Your phone is blowing up with notifications from the brainstorming shared chat with Wooyoung, San and Hongjoong, making you wince. You’ve just finished some promotions for Faux Fling and you’re dying to know what your friends think. But Park Seonghwa, your co-star, was hanging around still and you couldn't afford to look at the chat while he was around.

“Someone’s popular,” Seonghwa noted the blasting of your phone.

You smiled mirthlessly. “That is why we’re here, is it not?”

Seonghwa pushed some hair behind his ear. “I suppose your popularity will add to the views.”

You fake-laughed. “That’s such a compliment coming from you, Seonghwa. I think I might faint.”

“Fleur, the car’s ready!” Mingi called out to you.

“Ah, there’s my manager.” Saved by the Mingi, once again. You bowed respectfully to Seonghwa and practically ran to Mingi’s side.

You took his arm and clung to him. “Mingi-yah, do you think we could stop for some treats at the convenience store? To bring home to the girls?”

Mingi smiles sweetly. “That’s sweet of you.”

The treats are actually to distract your group mates so that you can spend some precious time on your phone with your friends--your fans--to get the scoop.

You let out a groan of frustration and fell back to your bed. One of your bandmates poked her head in to check on you.

“Seonghwa still giving you grief? How you made it through the entire filming of that drama without killing him is still a mystery to me.”

“Me too,” You grumbled to yourself.

“At least the fans like it?” Your member plopped down beside you. She waved her phone screen in front of your face and your eyes widened.

“You’ve got a secret Twitter account?!” You exclaimed.

Your younger member rolled her eyes. “Of course I do. I know you do too, don’t even pretend that you don’t. But look!”

You quickly scrolled through the comments, heart jumping at all the positive feedback from your fans. You sighed in relief when you didn’t see any posts from San or Wooyoung or Hongjoong. That would be hitting it a little too close to home, if you were being honest. You weren’t quite sure how you’d feel if you knew your member had dipped into the thirsty side of your fandom.

“Guess I can endure a bit more of Seonghwa until the promotions are done,” you admitted.

Your member threw her arms around you. “You’re doing great, Unni, fighting!”

It was going to take a whole lot more than ‘fighting’ to get you through Wooyoung’s biker prequel. Especially if he asked you to beta read it like last time.

He's Too Different (Chapter 1)

I recently have gave into my thoughts and began writing a LandOscar fanfic. You can also find this fic on ao3 under the same handle. I hope you guys enjoy <3

The first time Oscar formally met Lando could only be described as what a fever dream feels like. 

Oscar had gone against his better judgment and decided to go with Logan to a party after the other practically begged him to, claiming he would be bored alone. In reality, Logan wouldn't have been alone. Oscar was extremely positive that Logan's boyfriend, Alex, would be there. But he had a particularly rough week due to finals and gave into Logan’s pleading thinking it would be a good distraction. So now here he was at a party surrounded by people he didn’t know. Logan had wandered off with Alex the moment they got there, leaving Oscar to fend for himself in the sea of, mostly, drunk college students. After grabbing himself a drink and pushing his way through the sea of bodies, Oscar found a spot in the corner where he now stood, feeling both invisible and acutely aware of the chaos around him. He watched people laugh and sway to the music, their carefree energy amplifying his sense of isolation. His gaze caught on Logan and Alex across the room, deep in conversation with Alex’s friends. Oscar couldn’t help but smile at the sight; despite the noise and frenzy, Logan always seemed to light up in social settings.

Oscar recalled how Alex, the veterinary medicine major passionate about animals, had easily integrated into their lives. He’d even invited Alex to their biweekly movie nights, where the three of them would settle in with popcorn and watch their favorite films. Nearby, George was animatedly chatting with a group, his fashion sense as bold as his personality. Oscar remembered their past conversations, often punctuated by George’s playful critiques of Oscar’s style—especially the infamous drawstring jeans. It was these moments of camaraderie that made Oscar appreciate the friendships he had, even if he sometimes felt like an outsider. 

Max and Charles were probably the closest friends he had in Logan and Alex’s group. Max, also an engineering major, had met him in an advanced thermodynamics class, where they partnered on a project. During that time, Max often brought his boyfriend Charles, an architecture major, along with him, and the three of them quickly bonded. Initially, Max appears rather closed off and serious, but as Oscar gets to know him, he reveals himself to be quite the character. In contrast, Charles was outgoing yet charmingly awkward, often stumbling over his words in excitement. Oscar felt a unique connection with them, and their friendship blossomed from there.

Charles frequently joked about adopting Oscar, who humorously embraced the idea by calling himself Oscar Jack Piastri Verstappen Leclerc in Charles’s presence. Their friendship evolved into a quirky and chaotic dynamic, filled with inside jokes—like their ongoing debate over the best pizza toppings—and spontaneous adventures, which, in reality, were just trips to the closest restaurant the three of them could agree on and afford. 

Carlos was another group member, but Oscar felt the weight of his cold gaze whenever they crossed paths. At gatherings, while others laughed and shared stories, Carlos would linger at the edges, his arms crossed and lips pressed into a thin line. Oscar tried to engage him, offering a friendly smile or a casual joke, but Carlos’s responses were always curt, leaving Oscar unsure of where he stood.

After a few awkward exchanges, Oscar glanced around, searching for distractions as Carlos drifted toward the crowd that gathered around their most popular member. It was always the same: when the night drew to a close, Oscar would feel a chill as he caught Carlos’s eyes—sharp and unwavering—as he walked away, a question lingering in his mind: What had he done to earn such disdain?

And then there was Lando Norris, the infamous charmer of the group. Oscar had never managed to strike up a conversation with him; Lando always seemed to glide away, drawn in by the magnetic pull of someone new. Oscar often caught glimpses of him, laughter ringing like music, a circle of admirers forming around his easy charisma. He was an enigma, a bright smile lighting up the room, while Oscar remained on the fringes, watching.

Whenever Oscar observed Lando weaving through conversations, admiration and frustration churned in his gut. How effortlessly Lando connected with others, his laughter infectious, his gestures animated. Oscar felt a pang of envy as he imagined stepping into Lando's orbit, joining the lively exchange, sharing in the warmth of that smile. Yet, beneath that envy was a longing to be the one who captured Lando's attention, to draw him into a conversation that felt as natural as breathing.

Oscar wasn’t stupid. He knew he found Lando attractive, even if they had never spoken a word. That charming smile, those tousled brown curls, the mesmerizing swirl of colors in his eyes—what wasn’t there to find attractive? Yet, deep down, Oscar also understood that a connection between them was unlikely. Their lives felt like two parallel lines, never meant to intersect, each bound by different expectations and realities. Lando was everything Oscar wasn’t—spontaneous where Oscar was calculated, carefree where Oscar was guarded. At that moment, Oscar realized the gap between them wasn’t just a difference of personalities; it was something deeper, something he couldn’t bridge. The gnawing sensation twisted deeper inside him, a sinking weight that grew heavier with every passing second. He and Lando were simply too different, too far apart—two people destined to lead separate lives, never meant to cross paths. Oscar sank deeper into his thoughts, drowning in a sea of doubt, his eyes fixed on his half-empty cup, the remnants of a drink Logan had found for him before disappearing. The world around him seemed to fade, until a gapped-toothed smile and a familiar head of curls cut through the fog, yanking him back to the present.

2. Locklyle (Lucy and Lockwood from Lockwood & Co series by Jonathan Stroud) I love slow burn couples in book series where you see the characters evolve over the years and where the romance isn’t the main plot

3. Herongraystairs (Will Jem and Tessa from the the Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare) always thinking about them in some way shape or form I want a love like theirs

All these ships are my Roman Empire btw they all share the top spot there’s no ranking

4. Pip and Ravi from AGGGTM by Holly Jackson - badass intelligent talented girl x supportive funny guy who loves her like it’s breathing trope you will always have my heart (funny that seems to be a consistent pattern with these ships lol)

5. Malec (Magnus and Alec from the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare) yes I know they’re everyone’s favorite along with Herongraystairs I’m basic bla-bla-bla but have you considered that they’re popular bc they’re such a top tier ship? 9. Dorlene (Dorcas Meadowes and Marlene McKinnon from the Marauders fandom) I want to write a fic about them next. In my head they’re sooo imgonnagetyouback by Taylor Swift coded

Kanej (Kaz and Inej from Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo) soulmates in my opinion but not in the “they were destined for each other” SJM way but in a “their souls fit together like pieces of a puzzle and everything falls into place perfectly because their love is just so cosmically powerful, they weren’t destined for each other but they loved each other so much from now on they will meet and love each other in every lifetime” kind of way if that makes sense (same goes for all the ships here especially Herongraystairs)

11. Herondaisy (otherwise known as James and Cordelia from The Last Hours by Cassandra Clare) the unrequited lining the angst they’re just so perfect

12. Kitty (Kit and Ty from The Dark Artifices and soon to be The Wicked Powers main couple by Cassandra Clare) I love angst and pining and an excruciatingly long slow burn so you know I love Kit and Ty

13. Nick and Charlie from Heartstopper by Alice Oseman - it seems like your typical teenage love story but it’s actually so much more than that at the same time, I want what they have

20. Eva and Celeste from It Goes Like This by Miel Moreland - I highly recommend this book it’s abt a queer sapphic band who get broken up and now they come back together to perform one last time. The main couple, Eva and Celeste have such a beautiful story I don’t want to spoil anything

21. Teo and Aurelio from The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas - they got together too soon in the second book in my (very very biased towards excruciating slow burns) opinion but I loved them in the first book

22. Kit and Theo from The Pairing by Casey McQuiston - the fact that we have two Kits and two Teo/Theos on this list but in different ships (also two Wills) is kinda funny. I really loved their story and I want a love that’s so profound but also so fun like theirs.

23. Thomastair (Thomas and Alastair from The Last Hours by Cassandra Clare) I love them so much

24. Ghostwriter (Lucy and Jesse from The Last Hours by Cassandra Clare) they’re a big part of why Chain of Iron is one of my favorite TSC books but also their relationship conflict in CoT about not being able to kiss for a weird illogical reason was just not believable

25. Gracestopher (Grace and Christopher from The Last Hours by Cassandra Clare) some people ship them but in a platonic way some people ship them in a romantic way I understand both sides and honestly as long as we got to see the two of them develop a close bond based on love and trust it doesn’t entirely matter. Unfortunately CoT broke my heart

Ineffable Husbands (Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens) I watched Good Omens at the end of 2023 and read Good Omens the book at the start of January 2024 I still think of them from time to time and I’m not really up to date on s3 news but apparently s3 is going to be much shorter 😢 again that thing I said about loving excruciating angst and pining

27. Rosekiller (Evan Rosier and Barty Crouch jr from the Marauders fandom specifically in the fic “I’m not going to teach him to dance with you” by greensenne (not 100% sure I haven’t messed up the name of the fic but 100% sure that’s what the fic author is called if ever you want to check it out. It’s a no Voldemort AU with lots of Speak Now by Taylor Swift vibes) they’re Wolfstar but evil/morally gray Slytherins depending on the fic basically)

Ch.1. The girl

No lights, only moonlight.

Hyunwoo’s truck arrived at the same spot where the same loud, chaotic music was embracing the same careless people.

There was a mess all over the place: discarded empty plastic cups under messy bushes, snack’s empty bags that looked like they belonged to the previous century decorated every rock, big or small, and a few small, almost unnoticeable rubbers signaled someone had gotten lucky tonight… and if said luck was the good type there wouldn’t be any surprise in the following weeks.

Hyunwoo walked straight to the “big fire” as broke, drunk and stupid college students called the old trash can where the fire had been lit every Friday night to Sunday since everyone in that party could remember, it was usually fed with failed tests, old love letters and moldy leftovers, with the occasional pitch of weed to spice up the ambient.

You late. I thought you wouldn't come. - 

Hoseok, the hottest guy in the town, if you asked about the last stall in the guy’s bathroom where his name was just under Roseanne Park, nobody knew who did it, but it was a truth that couldn’t be denied. Therefore, nobody took it off either, offered Hyunwoo a cheap unopened beer and a cig.

Now my parents know I’m good at law stuff, but it’s hard to get rid of them. They expect me to be successful now. -

They both laughed; Hyunwoo’s parents owned a nice BBQ restaurant in the rich part of the town. It was nothing too glamorous, but it was still rich enough to keep him as a law major without asking him to work. That was kind of super well-off in a small town with only two supermarkets and a raggedy theatre.

Poor guy, can afford dreams, hopes and expectations. -

Hoseok was more of a regular person in the town; he was extremely handsome, but that was about it for his luck, no money, four siblings, not especially good at school and working part-time at one of the supermarkets to pay for his college. However, he’s been thinking about dropping off more than once now that his siblings are growing and showing skills at things. He may dream of being a model, but he could actually step down and provide real chances to others.

Let’s run away to Seul; you’d be a model, and I’ll be a family shame -

Both had been friends since they could remember, even though they were in pretty different life conditions. The town was small enough for people to cross their way into each other. They grew up together and went through thick and thin already; they’ve shared everything they could along the way: toys, emotions, resources and even girls.

Both were popular enough to have each their fair share of girlfriends, affairs and lovestruck, to the point of being called dangerous and unserious. Luckily, they weren’t girls, and their lives would've been way too difficult at that point.

The night grew old, and everyone got drunk, forgetting their problems. New couples were made, some broke up, and some swore eternal love. Hoseok found the love of his life, an unknown girl from a nearby town who’s probably using a fake name and won’t come back to his mind ever again.

Now Hyunwoo had too much beer, and nature was calling him, so he went to the far end of the party where there were more chances to find a couple doing funny stuff than to see your further away than your nose, found a lone three, undid his zipper and let himself go, eyes closed realizing he was dizzy. Now, his mouth had a bitter aftertaste of beer. He was annoyed and disgusted by everyone in the party, so he turned around, ready to leave, when he heard a gasping sound. It took him a few seconds to focus his eyesight, but then he saw her.

She was there: pale, thin, long black hair, looking almost like a ghost, but weirdly, the ghost looked scared. They both looked each other up and down, and she looked more scared than before. Did he forget to zip his pants? He checked he was fine.

Sorry is something-

NO! Sorry I didn’t see anything, bye, sorry -

She left so suddenly and pretty fast, too, it took him a few seconds to react and follow her, but when he did, she was already out of sight behind some tree or maybe jumped into a bush? Who could tell? Not him.

He let her go and went back to where he parked his truck. He should've followed her she could have been lost in the goods he hadn’t seen her before. Therefore she wasn't form here. 

He turned around, ready to look for her, but she was in the woods, and she wasn’t from here. She looked scared and ran off as soon as she had the chance. Was she doing something? Someone?

He returned to the path to his truck, but she was all dressed and looked pretty. Girls who do someones in the woods end up all messy and with missing clothes, maybe she was just lost

maybe she was.

alone? With someone?

Was she real? He was pretty drunk. Could someone have put something on the fire? He arrived late and didn’t start it himself.

He slapped his face hard, took a moment, entered his truck, started the engine and left; he’d check if Hoseok were still alive tomorrow. He was looking at ghosts and ready to throw up. It was time to go home.

You know what, "Leeb, Leefuh, Love" sounds like a pretty good sitcom name. I'm going to start naming whatever sitcom-fanfic this playthrough becomes—provided I don't chicken out of documenting This Thing out of cringe.

For starters, Metallica—the three angriest men of the year 2003—decided to move to some random house in Oasis Springs. Why? I don't know. Are they there to find a bassist? Dunno either.

Okay, maybe they aren't so angry.

In fact, James and Lars are coming along pretty well. Since there isn't a way in-game for them to start a thrash metal band, each members are doing mundane jobs!

Lars is a lawyer—looking at you, Napster—while James is an Entertainer, probably a comedian because why not. Kirk's getting a start in the Culinary career.

...Oh, yeah, the Welcome Wagon struck that household, too.

Johnny Zest made a fruitcake. I think they liked it—I can't recall what they thought of it... Kirk's social awkwardness begins to pop up, too, although advice from his totally-bandmates did help a bit.

And yes, that's Makoto Yuuki—from the popular PS2 video game Persona 3 FES—in the background. We'll bother about him in a bit. At least he gets along pretty well with the Metallica household, especially James.

Several hours later, Lars decided to become the new Skrillex, and played around with the music-making-table (I can't remember what they are called).

It's got about as much bass as ...And Justice For All, trust me.

Moving over to that place that the developers designed after the British countryside, not that I remember the world's name, the RBY household moved into a house. Weiss won't fit anywhere between the budding lovers Blake and Yang and the hyperfixative Ruby. She might get created at some point, just outside the hellhole.

So, yeah, there they are, living their lives in the moment.

This is probably my favorite screenshot of them, Blake probably being OOC be damned.

Also, most of the household seems to have fairly... memorable faces, especially Yang's psychotic expressions. I might compile them at some point in the future.

Anyways, so, jobs: Blake writes stuff. Yang is a cop—because I can, and I want her to be as silly as Martin Riggs; so she's stuck in a cop-aganda show. Ruby goes to high school, therefore she's stuck in some teenagers-do-stuff sitcom.

Oh, yeah, Ruby did go to high school, and I have some bits to document.

As pissed off because of some fear about unfulfilled dreams, she seems to have a thing for exercise. It's probably an excuse to offer you one of her goofy-looking faces, though.

But aside from that, everything went as normal, and Ruby managed to acquaint herself with Cassandra Goth.

That's good, I suppose. There were two other Sims that she managed to befriend, too, but I forgot their names. No, that Landgraab is not on the list—absolutely not, nuh-uh.

Also, later that day, she decided to bring Ruby to the Hijinks-and-other-things Festival. She went off to the art museum, while Ruby's left on her own. Noooo, that never happened before in the show Ruby was from! haha! But yeah, she joined the Pranksters—mainly because I wanted a silly laugh—but upon finding out that James Hetfield is there, I thought it'd be utterly hilarious for her to prank him.

So, that's one-half of a thing I'm doing, and I realized that I was capturing too many pictures for comfortable reading. Plus, the default Tumblr layout sucks for this kind of thing, and I have no clue how to code layouts, so... Yeah, the second half coming later on.

𝙨𝙪𝙢𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙮: ex-drummer of a band, ronan finds himself not knowing where to go, but when his aunt eleanor lethe invites him to haven springs, he says fuck it, and moves into the lethe flowers shop. he's excited yet scared for his fresh start as a trans guy in a small town. 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙨: 1.5k 𝙖/𝙣:keep watching lis true colours playthroughs and getting myself attached to ryan. i'm using this to dig myself out of a writing grave💀 had a very popular tumblr fanfic account almost two years ago.. i'm welcoming myself back woo! enjoy this because theres no ryan fics.

he watched the scenery go by, trying to fight the boredom, as his eyes almost shut. the trees, the mountains, the wildlife.. it wasn’t doing it for him anymore. after more than forty hours, it stops being as beautiful and intriguing as it once was.

the only thing actually distracting him from his lack of enthusiasm was his music. he did slight movements side to side. god he loved music, even moreso loved the violent femmes.

‘when i’m out walkin’, i strut my stuff man im so strung out’

‘i’m high as a kite, i just might stop to check you out’ instantly, he was infront of a crowd again, his air drumsticks became real ones and the crowd was cheering, bouncing up and down to the sound of his band. everyone seemed to be on a buzz, just enjoying themselves.

he missed that feeling, he missed performing with his band, but.. theres no way he could go back, especially with what happened his ex, aka the bassist.

he shook his head, and took his headphones off. ‘no reason to think about the past, when we’re constantly in the future’ he thought, continuing to look out the window.

he hoped in anticipation that he would arrive to his destination soon. the bus felt oddly cramped, even though there was only himself on it. maybe three stops ago the last people got off. young hipsters who reeked of marijuana.

suddenly, ronan was pulled out of his thoughts when the breaks of the bus were slammed, and his glasses were launched off his eyes. ‘jesus’ he thought, scrambling to pick them back up.

“sorry kid! these breaks are so unstable, got stuck at the last minute.”

“its uh, okay?” he replied, finally realizing where he was. it was a two day, six bus journey, but finally ronan arrived in haven springs. and thank fuck for that.

he grabbed his luggage, and began rolling it off the bus, sending a smile and wave to the bus driver. "have a good one!"

"you too! enjoy the small town culture." he said, before closing the doors and moving forward.

"wow.. a frest start." he hummed, looking forward to seeing his aunt eleanor, probably his only family member that wasn't deceased or estranged. he was lucky to have her as such a supportive person in his life.

she supported him when he came out as trans, then gay, when he dropped out of law school and focused on music instead, when he moved away from his biological mother and when he needed a place to stay. It was like this woman was his guardian angel.

now, he just needed to find where she was. She offered him one of the spare offices in the flower shop.

he started walking forwards, and his jaw dropped in awe, shocked at the beautiful stone bridge infront of him. It was decorated with beautiful flowers and vines.

it looks so different but the vibe is the same, he can remember being about five years old here, visiting his aunt for the weekend. he got to see the spring festival, play with some of the other kids here, he vaguely remembers a few people from here. crazy to think the last time he was here was in 2001.

he strolls along, making sure to take in every building, every person who glances at him.

unexpectedly, an arm was around him. He turns, seeing someone unfamiliar. "hi? do i know you?"

"no you do not." a girl with red glasses chuckles kindly. "but i know you! ronan, right? awesome to meet you."

"nice to meet you too.. random person." his eyes narrowed.

"oh my god, sorry!" she laughs. "i'm alex!"

"alex what are you-" another voice chims in. "oh, sick."

"anyways, i'm alex chen, this is steph, welcome to haven springs!"

"thanks." he rubbed the back of his neck, feeling so uncomfortable at the sudden social presence. alex grabbed onto stephs hand, and they took a step back together.

"sorry, we just don't get new people often. i understand how it feels to be bombarded with welcomes, i was the new person before you i guess." alex took a deep breath, thinking about her first day here, and everything that happened.

"eleanor posted about you arriving today, so don't be shocked if more people come up to you, i'll try to calm them down a bit. in the meantime, do you want us to guide you to eleanor's shop?" she offered.

"oh uh, sure!"

the walk was fairly silent, and it was only making things more awkward. "so.. tell me about the other townspeople?" he suggested, with a shrug of his shoulder.

"well there's not too many people are age, other than ryan, and uh hector." steph begins to whisper. "he uh, really likes his dog chrissy, one time he lost her and started listening to breakup songs."

"hey, i'd be sad too if i lost my dog.. maybe not breakup song sad but still!" he snickered. "also, riley's off to college right?"

"yeah, she's going to be visiting this summer though." alex adds in.

"i remember ryan, he's 3 years older than me, i remember his dad making him play dragons with me."

"that reminds me, are you all caught up with everything that's happened in the past two years?" alex questions, curiously.

ronan grimaces. "yeah, hard to miss on the news, even from a different state. i was thinking about saying something earlier but i didn't want to take down the mood. i'm really sorry for everything that happened to you alex, but you're so strong and i can't believe everything you uncovered."

alex pauses in her step and looks at ronans aura. it was a light blue tint. she breaths in, and out, not knowing what to say. steph notices, and takes over.

"we're here!" she announces. "eleanor will be somewhere in there, when you're done getting used to the town, there's a welcome party down at the black lantern for you."

he glances to alex, mouthing an apology, before smiling. "okay, i'll see you guys there, then?"

"yes you will." steph confirmed, before her and alex left towards the record shop.

'time to see eleanor' he thought, nervously. the one person that has always supported him. what if she doesn't feel the same as she once did?

he pushes the door handle, causing the bell to ring. "RONAN!" she exclaims, running towards the boy. "oh how i've missed you." the older woman hugs him tight. "i'm sorry for everything that's happened."

ronan exhaled shakily, trying not to get too emotional on his first day. "it's okay, it's all in the past now." he reassured her, not wanting to upset eleanor more.

she breaks away from him and gives a warming smile. "i'm so happy you're here. i had ryan help furnish your room, since i'm not used to decorating."

"oh? thank you." he smiled. "how is he? still a nerd about nature?"

"oh honey, he's a park ranger now." eleanor says, making the two giggle. "very into birds."

"i expected nothing less from him." ronan shrugs, beginning to walk around the shop.

eleanor pauses for a moment, before smiling again. "but he's a very great guy ya'know, he's looking forward to seeing you again."

"oh geez.." he mumbled, rubbing his hands together anxiously. hearing that made him nervous. 'he's looking forward to seeing you again.'

ronan only started transitioning 5 years ago, and came out 4 years ago. ryans version of him is much different then how he is now. it would be like meeting a completely different person.

"don't worry about anything okay darling? i didn't tell anyone that you were transgender other than people who knew you before. all i said on myblock was that my nephew was moving here."

"thank you eleanor, it really means a lot." he smiled.

"oh oh, i'm sorry, let me help you with those." she rolled one of the suitcases towards the back. "follow me when you're ready!"

ronan looked around at all the flowers and plants. there was lilies, roses, sunflowers, orchids and so many more. it smelled like natural perfume. he's always loved flowers, fantasized about getting them one day. he huffed, and rolled his eyes at his own thoughts, and took off towards the back.

he passed one closed door before seeing an open door, most likely his. he took a step in and was in awe, it looked perfect for his stay. it almost reminded him of his teenage bedroom, but if it was in a cottage. "i remember some of the bands you were messaging me about, so i thought what else would be better to put on the walls then posters."

ronan reached over and hugged her once more. "this is too much, im so grateful to have you, thank you."

"it's no problem dear." she smiled brightly. "here, i'll leave you to settle in, i'll be working just down the hall in the office. if you finish unpacking before the welcome party, don't feel shy, go explore and make friends!"

"i'll try." he sighed, as eleanor shut the bedroom door.

he stood for a moment, trying to catch his breath. 'finally.. peace and quiet'

ronan began unpacking his bags. he had two rolling suitcases, a duffle bag, and a tote bag. it was a lot of luggage to carry around on six buses but it was necessary. he also had some other items coming in the mail, like his drum kit and guitar.

he started with the first suitcase, pulling out essential items like toothpaste, toothbrush, menstrual products, a variety of soaps, some candles. then it started getting into the little nicknacks. some being stuff he picked up on his travels, others just things that have memories attached to them.

after putting his toiletries in the bathroom, and the nicknacks on the blank shelves above his desk and bed, he started sorting through his clothing. he put piles of clothes into the closet, and a few extra things into the drawers under his bed.

to say ronan was exhausted, was an understatement. he just traveled through four states in roughly two days, met a bunch of people on his way, and in haven, and had to unpack as his first chore.

he took off his glasses before he collapsed onto the bed, the comforter a dark navy plaid, with black sheets. "can't believe i'm back here after all this time." he breathed.

now he just has to get through the rest of the day, and he'll be fine. right?

The Danmei Series 01: Tf is Danmei?

Note: This is an effort to convert more unsuspecting fandom children into danmei because I need more people to talk to about this. Enjoy!

Danmei.

If you haven't heard of it before, HAHAHA, you are in for a ride.

Basically, Danmei is a Chinese fiction genre (the name directly translates to indulging in beauty)that features m/m relationships.

Mendi, isn't that just bl? Yes, but specifically Chinese.

Well, Mendi, what difference does that even make? It's all the same thing.

No. It is not.

...Okay, it is a little bit.

BUT, danmei is its own genre for a reason. China, just like any other country is rich in culture. I acknowledge this may be a bit biased, but I am overjoyed that Danmei is flourishing. But, anyway, let's talk about it.

If you have heard about Danmei media in the West, even just a little, It's pretty likely that you came across one of MXTX's works. MXTX or Mo Xiang Tong Xiu is the pseudonym for a popular Danmei author on Jin Jian Wen Xue Cheng (jjwxc) a popular web novel site(a whole lot of Danmei authors publish their work on this site).

MXTX has three novels, and if you hear about the MXTX fandom, it refers to the enjoyers of all three of her novels. These three works consist of Scum Villain's Self Saving System(svsss), The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation(aka Mo Dao Zu Shi, or mdzs), Heaven Official's Blessing(aka Tian Guan Ci Fu, or tgcf). The first of their works to become very popular was mdzs, which has several adaptations(basically any adaptation you can think of). If you were into cdramas at all around 2019, you might have heard of The Untamed. The majorly successful live-action adaptation of mdzs. Or maybe if you are in the anime/donghua community, you heard about the mdzs donghua adaptation. And if you were a fandom child who found Ao3 at the right time, you might know of "Sexy Times with WangXian" which broke Ao3 with the number of tags it had and forced Ao3 to have a tag limit, or a fanfic of the lead actors of The Untamed making Ao3 illegal in China.

Have I scared you? Sorry. Truly, the mdzs fandom is not as problematic as it sounds. I started my own Danmei journey with mdzs, and it holds a soft spot in my heart. I also have way too many opinions on the adaptations and how new viewers of mdzs should approach it to get the maximum emotional value, but that is a discussion for another time.

Anyway, Heaven Official's Blessing, also skyrocketed in popularity when it came out. It has its own donghua that you can find on Netflix with a fully English dub. As well as an extremely beautiful manhua and audiodrama. But of course, I encourage you to read the novels first, especialy because these adaptations are not finished, unlike mdzs.

Scum Villain is the heavily underrated middle child as far as adaptations go. It absolutely does not mean that it is bad. It isn't. I don't wanna get into the debate about how someone isn't a true mxtx fan if they haven't read it, and how it's so much better than the other books. I personally disagree with the last statement. I do also hold a lot of love for Scum Villain, Shen Qingqiu is one of my favorite MCs of all time, the premise is a lot more relatable than the other two, but it's pretty clear that svsss is Mxtx's oldest work. She has definitely been improving. Obviously. go read it, especially if you enjoy her other two works.

But, before you come at me for only talking about one author out of ALL the Danmei out there, I would like to point out that MXTX works are probably the most accessible in the West in regards to Danmeis. They were the first to get a full English translation and along with 2ha (The Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun, another very popular danmei written my an author under the name Meatbun), I was able to see them perching on their own little stand in Barnes and Noble.

So, you may have noticed something. I talk a lot about the web novels. maybe if you're into bl or yaoi, you will notice that a lot of those adaptations are in the form of graphic novels. Why is it that there is more emphasis on the actual novel? I know I know, why do these people want to make us actually just READ words instead of look at pretty pictures of pretty people. Disgusting. I understand your pain. I actually do not have anything largely conclusive to tell you why this is, but based on my observations here are two contributing factors: 1. it's easier to hide subtext, specific cue words, and satire in text media(I mean it's pretty clear when a character is desperately holding on to another character, yelling "My, love, when will you return," when you skim through a manhua, then if there are just a bunch of words), this also means its easier to hide from censorship; 2. the Chinese language itself is very poetic and if you have interacted with Chinese people, the number of references and idioms will drive you nuts as a language learner, in manhua form it can lose some of its humor and imagery, particularly with Danmei because a lot of the subject matter and the nature of the romances is kind of idealized and poetic; 3. Danmei is actually very plot-centric, the romance is often like a little cherry on top of the mounds of story, drama, and character, and so when you see even manhua or donghua adaptations of the stories, I would say that often quite a bit of the depth gets lost for the characters and the story, it's the same as what happens with a lot of blockbuster films. I'm sorry but book >>> movie almost every time.

Of course, there are options for you if you are stuck on graphic novel-style stories. Chinese manhua generally has a distinctly pretty and clean style. It does depend on the artist, obviously, but if you are a huge fan of pretty art, I tell you Manhua knows what's up, just give it a shot.

Anyway, all this yammering and I haven't talked about the actual content.

Many things set a lot of Danmei apart, content-wise. Chinese fiction has its own fantasy genres of wuxia and Xianxia. Wuxia, translating directly to martial hero, is a low fantasy genre that centers around martial arts in a historical au including sects, master-apprentice relationships, cool fights, etc. It has a lot less supernatural or magical elements, and instead often focuses on what is feasible with the human body alone. Xianxia on the other hand(translating directly to immortal Hero), can vary with very cool magic systems and worldbuilding based on Daoist and/or Buddhist influences. Xianxia is high fantasy and often includes supernatural themes, immortality, spiritual cultivation, etc. It may include mentions of the three realms. where you can ascend to godhood, haunt the mortal realms being unable to find the land of the dead, or go through the cycle of reincarnation.

Danmei can be based in some Chinese historical settings as well, separate from wuxia and can be from ancient times or during the more recent period of militant china, often with some emphasis on Peking opera.

Of course, Danmei has plenty of works set in contemporary or futuristic timelines as well that are similarly unique in their own way.(right now I just started Little Mushroom, and I really enjoy the futuristic worldbuilding so far)

Additionally, I mentioned before that Danmei is in fact very plot and character-centric.

Ha, yeah right, Mendi. Plot. The plot is romance, that is the genre, what plot could there possibly be.

Well. A whole lot.

I gave you a little taste with the mentions of some cool worldbuilding, but you will get a taste of insurmountable joy and boundless despair, reading some of this stuff. Many of your favorite tropes appear often, from enemies to lovers to pretty guys with long hair falling down cliffs(ok that is just an MXTX thing, I don't care if you think my taste is basic because i love MXTX, the stories are good). Also, you get a dose of east asian ideals and culture. For Asian Americans like me, it was very refreshing to feel somewhat understood in a way that I didn't see in Western media. The emphasis on family relationships, age hierarchies, reputation, and the way your asian aunties will gossip about you both right in front of you and behind you and have no sense of boundaries, and dramatic-ass idioms(iykyk). The way that these relationships are built is through the plot, and that is something I miss sometimes with a lot of the romances I've read. There are plenty of points of interest, from being do-gooders trying to be a good person and then getting roped into and wrongfully blamed for some elaborate scheme, or a hefty, intricate revenge plot based on some deep hatred and a not so healthy does of body horror. You will have a blast.

So, now that I have sold you on danmei content. Let's talk about another factor why you may not already be a Danmei enjoyer.

Danmei is enjoyed by many women in China and internationally, which also means there is a lot of controversy regarding the fetishization of m/m relationships. While I agree that this is a problem, I disagree that enjoying a gay romance is fetishization. it can be, but it more than often is not. Just like how I can enjoy a poetic, well-set-up, straight romance, I enjoy a lot of really beautiful Danmei stories in much the same way. For a lot of Chinese women, Danmei allows them to remove the societal constraints put on women in a relationship. it's a way of escapism, this might also be a reason as to why a lot of these romances are so poetic, even if tragic at times. Having the stigmatism of fetishization might push more heteronormativity into media. As long as you can enjoy the romance healthily, appreciating the characters as characters, and the plot as plot, and not specifically enjoy the fact that the relationship is between two gay men, you should be in the clear. The fact that some people are driven away from these stories because of the stigmas around boy's love saddens me. You don't have to be a connoisseur or anything, but if the sole reason you reject a piece of media is because it has a gay pairing in it, that is pretty homophobic. Although I will say, there is a difference between not wanting to read it because it's gay and not wanting to read it because you don't want to read smut. I understand some Danmei has smut, and some people aren't comfortable reading that, ok. But if you are intrigued by the premise, I would say just do your best to skip the smut scenes, if you really don't wanna, ok, but I think for things like smut, you can really get away with not reading it usually. Also if you think all danmei has smut, you are sorely mistaken. There are plenty of Danmei fics with no smut, and a lot of the adaptations sometimes don't even have real romance, which is sad, but if that is your concern, seriously don't. Also, in regards to censorship, if that is your issue. Unfortunately yes, it is an issue, but, there are plenty of options in the Danmei world, I'm certain you will find something.

Anyway, some of this is just my opinion, I am still actually relatively new to Danmei, I have read my fair share, but if this encouraged you to get into some Danmei, I have fulfilled my mission.

I will be back, probably talking about mdzs adaptations next time or some recs or working on some reviews, but I hope you enjoyed!

NOTE: About MXTX official translations, I have heard some mixed reviews. I, personally, read all three of the works as popular fan translations online, so I have not reread the full official translation. I have heard there are some distinct changes, including smushing some of the chapters together, which is something I am not sure about. it's unfortunate, but its only something to keep in mind. The novels should still be faithful to the original story.

Don't mind me as I panic because I'm literally scared of the shipping-side of fandoms in general (I've seen how people talk to each other on twitter when their ships don't align and, oh boy, I want nothing to do with that...) >.<'

But my ships are fairly popular aside from one... I guess? I have three I like. Just to give a specific number. And while I don't read or write ship fanfics, since I prefer x Reader, I do like to look at fanart occasionally.

Zhongli x Guizhong

I've shipped them pretty much since I started playing the game in 2021. I got super invested into Zhongli's lore and eventually came across her name. Then I started digging deeper into her lore and theories about her and fell in love with her and the ship.

I suppose this is something of a niche ship? Especially now with the new Lantern Rite where GuiPing seems to have overtaken it. And I've already seen people attacked over shipping GuiLi because of that too on twt now... cause apparently it's homophobic to ship them now? Idk... make it make sense. This is why I usually stay out of this.

2. Cyno x Tighnari

These two... I swear Sumeru has changed me somehow because as I stated in prior asks: I'm usually not into shipping characters so whenever I start liking two characters I have a sort of "denial stage" at first where I'm like "nah, I don't ship them... or maybe... no.... yes?".

And at first I was like "yeah they're best friends, whatever"... then I saw more and more fanart and was like "yeah, you know what, they're kinda cute." and eventually fanart converted me into shipping them. So, good job fanartists - the domestic and cuddly scenarios you put them in made me cave 👌🏻

And lastly...

3. Alhaitham x Kaveh

This one also seems to be quite popular and I basically just got past the above mentioned denial stage, haha! 😂

I have to admit I couldn't stand Kaveh at all at first, he seemed like a handful and I was like "yeah, they'd never get along in a million years, especially not as a couple."

Then I played Haitham's story quest and saw the interaction with Kaveh... then I saw more fanart again. Then [insert denial stage here] and I guess I'm now at the point where I can say, yeah... I like them and I also like Kaveh now... he is just such a kindhearted soul (even if he is a bit eccentric, I suppose).

Good job fanartists, once again 🤝🏻

So yeah, that is all of them.

I want to mention that I am really lost when it comes to shipping terminology and I also don't really want to get involved in all that stuff. It's all a bit too stressful for me.

I do want to draw fanart of these ships but I'm a bit too scared to do so and only drew things that could be interpreted as both ship or platonic (they're posted on my art blog, I'll keep this blog clear of that). Because I've seen how vile shippers get towards other ships at times when they don't like the portrayed one... instead of - you know - ignoring it??? Especially on twt.

And don't get me started on some "rules" people have put up for shipping. Like, just let me have the idea of two fictional characters being all lovey-dovey. If it makes me or anyone else happy, who cares? (as long as it isn't problematic ships ofc...)

I never intend to write ship fanfic however since that is something I also don't enjoy consuming myself. I always preferred self-insert 🤷🏻‍♀️

Various WWF Wrestlers/Jack Tripper x Fem Reader- "There's Something In My Trousers"

I need to be honest with you guys...even though "Monday Night Raw" may be the most famous and popular WWE/F wrestling show and always has been, I get really tired of typing fanfics that read "On a 'Monday Night Raw' episode".

I'm aware a few of these professional wrestlers like Shawn Michaels and Hunter Hearst Helmsley weren't on "Shotgun Saturday Night", "WWF New York", and "Friday Night's Main Event".

For those about to read this fanfiction, you can either choose to read about World Wrestling Federation wrestlers or Jack Tripper from "Three's Company", or both.

On a "WWF New York" episode in November of 1997, there was a moment in this episode where you were standing in the locker room with various male professional wrestlers.

These various male pro wrestlers were Shawn Michaels, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Jeff Hardy, Sean Morley (who would become Val Venis next year) and Christian Cage.

These men were the sexiest men in the WWF at the end of 1997 (along with a few others), that's why they're all in this locker room together with you and not Legion of Doom 2000 and the Headbangers, yuck.

You weren't in the women's locker room, but instead the men's locker room.

Shawn and Triple H were both sitting on the same bench together, whereas Christian Cage and Jeff Hardy were resting and pressing their backs on the lockers while Sean Morley pressed his back on the wall as he stood up.

If it's Jack Tripper you want...

During a "Three's Company" episode in the late 1970's and early 1980's, there was a scene in this episode where you were standing in Jack's bedroom while Jack was sitting on the bed he usually sleeps in.

As these wrestlers slid their tights down their legs, the camera was filming them above their stomachs and waists to imply that they weren't wearing underwear under their tights, which they weren't.  

"That feels so good" Shawn/Jack moaned when his pants/tights were placed around their ankles, and Triple H, Christian, Jeff and Sean agreed, nodding their heads and Triple H replied "I know, right?".

One of Shawn's and Triple H's hands were at their crotches, where their hand and arm looked like it was masturbating, which was implied to the viewers watching this.

Shawn and Triple H were filmed above their stomachs while their hands looked like they were masturbating their dicks.

another nice-ish week. school starts on august 9th. i'm kind of sad, but at least i'll see some friends. i just don't want to do any school work. i still want good grades, of course, just.. without doing anything i guess.

my friend & i started a baking goal a few days ago. we were baking cookies and then his little sister came into the kitchen and asked if she could watch a movie with us. (she's eight.) and we said yes, we ended up eating all the cookies in three days, so we decided to bake again. we baked the famous pinterest jelly tart cookies. they came out pretty good, i almost burnt them because he went to shower and i started reading. but he got out soon enough and then went to check on them and they almost burnt. they're good though, i wish i could give you one right now for staying this look just to read <3 🍪

i spent a bit of today cleaning my room again. only vacuuming & organizing my closet, for almost the third time this month. and then i started reading another book i bought, it's called 'if he had been with me'. i saw it online & in a bookshop when i was in ontario for the summer, so i bought it! a lot of people say it's a little overrated, (not judging by the cover but by the actual book) and of course i saw it. i wanted to buy it anyway because it wasn't available at the library. also i've been writing a little bit of my own novel ideas. it think i might actually publish something, (hopefully if the KOSA bill doesn't progress.) on wattpad. not much of a fanfic although that's really the most popular side of wattpad. maybe. i'm really fond of writing a story that may reflect my dream life. you know..? like a good main plot with my dream lifestyle? don't know if it's a good idea though considering i just created this blog.

oh also, i've just started watching stranger things 4 !! i love the show up until now, but i've heard that vol. 2 could've been better. not sure, i just started episode one with my father on wednesday. i hope its not a weird season with a lot more people dying.

oh! speaking of which, i'm thinking of taking bass lessons soon. and maybe piano too. i've really wanted to play both for a while. he knows how to play bass, piano, drums, pretty much anything. he can make a tune out of recordings of every instrument and then he can make a nice instrumental song. he makes good poems so sometimes i tell him to make songs but he doesn't usually. he's making one now actually! i finally convinced him with elliot (his little sister) that he should write a song. so i think he's writing a song, maybe it's a love song for his crush. like i dunno but that could def be a reason why he's hiding it from us. otherwise he's pretty open about music and stuff.

him & i also went to a bakery in town. it was a bit close to the hotel his family & my family were staying at. (family friends trip, chill nothing weird.) so it was nice to go out and feel the night breeze. especially since i haven't been leaving the house much after being gone to ontario for an hour. we went shopping and i bought a cute cream colored mug with brown paint splattered on it, and a cute little baby tee that said gilmore on it !!

we went out to a cute bakery and had pastries and tea. we also bought candy from there for our sisters. mine's twelve and his is eight, but my sister's still pretty immature. they get along really nicely. his sister likes dolls, and my sister likes fixing dolls up. that's not whats immature about her, she genuinely acts five, but she loves dolls, and miniatures and making jewelry which i adore for her. if she's happy, i'm happy. in the end we both bought chocolate covered peppermint sticks with sprinkles. i think it was called lazy dog chocolateria. really great place, the food was sososososoo yummy.

why aren't lesbians more popular in fanfiction?

hello literally no one asked for this but i feel like i’ve seen a lot of discussion about the disparity between mlm and wlw fanfiction, and i simply. have thoughts about it lol. this is mostly focused on marauders fanfic bc that’s really the only fanfic community i’m plugged into, but i feel like it probably applies to others as well -- this is definitely gonna get long so if u don’t feel like reading a lil essay abt it then just scroll past :) 

anyway! i do think the prevalence of gay ships in fanfic is a particularly interesting conundrum given that the vast majority of people who read + write fanfiction are women -- and, particularly in the marauders fandom, i’d guess that the majority of those women are queer. so i guess the question i find interesting can be boiled down to: why do so many gay women gravitate towards stories about gay men?

generally, i tend to see a mixture of three answers in conversations about this question.

1. there’s more canon info about male characters

essentially, i see a lot of people say something along the lines of, “well, it makes sense that there’s more fanfiction written about men, because in the stories these characters are originally from the male characters are main characters/much more developed than female characters.” and i think this answer makes sense, but i don’t necessarily think it’s a sufficient explanation on its own for two reasons:

fanfiction can branch quite drastically away from canon, and there are plenty of popular fics where canon is completely disregarded. even if writers have very little canon information about a character, that doesn’t necessarily mean the character won’t be loved in fandom spaces. which leads to the second reason...

in the marauders fandom specifically, male characters with almost no canon information have become very popular. i feel like i’ve especially seen this more recently with characters like barty crouch jr. and evan rosier, but even some of the bigger marauders characters -- peter, regulus, etc -- have very little information about their actual characters in canon. additionally, there are characters like lily evans, narcissa malfoy, andromeda tonks, etc, who, if we’re going based on the amount of canon information, seem like they should be more popular. 

however, none of this is to say that certain characters should be more or less popular--this is just to point out that i don’t think “there’s more canon information” is a sufficient explanation on its own for why mlm fics are so much more popular than wlw fics. i certainly think it accounts for some of the disparity, but i also think there’s more going on!

2. “fetishization” of gay men

i’ve also seen a lot of people throw out the answer that “it’s because women are fetishizing gay men,” and i...just don’t really think this is the issue that some people say it is. honestly, i think that in most of the cases where i’ve seen people saying this, the term fetishization is being misused. in the marauders fandom, at least, i’d argue that the vast majority of fanfiction is not fetishizing gay men, in that it isn’t reducing gay men to sex objects--in fact, i think that oftentimes the opposite is true. even in heavily explicit fanfiction, the characters are often built out as well-rounded people, and there’s almost always an equal emphasis on the relationship and emotional dynamic between the two characters being shipped together. 

i think when people talk about the fetishization of mlm couples, a lot of times the person they’re arguing about is this imaginary cishet woman who’s like foaming at the mouth to read about gay men fucking each other while simultaneously not really viewing gay men as real, complex people--and sure, maybe there are some women like that. but something that i think this straightforward answer of “fetishization” misses is that there is fanfiction catered specifically to straight women, and it often looks very different from queer fanfic. like, i can almost always tell when i’m reading fanfic whether it was written by a straight woman or not, because heterosexual desire and queer desire manifest in very different ways. and my impression is that the majority of queer fanfic is catered towards other queer people--even if straight women read it, too, i don’t really think they’re the main audience. i haven’t tried to research statistics on this or anything; it’s all just based on my impression of this one specific fandom space, and i’m not trying to claim otherwise. but in the marauders fandom, at least, it seems as though the majority of the readers are queer women; in fact, many writers, like myself, are actually lesbians who literally hold zero attraction to men. so why do we still love reading and writing about gay relationships?

3. *vague hand-waving* misogyny 

once we get past these first two explanations, i typically see people saying something along the lines of, “well, of course mlm fics are more popular than wlw fics, because of misogyny!” and then just...leaving it at that. and it sort of drives me a little insane, because i’m always like, yes, but WHY??? that’s like someone asking why the sky is blue, and answering, “well, because of science.” like--okay, yes, but WHAT science? why?? what’s actually happening??

so, if you’ve made it this far into my little esay, here are some thoughts that have been marinating in my brain about some specific ways in which misogyny effects the popularity of gay vs lesbian fanfiction (and, in some ways, gay vs lesbian media more generally). essentially, there are two big things that it boils down to, in my mind:

the inherent alientation of womanhood

the universality of queer desire

and those two things kinda play off each other, but i’m gonnna take them one by one!

1. womanhood as a process of alienation

so, this is something that i’ve been turning over in my mind over the past few months. generally, i try to avoid broad generalizations about women/womanhood, because i think of gender much more as a socialized series of performances rather than any kind of fixed identity category, however! that being said, i do think that womanhood is, in many ways and for a majority of people, a gradual and unrelenting process of alienation from one’s own body, sexuality, and desires. 

what i mean by that is that in a patriarchal society, becoming a woman means being taught constantly and consistently that you are meant to center men in your life (which is one reason that so many lesbians have such a complicated relationship to gender--because removing men from the equation essentially knocks out one of the pillars propping up “woman” as a gender category). teaching someone to be a woman means teaching them to ignore and suppress their own sexuality, physicality, and desires in favor of men’s. i think many people raised to be women learn to think of their own sexuality as an object of male desire; we are told that we should want to be wanted, but not that we should want. learning to be a woman oftentimes means learning to separate yourself from your own desires--women aren’t supposed to be hungry, or messy, or loud, or ugly, or ambitious, or sexual.

obviously, everyone raised in a misogynistic society internalizes that misogyny; so i think that for most people taught to be women, there’s this shared experience of alienation from your own body. we are systematically and purposely cut off from lesbian desire, from sapphic desire--from any kind of desire or sexuality where men are not a focal point. this makes it understandably difficult to envision rich, complex, sexual and romantic relationships between women, because anyone taught to be a woman has to spend a significant amount of time unlearning internalized misogyny in order to truly embrace queer desire.

so, yes; i think that mlm fics and gay ships are more popular at least in part because of misogyny. but i don’t think it’s this conscious, purposeful thing that queer women should be condemned for--in many ways, i think that gay fanfiction actually provides queer women (especially young queer women) a space to explore queer relationships and queer desire outside of the patriarchy that hangs like a specter over any relationship involving women. for queer women who are still working through internalized misogyny, who still struggle to envision romantic and sexual relationships between women that exist outside the bounds of patriarchal narratives, i think it’s understandable that gay relationships in fanfiction have become this sort of refuge. we are taught to center male desire and sexuality; we experience queer desire that we must learn to stop suppressing; when we look at these two ideas together, i don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that the exploration of gay relationships in fanfiction is oftentimes a way for queer women to explore their own sapphic desire.

2. the universality of queer desire    

this first point leads me directly into my second, which is that gay fanfiction can oftentimes provide a space to explore lesbian desire specifically because queer desire has a unique sort of universality--it is outside the boundaries of cishet norms and narratives, which often leads to different expressions of desire and different relationship dynamics. for example, as a lesbian, i feel that my lesbian relationships generally have much more in common with gay relationships than they do with straight women, simply because the dynamics of typical heterosexual relationships are so far removed from my own experiences with sex, romance, and dating.   

something that strikes me is that, in many instances, these fanfictions about gay men read to me, a lesbian, as lesbian romances--i find myself reading about these characters and thinking that the way they relate to one another, the way they process emotion, etc, feels very much like a lesbian relationship. i think part of that is because many of them are written by queer women, but it’s also because of this overarching universality of queer desire.

anyway, i don’t really have a final point or conclusion that i set out to make with this. i guess i just think it would be nice to move the conversation a little further past “wlw fics are less popular because of misogyny!”, y’know? at the end of the day, i don’t think it’s inherently harmful that mlm fics/ships/media are so popular in queer spaces, and more often than not i think it’s actually an important medium for all kinds of queer people to explore desire + sexuality + gender + relationships through stories written by other queer people. however, i do think it simultaneously calls attention to the ways in which internalized misogyny and compulsory heternormativity can make it very, very difficult for people to envision lesbian desire and lesbian relationships, and i do think it’s important to like...do some soul-searching, y’know? like, just on an individual level, especially if you’re a queer person, and especially if you’re a queer woman--if you struggle to get into wlw fics/media the way you get into mlm fics/media, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong, and it doesn’t make you a bad person, but it does mean that you should probably take some time to think about why that might be! what kinds of things did you learn to internalize that might be preventing you from embracing lesbian/sapphic/wlw (whatever u wanna call it) desire? and i say this as someone who had to spend years coming to terms with their own lesbian desire, who knows how difficult it can be to work through the layers of internalized misogyny, internalized homophobia, and compulsory heterosexuality. but at the end of the day, a lot of this fanfiction we’re reading is all tied together by the same elements of queer desire <3 

this is by no means meant to be a comprehensive or even particularly academic analysis of the situation--i’ve just been thinking about these questions a lot lately and wanted to write down some thoughts to help me organize them. if u actually took the time to read all of this and have any thoughts or ideas to share i am clearly dying to discuss + my dms + ask box are always open :)

What I like a lot while plotting potterlock is the concepts that I can develop further than what had happened in the original plots (duh, the beauty of fanfic)

For example, for my johnlock timeline (1980s) I was inspired by the Marauders dynamic, but of course I spiced it up a notch because I can. There were 4 Marauders, but for the johnlock crew in my fic there is going to be 7 people involved. Let’s list them:

John Watson (Gryffindor)

Sherlock Holmes (Ravenclaw)

Greg Lestrade (Hufflepuff)

Jim Moriarty (Gryffindor - there is a reason for this that is yet to be shown)

Carl Powers (Gryffindor)

Molly Hooper (Ravenclaw)

Mary Morstan (Slytherin)

Now while there is an obvious imbalance between the members of the Houses, the crew dynamics will be important. Mary is not very popular because of the bbc Sherlock canon (which I allign with too, and I like evil Mary plots, but I challenged myself to write her differently here, which means that she will not interfere with John and Sherlock as a potential romantic interest just because she is a girl). I made her a Slytherin because, well, she is. And I love her to death in this fic. More on that later.

Next, Carl Powers and Jim Moriarty. Jim’s Gryffindor arc will remain unveiled for now, but I really wanted to include Carl Powers beside being dead. And I like to have them established as close friends before joining J&S&G. They both have things to offer to the Detective Trio, and will contribute to their developments too (especially Sherlock’s, because we know how he is regarding ‘friends’). 

Molly Hooper is a sweetheart. She also is not going to pose as this infatuated fragile girl to the boys. While she is lovely and definitely interested in dating, it’s not with the main trio because?? Girl knows her worth. She befriends Sherlock in Year 1, but that is an added detail to that chapter which I will keep secret until it is updated. (which I dunno when it is pls dont kill meh) She a great friend, supportive, and all around smarter than Sherlock in certain situations. These two Ravenclaws will have a great friendship. Once Sherlock stops being so aloof he’ll take her as his little sister most likely.

Greg Lestrade. My man. We could argue he could be a Gryffindor but nah fam. My boy here is a pure Hufflepuff who puts up with the fiery egos of his two best friends with ease. There is a lot of clashing in this group at first. You have three Gryffindors who are not afraid to butt heads (respectfully if needed), a smartass Ravenclaw that has no filter, a second Ravenclaw that likes to watch the chaos as long as nobody gets hurt... Someone needs to keep them in line. And that someone is Greg. Does it tire him? Yes. Does he care? Eh, he got used to it. He and Mary will get along well. The biggest theme in my fic is to destigmatize that awful Slytherin-Gryffindor rivalry. Mary is chill. Slytherpuff duo of Common Sense. Are they wary of each other at first? Yeah, but the point is that they ignore the surface-level House bullshit and grow over first impressions. 

John and Sherlock, dudes. You know the drill. They’re the core members, but they are in for a whooping. They cannot be in a bubble, even if they’re the other pair of the protagonists. They both have to cooperate with others to grow as people. And what better way to do it than to put them into a crew that fucks shit up? I’d like to develop this thought but that would contain spoilers, and I have to remind myself that I havenpt update in... an abominable amount of time. So I’m making up with this post lol. 

Now, the name of the crew. - I don’t know

The main trio that is John, Sherlock, and Greg I have already titled the Detective Trio. But the whole crew of 7... Lucky Seven? Oh, that actually isn’t bad and will correlate with the later plot development in the 1997 timeline... I’m a genius

I think Lucky Seven can be the shield name for now anyway, hah

You know, I'm saddened by the lack of popularity Romione has compared to Dramione. Why does Dramione have more smut arts than Romione?

Hm, I guess I can't answer why Dramione has more smutty art than Romione. But one thing that comes to mind is that probably the Dramione side of the fandom is more supportive of their content creators (namely artists and writers) than Romione folks.

Don't be afraid, anon. My following observations are not an angry response to your ask (your ask was totally fine), but something I realised since I actively joined the fandom. This might become a longer post, so I'll put the rest under a read-more line. For the Dramione (multi-) shippers following me, you can safely read the rest. I'll not compare ships or anything.

This will be actually a post about how to create a safe and satisfying fandom experience for yourself and for others.

Since I joined the fandom (here on Tumblr) I went through a learning process. I joined because I discovered my old Romione/Ron Weasley love and wanted to read fanfiction about them again, discover fanart and interact with other fandom folks.

I started with Facebook Fanfiction groups and was immediately disappointed with 1) the lack of Romione/Ron Weasley content and 2) the full on Weasley hate and super toxic posts of one particular group there. I was not just disappointed, I was positively devastated. But then I thought "This can't be it? There surely have to be people who don't think like that?" I googled a little and stumbled upon some Tumblr posts and remembered fanfic writers mentioning Tumblr on their A/N.

I joined Tumblr at the beginning of 2020, so not that long ago. I'm well aware that Tumblr has its problems. That was obvious for me from the beginning. But what I loved and still love about Tumblr is the possibility to exclude tags (I'll talk about this later). And so I followed different blogs, found other blogs, and got to know some amazing and talented people along the way.

I got back into writing again. I read a ton of fanfiction, mainly Romione. And I had some great discussions about my favorite characters and ships. And over time, I've noticed something. Because to me it seems that the Romione fandom isn't super good at telling creators how much their work is valued.

The thing is, we are all the captain of our ship(s). We're responsible for our own fandom experience and here are some pointers how you get more of the content you want (especially if you can't or don't want to create it yourself).

Tumblr

Follow blogs which post and reblog content you like

Find fanart, stories, meta, etc. about your favorite characters and ships

Exclude tags with all the ships you don't want anything to see or read about or topics you don't want to see on your dashboard. You can do that in the settings

The most important thing on Tumblr: REBLOG, REBLOG, REBLOG. Please don't just like a post. Reblog it! Tumblr doesn't work like other social media platforms. Reblogging is key here and the way for creators to reach more people.

Specifically for Romione: there are three fests that I know of which focus on this pairing and I encourage you to check out the created content and REBLOG it. @romioneficfest, @romioneweek and @romione-trope-fest are the blogs which host these events. The @chudleycanonficfest also had a lot of great Romione fanworks.

AO3

The Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley tag on AO3 is a real pain to go through if you don't exclude a ton of tags. And even if you exclude 'Ron Weasley Bashing' etc., you'll have a hard time finding an actual Romione story. A sure way to get a ton of Romione stories is the HPRomione Discord server. There are a lot of writers there and readers recommend stories in an extra channel. I also recommend to follow @folk-melody and go through their story rec posts.

Leave Kudos for the stories you enjoy AND comment. No matter how old the story, no matter how many comments the story already has, no matter if the author orphaned their account, please leave a comment. Even if the authors themselves don't read the comments or write anymore, it's always good to leave a comment because it improves visibility. Others might read the story because of your comment.

Recommend the stories to others. Here on Tumblr or wherever else you're active

You can create a bookmark. Add tags and maybe add a little text what you liked about the fic.

If you didn't like the characterization of the characters or the plot in general, please chose not to comment at all. Just close the tab and move on to a story you enjoy. Because what could you possibly achieve with a mean comment? Nothing, absolutely nothing

Considering FB groups and other fandom communities: leave if it makes you feel bad. Don't look at numbers of other pairings and try to make sure to be motivating and supporting of the artists/writers.

Our support is what shapes every fandom and we can be an active part in it.

hiii! tysm for leaving such sweet tags on part 2 the yukari/ryoji hcs list, i had so much fun reading through those :) im flattered you still remember part 1 considering it’s been six months & i had pt2 in my drafts for ages but i thought of you while writing it; it’s getting comments like yours that keeps me going <3 it took me a while to upload since ive wanted to add onto it—i can’t get enough of those two—but ig i can always do that in a part 3. or a fanfic…? point is, the popular girl dealing with her bestie’s weird-ass boyfriend driving her up a wall is always my jam, especially when she ends up lowkey being in on his BS with him (much to the shock of the whole school) while the MC’s like “maybe i liked you two better when you hated each other” loool

HII HII mimi thank you so much for stopping by to the ask box!!! it's always a lot of fun for me to leave tags when i come across posts that i enjoy- especially ones related to writing! hcs and aus are always such a joy for me to read, especially if it involves ryoji 😳

honestly, the yukari and ryoji friendship hcs have very much been living rent free in my mind since i saw that first post about them playing minecraft together! they'd float across my brain at least once or twice a month and i'd go "YEAHH THIS IS WHAT THEY DESERVE!"

so in that respect, im flattered to hear that you thought of me while writing the second part- and if you ever consider writing more for them (fic or hc list form, or any medium really, shitposts are also included in that LOL), im always down to see it! 👀

but YESS that friendship dynamic... literally chef's kiss tbh. i love unlikely combos of friends and i think yukari and ryoji represent that rather well! its nice thinking that over time, yukari can warm up to ryoji's silly antics (i am sure he has an infinite amount of them, lmao). plus, i feel that yukari can show ryoji a lot of cool things as well, whether if it's her perspective from being popular, or just some hobbies that she's into!

and i think it's especially funny that you added the MC to the mix too in that last remark... must be weird for minato or hamuko to observe yukari laughing with ryoji over something stupid rather than yukari being like >:c or something at him 😂 (i'm terrible at words help!). in any case i am sure that all three of them are getting along great!

ANYWAYS i uh. did not mean to take this long to respond to this ask nor did i mean to make it very long but i guess that's what happens when i want to express my gratitude back and acknowledge asks properly, haha. but seriously, thank you again mimi, not just for the inbox visit, but the hcs! it's always a pleasant surprise to see whatever people are up to in the p3 fandom and i appreciate the yukari and ryoji hcs very much~ (and have a very lovely day!!)
