One of my red flags (? Is that the right term to use) is probably the fact that I want my ocs to be happy and have good relationships, which takes away the funny and the interesting. The trauma is there but I won't rest unless they have a good ending. Would it be more interesting if the ending was bad? Surely. Do I have the guts to do it? Absolutely not. Wouldn't it be interesting for 2 of my ocs to have a toxic relationship whose themes are explored and made interesting? Yes but I'll be sad if my character and their significant other aren't all cutesy and happy with one another. I would be making an antagonist/villain with the idea that my characters will finally dislike someone, but then I feel bad for them, give them a redemption arc and throw them in the main group. They're all friends now. In the early stages of a story I am making a character used to be the main villain set out to conquer the world (don't comment on it I was 12) and now he's a very innocent and sensitive person

“I think we should stop seeing each other.” 

the last thing you said to Fontaine before you guys became no-contact for weeks.  Lately, you've been worried about Fontaine both mentally and physically. Losing homies and being around streets he got no business being in. but every time you mention any concern for him, his ears go mute. Him saying shit like “I’m cool” and “I’m fine” never cleared your cloud of fear. Yet, he continued his shenanigans. You knew as someone who grew up with a good family and a great upbringing, you shouldn’t be dealing with someone as reckless as him let alone dating. But deep down you loved him. You loved how he had a soft spot for you, or how he always reassured you whenever you were feeling unmotivated or unwell, even when he’d run baths and rub your feet as you rested. You knew Fontaine was a good person, all you wanted was for him to be more careful. 

You told yo-yo about your recent breakup and all she could say was

“I told you niggas ain’t shit, at least Fontaine isn’t.” she’s folding her clothes while you sit at her house head to the knees seconds away from breaking down. “He coo’ as a friend but relationship? Girl…. If toxicity was a city, that man would be mayor, believe that!” she whistles. She always did when she talked about anyone. Both bitches and niggas. You didn’t know how to live without him. Not only was he your lover, but he was your friend. Best friend at that. You’ve been through thin and thick together. Being each other’s comfort on different days and different nights. What were you thinking? You couldn’t live without him.

This was three weeks ago

Now, you're sitting at your desk organizing your planner, adding stickers, and color-coding events with colored pens and highlighters till you get a call. You look at your phone and notice the call came from an unknown number. “Now who the hell..” you whispered to yourself. It didn’t take till the 5th ring for you to just say fuck it and answer. You held the phone up to your ear, slowing down your breathing to try and hear something from the other end, till your heart dropped. 

“y/n?”

The familiar deep voice. The tone, the way he said your name, everything made your eyes widen from realization.

It was Fontaine.

You frown your eyebrows as your throat tightens. What happened to seperating? What happened to no contact? You felt sick. all of your love, your concerns, and your worries for Fontaine came all at once. You gasped lightly as you whispered his name. 

“I miss you, I wanna see you again”

Your heart sinks, just when you’ve already heard enough. You ended things with Fontaine. You were done with him. He should be done with you, so why is he calling you? and from an unknown phone number at that? “See me again? Fontaine, what do you not understand by separating? Your tone obviously sounded pissed. You were upset. This wasn’t gonna help anything between you guys. But deep down, you were happy to hear from him. You were more than glad to know that he’s still alive and okay.

“Look, I know we suppose to be alone n shit but lemme at least see yo’ pretty ass one last time, end things on good terms.”

One last time.

You take a deep sigh. 

“That’s it, one last time”

You tried to exchange a place to meet up but he insisted to pick you up and take you out for “lunch n shit.” You started getting dressed, wearing something casual but sexy, to remind Fontaine of what he’s gonna miss out on. Wearing your favorite perfume combinations, lathering your deep color legs with cocoa butter. you made sure to throw on anything Fontaine couldn’t resist. As soon as you heard the two honks from out your window, you knew it was go time.

You open the door to Fontaine smoking. The blunt between both his thick lips and his rough fingers, the view of it could make you bite your lips. Fuck the lunch date and fuck the back seat you needed him in the driver’s seat right then and there! But you wasnt gonna admit that especially with the position you were currently in. he noticed your googly eyes toward him causing his lips to sneak a smile. “Y’tryna smoke?” he lends you the blunt but you shake your head as you shake your hand in the same direction. “I’m here for lunch, not no smoke sesh” you declined. “Mkay” he sets the blunt down as he shifts the gear and drives off. slouching on the car seat, left-hand steering while the other on his thigh, manspreading with the most obvious tent in his pants. The view made your legs quiver. 

“You mind if we make a stop real quick?” the male asks without moving his sight away from the street. “Nah do what you gotta do.” you weren’t expecting anything crazy, but you also weren’t expecting him to park in some random ass empty parking lot. “I’d be lying if I said I ain’t miss you,” Taine says. But it was quiet. So quiet that it took time to understand what he said. “taine, don’t start this shit with me, I came here for lunch, not so you can convince me to stay with you while you do what I left you for.” your tone started from upsetness to disappointment. “I love you, and there ain’t nothing that’d change it, but it’s draining having to worry about where you are and even if you’re alive” You look down as you fidget with your hands. “I had to grieve someone who’s still here so I wouldn’t have to once you’re gone.” he understood how you felt but unlike you, he had a rough upbringing. Being around drugs and introduced to dealing at a young age. of course, it was gonna be hard and nearly impossible to get out of what he started in. he loved you dearly but he knew it would be a crazy idea to just up and go. He sighs as he licks his lips.  “Lemme try to figure shit out, I ain’t promising nun, but I’ll try to reduce all the crazy shi, ight?” you look at him with deception. “You sure? I don’t gotta worry about whether ya ass is injured or dead?” you frown. “I ain’t say allat, I said ill try. It’s gonna take time” you sigh. You’re more than happy that Fontaine is at least trying to get out of what he’s in. The awkward silence filled the room quickly.

“But, until then” Fontaine stretches as he lets his seat down. “How bout you tell me why you came out like that, just for lunch” he mocks you as you smack your lips at the question. “Damn, I can’t look good now?” you smile, analyzing Fontaine. You knew Fontaine for years. You knew what he liked and when he liked it, and as of right now, he was ready to take ya ass to poundtown. “Nah, unless there’s a reason you wore them scents ykno’ i like.” you had that man looking up and down in greed and lust and you’d be lying if you said you weren’t feeling the same way either. After moments of intense eye contact, you were on top of Fontaine. grinding your sweats on his jeans, moaning through the messy, passionate kiss, hands holding his locs, desperate for any and all of Fontaine. Hands gripping your ass through your sweatpants, seamlessly and eagerly pulling them off while kissing your glistening breasts as he pulled down the zipper, teasing you as he planted hickies from the neck down. Lord, how were you gonna explain to yo-yo how they suddenly got there? 

You knew this was wrong, you knew ‘one last time’ would turn into multiple. But you couldn’t stop.

“I missed you so much, I missed this” he mumbled in between each kiss. Each one being sloppier and more passionate. You couldn’t say anything. You were so caught up in the pleasure that all you could do was sigh and moan. “Damn I see you missed me too” he grins as he rubs his fingers on your clit, spreading the wetness all over your inner thigh. “Don’t you think that’s why I-” You get interrupted by the male’s thick fingers teasing his way inside. You couldn’t do anything but grip his shirt and rub yourself against him to get anything from him. “Please don’t stop Fontaine..” you gasp, lying your forehead against his shoulder. All you could do is gush and melt onto him. “Im not gonna stop ma,  haven’t seen ya’ass in a month and i still know what you like” and with that you fell apart, cuming all over Fontaine hands. Rolling your eyes back and crying, practically screaming his name.

After a moment you finally catch your breath slightly raising your head up to look at Fontaine’s reaction and his cheesy ass was smiling. “Damn you must of really missed me” he laughs at the mess you have yet to see. “huh?” you sigh as you look back and notice a nice-sized wet spot on his pants. “shit im so sorry i didn’t mean to-” you get caught off by a heavy sigh “shit! how we supposed to eat when I look like I dun’ pissed myself” you laugh. “You can wear my sweater around your waist” you suggested but Fontaine had a different idea. “Nah, ima change at the house after i finish what you started” he lazily wraps his arm around you enjoying your defense argument on how he started this whole thing.

We all knew that one last time was gonna be a few.

I'm assuming this actually isn't the past but this is what's currently going on because this doesn't feel like he's met them yet. He's currently just focused on himself and those around him. He's very anxious about what's going on in his life. Like the responsibilities of his job could be keeping him up at night. This feels like he's just carrying around a whole lot of weight but he's refusing to ask for any help or even to just reach out and vent to someone else. Right now, it's like a crushing weight on him, he could be making it a bigger deal than need be, but that's not my place to say that lmao. He's valid in how he feels about this situation.

At some point in the future, he's going to end up coming to the conclusion that he needs to tell someone. This ends up being his future spouse. I think they might start out at friends, like they met at a bar and just kind of took things from there. He could end up just venting everything out to this person and that's kind of how they meet. He might end up going to this bar/club with a friend or they could meet through a friend. Just some type of social atmosphere.

This person is definitely going to challenge him. He's going to be stubborn about wanting to expand on his thoughts about marriage, relationships, etc. He doesn't want to change how he feels about it. He has his own ideas on it and this person is brining forth new thoughts about it and it's very frustrating for him. He seems like the type to want to stick to what he knows in terms of certain topics like romance, etc. Very rigid in those values.

He no longer has to deal with this person's shit anymore. He could have been warned that this person wasn't going to be doing him any favors. He should still be worried a little bit about this person. They could do something, who knows what but he should be careful.

He's presently creeping on his future spouse. He's a very observant person. He's paying attention to what they have to say rather closely. He's just friends with this person right now, I don't think he's made any sort of romantic move towards them yet. He's trying to be strategic about how he goes about moving closer to this person, like the weirdo he is. He's just trying to feel the vibe out first, I think (I hope, lmaoo).

His future spouse has some healing to do but I don't think they are really wanting to. They are refusing to work on themselves. They kind of just want to stay as they are for right now. They could still be holding onto past hurt and not willing to trust Minho with his intentions. They could be thinking he's coming across rather snake-y. Them holding back from healing is going to stall the connection and do more harm than good.

Before meeting his future spouse, he's busy off completing things on his bucket list career wise. He's making his dreams a reality. He's trying to make sure he is in a good place before even thinking of dating anyone. He's kind of sticking to himself and not really focused on his romance life. Changbin needs to work on loving all the parts about himself before he even thinks about bringing in a romantic interest into his life, mainly, accepting the more unlikeable parts he feels about himself.

It feels like they meet through work. Like he's working his ass off for his future and then all of a sudden someone comes in to kind of sweep him off his feet. Yes, Changbin (like the little princess he is) is getting swept off his feet. He's not making the move, this co-worker is. But because he is so focused on what he's trying to accomplish, he's being a little bit oblivious to what this person is actually doing with him. He's so cute, I can't! This is a fated connection, obviously, but he won't know that, I feel that the other person will definitely have some type of clue. They will feel it in their gut, their intuition.

When it finally clicks with him what this person is doing, he's going to be kind of stuck between wanting to seriously pursue this person or keep working towards his career goals. He's going to have to strike a balance between the two. He can't be giving more energy to the other, it's not going to work that way. Again, this whole thing is going to feel like a bigger issue than it is. He just needs to find the correct way to fix it and figure out a balance that works for everyone involved

He wants a future, he wants harmony in his "marriage" (future spouse in my mind doesn't necessarily mean marriage, it means for your forever partner).

He wants to be someone one's wish fulfillment in a partner. He's making changes to himself to become an ideal partner so he can attract his ideal partner. He could meet this person during this change, maybe at a coffee shop or something. It feels like it's a meet-cute thing. I feel like he shoots his shot pretty much right away, unlike the previous members who take their time

He ends up getting to that place of being that ideal person, now it's a matter of "popping the question". I feel like when he does this it's going to be very romantic. Very much corny. This is the most expressive I think he's been outwardly to anyone and it's so cute!

Starting out, currently, he's going through some type of heart break. Some type of romantic connection might have just recently ended. I get the feeling this was a situation-ship. This person could have left him, I don't think he left them. He's in his own head thinking about all of the what ifs. What if he's done things differently? What if he did x instead of y? That type of thing. He's keeping himself in this unhealthy repetitive thought process.

Present: 10 of swords, the moon

When he meets his future spouse, he's going to still be in his feelings. He could meet them at like some kind of outing. Some type of party, maybe with friends could be a company party but more than likely a friend's party. But anyway, he's still going to be holding onto all of this stuck energy. The thing is, there isn't anything he could have done differently to keep this person. Nothing, this person just wasn't meant to. When he meets his future spouse, he isn't going to be in the best place mentally still. He's also tied up with work, so initial communication between the two could be sparse.

He needs to change his thought process before he starts to seriously pursue his future spouse. Otherwise, he's setting the whole thing up for failure. Everything is very one sided and he hates it!

He's going to be debating if he should leave them or not. He wants it to be equal give and take with this person but things are not balancing out the way he wants them to. He just wants them to be doing the same for him. What he's putting out he isn't getting in return and I feel like he's just like okay, this isn't what I want but I do care about this person a lot, should I leave? Should I tough it out? If you are not receiving what you know you deserve, leave! If it's meant to be it will be! He's kind of holding out hope that this person will change but I don't think that they are willing to just yet.

He's going to end up leaving this person for a while. He's going to find the strength to leave this person and work on himself. He's being told to stay patient with this person when he does leave. He might want to lose his cool on them but he has to remain calm. He's also being guided to kind of wait for this person, meaning keeping the door cracked for them, just a little. This person will eventually come around and be who he needs them to be once they realize that they screwed up with him.

If he keeps thinking the worst, he's only going to get what he's "asking for". He needs to be more positive if he wants this to work out!

Well, his fears are correct because I do see that he ended up making this offer towards them and they shut him down. They might end up taking some time away from one another until he can get his feelings together or they can figure out what they want. But he does regret even coming forward and saying anything about his feelings. He really shouldn't. There is no shame in being honest in how you feel! He felt like this person was his soulmate! They were his other half (and they might be)!

He doesn't take long to get over it because he gets right back on the horse and tries again with this person! This time things are a little different. This person is trying to come to terms with trying something serious with him. They may not have been giving that many hints to one another about how they felt towards each other.

He feels like this person is his person. Like 110%! He has complete hope that this is going to work out the way he wants it to. He might have already made an offer towards this person. The ball could be in their court, right now and he's just hoping that they agree. He feels really good about this person. He's currently feeling really anxious about it but he knows whatever happens, he'll be fine. He'll be good but he's really hoping it works out!

It looks like he's going to get what he wants from them. They are both going to be so happy about how this goes. They both are willing to put in their whole hearts into this. 1. feelings: ohhhhhhhh my god. he literally has been my favorite character of all time for the past year or so? i cant get him out of my brain 😭 i think hes such an incredibly tragic character that deserved so much better than the shitty hand he was dealt :( i feel ill about this freaking guy.

2. romantic pairings: main romantic ship is definitely him and mariana! at first they were the definition of a toxic, loveless marriage (still pretty much are LMAO) but i think, especially after their conversation in purgatory, they were genuinely really good together. like, them joking around and being really sweet was so, like, augghhhh 😭😭😭 but like. the toxic marriage was so fucking funny to watch 😭 i laughed so hard i started crying during the trial of juanaflippa LMAOO

2.5: another romantic pairing is him and cellbit because. dude. their conversation during the dia de los muertos stream was SOOOOOOOOOOO omg. it lives in my head rent free 😭 i think they would only serve to make each other SO MUCH WORSE and i am here for it (yeah cellbit is married but like. slime had a mega crush on that man theres no denying it, and me personally i think their relationship (romantic or not) is SOOOOOO fascinating, especially during slime’s code arc)

3. non-romantic otp: slime and baghera!!!!!! they are the definition of friendship soulmates to me LMAO. baghera trying so hard to be there for him even when NO ONE ELSE WAS and the infection was getting so bad……. ough……! but also, their funny moments are EVERYTHINGGGG to me. the fish joke and the karaoke and all their silly little conversations… gah…….. 4. unpopular opinion: idk how unpopular this is but like. i wish purgatory never happened 😭 like it was SO MUCH FUN while it lasted, but the overall impact it had, especially on qslime, was DEFINITELY not worth it lmao. like, it completely shoved all of his lore and buildup out of the way in favor of the event, and then????? he wasnt ever told to log back on???????? (context xi: the admins on the qsmp handled a lot of lore for the players, and slime’s lore really started to pick up just before the purgatory event. when the event was over, multiple players were told to not log on for “lore”, but slime and one other guy (pol) were never let back onto the server 😭 like, they straight up forgot about him even though he was SUPPOSED to have made it out of purgatory) i dont really have much more to that. bolas was fun, wasnt worth my cubito never getting anymore lore tho

5. something i wish happened: i wish we got an ending… or closure……… or something………

because!!!!! like!!!!!!! his story was going SO WELL (in a pacing and interest sense, the character was SUFFERING lmao) and it was really coming together!!! the pacing and buildup were AMAZING and it really looked like it was going to reach its peak after purgatory!! but, alas. he was forgotten. and so was his lore. because we NEVER saw codeflippa again. or him. or his code infection. and im never going to be over it.

i really need to go back and rewatch the streams to brush up on my qslime brain but. yeah!! thank you for indulging me :333 (if any of this was confusing or smth lemme know and i can clear it up!!)

Look I'm not one of those people who believe Kishimoto decided to have Hinata and Naruto end up in the middle part of Shippuden. I believe he decided in the very last arc but he wanted to sound smart so he said he decided earlier on. Otherwise, they obviously would have more scene together. In Shippuden, they have only three scenes together ; when Naruto came back, the pain attack and the neji death scene. That's it. In the original Naruto, they probably have less than ten canon scenes not including fillers.

So I'm sorry I'm one of those who wasn't convinced by The Last. They literally had a basic villain go after Hinata who was cringe btw (the villain). They gave Hinata op powers which she doesn't have in the novel 👀. Despite having op powers, they made her the damsel in distress. Very "The hero saves the princess" cliche. Again, to justify them being together. I mean Naruto can't differentiate his love for ramen and romantic love so how??? He was just being nice to Hinata just like he does to everyone. He stood up for her just like he does for everyone.

Don't get me started on the Sakura Sasuke relationship 🤣. Cringe. They never knew each other. The whole Sakura's love for Sasuke saved him doesn't make sense. They spent barely a year in their genin year before sasuke left. Sasuke tried to kill Naruto and Sakura multiple times. Then at the end of the war, Kishimoto tried to do the "oh they have such a deep understanding between each other" which comes off as cringey. He gets her pregnant then leaves for years. She's literally a single mom who's broke.

I mean, Naruto in general is a mess, not just the ships if we're being realistic. Alot of plotholes, rushed endings, this and that, the w a r a r c, Kaguya, the way they rushed Boruto ehhh. Honestly, getting into Naruto is literally my biggest regret of 2020 :"DD

I also know a bunch of nh stans who have their complaints with their development. I wish Kishi gave more attention to his female cast really, thats all I fucking ask. If he did that one single basic thing, then maybe the endgame relationships wouldnt have been an asspull and theyd be given propper screentime with their love interest, both Sakura and Hinata. The Last tbh i think the writers played it safe and stuck to the whole Naruto shounen vibe thingy, so im not surprised it was plotted that way. Typical cliché shounen movie.

Sasuke and Sakura on the other hand eeeehhhh i can see why people like them. Sasuke's hot, he's your typical hot bad boy aad Sakura's hot and pretty too. Basic blue and pink trope. Aside from their canon interactions, fans have all the opportunity to play around with their dynamic but for me, its just sooo basic and so hetero and can easily appeal to any 16 yr old teenage girl, no wonder it has an active fanbase on twt and---- AM I MAKING ANY SENSE? Hi. I used to follow your old blog on a different account. Hope you're doing well. Do you have any tips on thinking up stories that are *not* dark and depressing due to subject material? The last story I was working on I had to quit because the backstory I was developing for my passive male character was super depressing. At times I enjoyed researching it, though what won out was the thought I was wasting my time looking into angsty things for something I wasn't even planning to publish. Now I want to write something a little happier. But I have the most experience in writing angst and cringe comedy 😅 thanks for any help you can give. Stay safe out there!

By the way, good on you for dropping that manga you used to follow. I was happy most of the characters lived, but other than that, it felt "meh" to me (granted, I didn't read all the way from the beginning). The author was probably going for a "people will always be fighting each other" theme, but some of the imagery of what happened after a time skip could definitely be taken as pro-fascist. And I was disappointed the protagonist basically said he wanted to bring about destruction! I'm glad I didn't spend any money to read it.

As far as “that manga” goes, I’ve kept tabs on it. I’ve been on the fringes for the last two-ish years; I dedicated something like four real life years to that fandom and mostly had a good time while I was there (made some friends I hope to keep for life), so it was one of those situations where I just had to find out how it ended. I realized at some point that I was in a very negative space in the fandom, and felt it was better to publicly drop the series and the blog associated with all of my meta/discussion than to play in what had become a toxic pool for me. I didn’t really want to drop the account after my time there, but I couldn’t have dealt with the nonstop questions/messages/etc that would have piled in over the years, and eh, when you’re done you’re done. I criticize Hallmark television for fun, now, instead. It’s a lot less stressful! And literally nothing is That Deep so there’s very few delusions, at least on the Tumblr side of things. (Reddit, however, is insane, but I don’t post in the fandom there.)

As far as writing advice goes, I am going to apologize in advance for muddled thoughts. I just got out of work and have been staring at numbers all day, so it’s hard for me to think lmaoo.

In my opinion, any sort of character or personality type/flaw/whatever could have developed via a negative OR positive influence/catalyst, so that’s something to consider. I also think people tend to reach for “sad” or “traumatic” pasts either as a way to cope with their own issues/pasts/whatevers, or because it’s the “easy explanation” for why a character is the way they are.

If you WANT to write things a certain way, it’s sometimes a matter of changing the lens through which you’re viewing life, the story, the characters, or character writing in general. This is never easy, especially when you find a genre you feel comfortable in, but it’s always possible. When I was in college and submitted an autobiographical piece (Rot Tooth) for a creative writing final, I received multiple comments from classmates and even the professor that my talent/skill was in writing comedy. COMEDY!!!! I don’t think anyone who has read my writing from the last decade would say that I was a comedy writer. I stopped labeling ‘fics as humor/romance so long ago I can’t even remember when it was. But boom. I had written a comedy piece.

I don’t think I can ignore that most of the comedic elements in Rot Tooth were brought about because humor is one of the ways in which I cope with things, but it was also a very conscious choice I made. I wanted people to be able to engage with the story without being grossed out, without getting bored, without feeling that it was a poor-pathetic-me story, and humor was the classiest way to do it. Here, read this long story that includes journal entries from Ye Olde Livejournal days, but it will make you laugh often enough that the depressing aspects of the story don’t weigh it down too much! It was probably the only way to make the subject matter widely palatable. 

As often as I joke about characters or scenes or moments that “just write themselves” the author does have control. I mostly write fanfiction, so let’s go with examples from that.

I’m (very slowly) working on a ‘fic called Three Years which features a character who, when last seen, was headed off to serve a prison sentence. They haven’t been on the show for three years and thus I assume they have been serving that sentence for the last three years. The story starts when this character is released from prison. They are a woman. This is a historical piece of fiction. Prisons were vile to women and yet...this is fiction. I have a choice. I get to choose. Does she get to start her life off carrying 25 bags of trauma or just 2? It would be unreasonable to expect that someone, especially a woman, who was imprisoned for 3 years in the early 1900s wouldn’t have some issues (at the very least, the isolation would have been awful), but it doesn’t really have to be much worse than that. It doesn’t.

I have the power to choose.

A character has anger issues. Sure, he could have had a traumatic past with an abusive parent who took his anger out on him or his mom or whatever...or maybe it is an inherited personality trait and the parent figure with the problem was never really That Bad about it, but seeing it normalized makes it harder for the character in question to realize it’s a huge problem and part of their character arc is realizing they need to get help, not because they don’t want to be like their dad, and not because they hate their dad, but because they just want to be a better person/they don’t want to let that struggle consume them.

Someone’s sweetheart goes off to war. Guess what? They don’t have to die there to force a traumatic past. They don’t have to come back a raging alcoholic either. Maybe the time apart, and the time fighting a war just puts a natural sort of crack in the relationship by making it clearer to each character what they want in life/what matters to them in their life.

A character is super passionate about their work/hobby. Maybe they have ADHD and it’s a hyperfixation. Maybe they’re autistic and it’s a Special Interest. It doesn’t have to be “their parents ignored them and forced them to be alone all the time and they used this thing to cope so it means everything to them because it’s always been there.”

Maybe you have a character whose greatest fear is losing the people they love. It doesn’t have to be because a pet died in their arms when they were four and it traumatized them. It doesn’t have to be because they only have one person they love in the whole world. It can just be a thing because that’s a valid fear literally anyone can reasonably have, and maybe it’s a bigger deal because they don’t have siblings or aren’t close to many people! (And the “aren’t close to many people” thing doesn’t have to stem from trauma, either. Most busy adults for example who get to choose their friends, are just like that.)

A perfectionist might just have the personality type; it doesn’t mean their parents criticized everything they ever did. A person with three failed marriages might hesitate to fall in love and try again but it doesn’t have to be because those three failed marriages were abusive. A quiet character may just be shy or introverted by nature. 

I think everyone carries some kind of trauma with them, so it’s never unreasonable to have some in a person’s past (you can’t write an ugly character without having to think about the fact that they carry some trauma from what it’s like to grow up ugly), but it doesn’t have to define them. It doesn’t have to overshadow everything else in their past.

You can always ask yourself, “Why am I reaching for angst every time I create a backstory?” Literally everyone has some kind of angst. Most kids were hurt by things said to them in school, for example, or made fun of for some reason. Most people did something extremely embarrassing as a kid and never got over it. There are a thousand little moments in our adult lives that go back to these little points—you might call them the tiny traumas. But they’re not defining. They’re not so heavy they also live in the present. Not all of them.

Why do you reach for the darkest corner? Why not for the light? Or a middle ground?

I encourage people to write basically whatever floats their boat, but it sounds like you’re at a point where you just feel weighed down by that sort of stuff, and that’s not a great way to feel, especially when it discourages you from working on a project entirely.

My final suggestion: look at some of your favorite characters from various types of media. Are they all traumatized? What are their defining characteristics? Black Beauty has some depressing stuff in it, but is ultimately a story with a happy ending. Pride and Prejudice has drama, but nobody’s past is filled with the darkest stuff imaginable. North and South has awful things to consider in it (cotton mills were sooo awful) but the characters are not wildly traumatized people.

What kind of story are you trying to tell? Do the characters need to be traumatized to tell it? Does the story have to be dark to get across the message you want to send? 

Way back in the day, when I was into “that manga” I made an RP blog for a one-off character that nobody gave a damn about. Like, he was so one-off that even back in those days nobody even remembered him having existed. It was sort of a joke RP blog that wasn’t supposed to be serious. The only canon information we had about this character was that he enjoyed drinking. I decided to make him a lighthearted character because the series was pretty dark and I wanted to send people hilarious starters instead of wading through the muck of depression with everyone else’s sad, abused characters. I decided his family was old money and he had a brother. Nothing super traumatizing in his past. Some family issues but not the sort of thing that would haunt anyone. He was not traumatized in his recent past any more than other characters were. Mostly just “a regular guy.” I really loved RPing him. He was fun! The story could get heavy but he didn’t have to be.

Anyway, dive head-first into the dark angst if you want, but if it’s not necessary to tell the story you want to tell, just remember you don’t have to go there. You have the choice.

1. What was your first impression of the roleplay community on Tumblr? And what’s your impression of it now?

I honestly don’t remember what my first impression was? It was so long ago and I think I was just in the DC comics fandom. I wanna say it was mostly welcoming but there was a clear hierarchy of what rpers rped with who (aka they had standards and ohgod i was terrible at it so i don’t blame them for not rping with me?) My impression is that you’re gonna get different receptions based on your fandom and every fandom has its hookups, not even considering the whole HC/mainstream acceptance of whats-what in a fandom. Getting into a new fandom is terrifying af. 

6. What are your thoughts on the current roleplay trends on here right now?

I REALLY wanna try to do a pinned post thing, but I don’t know how? I like that a lot of blogs are getting super simple and minimalistic? Like before the more complex a blog the better it was- which is sort of a shallow concept but lbr often times a nice blog theme kinda gives you a hint about how serious an rper is. but i’m glad its simplifying now for ease, visibility and just accessibility. i used to get sooo lost on people’s blogs trying to find pages.

7. What is the one trend you miss the most that’s no longer popular or seen as much as it was before?

only for the sake of ease for me? the old 100x100 icons. i know the thing is now is like 60x60 and honestly i do like it better because its not quite so distracting as larger icons and its only made to hint at expression (relying on icons to carry the emotion of a thread is such a bad thing) but dear lordddd making icons is just a pain and its easy to copy & past 100x100s.

a friend on deviantart got me into it? prior to that i just wrote fanfic and drew and they were like hey rp with me??? and i was just....”what’s that?”. its been mostly cool ever since?

first impression: ohthankgod they get me. because guys i only have so much energy and spoons and attention span. i cannot do just open to everyone i’m sorry. mental health safety rail here.

send me an ask, like a starter or hmu in the ims- its that simple. mostly though i need good mun-to mun communication? i love plot heavy stuff and if its just an occasionally ask here and there then i won’t be as involved as you may like so just come talk to me? i don’t bite and generally i always ship the ship so come at me folks.

i don’t have anything specific? generally darker threads? i used to go pretty dark, but i have drawn a line and also i’m older so i think i’m in a better mental health state and in knowing whats cool and not? so yeah gimme darker twisted stuff like toxic relationships, torture, mental manipulation...ect. if me and my rp partner are good with communication i think i can rp just about anything? other things just having more action threads? i miss the action of writing like with dc comic muses sometimes? not that my muse was ever action tendant, but there were moments i miss it?

nothing is coming to mind at the moment except one line about luka which is sorta an obvious statement but i thought of it the other day and i’m like tHI SIS IT. THIS DESCRIBES HIM. and it is simply that  ‘he’s a scared boy trying to be brave’. like this is my luka epiphany and im sure other people noticed it before i did. 

21. What is it you prefer: angst, fluff, or smut? Why?

I love it all, but lbr.....its angst. angst gives you more room for feels and growth. pain is an excellent stimulator for darkness and light. you grow or you fall and honestly its fantastic to see which way your muse leans into.

Yeah honestly i mean most rogues dont mention or care about which rogues are dating you run the risk of injury plus some just feel it isnt any of their business just useful info. I think Jervis is the only one and its to complain about how annoying and gross they are he jokes that living with them has made him homophobic. It probably did take alot by surprise who the hell could deal and like jerome at the same time, but if oswald and ed or ecco and ivy or whoever zsasz ends up with for the week can find love in this twisted city shrugs. 

Course and this is just personal I feel Jim really is just lowest key homophobic like that season one scene with barbara after she tells him she dated Montoya just always felt off like idk. So yeah i can really see him trying to “help” Jonathan since Jerome is a lost cause. Jonathan is one of the rogues that if he really tried he could get better and stop his life of crime hes pretty sane. So Jim probably mentions is once after his capture or a run in and hed promise to make sure Jonathan gets actual help unlike last time. And well Jonathan wouldnt take to kind that himself and he certainly wouldnt like Jim trying to act like his friend. Bringing up Jerome would just piss him off more Jim has no idea what hes talking about all he knows is Jerome is crazy Jonathan already knew that but hes gotten to see and learn things about Jerome hes pretty sure only he knows minus a few with Jervis. Jim took his father his last family and in a way even if he doesn't like to admit it he has found a new one with Jerome and Jervis even the legion. Probably not good to go after one of the only rogues that can and will pinpoint your mental weakness and use it against you he does have a degree is psychology. So that encounter probably earned Jim a nice dose of gas and a broken nose.

Now if Jerome were to catch wind or Jonathan just told him since he seemed extra huffy after this encounter which is strange he didn't get caught so whats the biggie. Jerome would get angry Jim trying to stick is stupid nose in Jeromes business he usually takes it as a form of flattery but not this time trying to take something Jerome cares away oof. Hes gonna make sure Jim learns to stay out of Jeromes personal life would end with sadly Barbara Gordon becoming paralyzed he'd be sure to let her know its her father's fault and would torture Jim with footage of it sad he had to ruin a kids life do early, but hey one less future annoying captain gordon to deal with oh well

I rank Kagura as my least favorite just for the fact that I cant really relate to her I guess? I mean, she is okay, I think she is cute and all but I don't think violence is the way to go about her struggles and she is so much more worth than she gives herself credits for. In the end, I dont think I full understood her big struggle as much as the other characters and thats why she is at number 14, although I want her to be happy and full of love and support like the others ;w;

Akito is a complicated one for me man. Of course, in the beginning and throughout the manga you learn to really dislike her because she did some terrible things, specially to my baby boi Yuki and eye-.... But then when we learn more about her and everything she has gone through we start sympathizing with her but i..... cant just forget everything she did. I get she was traumatized since she was little, she became dependent on the zodiacs because of her father’s words and mother’s behaviour thus becoming a broken person with this big responsibility she didn't ask for. It really ticks me however, how much pain the others underwent through her, and even though its a healing process, the traumas and everything they suffered is still there which is why I cant place her higher. I do not hate her by any means, but she isnt my favorite person on this list either. I do ship her with Shigure and I think they help each other out, and they grow from the other.

I know he was doing everything for Akito’s sake to liberate from the curse and be with her so she is finally a “woman” but he always acted a bit shady xD?? I would have love to know more about his backstory, we dont get much from his motivations and character other than the perverted aspect and that he loves Akito lmaoo. I do think he is hilarious and I love the dynamic he has with Hatori and Ayame lol

To be honest I am pretty neutral about Ayame’s character. He is hilarious and I love how Yuki insults him every tike he gets the chance lolll. I like how throughout the story he tries to change to become a better brother to Yuki and person even though he is pretty extra most of the time about it. He has a good heart and even though he made some mistakes he owns up to them which in my opinion, makes him a good character <33 I love his friendship with Hatori lmaooo they balance each other out sooo well

I really like Kureno! He has gone through quite a bit and he needs a hug. I am sad thinking how most of his life he lead it pretty similarly to Yuki’s, apart from everyone and super enclosed to his relationship with Akito due to him breaking the curse and feeling bad about it. I do wish we would have gotten to know more about his personality and story, if we did I would have definitely ranked him higher! He really reminds me of Tohru’s father and I think Uotani is perfect for him <33 would have love to see more about the two of them and hopefully they expand upon it in the anime

Okay okay so I have a lot of thoughts on Ritsu. Manga Ritsu is okay, I really dont have much of an opinion on him due to him appearing only in a few chapters, I feel like from the Sohma’s, he is the one we get the least information about. But then the anime episode came out where they presented Ritsu and I thought they gave him so much more life and rounded personality where, I get to relate a lot to him? I am someone who is constantly apologizing for absolutely no reason and seeing him be all anxious and stressed about others interactions is big relate to me and I stan. I also think the whole dressing as a woman plot line is better dealt with in the anime and I hope we get to see more about his insecurities and troubles in the future because he is truly a very interesting character! I stan my one (1) anxious monkey.

Cinnammon rooooooolll. Kisa is such a cutie. I dont have much to say other than my mood every time I think about Kisa is hugging her like Tohru does because she is babyyyy. Also her bullying story is one I think many viewers and readers can relate a lot to and such an important topic I think they covered pretty well and I loveee. Also her and Hiro are one of my favorite ships because they work so well and asdfgh in this household Kisa is a queennn.

I really like Isuzu!! I am pretty bummed we wont get to meet her in season 1 of the Anime reboot but hopefully in the nest season! She is quite a complex character that I didnt really understand at the beginning but once we see how much she loves Haru and all that she does in order to protect and keep him save she really went up my list. She has gone through so much, from her shattered reality from her parents, Akito threatening Haru, her being locked up withour given any food.... The flashbacks of him telling Akito how he loves Kisa and the feeling of uncertainty and impotency when seeing the girl he loves being hurt by his actions and wanting to be good enough for her even though he is more than enough sdfghjasd. I am also a softie for older brothers who love their families *cough cough* spoiler alert: Momiji *cough cough* that I love me one angry boi

5- Hatsuharu Sohma

Cow boil! apart from the fact that I love love loveeee Haru’s design, I think he is also such a well build character! He is not only supportive of everyone (aka the loves of his life, Rin and Yuki xDD) but he is so interesting! His split personalities give him a cool trait (even though dark Haru doesnt appear much in the end of the manga) and I love how he helps everyone and makes sure those he loves are protected at all cost and happy. He is Rin and Yuki’s fan club stan leader and I am co-leader so we been stanning aye

4- Hatori Sohma

Fireflies by Owl City - “I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes, I got misty eyes as they said farewell”

Boooooy the next four to come are my absolute favorties and I would die for their happiness and love so *takes big breathe* I LoVE hAtORi sOhMAAa. To be honest when we first meet him I didnt like him much. I thought he was your usual dark deep character who doesnt talk much because he is too cool for everyone (which, he is) and that was that. But boi was I in for a riDE. His story about having to erase the memories from the woman he loves is one of the ones I cried through the most. I put myself in his shoes and wonder if I had to erase the memory of the person I loved the most, make them forget they ever met me, all our happy times, sad times, angry times.... No matter what its one of the most saddening moments and the whole scene is heartbreaking, which makes me love Hatori even more for the fact of how strong he is and selfless. He puts himself before others and he need to know he also deserves happiness and I am glad in the end he got it because homeboy needed a break ;w;. I also adore Ayame’s relationship with him xDD, he is like his idol and big same.

3- Kyo Sohma

Top three babyyyy. We have now my angry cat boi™. I mentioned it before but going into the reboot firsthand without reading the manga nor watching the first anime, I thought Kyo was going to be my absolute favorite character. I knew he would be the angry boi who was soft inside and probably had a tragic backstory™ that made him act the way he did and I am a sucker for those types of characters. And I love Kyo, I really do, specially when we find out more about his struggles and past. The exclusion he felt throughout his life for being the cat, the abandonment, feeling like he had no one and was ready to die because he didn't have any source of genuine happiness (well, apart from Kazuma ya know but stillll). Then he finds Tohru, the girl he promised to protect, the one that reminded him of the woman that helped him out all those years ago and I just.... poetic cinema at its finest. Kyo and Tohru make one of my favorite couples and I love how flustered and In absolute l o v e he is with her and Kyo is great man....

2- Yuki Sohma

THIS WAS ONE OF THE HARDEST DECISIONS OF MA ENTIRE WEEB CAREER SO EXCUSE WHILE I SCREAM. Yuki Sohma won my heart and entire soul throughout the series. I liked him from the start but he wasn't my favorite favorite at the beginning you know? I thought he was isolated and thats why he didn't have much friends and he was perfect and what not but boi was I wrong and happy about it. I think one of the reasons Yuki is one of my favorite characters in fruits basket is how much I can see myself in him. Having the constant need of perfection while also wanting to connect with others but finding it hard is something I personally struggle with and every time we learned a little bit about his backstory my heart broke. Everything Yuki had to go through, the rejection, the isolation, understanding that you are loved and not a burden, falling in love with someone, finding that figure of a mother/friend he always yearned for.... The complexity of Yuki’s character is astounding and I love my rat boi so so much.... When he joins the student council, finding his little group of friends and opening up to a more carefree and true Yuki, forgiving those around him and going and eye- YuKI IS MY BABY RAT BOI AND STAN HIM OR PERISH FROM HERE ;w;

1- Momiji Sohma

*Clears throat* *trumpets sounds intensify* *stands on podium* I LOVE MOMIJI SOHMA WITH ALL MY HEART AND HE MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS. Thats it. Thats what I want you to get out of this post. I don't know if this is maybe an unpopular opinion-ish but Momiji’s backstory of his mother rejecting him, saying awful things, him having to accept being forgotten by his mother and sister whom he loved, not even being able to live with his family, is one of the most heartbreaking ones of fruits basket. Maybe its like what I said with Hiro and I am a sucker for big brothers that love their families, the sad smile of Momiji, my baby, angel, perfection when he sees his family and not being able to be with them, him loving Tohru but letting her go and be with Kyo because its her happiness that matters to him and I am-..... The selflessness of Momiji and how much of a sweetheart he is, his heart of gold and always being there for those around him, that moment where Akito was looking for Tohru and he got hurt trying to defend her.... Momiji is one of my all time favorite characters. He is a precious bean and I will never not shut up about my love for ma boi <333
