I don't ship them, but there is some romantic component to their dynamic although it's not enough to classify them this way. They're not exactly enemies or colleges too. I don't want them together or anything, but I just want their relationships explored in their complexity. What would such type of relationships be called? If I wanted to read something like that, what would be the tag?

I mean, I understand where they're coming from--I also would like to conduct my life without reference to gender--but every time the subject comes up, I remember how in middle school this one Black kid, who was kind of a class cutup, announced one day that he wanted to go by a nickname which also happens to be a racial slur. (A semi-obscure one, not the N-word, if it matters. I don't think I need to say what it was for the story to make sense.)

And our white teacher was like, "No, if that's what you want your friends to call you, that's your business, but as a teacher I cannot call you that, because to anyone who doesn't know that's what you wanted, I'm calling a student a racial slur, and I'll get fired."

Which, you know.

I work in education now too, and if I ever have a student tell me it goes by it/its pronouns, my plan is to go directly to HR, ask them what they want me to do, and not leave until they put it in writing. Then I'm going to follow those instructions to the letter--and probably carry around a copy in my wallet.

Because I don't want to go viral as "the teacher who called a trans student 'it.'"

It's fine if you want your friends to call you that, but if you ask someone in a position of authority or a public figure--someone who could get fired/cancelled for calling you what most people consider a slur--then I'm sorry, but you're putting them in a very difficult position.

Saw people talking about not liking first person, which is fair, but their reasoning was like "I would not do that" and I don't understand that mindset.

First person stories are still about a character. A character making their own decisions. First person isn't about you???? At least I thought it wasn't. What am I missing? I've always seen first person as just a more in-depth look into a character's mind and stricter POV. Not as a reader stand-in.
