my mom (cool and supportive, doesn't really know one piece) and I (insane frothing at the mouth one piece fan) watched one piece live action all day yesterday.
and I'd like to report 3 things
1.) she LOVES one piece and can't stop talking about "the cool talking snails"
2.) one of her favorites is the one and only BUGGY THE CLOWN
3.) ...she thought arlong WAS HOT. IM LIKE MOM??? (we came to the agreement that it was his voice)
the ultimate takeaway is that she's obsessed with buggy. he's her phone wallpaper. I CANT--

Daily sketches that were done back in 2019 for a Kazetsuyo week. This series is everything to me. If you want to watch a fucking fantastic 23 episode anime, watch Run with the Wind.

Fun Dead Boy Detectives Easter Egg:
The Night Nurse arrives in Port Townsend in episode 4 and tells the girls their death pantomime is terrible because "the sword would've punctured her lung leaving her unable to scream".
That foreshadows how a very heartbreaking death in episode 8 plays out.

sequel to this ramble cause the way james talks bout the reduced cherik scenes throughout the xmen films in this video is making me want to kill people. 'we'll always have paris darling' what if we all blew up.
#xmen#xmen first class#xmen dofp#xmen apocalypse#xmen dark phoenix#cherik#snap chats#im gonna be sick ive rewatched this like five times#IM STILL PISSED AWF AND THEN HEARING HIS COMMENTARY ABOUT IT OUUUUGGHHHH#OOOH WHAT IF I THREW ROCKS#LIKE WHAT THE HELL WAS CUT. aside from that gorgeous 'where are you doing' scene in first class ofc BUT WHAT ELSE#im forced to believe there was a make-up and/or hate sex scene in dofp because wdym they were worried about censorship#LIKE WHAT. WHAT DID THEY CUT. CAUSE CENSORSHIP OVERSEAS IS ONLY FOR EXPLICITLY QUEER THINGS INNIT#maybe paris can be our always i hate it here NO I LOVE HOW THE PARIS BIT IS EVEN /THEIR/ COPE#LIKE PLEAAAAASSE im throwing up. maybe if i draw cherik ill feel better#on the real its genuinely so sad. like even outside of shipping this is still art being reduced#and what we have is still good but the thought that it coudlve been BETTER ...#again their connection is already good from what we have in the final but just ... the lost emphasis of it all if that makes sense#ESPECIALLY outside of first class and dofp- like their relationship really is so sparse in DP and apocalypse its so sad#i think what makes it esp sad is how upset james is about the cut material like its so nice that hes so invested in their relationship too#and its just gotta be so. Excuse Me What when youre told 'hey so your characters cant having a deeper relationship or we're fucked'#'even though the relationship between these two is one of the most fascinating aspects of this generation of xmen films'#is it so hard to want to see like .. even just an intimate 'friendship'. like would it be so bad to see them be so heartfelt#or even just bein a bit silly. or hell ill take them fighting again ANYTHING I BEG YOU the humanity between them is so important#LIKE PLEASE im gonna cope and seethe forever i fear#and when he said 'i thought 'its probably the last time we get to do this to each other'' :((((((((((((((((((((( shoot me#at least we'll always have paris ....

we all know and love "because someone fucking has to" and "you deserve to be happy, and I hope that you can find that here at camp" and for good reason- but can I share the scene that encapsulates the show for me? what i think is its thesis statement of sorts. I have so many thought on this so bare with me but:
It's from "Cameron Campbell the Camp Campbell Camper" - at the very end when David and Cameron are having their confrontation and Cameron is raving about David chosing a bunch of "bratty children" over him. and David says "That's the job. You really don't get that do you?"
Cameron thinks that because David is his employee, and more then that views Cameron as a father figure - he "owes" him blind obedience. And at that point, Cameron viewed all of the kids at camp as walking representations of their parent's wallets. Cameron doesn't see anyone - but especially not children - as people worthy of respect. Children are just devices through which he makes money. That philosophy includes and has always included David, who's literally been making Cameron money for over a decade as both camper and councilor.
David on the other hand sees things for what they are. It doesn't matter that Max is a troublemaker or that Nurf creates problems or that none of the campers listen to him - at the end of the day they are human beings deserving of care and happiness. David doesn't see children as extensions of their parents, meant to be entirely obedient to adults. Instead he sees them as young individuals who are learning to be alive for the first time and are going through all the trial and error of being a Person. And children being infuriating and disobedient is both understandable and comes with the territory of being an educator/caretaker/parent. Children are "bratty" because so far that's the only way they know how to demand for needs that aren't being met (think: "you have every right to be angry" convo). And THAT'S THE JOB. the job is teaching them how to grow, and communicate, and to make sure they're safe all the while.
as I see it, one of the running themes in the show is "even flawed people deserve a chance at community/redemption/joy." and that's something that David full-heartedly believes. I think he pities Cameron in that moment because he recognizes that Cameron both 1) doesn't see the source of genuine joy David finds in his job, and 2) is incapable of extending grace to kids learning how to be better people. and by extension is incapable of extending that grace to anyone else -including himself. (A realization Cameron later has in "Candy Kingpin") David pities him because Cameron can't see the humanity in children, and also cannot recognize that humanity within himself.
Another thing I also love about this scene is Max's reaction. When Max is upset, he defaults to anger. That's where what he's most comfortable with expressing, that's the feeling most familiar to him. So when he asks David "You seriously feel sorry for this piece of shit? How are you not pissed?" It comes from such a genuine place of concern and sense of injustice. Because in that scene, it wasn't enough that Max outsmarted Cameron. And it wasn't enough that the Millers were already aware of his plans. Max specifically seeks out a reaction from David. He wants - or at the very least expected - David to be angry. This can be read so many ways but the way I see it - this is Max's way of relating to someone, or hoping to. Max often doesn't understand David's POV, but anger is a place where he can meet him at. MAX is angry at Cameron, he can't fathom someone feeling any type of sympathy for him- let alone pity. It almost comes across like Max is angry FOR David in this scene. Because at the end of day, despite all their differences, Max still won't stand for David being unfairly screwed over. But let me know if you see it differently :)
To make a long story short, what I perceive as the "thesis statement" of the show (or at least one of the things I took away from it) is this critique on how parents view children as an extension of themselves rather than their own people. which enables parents to mistreat their children because they have the "right" to - and the antitheses to that being genuine communication and recognizing that you as an adult still have things to learn. even if it's from kids. and it's your job to both listen to and protect them.

can we just talk about how incredible wandee goodday is with their narrative devices though? the foreshadowing is incredible. there's symbolism everywhere. the oyeicher/yakdee juxtapositions are so good. even though their words and actions might contradict each other, everything gets spelled out for us so clearly, it's beautiful.

The Phantom of the Opera - Raoul
So me and my sister had our long overdue rewatch of Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary with the lovely Sierra and Ramin and Hadley! (This is another movie that we obnoxiously talk through if it is just us) So we obviously talk about the Phantom and his strange-obsessive-demanding-insecure-needy-but ultimately in the end selfless to a point love. But we love Raoul too! Like never for a moment did we think that Christine was better off with the Phantom than with Raoul honestly 😅. I think the Phantom might have been better off with Christine but at the expense of Christine.
Anyways! Off track ...
But I really like Raoul because he's one of the few male love interests that I feel I could imagine being a real person(? If that makes sense) He's got flaws, he has a hard time listening to Christine, he fights with her, etc. But he ultimately loves her enough that he is willing to both die for her and do whatever he can to protect her. He wants to have a beautiful life with her and he's always giving her a choice!
I'm a super imaginative person who has to work really hard not to live my life in books and believing that ✨my one true love is the perfect man who will never make me mad or feel emotions that are inconvenient for me✨ so I like Raoul because I feel like he is closer to reality than other love interests that I've read.

the thing is I do quite like individual stephen moffat episodes, I think they're good episodes. they get less good when you start to see patterns of writing and how he has a tendency of beating a dead horse + ongoing sexism which may be missed in one episode, but becomes very clear through repetition, but if one considers them as one-offs they're Neat bits of writing. it's when he tries to make it longform that it all falls to pieces for me and reverberates back. his lore is a mess and consequently so are his characters if one spends more than an episode or two with them.
