Some season 4 thoughts!
Not gonna lie, while I really liked a lot of the character moments, twists, and jokes from this season but some parts of the plot... didn't really make sense to me.
Something interesting to me is that in every season but this one, it's always established 1) why the police can't be trusted to investigate the murder and 2) why Charles, Oliver, and Mabel are making a podcast about it. It's used as set up for why the audience should root for them. In season 1, the police think its a suicide so the close the case. Oliver needs the money from the podcast, Charles is lonely, and Mabel has a personal stake in the mystery. In season 2, the police think its the trio. They make the podcast to prove to the public that they're innocent so they can move on with their lives. In season 3, the police arrest the wrong guy and close the case. Mabel drops the first episode to exonerate the guy and get him out of jail. In this season, its specifically stated that the feds are investigating, and while the trio has a reason to look into what happened, they don't have a reason to record and release a podcast about it (other than force of habit). In fact they have good reason not to do that: their first theory is that it was a case of mistaken identity and Charles was the intended target. If they think the danger isn't over, it would be ridiculously irresponsible to tell the public (and potentially the killer) where they are in the case.
Charles' and Oliver's story arcs were great! I especially liked Charles learning to open up about his feelings, and coming to terms with Sazz's death, it was really sad yet heartwarming. But! Mabel's arc is kind of baffling to me. I was really glad to see season 4 set up her developing her career, but it kind of felt like it petered out at the end? What was the point of setting up Animal Jobs and Mabel feeling bad about using Howard like a disposable lackey if they were going to go on to forget about the whole thing and treat Howard the exact same way? Mabel learned to see herself as a podcast producer, she flexed her creative muscles and started drawing again, but at the end of the season, she says that she doesn't belong in the entertainment industry??? She was inspired to make something of herself using her life rights money but the story she pitched to Bev Melon at the end of ep 10 is very clearly just season 4 of the omitb podcast- something she already had the means to do! (I will say, Bev's second phone call implies that this storyline may not be over, so I'm fully prepared to eat these words after season 5)
The trio's danger handling skills are so weird? When they realize someone is watching them they rush out of the Arconia in a panic. Some people call them out for not noticing loose ends. They come back to confront the supposed culprits and find out actually, they weren't responsible for the cameras at all. And so, still not knowing who it was and whether its safe to do so, they fully drop the issue and go right back on to live there? (This plot line might also be brought up again, so idk, if they can come up with a good explanation for why they did this, then fine)
I think it's super fun that Sazz was investigating things all on her own. It reminds me of that joke from season one where Jan complains that the trio trust Sazz, who randomly showed up, to investigate, but not Jan herself, who was Charles' girlfriend and Oliver says something like "Sazz is a stunt double, so I think she knows what she's talking about!" But I think it's so out of left field that Sazz is a really good screenwriter. Sazz is an extremely successful stunt double who comes from a family of stunt doubles and dreams of opening a school for young stunt doubles. Why is she writing rpf so good that on her first try it's blockbuster-movie-with-famous-celebrities worthy? It feels kind of unfair to the audience... If random characters can secretly be insanely skilled at random things that don't fit their previous characterization, then how could anyone ever guess motives for murders or any given character's capabilities?
Same with Marshall/Rex's skillset. He's introduced as a nerdy, anxious writer, but it turns out he's also a prodigy marksman who angsts about whether or not he's a violent person and secret former stuntman who's great at parkour? Ok?
I don't wanna nitpick plot holes, but I think it doesn't make sense for Marshall to kill Glen? The day Sazz confronts Marshall is the day before the opening night party, and she says then that they are the only two who know the script was stolen, meaning while Glen knew about the ronkonkoma incident, he would likely have no clue about Marshall stealing the script. In the omitb universe, coincidences like 'a group of people conspiring to cover up a death happen to know the trio's movie's directors, and also happen to live right across from Charles' are seen as reasonable. Sudden drastic career changes like genius stunt double to genius first time (!!) scriptwriter are seen as reasonable. So even if Glen did end up recognizing Marshall as Rex, it wouldn't tie him to the murder, it would just be a fun coincidence. It's possible Marshall just panicked, but that would be strange because he was very calm when the trio chased him and interrogated him. He managed to pretend that he was relieved they were asking him about the murder and not the rewrites! I'm not sure if I'm missing something here, but...
Admittedly I don't know much about trash incinerators, but from what I can tell, Gravey leads the gang to a chute that leads to the incinerator and then they go down to the basement to check what's in it. If Marshall put Sazz's body in the chute, why did he need to bring the vest? Do you have to wear flame resistant clothing just to turn on an incinerator?
Helga says that Sazz said her protege messed up badly and started harassing her. But in the flashback we see that they remained friends post stuntman career. Marshall tricked Sazz into giving him the script and she confronted him right before going to New York, meaning that their relationship was only antagonistic on both sides for like a day. So Marshall was harassing Sazz for at most one day. When did Sazz talk to Helga?
Are the westies... gonna be ok? Since the police know dudenoff is dead they can't really keep the rent control scheme going on, can they?
Ok this last one is really stupid but is the omitb movie just gonna go with Sazz's original screenplay? Didn't it need a bunch of rewrites lol?
All in all, I still really did like the season. It was a super fun watch, with exciting twists and the comedy and acting were still great! And who knows, maybe they'll revisit some of this stuff in future seasons! I'm already looking forward to season 5. I'm actually surprised they picked Lester, poor guy! I was thinking it would probably be someone new so they didn't lose too much of the supporting cast too quickly. The new character, Sofia, looks super cool, and I'm excited to see Olimabel (the Charles is silent) take on organized crime after dealing with four cases that were all about interpersonal drama. And I'm definitely excited for a mystery that seems very much tied to the Arconia.

It pisses me off that Vicki gets more hate for dating Jeremy from hypocritical Stefan fans cause of their age difference and her being a senior but they make so many excuses for Stefan. They say things like Vicki wasn't a vampire when she started dating Jeremy so she can't be held to the same standards in a fantasy show as Stefan. They say that Stefan dating Elena is fine even though he's 163 years old at the start of the show because he turned a few months before his 18th birthday even though Stefan has referred to himself as 163 years old or more multiple times in the show, especially when he celebrates his birthday. He may be physically 17, though he definitely looks older than that, but he is mentally older based on his life experiences. He's been in love and slept with more people than Elena did before and after dating him, has held numerous jobs, studied at Ivy League schools, traveled the world, lived independently for a long time, served in the military, etc. His best friend Lexi turned in her 20s. Some of their conversations show the gap in the eras they were born in so why can't they ever hold Stefan accountable for anything. When Stelena were making out in bed an episode before Elena found out Stefan was a vampire they couldn't escalate things further because of Stefan's bloodlust. I've also seen people argue that Stefan hiding his vampirism from Elena, Ivy, and the other women he's been physically involved with in some way or another isn't a big deal and they compare it to cheaters hiding their martial status which is a dumb argument since he's inherently a predator as a vampire regardless of his beliefs but nonethless he personally has two extreme personalities as one. I feel so bad for Ivy and how he preyed on her for a long time to make himself feel human and once she turned into a vampire due to his negligence and found out about his truth too late he basically toss her aside and Caroline had to try cleaning up his mess. Many Stefan stans infantilize Stefan and say Katherine was 400 years old and preyed on a 17 year old even though she was about 19 when she turned but don't hold him accountable for him sleeping with Elena and other high school girls. Stefan stans say shit like stan Stefan for staking Vicki, though most of them completely blame Damon for it. I've started stanning Vicki out of spite.
Fans are really ignorant to the truth of the matter. I don't know where Mystic Falls is supposed to be located according to the show, but if it's in Virginia, the age of consent is 15 and Vicki is still in high school.
Age isn't just a number. It's about how that number differentiates two people. Stefan isn't 17, his body is. As far as I'm concerned, a mere shell holding everything within. Knowledge and experience in EVERY aspect of life. A common question older people are asked. "If you could give your younger self advice, what would it be?" That's what age gives. Not your body, but your actual life experience. Stefan has an insane amount as you've stated. He's 163 years old, not 17. I have a son with autism, so I speak from a parent's perspective. Age works both ways, so while a 16 year old could act like they're 30, a 30 year old could act like they're 16. I'm gonna tell you the one thing Stefan has that his 163 years gave him. Power over Elena. His education alone, like a teacher dating his student. Worse (by far) for Stefan to date Elena than for Vicki to date Jeremy. Fans like to act as if Stefan was 12 when he paired with Katherine, but no. He was older than Jeremy when he met her.
Damon and Stefan have a lot of shared blame. Vicki's death is one of them and they do it on purpose. Stefan starved Damon. I don't think fans realize just how close he was to being a living corpse. He was so weak that he collapsed in Vicki's arms. Damon tells it like it is. Stefan wanted to stop Elena from learning their truth, and because Damon was locked in the cellar and couldn't give her that, she got it from other characters like Logan and the old man. That's why Damon flat-out said, "Stefan finally fessed up." Their vampirism wasn't a truth that Elena deserved to know, but actually needed to know because their secret literally kills. The writers have done everything they can to hammer in the fact that vampires are predators. They're never truly safe for humans. I honestly don't know what I feel about Vicki, but I do know she has a huge parallel with Elena that I plan to put together sometime soon. And you're right, Stefan didn't have to kill her. I believe he chose to because he was afraid she'd be a ripper like him, and he didn't wanna deal with that.
Fans comparing Stefan hiding his vampirism to hiding his marital status is absurd, and only goes to show how inexperienced they are. The real truth of Stefan hiding his vampirism from Elena is shown in the show itself. He might as well have compelled her into a relationship with him, and he was gaslighting her while he did it. Unknowingly inviting a blood junkie ripper vampire into her bed is a million times more dangerous to Elena than unknowingly inviting a married man into her bed. Stefan's secret is like a deadly plague. He put Elena at extreme physical and emotional risk, put it that way. Ivy was an insanely gorgeous repeat of the truth. As Cade kindly pointed out, never meeting her was protecting her. That would be Damon, and the reason I point out his every action in the pilot episode.

chapter directory
A/N: It’s finally here! Thank you all for your patience and support! Please enjoy!
“—this plan is fucking insane!”
“You said anywhere was better than the mansion!”
“That was before I knew you were claiming sanctuary with the very people that sent Teenage Chewbacca to maul Jinyoung and I!”
“It was Minho who turned Changbin! How many goddamn times do I have to say that to get it through your thick skull!?”
The incessant bickering of the two voices gradually lifts Jinyoung from his slumber, reintroducing his mind to the workings of reality. He flutters his eyes open, surprised at the lack of light, and forces himself to sit up. At his sudden movement, his head roars with pain, sending a dizzy spell through his limbs. He manages to swallow the temporary vertigo and keep upright, quickly realizing his current position in the backseat of a car.
“Jinyoung?... Oh thank god—he’s awake.”
“It’s about fucking time.”
“(Y/N)? Jaebeom-hyung?” Jinyoung squints, attempting to map out your and his brother’s silhouettes through the blackness. He manages to pinpoint the annoyed glare of the latter in the passenger seat, thus concluding that you are probably driving. “What happened? How did I get here?”
“While you were taking a snooze, that fucking superwolf broke into our home and nearly ripped my throat out.” Jaebeom snorts, “Of course, not until after he impaled me with my own landscaping.”
“I managed to stake him before he hurt Jaebeom.” You pipe in, “But we don’t think it killed him—only slowed him down long enough to let us get away.”
Jinyoung shakes his head in both confusion and shock, immediately regretting the decision when his brain pounds like a bass drum. He allows himself a moment to pass the ache before cautiously speaking, “And… where exactly are we going?”
“Yeah, Wonder Woman. Why don’t you tell my brother where your brilliant idea for refuge is?”
Jinyoung can feel the intensity of your glare from the back seat.
“I’m taking us to the wolf pack.” You murmur softly, “If anyone has a chance of talking Changbin down, it will be his own people.”
“And as I was explaining to our dear (Y/N), the wolf pack also has a pretty large bounty over our heads.” Jinyoung hears Jaebeom release a heavy sigh before leaning back in his seat, “We’ll be attacked the moment we step foot out of this car.”
“Would you stop being so damn paranoid?” Your frustrated demand echoes throughout the car, “Not everyone is out to kill you—”
“I’ve made a lot of enemies over the centuries, little dove… Killed a lot of people—pissed off even more.”
“Maybe, but I know you didn’t kill Jackson Wang.”
The car grows dead silent minus the heavy breathing of who Jinyoung assumes to be his hybrid companion. He tries to make out Jaebeom’s expression, but it’s too dark. His imagination will have to do.
“Everyone says you did, but I know there’s more to the truth.” You say, “I may not know what exactly happened, but Jackson’s death wasn’t your fault—either of your faults.”
“And how exactly do you know this?”
“That doesn’t matter right now. What matters is that the pack is our only viable option at the moment, and I need you to trust me on this.”
Jaebeom sighs, “Good God—this is not happening.”
“I trust her.” Jinyoung answers without hesitation, reaching across the council to lay a hand on the hybrid’s shoulder. “We have no reason not to, hyung.”
“And why the hell not?” To his dismay, Jaebeom shrugs away from Jinyoung’s touch. “Give me one good reason why I should trust you with my life.”
“Because I could have let Changbin kill you… but I didn’t.”
Jaebeom grows silent again. And although no words are said, Jinyoung knows—and knows that you know—that the conversation ended in your favor. Jaebeom may be a paranoid, narcissistic sociopath, but even he is capable of hope in the darkest of moments.
A sudden gasp disrupts the hushed atmosphere, resonating from beside Jinyoung a mere foot away. For the first time, he notices a third body propped in the seat next to him. The figure writhes and releases a set of whimpers before growing still once again.
“We have another issue.” Jaebeom murmurs darkly, “Changbin bit Tzuyu during our fight, and when I tried to heal her with my blood… it didn’t work.”
Jinyoung raises an eyebrow, “What do you mean it didn’t work?”
“Minho transformed Changbin into a weapon that would have the power to kill you and Jaebeom—the only two invincible beings in existence.” Your explanation causes Jinyoung’s heart to sink, “His venom can’t be cured by Jaebeom’s blood, so…”
“So Tzuyu is going to die unless we find a cure.” Jaebeom finishes with a hum, “We better get to it fast cause the hallucinations are already starting.”
“The pack will help us.” You affirm. “I know they will.”
Jinyoung truly hopes that your confidence is well placed. Afterall, it is his, Jaebeom and Tzuyu’s lives all on the line.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to do this.” Mark stresses, flipping through the grimoire with enough force to tear the pages. “This spell needs a lot of power—”
“Can’t you do what Youngjae does and channel something? Like a celestial event?”
Mark shakes his head. “Even that won’t be enough. I would have to channel the power unnaturally… through black magic.”
“It’s only one spell—what harm could it do?”
“Black magic is dark magic, Jack.” Mark directly addresses his werewolf companion, shaking his head even more feverishly. “It’s unpredictable… We could offset the balance of nature and—”
“I don’t give a shit about the balance of nature, Mark!” Jackson cuts in, “This may be our one and only chance to get rid of the Primes—to protect our town and the ones we love… Don’t you think that’s a little more important than upsetting the magic gods?...”
“You don’t understand—magic always comes with a price.” Mark says darkly, “I can’t trust what will happen if I use black magic… For fucksake, Jackson—I could kill you.”
Jackson places his hands on Mark’s shoulders, staring deep into the witch’s eyes. “I trust you with my life, Mark… and I know you won’t let me down.”
Mark debates with himself, attempting to find a solution past the chaos of his thoughts. His gut tells him it's a bad idea, but Jackson, his best friend, is telling him otherwise. He’s right—it is only one spell—and like he said, Jackson trusts him…
Mark just has to trust himself too.
“Alright.” He finally nods, “I won’t let you down… I promise.”
“Mark-hyung—Mark!”
At the call of his name, Mark’s mind springs from unconsciousness. His eyes snap open, discovering multiple familiar faces staring down at him. He releases a pained groan, just now recognizing the ache running through his entire body, before murmuring softly:
“What… happened?”
“How much do you remember?”
Mark attempts to pilfer through his memories, recalling his argument with Minho that resulted in the theft of his magic and the moments thereafter where said witch transformed Changbin into a super werewolf. He closes his eyes shut and leans back with a huff.
“How long have I been out?”
Youngjae hums, “At least a couple hours. Minho locked us in the old crypt after you passed out, so we really don’t have any sense of time.”
“Sounds fucking fantastic.” With a deep moan, Mark forces himself into a sitting position. His spine wails at the movement, but he pays it no mind and instead stretches his arms over his head in an attempt to work out the knots in his bones. He also takes the time to survey his surroundings, discovering, just as Youngjae said, to be inside the dingy, crumbling underground cavern beneath the mausoleum. He can’t remember the last time he’s been down here—how ironic.
“I’m guessing Changbin made a beeline for the Project Estate?”
“Didn’t even hesitate.” Youngjae answers, “You don’t think he got them… do you?”
“I honestly could care less about the Primes right now.” With Youngjae’s help, Mark manages to push himself to his feet before finding purchase against a stone pillar. He takes a second to catch his breath, then continues, “There’s an exit down here that leads into a bunch of old tunnels underneath the graveyard. If we can find it, there’s a chance we might—”
“I wouldn’t think about it, hyung.” Mark’s suggestion dies on his tongue as his favorite witch emerges from a dark corner. Beside him, Youngjae releases a surprised gasp while seeming to shrink in on himself. Mark, on the other hand, doesn’t budge.
“Enjoying this villain complex a little too much, don’t you think?”
“You don’t seem very happy with me, Mark-hyung…” Minho smirks.
“Okay—you’ve had your damn fun.” Mark sneers, “Let us all go before I really start to get pissed.”
“Like you can do anything about it anyway, without any magic and all—” The witch wiggles his finger in which the ancient ring still rests. “—and don’t worry. Once the blood moon fully passes, you’re all free to leave.”
“You’re a real fucking psycho, you know that? You really think Changbin is gonna manage to kill both Jaebeom and Jinyoung by himself?”
“I could care less if he does.”
Mark’s eyes narrow, “Why are you keeping us down here? What else could you possibly want?”
“Well, I want to make you suffer as much as possible… but that was already kind of obvious, don’t you think?”
“I’m serious, Minho!” Mark’s hiss echoes between the stone walls of the crypt, bouncing back in his ears like a record on repeat. “Why go to all this trouble to kill the Primes? To mess with me? Are you really that desperate for revenge? That you’d hurt your own people trying to get it?”
Minho shakes his head with a growl, “You all made it very clear that I was never a part of this coven.”
“That is such bullshit!” Mark peers over his shoulder to find Lia emerging from another part of the cavern, followed closely by a quivering, wild-eyed Jisung. “You just never got over the fact that we chose Mark as coven leader—not you!”
“At least I could have kept Nayeon alive!”
“Nayeon’s death wasn’t Mark’s fault! It wasn’t any of our faults!” Lia screams, “Why are you so strung up about this anyway!?”
“Because I loved her!” The atmosphere grows strangely tense at the young witch’s confession, effectively forming the beginnings of a large lump in Mark’s throat. That mass only grows as Minho continues on, “She was the only one who understood me! She believed in me when no one else would!”
Through the corner of his eye, Mark can see the same shock and pain spreading along Youngjae’s features as his own, as well as Jisung’s.
Lia’s expression, however, does not change. “I think you forget that all of us loved Nayeon—all of us are still grieving. It’s not just you.”
“You don’t understand—”
“Then make us understand for crying out loud!” Lia exclaims while throwing her hands up in mock surrender. “You go on about all this bullshit that we never try to include you, when it’s you who never tries—it’s you who always pushes us away!
“We’re supposed to be a team—a family… We are all that’s left of this coven, and look at us now.”
Minho remains silent.
A single tear cascades down Lia’s cheek as she shakes her head. “Nayeon-unnie would be so disappointed… in all of us.”
At her words, Mark feels his heart practically sink into his stomach. He notices the blank expression etched across Minho’s face, wondering what could possibly be going through the young witch’s mind. For a moment, he has hope that Lia’s speech actually knocked some sense into him—that he’ll actually make amends and set them free.
But alas… he speaks too soon.
“Apné sà mene…” Mark immediately recognizes the incantation for a boundary spell, attempting to hurry toward the doorway in which Minho retreated towards. His chest smacks into an invisible barrier, sending his body sprawling back to the crypt floor. Both Youngjae and Lia rush to his side to help him back to his feet—a new pain lingering in his side.
He glares at the retreating witch with all his might.
“You’re gonna regret this.”
“Not as much as I regret ever looking up to you.” Minho waves his hand one final time, making sure to flash his ring, before disappearing up the staircase that leads out of the crypt. With a bitter taste in his mouth, Mark watches as he goes, continuing to do so until he hears the familiar sound of a closing door.
He turns to the trio. “Any chance one of you can break the boundary spell?”
“I might be able to siphon enough power from Lia and Jisung to take it down—” Youngjae shakes his head, “—but it will only be temporary. Maybe ten seconds or less?”
“That’s better than nothing.” Mark nods, “When Youngjae breaks it open, you guys will go through the passageways and head to the Wang Cabin to warn the wolf pack—”
“No.” Lia interrupts his explanation, “Minho will be able to sense our magical energy the minute we step foot out of the boundary. You, however, do not have any magic at the moment.”
“You need to warn the pack, hyung.” Youngjae agrees with a nod, “You’re the only one that can get out undetected.”
Mark feverishly shakes his head, “There’s no fucking way I’m leaving you three here. It’s not happening—”
“Don’t worry about us.” Lia says, “I have a plan to stop both Minho and Changbin.”
“What do you mean?”
“Minho bound Changbin’s power to his own in order to complete the transformation.” She explains, pointing up toward the ceiling. “Once the blood moon is over, Minho will no longer have the power to uphold the spell, so Changbin will no longer be able to remain in his enhanced form, which means…”
“Which means we have to stop the spell before the night ends.” Mark breathes, “Okay… How do we do that?”
“Youngjae can siphon Minho’s magic which should give us enough power to counteract the spell completely… that is, if we can get close enough.”
“Once Mark-hyung warns the pack, we’ll have more than enough backup to take him down.” Youngjae adds, “We need to do this now, before he comes back.”
Mark shakes his head again, “I don’t know about this—”
“We can do this. Trust us, Mark.”
Lia’s determined gaze strikes a chord deep within Mark’s chest. He doesn’t think he’s ever seen her look so serious and resolute…
He’s never seen her look so much like a leader.
“Fine.” He reluctantly agrees, “Let’s do it.”
“Lia? Jisung?” At Youngjae’s call, both of the younger witches offer their hands for the siphoner to take. His own hands glow as he begins the counter incantation, gesturing for Mark to make his move with a nod of his head. Mark does as requested, carefully sliding past a crack in a nearby pillar to enter the secret passageway.
He spares one final glance at his coven mates, admiring the fierce passion along each of their features, before turning into the tunnel and becoming one with the shadows of the night.

Sometimes you forget life even existed before your time in Moon Dye Bay. Maybe it’s a result of your newfound interest in supernatural existence, or possibly due to the close relationships you’ve made throughout your stay. In the entirety of your time of living, you’ve never once called anywhere home, and while you still refuse to commit yourself to such a description, you can’t deny that this strange, little town has come pretty damn close.
Before you moved to Moon Dye, you lived in Chicago for about a year while finishing up your graduate work. Not quite in the city, but in a borderline rundown suburbia on the outskirts. There, you rented a decent condo for dirt cheap and found a well-paying, easy office job right down the street. It was every college student's greatest dream—until it wasn’t.
To this day, your mind still doesn’t recall the event as vividly as it should. Probably in an effort to ease the underlying trauma and fear. Even so, you don’t like to think back on it too much… Who would—when you’re the only survivor in a massacre of dozens of innocent people?
But even so, if it weren’t for that day, you would never have ended up in Moon Dye Bay… nor learned that fairy tale creatures aren’t quite fictional afterall.
You push the thought away to focus on pulling into the nonexistent driveway. The passenger beside you releases a rather loud groan as the car rocks back and forth, but you choose not to comment on his obvious distaste of your driving. You’re too exhausted… and frankly, you just don’t care at this point.
“You guys stay in the car.” You say while killing the engine and shrugging off your seatbelt, “I should talk to them first just in case, so try not to get yourselves in any more trouble while I’m gone.”
Jaebeom clicks his tongue, “Says the one who can’t seem to go one day without being attacked.”
“Hyung—” Jinyoung goes to scold his brother, but your voice beats him to it.
“Last I checked, it was your girlfriend, your proxy vampire minion, and, surprise, surprise, you who have all tried to turn me into a human blood bag.” You exit the car before throwing one final glare at the hybrid, “Keep treating me like some sort of liability, and the next time someone tries to kill your pompous ass, I won’t be so kind as to save your fucking life.”
With that, you shove the vehicle door shut with a little more force than necessary and storm toward the cabin, attempting to push the annoyance from mind. You wouldn’t usually waste your breath on something like Jaebeom’s pettiness, but with the combination of the stress of the current situation and fear for everyone’s lives at stakes, you really don’t want to deal with the hybrid’s need to make you feel like the dumbest person on the planet.
You eventually reach the front door, lifting a hand to knock at the wooden surface. The ominous silence of the nighttime tugs at your nerves as you wait—hopefully one of the wolves is actually up at this hour… maybe you should have called beforehand?
As each minute passes, your patience grows thinner and thinner. Even after another series of rather obnoxious knocks, no one opens the door. You debate returning to the car and discussing a Plan B with your undead squad, but decide to check the backyard first. Maybe the pack is having some sort of late night bonfire…?
You carefully navigate your way around the cabin, using the light of your cellphone as a guide through the darkness. Minus catching your toe on a loose board in the decking, you manage to make it to the back of the cabin unscathed. However, the sight that you find is definitely far from that of the bonfire:
From what little you can see, the yard is completely trashed. Picnic tables lay in splintered halves while other pieces of furniture are either smashed to smithereens or tossed to the side. Even Dahyun’s clothesline is no longer standing, and is instead strewn carelessly across the grass along with its collection of unfolded laundry. A particular sweatshirt catches your attention, appearing somewhat dirty in the minimal light. Once you’re close enough, you take the garment in your own two hands to better identify the mysterious stains… and you almost wish you hadn’t seen it in the first place when the realization settles in your head:
A large splotch of fresh blood is decorated across the fabric like an unfinished painting.
“Shit…” You curse, searching the area for any other possible clues of the pack’s whereabouts. Near the edge of the pond, you discover what seems to be an array of footprints in the mud, leading into the black of the quiet forest. There are multiple sets, you find, and you hope they all belong to the werewolves in question…
You know you should return to the car and report your findings to Jaebeom and Jinyoung, but something in your gut tells you that someone is in trouble.
Before you can dwell on the cons, you push forward into the woods, following the muddy footprints as best as you possibly can. Between pushing away mischievous branches and stepping over lazy logs, you’re almost reminded of the path you traversed before you met with Mina… You can only hope the events that follow this time aren’t as horrific.
“Yugyeom!...” You call softly, trying not to mistake each tree trunk as the silhouette of a person. “Bang Chan!... Anyone out here!?...”
The screech of the nightly breeze is your response. You eventually lose the footprint trail, unable to base your path off of anything but intuition. Your desire to turn back is strong, but you’ve come this far… and you doubt you’ll even be able to find your way back to the cabin at this point.
Your body tenses as a high-pitched wail enters your ears—a wail that sounds oddly similar to that of a human. Against the siren in your head screaming red flags, you head in the direction in which the noise came from. The silence pesters you as you go, practically electrifying your nerves from the inside out.
Out of nowhere, your foot catches some kind of large branch or rock, sending your body sprawling toward the earth with a loud gasp. You manage to break your fall with your arms, ignoring the gentle ache in your wrists, and scramble to grab the phone you dropped on the way down. Your anxiety is practically through the roof by the time the device is back in your grasp, but you muster up the courage and move to continue your search. However, the reveal of something that looks oddly like a human limb freezes your muscles.
It wasn’t a branch you tripped over… it was a leg.
“(Y/N)...”
It takes you a moment to identify the voice between the shock and fear, but all at once, your uneasiness shifts to concern.
“D… Dahyun!?”
After moving your light for a better view, you discover the female wolf slumped against a tree and covered head to toe in what seems to be a combination of blood and sticky mud. Her clothes are practically stained crimson, which you quickly realize is the result of the large jagged rock protruding from her abdomen.
“Holy shit… What happened to you?” You drop to her level to better assess her condition. There are more wounds embedded across her arms and chest—wounds that resemble claw marks…
“It was Changbin…” Your heart practically plummets to your stomach at her revelation. Dahyun pauses to cough—a couple projectiles of blood spewing from her lips—before continuing, “He attacked the pack… but he—he was different… Super strong and super fast and—and… It’s almost like he was—”
“Upgraded.” You finish, “Minho transformed Changbin into a weapon to kill Jaebeom and Jinyoung—the same spell Mark tried to use on Jackson.”
“It was more than that, (Y/N)...” She shakes her head, “Changbin wasn’t… wasn’t like himself…”
“What do you mean?”
“He was a monster…” You allow the wolf to grab your hand, ignoring the sticky feel of her blood against your skin. “I don’t—I don’t even know if anyone else is still alive… I don’t—I mean, I can’t—”
“Shhh.” You hum gently, reaching up to push away the hair melded to her sweaty forehead. Dahyun somewhat calms at your touch, but just from the wild expression along her features, you can tell the poor girl is scared out of her fucking mind.
“We’ll deal with that later, but right now, I need to get you out of here—”
You don’t have the chance to finish your sentence before she’s practically lurching away from you.
“No! You’re the one who needs to leave!”
“Dahyun—”
“He will kill you, (Y/N)!” She hiccups, “You need to run before he finds you!”
“I’m not just going to leave you here to bleed out—”
“She’s right.” You whirl around at the new voice, and to your surprise, discover a disheveled Yugyeom emerging from the darkness. Similar to the female wolf, gaping claw-marks decorate his face, chest and lower abdomen. His arm also seems to be broken and his knee badly dislocated—you can almost see the bone peeking out of his skin.
You hurry to catch the wolf before he collapses, carefully lowering him to lean against the same tree Dahyun is propped against. A pained wheeze passes his lips, but his expression remains as stoic and as determined as ever.
“If you care about your life, then you’ll run.”
“And if I care about yours and Dahyun’s lives?”
“We’re already as good as dead.”
“No—” You shake your head feverishly, “—I refuse to let you throw yourself to the big bad wolf like some fucking martyr, so you either start moving or I’ll drag you by the skin of your teeth.”
Yugyeom’s expression softens. “You sound like Jackson-hyung…”
If it were any other situation, you would have allowed yourself the time to respond to the newcomer’s comparison… but you’d rather not stay and risk the chance of encountering any more surprises.
“C’mon.” You carefully throw Dahyun’s arm over your shoulder, mindful not to push the rock deeper into her abdomen. Once you’re sure she won’t buckle back to the forest floor, you offer your free hand to the third party. “None of us are dying tonight.”
A familiar, malicious chuckle has your limbs growing numb.
“I wouldn’t be so sure of that.” Like a creature of the night, a smirking Changbin saunters into view. His clothes are torn and tarnished with blood, yet there’s no trace of injury along his skin. With the little light you have, you can just barely make out the black veins decorating underneath his eyes—the magic is already starting to consume him.
“Listen to me…” You murmur cautiously, maneuvering your body so Dahyun is safe behind and out of reach. “You’re under the effects of dark magic, okay? You’re not yourself—”
“I’ve never felt more like myself than I have now.” Your eyes dart around the area as Changbin leers closer and closer, attempting to find something sharp or heavy enough to knock him out. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any tea mugs or large branches in sight—
“I don’t want to hurt you, Changbin…”
“Really? Cause I sure want to hurt you…” He smiles devishly, “In fact, I’m just dying to rip out your fucking throat after that bullshit stunt you pulled back at the manor—”
“Leave her out of this, Bin.” Yugyeom hisses, clutching his chest while keeping himself supported against the tree. “If you have a problem, then take it out on me… Not her.”
“Oh, don’t worry… I’ll get to you next, hyung.” Changbin suddenly approaches, providing you no preparation as he snatches your wrist and pulls. With the little strength she has left, Dahyun attempts to defend you, landing a couple heavy hits against the attacker’s head. However, it only takes a good shove to send her flying to the ground—leaving you helpless in the arms of the beast.
You try to throw your own punches, but Changbin is both stronger and faster by miles. In the blink of an eye, he has your figure pinned to the ground with a calloused hand around your throat. Your lungs immediately go into a frenzy as the superwolf cuts off your oxygen supply. You claw at his fingers, breaking skin and fighting for breath, but his grip remains as firm as steel.
“…Think of…” You choke—your eyes beginning to roll to the back of your head. “…J-Jack…son…”
“What the fuck did you say—!?”
A loud bang erupts through the area, drowning out Changbin’s demand. Through the dark spots of your vision, you notice a gaping hole in the center of his throat. Another bang sounds, and this time, his head is blown to shreds of brain matter and skull. His grip immediately loosens, permitting your intake of oxygen once more. You quickly scramble away from the now unmoving corpse, gasping for air and clutching your swollen neck.
You’re almost glad it’s dark, so you can’t see the extent to which Changbin’s head had been mutilated.
Your ears are still vibrating when someone takes your shoulders.
“Jinyoung…?”
“Are you hurt?”
“No—no… I’m fine.” You allow the vampire to help you back to your feet. “Is… he?”
“For now.” Jinyoung hums, leading you into a nearby circle of light. To your surprise, you discover Mark carrying Dahyun with one arm and supporting Yugyeom with the other—a large shotgun splayed along his back. “Mark is a remarkable shot… I don’t think you wish to see, but Changbin won’t be bothering us for at least a couple hours.”
You release a sigh of relief. “Great… But now what?”
“Yugyeom says the rest of the pack is holed up in a secret bunker deeper into the forest.” Mark speaks for the first time, “We should head there… We all need to talk.”
“There’s no time like the present.” Jaebeom pipes up, emerging from the shadows with an unconscious Tzuyu in his arms. “I don’t know about you guys, but I really don’t want to be here when this guy wakes up…”
☽ ☽ ☽ ☽ ☽ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾
Jackson is floating, aimlessly traveling through a white fog in which reality doesn’t quite reach. The Other Side is funny like that—Jackson doesn’t exist in the eyes of nature, therefore, when he’s not visiting the land of the living, he’s merely suspended in a state of nonexistence with nothing but the company of his own thoughts. He’ll spot the spirit of a fellow supernatural every so often, but even then… he’s completely alone.
Until he found you.
A wave of fondness spreads through Jackson’s veins—as if he had drunk a comforting cup of hot tea. In all the time he’s spent in the neverending nothingness, he never once thought he’d be able to feel again… but like a firework in the black of night, you sparked every bit of hope and passion and liveliness lingering within his mortal spirit. Maybe it was your determination that reminded him of his past self, or maybe it was your eyes—so bright with the stars of mortality—that made Jackson want to live again, to experience the warmth of your smile and the chill of your gaze in the depths of a true beating heart.
Something about you just makes him feel so… human.
Jackson snickers to himself before peering over his shoulder, having previously noticed some kind of blurred silhouette in the distance. It’s too far to tell, but he can just barely make out the approaching shape of another spirit—likely a newly deceased supernatural. He prepares to retire back to his thoughts, but is, however, interrupted when an ice-cold feeling overtakes the entirety of his being. Jackson freezes, both from the cold and his realization:
The witches know about his plan… and they’re not happy about it.
☽ ☽ ☽ ☽ ☽ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾ ☾
“—so once Youngjae siphons Minho’s power, he’ll be able to reverse the spell and turn Changbin back to normal.” Jaebeom keeps his focus on the witch as he relays his explanation to the many other audience members scattered around the bunker. He never thought the day would come where he would actually be working in tandem with Mark Tuan, the motherfucking magician himself, but here he is—
“What if Youngjae can’t perform the spell in time?” The pack’s beta, Yugyeom speaks up from his seat at a small, cardboard table stationed in the tiny kitchenette. He stretches his newly healed knee out in front of him before sparing Mark an inquisitive glance, “What happens then?”
“Minho’s power is the only anchor keeping Changbin alive, most of which he's drawing from the eclipse. Once that power runs out, then Changbin’s form will give out, which means—”
“He’ll die.” Dahyun finishes, pacing from one end of the underground shelter to the other. If it weren’t for the blood stains on her clothing and the large bandage encompassing her exposed abdomen, it would be impossible to tell she had been stabbed only minutes ago.
Being a werewolf certainly does pay off.
Mark nods, “Yes.”
“How long do we have then? Roughly?”
“‘Til the moon goes down, so about an hour and a half. Two hours at the most.”
“Shit.” She curses, “We’re so fucking screwed.”
“Let’s not jump to the worst of all evils so quickly.” Jaebeom fights the urge to roll his eyes as his brother, always the hero, appears from the next room before assuming his perch beside your sitting figure. He hands you an ice pack while still speaking to Mark, “You’re certain Youngjae will have enough strength to disarm the witch?”
“Not really, but it’s the only option at this point.”
“While this pathetic excuse of a plan is super great and all, there’s still a pretty big fucking elephant in the room.” Ignoring the harsh glare the witch sends his way, Jaebeom continues, “There’s a cure for werewolf wonder’s bite, right? Some sort of witchy antidote or spell—?”
“As sorry as I am for your vampire girlfriend, I never thought of a cure when I designed the spell.” Mark’s eyes flash with something akin to resentment, spilling amusement through Jaebeom’s veins like a toxin. “When I want something—someone dead, I want them to stay dead.”
Jaebeom snorts. “Still the same punk ass kid you’ve always been, Tuan… It’s nice to see that nothing’s changed.”
“You’re a fucking prick—”
“Mark-hyung. Don’t.” Yugyeom places a calming hand on Mark’s shoulder, stopping him from storming over to where Jaebeom is currently smirking like a fool. The wolf glances at the latter before shaking his head, “We have bigger things than petty rivalries to worry about.”
To Jaebeom’s disappointment, Mark agrees with a sigh.
“Right… It’s just been a real shitty night.”
“For all of us, it’s safe to say.” Jaebeom doesn’t miss the warning look his brother sends his way, shaking his head scoldingly before turning to the witch-werewolf pair. “Could Changbin’s blood possibly reverse the venom’s effects? Similar to Jaebeom?”
Mark shakes his head, “Changbin isn’t a hybrid like your asshole of a brother. His blood has no healing properties whatsoever—”
“But there has to be something.” Your voice immediately cuts the former off, allowing Jaebeom some time to suppress the urge to fly across the room and tear the witch’s tongue from his mouth. “Youngjae once told me that magic always has a loophole, so a cure has to exist—we just have to figure out what it is.”
“I admire your positivity, little dove, but we don’t exactly have the time for trial and error.” Jaebeom peers over his shoulder at a sleeping Tzuyu—who is still showing no signs of possible consciousness or life in general. Her skin is flushed and sweaty with fever, but he can sense how her limbs tremble beneath the poison coursing through her veins. His chest tightens for a moment, only until he returns his focus back onto the conversation at hand:
“Minho might have an idea, but it’s a long shot.” Mark exhales, “Once we take him down, there’s no guarantee he’d tell us—if there is a cure, that is—and with the combined effects of your and Changbin’s venom, I have no clue how long your girlfriend has until—”
A sudden clatter has everyone leaping from their seats. Yugyeom flies to the bunker door in mere seconds while Mark snatches his shotgun from the kitchen counter behind him. Through the corner of his eye, Jaebeom notices Jinyoung usher you behind his form before pressing a small pocket knife between your fingers. The blossoming of the black bruises along your throat sparks rancor through the hybrid’s veins, and he readies himself into his own fighting stance.
“Yugyeom!?... Are you in there!?”
Yugyeom’s hostile expression transitions into one of relief—the tension melting from his body like snow. Although the voice is apparently familiar to the rest, Jaebeom remains tense as the beta goes about unlocking the bunker door. He almost expects a cackling Changbin to come bursting through the trapdoor, but is pleasantly surprised when a new figure comes into view—another limp body thrown precariously over his shoulder.
“Oh my god! Chan—Felix!” Dahyun immediately rushes toward the pair. Her gaze practically alive with fear. “Holy shit—is he alive!?”
The newcomer, who Jaebeom assumes to be Chan, sets down the teenager, presumably Felix, on one of the bunk beds with the help of Yugyeom and Mark. He catches Jinyoung helping a third figure, a teenage girl who can’t be over eighteen, into the bunker as well. Judging by her glassy irises and quivering lips, she seems as if she is going to burst into tears at the drop of a thimble. The group’s collective ragged appearance, Jaebeom knows, signifies the aftermath of one hell of a fight.
“What the hell happened out there, Chan!?” Yugyeom’s demand awakens the hybrid from his trance, forcing him to return his focus to the newcomer.
“H-He found us…” Chan murmurs darkly, “I… I tried to protect them… but he was too strong…”
“How is that possible?” Jaebeom frowns. “Sabrina the Witch over here blew his fucking head off—”
“They had to have been attacked before then.” Jinyoung places a calming hand on his shoulder, which he is quick to shake off.
The strange werewolf nods in agreement, “We took our time to get here—didn’t want to risk running into him again…”
“Wait…” The room grows hushed at Dahyun’s exclamation. When Jaebeom turns toward the female wolf, his annoyance falters at the panicked expression etched along her pretty features. “Where the hell is Chaeyoung…?”
Chan remains silent and still, like a boy fresh out of war, but Jaebeom has witnessed enough in his many lifetimes to see the answer written all along his face.
Yugyeom stands. His expression grim, almost sorrowful, as if he already knows too.
“Bang Chan… Where is Chaeyoung?”
“…she’s dead…” His whisper is barely audible, yet the hybrid can see how deeply those two words wound the crowd around him. “…bled out… there was nothing I could do…”
“Fuck…” Dahyun shivers before burying her face into her palms and letting out an even louder curse, “Fuck!...”
“I’m so sorry…”
Your soft voice carries over the female wolf’s sobs. Fascinated, Jaebeom watches as you maneuver your way across the bunker to kneel in front of a now sitting Bang Chan. You take his trembling hands between your own and peer up at the wolf with the most sympathetic gaze he has ever seen—his own heart can’t help but lurch at the sight.
“I hate to add to the list, but we have another issue—” Mark groans, pulling his hand away from the incapacitated teenager’s neck to press it against his own perspirating forehead. “—Felix was bitten…”
“Are you fucking kidding me!?”
“Dahyun—please.” Yugyeom sighs, “I just—shit.”
“We need to find that cure. Now.” Jinyoung steps forward, turning to speak directly to Mark. “I will go to the graveyard to assist your coven. With my help, it should be fairly simple to disarm the rogue.”
“Don’t underestimate him. You’re still gonna have to put up a damn good fight.”
“I can well manage on my own.”
Jaebeom shakes his head with a sneer, “I seriously doubt that, considering you got yourself poisoned the last time you played goddamn Superman.”
As much as Jinyoung puts up the invincible front, Jaebeom has known his brother for a long, long time—and also knows that the previous encounter with the superwolf left him much weaker than before. He can see it in the trembling of his hands and the pained lines etched along his forehead. He’ll get himself killed long before he reaches the graveyard.
“Jaebeom should go too.” You rise from your kneeling position to join the group. “Two pairs of hands are better than one. You can protect each other.”
“Absolutely not.” Jinyoung disagrees, “Jaebeom needs to remain here in case Changbin resurrects again.”
“We don’t have the time to worry about that. The witches will need all the help they can get.”
Jaebeom scoffs, “I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but (Y/N) is right. We don’t know what we’re up against—better for us both to be there than just the one.”
Jinyoung stares at Jaebeom for a brief moment, as if searching his face for some hidden secret, before inhaling a deep, yet silent breath and finally nodding, “Fine. But if Changbin attacks—”
“We’ll handle it.” Yugyeom nods, “Thank you… for doing this.”
“We all have something to lose.” Jaebeom doesn’t miss the glance Jinyoung sends in your direction before making his way over to the bunker exit. “I just wish to make sure that no one else dies.” The last bout of final farewells are shared along with the reminder for everyone to remain on their best guard. In an attempt to follow his brother, Jaebeom moves to climb the ladder, but is stopped by the call of his name:
“Jaebeom, wait!...” He pauses—his interest piquing as you rush toward his temporary perch. Your gaze is shy, he notices, but still contains the fire of a thousand burning suns. “Just… be careful out there, okay?”
His response is indifferent. “Not to worry, little dove. I’ll make sure Jinyoung returns to you in one piece.”
“Promise me you both will return in one piece, please…”
Jaebeom’s annoyance immediately dissipates at the stressed enunciation of your words. His cold expression melts into a mixture of surprise and astonishment, mirroring the conflict brewing throughout his chest. He clears his throat, attempting to expel the emotions creeping up his back, before nodding:
“Y-Yeah, sure.” He gulps, “Can you… take care of Tzuyu? While I’m gone?”
Your gaze softens. “Of course. Just please stay alive.”
Jaebeom doesn’t respond, untrusting that his words will make sense if said aloud. After providing you a silent farewell, he climbs the rest of the way out of the bunker where Jinyoung is waiting. His brother offers a pointed glance when he completely exits the safety of the bunker.
“I trust you’re ready for this, hyung?”
“Let’s get this shit over with.” Jaebeom rolls his eyes, “I’m getting real tired of running from Teenage Chewbacca.”

Episode 32 arrives! It’s, I gotta say, quite an improvement on what we’ve had lately. Quite an improvement. Even so, it’s nothing that’s gonna rock the world... but hey, I was so desperate for something different to happen that y’know what, I’ll take it.
Pic of the week:
A Digimon who just wants to roll around in the grass. Go’way, baddies.
More below!
So as you probably gather... we start with Takeru this week! Haha! Good riddance Taichi! I luv ya but I’ve had enough of ya! Take a break!
jk I totally missed him the whole thirty seconds he wasn’t on screen
Takeru and Patamon are running for their lives, of course! Patamon makes a valiant effort to evolve to protect Takeru but...
... Poor baby. He gave it the ol’ college try but he just ain’t as young as he used to be.
Things look grim until Komondomon shows up with a creepy disembodied hand sticking out of his fur!
Phew, it’s just Sora. Her brilliant plan to rescue Takeru is to grab his arm and drag him along with them... I mean... sure... Whiplash has been proven Not A Thing in this universe so...
After getting rid of their pursuer, the group checks in with the others. I’m reminded of how silly separations feel when you can just communicate with each other by walkie-talkie. Yamato’s been riding Garurumon for a long time now lol. At least we got to see him...
He sweetly encourages Takeru and tells him the best thing he can do to help Patamon with his evolution issues is be there to support him. Then he tells Taichi “I leave Takeru in your case.” Ok sure, like Sora’s not right there...
Taichi: In my care? Should I point out that I already lost one little sibling to the dark side? Nah...
Seriously, though... that’s the current situation. Taichi is actively going over SkullKnightmon to get Hikari back. If Takeru stays with him that just means Takeru gets to go into danger again too. Of course, it seems that the dark side is suddenly uninterested in Takeru and Patamon so... I guess it’s okay 9_9
We then check in with Mimi! Who is being her awesome Mimi-tastic self. Ugh I love her.
Wondered what happened to Golemon. Turns out there was nothing much to worry about because no one loves a macho boxing match like Tachikawa Mimi. If there’s ever a season where these kids grow up, I hope Mimi is like, a big fan of sumo or something.
Taichi: O... kay... well... Mimi sure is... an intersting person...
Agumon: Hey you should make her your girlfriend!
Taichi: what nOOO BAD IDEA ABORT ABORT
Meanwhile, the situation with Jou is, um, questionable to say the least...
(how is keeping that towel on)
Jou: HEEEEELP!!!
Taichi: ... you didn’t hear anything, did you? Me neither. *closes link*
Finally we check in with Koushirou. I’m sure I don’t need to tell you what he says. -__-;
At least we see him get bombed a bit. He’s okay though.
Meanwhile unconscious Patamon gets a visitor from baby angel Lopmon, who tells him about hist lost memories.
He adds that the other legendary warriors have lost their power and it’s up to Patamon and his bond with Takeru to save the world more or less.
He encourages Patamon to find his hope.
Patamon: Who am I? What am I? All before me is dark. I know not what path to take.
The others, having nothing better to do, peep on Patamon’s crisis of faith.
Takeru relates a story about learning to swim and being scared of the water, but Yamato stayed with him so eventually he was able to learn to do it. Aww. Not quite comparable to Hikari’s “I wet the bed and Taichi changed the sheets and then told our parents that he was the one that did it” from the 99 series but still pretty good.
The sweet moment is interrupted by a flash of light! Then dark! Then light! Then dark!
It’s another scary Digimon! Oh dear. It’s Kerberomon. A three-headed Cerberus as I’m sure you figured out. Once again, this show does not how to convey what the stakes are. After everything we’ve been through, it’s hard to take random nobody Digimon as serious as each episode wants us to take them... but it’s obvious from the build up here that Kerberomon’s going to be tough to beat for Reasons.
Greymon gets hit and says, “I let down my guard!” MAYBE DON’T DO THAT THEN
Also it is very windy.
Le ouch. This is the Digimon from earlier whose name I forgot to take down. He’s come back with his friend...
... Scarier-in-the-dark-mon.
They’re surrounded~ Oh noes and whatnot.
Taichi is a bit cool here, clinging to Komondomon’s helmet and directing the battle like a war general. Mostly he’s telling them how to avoid getting hit by Kerberomon’s powerful attacks but I like that we get to see him using his head like this.
What I think is happening here is, Komondomon isn’t as fast as the kids could be if they were on their own, so their speed is hampered and that plus the number of assailants makes this battle tough. I am sure we’re supposed to assume that the reason WarGreymon doesn’t appear is because it takes a lot of energy to bring him out, even though last time he appeared twice in the same episode -.-;
Sora decides to be useful and goes to help Takeru get to safety.
... She is immediately struck by an attack and collapses, badly hurt somehow. This is so dumb. First of all, they don’t even animate her getting hit. There’s a flash and then she’s down. She should at least get to throw herself over Takeru protectively or something. Geez. 90s anime did it so much better. She’s just standing there and gets hit. What, did she forget there was a battle raging around her?
Second, WE ALREADY HAD DAMSEL IN DISTRESS SORA. It was Jou’s motivation to be cool way back when this show was rather more interesting than it has been of late. Why do the boys need Sora to get SERIOUSLY INJURED to be able to fight?? WHY?? Like, Taichi gets caught in the line of fire ALL THE TIME, but he never gets injured to the point where he can’t continue on. (Except for that one time with Devimon but those were exceptional circumstances!)
Like, why are we making Sora so weak?? This is so unnecessary.
I guess Yamato was right by entrusting Takeru to Taichi instead of Sora though...
... Uhhh.... never mind X’D
Taichi: Whew... m-maybe no one saw that...
Our be-bibbed god reappears to offer sage advice.
Patamon recalls his final moments as Seraphimon... being enveloped into darkness.
This is cool - we see his angelic wings turn to demon ones briefly before he slides back to lower levels. Not sure if it means anything but we have been theorizing that Patamon could still be infected by the evil that wounded him in the past.
Patamon then recalls things that happened after he was reborn and I’m reminded for the billionth time how much harder the emotions around Angemon’s death hit in the 99 show...
Suddenly Patamon realizes - his hope is Takeru, and he is Takeru’s hope.
The boys put on their game faces. This is what I mean by Sora really didn’t need to get hurt here. I get that it gives Takeru a reason to be protective, but the thing that evolves Patamon is Patamon’s feelings, the same way Agumon’s feelings were what rescued them from Devimon etc. That’s an interesting thing about this show - the Digimon’s feelings seem as important to evolution as, if not more than, the kids’.
Patamon evolves!! Very creepily! But... not to Angemon!
He becomes Pegasusmon! Who... looks a lot bigger than I remember, even considering Takeru is very small... xD
So this is pretty cool! I’ve been wondering how on earth the show was gonna keep introducing evolutions after already using up so many key players, especially for Taichi. But it looks like Armor Digimon can appear, and that makes me think that we could see all kinds of evolutions for the entire team that we’ve never seen before. I like that idea, but I don’t really know if this show has time for it. Maybe it will just be Pegasusmon and Nefertimon who are available to Takeru and Hikari so the writers can preserve the angels for the most epic moments only. That seems the most likely way things will go here, and the only qualm I have with it is, they’ve played all of Taichi’s cards already, and he’s the main character. He has to have something else in the future...
He attac!!!!
Kerberomon doesn’t last long, although why is wholly inexplicable. What about Pegasusmon gives him the edge when MetalGreymon and Garudamon couldn’t handle it? Is it because he’s an Armor Digimon? That may be it but the show doesn’t bother to explain.
Another thing I’d love to see, if there are gonna be more than just one evolutionary tree for the partners, is the kids actually strategizing when they decide which evolution to use. One of the cool parts of Tamers was the kids actively supporting their partner with skill as well as heart. I don’t think that’s gonna happen in this season, but you know, a girl can dream.
Takeru: Hurray for murder!
The three Digimon work together to put the lid on Kerberomon. Garudamon has the coolest moment. Squash.
Taichi checks on Sora who seems fine now. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
Aw, but these two really are adorable.
What a sweet ending card T_T I want more of these.
Okay so yeah, this episode was a much needed upper after the stream of “watch Taichi fight random forgettable monsters” episodes we’ve had lately. I’m glad we got it. I still, just, like, why can’t they get the emotional build up right?? I wouldn’t say 99 Adventure did anything insanely unusual in how it treated the various crises the kids faced, but it def did a better job than this show. In 99, they understood the importance of moments of reflection, of talking about things, of showing expressions and how other characters react... And I still feel like this reboot DID do that, at least somewhat better, in the beginning. Like what went down between Yamato and Taichi after Ogremon was killed. That was pretty good.
They’ve totally lost what makes Digimon great. I hope this episode is a sign that they’re gonna take it back, but, my heart just hearts y’all.
Next episode... I’m rather surprised since we are REALLY overdue some face time with Yamato, not to mention Mimi and Jou, but apparently we’re sticking with Taichi. At least it looks lke we’ll get some new plot stuff related to Hikari.
If this all leads up to something that makes sense, I will retract all my complaints, I swear. Except about the gratuitous nonstop fighting. But the rest, I will take back.
Taichi’s determined!! This is Digimon Adventure! Let’s go on a freaking adventure!!

*grumble grumble* dumb Tumblr deleting my 2.5K words post for no reason blegh.
Well anyway,
In defense of Gonta and Kokichi's friendship
Heyo! I like both Gonta and Kokichi a lot lot lot, they're both p much my faves.
I've only watched a single let's play for v3 a few weeks ago so I don't remember everything, however I was on the lookout for those two and it's pretty easy to miss their positive interactions or even misinterpret them, but I'll try to bring up what I remember cause I've seen people hating the relationship between them a lil too much and while I'll concede that it isn't the best it's also important not to dismiss the good things canon and heavily supported headcanon. Also it's one of my favourite friendships of all the danganronpa franchise even when we only look at absolute canon.
Without further ado, we start off with the insect meet and greet that gets brought up a lot. It gives off the impression that Kokichi manipulated Gonta into doing it, but there's a piece of dialogue between Gonta and Shuichi before it in which Gonta says 'Oh, Shuichi! Are you looking for a way to get students to trade motive videos?', meaning it was a plan he wanted to do- and we can assume it's not Kokichi who pushed him into thinking of that, cuz Gonta wasn't aware of his plan and why would Kokichi tell him about trading motive videos without mentioning his plan?
After that during the IMAG When Kokichi says he has to leave and Gonta asks him why, Kokichi very clearly says that he'll bring their motive videos to watch together and Gonta very clearly agrees to it. No manipulation. So all of Kokichi's IMAG plan can be boiled down to 'I'll force everyone to gather and watch the motive videos, and I'll get help from Gonta since he supports this idea, and along the way he can show off his bugs so it's a win-win' and note that Kokichi is not anymore malicious with his plans than he thinks is necessary, he could have lied to him and just gathered the students elsewhere, but instead he chose a plan that would make Gonta happy. I'm not sure why he didn't explain his entire plan to Gonta beforehand, but at least he chose him because he agreed with his opinion and didn't go out of his way to manipulate him.
After that we think Kokichi tricked Gonta because the students- mainly Tsumugi- keep saying it, and we see Gonta confused so we think he has no idea what's going on- but he does, he clearly agreed to watch the videos, and is confused a little as to why they keep saying he's gotten manipulated. Then we see him angry and assume he's angry at being manipulated, but he is only angry because Kokichi lied about liking bugs, and, well, he didn't let it slide and punished Kokichi with the IMAG, so, yeah. If you don't look closely it's very easy to misinterpret this whole event.
Moving on to the whole lovely mess that is chapter 4. I'll explain it in a chronological order so hopefully it doesn't get too messy.
Two murders happened for an insanely stupid reason, and Gonta once again wasn't able to prevent it. At this point he's desperate to help his friends but he feels more and more useless and unhelpful, the constant babying from his classmates doesn't help
Kokichi takes the motive keycard and sees the secret of the outside world. You know, the one that broke all of the students in chap 5 and made Shuichi understand the idea of Gonta's mercy killing in chap 5 and made Shu so depressed he couldn't do anything but lay in his bed for days.
Now I'm gonna go in speculation territory cuz I've only watched the game once a few weeks ago and my memory is fuzzy and it's hard to come up with a good analysis without a second watch through, so prepare for some confusing stuff here. There are two of Kokichi's reaction to seeing the literal end of the world before his eyes after he thought there was an audience, the initial one is that it drove him to insane despair (which Kaito noticed and punched him and called him weirder than usual) and he started to believe that this entire twisted game was only made for one single crazy mastermind, and maybe the best choice was for all of them to die after all. But then he may have thought further of it and realized there might still be a chance for it to be a lie, because why would a single person care so much about rules for a game without others stopping them from doing whatever dumb whim they want? So through his despair Kokichi thinks there might still be a chance that the world is fine and there's an audience which wants a thrilling game of murder, but he needs to test that theory. The plan he comes up with would be to see if monokuma would team up with him to add a motive to the neo world, and if monokuma accepted then it would mean there really is an audience that wants things spiced up. Problem is, he knows Miu wants to kill him there.
Now, I don't know what exactly Kokichi's plan was, but I'm sure he can come up with plans very quickly and adapt to whatever situation and see a few moves ahead. Gonta followed him outside- Kokichi didn't lure him out-, and it was then that Kokichi came up with the plan we all know of…
Reminder that Gonta saw the secret of the outside world, the one that drove the entire class to despair in chapter five. Gonta isn't as pure as we make him out to be, he is prone to violence as seen a few times throughout the game, and having been raised in the wild with carnivorous wolfs we can speculate that he isn't averse to murder so much. It would make sense that he would agree to a mass mercy killing. Both he and Kokichi agreed that it would be best for everyone to die in their blissful ignorance. Gonta was in fact so willing to do it that he helped by suggesting the idea of the slide to make the murder even more confusing and make Kokichi even more suspicious.
Once again, I'm not sure what plan Kokichi was going for, but, whenever I think back to trial 4 I really get the vibe that he wasn't completely against the mercy killing. I'm not sure how much, but I'm certain that to some extent he was ready to go through with his and Gonta's plan, like he had one foot in the killing plan, and one foot in another plan, and however the trial went he would go.
To summarize up until this point, both he and Gonta saw the secret of the outside world and made an alliance in which they very surely both agreed that death was a better alternative than letting their classmates live and see what had become of the outside world. Kokichi didn't even need to manipulate Gonta for that.
Although I will admit that if Kokichi wanted to test his theory and thought there was a chance the outside world was fine, then he really did manipulate Gonta by making him think that the outside world was destroyed when he himself thought it was a lie. But even in this case Kokichi didn't manipulate Gonta by exploiting his gullible nature, he used a lie that could have worked on anyone, and Gonta just so happened to follow him outside.
Then the part that gets people is Kokichi yelling at Gonta for being stupid till he cries, and just generally being a dick. But get this, in the anthology in the Hair Raising Panic chapter Kokichi realizes that Gonta is tricking them and hiding something. Kokichi of all people doesn't underestimate Gonta's intellect and it's shown many times throughout the game but I won't go into it for now I'll save this for another time. But Kokichi is the type to distrust people for the smallest reason, even in the anthology's no-murder school life AU Kokichi found it in him to get suspicious of Gonta, and now they're in a killing game where each person can be mastermind, murderer, traitor, he has every reason to distrust all his classmates and he doesn't underestimate Gonta's intellect. So from Kokichi's point of view, Gonta is deviating from their plan and betraying him- when he'd thought he could trust him and even made an alliance with him. It's messing with his carefully crafted plans and he can't afford that and there's too much at stake, so he snaps at Gonta. Although I will admit I don't understand what was going through Kokichi's mind when he called him dumb, I'm thinking his evil persona was pushing through and his panic was guiding him, but I still firmly believe that Kokichi was the one student who didn't underestimate Gonta's intellect.
This is getting long and I haven't even finished most of what I've wanted to address. Moving on.
Let's not forget that after the whole trial Kokichi wanted to die with Gonta and voted for himself- but here's the thing into speculation again. I believe I'd he wanted to just die he could have not voted and been punished for that, but he voted for himself. Sooo I think he voted for himself after telling the students about the two blackeneds rule, hoping that either votes would be even for them and thus for him to die with Gonta- or that he hoped too many students would remember the two blackeneds rule and vote for him so he would be wrongly voted as blackened and their mass mercy killing plan would work after all.
Also, you know, in chapter five Kokichi could have made an unsolvable murder by killing Kaito who was gonna die of his illness anyway, but he still chose to kill himself because of two things: the first being that he wasn't anymore malicious than he needed to be so he made a plan that would allow Kaito to shine as the hero he desperately wanted to be, and, well, his immense guilt over killing one of the closest people to him during the killing game- heck, two of the people he considered somewhat friends and allies he could trust a lil.
Before I'm done with the main narrative I'd like to point out one last REALLY IMPORTANT thing; the killing game is a game of distrust where anyone can kill anyone, it puts an insane amount of stress and paranoia on people and drives them to do things they would otherwise never accept. Some relationships couldn't easily happen outside of the killing game (like Kaito and Shuichi) and some happened more easily because of the killing game setting (like Kaede and Shuichi) and some should stay intact in either (like Tenko and Himiko). It's a rather unfair setting to judge people.
Now onto miscellaneous stuff that the killing game setting doesn't affect and should be good enough to judge people and relationships:
In trial 2 I think, Kokichi was the only one to praise Gonta for pointing out something smart (I don't remember what it was though, maybe the rope thing with Kirumi.)
Kokichi was also the one who took Gonta seriously when he talked about seeing tiny bugs and went as far as requesting the bug vac over something everyone forgot and dismissed- even the players themselves. In general, Kokichi is the student who most acknowledges Gonta's intellect.
Kokichi had two main plans and for both he trusted Gonta.
They can also be found often hanging out together- which I think is unprecedented in dr- and from what I remember if you you try to spend your free time with either of them they both hesitate to stop hanging out but get reassured by each other that it's fine and they can pick their discussion back up. So when together they aren't bickering or in an unpleasant discussion and enjoy eachother's company enough to hesitate to spare time for Shuichi. Strong emphasis on the fact that this is mutual, it's not only Gonta being nice enough not to ditch Kokichi or reassuring him that it's fine and he can leave, Kokichi too doesn't wanna ditch Gonta at first and reassures him that they can hang out later together. (As far as I can remember at least, but my memory may be tricking me)
In one of Kokichi's dating events he says that he hates bugs but wants to watch a bug documentary to understand why Gonta likes them. It's a good outcome too so Kokichi had a good time watching it even though he hates bugs.
Again in Hair Raising Panic even if Kokichi suspected Gonta he didn't tell anyone or mess with him and instead let him carry out whatever plan he had, suspicion but trust in the end.
The two have a very bittersweet event in the TDP (Gonta's) where Kokichi says goodbye to Gonta.
Firstly, Kokichi says he isn't eating enough but when Gonta gets worried Kokichi dismisses it as a lie, but Gonta still worries about it and most importantly, thinks Kokichi said the truth about not eating before dismissing it as a lie so he still worries about him. It's… really odd when you think about it, if it had been a lie for sure then it would have been written as such, but Kokichi's malnourishment is being treated in this scenario as the truth and most importantly we're shown that Gonta was able to see that Kokichi said a sad truth and then said he lied but Gonta still saw through that and understood that Kokichi could dismiss a sad truth as a lie not to worry him. This scene always sticks out to me because its writing really really caught me off guard, we don't have so much to say whether or not my interpretation is truth but knowing those two characters and as writer's hunch? I think this holds up well. I think Kokichi isn't as unreadable as people make him out to be and Gonta is smarter than people think he is, add to that the fact that in this event they've been classmates for nearly 3 years so at this point I don't doubt Gonta would be able to see through Kokichi's lies to some extent. I think this is overall really sweet and I'm glad that this scene exists.
But the sweetest has yet to come! Kokichi tells this to Gonta
Kokichi: Cuz we won't see each other after we graduate. I *am* the leader of evil after all. There'd be no point in me being around a gentleman like you m, Gonta. And that's not a lie. Are you relieved, Gonta? You'll never be tricked by someone as despicable as me anymore.
Gonta: How sad! Gonta make lot of memories with Kokichi over last three years… So… of course Gonta feel sad he no see you anymore.
Kokichi: Of course. Well, I'm not a gentleman like you Gonta, so I bid you my farewell.
Gonta: Grgh… Gonta wish that was lie… [You feel even sadder than before]
And you know, this is a graduation event, in most cases one of the three choices is an interaction with someone from v3 cast who is very important in the killing game to the character you're playing. (Kaito with his sidekicks, Kiibo with Miu, I can't remember the rest). We have a clear confirmation here that outside of the killing game, Kokichi and Gonta are very close friends and Kokichi holds Gonta in high regard as a real gentleman who deserves better than a clown gang leader as his friend.
Mic drop.
Now, I've tried to be as objective as possible and point out either canon or interpret the vaguer stuff. I won't say they had a pure beautiful friendship because that would be aaa wrong, and I won't deny that for chap 4 plan Gonta was going to get hurt with that plan no matter what -by being voted as the blackened and thus failing to help everyone with the mass mercy killing, or by succeeding with the plan and being left all alone with his despair and prolly either planning his suicide after that or being taken to participate in season 54 before he could kill himself- and Kokichi most likely knew that his plan would hurt Gonta no matter the outcome, and Kokichi even if he didn't want to still pushed Gonta, his sweet gentleman friend, to murder for him. And he did lash out on him in trial 4 and say nasty things and make him stress and panic then hurt him with his villainous persona. I won't deny canon, actions speak louder than words, and Kokichi's actions, regardless of his intentions, still ended up hurting Gonta. But still in not ignoring canon, it's important to realize that Kokichi undeniably felt insanely guilty for what he did and even wanted to die with Gonta which completely contradicts his leadership quality and selflessness and logical nature (because dying with Gonta would be a meaningless death and would leave his clueless classmates behind with no plan to escape and many leads inaccessible) only because he didn't want to live with his sin, and it's also important not to ignore their many little positive interactions in canon pointed above. I won't speak for canon, but I definitely think their relationships had it's downs but also had it's ups that we really shouldn't be ignoring.
Feel free to point out any mistake I made or share your opinions- but please make sure not to be spiteful and have actual concrete arguments to share, I've spent a 3-4 hours writing and revising this passionately and I don't wanna deal with hate so please be gentlemen like Gonta. Thankie!
(oh cool this time around Tumblr didn't delete this phew now I won't have to re-format everything.)

Among Us Heroes
Chapter Word Count: 3,714
Summary: What are you supposed to do when you wake up trapped in an unknown location, with people you don't know, and are forced to complete a series of bizarre tasks without the use of quirks in order to be set free while trying not to die? Hold on, someone isn't who they say they are?
Izuku Midoriya, Shoto Todoroki, and Katsuki Bakugo need to work together to figure out a way out of this insane experiment before someone dies.
Notes: I've been playing a whole lot of Among Us lately and I couldn't help but wonder how a game similar to that would play out between these three. The only difference is this isn't a game and if they aren't careful, someone will die.
Warnings: Blood and Violence
Quinn's Masterlist!
...
Hushed breaths filled the air. The only other sounds were the eerie creaking of the vents overhead. Izuku worked quickly, his hands racing over the thick wires that controlled the lights and flinched when one of the wires sparked, nearly shocking him. He'd already messed up twice and the complete darkness surrounding them was freaking him out. It had been dark for almost a full three minutes now, anything could've happened.
"How's it coming?" Shoto glanced around them, straining his ears for the slightest sounds. The dim flashlight he was holding over the wires blinked off for a few seconds before he tapped the back and the light weakly fluttered back to life.
"They've been severed. I have to strip them and twist them back together." He mumbled, tying the last two together in the hopefully correct pattern this time. "I don't know how long that'll last though."
"We need to find the others. Bakugo ran off on his own again." Shoto clicked the flashlight off as the pale fluorescents flickered back on above them.
"It's better to stick together, given the circumstances, but teamwork isn't really in Kacchan's vocabulary." Izuku sighed, pulling at the itchy black collar locked around his neck. "It's dangerous alone."
Shoto tucked the little flashlight back into his belt and motioned for Izuku to follow. "Come on, we shouldn't linger here." He stepped out of Electrical, glancing in both directions. The dim hallway was void of life and he couldn't decide if that was more or less unsettling. "Clear, let's go."
The boys had decided early on that it would be safer to stick together, but Katsuki being Katsuki, had decided he didn't need anyone's help and stormed off by himself. His pride might very well be the death of him.
Two pairs of footsteps echoed around them as they walked down the corridor, heading for their next task. If they completed all the tasks, then they would win, they would be set free. At least, that's what the voice on the loudspeaker had told them. Katsuki blew it off, running off on his own saying he'd find his own way out, but after what happened in the Cafeteria earlier, Izuku and Shoto had decided the safest option was to complete the tasks until they could figure a way out for everyone.
"The closest task is in the Engine Room." Shoto had pulled out the small holographic map that highlighted his face in a gentle blue. "There are no windows. Do you think we're aboard some sort of ship?"
"That could be the be case." Izuku shuffled through the contents in his utility belt. "If we are on some sort of ship, then that adds to the dangers of trying to escape. If we were-"
Shoto held out an arm, shutting Izuku up. "Do you hear that?"
Izuku blinked and looked around the dingy hallway, straining his ears. In the distance, they heard the faint sounds of soft footfalls. The light didn't even let them see properly all the way down the hall, like it was meant to obscure their vision.
"Be on guard." Shoto tucked the holographic map back into his pocket and spread his feet into a more defensive position.
A figure slowly emerged from the shroud of darkness, leaning against the wall as they dragged themselves forward. It was a girl, wearing the yellow version of the same uniform they'd all woken up in. Well, it was mostly yellow, aside from the giant splotch of red running down her right side. There was a dazed look in her eyes when she looked up at them.
"Help." She whimpered as her body gave out and she slid down the wall.
The boys glanced at each other before Izuku rushed forward, Shoto following close behind. He caught the girl, who was at least a few years younger than him, before she could hit the ground. Thinking back on it, she was one of the youngest ones here, just a middle schooler dragged into some sort of twisted game.
"What happened?" Izuku helped her sit up against the wall.
"It was Sugi-Sugiyama." She spluttered out, clutching her side. "I don't understand, he would never..." Hair fell in front of her face. "He wouldn't."
"Sugiyama?" Shoto knelt next to her. "The big guy in red?"
She nodded, wincing at the movement. "H-he came at me with a knife right before the lights went out. He was my friend, why would he do that?"
A small alarm went off on their wrists. It was a device that they had quickly learned alerted them to any sabotages. No one was given much explanation when they'd woken up, only that they had to complete their tasks in order to be freed. Only one thing kept running through his mind; their captor, who had only given them the name Sentry, had said not to trust anyone. Was someone not who they said they were? If they did have an imposter among them, trying to kill them, then that meant that they had to find the others- and fast.
"It's communications." Shoto informed them. "We won't have access to our tasks until it's fixed."
"Okay, let's go. Can you walk...uh..." Izuku never got her name.
"Seno." She gave him a grateful smile as he helped her up, letting her lean on him while they walked. "Thanks. Midoriya and Todoroki, right?"
They nodded. No one had gotten much of an introduction before everything broke into chaos after they had all woken up. Only a few names were tossed around before everyone scattered, too shocked to stay together.
"Do you know what this place is?" She asked, limping along with them.
"I don't know," Izuku mumbled, "but it's obvious they want something from us. I'm just not sure what it is yet. The voice, uh, Sentry, said something about a test."
Her breath hitched as she jostled the wound. "Do you think...do you think we're going to die?"
"No." He said firmly. "We're heroes. If we can work together, we can figure this out. We will make it out of here."
"But I'm not a hero like you guys." Her grip around his neck tightened. "I don't know why I'm here. I wasn't even planning on going to a hero school."
"Don't worry Seno," Izuku gave her a confident smile, "you've got us now. We'll protect each other."
She took a shaky breath and dipped her head, hand digging into her bloodied side. "Thanks."
Izuku readjusted his grip. "Let's head to Medbay. There should be some supplies to help with that wound."
Shoto took the rear, keeping a sharp eye on their surroundings. He wasn't going to let anyone sneak up on them; a mistake he'd already made once. The silence roared in their ears as they shuffled down the hall.
It was odd that they hadn't seen anyone in what Izuku deemed too long. The place wasn't overly huge and if everyone else was running around doing tasks, it would only be logical to assume that they would run into each other at least a few times. They'd been alone since the lights went out. Something seemed off (aside from the entire situation) and the issue gnawed at the back of his mind.
When they neared the open doorway, Seno raised her head. "Oh, Medbay." She bit back a groan, pressing her hand further into her bloodied suit. "Good thinking."
Izuku crossed the threshold and the door immediately slammed shut behind him with an angry hiss. He barely had time to dodge the heavy metal that slid in from seemingly nowhere.
"Woah, is everyone oka- Todoroki!" Izuku spun in a circle looking for his friend. He must have gotten locked on the other side. "Todoroki, can you hear me?"
No answer. The doors were soundproof and with no handles, it was useless to try to pry it open. They were stuck until they opened automatically.
Seno slipped away from him, staggering to the wall to balance herself. Her eyes were closed and her breathing turned ragged and panicky. "We're dead." She gasped through shaky breaths. "They've trapped us. We're gonna die."
"No, Todoroki can handle himself and I'm right here." He stepped closer. "We'll be alright, I promise."
She turned to face him, leaning against the wall. "How can you promise something like that? You have no idea what's at stake."
He blinked. "What do you mean? Do you know something?"
"Your smart Midoriya, can't you figure it out?" She gestured to her bloodied suit. "Someone is in here trying to pick us off one by one." A groan drew past her lips and she slid down the wall, curling in on herself. "We're all going to die."
Of course he'd suspected something like this. It was only confirmed once Seno showed up. This Sentry person, whoever he was, had given them a clue. But the question still remained: why?
"No. Not as long as I'm still around." Izuku glanced at the heavy metal door. "I'll get some supplies, just hang tight okay? Ill be right back."
Once she nodded, he turned to the shelves of medical supplies not quite sure what to look for. They'd only been taught basic first aid so far, so anything more advanced was beyond his current capabilities. Medbay wasn't all that large, only consisting of a few rolling shelves full of supplies and a few pieces of lab equipment. He ran down the rows and picked up anything he deemed useful, gathering an armful of bandages, antiseptics, and so on.
"Seno, are you still with me?" He called out, trying to balance a roll of gauze on his pile.
No answer.
"Seno?" He poked his head around the edge of the shelf, only to see an bloody spot on the wall, sans one injured girl. "Seno? Seno, where are you?"
A tingle on his neck was barely enough warning to whip around just as a knife slashed down his shoulder. He dropped the supplies in his surprise and stumbled back bumping into the shelf. The shelves themselves were the plastic movable kind, which provided no support when he hit them. He and the shelf crashed into the ground, breaking a few glass containers that he unfortunately landed on top of.
The angry burning sensation of the knife cutting into his flesh and the pieces of glass poking into his back was thrown on the backburner as he rolled to the side, dodging the second strike.
Above him, Seno, knife in hand, glared down. "You're too trusting Midoriya." She said scolded softly. "A smart person never trusts anyone."
Izuku kicked out his leg, striking her in the knee. She gasped and collapsed backward, dropping the knife in the process. Izuku used those few seconds to jump to his feet, ignoring the fire running down his shoulder.
"What are you doing?" He dropped into a defensive stance when she grabbed the knife and climbed back to her feet. "Seno, stop this."
"No." She said it so quietly, he almost didn't hear. "I can't." Back on her feet, she held the knife out, looking like she might start crying at any minute. "You wouldn't understand. I have to kill you. I'm sorry."
She charged, swinging the knife around wildly. It was obvious she had next to no training with the weapon and Izuku easily countered. He twisted the knife hand until it clattered away and almost on instinct, pulled her arm over his shoulder and threw her down. Her back slammed into the floor and a strangled cry flew from her lips.
"I can't understand unless you tell me!" He yelled, still holding her arm that kept her pinned the ground. "Why are you doing this?"
Thick tears gushed from her eyes and she opened her mouth, but instead of words, a thin black spear-like object shot out so fast he didn't have time to dodge. The barbed tip sunk into his shoulder with a sickening Schunk. He stumbled back, but even the slightest movement tore his skin, sending razor sharp pricks of pain all the way down his arm. He was essentially locked in place, but then, so was she.
If he had his quirk, he would've been fast enough to dodge, but he didn't have his quirk. No one did, well, except for Seno apparently. The heavy metal collars adorning everyone's necks were supposed to suppress any significant use of quirks. Seno's must have been different or it was just for show. Whatever the case, she seemed free to use her quirk.
"Seno," He ground out, gripping the spear so hard his knuckles turned white. "Stop, I can help you if you just tell me."
With that spear sticking out of her mouth, she couldn't speak even if she wanted to. Instead, she reached into her pocket and produced a gun. Her hands were shaky as she pointed the barrel up at him. Lying next to his feet gave her the perfect shot and getting shot from point-blank range didn't exactly stack the odds in his favor.
The door finally clicked and hissed back open. A frazzled Todoroki squeezed through the door before it even finished opening. He took less than a second to take the whole scene in before he rushed forward. "Midoriya!"
Izuku kept his eyes on Seno who was clearly starting to panic. Her finger slipped over the trigger and Izuku did the only thing he could; he ripped the tip from his shoulder with a scream just as the gun fired. Through the haze of pain, he saw one of the lights shatter overhead and glass rain over him. White hot agony spread through his whole torso and he collapsed with a choked gasp.
Seno retracted the spear and scrambled to her feet. There was nowhere to run, she was trapped, or so he thought. She ran for the corner of the room where a floor grate opened up and she slid into it. The metal grate slammed shut once she dropped through and sparked in warning. He couldn't follow, not that he would, there was a more pressing matter to attend to.
Behind him, Izuku had dropped to his knees, curling around his shoulder with eyes squeezed shut, biting his lip to keep from screaming. Todoroki knelt next to him and inspected the wound. The green of his uniform was quickly turning red. He needed to stop the bleeding. Luckily, they were in Medbay.
"Hang on." He rushed to the pile of supplies Izuku had dropped earlier and came back with a handful of things that he laid in front of them. "We have to stop the bleeding."
Outside his bubble of pain, he registered Todoroki's voice, but he was having a hard time understanding him. Hands gently grabbed his arms and he flinched away, only for a new wave of pain to wash over him.
"Midoriya." Shoto was frantically trying to get his attention, but Izuku couldn't seem to pull himself out of that haze of pain. "Stop moving. I need you to look at me."
Izuku scrunched his eyes open to see Shoto's bi-colored eyes staring at him in concern. After a minute, he managed to get his breathing under control enough to glance down at the bloody mess that was his shoulder. It was bleeding way too heavily and soaked straight through the multiple bandages Shoto was pressing on it. He'd been hurt worse plenty of times by now, but he couldn't remember any other injury hurting this much, so what was the deal?
"I need to get more bandages." He grabbed Izuku's hand and put it over the soiled bandage. "Keep pressing, I'll be right back."
Shoto left his vision and Izuku squeezed his eyes shut again, trying anything to dull out the pain. It was as if every nerve on his body suddenly went on high alert. He didn't even realize he'd fallen backward until his shoulder hit the ground, jarring the already sensitive area. His mouth fell open, but the agonizing cry at the tip of his tongue couldn't seem to come out. The pain had effectively muted him.
In no time, Shoto knelt next to him again, ripping open a new packet of bandages and unzipping Izuku's uniform enough to pull the saturated fabric away from his shoulder. Once he wiped the blood away, he saw a nice sized hole right below the collarbone that seemed to have torn out in a gritty star shape. With this much bleeding, it was entirely possible that an artery could've been severed. If that was the case, Izuku would bleed out in minutes at best; at worst, seconds. He needed to stop the bleeding, but how?
"Heat." He mumbled, looking down at his hands. He couldn't use his quirk, so he was all but useless, but maybe something in here could help. "Hold on Midoriya."
He was up again, sifting through the medical equipment like a madman to find what he was looking for. In his haste, he slammed into one of the rollaway shelves, knocking it over. After a desperate search through the cabinets, he found what he was looking for and rushed back to his friend.
"Midoriya," Shoto tapped his cheek to get his eyes open again, they were hazy and his pupils were completely blown. "I need to stop the bleeding. I'm going to cauterize the wound. It's going to hurt...a lot."
Izuku swallowed thickly and nodded, looking more tired than in pain. His body was quickly diving towards shock. Shoto wasted no time in turning on the Bunsen burner and dipping the scalpel he'd found in betadine before holding it over the flame. Once he judged it heated enough he pulled back the bandage, wiped away the excess blood, and poured the rest of the betadine on. Then he stuffed a clean rag in Izuku's mouth.
"Bite on this and hold still." He said and quickly pressed the heated metal flat on the wound for two seconds then pulled it back just as quick.
As soon as the hot metal touched his shoulder, Izuku howled through the cloth and tried to squirm free from Shoto's grip. His breath caught in his throat and a series of muffled coughs followed. Shoto leaned over him, keeping him pinned to the floor as he brought the scalpel back down for a second time and Izuku could only writhe under the pain.
"I'm sorry." He whispered and pushed the metal down for a third time.
When he pulled back, the blood had finally stopped spilling out of the wound. That part was good, but he still needed to see a proper doctor, something they were sorely lacking at the moment.
Izuku went slack which only prompted Shoto to work faster, quickly cleaning the wound and dressing it. He'd lost a lot of blood, so he wasn't entirely surprised that the boy was on the verge of fainting, but that put them in a compromising situation. Seno was still out there and now that her secret was out, they were in danger. If she was smart, she would eliminate the both of them before they found the others. No, if she was smart, she would have shot Shoto. She had enough time, but instead she fled.
"Midoriya, hey look at me." Shoto pulled the rag out of his mouth and tapped his cheek. He squinted open his eyes before they fell shut. "Come on, no time for sleeping. Are you with me?"
A heavy groan rolled from his mouth and he opened his eyes again, trying his hardest to focus on his friend. "S'rry." He mumbled.
"Don't worry about it." He dropped his head with a small sigh of relief. "Can you stand? We can't stay here."
Izuku nodded and tried to sit up, only to immediately fall back with a sharp wince, mouth hanging open in a painful grimace. A few deep breaths and he tried again, this time with Shoto's help. After a few agonizing seconds, he was finally on his feet, leaning heavily on Shoto, clutching his shoulder for dear life.
"Where'd she go?" He managed to rasp out.
"She ran off into the vent." He glanced at the sealed vent cover. "She could be anywhere at this point, but I have a feeling she isn't far off."
His head sagged and he would've fallen over if Shoto wasn't holding him up. "We gotta find the others." His voice was all but a mumble. "Warn them."
The devices on their arms suddenly beeped in tune with the loud warning bells that blared over the flashing red lights. Something big was happening. Shoto shifted Izuku enough to grab the map from his belt. It was glowing the same bright red with the words MELTDOWN flashing across the screen.
"A meltdown. What does that mean?" He muttered.
"I think..." Izuku took a shaky breath. "I think it's the engine. We gotta go there."
"Are you sure you can walk?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." He looked the exact opposite of fine. "Thanks Todoroki...for saving me."
"Don't thank me yet, we're still not out of here."
His eyes drifted over to the vents. He'd seen a lot of vent access points on their way over here. A lot of opportunities for a sneak attack. They really needed to find the others.
Izuku took one step forward and nearly fell over. Shoto managed to steady him and looped his good arm around his neck. "Take it slow. I can't have you passing out on me."
"Don't worry, I've had worse." He chuckled, raising his head just enough to look Todoroki in the eye. "This is nothing."
Shoto gave him a disbelieving look, but kept his mouth shut. Izuku was so pale he was starting to match Shoto's right side. They needed to find a way out of this place before Izuku collapsed for good.
The two limped out of Medbay following the map towards the Engine Room. It was clear across the facility. Shoto would have to stay on constant guard, especially now that Izuku was injured. It was a dangerous trek, but they were left with very little options. All they could do now was survive until this nightmare was over.

do you have any examples of the witcher subverting common fantasy tropes? (other than the obvious like ciri being the chosen one but doing evil actions, the male lead being a pacifist etc) i like the books but i have friends who don't wanna read it bc they think it's just another generic fantasy story based off the netflix trailer, i obviously am not gonna force them to read it if they absolutely don't want to but it always hurts when good works go unnoticed because of misinformation
okay!! i won’t give book quotes for this one, this is just off the top of my head, because i think including quotes would take a really long time and wouldn’t helo the point. also there’s probably things i missed here
geralt
tropes: Icy Cold Killer / Witches Stealing Kids
actuality: is a very emotional man who was born into his profession of killing and never had a choice in the matter. doesn’t want to kill for a living, is a pacifist at heart. adopts ciri because he truly is a good father and loves her and eventually teaches her witcher skills so she has a form of self-defense.
yennefer
trope: Bitchy Witch
actuality: sincerely selfless woman who risks her life multiple times to save her child from harm, does many things to save her lover, only seems bitter and closed off to the most of the world because she has been hurt by everyone she knows and doesn’t let everyone in.
ciri
tropes: Prissy Princess / Chosen One
actuality: she is a princess for approx. 1.2 seconds and then she loses everything she’s ever known, and will continue to lose everything she’s ever known.
as the chosen one, her powers don’t help her much, she’s super powerful but still super vulnerable and her life continues to be shit - she loses everything again because of her powers, which make her a target. everyone is after her for her powers, she’s the macguffin of the story, she’s been reduced to the holy grail because of them. being the chosen one is more of a curse than a blessing.
dandelion
tropes: The Coward / The Freeloader / Slovenly Bastard
actuality: okay yeah he’s all of these things never mind he demonstrates incredible bravery and loyalty (doing something even though you’re scared to death to do it is bravery), he keeps being by geralt’s side not as a nuisance or a leech, but because geralt genuinely needs him there as his best friend.
milva
trope: The Girl of the Company
actuality: isn’t just there to be sexy while shooting arrows, is not a love interest to any of the main male characters, literally just exists in the company as a woman and no one is creepy towards her because of it. pregnancy arc is handled relatively well and she is given actual story and emotions of her own instead of being reliant on any male characters for developent
regis
trope: Every Single Vampire Trope Ever (esp. being heartless/part of an evil organization)
actuality: “the epitome of humanity,” is a healer/medic/surgeon whose profession it is to preserve life, is kind and acts with goodwill.
the vampires in the witcher don’t drink blood to survive like hungry beasts or out of evil cultlike activities, but instead it’s like alcohol to them and they face the same social issues as humans surrounding it. also of course every other vampire trope is broken, like sunlight, garlic, wooden stakes, running water, religious symbols...
cahir
trope: Evil Soldier of Darkness
actuality: he is a young man who was manipulated by his family and his society into service of an imperialist nation, he never wanted to cause harm to ciri but raher just sought honor for his family. he then spends the entire rest of the saga redeeming himself.
angouleme
trope: Shitty Orphan Does Crime For Fun
actuality: she’s an extremely young woman who has faced abuse her entire life and has stolen and killed out of pure survival. she is actually a genuinely good person and warns geralt of the attempt on his and his company’s lives.
the sorceresses who were on thanedd and of the lodge
trope: Vain Women Get Nothing Done And Only Think About Men
actuality: 10 insanely powerful women form a powerful political cabal, at least one is a lesbian, they unanimously decide to bar the organization from men because they speak about how men are too emotional and can’t be trusted, they are capable and dangerous as an organization and would have succeeded if not for freak accidents.
witchers in general
trope: godless fiends who thrive on violence
actuality: they were created as a profession to eliminate monsters as being threats to humans, but the threat of monsters has faded and now finding work is more difficult than ever.
sorceresses in general
trope: witches steal kids
actuality: sorceresses take in unwanted daughters, from families who gave them up, and if they show magical prowess they continue to be trained
the striga (princess adda)
trope: Horrific Monster
actuality: a 14 year old girl who has been mistreated all of her life
a grain of truth
story: beauty & the beast
actuality: the real beast is the beauty who tries to rip her boyfriend’s head off
the lesser evil
story: snow white & the seven dwarves
actuality: snow white is no princess, she has been forced into a life of killing which she has become comfortable with
the last wish (heading into the bounds of reason)
trope: love at first sight
actuality: electrocute your ass at first sight, yennefer and geralt fight in the last wish, and after they fall in love date for 4 years they inevitably break up again because love at first sight doesn’t exist and they’re both too immature to hold a sincere relationship until much later
the bounds of reason
story: a peasant can kill a dragon, dragons are beasts that attack villages
actuality: you’d need professionals to kill a dragon, and also the dragons were trying to protect their child and are sentient, intelligence, respectable, and beautiful creatures.
dudu
trope: Evil Doppleganger
actuality: dopplers are incapable of being evil, they mimic forms to survive in this world dominated by violent humans.
the aen seidhe
trope: Elves Are Pretty Boys Who Don’t Do Violence
actuality: these pretty boys do a lot of violence. they kill humans because humans have usurped nearly all of their territory and pushed them out.
the aen elle
trope: Elves Are Pretty Boys Who Don’t Do Violence
actuality: these pretty boys do a lot of violence. they’re colonizers and slavers who take over entire worlds.
unicorns
trope: Unicorns Are Pretty And Docile Creatures
actuality: unicorns and elves have been at war, unicorns are incredibly intelligent and sentient and are their own civilization
nilfgaard
trope: Evil Empire
actuality: it is an imperialist nation, thus it is evil, but there are many nilfgaardian POVs throughout the saga which demonstrate that even though they are committing atrocities they are still very much human. they’re not faceless evil.
geralt’s company
trope: Grand Quest To Save The World
actuality: geralt in the saga, i think as one of the sorceresses said, is just running around lost, getting upset. geralt running around with his gathered company in the wilderness is not a grand march towards power or fame, but rather the journey of how geralt becomes a better person and a better father, he finally accepts help, he finally becomes a leader.
the quest doesn’t concern power or being a grand hero, it’s not a beautiful march. it’s a bunch of idiots traipsing through the forests, grasslands, and marches, trying to dry out their boots and footwraps because the ground is muddy.
the goal of the quest is not to save the world or find great power or complete a prophecy or save a desperate lover, but rather to just get geralt’s daughter back. his daughter. because he loves her and wants her to be safe. that’s all.
you can’t step two inches in the witcher without breaking a trope. they’re strewn everywhere, like crackers on the sidewalk. step, step. now the pigeons are eating the crumbs
i think largely you have to look at sapkowski’s personal history with writing and fantasy bc iirc he was a scholar or something about arthurian legend and also he was influenced by many polish folktales

With only two episodes left to Season 2 of The CW series Roswell, New Mexico, questions are piling up and everyone is desperate for answers, as the town welcomes CrashCon and Liz (Jeanine Mason) and Max (Nathan Parsons) find themselves trying to piece together who’s behind a potentially deadly plan targeting the popular festival. Before all is said and done, there are sure to be life-or-death stakes to survive, heart-wrenching choices to endure, big moves to make, and loose ends to be tied.
During this 1-on-1 phone interview with Collider, actress Jeanine Mason talked about what it was like to make it to Season 2, getting to have a much deeper understanding of her character, what she’s learned about leading a TV series, seeing Liz come to terms with the fact that she can’t solve every problem, having her past come back into her life, the affect CrashCon will have on Roswell, her reaction to the Season 2 finale, and how Shiri Appleby has inspired her.
Collider: You’ve previously talked about doing seven pilots and a couple of TV shows that only had one season. What was it like to learn that you’d have a second season for this show, and then to also now have a third season pick-up?
JEANINE MASON: It’s crazy. It’s so bonkers. I’ve been hoping for this, for so long, that it was so cool to get that pick-up news. It’s layers of confronting the excitement and the nervousness, of course. But the most honest one for me was, I sat down, as I do every year, to work with my acting coach, who’s half of my brain, and in our first session, we started breaking down the script and I said, “Okay, so in the pilot . . .” I assumed it was the pilot again, instead of Episode 201, and he was like, “No, no, no, this is 201.” I was like, “Oh, my god, it’s 201. We’ve gotten to 201. This is crazy!” It was awesome. That was my personal favorite moment, in which it hit me that this was no longer starting from the beginning. We were getting to move forward from having a really deep understanding of these characters.
From what you just said, clearly your acting coach is important to you. Was that something that you sought out having? Was that something that you always felt like you wanted to have there for you?
MASON: It’s the way that I’ve always worked. It’s the way I was, as a dancer, as well, before this. I’m just someone who operates as an athlete, as well as an artist, in whatever I’m doing. So, it makes sense to me to have coaches. It’s also a celebration of the collaboration of it all, which is ultimately my favorite thing about this. Different people contribute and are pieces of the puzzle, and to see it all come together, it’s not just one person’s effort, so it makes sense to me to get the opinions of the people that I admire most. Along with my acting coach, I have a good girlfriend, who’s an actress, an activist, and a Chicana. I’m Cuban, so she’s another person that I lean on, a lot. She’s been indispensable for me in this process, as well. I’m just someone who loves the collaboration of it and loves having help. I love leaning on people.
How does it feel to return to a show where you’ve already set up the character, in the first season, and established these relationships that she has? What’s been the most fun about digging even deeper, in the second season?
MASON: The most rewarding thing about it has been the moments in which it really pays off, on set. We all are in a groove now, and the moments in which Lily [Cowles] will suggest a joke for Isobel, and it gets a reaction out of myself and Liz that we can possibly feel, is spot on. That’s the best feeling in the world. That is Season 2. That is the delight of having a second round.
This is also your first time leading a show. Does that get any easier in Season 2, or is it even more challenging, as they give you more because they know you can do more?
MASON: I think they would say that they’re definitely doing that, and I love it. I feel like I’m more confident and I’ve acquired a lot of skills from Season 1, that I am more proficient at now. That being said, the nature of this job is that there’s always more to learn, and I’m learning, every day, things that are just taking it up a notch. It’s asking me to be a better and more consistent number one, and I love that about this, so much. The most rewarding bit of this job has been seeing how much being in this leadership position teaches you. I always knew that. I always knew, of course, you’re gonna learn, and you’re gonna have more time on camera, more say, and more of an impact, but actually being in it, it’s insane to me. Every day, I go to work nervous because I know it’s like, “Okay, let me try to be on my game,” because I know new things are gonna be asked of me, and that’s huge. I feel like I lead every season, like an acting titan. It’s great.
Did you also have to figure out how to mentally and physically keep that up? When you’re doing 13 episodes a season, and each one has to have the same level of energy as the last one, how do you keep that consistent? Does your dance background help with that?
MASON: My dance background helps so much with that. I am so grateful. I remember being in dance class and having my teacher say to me and to all of us that, regardless of where we wanted to go or what we wanted to do, this was preparing us. I really do believe that athletics, but particularly dance, because it’s the athlete and the artist together, in a way that doesn’t really exist much, except for maybe ice skating, and I’m always amazed by the way that prepares me. I think the mindset stuff is the biggest, and that is my dad’s realm. He’s just fed me a little bit of that sports mentality, for years. Even on set, people will laugh because our camera operator and I will be talking about something and I’ll equate it to baseball, but that’s my dad. That’s the way my brain works. I’ll be like, “Okay, let’s give it another at bat.” When it gets tough and people get tired, that’s when people start to get sloppy and that’s when I can trust that I will stay on the straight and narrow. That’s a huge relief to me because then I know that I can utilize the rest of my brain to try to connect to that ephemeral thing of, can I give a great performance?
You’ve said that you knew, early on, that Max was going to die at the end of the season and that Rosa was going to be resurrected. What was your reaction, when you first heard that, and how do you feel now about the way that all played out and how that’s affected the second season?
MASON: I loved it, immediately. I thought it was so brave and that it honored the sci-fi nature of our show, but it felt impossible to connect to that amount of grief and elation, and the blurry way that they cross over each other. I immediately got excited about trying to figure that out for Liz and trying to play with that big of an event. That’s the cool thing about doing a sci-fi show. You get these big stakes moments that very rarely exists in shows that are just about mere mortals. Acting wise, it’s just like the Olympics. So, that felt really exciting for our show, and I was pumped about it. And then, the way it played out, I thought was quite brave, as well, and right for Liz, in that it was such an immediate thing for Max to save her, as the catalyst for our show and our pilot episode, but it’s not as immediate for Liz. We were able to get those five episodes of her and the Scooby gang bringing him back to life, and I loved every bit of seeing her work through her grief and her frustration, and having that fuel her work. It felt really human and honest, in an impossible situation.
Now, the two of them both have things that they’re dealing with, that Liz can’t really help them through. They have to get through these things they’re dealing with on their own. What’s it like for her to have these two people that she loves, back in her life, but also see them going through these things that she can’t really help them with?
MASON: It’s so hard for Liz. She likes to be able to take care of people, and she’s a problem solver. When it comes to her people, the woman will mountains, without question. So, for her to not be able to solve this for them, kills her, but she has to learn. That’s what I love about a protagonist that’s truly on a journey. I’m so sick of shows, where there’s nothing to be learned or earned for your protagonist. She has to let go. She has to realize that this is Rosa’s journey, and as much as she wants to be like, “Sit here and let me make it work,” Rosa is like, “Girl, I’ve gotta go to rehab. Lemme be.” Rosa is right, and Liz is learning. It’s really fun to watch her try.
Liz has had to deal with the return of Rosa, the return of Mama Ortecho, and now Diego is back in her life. What’s it like for her to have her past reuniting with her present? How is she able to handle all of that, with everything that she’s been through?
MASON: Yeah. What I loved about Mama Ortecho and Diego coming right now is that, we all go through changes and every decade we can notice shifts, but the shift that has happened in Liz’s life, in this two-year period is the biggest thing that’s ever happened to her. She was so closed off. She was someone who kept you at arms length. She was someone who was used to running. She was someone who felt very abandoned. The first season is her heart getting pried open. So, for the two of them to come in, it really felt like whiplash. It might have just been a year, but she’s such a different person now. So, that was really exciting to me. It was fun to imagine the little flashbacks with Diego, where we could go back to her life pre her return to Roswell, pre-Max, pre knowing there are aliens in the world. To see her then, you really get a sense of how far you’ve already been with her, how far you’ve seen her go, and how happy you are for where she is right now. I liked that it clued the fans back into that.
I think it’s fun that you’ll be having a CrashCon episode (Episode 212), which pays homage to the original series and their UFO Convention episode. What can you say about having this convention in town, the attention that brings, and how that’ll affect the story?
MASON: Oh, man, it’s so fun. It’s gives you so much OG Roswell nostalgia. It’s pretty great. There are a couple of really fun Easter eggs, and we just kept dying on set, every time we encountered posters that said things. We were just like, “That’s really good. Good work, writers.” It’s huge. What I love about The CW is that there’s always an episode, or a pair of episodes, centered around a big event. Last year, we had the gala, and this year, it’s this. Small town events are massive. Everybody’s out. With the amount of extras and the costume pieces, and the creativity of our wardrobe department and our props department, in dressing everybody in alien and sci-fi and actual properties that get little nods, I think it’s gonna be a feast for the eyes. I think it’s gonna be so visually beautiful. I was impressed. I read a script and get so excited by the writer’s ideas, and then we get to set and we try to figure out the logistics, three times over, and how to do it justice and do right by the excitement of the words. These last two episodes, that happen in the convention/carnival, exceeded everything that I had imagined and it was incredible to see. I can’t wait for people to see. I really think the last two episodes are gonna have people on the edge of their seat.
Without giving away spoilers, what was your reaction to reading the finale and seeing how things would end up for this season, and how do you think fans will react to it?
MASON: The beautiful thing about this season is that things have been weaving in and out, and so much has been set up, in a way that fans are conscious about it. There’s so much stuff that you wouldn’t have thought twice about, that’s gonna come back, and there are so many people that we’ve met, even in passing, who are gonna have such prominence, in the last two episodes. They’re so full. So much is connected and a lot is revealed, in terms of the mythology of our world. But then, there are also personal decisions made that are heartbreaking and that are really not where some characters thought they would find themselves, for sure not at the beginning of the season and definitely not even a week before this whole convention goes down. I’m proud of the decision that characters make, to look out for themselves, but it definitely sets us up for a lot of complication to sort through in Season 3.
Max has been finding out some new and unexpected things about his alien side. Will we also see that affect his relationship with Liz?
MASON: Yeah, absolutely. That’s a lot of what I’m trying to dance around. I’ve gotten some little hints, as to where we’re going for Season 3, and our show is about otherness. That’s what it is and has been, from day one, and feeling other. You can’t help but wonder when you’ll be satiated and when you’ll feel like you have enough information, either in front of you or historically, to feel like you’re happy with where you are. Ultimately, a lot of our characters are still asking those questions for themselves.
Have you also started to have conversations about how to go back to work and make sure that it is safe for everyone?
MASON: Absolutely. It’s been really inspiring to see the way that everyone is so willing to be creative and to take it very seriously, to figure out a way that we can get back to work, but do so safely. Everyone is just guessing, right now, and a lot of the suggestions range in possibilities, but the main thing we’re all saying is that we’re grateful that we’re now going to be a Season 3 show. We feel confident and we feel like we got in such a groove by Season, as a production, that I’m excited we’ll be able to get back to set. Even in honoring all of the protocol that we have to, I feel like we’ll be able to just connect back to the well-oiled machine that we are now. That is just a really gorgeous gift.
What’s it been like to be directed by Shiri Appleby? She’s been an actress for many years, she’s led a show more than once, herself, and she even played Liz in the original Roswell series. What sort of insight do you feel that gives her, as a director, that makes her different from everybody else?
MASON: The woman is a dream. People always ask me about what’s been the most surprising thing about being number one, and the most surprising thing is that I like it. I didn’t know how it would feel on me, and I love it. I hope to have a career like Shiri, where I get to do this again and again. I admire her because the reason she’s had that career is because she’s such a boss. She is 100, constantly. The woman is a machine, and it’s really just inspiring to be around her to see her life force at work. I’m a huge Shiri Appleby fan. I cannot wait for her to be back for Season 3, to direct us again. Every time she’s there, it’s fun to just pick her brain and get her advice. ’m living in New York now, and that was something I read by Shiri. She was like, “Oh, hell yeah, go to New York.” And I was like, “Okay.”
Has she inspired you to want to step behind the camera, at some point? Is directing something that you’re also looking to do?
MASON: Yeah. I’ve directed for stage. I love it, and I wanna do more of it. As of late, I’ve gotten more inspired. I think it’s also because I’m in New York and, prior to the pandemic, was seeing so much theater. I’m excited about just getting involved out here more, and finding my people out here. So, directing for stage excites me. It just brings back my dancing and all of the things I love about physicality and relation. I love the medium and the palette that is the stage. I’m excited about that, right now. But, we’ll see. Maybe, eventually, working with the camera will be exciting. To be honest, where I’m at right now, in my journey, is excitement about working with directors that I love. That will be next, hopefully.
Do you have a dream list of directors that you’d like to do a project?
MASON: Oh, man, so many. I would love to work with Guillermo Del Toro. He has such a love of cinema and a love of movement, and I love his brand of magic. I would love to play in his movies. It would be so fun. I have a lot of film aspirations. That’s the next frontier. I’ve always had aspirations to work with great filmmakers, absolutely, but now, it’s changed to great filmmakers who seem like a great time. I’m getting older. My 30s are coming, and what I really wanna do is spend my time, preciously. I wanna be with my family, and if I’m gonna be working, then I wanna be working with legit and delightful people. Hopefully, that’ll be the 30s.

Just watched 13 Reasons Why S4
Ended up making a full blown commentary per episode because this is finally the last season and I’ve been enjoying this mess since S1. I even forgot that it was released until a friend brought it up to me. So in short,
Ep1
OKAY WHO DIES AGAIN HUH??
Clay, narrating: *I'm good at hiding shits so my parents don't notice at all." His parents: *concernedly looking at him pale and mushing food on the dining table*
The concequences of investigating murder cases and creating conspiracies instead of studying your ass off because it's a damn school really caught up huh.
Charlie holy shit I love you he's so chill and good.
It's been years I still can't believe Justin is really adopted by the Jensens. Funny that now the table is reversed, with Justin finally actually doing better and taking care of the increasingly-ill Clay.
SCOTT!! OH MY GOD! SCOTT REED!! OH MY FUCKING GOD!! AAAAAAAAAAAAA HOLY SHIIITTTTTTTTT AAAAAAAAA!!!
Wow my headcanon is approved, he already graduated by S3. No reason he didn't hang out with the gang after all the shits in S2 if he was no longer around in the first place.
He's still so nice even in Clay's trippy nightmare. Is that what Clay remembers about him? Well not really surprising, considering Scott actually was worried about him in S2.
Good god finally Clay meets a therapist- Wait a minute that's the guy from CSI:NY?!?! Isn't Clay just gonna get clobbered instead.
Okay I knew they are really close and I do adore their relationship so much but HOLY SHIT THEY ACTUALLY GO AT IT WITH ALEX AND ZACH???
Alex: *panicking over the kiss* Zach: Ayy don't worry let's just continue perhaps-suicidally hanging out on dangerous rooftops that you were almost fall to your death from. Alex: ????
Ep2
That narration of Clay ranting about college applications. I'll drink to that bruh.
Ya I too make my applications and other supposedly important matters at 3AM instead of any other more sensible time.
Oh my fucking god that is the creepiest smile I've ever see.
I feel like as Justin gets better and better with his life, Clay goes worse.
Justin is so excited about going to college! You deserve the future man.
The old-time stoners and drunkards are rehabbed or dead. Enter Zach.
Winston: *eyes and ears up to your shit 24/7*
Nobody likes Tyler in S1 but now everybody likes him.
Okay. Cops doing shit jobs at protecting. This feels too real with this situation right now.
Clay's adventure to put the trash into the trash bin.
Omg they got the paint to the lab this is going real CSI.
Idk about u but at this point I don't exactly want to pay attention to Jessica/Justin problems anymore.
I know Zach and Clay don't get along and that's why I need their adventure together.
Clay drunk-puking on Justin. Well well well how the turntables.
The return of Monet!!
"I have 2.8. If I work hard, I'll get 2.9" Winston omg same.
Tht held gaze between Alex and Winston.. Is this slow burn fanfiction???????
Yes Mr. CSI it will definitely get worse.
I know writing about your feelings can make you feel better but probably not in your college essay form.
Ep3
I'm starting to think Clay is the one who dies in the end? Idk tho.
I guess the toll of busting ass trying to save everyone by yourself is catastrophically high, huh, Clay? Funny that he now goes from 100 in S3 to 0 in here and that's actually realistic.
Alex and Winston are really pining each other with Zach in the background lmao.
"You don't wanna go on the Valentine Dance with me? Even as friends?" Well sometimes there are moments when you just don't go back to being friends. It's an actual normal thing.
And besides the last time Alex goes with Jess for something she wanna do, he ends up murdering somebody. So.
"Hey Zach. Hey punch me. Hey you pussy now? Hey hey. Bitch." *poke* *poke* *poke*
No Zach he's trying to save all of your asses. You can't just say that.
Charlie is really just there trying to do his best in this shitshow and like Justin I wanna laugh but also am proud.
Everyone: *being paranoid and unto each other* Alex and Winston: *having the date of their life*
I wish everyone doesn't have this level of trust issues but then again we won't have a shitstorm drama like this.
When did this become "what is love?" philosophy class?
"You know love but you love so fiercely and sometimes it hurts."Wow Mr. CSI you hit the mark.
How many parties can the Liberty High hold in a year?
"You go with Charlie to get back to Justin, right?" Wow Diego you HIT the mark.
I still have problems with Ani as a character, but I do like her casual banters with Clay.
You know, with all these trust issues, I'm surprised nobody actually tries to peek on other's phone. Like, I know that's low. But, you know, faster solution. And better than having mass hallucinations.
Oh God the football team really is a bunch of jerks. Good fucking thing Scott is outta here.
Alex and Winston almost die like couples in a cheap slasher movie.
"Fuck Love." Clay Jensen, 2019 (according to the movie timeline)
Ep4
Why is Charlie talking? Why is he wearing the football jersey? Who on earth dies?? Is it Zach? Justin? Somebody else from the football team? But the content of your speech man...
Ah yeah. Clay did survive a great big deal of many ugly shits. Single-handedly thanks to adrenaline, mostly.
Jess got a point tho. Ani could have followed Clay to stop him, by herself or with the gang. What did she do? She spied on Winston and Alex, and then went back to the dance. So much for handling anything themselves.
Or maybe, the gang shouldn't have let Ani and Clay take care of it themselves.
Does anybody in this show ever figure out Clay has dead people hallucinations?
Domestic Jensen family is my everything.
Charlie really out there bribing Zach with his homemade cookies I-
Ah yeah, I kinda forgot that in reality Alex and Winston have a really difficult situation. With Bryce and Monty stuff.
"Looking back on your time at Liberty, do you have any regrets?" Really? Isn't that all they have?
"Who do you trust most in your life and why?" Everybody: *immediately side-eyeing each other*
Clay c'mon wtf Justin is really just worried sick and trying to help you. Aaand he's gone.
Jess you don't put your hands into something without checking it first...
Why would you only send 2 adults to supervise 30-50 kids on a camping wildlife trip? They wouldn't be able to do shit.
"I thought you were a football player!" "I AM a football player! And so are YOU!" Gold.
Dream!Monty and Dream!Clay really sit like that and I almost laugh were it not for the fact that I do that too. It's strange to see that for once, they talk normally, heart-to-heart, without the usual snickering, chiding, all that venom.
Oh shit they really make Monty and Clay mirror each other like that. They both protect people they love but have tendencies to snap, one way or another.
Zach, dude, I know you've been a real good friend. But Alex almost died. Twice. Because of your drunken ways. And you laughed. Didn't you spend an entire season trying hard to not let him die again? What's wrong with you?
When did this become a horror movie?
The Standalls :((
CHARLIE MY MAN WITH HIS COOKIES. And incidentally, a wild Zach appears.
"So are we gonna fall apart or trust each other now!" Justin my man.
Clay dude that would have been an amazing entrance were it not for the fact you looked insane.
I can't fucking believe they just go normally at campfire like that. Two people almost died. Several got beaten. What the fuck.
Does it come from the bottom of your heart or it doubles as a threat, Clay?
Alex you had us at the first half not gonna lie.
GR A NO LA CA MP C O OKIES? ??
Wait. So who has been fucking around with the football team? Who moved Clay?? Huh??
Ep5
GUYS THERE IS A THING CALLED GPS ON THE PHONE?? What are you? 3?
Justin finally breaking down after 5 episodes being the most decent and healthy person around. Well Charlie is too but he's new, so.
Finally an obligatory meeting at Monet.
CYRUS AND THE PUNK GANG!!! God I love you guys where have you been. And you guys are computer geeks?!?!?! Perfect.
My question exactly, Clay. Good replies tho, Cy.
I'm still thinking how for a nerd, Clay knows A LOT of people and knows who to ask what.
"How am I even friends with you?" Ya Alex that's my question too. How are you suddenly bff with Zach? I don't remember you two being close in S1?
Hm. If you aren't holding his family at stake, there is no way Tony would even think to rat out.
Mr. CSI starts going CSI on Clay.
I almost forgot Charlie's last name is St. George. The cast goes by Charlie mostly so.
Justin really shows up at the party with the angry mom pose and disappointed look at Clay. The turntable, people. Flynn's voice got raspy.
Oh no no Clay you don't go there. Please don't split my Jensen-Foley brothers like that. Meanwhile the punk gang be like just watching there.
C O O KI E S??? Goddamn Charlie do you bring cookies everywhere you go??
Charlie my boy you T_T I was kinda suprised that the cookie baking actually had a sad backstory.
Clay-Zach bonding that I fucking wish for oh yeah. I definitely didn't expect it with piano and drunk singing tho.
While Clay is having the time of his life, Tony is seeing life flashes in his eyes.
Yassss he winssss!!!!
Caleb's expression when the sherrif hugs him lmfao
Nice try Sherrif but Tony knows your tricks.
"What of any of this is okay?" Wow things you'd never hear Justin says in S1.
Meanwhile, Charlie and Alex are high on weed cookies as fuck. Their conversation is the most interesting thing I've seen beside the Scott cameo till now.
The look on Justin's face when Clay pushes him :((
MY DUDES HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN ABOUT JEFF'S DEATH? WHAT HE WAS ACCUSED FOR?! You do not, under any circumstances, drive drunk.
Ep6
Clay be spitting truth.
They really be discussing Clay's chronic hero syndrome huh.
Okay. Operation Clay-Zach failed.
Weren't Zach all fuck it all yeah! kinda guy? Guess when you are the one who faces death it's not that fun anymore huh.
"One Clay Jensen is enough" Jess truth.
Do Alex and Charlie really study Spanish in front of Tony who is not helping at all? That would be embarrassing lmao.
Clay: Fuck off. Hallucination!Monty: *sits next to him*
Gotta hand it to Timothy Granaderos. He could go venomous to puppy eyed in 1 second. Amazing.
Man. School shootings are fucked up. There are many things I wonder about mankind and one of them is why is school shooting even possible?
Hallucination!Bryce: Hi I’m sorry I’m late. I hear this is time for Clay’s dead people hallucination party.
"Are you a hero or a martyr?" Wow they really throw the question.
And here is Clay sitting under the desk between his two most hated dead people hallucinations whispering moral dilemmas to him.
Meanwhile Winston and Zach got high.
Charlie helping Alex to breath.
The talk with Estella and Tyler.
"No offense, you are cool, but I don't wanna die with you." Zach chill lmao.
Are.. Are you sure outing that to Winston is a good call, Zach? For a guy who was super paranoid that his gang would narc him, he sure is loose mouthed himself.
I like how everyone from Tyler to Zach to Winston, admits that Alex is a really kind guy.
Wow Tony did you really expect anyone could do anything in that situation, in fucking Evergreen situation, for that matter?
Charlie is a great friend wow.
Cl-CLAY DON'T GO OUT that is EXACTLY what you are NOT supposed to do!!!
Goddamnit Clay. Holy shit Clay.
Dylan Minnette really worked hard in this scene.
.......... WAIT A MINUTE IT'S NOW ACTUALLY CHARLIE ALEX????? Tony be just walking in.
Ep7
Clay really got into a psych ward. Talk about darkest hour. And it’s only ep 6?
Wow Ty that's some brave lines.
Which hallucination-induced person is Clay talking to before Ani gets there?
Ok that therapy session made me tear up.
These kids are having college interviews at the worst time possible. They are all fucking breaking down one way or another.
And Charlie just, really never gives up on Alex huh.
What's most important to Clay is his friends. Real quick to answer that question huh.
God Justin lashing out at the Jensens. It's the first time he does it and it hurts.
Zach holy fuck. I appreciate you didn't out it but holy fuck you didn't have to do that are you trying to die
Clay-Tony combo is back baby I miss them so much. Although perhaps Tony you would mind a bit about Clay's health because clearly he was out of it.
This is so short. I too really don't like application essays and interviews and the inevitable revisit of the sadder parts of my life because of them.
Ep8
When did this become sci-fi apocalyptic story?
God I miss the time when Clay's dreams are just Inception-styled trippy shit with Scott randomly says hello and gets him water.
Okay. Everyone's got their own way to cope with existential and moral crisis huh.
You know what, I would like one movie out of this sci-fi dream.
I knew it Tyler was a bait to smoke out illegal gun dealers. Is that... An okay thing to do for a high schooler? Sounds fucked up, all things considered.
Yaaay Justin's got the college! I'm super happy!
Wow Estella good question.
Wow Tyler good statement. If they trust each other a bit more, everything would have been a bit better.
Ah shit. Justin relapses again.
Does Tony need to be pummelled first before he finally goes all off to finish his opponent or what?
Is this going Big Brother Is Watching
What the fuck. That locker fight scene is disgusting.
Jess and Clay might throw shades at each other but together they share one brain cell.
"I think it's a walkout, Sir" Tyler lmao
Wow Zach and Alex heart-to-heart.
Cyrus really steps on some pedestal to make his point.
Aaand Zach and Alex really go all out on "doing it right" huh.
They really have students vs cops riot at this time. Talk about timing.
It's nice to see the punk gang enjoying the fighting again.
Dude what happens if you don't have anything on your bag tho.
Aaaah the punk gang with Tyler again!!
"Why are you with me and not with Charlie?" Zach ouch that hurts.
Zach no no no Zach get out of there too Zach pls
Clay really becomes 2nd in command to Jess huh.
Charlie tries to save Clay but gets whacked on the head instead.
Tony you came back!! Oh so that college scout was.. Oh.
Oh shit Clay. Oh. Shit. I should have realized that. Goddamn.
Ep9
"I like sleep." Charlie me too.
God Alex and Charlie literally sleep together jaldjwaownaljewoalsj that some cute shit.
Wow Clay really takes Mr. CSI's advice to round up the gang and confesses. That's a step.
Charlie sometimes has a good idea, huh.
The Jensens meeting is probably the reason why the idea of parenthood scares me.
Also Clay and Justin really put the practice of "tell the parents the less-harsh-but-still-harsh truth, then ask them to get prom back" by the book. And it's awkward.
Aww Charlie coming out to his dad and the response he gets... When you put the rich fams like Dempseys, Walkers and Saint Georges together, the last one is really the only healthy one huh.
Way to go Jess!
Ah I forgot Alex has an older brother.
Aaaahhh Charlie has dinner with the Standalls! Their reaction is so sweet!
"Does he make you happy?" "Yeah. A lot." AHDKWJWOAKDUWLAOEL I mean after everything that has happened to Alex, man I am so happy he can say that with a fond smile.
WHAT THE FUCK HAHAHAHHA CHARLIE WHAT THE FUCK HOLY SHIT LMFAO I THOUGHT THIS WAS JUST AN TRIPPY ANIMATED IMAGINATION THING and Alex is so done with his extra shit.
Wow Ani you do karaoke good, asking Jess out even better.
OH MY GOD IT ESCALATED. Also Alex is right that one is creepy Charlie.
I thought by special doughnut Caleb means some diet-related stuff fit to Tony's menu for fighting. Why didn't I expect a literal Will You Go To Prom doughnuts?
CHARLIE PLEASE STOP AHAHAHAHA you dumb rich kid where did you get all those lamps and prop candles.
"Would you love me any less?" Aww Clay knows Justin loves him.
"You three all look adorable" Ya Jess, same.
Tony really out there doing the "I'm here because he's here" to Caleb.
Clay, Alex, and Charlie be like judging Zach hard.
Oh right that one kid from Cyrus's gang is gay and he brought his boyfriend!
Zach: You two sitting here like it's a funeral. Also Zach: *proceeds to continue sitting as well*
"We deserve to live." Finally something from Zach's mouth that I can agree for this season.
I love that Tony and Caleb are such good friends to Clay.
And now it's Winston turn for dead people hallucination.
..... The door to the other side again.. :'''((
CHARLIE AND ALEX WON THE PROM KINGS AAAAAAHHHHHH I mean with all those extra efforts, it'd be hard to not to. And there goes Alex finally giving in to dance.
I don't like Luke the football guy when he's the enemy but I like him when he's a friend. He's a hype man lmao.
Alex I'm so happy for you man. I'm glad you are finally happy. My heart was tight at the dance part .
Everyone: *dances* Clay: *sits there, monologuing philosophically*
I like that Clay and Ani finally being honest that they don't fit each other romantically. As romance goes there is not much romantic tension between them. And they have way too many flawed traits that when paired, would turn the relationship sour and possibly toxic in the end.
Justin do u like to show up and make everyone step aside for you or what.
I like that Clay was just watching from a distance. Then at last minute decided to join the crowd with his mother, whom he had a few trust issues with in all seasons.
Charlie: "Foundry's gay?!" Alex: "Mind's blown" Me: Same.
There has been nothing wrong going on in one episode, aside from the Zach one that's timely stopped by Charlie and Alex. I'm suspicious.
Ah. Yes. Of course.
Oh my god Justin's the one dead huh?
Ep10
Oh thank God he hasn't died. Yet.
Oh God Justin no. No no no.
Get your shit together Zach. Even Charlie tells you that.
No no no not like this not after everything oh god.
Somebody would you actually please run after Clay too.
Oh my god Clay.
Oh my god Alex you. Even when he admits it to Winston, he still covers for Jess. I- oh god.
It's been only 15 minutes and it hurts.
Charlie and Alex, the moms of the group.
You know, for a guy who says he doesn't love Justin, Alex gives a lot of shit about him. I guess you can still be around people you don't like?
I know the kiss is huge news Charlie but that's not the issue here lmao.
Zach: *hugs Clay* Clay: ????? Alex and Charlie: ?????? Zach: *pats Tyler's head* *leans on Clay*
The Padillas :''')
Clay Jensen. Class speaker. Wow.
Yeah Mr. CSI's voice is really calm, rather chilling, actually.
"You've looked at death too many times for a young person." Damn right Mr. Jensen.
Ah so that's the reason why Zach stole that letter. Makes sense, emotionally.
You know, I did say Idc anymore about Justin/Jessica problems but when it gets to this point, I can't not care.
So many people come to the hospital...
Clay and Justin's talk. I'm sorry I can't hold it in anymore. I'm fucking sobbing at this moment.
He's dead. He's dead. He's dead just like his mom. But he died not in the same way. He died holding his bro's hand. He died surrounded by his family. He died with people who loved him around.
"After everything, this is how it ends." Fucck
DID HE HAVE TO DIE??? DID JUSTIN FOLEY-JENSEN HAVE TO DIE?? Did you really have to put yet another sucker punch in the last episode of the season?? Yeah I know real kids and people do die from AIDS but really? After a whole season of Clay screaming kids wants to live to the point he lost his mind???
I spent the entire funeral screen crying. I couldn't even scream again when Scott is present in the funeral. I know he'd be there but god I can't right now.
Mr. CSI sure knows super effective ways to make Clay react.
"If Justin's dead, the none of the rest of it matters. " Clay..
He opens up.
Oh yeah I forgot Charlie is a junior.
AAAA COURTNEY AND RYAN ARE HERE!!! I MISS YOU GUYS!!!!!
SCOTTTTT!!!!!! And CHLOE TOO!! It’s nice that they come together. But they aren’t like, together, right? I mean if he is her boyfriend she would say his name right away to Zach instead of a mere ‘would you like to meet him? He’s outside.’
These 4 are such good friends to attend their friends’ graduation ceremony.
The punk guys in toga are so... Refreshing to look. Such hype men.
"It's easy to hate. It's easy to fear. It's goddamn hard to love. But it's not optional. It's essential." Jessica Davis, everybody.
Jeff, Hannah and Justin really died in the span of 2 years. Add to that is Bryce and Monty, whose deaths left uncountable traumas on top of existing traumas. Yeah. It was hellish time.
Scott’s proud small smile when Clay gives his speech. Im love.
"Choose to live. Even on the worst day, life is a pretty spectacular thing." Clay Jensen, everybody.
Ma boi Zach really teared up at Clay's speech.
Luke and one of the punk kids talking about some geek thing I am not familiar with I-
“No offense Luke. You’ve got great arm but you haven’t been known for your brain.” PETER That BURNS LMAO
Poor Winston just being alone. OH HELLO RYAN YOU ARE FAST.
Zach is gonna study music! Nice foreshadowing since he plays a lot of music this season.
Clay having a gratitude moment with his parents and Scott be like munching cupcakes in the background.
Oh god Hannah ...
Wow the old tape gang is here!! The nostalgia hurts.
They bury the tapes on the same hill again asdfwosaiofai.
Kinda salty Sheri and Scott aren’t here. But then again I guess back then Scott was just helping Clay and co when he could and mostly minding his own business. HOWEVER isn’t Sheri like in the tape and pretty prominent too :(( Like she was really cool with Clay (despite the whole guilt over Jeff), tried to make amends and really helped with the polaroid cases.
Also you can't just insert Scott in Clay's dream and then not have them interact in the end. The dream was such a perfect bait. Like we know at least they apparently get along well.
Everything in Jessica’s final conversation with her Bryce hallucination. Everything in it.
Ryan: “Gordon Lightfoot?” Ha Ryan you miss a whole lot of drama.
Fuck I'm tearing up again at Justin's essay. He deadass makes an entire essay about Clay and how he is his savior I-
Oh my god they end it exactly like S1 with Tony and Clay riding away. They are really each other’s ride or die.
That’s it. It’s over. It’s been a long trainwreck. So the 2019 class graduates, so does Justin, they are doing uni right now and keeping in touch with everyone. Bye.

Ok so @bad-luck-qrow made this post about an exchange they had with their cousin, who Galaxy brained suggested a far better solution than what v7e12 did. I really wanted to expand and ramble off on it and all the ways this rewrite idea was better than what canon did, but I didn’t want to bog down their original post so here’s a new one!
Their cousin had suggested that instead of Clover dying in ep12, that Qrow was the one who Tyrian stabbed, but he survived. It would’ve avoided any character death and given Clover the chance to reconcile with the fact his partner almost died because he refused to disobey Ironwood’s orders for even a moment.
I love that! Avoids BYG, allows more development for Clover, avoids unnecessary character death angst, and frankly CRWBY wouldn’t have gotten nearly the amount of backlash it did over that ep. The only addition I’d make to this rewrite idea is that Qrow purposely threw himself in the way to save Clover, and the reasons for that is because it would have…
Followed Qrow’s canon tendency for self-sacrifice, and allowed this unhealthy habit to be later addressed and worked on like his alcoholism currently is. Frankly I’m surprised it hasn’t been mentioned at all thus far in canon (that I can think of anyway), because it’s come up in a few fights I can think of off the top of my head where it incapacitated him at least briefly when he did this, the most notable one being in his first fight with Tyrian. So addresses a bad habit and comes full circle.
Shown Qrow AND Clover both following the theme song’s message of ‘trusting love’. The theme songs are supposed to be super relevant to the volume right, but I can’t think of a single case of someone trusting love over duty or orders or what have you in the volume ending, except Penny who was like…already mostly on their team anyway? Winter went against her own sister, the Ace Ops fought the kids, Ironwood turned against Oz and almost killed Oscar to do so, and Clover decided orders to arrest Qrow were more important than dealing with the serial killer who works for Salem (Which were already orders he was following. Why do new ones cancel out the old one?). If the fight ended with this rewrite idea it would’ve followed that theme, but especially it would’ve portrayed Qrow and Clover following that theme, two chars who arguably should do so the most. Qrow with his history of being betrayed and fear of getting close and self-hatred from his semblance, and Clover the professional military man who keeps everyone including his own team at arms length and expressed (in a throwaway line) that he trusted James with his life. The growing relationship between these two despite the long laundry list of reasons they could’ve hated each other was a reoccurring subplot in this volume, and it should’ve had some kind of fucking pay out. Imagine if Clover saying “I wanted to trust you too” was the last verbal exchange they had before Qrow threw himself in the way of the attack? That despite their disagreement and the bs of that situation Qrow trusted in love, and then with Clover having to rush to get him help and reevaluate that if he just listened to his heart Qrow wouldn’t have gotten hurt in the first place.
Been adequate angst without BYG! Imagine! Getting angst without a graphic death of a queercoded char!
Been far more interesting than killing Clover ever was. People are more attached to Qrow, unlike Clover he’s been around for a while, has been given the chance to grow, and is directly related to the protags. He has a lot more involvement and at stake with the plot so people would’ve been more invested in him getting better than with Clover doing so. We just met Clover, give us more time to get to know him and fall in love; what better way than to have him save a char everyone already loves!
Allowed some great symbolism with their semblances (that somehow ended up being a completely wasted opportunity the entire volume). The unlucky one survived again, the lucky one survived only because of the unlucky one’s involvement and not by his own luck, Clover cursing his luck he let Qrow get hurt, etc. It’d also maybe get some more use of Clover’s pin (that got its own focus in the opening) and how Clover can more or less control good fortune whereas Qrow can’t control misfortune, like idk he flicks it calling for help even though they’re out of range but help answers and shows up soon enough it can save Qrow.
Allowed Clover more character development!!! What’s the point of introducing new chars and killing them before we can really get attached? Drama? Get out of here. Personally, watching an already beaten down broken man that was trying to recover and finally made a friend scream out in agony against the bi flag sunrise was not at all enjoyable!! However, watching the Mr. Perfect new guy panic while his meticulously crafted military persona crumbles as he does everything he can to save his new friend (lover) and ignore orders he knew were bad all the while? That I’d be interested in, provided it had the payout of everyone living which in this scenario it does. It’d expand so much more on the many hints that Clover was more than a blindly loyal bootlicker too. Plus from a writing standpoint, watching someone panic as they go against all odds to save their loved ones and the visceral relief when they succeed will always be infinitely more interesting and worthwhile to watch than violently killing chars off for the dramatics imo. (BYG trope or not it’s just not good writing!)
Caused the tension between Qrow and Tyrian to reach new heights in a satisfying way. (@theonceoverthinker wrote a post on this that I was specifically thinking of writing this bullet point.) Like, from Tyrian’s POV in this rewrite he tried to get revenge and STILL failed, this bitch survived a stab from him twice! TWICE! For a serial killer with a personal beef with this guy that’s gotta drive him insane! There’d be great potential for an all-hell-breaks-loose fight now. Instead the way Tyrian said his final words before running off in ep12, it gave the impression he knew Qrow was just gonna rot away in guilt and anguish, that he won, he got his revenge and that’s the end of that conflict, that the combined efforts of 3 seasoned Huntsmen/Huntresses was wasted. I know it probably won’t go that way and Tyrian will probably die by Qrow or Ruby’s hand, but watching that scene it felt like both Tyrian and Qrow accepted that Tyrian won and it was over. Idk maybe that’s just me.
Would’ve expanded upon Qrow and Clover’s relationship, which was am important subplot this volume, in a way that’s like, feasible to fix. I love the Staff of Creation theory, but honestly the trauma and broken trust those two are gonna have to work through feels overwhelming as hell, and that’s ignoring how long the feelings of guilt and bitterness are gonna be festering before Clover gets res’d (if it even happens). Instead, if Clover saved Qrow after Qrow saved him, yeah there would still be that conflict to work through (and Qrow’s self-sacrificing I mentioned earlier), but neither one died, they both immediately showed great care for the other by their actions in that situation, and would’ve been able to apologize and start mending their relationship pretty much instantly from there. Plus, it’d be so easy to finally drive home their dynamic was in fact romantic in this situation, something a lot of fans (homophobes) kept arguing against despite all the flirting, and winking, and call back to canon het flirting volumes ago, and complimenting semblances/colors, and parallels to bumbleby and a few to nuts and dolts too. Think of the romantic tropes this could’ve done, the tenderness the dialogue the reunion scene!! Wasted!!
Ok I think I’m done and y'all get the point. I’m not gonna say OP’s cousin was the first to suggest this rewrite idea, but when I read it I started frantically thinking of all the ways it would’ve easily fixed the shitstorm that ep12 ended up being.
#fair game#clover deserved better#qrow deserved better#rwde kind of#discourse kind of#long post#meta#i think ill write a fic on this. in the original post someone commented that there's a fic following this rewrite and i wanna read it#but like im just gonna beat to death clover panicking and losing composure and being so in love with this self-sacrificing goth bird uncle#also im sorry this is so disorganized. i typed it all up and Tumblr deleted it and im hungry and tired and queer so i cant be expected to b#super articulate rn. or even really ever lmao

Eqippable Ally AU
SO during my recent conversation with coaxionunlimited I got a lot of my vague AU’s fleshed out. As in, I finally put down to words some of the insane ideas I’ve had bouncing around my head for ages now.
Here’s the Equippable Ally AU, the first one we talked about and one of the longest
More under the cut, ‘cause this gonna be LONG
So to start, ideas of each Primarch in this AU
Like Corvus winding up Equippable Ally with Sly Marbo bc why not and also Marbo equipped with a Primarch-powered weapon is SCARY
ALSO Ferrus Manus still alive kinda equipping Kitten during a moment of High Tension when Magnus for whatever reason can’t be the equippable ally- cue Magnus jealousy even given full understanding of the intense circumstances
And possibly the first thing Fulgrim does once somebody gets his soul free of the paining and his body back from the daemon inhabiting it is become an Equippable Ally to one of the Space Marines in the area- proving that he’s on the good guys side for real but also that’s he’s willing to let someone else take control of it means getting better results, and maybe also that he’s traumatized to the point where he can’t make very good decisions for himself but he recognizes this flaw and is willing to take measures to work around/through it
Also Mittens makes a powerful pair because the two can work together directly in combat- Kitten taking over the physical aspects while Magnus handles all the magical ones working in the battle- and as the two learn to work together they combine their strengths into more powerful combos
Btw I like to imagine all the Primarchs have In Love With Your Carnage literally hardwired into their DNA to some degree, which affects the crack pairings I had for the Equippable Ally AU
Like apart from Mittens, you have:
Corvus and Sly Marbo (which the Void Dragon approves heavily of as an example of Rescue Romance)
Russ and Ygrainne (ie the badass Eldar who cannon thinks is Guilliman’s girlfriend- in this AU they met in Commoragh’s fighting pits and now have UST from both considering the other inferior while also being able to hold their own against each other)
Dorn has Karstodes (and that one is explicitly They Won’t because it’s based on Dorn being unable to deny that Karstodes is a very good fighter and he finds his technique and strength in battle arousing while hating his personality, and Karstodes being an Abhorrent Admirer)
Then comes the mechanics behind the Equippable Ally bit, ie How It Works
The Primarch literally turns into a sword of some kind
Like all swords are based on the Emperors flaming sword, but some minor details causing differences between them
As for the power, there’s three ways this could work
One; swords have energy blasts, a la Zelda or Bleach. The power behind these blasts is roughly 3-12 times the amount of power a Primarch would put into the same kind of swing if it was used by his own hands
Two: if the sword can be incorporated into any other battle style, the sword will glow, possibly cause the person wielding it to glow, and then the attack will have the same power as though the Primarch performed it but with 1.5-8 times the power the Primarch would’ve had
Three- Primarch can use his Psyker powers within the sword by using the weirder as a conduit. This has a bonus of 2-10 times its usual power, but the caveat is that the weirder cannot be mind-controlled and has the ability to drop the sword at any time, meaning that the Primarch can’t force someone to be a conduit for a spell they don’t want to be part of
A Primarch-as-weapon weapon is FAR more powerful than the Primarchs-as-people are
IE the weapon they turn into can do more damage than a Primarchs alone can
That’s why any Primarchs would agree to it- the end result is more powerful than what they could create alone
Biggest downside is that using that power is hard- using it effectively is double hard
See, the power modifier the wielder gets is tied to the Primarchs ability to do that any specific move. Throw a knife while holding Konrad-sword is much more powerful than throwing a knife while holding say Sanguinius sword, because the former can throw knives much better than the latter. Of course being Primarchs they’re pretty good at anything- this is more of a way to note that some Primarchs will supply bigger bonuses than others
The other thing- and this is the big one- is that the Primarch cannot guide or directly control the movements of the weirder, and the overall strength of an attack is reflected by if the WIELDER’s exact actions were taken by a Primarch- so if someone swings a Primarch sword with horrific form, it’ll have a lot of force but if they would’ve dropped a normal sword with a move like that, they’ll drop the Primarch sword. What’s more the power output increase adds even more destabilization because people really arent naturally good at handling more power than they’re used to- kickback is still a thing, and even with the defenses of a Primarch being added, Primarchs also have enhanced pain tolerance, so what a Primarch might consider mild soreness will be shocking and difficult to handle for a normal person experiencing the same thing
TLDR; it takes a lot of skill to handle Primarch Weapons well. Hence why it’s pretty useless unless the Primarch has someone he trusts who understands him very well and can fight on or close to his level
It’s like handing a civilian an automatic gun- they theoretically have the ability to use it just fine, they know how to press the trigger and point away from themselves, but they still aren’t fully qualified to use it
Then there’s a really stupid scene with Magnus and Russ throwing a limitless supply of soft silk shoes at each other at 400km/hr, Thanks to magic arbitrary rules and/or the bs of a powerful Mars dragon or a god
So I figure this might be a good time to explain where my own Equippable Ally AU was going- it was largely based on fairy-tales and the parody and exploitation thereof
Like the basic idea was that the Void Dragon A) is alive B) has a grudge against Emps and C) is still/also very much into medieval fairytales like the one of Saint George, largely because Emps was obsessed with them when he fought it
Only the dragon doesn’t really ‘get’ gender so it decides that the traditional fairytale setting where a prince or a princess is trapped and must be freed/rescued by their One True Love is a good narratively-sound way to seek Revenge- it casts the Primarchs as the “princesses” of the tale
Mainly Ferrus Manus, who has been trapped with the dragon for 10,000 years while they both waited for someone to try to rescue him, not knowing that almost all of the Galaxy thinks he’s dead. This has given the dragon much time to play dress up with Ferrus
So when the dragon learns of the Equippable Ally thing, it decides “Ah HA! This is how I identify the One True Love who is to try to rescue the children of my enemy! My greatest threat (according to all the tropes I know)!”
Only there’s more than one Equippable Ally bond, so the dragon doesn’t know which one is, narratively speaking, the Hero/Heroine.
So it decides to make all the people bonded to a Primarch in this manner fight to the death, and the winner will obviously be the Protagonist that the dragon seeks
(I realize I failed to mention this, but the dragon has cast Emps in the role of Good King whose Kingdom is threatened and who must rely on the Hero/Heroine to save the day. This is in fact the way the Dragon seeks revenge- it believes the narrative will not LET the Emperor face it, so when it defeats the new protagonist it will have won)
(The void dragon is kinda insane and believes fairy tale logic is an actual force of nature)
Anyways, the dragon decides the best way to force the Potential Protagonists to fight is to hold their True Loves hostage- good thing it’s got millennia of practice keeping Ferrus from running away
And both Russ and Magnus wind up kidnapped for this tournament.
And the dragon doesn’t just believe in fairy tales, no it wants these battles to LOOK heroic and fairy tale like.
So it dresses all the Primarchs in medieval dresses (it’s other reason for doing this is that it enjoyed playing dress up with Ferrus and would like to try with his brothers now)
When the “tournament” goes down all the Primarchs are put on display so their “true loves” can be reminded what’s at stake
Which just means Magnus and Russ see each other and try to kill each other. The Void Dragon has them separated and magic blocked to avoid this.
The Void Dragon doesn’t want Magnus and Russ killing each other in the Equippable Ally AU bc it’s all like “No no no, you two are Princesses, your heroic knights are the ones meant to be proving themselves and fighting to the death, your role is to be the pretty trophy they win, this is not how the story goes. The HERO is the one who proves their strength, the love interest can’t die in a fratricidal duel while the Hero is fighting for his life- that would be an awful story! Here just- just stay separate, you two, at least until the tournament is over”
Thing is, at least one of the kidnapped Primarchs wanted to get out of the dress he’s in, and discovered that the dresses are self-repairing, and any pieces of the outfit lost or thrown away will be replaced instantly
Magnus and Russ take this to mean “we have infinite ammo to throw at each other”
They start with jewelry bc it’s hard and might theoretically do a tiny scratch of damage if thrown fast enough, but that gets taken away. Then they find that the shoes, which are fabric and soft, cannot do damage and do not get taken away when thrown
So Magnus and Russ ignore the entire death match going on around them to throw shoes at each other at 500 km/hr, in the futile hope that it will do some damage to the other
The entire thing has been me getting the idea for like a 30-sec scene animation, but as you can see it has WAY too much backstory behind it
I can’t remember if I started with Fairy Tale parodies combining with Equippable Ally trope, or if I just wanted Magnus and Russ to throw shoes at each other and the rest built itself around that
(Also Also, Russ and Magnus eventually do get tired of not getting anywhere, and Corvus celebrates their seeing reason and stopping their pointless (albeit commendable on Russ’ part) attempts at homicide with weapons that clearly cannot kill the other
Then Dorn points out the shoes could theoretically be used to kill a Primarch if you literally smothered a Primarch in shoes so that he had no access to air and then kept him there for the full three standard years it would take for him to suffocate.
Russ and Magnus immediately begin throwing shoes again)

Org members (minus the babies) reacting to finding out their SO died in a way that was related to their power (but not caused by their power) (Like Demyx finding out his SO drowned, Zexion finding out his SO was hallucinating when she died, Larxene's SO being struck by lightning, etc.)
Y’ALL READY FOR SOME ANGST - I’m gonna go cry now so peace out
I can’t take full credit for all of this, either. A big shout out to my lovely friend @nopantssaturday. The angst and pain are her fault.
TRIGGER WARNING for Depression, Suicide, Drug Use, a lack of self care, and descriptions of death.
Xemnas
S/O Cause of Death: Depression and Suicide due to Mental Deterioration
There’s something about Xemnas that really tears your brain to pieces. Just being in his presence for long periods of time tears away at your psyche, so it stands to reason that long term exposure to him and his powers would just eat away at your brain.
He doesn’t really show that he’s sad, but he isn’t really surprised. There were days when he could tell that something was wrong with you, when you were too easily distracted and you wouldn’t respond to your name and you would stare out of the window for hours on end. You weren’t fully there, he just never thought that you would resort to something that would take you away from him forever.
Xigbar
S/O Cause of Death: Shot and Killed In A Drive-By
He hadn’t wanted you to go on this mission alone, but you had insisted because it would be quick and easy, but little did he realize that you wouldn’t ever be coming back and the argument you had about being able to take care of yourself would be the last time he would ever speak to you.
The others had been hesitant about telling him what happened to you, especially since they didn’t exactly have a body to bring back, but he took it surprisingly well, all things considered. Most of them don’t even notice when he gets more and more hesitant about picking up his own weapons because the thought of his own arrow guns doing something to one of the other members scares him.
Gets angry. So, so angry. None of them had ever seen him so angry before. He always had that playful personality that said he was always ten steps ahead of you, but now he’s just… blank and cruel.
Xaldin
S/O Cause of Death: Suffocation in a Tornado
It’s his fault. He knows that it is even if you would never blame him for it. He gets so enraged at something - really, he doesn’t even remember what it was - that he causes a wind vortex. He doesn’t notice you with one arm outstretched toward him and the other clutching your throat as you try to reach him, desperately trying to breathe despite the lack of oxygen around you. He doesn’t realize what happened until after you’re gone.
Goes pretty much numb. Realizes he needs to control his emotions better before he hurts anyone else, so he becomes an emotionless mess that doesn’t really feel much of anything. It’s depression. There’s no spark for him in life anymore. At an urging from Lexaeus, he and Vexen end up slipping an antidepressant into Xaldin’s food. It doesn’t really work much, but some is better than nothing.
Wallows in his own shame. Doesn’t really understand how bad he’s gotten until he’s sparring with Lexaeus and he sends Lexaeus to Vexen because his arm was pulled out of its socket. Learns to hold himself back a bit but definitely breaks a couple of sandbags and punches some holes in the walls before he gets full control of his aggression.
Vexen
S/O Cause of Death: Experiment Gone Wrong
You’re helping Vexen with an experiment when it happens. He’s testing something that could possibly give you ice powers like he has. All the other tests had been successful, so there was no doubt that it would work on you, too. He thought he had a breakthrough and, for a while, it worked. But then…. something goes terribly wrong.
Your fingers start to go numb. And the feeling goes up your arm, to your shoulders, your chest, down your whole body and up to the top of your head. It takes a little less than twenty seconds for the ice to reach your heart, no time at all for him to do anything to save you. He stepped out of the room for two seconds and by the time he returned, you were gone. From that moment on, he refuses to have any distractions. His love for you was a distraction and you paid the price for it.
He abandons the experiment. It’s a failure. He throws away all of his notes and data because he can’t stand to look at it. Throws himself into his other work and doesn’t take care of himself. You aren’t there, so what’s the point? Sometimes forcibly dragged out of the lab by the other members so he can get some rest, especially when Zexion starts to get really worried.
Lexaeus
S/O Cause of Death: Death by Rockslide
Saw the rocks crumbling down and down as if in slow motion. It was from an attack that had simply gotten out of hand from someone on the far side of the battlefield - an explosion gone wrong or something. But it was too noisy and you didn’t hear him shouting for you over the noise and you didn’t even notice the rocks falling toward you until it was too late.
Would start digging into the rubble until his hands were bleeding profusely, but stops once he finds your hand and realizes that you have no pulse. The others have to dig you out because he’s much too busy crying. It’s the first time that any of them have ever seen him cry real tears and they just keep coming without stopping. Slams his fists into the ground so hard that he causes a small dust storm.
It’s the first and only time they see him with so much emotion. There’s nothing. No emotion. Even less talking than before. Never smiles ever. No one can ever seem to reach him because he’s just too far gone.
Zexion
S/O Cause of Death: Hallucinating and Overdosed after Being Injected with a Cocktail of Hallucinogens
It started out innocent enough. He shows you his power of Illusion and you thoroughly enjoys it. It’s beautiful and entertaining and you so fascinating, so you keep asking him to put you under over and over again. He realizes that it’s becoming a problem and puts a stop to it because living so much in a fantasy world isn’t healthy in the slightest.
But by then, you’re addicted. You need more and more and you turn to the only place you can get it: drugs. It’s nothing like Zexion’s illusions - not even close to being as fascinating, so you try more and more and more until you go a little too overboard. Zexion considers himself an absolute fool for not noticing the signs and blames himself for it completely.
Guilt ridden and can’t sleep. Doesn’t turn to any kind of substance because he knows that it isn’t healthy. Finally, the others get so worried that he hasn’t slept in weeks so Lexaeus and Xaldin hold him down while Vexen gives him a powerful sedative. Now, he sleeps all the time. It’s a good escape from the regular world when his own illusions don’t help him.
Saix
S/O Cause of Death: Disappeared on the Night of the Full Moon
Everyone thinks that Saix has it the worst. They can’t imagine a more horrible fate. He doesn’t know what happened to you. No one does. One day you were there, happy, smiling, sleeping comfortably next to him. Then you left one night and just. never came back. He keeps looking for you, constantly, gathering search parties to look until they’ve all given up and keep sending him looks of pity.
But he has to know. He has to. He needs closure because he has to know what happened or it might literally drive him insane. People start to whisper, spreading rumors that he’s the one who killed you, but he denies the rumor. Refuses to believe that he could have ever done something like that, but… was it him? Did he do something to you and he just didn’t realize it? The idea all but drives him insane.
Starts getting hallucinations about what happened. Goes into a state of delirium from the stress and he’s unsure of what’s real and what isn’t. Gets visions about what happened - visions about him tearing you apart. He isn’t sure if they’re real or not, but he thinks they might be even if he doesn’t understand.
Axel
S/O Cause of Death: Stuck in a Burning House
It was an accident. Axel knows this. But it doesn’t stop him from feeling like it wasn’t his fault. He started the fire because he was just messing around and having fun, but then it got out of control and the room was destroyed and you were trapped where he couldn’t reach you.
It drives him insane. Nightmares so vivid that he can feel the heat on his skin and can’t stop seeing the flames rise up as you scream for help across the room - so close, so close but he just can’t reach you.
Definitely feels guilty and doesn’t know how to stop the guilt. Thinks he’s somewhat of a monster and spends a lot of time looking at his hands, wondering if there was something he could have done if he had been serious and hadn’t been messing around. Kind of wants to stop using his powers altogether.
Demyx
S/O Cause of Death: Drowned
Almost completely loses his spark. All of that energy he always has - that bright and shiny attitude that people have come to expect from him - all but disappears. It wasn’t his fault, but knowing that he wasn’t there to stop it… it all but drives you insane. Especially because… He could have prevented it. He just didn’t hear you calling for help because he was playing his sitar and couldn’t hear you over the music.
Comes to resent music a bit. He stops playing for a very long time and the other members get a little uncomfortable at seeing him being so serious all of the time. Feels like a complete idiot because it’s the fault of his own stupidity.
Gets a fear of deep, dark water where you can’t see the bottom. Doesn’t like to swim anymore, either. If someone happens to splash him with water or something, especially in his face where he accidentally gets water up his nose, he tends to panic.
Luxord
S/O Cause of Death: Lost in a High Stakes Game of Cards
It’s his fault and he knows it. He became too cocky and too confident and bet your life when it wasn’t his to use and ended up losing you in the process. He has no one to blame but himself. He gets weird looks from the other members that make him uncomfortable because they all know, but none of them know how to confront him about it because he’s already beating himself up enough.
Starts drinking to deal with the guilt. Begins with adding a little brandy with his tea until it basically becomes all alcohol and no tea at all. Only the booze seems to take the edge off. Screws himself up big time.
Kind of torn between never gambling again or throwing himself into gambling to control the guilt and sadness. If he practices more…. if he gets unbeatable like he once thought he was…. maybe this could have been prevented.
Marluxia
S/O Cause of Death: Poisoned by Hemlock
None of them are quite sure how it got into your system. Marluxia is sure that you wouldn’t have done that to yourself, so the suspicion immediately goes toward the other members. Tensions are high as they all try to figure out who was responsible, but they never find out.
Marluxia, meanwhile, purges any and all hemlock in his garden. Recruits Axel to follow him and burn the damn things to the ground. Hemlock, the English Yew, the poison Ivy, the Poinsettias, all of the strands of Lily of the Valley and… well. He doesn’t destroy the Aconite. They were your favorites and he doesn’t have the heart to get rid of them entirely.
Neglects the rest of his garden for a while even though Larxene tries to keep it up for him while he grieves. Some of the plants die because she’s not good at gardening, but she tries her best. She avoids him, though, because she simply isn’t good at comforting people and she doesn’t want to make him feel worse.
Larxene
S/O Cause of Death: Struck by Lightning
Larxene refuses to feel guilty because it literally isn’t her fault and she knows it. It was a freak accident of nature that she literally couldn’t control. Acts like a bad bitch that doesn’t feel anything but heaven forbid someone happens to bring up something about her former S/O because she will SNAP at them. Turns out she can only act like a bad bitch if no one ever mentions your name. No one is allowed to talk about you. Ever.
All of that panic and guilt just at hearing about you or seeing her own powers in action makes her become very defensive. Eventually has a breakdown from all of the pent up emotion. It all but drives her crazy.
After that, they really don’t see her around much anymore. No one really knows what happened to her.

I Saw It In A Movie One Time (ch 5) - Ties
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
Chapter 4
Chapter 6
Chapter 7
The next morning, Edward intended to arrange a meeting between his own family and Sam’s pack with the help of Bella. However, this method proved to be futile as Jacob refused to answer any of Bella’s calls. Bella could only assume that the reason was because Jacob was still hurt after being undermined by her choice to stay with Edward, no matter how much he tried to prove his love would be better for her while Edward was off in Italy. To be fair, he had only gone so far away because his love for Bella was greater than himself.Edward let out an exasperated sigh, “We can’t get to Sam,” he informed the coven, “Jacob won’t pick up any of Bella’s calls.”
“Sam was unavailable at the time I called him as well.” Carlisle said, disappointment seeping through his words, “We’ll figure something out when you all get back from school this afternoon,” Carlisle dismissed.
With a nod, the Cullens walked out, shrugging on their backpacks and grabbing keys for 3 different vehicles.
-
Upon returning home— All except for Edward, who was dropping off Bella to her dad— they gathered once again in the living room.
“Victoria’s coming. She’ll be here in four days,” Alice informed, “I had a vision about it earlier today. She was in the forest by the river,” she described, referring to the river that split the Cullen’s territory from the wolves
“Bella’s flying to Jacksonville,” Edward used his inhuman speed to come quickly and almost silently through the door, already caught up on the conversation through hearing their thoughts, “I’m going with her.”
The coven nodded, all understanding this was the only way to hide it from Bella.
“Have you heard from the pack at all?” Edward asked Carlisle. Rosalie’s face twisted with distaste at just the name and Emmett smirked upon seeing her expression.
“I haven’t been able to, no,” Carlisle replied. “Perhaps I can call her in for a check up on her cast. She left without her meds as well, and I’m not sure why.”
“I talked to her after she met with you,” Edward explained, “She’s been here since before the whole Italy thing happened. Before we all left Forks— she was already here.”
Everyone in the room was shocked, “I didn’t see her come,” Alice stated. That meant she’d already been here for half a year, and since before the summer after their junior year ever started.
“She wasn’t a concern back then, probably,” Emmett offered
“No, at prom, she saw me and thought I was a vampire. She knew, I just heard her thoughts very clearly. She knew my name.” Edwards eyebrows furrowed in frustration upon retrieving the memory. The question was: How did she know?
Rosalie was now concerned, “What else does she know?”
“She knew Victoria,” Edward said
It wasn’t new information, but hearing all of the information now was still shocking to the Cullens. How had they been found out? What other information is there? Who was she telling? Who told her?
Emmett shook his head, “We’ve gotta bring her in,” he said with an amused smirk.
“Are you nuts?” Rosalie asked, “We’re not dragging any more humans into this house,” Rosalie declared, arms crossed in front of her.
“I’m just saying,” Emmett raised his hands defensively, “It’d be cool to know how she knows all this. And I think we should be straight up honest with her about what needs to happen.”
“This is the most logical thing I’ve heard you say in decades,” Jasper teased.
“Shut up,” Emmett shot back with a playful smile.
“He might be right,” Esme contributed, “I think she might be more upset if she finds out we’re watching her behind her back,” she paused, “and I mean who knows— with all this knowledge, she might already know our plans”
“I doubt it,” Edward disagreed shaking his head, “if she knew that far ahead, she would have seen Victoria coming.”
“And we’re not dragging her into this,” he declared once again, “We can get the wolves involved if it keeps the treaty in tact, but that’s as far as I’ll go.”
“What is she to you?” Rosalie asked with a stiffened voice
Edward shrugged, a concentrated look on his face as if he was scouring his brain for an answer, “I don’t know. But knowing how exposed she is to our lifestyle is almost driving me insane”
-
Victoria ran as far as she could, shocked that wolves were a real thing and that they were in Forks. The events played over and over in her head. All Victoria wanted was human blood as she wasn’t searching for any new army recruits at the time, and luckily found a girl by herself in the forest. As fun as hunting the girl was, however, her entire world froze as her name was spoken from the lips for a human. A regular human. Needless to say, she was angry. Angry that she was in even more danger that her kind was exposed to a complete stranger, and this may cause to Volturi to get involved. She already knew she would be a concern upon creating an army and prepared herself for that punishment, but if Aro read her thoughts and found out that a human— a tiny frail little human— knew of her kind, it’s game over for her. Victoria planned to put an end to it, on the weekend when she knew the Cullens would be hunting because they weren’t being fake students in school, and she wasn’t concerned about running into the wolves. Now all she had to do was wait four more days.
-
As soon as Carlisle checked into his workplace at the hospital he dashed straight to his patient files and searching for Kaileia’s name and contact information. Upon doing so, he notified a secretary to reach out to her and inform her of the meds she forgot to pick up.
Over the phone, Kaileia agreed to pick up her medications before closing time at 3 p.m. Carlisle felt accomplished and called Edward to let him know she’d be at the hospital around 3.
As time came, she walked swiftly to the pharmacy, picked up her medications and was quickly trying to walk out as she had work in 30 minutes and had just that amount of time to be there. She felt his aura but cursed herself internally as she locked eyes with “Twitward”.
Had he not been so stoic in the moment, he would have laughed at her thought. To his surprise, she motioned for him to follow her outside and he obliged.
“If I asked you to stop following me and let this go, would you?” She asked sincerely.
He sighed shook his head, “there’s a lot at stake right now and my family and I are just concerned for your safety,” he explained, only making eye contact with her for that second part of the sentence.
Kai paused. Before she spoke, she reminded herself in her head to mask her real thoughts with louder less-risky ones. For example, she could be thinking, “don’t say you’re not from this planet,” but masked it with an, “AAAAHHHHHHHHHH”.
“I can hear you trying not to think,” Edward pointed out
She smiled to herself, “good. That means its working. Whats wrong with my safety?” She asked, knowing full well it was probably Victoria.
“It is,” he replied to her thought, “she’s not gonna stop. Alice had a vision and we think she’s searching for you.”
She froze, eyes unmoving. The last encounter she had with Victoria was the most fearful she ever experienced. It’s how she imagined an ant felt when it felt it would be squished by the effortless power of a finger.
“I doubt she’ll find me—”
“No, you don’t,” Edward interjected with a shake of his head, “you know what she’s capable of.”
Kaileia nodded, searching for the right question to ask.
“My family and I— we want to be able to stand watch for you. The disappearances of people in Seattle are from her, I’m sure of it. The others don’t think so, but I know it’s not accident,” he explained
“So why do you feel like you need to protect me and not those victims in Seattle?” She pressed. Edward inwardly grimaced at the word “victims” and felt ashamed.
“You know a lot of information,” He answered, “I— I’m just... intrigued by you somehow. And I know you hate us but—”
“Okay. I get it,” her hands went up defensively, “you want all the information I can give you and I understand that but,” she lowered her hands and fiddled them instead, her voice lowering, “if I keep talking to you, it could cause a life. Maybe more. Maybe all of them. That’s what I’m trying to avoid. I don’t hate you, Edward. I’m trying to protect us all.” She explained without hesitation. She realized, if she wanted them to leave her alone, she needed him to know the truth.
“Please— and I really mean it,” she implored to him, sincerity spilling through every word, “don’t get in contact with me again. If Victoria gets to me, so be it. Protect Bella and protect your family. Don’t worry about me.”
She walked away without another word and Edward was left almost as confused as before. He sighed inwardly, the only information he was able to gather was her name, Kaileia— “a very unique name” he thought— and her phone number. Though, it would be no use now as she forbid him from contacting her ever again. Edward walked into the hospital to inform Carlisle of their conversation.
-
“Life and death?” Rosalie questioned incredulously.
“She didn’t tell me anything else, just that she... knows everything. I mean, thats what I got from her explanation.”
Bella dropped her fork onto her plate and turned her palm upward questionably, “How is this even possible?”
“She’s a pixie I’m calling it,” Emmett announced
“Oh my God.” Jasper whispered to himself, almost tired of Emmett’s funny yet stupid ass comments.
-
Kai sped to work, not wanting to clock in late to an unforgiving manager. She sighed, out of all the days she chose to be late, it had to be when that shithead was working the same shift. There didn’t even need to be two people on a Thursday and she hoped he would clock out early like he did when he just didn’t feel like being at work sometimes.
The two hour shift went by quickly with nothing out of the ordinary happening. She clocked out thankful that the day went smoothly then drove home.
[Journal Entry]
June 2nd, 2006
Edward saw me at the hospital today. I told him that i couldn’t give him any information and the risks that came with it if I did. He gets it but i dont think they’ll leave me alone tho tbh. He thought i hated him and screaming in my head masked the thoughts. I hope no one finds this bc i mean yeah i hated him in the movies but ONLY because I was a 5tf grade girl on team jacob. He’s kinda the only wolf i know but i havent run into them and I dont plan to. I want a dog.
Despite it only being 6p.m., Kai was beat. For no reason really. She slept until noon but felt fatigued still. With that, she took a nap right on top of the journal she shut.
-
“Thank you for meeting with us,” Carlisle said to Jacob
Jacob said nothing, but offered Carlisle a nod. He was almost uncomfortable inside of the Cullen family’s transparent house, but was almost certain they wouldn’t do anything to him. Carlisle took this as a sign to continue, “There’s a girl that works on your reservation that Victoria’s hunting down,” he began, “Alice had a vision of her on your territory.”
Alice stepped forward, presenting her sketches to Jacob, “we think she works here,” she pointed to the left side of the paper, showing the convenience store, “But she lives on this street outside of the reservation.”
“I had a vision of Victoria running through here. She’ll be here on Saturday,” she informed him
Jacob nodded, “did you guys tell her she’s in trouble?”
“She already knew,” Carlisle said gently.
“She knows a lot,” Alice said
Jacob’s eyes met hers intently, “what do you mean ‘a lot’?” His brows furrowed
Alice began to explain, “Edward said she saw him at prom and already knew he was a vampire. Before he even talked to her, she knew he could read minds. She knew she was attacked by Victoria—”
“We saw her,” Jacob stated
“You did?” Carlisle asked him
Jacob nodded, “Yeah. We uh, we saw Victoria trying to eat her while she was in the woods. We tried catching her but she got away,” he drew in a breath, “I didn’t think it would go full circle into something like this.”
Carlisle nodded. It wasn’t anything that any of them were expecting— for some girl to show up with full knowledge of the supernatural that occurred in Forks.
Carlisle stood from his seat to level with Jacob, eye to eye, “We want to ask if you will watch over her. Alice will continue to update you if she has any other visions of Victoria hunting on your land,” he implored genuinely, “we want to protect the treaty.”
Jacob thought about it, though the decision wasn’t going to be up to him because Sam was the alpha. He was going to find out this information by either Jacob being honest, or his thoughts being read through the wolf telepathy.
“I’ll let Sam know and he’ll get back to you tomorrow morning. The treaty line at 8a.m.,” Jacob arranged the meeting for them.
“Thank you, I really appreciate what you’re doing,” Carlisle validated gently. Jacob nodded as he made his way out of the Cullen household.
-
It took no convincing at all for Sam to comply with Carlisle’s request. It was logical— protect the people on the reservation, eliminate the threat, maintain the treaty. The only problem was, they didn’t know exactly who the girl was. Her name was Kai, she knew a lot of information, she worked at the convenience store that was a ten minute walk from Emily’s house and she lived about twenty minutes from Bella’s. Sam prepared the pack to meet Carlisle in wolf form tomorrow at 8a.m. so they could all hear it from Carlisle himself.
———
Thank you so much for reading!! This was kind of a filler but it’s also kinda important to know how the cullens and the wolf pack feel about the situation imo

Present (Friday, continued)...
Emma couldn't hold back her tears as she crouched before the mutilated form of her husband. He'd been stabbed in the chest and through the hand, and his right shoulder hung grotesquely out of place. Blood caked his face and pooled in livid swellings from a recent beating. Red droplets dripped sluggishly off the tip of his nose and splattered, barely visible, onto the rust-tinged burlap on his torso. A haphazard mess of surgical staples did little to contain bone-deep lacerations on either side of his ankle. And a line of slowly oozing punctures trailed their way up both inner thighs until disappearing beneath the sackcloth smock.
She decided to take it as a good sign that everything still seemed to be actively bleeding. Killian did not appear to be moving at all; at first, Emma could not even see any sign of breaths. But as she reached out to seek a carotid pulse, she noticed a slight and labored rise and fall of his chest. Her relief caused a catch in her throat. He was alive... for the moment.
Suddenly overwhelmed with emotion and weighed down by the responsibility of keeping him alive until help arrived, Emma fumbled for the phone concealed in her pocket. If ever there was a time for magical healing… Once again, she strained to feel the tingle of light where her power dwelt, a reflex she’d already indulged several times since the Vocivore’s defeat. As before: nothing.
Well, no use bemoaning something she couldn't change. Her free hand automatically came to rest on Killian's arm, above the ring and stake, over an unraveling bandage. She was both heartened and dismayed when Killian flinched away from her touch with a whine.
"Killian, hey," she soothed. "It's just me." She hit the button to call EMS, then put her phone on speaker. "You're gonna be okay."
She kept a careful watch on her husband while explaining to the dispatcher what was needed: essentially every ambulance and emergency vehicle in the United Realms. As sheriff, she knew they would take her seriously, as well as listen to any special request. So while she did her best to direct them to the scene, she also suggested that they contact David, who knew exactly the route they should take.
In the midst of rattling off her father’s contact info, while also absently holding pressure against as many of the puncture wounds as she could simultaneously reach, Emma felt Killian begin to stir. He shuddered as he tried to drag his eyes open.
“Try and hold still,” urged Emma.
“Swan,” he whispered, wincing.
His recognition of her brought tears to her eyes once more. Another good sign. “I'm here, babe. Just hold on; we’re going to get you all fixed up.”
He shook his head, breathing faster now, trying and failing to reach up and push her away with his stump. “You have to... go…” he groaned. “The monster…”
A flash of extreme pain crossed his face, and the words fizzled out, evaporating into frantic gasps for air.
Emma felt her own breath catch at his obvious distress. “Shhhhh, Killian, shhh... calm down. The monster’s dead; it can't hurt you anymore.”
Every muscle in her husband's body stood taut as he fought for air.
“He's having trouble breathing,” she reported to the person on the other end of the line, as calmly as she could. She listened to the instructions but her attention was riveted on Killian. At long last, he managed to quell the panic and slow the gasping.
“D-dead?” he wheezed, sounding as if he couldn't even define the word.
“Yep.” She used her shirt sleeve to carefully blot some blood that was trickling into one of his eyes.
Killian finally managed to focus on Emma's face for the first time, and though he still had an alarmingly dazed look in his eyes, he immediately fixated on a small cut on her forehead.
“You're hurt.”
He looked as if he were about to raise his left arm despite the blade embedded in his chest. Emma held him down.
“Good to know your keen observational skills are still intact.” She rolled her eyes as he continued staring up at her in concern. “I'm fine. And you're ridiculous.”
He gritted his way through another wave of intense pain and seemed to forget that she was even there. It was then that she noticed how much he was shivering; whether it was from the practically nothing he was wearing, or from shock, she didn't know. How was she supposed to lay him flat and elevate his feet with his hand pinned to the frickin’ altar? More importantly, if he stopped breathing, how would she perform effective CPR in this position?
She pushed aside the thought that, with the paramedics at least 30 minutes away, any efforts at resuscitation would likely be futile.
Emma glanced back at Jones, who was gingerly unwinding the costume bandage from his wrist. He wouldn’t be able to provide much assistance, whatever she decided to do.
She felt Killian squirming under her hands and turned her attention back. He groaned and then, as if reading her thoughts, he hissed,
"Please, love... get me free of this... bloody thing..."
His fingers twitched in feeble emphasis. Emma bit her lip, reluctant. "I don't know, Killian... that may not be such a good idea."
"Please," he said again, eyes screwed shut against the pain. "It'll have to happen... eventually. And I think... it may make it... easier to breathe."
"It will hurt a lot less after you've had some morphine," she pointed out. But if it really did help him to breathe better...
"Please, Emma," Killian grunted. "Just do it."
The dispatcher on the phone asked for an update, and Emma explained the situation while she set squeamishness aside and studied the impaling blade. She had no way of knowing how long it actually was, or how much of it was embedded in the wood. Approximately three inches of sharp steel were sandwiched between the dagger's handle and Killian's palm. The heel of his hand and the underside of his forearm glistened with blood all the way down to the elbow. Pulling the dagger free would be inadvisable if she wanted to keep that trickle of blood from becoming a stream. The dispatcher concurred, advising that they wait, if possible. But Emma didn't know how bad the stab wound to his chest was; he could even have a punctured lung on that side, so relieving the tension on the other side may well be the difference between life and death for him.
As she was agonizing over the decision, she sensed movement behind her, and when she glanced back, it was to see Jones staggering up the steps toward them. He was breathing hard, looked pale and sweaty, but didn't stop until he reached the top. Grimacing, he knelt, landing hard next to his doppelganger, whose eyes snapped open as he cringed away. Expecting an attack. Emma squeezed his wrist in reassurance.
"Ahoy there, mate," said Jones softly. He faked a scowl and added, "You know, I haven't forgotten to be miffed at the pair of you and this insane plot of yours."
Gratified by the hint of a pained smile on Killian's lips, Jones turned to address Emma. "Suppose I should offer my help anyway."
Emma eyed him critically. The Ace bandage was now wrapped haphazardly around his injured shoulder, loosely covering the patch of blood spreading on the sackcloth over the bullet wound. She raised an eyebrow. “Sure you're up to it?"
Jones only gave a small, unconvincing twitch of his lips. Emma took her hands away from her husband's injuries long enough to grip the ends of the Ace bandage, which were merely tucked under one another. She gave a sharp tug to tighten it and tied a more secure knot, hissing,
“What the hell happened back there?”
“Not a clue.” Jones closed his eyes in a brief concession to the momentary increase in pain, then nodded his thanks.
The dispatcher on the phone crackled an update in ETA: 20 minutes, give or take. A long time, in which anything could happen. Most of which would be bad.
Emma gave a sigh of resignation. Then she squared her shoulders.
"Think you can help stabilize his hand?" she murmured, and Jones' gaze flicked to the afflicted limb.
"Yeah, of course."
Emma shuffled around to the other side of her husband's legs, closer to the impaling dagger. With a stifled grunt, Jones made room for her. Killian watched, motionless apart from his short, gasping breaths. Forcing herself to turn away from the pain in his eyes, Emma reached for the dagger's handle. Behind her, the detective gently wrapped his hand around Killian's wrist.
In response to the hissed intake of air to her right, Emma caressed Killian's cheek. "You sure?"
Her husband's eyes betrayed just as much fear and reluctance as anguish, but he managed a shaky nod. Emma tightened her grip on the dagger. "On three, then. One..." She heard Killian gasp a preparatory breath, saw him squeeze his eyes shut. "Two..."
On impulse, ignoring the blood and sweat staining his face, Emma initiated a furious kiss, at the same time yanking with all her strength on the trapped blade. The unexpected touch of intimacy worked as a distraction for approximately half a second, as a dazed Killian attempted to reciprocate. But then he was pulling away, howling his agony against her cheek. Emma cursed and braced her free hand against the altar as leverage; long seconds later, the dagger popped free of the wood, inevitably jerking inside Killian's hand despite efforts to keep it still. Though a smear of crimson revealed where a short length of steel had slid free, enough remained within his flesh to hopefully stem the worst of the bleeding.
"It's done; it's out," Emma breathed, reaching for his head and cradling him against her shoulder. She nodded at Jones and, moving in slow tandem, they lowered the impaled limb to rest awkwardly on the floor beside him, the dagger’s handle mere inches from his hip. And Killian's muffled groans were sweet music, proving his continued existence, his ability to draw enough breath to express his pain.
Even from her strange angle, even through the stained sackcloth, Emma could see the wrong position of his shoulder joint. She cringed and stroked the back of Killian's head. Then she gently pulled away, asking,
"Any better?"
Killian rested his head back against the altar and squinted up at her, nodding once but not wasting the energy to speak.
"Not touching that shoulder. Sorry." She spared a glance at Jones, who had sat back and was now massaging his chest despite the length of metal still burrowed into his arm. He grimaced agreement with her decision; even if either of them had the expertise to pop the joint back into place, it had been long enough for swelling and tightening of the tendons and ligaments to make an attempt not worth it.
"Do you want to lie down?"
At first, it looked as if Killian were considering the suggestion. Theoretically, lying him flat could be advisable for multiple reasons, and might make it easier for him to relax, but Emma wanted to leave the choice up to him. In the end, whether he thought he would find it harder to breathe, wanted to avoid the pain of changing positions, or feared the possibility that once he lay down, he may never get up again, Killian answered with a feeble shake of his head.
Emma peeled her jacket off and rolled it into a tight bundle, which she carefully slid behind Killian's head as a makeshift pillow. Her proximity allowed her a better view of the bulky new collar and its set of screws which, up until now, she'd been hoping weren't actually drilled into his neck. That explained at least some of that morning’s screams. Emma scowled, feeling sick; she'd granted that villain far too easy of a death.
Killian didn't look any more comfortable, but grimaced his gratitude at her before suddenly catching sight of the slumped monster corpse in the distance. He seemed to grow somehow even more pale, warily watching the Vocivore for any sign of movement.
“It's dead?”
Emma rested a reassuring hand on his shin, inadvertently leaving a bloody handprint on a relatively unscathed portion of skin. Killian's eyes were locked on his tormentor, as if his vigilance were the only thing keeping it subdued.
“Shot it myself,” she growled. “So unless the damn thing can regenerate its ugly, pervert brain, we’re finally done with it.”
As she said this, she realized it may not have been the most comforting thing for Killian to hear: they still had a lot to learn about the creature, and the possibility, however slight, of the Vocivore coming back to life gave her a momentary chill. She could only imagine how it made Killian feel.
“Listen,” she said, “Jones and I both have our weapons and will keep an eye on it. But I don't think we need to worry about it.”
“And those slaves over there?” added Jones, his voice only slightly stronger than Killian's had been. “They're lost. Directionless. The first sign of renewed purpose, we’ll know to be on the alert.”
Emma stole a glance in the direction the detective was looking and saw the slaves, some of whom had been holding her captive just moments before, hunched on their knees, faces in hands. One or two lay stretched out flat, silent and still.
"He's right. Leave the guard duty to us; you just focus on hanging in there until the medics come."
Emma did not like the bleak hopelessness with which he reacted to her statement; she knew he was doubting his odds of surviving that long. But he rested his head back and soon had his eyes closed, either deciding to put his trust in her words, or simply too weary to do otherwise.
She tried to remain quiet as she reached across his body for the loose end of the bandage around his left wrist. It appeared to be the same one supplied by Storybrooke General; if its sole purpose was still to cover the wrist ring, it would be of better use staunching some of the oozing injuries on his legs.
“Killian?” she asked, some time later. “How far is Z's and would you be able to tell me how to get there?”
Her husband didn't respond.
“Babe?” A gentle finger on his cheek elicited no response, but he did pull away slightly when she got too near an inflamed abrasion by his eye. His breaths were shallow and quick but regular, and he seemed somehow balanced enough even without much supporting him upright. She was torn between staying to monitor his condition and heading off to see what she could find in the way of first aid supplies.
Watching through half-lidded eyes, Jones reluctantly sat up straighter, rousing himself from a pain-driven daze to offer,
“I'll keep an eye on him, Emma. Go do what you need to do.”
The detective was hardly in a fit state to offer that kind of service; Emma wouldn't have been surprised to watch him be the next one to pass out. But, grunting, Jones got to his knees and made his way to Emma’s side, dutifully nudging her hand away so he could take over the task of applying pressure. With a stubbornness so much like her own Killian, he even went so far as to use the scarred remnants of his left wrist to cover an additional wound, yielding nothing to the anguish that surely wracked his shoulder with the effort. Emma flashed him look of exasperation before clambering to her feet.
“Five minutes,” she promised, then jogged her way out into the desolate afternoon light.
*****
His Master loomed overhead. Large and menacing. A claw was embedded in his shoulder, another in his hand, severing tendons, removing sensation and function from each remaining finger. Killian whimpered, shifting under questing tentacles pressed hard into burning thighs. Emma, the rescue... all a wonderful, horrible hallucination. How much longer would his suffering drag on?
Tentacles dug deeper, and Killian thrashed with all of his remaining strength. He knew his Master demanded obedience, but he couldn't do it. Not again.
A startlingly good impression of his own voice floated down from above. "Hey, easy! Easy there, mate; it's only me."
Nearly hyperventilating now despite unprecedented agony in his chest, Killian continued to struggle; opening his eyes seemed a monumental task and he would only see that hideous face staring down at him anyway. He had no idea what his Master was up to, or how the creature had managed to mimic his voice, but it hardly mattered.
"Killian, mate; I promise I'm not trying to hurt you. I swear. In truth, I intend to wait until you're fully recovered. And then... well, after that, all bets are off. You bloody wanker."
Those words sounded nothing like any his Master had ever said before. Perhaps he was hallucinating this as well? Killian groaned quietly, then peeled his eyes open.
Detective Jones sat beside Killian's knee, holding pressure on some of the punctures to his inner thigh. The man looked utterly spent, had a blood soaked bandage wrapped carelessly around a shoulder, and wore a grim expression, but his eyes were soft. Upon locking gazes with Killian, the detective flashed a wan smile.
"That's it. See? Nothing to fear now."
Killian remained unconvinced that it wasn't a dream. He scanned the desecrated church, feeling dazed and slightly drunk; his eyes would not follow a steady path and he couldn't make sense of everything he was seeing. He winced and tried to relieve some of the strain on his shoulder, to no avail.
"If you're looking for Emma, she's just stepped out for a bit," Jones told him. "In search of bandages and a blanket."
"Emma..." croaked Killian.
"She'll be back soon," soothed the detective, hiding a wince himself as he shifted his weight. "And not much longer until other help arrives as well."
Killian brought his focus back on the face identical to his own, blinking heavy eyelids and fighting massive disorientation. "How...?"
Jones gave a wry grin. "Your Swan confessed. I know everything now. You great bloody git. You know your in-laws are going to murder you as well?"
"Can't murder... a corpse... mate..."
"No, no... you're not getting out of it that easily." Jones checked that his hand was still covering the wound before continuing. "You're obligated to stay alive; otherwise, who will we exact our vengeance upon?"
Killian's eyes fluttered closed against his will. "The Crocodile... it was his gadget... made this possible."
Jones laughed once. "Okay, I'm not averse to that idea... but as I understand it, he’s only one third of the responsible party."
Killian could not keep up the conversation. He was in too much anguish and found his concentration slipping. Jones seemed to sense this and fell silent, but after a moment of quiet, he murmured,
"I understand, mate. I do. And I can't say I would have done anything differently, given the opportunity you had."
Killian made an attempt at a grateful smile. But a sudden stab of pain took his breath away, stifling any chance at a reply. Through the gasping breaths that followed, he thought he heard the scrape of the off-kilter door being dragged open, but it could have been his imagination, as well.
It wasn't. Killian heard footsteps, urgent and self-assured, scuffling along the well-worn paving stones of the sanctuary in a manner very distinct from the ominous clicking he had grown accustomed to fearing. From an impossibly great distance, the garbled voice of his beloved called out,
"How's he doing?"
"Still with us," reported Jones, similarly remote. "I was just telling him how much trouble the pair of you are in."
Killian shuddered at the arrival of another being; it was so deeply ingrained that even the fuzzy outline of Emma's calmly worried face could not overcome the instinct. Her gentle touch on his knee sent a shock of pain and fear sizzling down to his toes. He hissed, then stammered an apology. Emma ignored the reaction. She had in her grip a ragged brown blanket, which she unfurled and gently spread over his lower body.
"Almost," she promised in a whisper. Unrolling other scraps of fabric intended as temporary bandages, she added, "I'm pretty sure I heard sirens out there. This is almost over."
Even in his near-stupor, Killian somehow made sense of the words. He exhaled once, closed his eyes, and began to silently weep.
