Eurovision 2016 vs 2017
I’ve seen a lot of people doing this and thought it was a great idea! so here goes. I’m gonna comment on each one.
-
Albania: Fairytale or World I would have gone with Fairytale if the revamp hadn’t ruined it :(
Armenia: LoveWave or Fly With Me I like LoveWave. I LOVE Fly With Me.
Australia: Sound of Silence or Don’t Come Easy I’m not a huge fan of either one, but at least Don’t Come Easy isn’t my “Overrated Song of the Year” like SoS was.
Austria: Loin d'ici or Running on Air nothing against Nathan Trent himself but I just can’t stand Running on Air.
Azerbaijan: Miracle or Skeletons Skeletons. easily. also it’s probably the biggest climber in my rankings this year.
Belarus: Help you fly or Гісторыя майго жыцця Navi’s cool and all, plus I like that their song is in Belarusian, but Ivan was literally my #1 last year.
Belgium: What’s the Pressure or City Lights I mentioned w/ Australia that I have sort of an “Overrated Song of the Year” each year, one song that everyone else seems to adore but I think is massively overrated. this year it’s City Lights.
Bulgaria: If Love Was A Crime or Beautiful Mess ughhhh I love both and this is a really hard decision. honestly I just really love Bulgarian entries in general. I’ve kinda got a feeling that this year they’ll win though so I’m going with Beautiful Mess on account of that.
Croatia: Lighthouse or My Friend I’m not a big fan of My Friend but it’s tolerable, at least. I found Nina’s voice hard to listen to.
Cyprus: Alter Ego or Gravity I like them both, but I don’t love either one. Alter Ego was higher ranked in my top than Gravity is though.
Czechia: I Stand or My Turn one of the easier decisions. I really liked I Stand [though it doesn’t hold a candle to Hope Never Dies, one of my fav Eurovision entries ever]. I don’t like My Turn though, nothing against Martina but I don’t like that style of music.
Denmark: Soldiers of Love or Where I Am another super easy decision. Where I Am is constantly stuck in my head, it’s currently sitting at #3 on my list, and I may or may not be in love with Anja.
Estonia: Play or Verona Play was in my top 5 last year and 100% did not deserve dead last :( honestly I probably would have chosen it over all of this year’s Eesti Laul entries with the exception of This Love.
Finland: Sing It Away or Blackbird Blackbird is one of those songs that’s gonna stick with me for a long, long time. it’s beautiful, wonderfully performed, and - unfortunately - fit all too well [perfectly, even] with my situation at the time it was selected.
France: J'ai Cherché or Requiem if not for the English addition, I would have gone with Requiem... but the English feels forced and just doesn’t flow with the rest of the chorus. to be honest I never understood all the hype for either one though.
FYR Macedonia: Dona or Dance Alone I was super stoked for Kaliopi’s return last year but Dona was a letdown :(
Georgia: Midnight Gold or Keep The Faith I LOVED Midnight Gold. I’m SO happy it got to the final last year. I’d honestly absolutely love it if Nika Kocharov and Young Georgian Lolitaz returned.
Germany: Ghost or Perfect Life I don’t think Ghost deserved last place in the final. I do, however, think Perfect Life does. Levina’s good but the song is one of the most generic ones I’ve heard.
Greece: Utopian Land or This Is Love I’m not a huge fan of either, but at least Utopian Land is something different?
Hungary: Pioneer or Origo I really like Hungarian and I’m glad we get to hear it again!
Iceland: Hear Them Calling or Paper still a little surprised Greta didn’t make the final last year, I thought she was 100% in.
Ireland: Sunlight or Dying To Try so, I don’t like either of their voices, to be honest. Brendan’s isn’t as grating though.
Israel: Made of Stars or I Feel Alive I liked Made of Stars better before the revamp/complete overhaul :(
Italy: No Degree Of Separation or Occidentali’s Karma Occidentali’s Karma is kind of getting old to me but at least I’ve liked it from the start, whereas it took a long time for me to warm up to No Degree of Separation.
Latvia: Heartbeat or Line ugh this was hard. Heartbeat was better live than Line has been, but in studio I like Line better... and I think it’s ranked higher than Heartbeat was, so that decides it.
Lithuania: I’ve Been Waiting For This Night or Rain of Revolution unlike a vast majority of people, it seems, I really like Rain of Revolution. I wanted to like last year too but... I don’t know, it just never really clicked for me.
Malta: Walk On Water or Breathlessly I don’t like either but at least WOW doesn’t bore me.
Moldova: Falling Stars or Hey Mamma hey Moldova, you know what? you could have been my #1 this year if only you’d chosen Vozniuc and Vio Grecu. oh well, at least you improved from last year.
Montenegro: The Real Thing or Space unpopular opinion time: I LOVED The Real Thing. I can’t decide whether I love Space or hate it though.
Netherlands: Slow Down or Lights and Shadows is it just me or does Lights and Shadows sound kinda like a mid-2000s contemporary Christian song? I had the misfortune of working somewhere over the summer that exclusively played that kind of music.
Norway: Icebreaker or Grab the Moment I really, really like Grab the Moment, I wasn’t expecting it to win MGP but I did think it had a damn good live performance.
Poland: Color Of Your Life or Flashlight I like them both about the same, I guess? I’m kinda getting sick of Flashlight though.
Russia: You Are The Only One or Flame Is Burning last year was the first Russian entry since... what, 2006? that I’ve actually genuinely liked.
San Marino: I Didn’t Know or Spirit Of The Night I’m not sure why but I really like Spirit of the Night? no, it’s not just because Valentina’s back.
Serbia: Goodbye (Shelter) or In Too Deep SANJA WAS GREAT OMG but In Too Deep comes off as... cold, I guess? I’m not a huge fan.
Slovenia: Blue and Red or On My Way I remember back in 2014/15 when Slovenia sent good songs :( I can’t stand either of these. given the apparent issues surrounding Omar Naber I’m gonna have to hand this one to Manuella.
Spain: Say Yay! or Do It For Your Lover I find them both annoying to be honest, but Say Yay was at least less annoying.
Sweden: If I Were Sorry or I Can’t Go On I just can’t like I Can’t Go On. it’s a bit too... suggestive for me, I guess?
Switzerland: The Last Of Our Kind or Apollo Switzerland generally fails to impress me :( Apollo also comes off as kinda cold.
United Kingdom: You’re Not Alone or Never Give Up On You something about You’re Not Alone just always felt/sounded off to me.
Ukraine: 1944 or Time 1944 is amazing but... Time is a rock song. I almost always go for the rock songs.
so let’s see... that makes 21 for 2016 and 20 for 2017. I’m a little surprised because 2016 was the best season of the ones I’ve followed, but... this year has some pretty great songs too :)
