so happy to hear you also hate the romance in that book it Always felt so incredibly slimy even when i read it as a kid. i can understand the necessary appeal of romance in YA but i always felt like katniss' character was held back by her interactions with bread boy, she's a much more interesting study when put against other characters (her relationship with her family is... man. you also see her interact with other winners later on so I'm curious to hear your thoughts on it).

that being said, I seriously haven't read these books in ages lol. any character/interaction/scene that stuck out to you? usually at this point people ask about rue, but I'm all ears for anything and everything.

for as much as I'm a #peeniss hater, this line was one of the best lines in the book for me:

the rest of the story did not successfully sell me on this being a worthy romance. but this line right here? that hits. it makes perfect sense why she would commit double suicide with him, even if I don't believe it when the story says she loves him. regardless of what their relationship is, he is a person she knows. and it would be horrifying if she had to live the rest of her life knowing that the only reason she stayed alive is because he died for her and she couldn't stop him. it doesn't matter who she is, or whether she even likes him. he is a kid she knows from her hometown and if they both live, they are going to have to deal with survivor's guilt forever. she doesn't want him to deal with that pain either.

the survivor's guilt would mean one of them would always be stuck in this moment. better to die and bring that moment to a close rather than let it stay an open wound for the rest of their lives, whichever one lives.

He wouldn’t even try to cover his jealousy up when being near the person

Just kiss will be pretty much enough to reassure him

“I wasn’t jealous. They were flirting with you! It was enough of a reason for me to act that way!”

Finnick Odair

Even though he doesn’t really have a reason to be jealous he indeed does get slightly at times

Finnick is the most famous guy in whole Capitol, but that doesn’t mean that jealousy can’t get the best of him

Just like Peeta he’d try to act polite

Really, he tries not to be jealous, but he can’t help it

Finnick, feels kinda dumb for being jealous ‘cause he trusts you

He isn’t one to really show it

He’s constantly just bottling it up inside of him

Finnick is prepared for being teased about it later by you, but he doesn’t really mind

Walks up to you and the person and puts his hand on your waist

If the person still wouldn’t get the hint he’d kiss your cheek and call you “love” or “sweetheart”

His sassy side kicks in while talking woth the person

Finnick would let you tease him about it later and he’d probably laugh it off

“Yeah, okay *chuckles* I get your point”

Cato Hadley

Definetly the hard stare or some glances

Cato is the type of a person “punch first, ask second”

He isn’t really insecure, but it does bother him when other people are hitting on you

But if the person isn’t bothering you, he wouldn’t pick a fight with them

He’s more bitter and sassy towards the person

Cato doesn’t really shy away from PDA

So he’s not afraid to wrap his strong arms around you protectively or kiss you

He wants the person to get the hint

If the person is your friend he’d be much calmer ‘cause he doesn’t want to ruin yours and their friendship

Cato can and will flex just to prove the person that they ain’t good enough for you

If the person would dare to touch you in uncomfortable way, Cato would be quick to give them piece of their mind

He ain’t losing you to some jerk from a bar

Extremely affectionate with you during the interigation with the person

Clove Kentwell

Pretty much like Cate “punch first, ask second”

Clove definetly has some jealousy issues

She very quickly loses her cool when someone starts flirting with you

If you weren’t there, she’d most definetly punch the person

Agressively conforts them

She’s indeed intimidating when she wants to be so the person would probably back off

But if not, things could escalate to the point where she throws hands

You’re pretty much the only person who can calm her down at that point

Death stares

Clove isn’t really into PDA, but at that point she would put her arm around your shoulders or rest her hand on your waist

She doesn’t even hide her jealousy

Will deny her jealousy later at all cost

Clove will talk absolute shit about the person after they leave (unless it’s your friend)

Is very clingy afterwards

If it’s your friend, she’ll get slightly bitter with them, but would calm down

After all, she doesn’t wanna ruin your and the person’s friendship

She’ll start playing with her knifes next to you only to intimidate the person silently

♫↬ He's a switch, I don't think he has a preference ♫↬ Because of his trauma with sexual situations, he always wants to make sure he has your consent before he does literally anything. He's a very gentle guy. that being said, he doesn't really get jealous, because at the end of the day, he knows whos bed you'll end up in at the end of the night. ♫↬ he loves to tease. he's amazing with his tongue (i mean have you SEEN the water scene in catching fire??) and even better with his dick. he knows how to hit every spot that makes you scream ♫↬ he's got a praise kink. call him a goodboy and he is gone ♫↬ he's really sweet when it comes to aftercare. He's whisper sweet nothings into your ear while he cleans you up and then he'll cuddle you to sleep. there is not a singular time he has ever forgotten aftercare because of some sexual trauma from the capitol.

Nothing like my usual content, but I recently watched hunger games again so now you get to suffer the consequences.

(apologies for spelling I wrote this when I should have been sleeping)

Effie from hunger games is funny. Def my fav character.

She's so disconnected from reality that she yells at Katniss for putting a knife in a mohagony table and not the fact that Katness nearly stabbed Haymitch. She does it again when she mentions that the careers dont get dessert, not acknowledging the fact that they literally train for the hunger games

That whole part of her personality shows the effect that the hunger games has on the Capitol population

She's grown up watching the hunger games. She is desensitized to all the killings and violence that she comments on the damn table and not how haymich nearly lost a hand

She's a really good foil to the other 3 ‘main characters’ because she's the only one from the capitol, and she's the only one who is truly delusional about the games (at least in the first movie)

She's especially good foil for Haymich as hes the one who has been through the games and is so traumatized that he drinks his problems away. Effie’s bubbly enthusiasm that is borderline insistent that everything ok hits a wall when next to Haymich’s depressing ‘we r all gonna die’ attitude.

𓆩♡𓆪 SUMMARY - Peeta and Katniss weren’t the first to fall in love after the games. That title went to you and Finnick, your mentor after you were Reaped at the age of fifteen two years after Finnick. After being dragged back into the Games with the Quarter Quell, you both are determined to stop it, no matter what- especially if one of you would gladly sacrifice themselves for the other.

𓆩♡𓆪 STORY WARNINGS - a little more angsty than usual || you almost die again (you don't though!) || Finnick wants to kill Peeta a little || jabberjays are assholes || game master point of views || Finnick really does love you omg ||

You laid between Finnick’s legs on the beach, eyes closed as he slowly took your hair, braiding small sections. You used to practice on him when you were younger, it was your stress relief, but you slowly switched places when he cut his hair and you taught him how to braid for ropes.

You stared at the tsunami-like wave that traveled through one part of the arena, hand softly rubbing at his calf. You sat up when you heard yelling, three forms running out of the forest a couple yards away, Katniss standing up as Finnick grabbed his trident before you heard that voice that always went shrill when you heard them scream.

“Johanna?” You mumble, smiling when you see her signature ax. “Johanna!”

“Y/N!” She yells out, running towards you even though you refused to touch her. “We were deep in the jungle where I thought we’d be safe,” she says, scoffing. “Then the rain started. I thought it was water, it turned out to be blood.”

You look over at Beetee who scooped water over himself to wash it off. She continues telling Finnick whatever she was saying as Wiress says ‘tick tock’ over and over again. You pause, looking around at the arena. Twelve sections and a tree that gets hit by lightning twice a day. You look at her, gasping. “Wiress, you’re a genius!”

Even then, though, after Gloss and Cashmere got to the cornucopia, all hell broke loose. Gloss and Cashmere distracted Katniss and Johanna while you fought to keep the cornucopia yours. When the cornucopia started spinning, though, it was horrible.

You were on the edge, struggling to keep hold of the rocks as Finnick attempted to reach down for you. “Y/N! Y/N, grab my hand, please!”

What was the point? If you fell, you would take him along with you, even accidentally. “I can’t. Finnick, I can’t!”

He shook his head. “Yes! Yes you can, Y/N, grab my hand!”

You slowly let go of the rocks, screaming out as the island starts to go the other way and you’re thrown into the water. Finnick gasps, throwing his trident to the side. “Y/N! Y/N!” He’s about to jump in before Peeta pulls him back.

“Finnick, don’t!”

“Move! Peeta move, got dammit, move!” He yells, trying to shove him off.

“If you go in there, you’ll die!” Peeta attempted to reason, but Finnick didn’t care, not when you were in there. “Finnick!”

Finnick grabbed his wrists, grabbing his trident to press against Peeta’s throat. “Get your fucking hands off of me.”

Peeta squeezed his eyes shut, sighing as he stepped back before Finnick dived into the water. He was the strongest swimmer out of any of them, if anyone could get to you, it’d be him. He searched frantically, finally locating your body drifting away from the cornucopia before swimming over. He dragged you behind him, swimming back toward the island where the currents began to still. Climbing up, he forced your body onto the rocks.

“Peeta! Katniss! Johanna!” He yelled out their names, trying to get help as he got you onto the platform. He panted, quickly pushing your wet hair out of your face before pressing his ear to your chest. “No. No, Y/N! Y/N, wake up! Get up!”

He starts chest compressions, grunting as he forces all his weight onto you, one two, before leaning down and pressing his lips to yours, breathing into your mouth as he groans. “No! No, You’re not fucking- no! You said you wouldn’t leave me, Y/N, get up!”

He continues compressions, groaning as you stay still, eyes closed and lips turning a slight blue. He hears footsteps, his hand quickly goes to his trident before Peeta comes running. “Finnick, I-”

“Shut up!” Finnick says, glaring at the other male. “You better shut the fuck up, Mellark. If she’s fucking dead, you better believe it’s you next and the rest of the bastards in this game!”

His hands continue compression, pausing to push air into your mouth as he holds your cheek, tears brimming his eyes. You can’t leave him, you promised. He promised, he promised he’d keep you safe and he failed. “Y/N, please,” he whispers, inhaling shakily as he pressed his forehead to yours. “Don’t leave me. Come on please.”

He was begging as he continued compressions, cursing loudly as he stared at your stilled body. “Wake up! Wake up, Y/N, please wake up! I swear to fucking god, wake up!”

When the cannon went off, he froze. His mouth drops, the tears he held back finally falling down his cheeks as he stared at you. “No.”

Peeta inhaled shakily. “Finnick-”

Finnick’s hands pressed into your chest as he stood, grabbing his trident as he glared at Peeta. “I’m going to kill you!”

It was when you started coughing did Finnick quickly turn around, watching as you gagged on water before turning to your side. He fell to his knees, quickly slapping his hand against your back as you gagged loudly, retching. “Oh darling, you’re okay. You’re okay, let it all out.”

He holds back your hair as you retch a few more times, hand rubbing up and down your back as you hold his thigh. You panted as he finally pulled you up, quickly examining your face as you stared at his blood shot eyes. “Finnick? What’s wrong?”

He laughs, stroking your cheek as he shakes his head. “Nothing, darling. Nothing, nothing my love,” he stroked your hair back as he kissed you, a loud shriek making him laugh as he pulled back. “What’s wrong?”

“Finnick, I almost threw up!”

“And? You didn’t,” he whispers, brushing his nose against yours. “I thought I lost you, darling.”

You inhaled shakily, shaking your head in response. “You’ll never lose me, Finnick.”

He pulled you in for another kiss, groaning as he pulled you into his lap. You gasped as his hand pulled your mouth, farther into his own as his tongue pushed into your mouth, his other hand rubbing down your back as you tugged his head back by his golden hair.

“G-Guys?” Peeta squeaked, but you didn’t care, neither of you cared enough.

Your hips rut into his as another cannon goes off, a loud moan falling from his lips before you pull away. Your lips were swollen as you kissed his ear, his hand pulling you closer to him.

He holds you close, stroking your head as he sobbed into your shoulder, your mouth pressing kisses into his hair as you look up at Peeta, mouthing ‘thank you’ to him. He inhaled, nodding as he stood and jogged away.

Your hands stroke his hair, kisses being pressed to every curl and whisp of his golden locks as he pulls you as close as he possibly could. “I thought I lost you,” he whispers, sniffling. “I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you.” He pressed a kiss to your stomach before you made him look up at you, smiling down at him.

“Finnick, I’m not going anywhere.”

He inhaled, leaning into your touch as you wiped his eyes. “I love you, Y/N Odair.”

You lean down, kissing his lips again. “I love you, Finnick Odair. From now until the end of time.”

He smiles, head resting on your chest. “And when we meet in our next lifetime.”

Finnick refused to leave you until you made him go into the forest with Katniss. You would be fine with Johanna and Peeta.

When they got in there, though, he heard you. He heard you screaming, from the opposite side of where he had just come from. It didn’t click at first, but you screamed, you screamed his name so loud and wailed, “Finnick! Finnick, help me! Finnick!”

Katniss shakes her head. “Finnick, no. Finnick, stop!”

“Y/N. Y/N! Y/N, where are you?!” He had just lost you, even for a mere few minutes, he was not going to lose you again. You screamed even louder, wailing. 

“Finnick. Finnick! Finnick, help!”

“Y/N. Y/N!”

She goes around him, quickly getting his attention. “Finnick! Finnick, it’s not her! It’s not Y/N, it’s just a jabberjay.”

“How do you think they got that sound?” Finnick asked, eyes burning. “Jabberjays copy.”

A male voice makes Katniss breathe a name, but all Finnick was focused on was you. The birds flew down on them, your voice screaming his name over and over again. Finnick! Finnick help me, why won’t you help me?!

You, on the other hand, heard him. You heard him screaming your name, and you ran into the forest until you heard a new voice, one you could never forget. “Y/N, help me! Help me, they’re hurting me! Help, help me!”

No. No it wasn’t possible, he was dead. He was dead, right?

“Help me! Y/N, please, it hurts! It hurts!”

But maybe it was possible. This was the games after all. “Code? Code! Code, where are you?! Code, baby, where are you?!”

“Code… Code, where have I heard that name before?” Claudius whispers, looking through his papers like he might find something.

“Ah! Code was the alliance that our Princess of Panem had with a young boy from District 3,” Caesar explains as you run through the woods, screaming out for him. “He was murdered by the Career Tributes when she had gone fishing, and screamed out for her help. Afterwards, Y/N killed the eight Career Tributes when the dam exploded and drowned them after capturing them in a skillfully tied net.”

Claudius laughs. “Oh, what a smart girl our princess is!”

“While on her Victory Tour, she praised Code to his family and apologized that she couldn’t save him,” Caesar sniffled dramatically. “Our poor princess did try, for days in fact. She tried to heal him with different herbs and such that she found, but nothing worked,” he stared into the camera. “To Code’s family, I hope you see how much your son impacted our Princess,” he raised his hand to his heart. “And in turn, us.”

The screaming only got louder as you neared Finnick and Katniss, Peeta and Johanna behind you. You saw the birds, jabberjays. All hope that Code was alive dropped in an instant, but as you ran forward, you were blocked by the glass. Finnick and Katniss banged on the force field, their screams mute as you pressed your hands to Finnick’s through the clear area. “Finnick! Finnick, I’m here! I’m here, it’s okay!”

You watched him crumble to the ground, his eyes staring into yours as you banged on the glass. “Stop! Stop this, please!” You screamed out, sobbing as he covers his ears, screaming at all the cameras that focused in on both of you. “Stop this! Stop! What do you want from us, stop!” You wailed, hands slamming into the force field as you pressed your head against Finnick’s. You couldn’t hear him, but you saw his face, you saw how much he was in pain, pain you couldn’t do anything about. “Finnick. Finnick, please! Please, please look at me!”

His eyes squeezed shut as he screamed, trying to block out all the noise, the wailing and sounds of your screams and sobs begging for him to help you even though you were right in front of him. As much as it hurt him physically, it hurt him more mentally, your screaming and the thought of him being unable to help you making him shut down.

You sobbed against the force field until the hour was up, quickly crawling to Finnick’s body as he slowly rocked back and forth. “Finnick. Finnick? Finnick, darling, Finnick.”

He gasps as he looked up at you, red eyes with dark rings underneath making your stomach twist. “Hey, darling,” he fakes a grin as you try to reach for him, his hand quickly blocking you. “I’m okay. I’m okay.”

“Finnick, no, please don’t,” you whisper, eyes filling with tears. He had never rejected touch from you, even when you both fought, and this was a new kind of pain. “Don’t push me away. Please, please don’t push me away.”

“Y/N, I can’t, I can’t,” he whispers, clutching the sides of his head as he groans. “I can’t lose you, I can’t.”

You shook your head. “You won’t. You won’t, Finnick, I’m right here.”

Your hands finally cup his face as Johanna starts to scream at the sky just like you did. “You know, you can’t put everybody in here!” She screams, her ax bouncing along with her body movements as Katniss stares up at her. “What? They can’t hurt me,” she says, clutching her ax. “There’s no one left that I love.”

You exhaled shakily as you pulled Finnick into your neck, stroking his hair. If you could, you would be screaming just like Johanna. The only problem was that you did have people you loved, and even if it was few, they were still people you loved and cared for. Never would you put them in harm's way to scream out words that would do nothing.

Finnick exhaled against your skin, pulling you close as you stroked his hair, kissing at his head. “Don’t go, Y/N. Please.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Finnick. Never.”

In the scene where Thresh lets Katniss go in the first Hunger Games, there is a line from the book that I really wish the movies had included and that's this line of Katniss's: "Yes. I killed him. And buried her in flowers," I say. "And I sang her to sleep." It's this line that disarms Thresh and he questions what she means, prompting Katniss to have to amend the statement and say, "I sang to her until she died." But it's the way that Katniss words it at first that I think is what really makes Thresh stop. She's not only saying that they were allies, that she paid her respects to Rue by burying her, but that she acknowledged how young Rue was, how innocent, how gentle, and that she knew her well enough to know that she loves music. She acknowledged all of this by singing to her. This line is not only adds to why Thresh lets Katniss go but also how trauma plays a role in the story itself, a part of The Hunger Games that I think makes it unique to other YA novels. Not only does this phrasing show Katniss caring for Rue, it is simultaneously showing just how in denial Katniss is and just how traumatizing the event was. It shows how much Rue reminded her of Prim, how closely the two are linked in her mind, and how the trauma of losing Rue echos her fear of losing Prim. Also, importantly, it shows the mental blockades Katniss has had to put up to keep herself going. She hasn't let it hit her that Rue is really really gone. She broke down right after it happened, but then she immediately had to go back into survival mode and then into "find and protect Peeta" mode. It's Clove taunting her with what happened to Rue and then Thresh pushing for an explanation that makes Katniss confront it, and even then she can't bring herself to actually say Rue died. She admits that she killed Marvel and that Rue is gone, but she can only say that she "sang Rue to sleep." But she is pushed to amend the statement and say that she sang to her until she died, sending her into panic beyond what she had been feeling when threatened by Clove and confronted by Thresh. She is experiencing new moments of trauma on top of reliving it, all of it compounding on top of itself. It's clear that Suzanne Collins took great care in actually looking at, exploring, and addressing what forms trauma might take and in what ways it might appear. Fic takes place when Katniss has gone almost 6 months without a rut, which is the longest dry spell she’s had since the Revolution. And so when Peeta’s heat comes, it hits him HARD. And Katniss struggles to take care of him. He’s needy and desperate and out of his goddamn mind and she does every thing she can think of to try and help him & she’s insecure about the fact that she doesn’t seem to be enough to satiate him & between all his horny-out-of-his-mind spells Peeta unknowingly does tiny little things that lets Katniss know just how loved & appreciated she is & it’s just soft & fluffy & incredibly hot bc OMG alpha female representation LFG

Okay last thought about the hunger games (until I rewatch the movies sorry not sorry). There’s so much fucking death in them. And that may sound stupid since it’s a series that starts with kids fighting to the death for entertainment and ends with all out revolution, but it seriously does not shy away from death in all its facets. Major character death, gruesome death, mass death, child death, senseless death. It’s really fucking rough.

When I first read it as a kid I had never experienced anything like that in media. I was a decently sheltered kid but of course I had seen and read things where death had happened. But there’s really no comparison with say, H*rry P*tter (the one other series I had read at the time that has major character death), where characters peacefully fall to the ground after being hit by a flash of light, when Collins is telling us about Finnick being decapitated or Prim turning into a human torch (verbatim out of the text).

Mockingjay in particular is filled with death even though it’s the only book that doesn’t have a hunger games happen in it. And it’s the sheer magnitude of it that left me literally bereft at the end. I hesitate to say the book has a happy ending, but it at least ends peacefully for many of our main characters and of course society as we know that for now things are getting better (although plutarch’s pessimistic outlook on societal reform could be an essay in itself). But for a series that technically ends well, the immeasurable grief I felt was so strong I just stared at the wall for a long time after.

Of course I remembered Prim’s death, and Finnick’s, but I was just overwhelmed by the others. Katniss losing her whole squad, mourning Boggs, Peeta accidentally killing Mitchell, Messalla’s quick and gruesome death, the woman Katniss kills in her apartment, the little girl in the yellow coat, Thom collecting bodies in 12 for a mass grave, Katniss learning that Madge was killed, hearing that every stylist from the Quell was killed, that every remaining victor was executed off screen, that Katniss’s prep team is the only one left… it’s so much that you start to feel like Katniss herself being buried under the weight of named character bodies.

And to me it all goes back to the core of this series, which is humanity. It’s about being human. The humanity of Katniss and her family, her friends. Even those who are supposed to be against her like Darius the peacekeeper who is still humanized to an intense degree and who we tragically see killed later. Like Enobaria, a career from district two who literally sharpened her teeth in order to rip people’s throats out more effectively but who Katniss still secured immunity for. The humanity of those from the capitol who she starts out hating (Effie, the preps, cinna) and ends up loving. The humanity of other tributes, victors, districts, allies and enemies. That’s why I think food is so important in the books. Katniss describes every single thing she eats for every single meal throughout the whole series. That’s such an odd thing for a book to do but it fits so well because hunger and food are such important parts of our lives. They are so human. And the loss of humanity is so greatly felt.

My Thoughts on Guardians of the Galaxy 3

(Spoiler free until the cut)

*Rocket’s backstory is the standout part of this movie. Absolutely beautifully and exquisitely done. I cried, and I rarely cry at movies. The voice acting, the CGI of Rocket and his friends, the writing, it was all incredible!

*There were some fun moments between the team! This is definitely Rocket’s movie, but Nebula, Drax, and Mantis have some great scenes. Peter and Gamora take a backseat in terms of screen time.

*Adam Warlock was definitely underused, I kept forgetting he was in this movie. I wish he had more interaction with the Guardians before the very end of the film.

*Cosmo 13/10, she’s a very good girl!

Now for spoilers!

*I was honestly disappointed at the ending. Peter going back to Earth, especially without the other Guardians, didn’t make a lot of sense to me. And him going back to his grandfather was a strange choice. I get that he was Peter’s only remaining earth relative, but we don’t know anything about him outside of one scene in the first movie. I always hate when stories split up the found family for no good reason. The Guardians ARE Peter’s family, blood relation or not. And besides, we JUST found out that Pete and Mantis are siblings, so he has other biological relatives! If they were going to have Peter go back to his grandfather, I would have liked them to visit Meredith’s grave together. I think that would have been more impactful, emotionally.

*I feel like they didn’t really know what to do with Gamora in this movie. No offense to Zoe Saldana, I love her and her portrayal of Gamora. (She’s literally my favorite Guardian!) But I think it would have been better if the alternate Gamora wasn’t in this movie, and they focused more on the team healing from losing her in Infinity War. (And Gamora could still make an appearance in flashbacks or something, kind of like Yondu appearing to Kraglin.)

*As a huge Starmora shipper, I was disappointed that they ended that storyline. I was hoping for a Katniss x Peeta type thing, where they fall in love all over again after one of them loses their memories. However, I’m also glad that they didn’t force them getting back together or one of them falling in love with someone else.

*I really thought Lyla, Floor, and Teefs were going to be able to escape with Rocket. I think writing them off was effective and certainly an emotional gut punch. But I was expecting them to have some kind of falling out after leaving together, and then Rocket finds the others years later and they all reconcile and live on Knowhere together. (Maybe I need to write an AU fanfiction where that does happen, haha!)

*On a similar note, the final scene between Rocket and Lyla was beautiful. However, I wish they would have committed to either killing the Guardians or not. The end of that scene where Lyla told him “not yet” felt like a fake out, and other characters had moments like that too. (Drax and Mantis when they were getting Rocket’s file, Peter almost dying in space…) I get doing a dramatic scene and leaving the audience in suspense of the character is going to survive or not. But Rocket’s should have been the only one, in my opinion, and the others felt a little cheap.

*The music didn’t hit the same as the other Guardians movies! The first two soundtracks are iconic, I literally have the CDs for both of them. But this one didn’t really have any stand out song choices, in my opinion. Save for Dog Days at the very end, which was my personal favorite.

Tbh I don't know exactly how I feel about the hijacking storyline. One hand, it was something that hit Katniss really hard because not only did she love Peeta, but she was in the arena with him. They agreed to separate before the explosion and she feels guilty for it because her direct choices caused him to suffer. I know this also happened when District 12 got bombed, but Peeta was physically in the arena with her and I think that has its own effect.

The hijacking storyline also puts immediate and constant danger onto one of the people Katniss loves most and she can clearly see the effect it had on him even when they were apart. Also, Peeta is one of the few characters being directly threatened by the Capitol as he was held hostage by them and tortured. Whilst other characters like Katniss' mum, Prim and Gale were under constant threats from the Capitol, especially Gale since he was a soldier, they weren't directly and physically with the Capitol like Peeta was. It has a different type of effect on Katniss, knowing the reason he is being tortured and not her is because District 13 saved her and not him as well as knowing that there is nothing she herself can do to save him.

I think the effect the hijacking had on Katniss' story in MJ was good, but I don't know if I believe it satisfied Peeta's arc. The hijacking made him forget who Katniss really was, replacing his memories of her with corrupted ones, hence the "real or not real". He had to relearn everything about Katniss and fall in love with her all over again. He lost everything about his feelings and memories of since they were children and it also destroyed everything they built in THG and CF, which imo doesn't satisfy his arc but feels like it was destroyed and rebuilt. I'm not saying that that is a bad thing, but it does ruin his initial arc.

That's why I followed you initially, I just gasped at your bio and thought "there's more people like me on here!" and pressed follow!

I too was that insufferable 14 year old. I could not get away with wearing any form of braided hairstyle without being teased that I was trying to be Katniss (I probably was half the time haha). My friends, family, school teachers, everyone knew I was obsessed with the Hunger Games.

It fizzled out gradually for me too. I think it was just the natural progression with the films coming to an end etc etc. It never left though, obviously.

I re read the books before reading the prequel. I'm so with you on these books being a whole different experience now that we're closer to Finnick's age than Katniss and Peeta's. 16 seemed so so old to me, so imagine what i thought of characters like Finnick and Johanna. I can't even comprehend having gone through something like they did at my age now, let alone at 16.

I think back then, the main draw for me was definitely Katniss and Peeta's relationship. It still is one of my favourite things about the books, but after rereading them and the prequel, I agree that there is so much we missed, just by simply being too young to fully comprehend it. I find that I now have a larger interest in the political scope of everything and just the world in general (like...how tf did they rebuild the whole country after mockingay? need to discuss!!)

Hi hello! I read this as soon as it came in this morning, and wanted to respond, but wanted to be sure to give it the enthusiastic and lengthy response it deserved, that my brain could not formulate at 4 am when I read it.

I am so glad others feel the same. I remember in the early days, I was on Tumblr ( my main blog has existed since 2012 lol), but not active in fandom spaces. I was a fanfic writer. And on Facebook I was REALLY active in fandom and was literally participating in like..Hunger Games RP in Facebook comments. Wild. I was so into it.

Whats really settled with me, as a 25 year old woman, is like..the way mentors had to feel. My baby brother is 17 years old. He is a baby to me. He is just a child to me. I cannot imagine being Johanna or Finnick or Annie, mentoring at my age (or younger, actually), to kids my brothers age. Teenagers feel like Kids and I feel such an immense sisterly, guiding, mentor-ly role to them. Even college kids, I've been a mentor for pre-medicine students in my sorority for years, and those 18 year olds vs me, at 25? massive difference. I cannot imagine watching someone my little brother's age fight to the death. I cannot imagine someone my baby cousin's age, who is 12, fighting someone my brother's age. I cannot imagine watching someone my brother's age lead a war, lead a rebellion, and go through the things Katniss does. I can only imagine the horrors the past Victors learned to feel, and the emotions attached to their tributes every year.

Again, Katniss and Peeta, with the (albeit fake) baby. 17 with a child? I remember being 16 years old, my best friend in the world had a baby. I was there. I remember watching her become a mother far too young, and I have watched ever since the way she has struggled and what it did to her mental health. Two 16/17 year old kids, having a baby, is a horror that should be addressed beyond what I at 16 thought it was. I was so team yes let there be a baby! as a child. But now? Now I see the horror of that. I Have delivered the babies of girls that age. I have held their hands as they are alone in the world. I'm going into a field specifically to help girls and women, in this position especially.

I think to that letter Plutarch wrote Katniss, where he literally says he would put her all through it again for the same outcome.

The youth of these tributes is haunting. If there were capitol doctors around they would be pediatricians. Let that sink in. The things these Victors would need is a pediatrician (also a psychiatrist and a surgeon probably).

so a lot of this is like, being put together as i go obviously so more will come up as it gets fleshed out! but i said this near the beginning and ill repeat it: there arent enough drdi characters to replace the hunger games ones, so its technically a crossover. so president snow is still the main bad guy (hannah joked that president snow could be replaced by the truck and im still laughing about that) so im gonna put that out there! maybe katniss still exists lol but didnt get reaped. i did this in my pjo au that only exists in my head too but that one isnt gonna get fleshed out any time soon bc im not super into it rn.

anyway, just wanted to say that lol. one big thing would the romance wouldnt be the focus of the trio's whole thing of course. i think theres like... rumors in the capitol of like oooh which once is dating ranboo whats going on there ;) but beyond that, its like, the bond between tommy and tubbo that has a big focus and how they like ✨united to save ranboo✨ and of course the trio's bond too. ranboo is the damsel in distress sweetheart kind of role in the eyes of viewers. ranboo and tommy would also be far more aware of the situation when compared to peeta with katniss. like they know how much rides on them filling the roles theyve been put into. and they do love each other and have that bond but it isn't the exact same as what the people want to see from them, and its hard to act when they wish they could just like... be.

theres also no one who fills the prim role. so thats definitely a change. the final bombing and stuff would still go how it does in mockingjay, and it would still be horrific, but theres no one to get caught in it. i could see maybe like, ranboo being there and tubbo thinks theyre dead, but i dont wanna kill them... still working on that piece. i think like, while the situation follows that of the books, theres just differences in the way the key points are hit i suppose. because its not a 1:1 au obviously... theres a lot to play with :]

also three winners sure has an effect on things. it shows a bond between districts that really has a big effect, especially with 3 and 8 both already being more rebellious AND side by side geographically. they stand together before the actual rebellions even begin

Book Recs Wanted!! (where the protagonist chooses family over the love interest)

Okay so I’ve had these thoughts swirling around in my head recently and I’m hoping the collective Tumblr consciousness will be able to help me find what I’m looking for (if it even exists).

So I read this book a couple months ago where the main character goes to the underworld on behalf of her brother, spends the whole book missing her family and trying to get back to them, eventually gets back, spends 2 years with her family, and then leaves again to go back to the underworld for the rest of her life. And like that ending really bothered me because of that decision, of choosing her new love that she knew for 3 months over her family.

And I also just finished rereading the hunger games series and I was thinking about how I really enjoy and relate to Katniss, especially because of her relationship with Prim, because it reminds me of me and my sister, and I was thinking about how she does everything in those books for Prim, and if she had a choice between Gale or Peeta or Prim, she would pick Prim 100% of the time. And that’s why I like her so much.

And maybe it’s just cause I’m ace and have never been in love, or because I’m really close with my family, but like…I just don’t get it when characters choose someone they’ve known for like a month at the expense of ever seeing their beloved family again! I couldn’t even imagine making that decision - I would pick my family every time.

But this type of decision is underrepresented in literature - in fact, I’m not sure if I can think of an example that fits it. So I am looking to see if anyone knows of any books where the protagonist is given a choice between a new love interest and their family, and they choose their family. (And their family doesn’t have to be biological - found family is good too! I’m just looking for something where familial bonds are more important than romantic bonds). I don’t know if books like this even exist, but I hope they do, so hit me up with your recs!

I just want to say, after seeing some of it come across my dash again, because after all, people reblog and reblog and reblog... I feel that guilt-tripping readers is ineffective at best and gets them hostile at worst. I know that this is the time that we all scream into the void at the encroaching dark and holy shit the world's messed up and in the Information Age we all get to know a lot more than our ancestors did, but with apologies to the mutual I saw reblogging things he cares about (and I reblog the same subject matter from them and others), just... the way one post was worded just got me thinking on a long philosophical track. Some of us are doing what we can in light of the situation, which is not much, because we are not in power. All we have is our personal vote / no vote / I trusted you and you let me down lists in our heads. Some of us have written congresscritters whom we know aren't listening. Some who can give money and are sure they are giving to organisations that won't be intercepted and the money gobbled up have been giving. Some are afraid that's going to happen and are living paycheck to paycheck so all we have is our griping. (And some of us have disabilities physical, psychiatric and transportational that keep us from attending protests). So some of us might be doing what we can, but it's not enough and can't be. Anyway, the philosophical train of thought that my brain got onto:

I don't think it actually does much to tell people "What you're doing now is what you would have done during the Holocaust!" or "What you're doing now is what you'd be doing during slavery!" - this is used as a guilt trip, or perhaps a mirror to hold up to people who like to pretend that they are more heroic than they are. What about those of us who do not think we are particularly good? A friend of mine and I got to talking once about old books and how some people want to cancel or censor old literature, or who will look at you funny if you say you enjoyed old lit. The "Little House on the Prairie" books got brought up. I used to read those as a kid. I think I got up to the 4th or 5th book? And the last time I was reading them was when I was 8-9? My friend read them more recently and was talking about how one of the characters / protagonist's mother said "The only good Indian is a dead Indian," which is horrible, but honestly was a common sentiment among white settlers at the time and probably something that the author's mother had said. We agreed that censoring books isn't a good thing, instead, teaching children critical thinking skills and discernment is better. Kids ought to know the shit parts of history. My friend further went into the chilling conclusion that if we had lived in that time and place, we'd probably have the same sentiment, because a lot of your environment influences you. I agreed that it was a likely scenario, but maybe not - as some people are ahead of their time and I have put away a lot of bigotries I was raised in / encountered early on and used to have as I have grown and met people and have had life experiences. (Ex-Evangelical). Also, the above "guilt trip type of tumblr / twitter post" made me think to something I said on a blog commentary pretty soon after tRump was elected about how I'd expected that if shit really hit the fan, that I might just keep my head down. We all like to think that we would go down fighting the establishment, every one of us a Katniss Everdeen with a bow in our hand or something, but the reality is, most people just keep their heads down and survive. And I'm not a proud enough person to think that I am going to be doing anything else. "If I was a German during the Holocaust" - depending upon how much I knew and my living/financial situation, well, yeah, I expect I'd be doing what I am doing now: Writing a lot of fiction short stories with symbolism indicting horrible leaders and political and cultural situations that said leaders are too stupid to get the symbolism of (hopefully) and sadly, hardly anybody reads. Slavery days? Am I a Southerner or a Northerner? Most of my ancestry comes from Sweden, so I'd say I'd be there... but if American then... writing stuff with fantasy-ized slavery among varying castes of magical woodland animals or something in order to gentle the reader into seeing reality? And otherwise just kind of keeping my head down, surviving, not materially being able to do much?
