I mean, I get where you're coming from but I don't think you're necessarily being fair in calling it 'unrealistic' or disingenuous to their characterization.
1) Zoro could absolutely add something worthwhile to WCI considering that it was Zoro, alongside Luffy, that got to him back at the Baratie. Seeing Zoro fight Mihawk - chasing his dream despite all reason - left a huge impact on him. This could have been mirrored in WCI by something like Zoro questioning him about if his dreams are really so easy to give up on. In the right hands, it could be a really good foil to the Baratie arc. Along with that, he knows just how far Sanji is willing to go for the crew, for *Luffy* via Thriller Bark. Him doing a 180 on WCI would be a cause for concern and perhaps even a reason for Zoro to see through the facade. Or Zoro being genuinely hurt by having the person he trusted to protect his back turn around and abandon them is also a good plot point to build on, and how this impacts his overall bond with Sanji, who despite everything he says, does value Zoro's input. Exploring the unspoken parts of their friendship is always welcome in fanfics!
2) Zoro is not blindly loyal to Luffy. He has in the past called Luffy out when he thought he wasn't acting as a captain should (Water 7 w/ letting Usopp come back scott free & Punk Hazard w/ yelling at him that they're in the new world and to take the fights seriously). He's not afraid to call Luffy out, it's just they more often than not are on the same wavelength - which isn't about loyalty per say but what is best for the crew as a whole. The crew comes first, not Luffy. Hell, he didn’t even have anything to say when Sanji kicked Luffy back in Water 7 right when he was about to reject Usopp.
3) Indeed Zoro isn't a very trusting person, but once the trust is there, he's generally pretty good about trying to consider all the angles when the person in question acts against it. You could see this in how he approached Nami and Robin's betrayals, keeping a relatively cool head. Melontee goes over it better in her video specifically about Zoro and Sanji's friendship. He's not one to jump to conclusions. Yes, Sanji does rile him up, but Zoro is smart where it truly counts.
4) Jumping off of that, the fact that Zoro seemed so miffed about Sanji leaving and was snapping at the others over it is out of character for him. It shows just how bothered and hurt he actually was compared to Nami and Robin. Because, despite their differences, Zoro and Sanji DO get each other. That's what makes them such a good team. Their ability to read each other and react appropriately does not end outside the battlefield. They just suck at communicating with words and like talking shit more often than not. But again, Zoro IS good at taking time to consider angles. He's not a wild dog who flies off the handle anytime someone hurts Luffy. They're the Monster Trio because they get each other! In different ways for each relationship, but all the same in the end. In a serious moment, I can absolutely see him being able to at least see through some of Sanji's lies.
It's a disservice to both their characters to claim they're actually incapable of having meaningful moments without combat.
5) And as for these WCI AUs being Out of Character, I frankly think it entirely depends on the writer. In the right hands, OoC moments are instead moments of character growth, an affect of the character being stressed in a way we haven't yet seen, or even character regression - where they fall back into old habits.
Along with that, I would argue that Nami in canon was kinda OoC in her reaction to Sanji beating up Luffy. She, of all people, should have been able to see through his actions or even understood Luffy's enough to trust him. She was there back when Luffy and Zoro took that beating at Jaya - this kind of non-aggressive reaction is not new of Luffy. Water 7 as well, with the fight between Luffy and Usopp, should have left her with a better understanding of how Luffy handles these things.
Instead, she lashed out and, arguably, made it harder for Sanji to return to the Strawhats. She basically confirmed his fears, that he wasn't welcome. Now, this is not hate or me bashing her, I do understand why she reacted the way she did and it is totally understandable considering how much she cares for Luffy. But that moment to me still feels out of her character. She wasn't trusting either Luffy or Sanji in that moment.
So, sure, Zoro might have complicated things further, but that's kinda the point of canon adjacent fics. To look at how canon could of gone if this or that happened. A flap of a butterflies wings and all that. Most Out of Character moments in fics are just badly written moments of attempted character development. Zoro and Sanji clearly have some sort of arc brewing in regards to the Death Pact so it's not unreasonable to see earlier progression by having him at WCI. Plus, Zoro is long overdue for a big character moment or having a breakdown of his own, lol.
For what its worth, I would have literally killed to have Robin and Usopp at WCI, my god that would have been so good. But that does not detract for Zoro also being a good addition. Like, c'mon, him hating sweets just to have him getting lost in a land entirely made of sweets, the comedy writes itself! XD
So, I mean, you're 100% entitled to your opinion, but these characters are quite multifaceted and can have surprising moments of progession.
I just came across a zosan post about Zoro on wci (again) and I have to say, you guys need to be realistic.
I love zosan, I really do, but Zoro on whole cake would have been a DISASTER. He wouldn't add anything to the story—he'd make things worse if anything. Zoro's not a trusting man, and he always puts the captain first. There's already so much tension between the two; even though they do actually like eachother do you really think Zoro has the emotional capacity to be considerate in that scenario??? Absolutely not. They would 100% end up fighting which would just complicate everything.
If anyone else should have been there, it's people who'd understand where he's coming from. People who've struggled with feeling like unnecessary weight to the crew and left because of it. Yes I'm talking about Robin and Usopp. Water 7 and Enies Lobby are arcs that make Sanji really shine in the crew as the one always chasing after the ones leaving, so wci paralleling that would have been absolutely perfect. (This has been said a lot before but it's TRUE and I will defend it to the end)
If you truly love zosan, maybe focus on scenes they already have??? Or things that actually could have happened—like, them reuniting on Wano after wci has a lot of angst potential. And it's a much better scenario than Zoro actually being on wci in my humble opinion. It just works so much better with their characters...
Take the personalities of characters into account when you're making ship content. Fanon only thrives when it's built on canon.

more stuff that’s not making it into the official piece - i have os much writing, idk what to do with it, please help
One thing about Taurus energy that has always hypnotized me is the way that the action of plant growth is actually stillness. Plants just sit there. To become giant, life-affirming tree temples, little seeds just sit there for years. They are extremely present, they sense sensations, and they respond; but their response is simply to be present in a slightly different way. Roots inhabit the soil and, in their stillness, move towards water and nutrients. Leaves and stems stretch out of the ground by inhabiting the edges of their cells in the way that feels the best. Plants are filled with energy, but it is not dynamic energy; it is a thickly still energy. I do not feel this paragraph articulates it in the way I want. I don't feel I've ever articulated it. I suppose one never gets to the center of a mandala. I hope I'll come closer one day, or find some other writing that has already articulated it.
There is something about the cycle of days and seasons that seems comparable to this kind of movement born of stillness. It feels like the breathing of earth. Breath is a small version of this cycle. Dusks are like exhales; dawns are like inhales. Autumns are like exhales; springs are like inhales.
Another example of this kind of movement/stillness could be certain kinds of chord progressions in music, especially repetitive ones. For example, a sequence of four chords that repeats over and over has, within itself, progression and teleology, but in the context of the larger piece, doesn't advance it into another section or anything like that. Pachelbel's Canon is like that; so is "Heart & Soul," and other vamps.
This is maybe a tangential postulation, but I have associations with Pluto and seasons/seasonal changes too. I associate Pluto with less predictable seasons. Like Taurus's slow churn, I see Plutonian seasons in terms of barrenness and potency, but the Pluto seasons are starkly exaggerated and less predictable. There are times when it seems like you have so much of something you could bathe in it. And then there are times when you lack something so completely it feels like you're in a desert. I guess the imagery of deserts and swamps works well for this postulation. Better: seasons of famine, etc.
But, back to Ceres and her seasons. Ceres the goddess creates the seasons. How? Through being present with her emotions. When Ceres feels grief, she contains her energy and does not reach out for warmth, because there is none. She is heavy. Her weight is kept low. So there is winter. When she feels joy, she returns in the sweetness of new bloom. She is lighter; the world is open to her embrace; into this feeling, her arms reach out and upward. So there is spring.
I find the connection between being present with emotions and the turn of the seasons very cool. People understand more and more that emotions are somatic, that is, body-made and body-stored, and our bodies are made of the same material as the earth. I freely interpret the emotional implications of the shapes of plants. Cool, thoughtful ferns, slowly unfurling. Willows spilling gently, enjoying their sway. Branches and leaves stretching into the sun, dancing/creating the forms of dancers because they are alive and the sun feels nice. Why shouldn't this be so? We think things need brains to feel emotions, but dogs feel emotions and they're not nearly as smart as we are, and rats and mice and fish are not as smart as dogs, and there are many serious people among those who study the potential of emotions in plants and water. I think as our understanding of emotion grows, we will understand the nature of natural sentience better.
Something that strikes me about the cycle of Ceres is that it's natural, and it's sad. I think that it's sad that Persephone dies. And yes, I do think she dies - even if she gets to come back, she still "goes to the land of the dead" which I don't think would be the land of the dead if she didn't die? Hard to explain. Possibly actually incorrect. So let's do seasons. Winter is natural, it comes every year, and it doesn't kill everybody. But it is harsh. It kills a lot of things, and it's sad for those things to die. It also makes actions harder to instigate, which means a lot of potential things don't get to be gestated or born, which is also sad, but in a more general way. Even though winter is ultimately a neutral force, its effects are still sad. The conclusion from this premise is that sadness is a natural part of a cycle, and not something to flee.
We don't like things to die. Taurus doesn't like things to die. We don't like letting our food go bad in the fridge. We don't like having to cut down a tree in the midst of its growth. We don't like to throw away a perfectly good anything with just one problem that could be fixed easily, but it's cheaper and easier to buy a new one. We want things to sustain, to be there with us as we tell our stories, to experience the world and adapt and grow, to accrue wisdom, to be a touchstone for many different times. Novelty also has virtues, but novelty does not have scarcity; so when something dies, it is sad and should be sad. And when our sadness harmonizes with our joy, we create our hope. We can't do that without experiencing the weight of our sadness.
At the same time, while it's best not to fight or resist sadness, I do think it makes sense to want to minimize it: to find a balance between the establishment Taurus energy and the transformational Scorpio energy that makes the seasonal dips not so huge. Taurus would choose to be totally still if it weren't for Scorpio, but transformation is necessary, and therefore death and grief are necessary, and the form that transformation takes is the rhythm of the seasons.

I see it this way. To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, Lolita to name a few are harmful and problematic but for years and years the school system requires these books to be read by 14-15 y/os. Also, a lot of classics we're forced to read are pretty racist. I didn't know if at 14/15 if I had a choice to skip them, but I felt like I had no choice. Now schools try to ban books like The Hunger Games, The Scarlett Letter, even Harry Potter. (1/5)
But now we have something called “Banned Books Week” where libraries and schools put them on a shelf for us to read b/c it promotes analytical thinking and the government shouldn’t be allowed to censor books. Not to mention, if I read a problematic book in a college level English class, the only way to prove my point is by reading the source material. A college professor would laugh me out of university if I wrote my paper like this: “Lolita is problematic because my friend said so.” (2/5)
I’m aware that there are some people who read these books b/c they get the giggles from doing whatever they please, but I honestly think it’s important for discourse for people to read those books if the content isn’t triggering to them specifically. For instance, with Carve the Mark I have read multiple reviews by POC on blogs and Booktube who did not see the racism AT all (the chronic pain issue is another story). I’m a POC so I decided to listen to other POC. If I had just listened to (3/5)
two non-POC say, “It’s racist! Don’t read it!” I’d never know how those two opinions might have been skewed a little. The natural course of action would be to seek out the source itself and read the book or listen to more than two opinions. As it stands, the CTM doesn’t interest me at all so I haven’t read it, but I based my opinion on people who DID read it anyway and were people like me. I personally can’t listen to a handful of people claim something until I have the source or context. (4/5)
I wouldn’t read a problematic book just to be funny and try to offend people, but because I can’t know what I’m talking about unless I have more information. If I went to college and my professor asked me to write a paper on CTM and my paper said, “Based on my sources from Goodreads, this book is problematic, here’s *their* opinion, not mine” the professor would fail me. Anyway, that’s just my thoughts. I get where you’re coming from but I just wanted to offer another explanation. (5/5)
6. Sorry, last thing!! Obviously, if a book is blatantly homophobic especially if written by someone who is NOT queer and the LGBT+ community says so, I personally would NOT read that book. If it relates to race, as I’m a POC I just feel obligated to seek out more information b/c many non-POC have claimed racism when, I, as a POC did not see any (or vice versa). Hiya! No worries about it being long, I’m really interested by this sort of thing so I’m happy to discuss it. I do understand what you’re saying, and I don’t disagree that it’s good to try and get all of the information so that you can form your own opinions however I do want to raise a few points.
You said that when it comes to books critiqued for racism you might read them anyway as a person of colour, but not if it was a book critiqued for homophobia. I think that’s a super important distinction to make there - because that’s you wanting to find out for yourself something that impacts your own lived experience. I don’t see that as harmful in any way, it’s you that’s being affected by it so you have a right to do whatever you want regarding that. It’s great that you listen to the LGBT+ community as well though, that’s what I’d love to see more of - white people listening to people of colour on issues impacting them, cis het allo people listening to LGBT+ people on issues impacting us, able-bodied people listening to disabled people and so on.
The issue with buying them just to find out for yourself what’s going on is that the publishers don’t know or care why you bought it. All they care is that they got your money. And if they get enough money then they’ll publish more books like that which is really the opposite of what we want. People can write whatever they like of course, I can’t stop them but I hope the aim for most of us is to get better and better representation. So it’s best not to buy these books if you can and prevent that from happening - but especially if you’re not the person impacted by them as I said. That’s why I personally feel it’s best to avoid the most harmful books as much as possible.
On your point about books like Lolita and To Kill A Mockingbird being potentially problematic, I don’t disagree with you however I think we have to take older books a little differently to books being written now. Attitudes at the time were different and - while that doesn’t make them right or okay in ANY way - we have progressed since then. Classes should discuss problematic elements and dissect them absolutely. But someone who writes something problematic now is a far far different problem than older books with outdated views.
Of course, all books (and films and shows and people) are problematic to some degree. It’s impossible not to be. When I say I found a book problematic I genuinely mean that the premise is narrative is so inherently flawed or harmful that it’s just not redeemable. As opposed to a book that only has one or two problematic lines in it in which case I would draw attention to those lines to warn people who may be hurt by it, but I would not discourage people from reading it.
Also, I do think it’s important to consider that even within a community or marginalised group, we all have different experiences and while we personally might find something okay, that doesn’t mean it’s not still harmful. Personally, I have read Carve The Mark because unfortunately I had ordered it before I heard about the issues and I made an effort before reading to read as many reviews as I could find (positive and negative) by people of colour. What I found was that while some weren’t offended or hurt by the issues, the issues being talked about definitely were there. Just different people take offence to different things. And I think that’s the case for a lot of problematic books - the issue is there, it just might not affect everyone.
Similarly, this is why I don’t like own voices books being critiqued as problematic - for example, I’ve seen reviews of a book by a bisexual author being called problematic because the bi main character is promiscious. Because everyone even in a community is so different we also have different ideas of what good rep looks like. And while being promiscious is a bi stereotype I’d like straight people to stay the heck away from, bi promiscious people do exist and them writing their own stories shouldn’t be critiqed for that.
At the end of the day, these are just my views and I’m not gonna jump on you if you disagree or if you read a book that I found to be harmful. I just want people to be aware and critical of these issues. Sometimes problematic fiction can cause real life harm or at least mirror it - black people being portrayed as violent savages in Carve The Mark does nothing to help black people being perceived as violent thugs in real life for example. If people choose to read it anyway then I can’t stop them, but ideally, I’d at least like them to be aware of those issues so they can discuss it and minimise the harm caused.
And that is why I never shut up about representation.

THE COURAGE OF INTEREST
So to that extent they know the email addresses of trusted senders and even the routes by which mail gets from them to me. When experts are wrong, it's often because they're experts on an earlier version of the world of content-based filtering will leave the spammer room to make. Object-oriented programming a la carte. Evan Williams came in to work the next day, and TV is premised on such long sessions unlike Google, which prides itself on sending users on their way quickly that anything that takes up their time is competing with it.4 So any new protocol is a big deal. The government could not do better than to piggyback on their expertise, and use investment by recognized startup investors as the test of whether a company was a real startup. Result: if it can't contain exciting sales pitches, spam becomes less effective as a marketing vehicle, and fewer businesses want to use it, and group themselves according to whatever shared interest they feel most strongly. He couldn't just let the site die.
This was the most powerful force of all. This sounds hard. If you're used to reading novels and newspaper articles, your first experience of reading a math paper can be dismaying.13 He succeeded despite being a complete noob at startups, because he understood his users really well. Venture investors, however, trust your gut.14 Maybe if you do it at any age? Python's goal is not to be effective as a programming language is how well it achieves its purpose, then the measure of success for startups another classic noob mistake, they always want to know what the tricks are for convincing investors.

Microsoft’s romance with open source software is on display at Build 2020
An absolute ton of new announcements has been coming out of this week’s Microsoft Build 2020 virtual conference for Windows developers. While cool, most of them are a little thin for individual reports—so we’ll get you up to speed on them in this roundup, with links out to each topic if you’re interested in more.

Windows Terminal 1.0 settings are modified in a very Linux-y way—by editing a big JSON-formatted text file, which pops up in Notepad when accessed from the Settings menu.

In addition to multiple tabs, you can open terminals in multiple panes on the same tab, using alt-shift-plus and alt-shift-minus to split vertically and horizontally.

As Windows 10—and Server 2019—pack in more and better command-line functionality, one of the parts of the overall experience that began looking shabby by comparison is the terminal itself.
Windows Terminal seeks to change that, and it has just gone 1.0. The terminal itself is open source and is available for perusal and/or hacking at Github under the MIT license. Microsoft’s own announcement makes a point of individually crediting 14 contributors by name and acknowledging hundreds more, which is a more-than-welcome sea change for those of us old enough to have lived through the Halloween Documents era.
As for the usability of the project itself—it’s promising but still needs work, from the jaundiced perspective of a daily-driving Linux user. We like the JSON-formatted Settings file, which can be spawned in Notepad with a simple menu click. We like the native support for both tabs and panes even more—but rough edges include the fact that, under default configs, an Ubuntu/bash shell suddenly turns into two PowerShell panes if you split it.
The problem is that the pane-split hotkeys only support creating the new panes with the default profile under Terminal, and the profile includes the interpreter loaded. In addition to changing the default profile—which is very nerdily done by copying and pasting GUIDs in the settings.json—clever users can work around this limitation to some degree by simply executing a different interpreter inside the pane, after the pane itself has been opened.
Terminal 1.0 also offers somewhat PuTTY-style copy-and-paste support—selecting text in Terminal doesn’t automatically put it in the copy buffer like it does on PuTTY (you need a more Linux-y ctrl-shift-C for that), but right-clicking in another Terminal pane instantly pastes.
There are plenty more features in Terminal, most of which seem to amount for now to “shiny”—background images, animated GIFs, scanlines and glowing text (to emulate ancient green-screen CRTs), and so forth. Azure Arc is—or at least will be—Microsoft’s one-stack-fits-all-services cloud-management tool.
The goal is for Arc to be as vendor- and type-neutral as possible, with support for managing Windows and Linux servers and VMs, Azure cloud services, and now Kubernetes container clusters from a single pane of glass.
It has been tempting to think of Microsoft and Canonical as locked-in partners with the emphasis on Ubuntu in Windows Subsystem for Linux, but Microsoft demonstrates continued vendor neutrality in Arc with an announcement of direct support and integration of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server—which has a larger overall footprint in Europe than it does in the United States, aside from some specialty platforms (such as SAP Hana Enterprise Resource Planning).
Although Azure Arc is still in preview (mostly public preview, with some features still in private preview) interested users can sign up to get started with it today.
Microsoft loves open source these days—here’s the Fluid framework to prove it
The Fluid framework was one of the more interesting announcements made at last year’s Ignite conference. Fluid enables document collaboration at massive scale and low latency—and it also blurs the lines between traditional document types, allowing simple and functional dynamic content embedding from one framework to the next.

Microsoft has been teasing us with Fluid integration into Office 365 apps since the framework’s initial announcement in September—this week, the company took things a step further by promising to open source the framework as well. Office 365 VP Jared Spataro announced that “Microsoft will be making the Fluid Framework open source, allowing developers and creators to use key infrastructure from Fluid Framework in their own applications.”
As exciting as this is, we’re a little worried about the follow-on social engineering implications—being able to easily embed fully responsive Office document functionality in arbitrary webpages may make it that much easier to confuse users into putting confidential data and credentials into places they shouldn’t.

Until now, developers have needed to sideload separate tools for that—perhaps using Teams in another window for instant messaging, or Mumble / Skype / Hangouts / whatever for voice. Today’s public preview brings the missing communication features directly into Visual Studio Live Share itself.

Project Reunion, unveiled Wednesday at Build 2020, aims to heal this divide somewhat by decoupling both APIs from the Windows OS and making functionality universally available to apps built under either API. For example, Reunion makes WinUI 3 Preview 1—the modern native UI framework for Windows—available to either UWP or Desktop (Win32) apps in the same way.
Microsoft is engineering Project Reunion openly and publicly on Github, giving non-Microsoft developers a chance to directly influence the future of Windows development.
Microsoft Teams adds bookings, bots, and broadcasts
Microsoft Teams is the next-generation messaging and collaboration application from Redmond, replacing what your cynical author used to call “Lync, Skype for Business, or whatever they’re calling it this week.”
Unlike Lync and Skype for Business, Teams has a functional Web interface. This makes it a much less painful experience for those who don’t or can’t install the native client directly onto their own PC—including, but not limited to, Linux users.
The news this week is integration of appointment scheduling and shift management directly in Teams itself, along with chatbots and support for third-party streaming services. Scheduling and chatbots are exactly what they sound like—and if you’re not familiar with the streaming option, think “interview on Teams, stream to the world via Open Broadcast Studio (or similar platform).”

By ditching its own proprietary rendering engine and collaborating with Google on the Chromium open source browser, Microsoft gained back a lot of available personnel hours and energy for innovation.

Microsoft might have lost us a bit with its latest integration, though—the browser is integrating Pinterest into its Collections feature, showing suggestions for Pinterest boards at the bottom of users’ Edge Collections, and allowing Collections themselves to export to Pinterest. Meh.

When you break it down, these words don’t mean what many people intend them to mean, because Docker and Kubernetes aren’t direct competitors. The Rise of Containerization and Docker
It is impossible to talk about Docker without first exploring containers. Containers solve a critical issue in the life of application development. When developers are writing code they are working on their own local development environment. When they are ready to move that code to production this is where problems arise. The code that worked perfectly on their machine doesn’t work in production. The reasons for this are varied; different operating system, different dependencies, different libraries.
Containers solved this critical issue of portability allowing you to separate code from the underlying infrastructure it is running on. Developers could package up their application, including all of the bins and libraries it needs to run correctly, into a small container image. In production that container can be run on any computer that has a conterization platform.
Advantages of Containers
In addition to solving the major challenge of portability, containers and container platforms provide many advantages over traditional virtualization.
Containers have an extremely small footprint. The container just needs its application and a definition of all of the bins and libraries it requires to run. Unlike VMs which each have a complete copy of a guest operating system, container isolation is done on the kernel level without the need for a guest operating system. In addition, libraries can be across containers, so it eliminates the need to have 10 copies of the same library on a server, further saving space. If I have 3 apps all running node and express, I don't have to have 3 instances of node and express, those apps can share those bins and libraries. Allowing for applications to become encapsulated in self-contained environments allows for quicker deployments, closer parity between development environments, and infinite scalability.
What is Docker?
Docker is currently the most popular container platform. Docker appeared on the market at the right time, and was open source from the beginning, which likely led to its current market domination. 30% of enterprises currently use Docker in their AWS environment and that number continues to grow.
When most people talk about Docker they are talking about Docker Engine, the runtime that allows you to build and run containers. But before you can run a Docker container they must be built, starting with a Docker File. The Docker File defines everything needed to run the image including the OS network specifications, and file locations. Now that you have a Docker file, you can build a Docker Image which is the portable, static component that gets run on the Docker Engine. And if you don’t want to start from scratch Docker even has a service called Docker Hub, where you can store and share images.
The Need for Orchestration Systems
While Docker provided an open standard for packaging and distributing containerized applications, there arose a new problem. How would all of these containers be coordinated and scheduled? How do you seamlessly upgrade an application without any interruption of service? How do you monitor the health of an application, know when something goes wrong and seamlessly restart it?
Solutions for orchestrating containers soon emerged. Kubernetes, Mesos, and Docker Swarm are some of the more popular options for providing an abstraction to make a cluster of machines behave like one big machine, which is vital in a large-scale environment.
When most people talk about “Kubernetes vs. Docker,” what they really mean is “Kubernetes vs. Docker Swarm.” The latter is Docker’s own native clustering solution for Docker containers, which has the advantage of being tightly integrated into the ecosystem of Docker, and uses its own API. Like most schedulers, Docker Swarm provides a way to administer a large number of containers spread across clusters of servers. Its filtering and scheduling system enables the selection of optimal nodes in a cluster to deploy containers.
Kubernetes is the container orchestrator that was developed at Google which has been donated to the CNCF and is now open source. It has the advantage of leveraging Google’s years of expertise in container management. It is a comprehensive system for automating deployment, scheduling and scaling of containerized applications, and supports many containerization tools such as Docker.
For now, Kubernetes is the market leader and the standardized means of orchestrating containers and deploying distributed applications. Kubernetes can be run on a public cloud service or on-premises, is highly modular, open source, and has a vibrant community. Companies of all sizes are investing into it, and many cloud providers offer Kubernetes as a service. Sumo Logic provides support for all orchestration technologies, including Kubernetes-powered applications.
How does Kubernetes work?
It is easy to get lost in the details of Kubernetes, but at the end of the day, what Kubernetes is doing is pretty simple. Cheryl Hung of the CNCF describes Kubernetes as a control loop. Declare how you want your system to look (3 copies of container image a and 2 copies of container image b) and Kubernetes makes that happen. Kubernetes compares the desired state to the actual state, and if they aren’t the same, it takes steps to correct it.
Kubernetes architecture and components
Kubernetes is made up many components that do not know are care about each other. The components all talk to each other through the API server. Each of these components operates its own function and then exposes metrics, that we can collect for monitoring later on. We can break down the components into three main parts.
The Control Plane - The Master.
Nodes - Where pods get scheduled.
Pods - Holds containers.
The Control Plane - The Master Node
The control plane is the orchestrator. Kubernetes is an orchestration platform, and the control plane facilitates that orchestration. There are multiple components in the control plane that help facilitate that orchestration. Etcd for storage, the API server for communication between components, the scheduler which decides which nodes pods should run on, and the controller manager, responsible for checking the current state against the desired state.
Nodes
Nodes make up the collective compute power of the Kubernetes cluster. This is where containers actually get deployed to run. Nodes are the physical infrastructure that your application runs on, the server of VMs in your environment.
Pods
Pods are the lowest level resource in the Kubernetes cluster. A pod is made up of one or more containers, but most commonly just a single container. When defining your cluster, limits are set for pods which define what resources, CPU and memory, they need to run. The scheduler uses this definition to decide on which nodes to place the pods. If there is more than one container in a pod, it is difficult to estimate the required resources and the scheduler will not be able to appropriately place pods.
How Does Kubernetes Relate to Docker?
Kubernetes and Docker are both comprehensive de-facto solutions to intelligently manage containerized applications and provide powerful capabilities, and from this some confusion has emerged. “Kubernetes” is now sometimes used as a shorthand for an entire container environment based on Kubernetes. In reality, they are not directly comparable, have different roots, and solve for different things.
Docker is a platform and tool for building, distributing, and running Docker containers. It offers its own native clustering tool that can be used to orchestrate and schedule containers on machine clusters. Kubernetes is a container orchestration system for Docker containers that is more extensive than Docker Swarm and is meant to coordinate clusters of nodes at scale in production in an efficient manner. It works around the concept of pods, which are scheduling units (and can contain one or more containers) in the Kubernetes ecosystem, and they are distributed among nodes to provide high availability. One can easily run a Docker build on a Kubernetes cluster, but Kubernetes itself is not a complete solution and is meant to include custom plugins.
Kubernetes and Docker are both fundamentally different technologies but they work very well together, and both facilitate the management and deployment of containers in a distributed architecture.
Can you use Docker without Kubernetes?
Docker is commonly used without Kubernetes, in fact this is the norm. While Kubernetes offers many benefits, it is notoriously complex and there are many scenarios where the overhead of spinning up Kubernetes is unnecessary or unwanted.
In development environments it is common to use Docker without a container orchestrator like Kubernetes. In production environments often the benefits of using a container orchestrator do not outweigh the cost of added complexity. Network automation helps more than just network admins
Systems administrators are the heart of any IT team. Since IT is arguably what keeps most modern organizations operating, then in some ways sysadmins are the heart of modern organizations. Of course network automation can make the lives of network engineers easier, but it can also benefit enterprises as a whole. Yet here’s an interesting quandary: does network automation even benefit systems administrators?
Sysadmins shepherd hardware, virtualization platforms, Operating System Environments (OSEs), and more. They must master multiple disciplines within IT, and are under the constant pressure to learn even more. The life of a systems administrator is one of trying to carefully balance the solving of immediate problems while investing with their future via automation to prevent these problems from recurring, additionally with lifelong learning.
As a profession, systems administration has been cyclical. In one part of the cycle the generalist sysadmin is championed. In the next, specialization is all the rage. The past decade has seen the generalist brought once more to the fore, as specialties such as “storage administrator” are automated away by clever software.
However, throughout the decades the physical networks have largely remained the jurisdiction of dedicated network administrators. If the networks belong to another team, how does automating them help the sysadmins?
Survival
Though mastery of the physical network has traditionally been a different group of people than those wrangling the servers, this doesn’t mean that sysadmins haven’t had to learn their fair share of networking. Virtualization platforms, for example, have offered increasingly sophisticated networking capabilities. Because virtual networks are, by nature, technically existing on a server instead of a physical switch, they have been traditionally the province of the systems administrators (not network administrators).
Today’s workloads can exist on physical servers, inside virtual machines, within containers, or on a vendor-supplied appliance. Workloads can be on-premises, located on a service provider’s network, or be spun up in the public cloud.
Somehow, someway, someone also has to take charge of the increasing number of things that aren’t part of the physical networking infrastructure, but also don’t live on a server. Printers, lightbulbs, and entire armies of mobile phones are just the beginning of the gifts that the Internet of Things (IoT) keeps on giving. Sensors are popping up everywhere, and previously air-gapped or otherwise isolated systems — some of which control millions of dollars of equipment and may not even be able to be patched — all have to be taken care of.
Today’s organizations are undergoing a digital transformation, with that term itself something of a conceit. “Digital transformation” has never really stopped, but the marketing buzzword is seeing a resurgence today. The reason why “digital transformation” is back on everyone’s tongue, however, is at the very core of why network automation matters: because much of what’s getting chucked onto today’s networks is insecure, unsecurable, and utterly unknown to the systems and network administrators tasked with managing it.
The short answer to “how does network automating physical networks help admins” is that the IT requirements of today’s organizations are growing so fast that sysadmins simply must automate everything in sight just to survive. None of the automation done in other parts of IT stack matters much if there’s a huge bottleneck at the network layer that requires actual humans to implement or review every change. That might have been fine 20 years ago, but today it’s a nightmare and a half.
Breaking Down Walls
Against this backdrop, consider that in most organizations there exist (at least) two different types of networks: virtual and physical. These networks are managed by two different groups of people. In some cases, rivalry between the two groups exist, and naturally this can lead to problems.
Network automation is the perfect opportunity to break down some of the walls between the different groups within IT, in the same way that DevOps and related approaches can help to break down the barriers between operations teams and developers.
At a very high level, DevOps has become a practice wherein operations teams set up automated infrastructure for dev teams; that automated infrastructure has various guard rails and the developers roam free within those confines. Ops teams put a lot of effort into their environments, creating templates and images, building in monitoring and reporting and more, but the practical and pragmatic end of the DevOps approach to IT has a lot to do with self-service IT, all in a quest for “agility.”
Self-service, however, doesn’t mean “without limits”, which is where the guard rails come into play. The ops teams might, for example, say that a particular dev account has the right to use 100TiB of class C storage, 20TiB of class B storage, and 5TiB of class A storage, along with 300 vCPUs and 1TiB of RAM. The cloud software in use will let devs cut that up and allocate it however they want, but they can’t surpass their limits.
DevOps is systems administration via profiles and policies, with the aid of software which automates and orchestrates infrastructure. This is not so different from network automation.
On the face of it, network automation is about making networks more robust, resilient, and scalable. Take a bucket of water into the data center, pour it on a switch, and watch the network reconverge to bypass the drowned switch. Need to add 1,000 switches to a software-defined network (shortly before you’re confronted with prejudice by security staff)? No problem. Plug them in and let automated provisioning and configuration sort ’em out.
However, beyond the basics of “making physical network bits talk to other physical network bits” software-defined networking allows network admins to grant a significant amount of freedom to systems admins, also with guard rails. The fundamental adaptability of software-defined networks, for example, mean that network admins don’t have to oversee the addition of new switches or servers to the network. When new equipment is needed, it is simply added, and the automation tools take care of making sure it’s properly configured.
Similarly, capabilities such as policy-based routing, VXLAN routing, VXLAN virtualization integration, and QinQ/hybrid cloud interconnectivity allow network administrators to build guard rails that prevent systems administrators from stepping out of bounds or breaking anything outside of their domain. Software-defined networking allows network administrators to not only use traditional tools like ACLs to build guard rails, it also allows the physical network layer to participate in the virtual networks used by virtualization platforms and cloud providers.
This interconnectivity allows network administrators to build the network functions, defenses, and cross-site links that make sense for the network as a whole. It also means that the creation of these tools can be put in the hands of the experts “the network administrators” instead of the already overburdened systems administrators.
Systems administrators thus become consumers of network resources in the same way that developers are consumers of operations resources. They can provision what they need, when they need it, but if they want to do anything truly strange, a conversation with the experts will be required.
Learning to Automate Together Network automation thus has multiple real-world benefits for systems administrators, and the organizations they serve. It enables infrastructure automation, but in a manner which allows boundaries to be set.
Automation makes IT teams as a whole more responsive, but it also gives systems administrators the experience of being consumers of resources managed by another group within IT. This can help systems administrators better relate to those who consume their resources (for example, developers), which may help bring all the various groups within IT together.
