GOD yeah it's p straightforward although I KNOOOOW I'm red stringing yall don't even have to tell me but. hey diddle was recorded in 1970 & not released until 2001, though it was re-recorded during venus & mars. which already follows this pattern paul has of his more vulnerable songs not appearing when they were written/recorded and only released later (see: best friend)

and anywayyyyy these are the lyrics:

very simple and repetitive song about missing someone and it wouldn't drive me so absolutely batshit insane if it weren't for the last lines

"I wouldn't make her, her wooden table, I wouldn't care"

and I was Trying to find the damn quote bc it's somewhere on my blog but after a bit of looking I can't find it rn so if anyone has it lmk, but there's a quote where paul (or maybe it was linda? but I think it was paul himself) talks about the fact that when him, linda, heather, and mary first moved up to scotland (around the time he would've been writing this song), he was trying to be real self-sufficient and rugged and whatnot and build all their furniture by hand. including tables and shit.

and like YEAH ofc it could mean absolutely nothing and just be a sweet little country sounding song! but in the context of it being one he kept off ram, then kept off venus & mars, then only released long after john had died.... and then the lyrics themselves being like "I want you back and (implication being) if you came back I wouldn't care about making her her wooden table", written at the time he was making linda and their family furniture and actively grieving and missing john/the beatles.......... it just makes me go 😐
