t someone that seemed to be a good fit. We decided to start looking for a maid to help with cooking mainly to prep Mitch’s food but also help cook all the other meals for the family. She would then also watch the boys two mornings a week. Flynn and Ryker only, as Ellis goes to preschool on the mornings I work. Finding the right person felt stressful to me and the whole thing made me feel a bit anxious to the point that I really didn’t want a maid. Mitch and I decided though it would be good to hire someone to also allow Mitch more rest time so he can get healthy again. We thought we had found the perfect fit. There was a lady from the Philippines, whom had been the maid for a family in our ward. The family couldn’t say enough good things about this lady, and the family was returning back to live in the US the first week of February. We had met this lady a few times, several months back, and she seemed nice. We interviewed the lady and had her over for a trial to cook for us, since her main responsibility would be cooking. She did a good job and we decided we would offer her the position. I kind of wanted to trial her a bit more or interview more people before making a decision, but the family kept pressuring me, asking if I was going to hire Elaine, the maid. The family just wanted to make sure she had a job set up she was happy about, before leaving Dubai. This is understandable and I felt like, she would probably be a good fit since she worked for another member family who loved her. She started with us and I kept feeling a bit unsettled about some things. I didn’t feel like she was the best fit regarding the hours we needed from the start but she assured us all was fine regarding the hours. She had very shortened hours at her previous place, because, the family didn’t really need a maid. They thought they would need a maid full time due to the wife working full time. The wife’s job didn’t end up working out though. And the wife’s kids were in school. So Elaine mainly just took care of the families’ dogs and cleaned the house. She would often go home by 4 or 4:30. I made it very clear that the hours would be longer and she could come later in the morning, but that my busiest time was evening with all the kids. She seemed to reluctantly accept. So Elaine started with us, and I was prayerful during the entire process. There were a few red flags regarding her attitude and demeanor. She only worked for us for about 3 days and I received an answer to prayer. It became very clear to me that I should not continue the process in hiring Elaine.
My Miracle Story Continued:
Elaine started with us on the day we moved from Jumierah Village Circle (JVC) to the Marina. I had her return to our apartment in JVC and clean it so we could get our deposit back. We previously lived in a small two bedroom apartment. On the day I dropped her to clean the place, it was around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. She asked what I wanted cleaned and I said all of it and she seemed shocked like it was going to be too hard. I told her if it was going to be too much to clean the empty two bedroom apartment, she could return back another day to clean it. She then quickly said, “no, it’s ok. I can clean it.” She was free to go home after she finished. She finished around 5 pm. I told her i could try topick her up and get my cleaning stuff and vacuum, and then take her to the metro for her to go home. Us providing transportation for her was not part of our agreement, but I was just trying to be nice and helpful to her. When she called, however, around 5pm, I was not able to answer her call. I was dealing with maintenence people to fix a water leak and hot water problem at our new apartment. I noticed she called and I returned her call a few minutes later. She seemed irritated that I did not answer her call right away. Then I told her that I couldn’t leave right at that moment to go pick her and my items up, because another set of workers were coming over as well and I had to be in the house. I told her if she wanted to wait until Mitch got home, I could leave and pick her up, but I was not sure when he would get home. She decided to take the bus and then metro home. The next evening, I stopped by JVC to pick up my cleaning supplies. I stopped to talk to the lady who worked at the front desk. She had become a dear friend to our family, and we were sad we would no longer see her. I asked her what she thought of the lady that had come to clean our apartment. She shook her head “no,” and told me that when I didn’t answer my phone right away, the lady was mad and yelling saying that I had told her I would come pick her up. She also had a bad attitude when cleaning the two bedroom place, stating it wasn’t her job. Grace, the front desk lady, overhead everything as she is also from the Philippines. Grace then calmed Elaine down and said, “You are suppose to help however is needed.” She then said, “you don’t deserve to work with this family. This is a very good family. The mom is a supermom and the kids are very good.” Grace told me all the stuff she told Elaine and how Elaine finally calmed down and changed her attitude. I thanked Grace for telling me all that had happened and in that moment, I wanted to fall my knees to thank my Heavenly Father for helping me know clearly that Elaine was not a good fit. I had had a few feelings that she wasn’t a good fit, but I kept telling myself, “maybe it’s because I don’t really want a maid,” etc I later did express my gratitude to my Father in Heaven for helping me and for looking out for my family. Me telling Elaine that we did not want her to work for us and we were not going to sponsor her visa did not go over well. She shouted at me off and on for a few hours and kept asking why. I calmly told her why she wasn’t a good fit several times and by the end she was hugging me and asking me to help her find another family to work with. I feel like Elaine has some temperament issues. By the end, I had a headache and felt thankful I didn’t have to deal with her anymore. I also felt thankful it ended on what seemed to be good terms, as I’m the type of person that does not like conflict with anyone. I fired Elaine on a Wednesday afternoon, and on Thursday morning I received a message from Grace, giving me a phone number of a lady, who was an acquaintance of hers. This lady was looking for a maid position. I thanked her but did not act on messaging the lady, because I really had wanted the referral to be from a family I knew that had previously used the maid.
My Miracle Story Continued:
Preferably, from a family I knew well. Grace did not know this lady very long and had only met her through the lady coming to JVC to clean. By the end of the day Thursday I thought, “What the heck. I guess I can just interview the lady.” So I messaged her that night. She messaged me back and was willing to interview. Typically, maids only have Fridays off, so I asked if she was free to interview Friday afternoon or evening. She said she had church in the evening. I thought maybe it was catholic mass or something. I told her we have church in the morning. Two things stood out to me though that made me decide to invite her to interview. She said she use to own a restaurant in the Philippines, and she likes cooking. She also stated she has 5 children of her own. Then the miracle unfolded. She asked me via text “Mam, what religion are you? Me, I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.” At that moment I nearly dropped my phone and said “What” in complete awe. Then tears started streaming down my face? Lynie, the lady I was messaging, wrote me and said, “Tears flow Right now. I’ve been praying to find a member family to work for.” I told Mitch the story, and he said, “wow! That’s an amazing story! You need to write it in your journal.” Then he said, “now let’s hope it works out with this lady or it could be really awkward.” Ha. We met at church the next day. She typically attends the Philippino ward in the evening, but she went to our ward in the morning to meet our family. She is now our maid and we feel so blessed to have her help and hopefully in return touch and help her life as well. She has been a very good fit for our family. Grace had no idea that Lynie and I were the same religion when she messaged me that day! I told Grace that she was an instrument in God’s hands.
