Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Although it has no true governing power, the Emperor of India butterfly certainly deserves its royal title! More commonly known as the Kaisar-i-Hind in Hindi and Urdu, this species is renowned for its bright green wings. This color comes from microscopic structures called photonic crystals, which scatters light to create a vibrant, iridescent color.

Talk about a transformation! When an orange oak leaf butterfly (Kallima inachus) closes its wings, it looks like a dead leaf. When it opens its wings, there's a dazzling display of color.

Okay, so my watercolor blending is actually fucking awful. Now I remember why I gave up on this medium...
Well, at least it's something to work on. At least I scanned my artwork this time rather than just taking a photo?
Just like my last butterfly artwork, the reference for this species comes from Butterflies & Moths: The Clearest Recognition Guide Available by David J. Carter (DK Smithsonian Handbooks, pub 2002).
Materials:
Speedball black India ink (for the background)
Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors (for color)
Poems About You watercolors (for color)
mechanical pencil + eraser (for sketching)

Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary debut, “The Elephant Whisperers,” shines a spotlight on the ways in which climate change and human encroachment are rapidly destroying the habitats of Asian elephants. The film’s dire warning is subtly woven into a heartfelt narrative about forging family in unlikely places with elephant caretakers Bomman and Bellie at its core. The duo raise an orphaned elephant named Raghu, whom they’ve cared for since infancy, as well as another calf named Ammu.
