hell yea it’s Hakuji time !! im also taking this opportunity for a short reprieve from *waves at Douma* this AU’s awfulness

Kyoujurou meets Hakuji at Kimetsu High. neither of them are students there, mind you, Kyoujurou is drinking coffee in the teacher’s lounge before going home, and Hakuji comes in to ask where he can put up the flyers advertising the dojo he works at

they talk a little as Kyoujurou guides him through the hallways. Hakuji’s dojo doesn’t have many students, especially in the beginners’ classes, and he’s hoping to recruit some newcomers. first few lessons are free, by the way

he enthusiastically answers all of Kyoujurou’s questions about soryuu, about martial arts, and isn’t it kind of dangerous ? Kyoujurou isn’t really comfortable with the idea of violence, it turns out, not even controlled. but Hakuji has the dojo’s honor to defend here, and he will Not stand for this kind of skewed image of martial arts

people come to the dojo for a variety of reasons, he says. some just want to do some sport. some are looking to test new horizons, find their limits and surpass them

some want to learn to defend themselves, just in case, or maybe to grow beyond a past experience where they felt powerless against someone stronger than them

some are trying to grow into a better person, to turn their anger and violence into something controlled, something with discipline and respect for their opponent, where they don’t risk hurting someone neither deserving of hurt or who signed up in full consciousness of the risks

which type are you ? Kyoujurou asks. Hakuji just smiles

he’s the one teaching the beginners’ classes, he explains after he’s done hanging up the flyers. he hands one to Kyoujurou, in case he wants to change his mind about soryuu, or just to learn something new

it takes some time for Kyoujurou to really process the encounter. Hakuji’s enthusiasm and passion was admirable, and reminds him of his own passion for history. and he seemed like a kind person

on the other hand, whenever Kyoujurou thinks of hitting someone, his mind flashes back to that fateful day he found Senjurou at home (the old one, where Father probably still lives in the company of his precious bottles) with a bloodied nose, to the awful, awful fear that maybe it wasn’t the first time, or maybe it would happen again, and to the overwhelming anger he felt at his father

if Senjurou hadn’t been here, in need of care, in need of protection and of being taken away, Kyoujurou might have killed their father. he knows this, and fears this knowledge

and anyway, he doesn’t have time or money to spare for this kind of hobby, and Senjurou would feel lonely without him at home probably

but a few weeks later, Kyoujurou has finally (finally !) paid off the last of his loans, and Senjurou found himself a part-time job and Kyoujurou is the lonely one now

and the thought keeps coming back, that it could be a good outlet for the stress he feels from all his work, that he could learn to defend himself, defend Senjurou, just in case. it would be good for him to do some sport again, too. for his health. and Hakuji seemed nice, Kyoujurou really liked talking to him

and well. the first few lessons are free, right ?
