I do love Bill’s movie Aperance because I mean Domhnalll Gleeson is just so gorgeous, truly one of his best looks. But here is my HC of what he looks like sense it fits the narrative better. I always viewed him this way in my head, as many do, but @cherry-pop-elf HCs made me solidify my ideas more. I did take some inspo from the movie design and I do still picture him as Domhnall Gleeson Even though I’m not to sure that was translated well in the drawing. This is just a doodle anyway. He does have wolf teeth though it’s hard to see, and you can’t see it because it’s not side profile, but the entire right side of his face is shredded. That’s why his ear is damaged on that side.

My parents and teachers are always understanding of my burnouts and art block which are very rare thank god; and it's a good thing I have my closest friends to comfort me through my work. They are always so supportive, encouraging and honest with me as I am with them. We always travel together to the college (when I don't feel like being alone) and we always travel back home together. I mean we are our own personal friend circle so of course we buy snacks for each other and meet up for lunch; it's not even like we need to worry about price since we have more than enough on us. College is 100 times better when my best friends are with me, everything feels so comfortable with them

Teacher's Pet part 1

Synopsis: The Doctor notices a student. She notices him.

a/n: thank u to the moots for sticking with me. Yall are the best. This is going to be a series. Somewhat of a dark!doctor ish fic maybe. I haven't planned this far. I have ideas. Will switch between a 3rd party but doctor centric POV and a 2nd party student centric POV.

The sun drew itself in on the cold day, light filtering through large windows in the lecture hall. It caught and reflected the motes of light swirling around. First day of the Spring term. Lots of new students trickled in and found their respective seats. Of course, the syllabus was now online and such. But the Doctor still preferred to give a paper one. He felt it helped students focus if they had it real and tangible…unable to forget.

Just like he forgot so much. A lingering pain….

He started up his usual dazzling spiel. Enough to keep them from dropping out, but not enough to rile them to madness. He learned that lesson early on in this particular charade he was distracting himself with. All he had to really do was keep Missy in the Vault and attempt to rehabilitate her. Humans were such a delicate group to keep balanced. Too much stimulation and they would self destruct. Not enough? The same but in a reverse spiral.

Or just fall asleep.

He preferred it if a few actually did fall asleep.

Allowed him to build a reputation as a teacher. Keep the act up.

He didn’t notice the young woman intently staring, writing down the key phrases from his opening statements. He was enraptured in the normal routine he has become familiar with.

The hour came to a close, and he did a bow. He was to visit Missy again some time soon. Just a cursory check. See if she’d calmed down from her last temper tantrum, where she demanded a saxophone and stated that Billy Clinton was also a war criminal, but made some sweet jazz.

He could hardly agree. She already was a mediocre piano player. And the drum set she demanded earlier lay in tatters in her cupboard.

Being her keeper and therapist was rotten work, but it warmed him. Gave him a gram of hope that she may get better and he may have his friend back once more.

Though, he knew in both is hearts, hope could be a fragile thing for a man to hold onto.

But, especially in this body, he believed in redemption and change. They both had forever to change. They had forever.

A few weeks had passed, and he noticed that keen eyes were burning the back of his neck as he scrawled on the chalkboard. It felt different than the usual glazed-over focus of people trying to write or type out his valid points. It was hot and felt more personal. Less trying to pass a class.

He paused his sentence and raked his eyes over. It was a student with large gold hoops and a few tangled gold necklaces. The Doctor recognized two or three of the symbols used on some of them from his travels through Earth’s history. She was chewing hard on her pen. He could see flecks of her tinted chap stick clinging onto the sides of it. Her eyes were squinted slightly and a slight patch of blush rested on her checks. He couldn’t tell if it was a make up look or some feverish feature of her human body. Perhaps she was in the first phases of getting sick!

He went back to his lecture. Some misfocused student was the least of his concern.

But he still felt her eyes bore into him. Intent on something. He trudged on.

He came to a close, reminded everyone of their upcoming projects and let the day start to rest. The Doctor announced that his office hours were changing to represent the spring coming soon and to “Allow you all to feel the sun on your faces, you don’t know how long you’ll have. Humans usually only live once!”

He scanned the audience and saw her shoving her notebook and that well-gnawed on pen into her bag. Big purse with a rhinestone buckle. Resembled something that Rose or Jackie would have had, he mused.

She slung that and a tote bag that seemed overstuffed and ripe for the breaking over her shoulder. She audibly groaned under the weight. He pitied her. The stressed look she had on her face was oddly enchanting in the light just starting to sink.

He knew she was struggling in the class. She did good work, yes. When he opened up questions and debate, she usually had such pointed takes that verged on mind-racing. Sometimes others would bristle against what she said on the more provocative topics he offered up. Essays and tests? Not so much. She floundered.

She had accommodations for some diagnosis or whatever. He could tell her mind was making connections in a far more tangential way than the other’s either couldn’t or wouldn’t make. And for that he did like her. Enjoyed what she brought to the table. Although, even his brains had difficulty making some of the leaps her brain did.

But why was she staring at him like that today? It was almost reverent. Very off putting.

She came forward to his desk and clicked open her notes app .

“Erm…Professor.” She cleared her throat and started up. “Uh, I was wondering if I could see you sooner rather than later. For office hours. I’m sorry for my late essay last week. I don’t know what’s going on with me. I can’t focus and I feel like I’m losing my mind half the time lately. May I have some insight or whatever you want on how I could do better. I know I’m doing…like, so bad.” She confessed and exhaled on the final note of her punctuation.

She turned a new type of stare towards him. Less intense and personal and more of a thousand-yard death grip.

Her entire demeanor in this moment was very lamb like. A confused air of innocent need to do well, to pass her classes, clouded her.

A weaker man would have felt more predatory, he noted.

She wasn’t unattractive for a human, not like past companions he worshiped the ground of. Of course. He was drawn to them for their natures, often ignoring their faces wholesale.

She started to chew and rip at her pinky nail and lower lip simultaneously…

“Of course,” He said. “I have to go help a friend with something, so I have to talk and walk.”

She nodded eagerly and gave such an appreciative smile. “Thanks!” The words came out so quickly, almost breathlessly.

She trotted along side him.

Once outside, they started discussing her options. She had to work nights, she stated, she said so they were arranging a time to work in a little extra help and tutoring.

He genuinely enjoyed her company and led her to a bench.

“What about your friend?” She asked.

“Oh, Nardole can handle himself.” He smiled. “He’ll not miss me for an extra four or five minutes.”

She laughed a bit.

She plunged her hand into her purse and started rifling around. It was a chaotic sight.

She produced a pack of cigarettes and a tiny green plastic lighter.

“Do you mind? I’m trying to quit, but it’s been hell lately.” She grimaced.

He shook his head, no, he didn’t mind. It wouldn’t affect him. Her, yes. But one little luxury, especially if she was trying to quit.

“So long as it’s your last for a while.” He took the teacherly route.

She lit up and took a huge drag. Closing her eyes he noticed that deep look of exhaustion had given her dark purple and almost black under eye circles. She had apparently tried to cover them up with some make up products and some mascara and smudged eyeliner. She held that breath in for a few seconds. It was almost beautiful.

She exhaled and fluttered them open. The smoke wisped and flew away quickly in the gentle breeze.

“Yeah, thanks. People get so weird about smoking. But they’ll vape? Like, indoors. All the time.” She rolled her eyes at that mildly hypocrisy.

They planned for her to meet up with him in his office on Monday just before the lunch hour. Then turned the conversation to some topics in debate that another student, a male who irked her with his constant urge to play Devil’s Advocate. She had some very often-overlooked viewpoints and a very bizarre way of describing things. It was enchanting.

“Thanks.” She ignored a boundary and squeezed his hand. He felt a holy jolt of electricity go up his arm from the small touch. “I gotta go…you’ve got a friend. Works been slow and I have some…appointments. So I have to make sure I’m perfect.” She elaborated with an almost tic-like shake of her head.

“Yes, my friend is probably going insane dealing with our little issue.” He responded in kind. Missy had probably caused Nardole to melt down or malfunction.

He watched her leave towards the bus stop. Her bags hitting her back as she rushed. Her coat barely covering her bottom and the belt caught in the hem of it. He felt himself feeling almost physically unable to leave the bench. Something tugging at his gut was preventing him from doing so. It felt akin to what River and Clara evoked in him but different.

River and Clara were strong and capable, avant-garde. Self-confident. Cocky. But this student was seemingly the inverse. Very vulnerable and nervous to the point of a near imperceptible, even to him with his keen Time Lord senses, shake and a heart that was audibly racing in its cage. Coupled with her addiction to cigarettes and minor tendency towards self mutilation via near-constant picking and chewing…

Something dark, but heartwarming rushed through his core and took root.

He felt himself deeply looking forward to Monday.

I know in Usagi’s ref sheet he’s 16 (not sure if he’s been aged up because of all the art), but you’d drawn some art of Usagi with artistic nudity as well. Remembering back to that one really fun thing where you had us pick how Usagi spends a day, he said that he felt “dirty” and felt Leo’s hands on him, before it switched to bugs, and he seemed to have marks on him, plus the art of all the bites and what I can assume are nonsexual(?) hickies??

Is Usagi a victim of SA?

His relationship with Leo seems to hint that at times, with Leo’s nonconsentual biting and repeated flirts, plus all the comments in the past in art with Ichida or Mikey saying Leo “takes Usagi’s belt off” or “Well I can’t just meow and spread my legs to get what I want”..

I might be reading too into it, but I love their dynamic and am trying to make a list of the psychology behind them and what really happens in their relationship, as most art seems to be behind rose colored glasses or from Leo’s manipulative point of view

OKAY SO.

When I originally made the AU, I was not a victim of sexual assault myself, and therefore did not feel that I had a right to represent an SA victim, especially one as a main character.

Usagi was originally just meant to be representative of an abuse victim/people pleaser having a lack of bodily autonomy and (bc of my own hatred and disgust of physical touch) I often project that into Usagi (the artistic nudity is bc 1. I don't think nudity is inherently sexual (or that anything is inherently sexual) 2. Usagi has a body type I love drawing and 3. It is a metaphor for how he's objectified and vulnerable, and also with an air of shame around his body, evoking body dysmorphia/dysphoria and purity culture)

I'm also aro/ace and autistic so my relationship to my own body, sexuality, nudity etc is not conventional and may not be popular but that is MY intent behind my art and not whatever anyone else says the intent is

WITH THAT BEING SAID, as my life did not stop after I made the AU, I eventually experienced sexual assault myself (1 out of 6 n all) and I will say, with my newer perspective, that if you want to view Usagi as an SA victim, that is completely fine and valid within the narrative. If you Don't want to, that is also completely fine.

Usagi is meant to be seen more as a representation of a lack of autonomy. Of course that lends itself to Leo assaulting Usagi, but this is also a lack of autonomy in his own life, body, relationships, etc.

The life of a gifted kid people pleaser, constantly bending to the whims of expectations and such. If that means he's an SA victim to you, he is. If that means he's trans to you, he is, if that means he's from the bronx to you, etc etc. Usagi kinda evolved be a vent character to me, so he can absolutely be that to yall 👌

The comments made by characters like Mikey or Ishida are generally non-canon now, they're a bit crass and almost. Just kicking Usagi when he's already down, which just feels like torture porn after a while. The hamatos see Usagi as 'Leo's thing' but that's simply objectification bc the turtles donr really see other people as People. I did that mostly as a form of bullying to myself, kinda cus I always feel Gross and projected that.

As for the rose colored glasses part, I agree. I adore contrasting themes/exaggeration/satire in art, so I love dark topics seen in cutesy/silly ways, often bc its much more accurate to how it can feel/look from the outside. A dizzy, serotonin laced kinda trance as your brain barely processes what is going on. I cut bc I get a kinda dopamine rush high from it so I put that perspective in my stuff often LMAO

I'd also be lying if I didn't say I loved Dreamalgia and their use of creepycute styles and aesthetics. Plus it lends to how Leo twists the narrative of their relationship in the AU and to the viewer (that's also why Usagi seems kinda 1 dimensional sometimes, Leo has made him a shell of his former self, before Leo Usagi was a lot more nuanced LOLZ)

I never consented to this mundanity

Quick disclaimer: if this is the first time you see me, welcome! This essay discusses a concept that I coined, known as alterreality. You can read more about it here. If you have any further questions about it, please send me an email. I would love to hear from yall.. 

How many of your favourite Dungeons and Dragons sessions had their hero picking out a phone plan? How about going to the grocery store? I’d give more examples, but you get the idea. You would think that by now, after alterreality is more established, I would have dreamed that I, out of anyone, would have a solution on how to turn these things into an epic quest. While I am working on these answers as we speak, more often than not, I  am the victim of these situations. I would call this essay something generic, like “factors that may get in the way of alterreality,"  but the title I chose rings some sort of truth to me. Although we technically have free will (extistentialist theories nonwithstanding), there is so much boring crap in life that just needs to get done. While this mundanity corresponds with how many individuals see the world, it very much does not gel with the “magical girl/fantasy hero” alterreality that I have constructed for myself. With this, here are some limits that I have found when practicing alterreality.

The biggest limit that I have come across is other people. It's very hard to believe that a grocery store is actually an infested dungeon when someone else is there with you, telling you their shopping list every five seconds. It feels the same as that one guy who loves to remind you that wrestling is fake (note for future writing: wrestling is alterreality!). Yes, I know where I actually am, but let me add whimsy, goddamnit! A smaller nitpick, but when others are around you, it becomes much harder to listen to your music, an essential component of immersion for me. Apparently, when others are with you, you have to engage in conversation with them? I know, wild stuff! This, however, does go two ways! If you happen to find someone else who wishes to participate in alterreality with you (I have yet to find this), then your immersion would skyrocket. I could not be any more thankful to everyone online who validated my experiences, and if (and hopefully when!) I meet even one of you in physical space and you would wish to participate in alterreality with me, I would be more than happy for you to join my adventure. 

Another limit that I have found is the cognitive limit. I have discussed this with others before; however, it is very hard to be both immersed in a given story to the point of belief and complete a cognitively draining task at the same time. Personally, I was working on a project while performing alterreality recently. Everything was going smoothly until I encountered a technical error in which I felt kicked out of my personal reality and back into my regular, mundane existence. I plan on experimenting with preparing an alternate reality beforehand, focusing on the task at hand, then returning to my true reality after; however, I would love a solution that would be more immersive in the moment. 

My third limitation that I would like to bring up is the unpredictable nature of reality. You could plan a perfect hero journey circle, but all social reality can give you is a confusing mess of hero(?) spaghetti. If the event that you were planning on creating the final battle over got cancelled, not much can be done but shrug and throw in the towel. As well, conversations in reality do not pan out the way they do in a story. I am still holding on to the conversation about pottery I had with my friends and a random museum worker, thinking that it has to be important for some quests coming up. Meat reality has many, many beautiful things. However, more often than not, it becomes a monkey wrench in my imagination. 

I did think of one solution to many of these problems. One factor that I think would fix a lot is if modern designers cared more about wonder and whimsy. To put it simply, there are too many Costcos and not enough castles. I’m not saying there should be cathedrals on every block (my city is messed up as it is and does not need the Catholic Church adding to the list of problems). However, I am saying that if you are going to design a place with a lot of foot traffic, it should both serve as fun and imagination fuel. This being said, this does not solve the social aspect. There will always be scenarios where one must maintain a mask of munanity in order to go about day-to-day life. There will always be situations that are too cognitively difficult to create a reality over. There will always be boredom. I may not have consented to this mundanity, but my hope is that I will forge an alterreality for myself that will transcend the physical world, and my life will become a true fantastical adventure.

something i’ve shared before on the subreddit is how andre’s bpd coded. now i recently ish got my bpd diagnosis and so am i projecting in trying to cope with it? maybe (definitely) but also hear me out

So i’m glad andre and cal dont have official diagnoses aside from cal being add simply bc the whole idea that is stressed is there is no reason for what happened having happened. plus bpd was even more stigmatized in 2002 than it is now so it wouldve defo been some weird glamorozed shit

he goes from fine /neutral to angry within seconds. and its over the stupidest shit too. he sees the world as for them or against them, he goes from seeing himself as gods to genuinely showing hopelessness, unstable self image is massive in bpd. we see cal have interests, some sort of life outside the plan while to andre hurting others is genuinely his purpose in life. cal sees it as a way out, andre sees it as a way of living.

UNSTABLE RELATIONSHIPS. thats a big one. people see andre’s character as one-note compared to cal. i disagree—the fact we dont get andre talking to us *alone* is telling in his character as is. his relationship with cal is not a normal relationship. something coccio has said before that sticks with me is that the main character is their friendship—In 94 minutes they tell us nothing even if all they do is talk.

This leaves openness to interpretation beautifully to be frank. many people observe it as queer attraction and i definitely agree thats a valid point—However keeping it ambiguous gives more wiggle room for interpreting their friendship as no two people in the fandom describe it the same. that in itself is relationship instability because well…it is.

the way he and rachel describe each other is also interesting because if you notice rachel, in being an outsiders source which we rarely get in the movie until the security cameras come on, is wary of andre, agreeing when cal described him as violent even if he gaslights her afterwards. however when he describes rachel, its a matter of, “idk what her problem is, i didnt do anything”. this is another instance of instability, also a big thing with bpd is needing to be right and the victim which ngl mecore.

Also—He doesnt see what he’s doing as wrong. people with bpd dont tend to see themselves as doing anything wrong most situations. and if theyre questioned, it could trigger anger, as seen in the suicide note tape.

Abandonment issues. holy hell. is that a big one, andre’s biggest fear imo is cal abandoning the plan, while cal honestly is the embodiment of “fuck it we ball”. cal can definitely be interpreted as andre’s favorite person. cal gives no signs of abandoning him or the plan, yet andre thinks he is anyway. tbh the poem scene sells it for me even more because he saw that as reckless and involuntarily abandoning the plan. ZD wouldnt have happened without cal, abandoning the plan is abandoning the friendship. i saw the scene in the car as textbook splitting. he went to anger and implying that his best friend was stupid, acting like he was a pawn rather than a friend imo. within minutes. hell, the camera in itself is a character in its own right and he goes fromteaching us, the audience, how to pull off what they eventually pull off, to threatening us like we’re his victims (“59 seconds is all it takes for me to hide this sucker and come after you”)

that also feeds into the paranoia because the whole movie he’s so concerned that cal would give them away even in minor instances. like bffr a poem isnt gonna put yall on a watchlist lmfao. also dissociations a big one and when he lays on the ground looking into nothingness post egg scene that felt very dissociate-y.

self destructive behaviors

Arguably, planning this in the first place is self destructive among other things. also a minor detailin the shooting scene is him putting a gun to his face but dry firing it multiple times without seeing it it was loaded.

also two teenagers lighting fireworks when i know damn well neither of em got licenses is impulsive if i ever seen it.

also identity disturbance—

so essentially, cal and andre balance each other out in every possible way. from physical appearance to dynamic, but something else is their perception of themselves. cal knows who he is. he has interests, he has actual close friends outside of andre, he simply wants to hurt, and take himself down in the process. zero day is a suicide mission for him but andre really doesnt see himself with a purpose. he’s canonically going to college, in all these activities (that are vastly different if you ask me) but is obviously not fulfilled. i definitely see this in the scene with his dad. he *sees* more for himself but really all he sees for himself is zero day. to do it as a living. cal sees it as his end but andre to some extent sees it as his existence. he latches onto that for identity.

i’ll prolly add more to this if i think of more lmfao

Idk im probably missing a lot of context, but when reading about what yall have to say about the stuff she writes it reads like you think thats stuff shouldnt exist in fiction and is a reflection of anyone who writes that kind of stuff.

Im still against LO because what shes done is completely fucked and i can tell from the evidence ive seen that she definitely projects onto her work, and tries to cover it up.

But i cant agree that people who write or enjoy that kind of content are automatically fucked up or cant see the difference between enjoying such topics in fiction and in reality. If that's what you're trying to say.

i said many times (but not lately so that's my fault there) that if all LO ever wrote was stockholm or any other fic i'd have never cared about her as much as to do a whole blog dedicated to her. i won't read that kind of content out of anything more than morbid curiosity, but i also don't care about existing by itself and as long people aren't trying to shove it to my face without warning, i don't care for the readers either. if i honestly thought that LO wrote all of that just to be an edgelord and there's nothing more to it, she doesn't actually believe any of it or isn't sincere about it, then you wouldn't even see me talking about it in the first place. the issue here is, as you pointed out, that LO clearly project herself a lot through her works, that even she admits are self indulgent and a power fantasy for her, that she said explicitely that she uses them to deal with her "issue with intimacy"... and those work also happened to be the ones where there is a very consistent abuse/pedophilia apology theme all through out. LO is the one who talks about how she sincere is on her works and how much they mean to her, so you can't make the argument "fiction vs reality" here because she's not treating it like that. she's treating her stories as thing she'd actually like to happen and when those things include raping children and women while they're unconscious, only to later be lauded as the good guy exactly because of that raping, i think that's very valid to call out.

LO does not want there to be a separation between herself and her art. so let's not make it. again, in case it wasn't clear, this is entirely a LO thing. not about bad things happening in fiction that i don't like.

-He cuts his own hair because he doesn't trust anyone with his hair (Naoto, Shinji, and Ken beg him to go to a barber).

-Probably shows off his scars to random people who ask about his pre-police career.

-Gets paired up with Chie a lot and drives the car when this happens.

-Kotone sometimes makes food for him because he will blow up his kitchen if he tries to cook.

-Will probably snap, fight, and win if provoked enough.

-Is the one character in the show with logic and reasoning to show how dumb the comedy is.

Misc stuff: -Sae and Makoto are the one characters that have 5 minutes of screentime every 3 episodes, but the sfx hype them up like they are gods among man.

-Dojima is the one guy always talked about in the background and shows up for a cameo but has no plot significance.

-Naoto gave Akechi some tips on being a successful detective because he seemed reasonable (oh how wrong he was...).

-Mitsuru tells Katsuya to stop Akihiko from doing anything stupid, yet when she shows up in episodes she ends up doing stupid shit with everyone.

-Adachi is still in jail and he gives Chie and Naoto the worst advice known to man when everything goes to shit.

I read the new chapter and I am obsessed! It’s literally the best gift imaginable after tough week. First of all -Maureen and Bucky’s chat. It was so good. Him realising how much this place and situation already drained her and showing her compassion for it??? Thank you! Also, Maureen is my girl with her connections. Of course she (and Buck) would come up with a scheme, and of course she would utilise her friends(?) and acquaintances to try to get them all (but specifically Ida out of there). This tidbit about how Poles just needed somebody new to talk about home to -I feel like that would be so true for every prisoner in there and it made me tear up a little. And her not going to Gale with it but to Egan, because she worries of overburdening the former? My heart 🥹 Also, Maureen once again being the one to clock one’s strengths and recommend Lu for the job! I love her. I really do. Which leads me to the next part. I’m so thankful that Egan pointed out Gale’s habit of infantalizing Lu. Yes, she’s very young and probably should not be ever put under circumstances to end up where they all ended up, but she is an adult. A damn competent one, with military rank to prove it. So yeah, Egan is so right she’s not Gale’s little girl, she’s an officer with skills they very much are in need for. And laying in bed can just as easily kill you in that sort of place. Sorry for the rant, I’m really not a fan of this “she’s just withering little flower, destined to be crushed” sentiment and I love that you are not leaning into that. And, my god, my favourite part is hands down girl working together on their experiment! Lu and Maureen figuring out how to get sulfur, making themselves a diy chemistry lab and succeeding at it! The cheek kisses, the excitement, the pure friendship, my heart is melting. It makes you forget where they really are. And that last line was perfect, once again you killed it (and me alongside it). Thank for a chapter full of Maureen and Egan (I really love their friendship) and Lu and Gale. You really can feel how much they all care for another. I’ll probably be gushing about everything in this chapter for a long time

I imagine that like Bucky and his pub connections that win Gale a bike back in England, Maureen has a tendency to make buds with a weird medley of folks and then know how to utilize it later, ha. And Egan and Gale! So much subtext going on in my mind there, ngl. The infantilizing particularly. We saw in Sanchez how Gail tries to recall some of the things Egan has told him, the council he’s given him, for instance, what has been doesn’t always carry over to now. His worries ignited by past concerns aren’t always valid here and now, he projects a lot. And he does that on Lu, too. Sees so kvuh of his younger self and he sorta tends to suffocate more than champion her with his protection. (I honestly adore both their styles of loving). So it’s been fun to think of how Egan can recognize that, recognize it’s hard for Gale to let go but also insist on it.

And the. Oh, my sweet little pyromaniacs, I just know Lu and Maureen bond over being mildly insane with the risk taking haha. And there’s good ole Benny wetting the place down to try to keep the damage minimal. But you won’t catch him stopping them. What a king.

I’ve been trying to decide if I should say this or not because I feel like it’s gonna be controversial and people might come in and tell me that I’m wrong and I’m stupid.

But ignoring all of the GVD stuff because she’s not involved, does anybody else think that the hair color might have some reason to do with why people assume they are together and pushing the narrative? Because he was with a redhead (even if it wasn’t real red hair) for the last year on and off. And I feel like once people saw her hair they kind of were like “well then he’s got this type, clearly they are together.” When in reality we don’t know that.

I also think there might be a little bit of self projection onto her. Which happens, and isn’t a bad thing unless the narrative being pushed from that isn’t true. People really want them to be a thing because she’s not like the last girl. She’s much more normal. She has tattoos, and is shorter, curvier, and still objectively beautiful, but she could be compared looks wise to a lot of fans, myself included.

I think people desperately want them to be together, which is fine, but she still doesn’t need all the unwanted attention. Together or not let’s try not to say mean things (which most of what I have received is not mean, good job yall! 🤝 ), I think that it’s good to just see how things play out.

I know that 🐋 put an end to the conversation earlier, and I’m gonna put an end to it now after this. there is a reason why nix hydra has low ratings on glassdoor, and theyve been known to be scumming for nearly five years now i have no idea why the fandom expects so much and thinks so highly of that shitty company and then get surprised when they do shitty things against what they think they should do. and its funny how people keep fighting on and on for fictif/the arcana even now, like when are yall going to wake up. good on you for leaving when you could!

I should clarify two things:

1) I wrote a very long Glassdoor review of Nix Hydra that was so angry, a loved one convinced me to take it down so that it didn’t cause problems for me or people still working there. I saved a draft somewhere…

2) My anger is entirely at very, very specific people at the company. By and large, the people who made The Arcana and Fictif were not only deeply passionate about making games for women and the LGBT community. They fought tooth and nail for this. Even as Community Manager, I would have long talks with some of the writers and artists about how they made sure to write [Female Character] in a way that validated and welcome queer femme players, or discussions of how characters like [Name] came from a place of empathy and compassion for mental health that was meant to provide comfort. I remember long meetings about very small plot points and not whether they would “make sense canonically”, but what effect they would have on the types of readers we want to provide games for.

It seems relevant to say that I co-led the initiative for sell Arcana posters to raise funds for The Trevor Project. This came from a place of real sincerity from my coworkers and I to leverage the rise in merch sales to do direct Good for the communities that meant so much to us. When I drafted the proposal, the percentage of profits I said we should donate was very low. This wasn’t out of selfishness but out of a fear that “The Boss Folk” would torpedo the project if I asked for too much. The person co-leading the project with me strongly insisted I ask for something significantly higher. Something like 80-90% (do NOT quote me on exact numbers). This felt audacious to my cynical mind, but I pitched it and the management approved it without hesitation. We barely covered costs on the Arcana posters, but it was done because we wanted to make sure we were giving money directly to people that needed support.

My point with this anecdote isn’t to say the company is all saints. I was very sincere that a lot of what happened there left me damaged and upset and hurt. But it is to say that the vast majority of people I got to work with chose to work at Nix Hydra instead of other places because they genuinely believed in the work and getting to make games for communities that don’t often get games made for them. That this was populated by people who cared, who fought for their art, and who wanted to make it for the people they cared about.

It’s been stated that our female-led routes didn’t sell as well. What hasn’t been explicitly said before is that we kept doing them because so much of the company fought with tooth, nail, and blood to make sure that wlw stories were being told.

Also, I was confused about my sexuality all my life, and Muriel’s route is what made me finally accept my bisexuality.

What I’m saying is that there are things that I disliked about Nix Hydra in the strongest possible terms. There are things for which I will always, always be grateful.

So I’m always down to complain about what messed me up there. And I’ll always be a little damaged about it. But I’m never going to write off the whole thing as entirely awful. I hope that makes sense and appreciate your reaching out. :)

Still not shutting up about Poison Ivy. I feel like she'd kill most of the men that draw her. I'm going out on a limb here but a lot of her more suggestive designs feel like they were at least influenced by a man.

Instead, we have at least a handful of posts popping up in the tags a few times every month, writing essays trying to justify a mediocre cishet yt man's lazy writing. This is a continuation of our discussion on my last post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me, I think I agree with all of it.

Not sure how I feel about the calling eachother out bit or near scolding of others in the comments. Please let's be welcoming and respectful of others's thoughts regardless of whether or not we agree with it. It's ok to hold diverse views. We do after all come from different backgrounds and have accumulated different experiences and I think it plays out in how we see things. Everyone's opinion is valid. Plus, I purple yall.

Now, do I think he is trying to pack on muscles........? Yes. He said so himself in Festa when he said he would rush to the mirror when he thought he had gained some muscle only to find out his biceps looks like a muscled kindergartner.

He also said lately he's into exercising and staying in shape which is true because for quite sometime now since early this year he has been talking about how "weak" he is in their Vlives and have even given instances of him not being able to do certain things- certian simple and easy tasks- which is typical of him I'd say. He's always talking about how "weak" he is especially around JK and juxtaposing that with "but JK is so strong" which I'm sorry but I have to smirk at right now cos it's such a typical gay pick me simp thing to do. We've all been there.

Do I think he's trying to be a muscle bunny or revert back to his body shape around debut? Absolutely not. But I do think he is straddling the line of toxic masculinity which is what the conversation is about.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to stay in shape or even enjoying work outs. Last night I ran downstairs because I had left my stew on the stove and now this morning I called renew my gym membership because I discovered running can be actually fun to do... No. No it's not. The gym instructor would have to come for me kicking and screaming.

RM have said even though JM looks skinny and fragile he is one of the strongest within the group. Besides, this is not the first time he's expressed interest in working out and building his body- hello, on Era?

I remember people complaining he looked too buffed up in that period on SNS and PJMs quickly jumping in to clear the searches for it. The choreo for On required agility and endurance and required the members- not just JM build up some definition in their muscles.

We've seen them go through all that. So it's not simply a matter of black and white staying in shape or doing it because he feels pressured to do so. Especially, when you consider that he's undertaken some pretty unhealthy measures in the past in attempts to lose weight or soften out his body post these muscle building, weight gaining periods and we've always chalked it up to his dance and how as a contemporary dancer he has to look a certain way or this or that to try to justify and make sense of it. Next you, know there are six chapters of break the silence of him talking about all the dark places he's been, the pressures to look his best for his fans or for his job and all these other painful stories he's shared with us over the years. And it's like, but why? Why do this to yourself?

I'll never forget the look he gave JK when JK was talking about wanting to build muscles in one of the interviews for the promotion of Be- I think I made a post on it. When JK noticed JMs disapproving glare he backtracked saying he would want to stay skinny after gaining all that muscles.

I mean if I'm to be honest, he was bound to crack at one point. The signs were there being surrounded by all these men who adhere to the traditional aesthetics of a masculine body- from Namjoon to Taehyung.

I wish y'all will steer the conversation in this direction and make it more about gender norms and expressions and breaking stereotypes and diversity in the body aesthetics of men.

Jimin is a man too. He just isn't what people traditionally will label masculine. Androgynous is more an apt word in my opinion. How many times have I said, I think Jungkook hetero passes because his body aesthetics is quintessentially what most associates with a masculine man?

Breaking gender barriers is not just about embracing feminine apparels- that teeters on cross dressing quite frankly and can be a bit performative and baity. Then you have to consider their culture in itself has an inherent pro gender diversity feel to it.

Now, let me explain my problem with the Klout ad campaign a little bit.

Do you see how Tae stands out? And I'm not saying this to fuel the "Tae was their fav" debacle. It's the 007 feel... I'll explain in a bit.

Most often, alcohol advertisers as well as most advertisements intended to sell to men often try to appeal to men's internalized ideals of masculinity or try to shape and define what a man or masculinity should look like. These ideals are so often toxic and detrimental to men and mostly women too.

Take a look at these ads for example. All I had to do was google search ads for men.

Real men drink milk and look at the image they present as real men. This blatantly implies if you don't look like this, if you are not a strong cliff climbing man with abs you are not a real man.

The second image is subtle. I call it the 007 slash Kingsmen-esque ideals of masculinity. It portrays men as sexy cool badass- works out but isn't too buff, filthy rich or middle class, wears Rolex, designer clothes, is kind but has a mean exterior and is every 13 year old wattpad girls's dream of a man. In fiction, you see this kind of masculinity in characters such as Edward cullens to Christian Grey. And a lot of ads for men alternate between these two ideals of masculinity.

Do you see how they modeled Taehyung in these ads after this kind of masctheme? Tae looks the same in almost all the ads. 007 sexy cool badass.

Now, I may not be a makeup beauty guru or MUA or whatever, but one thing I've picked up on especially when it comes to makeup for men- BTS and Kpop idols mostly is that, they soften out the harsh features on their faces and make them appear more androgynous or effeminate to suit the Kpop look and they ditch it entirely in different settings.

So for instance, Tae and Kookie's natural hawkish eyebrows tend to get softened around the arch and edges- don't know how the fuck they do that- but it appears less in your face intense most times when they wear make up in kpop related contents.

However, in certain other contents that lean towards a certain gender theme those features are emphasized. Not to say hawkish features are masculine features. Just saying in men, Kpop idols, my observation is they soften those features out with makeup or surgery.

Now, take a look at JM in these ads and look at everything from his posture, make up, hairstyle and brows. It's as if someone took an eraser to his androgynousity and erased his feminine side. Take a look at his photo above and compare it to the ads.

I am not a man. But I feel the gender look they went for, intended to appeal to men, tapped into a rather outdated stereotype of what man and masculinity should look like.

What aesthetics of masculinity is Jimin gravitating towards now? And I'm not talking clothes, I'm talking the expression of his gender. Time and again, he's talked about how looking a certain way made him uncomfortable in the past because he was constantly fighting his feminine side. He is androgynous. Sometimes he leans more into his feminine side. Other times he leans more into his masculine side but this is the only time he's leaning into his masculinity that makes me uncomfortable to watch because like I said it bothers on toxic masculinity.

He's said whoever he was, the version fighting to look masculine, that wasn't him. So forgive me if I worry whenever i see him suppressing his feminine side and acting like 'one of the boys.' Him staying in shape is not synonymous with him erasing a valid part of himself or suppressing it. He can stay in shape, celebrate his masculinity and still be FILTER.

What I'm saying is, this not a conversation about him exercising. This is a conversation about an ad erasing his feminine side and boxing him into a narrow expression of his gender and how that might be affecting his view of himself especially in the way he's been gravitating towards a certain masculine aesthetics and how that could be toxic.

Tae has said the same thing and BTS have agreed the JM as of 2019 was the real JM according to them.They said he was that way- suppressing his feminine side, because there weren't much songs and choreos that suited him and so he had had to bend himself to fit with the others.

And so when I see him leaning a certain way I tend to wonder if his exterior environment is playing a role in that. I hope you can understand that.

He is a contemporary dancer and strength and flexibility are prerequisites for his craft. The company go out of their way to incorporate contemporary dance in their choreos for JM's sake which helps solve that problem of him trying too hard to look a certain way.

May be I'm projecting. May be my little brother is effeminate and I've always recommended Jimin as a role for him to tell him not to try to look different just because other boys look different. May be I've seen him try one too many times to kill himself in the gym trying to build on muscles and getting frustrated with himself because he ends up looking like someone else. You can't gym the queerness away. Society will never let you be who you want to be so you might as well flip it the middle finger.

These boys are being shaped by their environment. I hate to say this but the environment they are in isn't exactly progressive and the longer they stay in there cut off from the outside world...

Flying out helps. Meeting different people and being exposed to different cultures and conversations on gender expression helps.

Anywho, these are just concerns I have. Will have them till I see that's not where he is headed towards. But let's not act like these ad campaigns do not and can not psychologically impact these boys especially as these advertisers are not looking to tap into their own definition of gender and masculinity but shape it and redefine it to appeal to the demographic they intend to market to.

I think this is just a grey area for me. Rather than try to change JM to look a certain way in order to sell alcohol. I think the ground breaking thing would be to have a man who looks like JM show us how someone like him would sell a can of drink. I think that would be revolutionary.

i’ve seen a lot of posts flying around recently discussing the use (or not) of they/them pronouns for the canon vessels and as a Certified They/Them myself i feel at least a little obligated to add my two cents

you don’t really... see nonbinary characters in media too often. least of all when their nonbinary-ness isn’t like.. a huge deal. the vessels being genderless and using the pronouns they do is super important to me and many other people who identify like me, because it’s so so rare to get that sort of representation at all, least of all without it being made into a whole social justice issue or commentary (which is all great ofc, but it’s nice to have something just casual once in a while). which we get in hollow knight! and i love that! so do many others in my position!

however when it comes to fandom, both for this game and others with nb characters and protagonists (COUGHundertale) there is somewhat of a problem with people who see a genderless character, explicitly said to be genderless by the source material and/or the creator, and go “oh cool! a blank slate to project whatever idea of gender i want onto!”. which is pretty textbook erasure. and usually that gender is male, from what i’ve seen, which is a whole other can of worms about male being the “standard” that i don’t want to open but sure is a thing too that i and many others have noticed

making gender headcanons for canon characters that aren’t canonly marginalised identities is naturally all fine n stuff, but think of it this way (purely theoretical scenario): say there’s a gay character in media, who is widely seen as good representation, and openly shown/said to be gay in the source material or by the creator. however, for whatever reason, a big chunk of the fandom just so decides that this character is instead straight, and only describes them as straight and ships them with the opposite gender, because “it doesn’t matter that much” or “it’s up to interpretation” or “people make straight characters gay all the time” or *insert excuse here*

can we all agree that that would be homophobic at worst and erasure at the very least? ok? cool. that’s how I feel when I see people downplaying the importance of nonbinary/genderless characters in media. especially considering they’re even rarer to see compared to gay characters. you could replace the above example with just about anything - trans characters being hc’d as cis, poc characters being hc’d as white, it’s all the same principle and proves the same point

at the same time, though, nonbinary people do exist who use binary pronouns! that’s incredibly valid, pronouns don’t define your gender etc etc, my problem is more with people who completely erase the fact the vessels are nonbinary at all. i’d be considerably less iffy with people who make binary pronoun headcanons keeping that in mind (though anything other than the canon they/them for them does make me eeehh a bit, it really isn’t my place to judge people who aren’t exactly crossing any lines, so yall keep going even if its not my thing) but sadly i don’t see that too often

tl;dr cis/binary people please keep in mind that the canon vessels’ gender and pronouns may not seem so important for you, but to others it’s a huge deal when it comes to representation that’s otherwise very few and far between. please be considerate and listen to nb people when we say it’s an issue!
