Cabbage Whites (Pieris rapae) mating in my parents' garden, September 2018. First spotted in North America near Quebec City in the 1860s, the Cabbage White has spread across the continent, and is one of our most widely distributed butterflies. Their caterpillars feed on a wide variety of plants, and secrete a fluid that repels ants. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #cabbagewhite #cabbagewhitebutterfly #pieris #pierisrapae #pieridae #butterflies_of_our_world #insects_of_our_world #invert_macro #lepidopteras #gardenbutterfly #blognorfolk #norfolkwild #gardenbugs #backyardbugs #insectsmating (at Norfolk County, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfJ4pnA1UN/?utm_medium=tumblr

Northern Pearly-eye (Lethe anthedon) on the Lynn Valley Trail this month. The caterpillars of this Butterfly feed on grasses beneath the canopy of deciduous woodlands. The adult Butterflies don't often visit flowers, instead seeking sap flows, mud puddles and occasionally dung. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #northernpearlyeye #letheanthedon #butterflyphoto #butterflies_of_our_world #lovebutterflies #ontariobutterflies #butterfliesofcanada #woodlandbutterflies #lynnvalleytrail #norfolkwild #blognorfolk #gonorfolk (at Lynn Valley Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRtrTRSJsNQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Silver-Spotted Skipper (Epargyreus clarus) on the Lynn Valley Trail, June 2018. This species is the largest Butterfly of the Skipper Family (Hesperiidae) in Ontario. There are about 3700 species of Skippers around the world, but only 51 occur in Ontario. They're easily recognized once you've seen a couple thanks to their distinctive stout shape and broad heads. . . . . . . . #nature #ontario #silverspottedskipper #silverspottedskipperbutterfly #epargyreusclarus #butterflies_of_our_world #butterfliesofontario #canadanature #insects_of_our_world #skipperbutterflyphotography #lynnvalleytrail #blognorfolk #norfolkwild #butterflywatch (at Lynn Valley Trail) https://www.instagram.com/p/CP8jNj6glT8/?utm_medium=tumblr
