I'm still indecisive about Robins color palette. In my mind I know the dark hair + blue eyes is the better choice. It looks more cohesive. it has a nice contrast while still carrying some of the warmth that I wanted to convey in their design, via the gradient AND it works well with the entire line up. But the strawberry pink has stolen my heart a little.. (and then Bog came in and added a very unneeded third option into the mix)

Will say, some of these color choices are very expected but others took me quite by surprise. Kylar, Sydney, Avery and Alex make a lot of sense to me: ofc Kylar likes black, they're THE emo/scene poster child of the game. Sydney too, I mean, first of all their eyes are amber. Second: Yellow is often associated with gold and/or holiness. Its also a very happy color. Extremely fitting and it works well with purple, the "corruption" color (also hee hee Sydee validation for me personally) Avery: Blue is THE business color and it works as a fun contrast to her hot temper <3 I love it when I'm right

Alex: I didn't quite expect orange but I do associate them with it bc they're ginger to me. Warm colors like brown and orange remind me of alex. (My Alex color palette association is: orange, browns, blues and greens)

_______ Now, for the ones that surprised me: Robin, Whitney and Eden

Robin: Only came as a surprise to me bc I also associate Robin with warm colors. But purple works, its a cute color for a cute character. also a fun coincidental nod to their - kinda - trans subplot?

Whitney: I think this was the most unexpected one to me. Among all of the colors, Green is a very chill color to pick for someone like Whitney. red definitely would've been the obvious choice here. (I think red or that greenish neon yellow would've been my guesses. Green genuinely would've been last on my list ghjhgjh) Eden: I can definitely see angles that make red work for eden (hunting = blood?? lmao or red = Bailey hee hee Eden/Bailey) but I very predictably thought they would like green... I know, groundbreaking choice for the hermit/hunter character, what can I say

val cruz - ex. black/mexican mechanic who was really into monogamy and ro tried it out but it didn't work out, especially after ro got shot and val took care of her after and acted like she was going to break forever forth. now won't answer her phone calls even tho she's still her mechanic, and also is the cousin of an ER nurse at the hospital who now hates ro a little over it all.

ward easton - the best friend/fwb and fellow resident/future cardo and vascular surgeon. cis black stud with an enormous ego that she has earned and daughter of a famous surgeon so she and ro understand each other all too well. end up married to another character of mine, imani jelan, after being forced together by fate.

gabrielle pierce - white latina cardiothorasic surgeon hot shot who has approximately zero interests outside of surgery and cardio (the exercise). married to kennedy grey but did not tell ro that she was married to kennedy grey until she accidentally sent kennedy a text meant for ro and kennedy marched back to town and shamed her.

kennedy grey - the most gorgeous and talented femme dyke on the planet. literally wrote the textbook on fetal surgery, the most hardcore of specialties. also does neonatal, one of the other most hardcore of specialties. she is a black trans woman and was married to pierce for about ten years after meeting in college and hating each other, but met back up at a conference years later and got together. told ro that she was married the night they met but not to who and took her and ward home from a bar.

ambrose bright - the original token cis girlfriend. she's the less-problematic-towards-women, lesbian jackson avery, a mixed black/white jewish plastic surgeon who specializes in gender-affirming surgeries. was roommates w pierce during college and got bullied by her for being too nice. had a huge crush on kennedy but didn't think she was interested (of course, not true: kennedy also had a mondo crush on her). tried to get her and pierce together in a desperate attempt to get kennedy to see what was right in front of her but it, uh, did not work. travels around the world doing pro bono work. "made" ro fall in love w her over the course of her month doing lectures at ro's med school and then bailed to go back to her travels. has a huge family who absolutely adores ro and all the other future wives, who largely don't have great relationships w their families and it's very sweet.

ryu nakamura - trans woman, mixed japanese/puerto rican ASSASSIN (and biomedical engineer), and a prosthetic arm and leg that she helped design herself, complete with cool cyberpunky lighting elements. baby genius who went to college at 15 but then got roped into taking over the "family business" and hates it. has been friends w ro online for years but they never met in person until she got flung through ro's apartment window by a mutated man w a big hammer or something. dreams of being able to wear sweater vests and dorky ties w math jokes on them to work in a biomedical engineering lab.

calvin coleman - ro's childhood best friend and crush who grew up into a big butch who wears a lot of cozy sweaters. she is chinese and black, and ends up following in her bad ass single mother's footsteps of becoming both a pediatric and pediatric neurosurgeon. stopped being friends w ro when they were 15 after a GRAVE miscommunication in which she thought ro was being mean about finding out that calvin is trans when actually ro was being defensive about calvin finding out ro is trans. now they're doing their peds neuro fellowship together. it's only a ittle awkward.

asa aaraas - mixed native siberian and inuit hockey player turned permaculture farmer and "amateur" carpenter. does lots of crafting and has an adorable dog named duck. when she meets ro, she's in the process of building a whole house and setting up a farm for her mother. big softy, super sweet, wears a lot of flannel, and like 6'7". oof.

rhys blackthorn - the token white one (irish specifically, was born there so she's got the pretty accent). she's also a big trans butch. used to be a sailor and then was in a punk band, and now she's one of the foremost ortho surgeons in the country who specializes in nerve work and putting back together what most cannot. ro has been obsessed w her work for years and briefly thought that (because of the name) she was an old man and has said the phrase "they're going to have to take away my lezzy card" a lot about the situation but is extremely relieved to find out that she's a hot lady instead. loves flowery prose and listens to romance novel audiobooks while she works in her garden.

elias machado - brazilian/cuban butch who is always a little chilly bc of bad circulation but loves to break out a floral button up when the mood (and weather) strikes. winner of the Most Autistic of Undiagnosed Autism. the best pediatric neurosurgeon in the world, rightfully self-appointed. super grand master chess champion or something. loves board games and has prophetic dreams about her future in which she sees herself w a gaggle of wives and therefore avoids every single one of them like the plague bc she thinks she's not good enough for them like she is in the dreams. my beloved. i love her so fucking much.

emile dray - an eccentric artist who lives in a dramatic art nouveau house that she has spent at least 10 years refurbishing after the last of the lesbian art commune ladies who used to live there moved out. enjoys her days most when they are spent doing nude figure painting and having lesbian orgies, but her day job is being a reconstructive specialist and OB. is french mixed with middle eastern (we haven't narrowed down exactly where yet so sorry for being vague) jewish and loves to make fun of the french by saying "let them eat cock."

tane rata - trans butch maori woman and resident interested in ortho and trauma. a powerful "alteration freak" (affectionate) who is able to magically change her body and uses it in, uh, interesting ways. pulled her hot wives by being a secret softie even tho she pretended she wasn't interested in relationships for forever bc she didn't think anyone would ever feel like that about her. i will cradle her in my bosom until my dying day.

Sure!! I should probably take this opportunity to share! Thanks for asking 😊 Sorry this took a few days, I was thinking about what all I wanted to say about it

I would call the book a new adult novel (so for people age 18-22ish), but I guess it would potentially be considered an ‘epic’ (lol) because it’s so damn long at this point (nearing 1000 pages hahaaa)

The story takes place in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is told from the alternating first person perspective of three characters named Rudolf, Avery, and Ian. Rudolf and Avery go to a fictional art school together and Ian goes to UofM. They are all very different but very sweet in their own ways and I would say the main point of the book is to show each of their experiences and growth in a way that’s relatable for the majority of queer people in one way or another.

Rudolf is a very shy and antisocial sophomore. He’s gay, and not exactly in the closet, but he doesn’t really know many people and so has no community. He’s funny and very sarcastic, but has some mental health issues. He’s a sweet kid, just got some problems. Don’t we all! Anyway, regardless of his interpersonal issues, he’s a pretty damn good painter. He struggles with the structure of art school though, and can’t seem to make it work for himself. Then he meets Cameron and Avery.

Cameron and Avery are seniors who are about to graduate. Cameron has his shit allllll figured out and he make sure everyone knows it. He’s a talented sculptor (mostly he’s just rich) and is very ~popular~ and ~attractive~ and gay. Rudolf is totally starstruck by him, as is basically everyone else.

Avery is Cameron’s best friend. She’s a painter like Rudolf. She paints these ridiculous giant canvasses of like...rabid animals and lesbian cows. She’s a big tall butch with a mess of curly hair who’s kind of standoffish but only because she has resting bitch face lol. She’s actually very caring and loving but she’s not very good at expressing her emotions.

The three of them start hanging out because Cameron takes a liking to Rudolf after seeing him in a class with Avery. Shit gets crazy. Everything that ensues is exactly the opposite of what you would expect. Stuff gets really rough. Then it gets better. You will laugh, you will cry 😌

Then on the other side of the city we have Ian. All these characters do come together at a certain point, but it takes a while.

Ian is also a senior but at a different school. He’s also gay, but closeted. He comes from an extremely religious background and grew up in rural Minnesota. He lives with his childhood best friend Everest and Everest’s girlfriend Gwen.

Ian has it BAD for Everest. Seriously, this poor guy, he is torturingggg himself over it. It’s very sweet and innocent, lots of rose colored glasses going on here if you know what I mean. Everest is a sweetheart too, and he’s so nice to Ian. He’s not as perfect as Ian thinks, though.

I guess to break it down, the main overarching theme of the book is that things are not as they seem. Rudolf’s story is about recovery and self-healing, Avery’s story is about trust and vulnerability, and Ian’s story is about self acceptance and chosen family 😊 The characters are also genuinely good, kind, supportive people, despite their flaws. In that way, the book almost acts as a “how to not be a terrible person when interacting with queer people” guide lmfao

These are just the main characters truthfully. There are four more who are pretty damn important to the story but I won’t get into that all here. I’d be going on forever haha

I will say, however, that there are trans characters regularly present in it, but I can’t give much detail without spoiling shit 😌

TLDR

it’s about a bunch of early 20s queer kids doing ridiculous gay shit, making dope art, and just absolutely hating college & capitalism. it’s about their journey leaving college and becoming young adults 💖 you’ll love it trust me it’s fucking hilarious

The Bowers Gang: The Guys’ Most Treasured Memories

Warning: Some Disturbing Subject Matter

Belch: Belch’s most treasured memory is of driving Henry home from a house party once when he was drunk; Henry had gotten into a fight in one of the downstairs hallways earlier that night (by that point, way too wasted to be able to defend himself), and Belch had stepped in to give him some much needed help before hauling him out to the Trans-Am. The two drove in whiskey-soaked silence for a few minutes when, all of a sudden, Henry came out with a drunken apology for treating Belch the way he does. He slurred every other word (and straight-up lost his train of thought a couple times), but was eventually able to tell Belch he thought he was “a good guy” in plain English, and even patted his shoulder a few times before passing out. Although Henry acted as if he didn’t remember the conversation the next day (and never changed his behavior towards Belch at all), Belch still remembers it well, and thinks about it often - it makes him smile on an entirely different level than anything else.

Patrick: Patrick Hockstetter’s most treasured memory, hands-down, is of suffocating his younger brother, Avery. Although it’s definitely not the only time Patrick ever felt alive, it’s certainly the most alive Patrick ever felt, and he dreams about the moment often (hence why he tends to laugh so much in his sleep). Though Hockstetter has learned to settle for terrorizing kids and torturing animals over the years (which he considers “limiting himself”) he still craves the high of fully killing a person more than anything else; being that Avery was the first (as well as the last) person Patrick was ever able to satisfy that thirst with, he now remembers Avery’s murder as the single most gratifying moment in his life. Even now, hearing the sound of a baby gurgle makes him smile.

Henry: Henry’s most treasured memory, surprisingly enough, is of the last day he got to spend with his Mom before she left town. This may arguably be considered one of Henry’s last “good” days, and, at times, it seems like he only remembers it to torture himself (thinking about what could’ve been, comparing it to his current life, etc.). Henry’s Mom drove him two counties over to spend the day at the Waldo County Fair, and, even now, Henry can’t remember a time when the air felt more clear. Derry was over 30 miles away - Butch Bowers was equally as far, if not farther. And, because of that, Henry finally felt safe enough to be a kid. His Mom bought him enough tickets to go on every ride twice (even the Speed Demon, which made him throw up the first time around), and stood next to him, smiling quietly, as he raged at all the carnival games (which 9-year-old Bowers insisted were rigged). The night ended with him sprawled out on the living-room floor, eating a bowl of cereal (name-brand, since it was a special occasion) while his Mom cuddled with a sleeping Butch on the couch. Although he never picked up on the inherent “goodbye” that day was supposed to express, Henry remembers it as being the one time his family felt like a real family - he often uses the image of that night to reassure himself that his Mom loved him.

Victor: Victor’s most treasured memory is of something his Grandfather said to him shortly before he died. Although he isn’t close with any of his other extended family, Victor had been writing letters back and forth to his Grandpa since he was seven, and established a very close relationship with him over time. As he began to deteriorate during old age, Victor’s Grandfather began writing him bits of advice he thought Victor could take into adult life (especially since he was the only grown-up who knew the types of people Victor was starting to hang out with). In his last letter to Victor, sent just days before his death, Victor’s Grandpa ended with the line: “A man’s life shrinks or expands in direct proportion to his courage, Vic - make sure you know whether you’re shrinking or expanding.” Victor remembers this sentence not just because the message stuck with him, but because it was the first and only time he ever got the feeling that his Grandpa was disappointed in him. It haunts him to a degree, but he values the advice all the more for it, and thinks about it often.

Genre: magical girl comic

Length: 8 or 9 arcs

Status: outlining

Themes: identity, love, friendship, mental health

Setting: future New York City

Summary: When an angry giant decides to take control of the Mortal Realm and seals six of the Ten Races in the Fair Realm to keep them from interfering, the King of the Fair Folk finds a loophole: if each race imbues an artifact with significance to thei culture with all the powers of their race, they can send those to the Mortal Realm to be wielded by human representatives in the protection of the realm.

One problem: the Pixies weren’t quite as unified in the cause as they claimed, and the choice their artifact in bearer reflects that.

Six children around the world find artifacts that give them magical transformations and powers. Several years later, they meet in a performing arts school in Nww York and team up to protect Humanity from mysterious attackers.

But the pressure to be a hero weighs heavily on Avery, who’s always struggled with malicious and deceitful urges and who’s coping mechanism of ‘put it all in a box and only let it out where nobody can recognize you’ may have serious consequences.

Liv - The hardest worker you’ve ever met, she’s always working on something; might have a bit of a bad habit of overworking. Has beautiful craftsmanship, is great with technology and quite strong. Studying theatre tech. | lesbian, Norwegian, depressed?, workaholic

Anahera - Always has the best advice and is surprisingly sensible for a teenager. A gymnast and silk aerialist. | butch lesbian, Maori, ADHD

Li Na - The living definition of ‘organized chaos’; she somehow always knows where everything is, has a system no one else understands. Is never late to anything. Him protecting you from the gang when they hit on you or in Patrick's case handsy

You two both have feelings for each other although you push them away

Because you don't know if he feels the same

But rest assured he does you have that boy wrapped around your finger

And you find that out in a less than ideal moment

Basically you were out with your boyfriend when Reggie was expecting you over 

When you get over there he is relieved since it was a few hours later than you told him you would be

And when he finds out where you were he gets a little pissed

"Oh so were out with Adam."

"Yeah. Why?"

"I was just worried you know people goin' missin' and all."

"You're right. I'm sorry for worrying you. I should've called saying I would be later."

"I just don't get it."

"What?"

"Why you're with him. He's cheated on you how many times? He doesn't deserve anymore of your tears at this point. All the douche does is break you into smaller pieces every time and I gotta pick em' up. I know you're extra trustin' but why do you wanna be with a guy who does nothin' but hurt you?"

"I...."

"I mean hell what does he even really know about you anyways? Does he know that your absolute favorite thing in the world is a long drive? Does he know that you sleep with your teddy bear after seein' a scary movie? Does he know durin' rainy days all you wanna do is stay huddled up in your blankets? Or what how nothin' makes you happier than a slice of your mama's peach pie? Fuck I mean does he even know what your favorite color is?"

"Well I mean...why do you care?"

"Why do I care? Maybe because I'm your best friend? Or maybe it's because all I want is for you to be happy? Or hell maybe because I'm so damn in love with you and you don't even fucking know it?"

Then he realizes what he said

"You love me?"

"Shit I'm sorry. I probably made everything awkward now."

You say nothing

"I just....I think you deserve the world even it if it ain't with me I want you to be with someone who treats you like the damn Princess you are."

You step closer and kiss him

"I love you back."

"Ya do?"

"Yeah. I have for a while now."

"You have?"

"Yeah. I was just scared you didn't feel the same way."

"Well I definitely do."

You smile and take his hand as he leads you to the couch

And you two snuggle up under a blanket and watch movies while lazily kissing every now and then

Decent list of musicals with canon LGBT rep that’s not only cis white gay boys:

Some obvious ones out of the way that people here are well-acquainted with:

Falsettos (happy lesbian couple supporting characters Dr. Charlotte and Cordelia, as well as heavy focus on Judaism)

Rent (supporting cast includes Collins, a gay Black man and anarchist, Angel, his GNC Latinx partner, Joanne, a Black lesbian lawyer, and Maureen, her performing artist partner who is implied to be bi or a lesbian depending on the version of the show)

Fun Home (protagonist is butch lesbian Alison Bechdel, plot centers on her complicated relationship with her closeted gay dad, and Alison’s college girlfriend, Joan, is very commonly played by women of color)

Some more I’d recommend or at least would like to discuss:

If/Then (plot focuses on two different timelines created by one choice the protagonist makes at the start of the show. There’s Lucas, who is an openly bisexual housing activist and has male and female love interests respectively in the different timelines, David, his sweet boyfriend who is usually Asian-American, Kate, a Black lesbian kindergarten teacher, and Anne, whose relationship with Kate works out in one of the timelines and there’s a really touching song about it. Also they’re played by Anthony Rapp, Jason Tam, LaChanze, and Jenn Colella respectively in the original cast, so how’s that for all-stars?)

The Color Purple (the protagonist is Celie, a dark-skinned Black lesbian living in the 1930s who faces intracommunity misogyny and abuse and comes out of it surrounded by the love of many women in her life, including her bisexual lover, Shug Avery, and is also able to see herself as having inherent value and beauty.)

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (the protagonist is Hedwig, described by the writer as “a gender of one”, who performs in a rock band and tells the audience the story of how she got bottom surgery and left East Berlin to find her soulmate. The show culminates in her accepting that she is a complete person in and of herself.)

Kinky Boots (The co-lead, Lola/Simon, is a Black drag queen who helps in a project to design high-heeled boots strong enough for AMAB people to wear. She also has an arc of reconciling with her father who had previously turned his back on her. I’m not crazy about the way the book is written and I remember there being some transphobic jokes both made at the expense of Lola and by Lola herself, but Cyndi Lauper did write some pretty good bops, so make of it what you will.)

A Chorus Line (one of the dancers, a young gay Puerto Rican man named Paul, gives a major emotional monologue in the latter part of the show about his coming of age.)

Kiss of the Spider Woman (the protagonists are two men, Luis and Valentin, who become lovers in an Argentinian prison. I’ve only listened to the cast recording once and am not all too familiar with it, but I get the impression it’s a classic and Chita Rivera was in it.)

First Lady Suite (one of four of the plots in this show focuses on the love affair between Eleanor Roosevelt and her reporter, Lorena Hickok.)

Bring It On (one of the supporting characters, La Cienega, is an explicitly trans Afro-Latina girl and everyone treats her with respect.)

Some to be on the lookout for:

The Prom (you know people have been talking about this one! It’s about a gaggle of Broadway performers, wanting to be relevant again, hear about a couple of lesbian teenagers, Alyssa and Emma, who got banned from their school prom in Indiana and go out to fight for them. Very sweet fun show, got all the MLM/WLW solidarity you could want. A live recording of the songs can be found on YouTube.)

Head Over Heels (jukebox musical using music by The Go-Gos set in a fairytale world, starring Peppermint, a Black trans performer who competed on RuPaul’s Drag Race and will be officially the the first trans performer to be in an original Broadway cast. Also it's got an interracial lesbian romance, Pamela and Mopsa, and apparently there's also a non-binary character.)

The Civility of Albert Cashier (the protagonist is Albert Cashier, a young trans man who fought in the Civil War and fell in love with one of his fellow soldiers. The young version of him in the show is played by a transmasc actor. There’s no official cast recording yet, but there are demos of the songs up on their website.)

Invisible Thread (Griffin Matthews wrote the show with his real life partner, Matt Gould, as a fictionalized account of his own experience doing volunteer work in Uganda and navigating the unique way he exists there as a gay African-American man and befriending the people there. It’s fallen off the radar for a while now and there aren’t any available recordings of all the songs, but the cast has done a lot of great talks that you can watch on YouTube, some of them from when the show was still going by the title “Witness Uganda”.)

Update (3/11/19):

Interstate (the show has a majority Asian-American cast and creative team and the leads are Dash, a trans man who performs spoken word, and his best friend Adrian, a lesbian songwriter. They are in a band together and the show is about them going on tour and connecting with with their fans. It has performed at the New York Musical Festival at The Acorn Theatre.)

The View UpStairs (this show is based on the real life events of the 1973 arson attack at the UpStairs Lounge, a gay bar in New Orleans. The protagonist is our framing device, a young gay Black fashion designer from the current day named Wes who’s having a rough time with his anxiety and finds himself transported to the UpStairs Lounge, connecting with his community’s history. The cast album is available on Amazon and iTunes.)

Lizzie (based off the 1892 murders of Abby and Andrew Borden, and the trial of Lizzie Borden, running off of the theory that Lizzie and her neighbor, Alice, were in love. You can find it on Amazon, Spotify, and YouTube. There’s a lot of loud noises- it’s a rock musical)

Volleygirls (it’s about what you’d think it would be about, high school girls playing volleyball. There is a Latina lesbian named Marisol who sings an absolutely adorable song about liking girls, which you’ve probably heard a few different people cover like Adrienne Warren and Lilli Cooper. My favorite is Monica Raymund, who I think is the original actress. As far as I can tell, the show has never been staged or recorded for an album, but you can watch them perform all the songs at 54 Below on YouTube.)

Across The Universe (pretty well-known jukebox musical of The Beatles directed by Julie Taymor set in the cultural landscape of America and Britain during the Vietnam war. Prudence is a Vietnamese-American lesbian who is part of the main group of friends. I do wish she had more story, but she sings an absolutely beautiful and tender version of I Wanna Hold Your Hand.)

So, as a cis person, I just want to say that changing your name whether it be legally or not, is the most liberating thing I’ve ever done for myself. Like in changing my name I got to fully become true myself.
