The Crown S5 review?

Eeeeh I'm still not sure where it ranks for me. For me, the seasons are probably--

Season 2

Season 1

Season 4

and then the last two spots belong to 3 and 5 but I'm not sure what order they're in. It's not a bad season of TV, but it's not up to par for The Crown and I'm not sure why, entirely. Because it had moments, but those moments were not consistent. Frankly, I think they pulled a lot of punches this season, where season 4 was nothing but punch after punch--and I don't get that. Like, why make a season as inflammatory as season 4 was, and then get scared after people react to that...?

Anyway, here are semi-organized thoughts

I Liked:

Elizabeth Debicki's Performance. Though I think Emma Corrin was a perfect 80s-era Diana, Elizabeth was perfectly cast for 90s era Diana. She had the accent down, the mannerisms (looking up from underneath her lashes, the head tilts, the wry smirks), Diana's snarky delivery and sorrow mixed with frustration and yes, vengefulness, along with the sense that she's kind of a good time girl who wants to have fun? One facet of Diana that people overlook is that she was a Sloane Ranger before she married; she married very young; and I found that a couple of the things the show pointed out about Diana (her codependence with her children despite her being a great mom, plus her desire to get out and be a bit messy in her 30s) are very common among women who get into bad marriages and have kids quite young. They experience the shit most of us do in our twenties like a decade later. I thought it was very authentic, and far, far, far better than whatever little girl lost routine Spencer had going on. Basically, the Emma to Elizabeth pipeline gives me Diana perfection.

The Fayeds. The Fayed episode was one of my favorites of the season? The acting was good, the pathos were great, I loved the way you could see Diana genuinely getting along with Mohamed. Plus, that episode had the flashback return of David, and that actor is just... great lol.

Diana and Hasnat Khan. Hasnat Khan is a figure that I think is really hard to fictionalize, but the actors had good chemistry and I really liked that soft little love arc. Even if lol it's gonna lead to one of my complaints.

Diana Being Petty. I'm so tired of victim complex Diana portrayals. Diana had fire and wit and she did go after the royals at points. By no means do I think she wanted the monarchy done for (she wanted the throne for William). But the individuals? Oh, she wanted them annihilated lol. Best scene of the season was her dialing no over and over.

What I Didn't Like:

So Much Miscasting. Look man, anyone who followed up Josh O'Connor giving like... an actual career-defining performance as Charles was gonna have a hard time. Dominic is not a bad actor. But he's not it for Charles, and he knew it. He and Elizabeth lacked chemistry, which took a lot of the tension out of their marriage story scene at the season's end--compare that to Josh and Emma's fight. Josh and Emma had chemistry. It made Charles and Diana's issues even more tragic.

Imelda was also miscast, OR maybe she could've done better with a better script, but like... It just wasn't working. She's a good actress, and the truth is that Liz has had less and less to do after her great personal crisis (her marital issues with Philip) settled in season 2. But like as the season went on I kept waiting for Imelda to inject more into the role, and it didn't happen? And again, I don't wanna blame her, because the writing was just--trying to give her something and giving her very little. But things like Dominic and Imelda both skipping the Windsor accent that everyone else nailed in previous seasons was just weird to me.

Jonathan Pryce I feel was less miscast, but again he had little to do that made sense or mattered; Lesley is a great actress but they gave her like, nothing? And Margaret had shit happening lmao. She had kids to raise, her health was failing (by the end of the season Margaret will be dead in less than 10 years). I get why they did a Peter Townsend retrospective episode, but it was weird to me that that was alll they did for her, and Margaret and Elizabeth's confrontation felt so hollow.

Wasted Time. The pacing and time allocation for this season was SO WEIRD. Look, let's be real fucking honest here. What people wanted from this season of The Crown was the War of the Waleses. They advertised that. It's what we were all looking forward to. And there was really? Relatively little of that. There could've been other family dramas to get into, but they obviously didn't want to (Andrew and Fergie, Anne's divorce). And I think PM knew the War of the Waleses was the big show, and he got scared and swerved at the last minute. It was.... a choice.

And the thing is? Not anything nearly as interesting was happening for anyone else all season. So we got like, Philip palling around with his ambiguous lady friend which caused marital issues that I don't think Philip and Liz had at that point lmao. And they just kinda settled on sorta being discontented in their marriage? Which was weird because elsewhere in the season he was very ride or die defensive of her, and frankly they've seemed comfortable since season 2's end.

We had a whole episode dedicated to THE PRINCE'S TRUST LOL. And like.... yeah, Tampongate, but Tampongate was mostly used to be like "oh look, middle-aged people in love", which has always been the royals' attempts to downplay that lol. And it's like... no it's still pretty weird and he was pretty married, y'all. Having PRINCESS ANNE be like "I think that was rather noble and cool" like lol??? ANNE????? It was just weird, man. And The Prince's Trust is cool for a one off subplot, but to be the backbone of a whole episode???

Then you had shit really rushed and shuffled about at points--the Hasnat Khan subplot just flickered away, the Fayeds were introduced in ep 3 and didn't come back until ep 10.

Toothlessness. Look, PM is not anti-monarchy at all lol. But last season, there was an element of like... scathing cynicism towards the family and the institution, and that by and large was missing here. Except for in some Diana scenes, the Fayeds' complicated relationship with British shit in general, etc. That was really pretty missing here. Charles is progressing it, Camilla is suddenly ready to step up lmao, they're just a family!!! And like.... Not just s4, but all of the previous seasons had a sense of doom about it all that just wasn't here. It felt like the abuses of the family were just sort of washed away.

Which leads to...

Inconsistent Characterization. Some of this may have come from the recasting, but I don't think so? There was an adjustment in s3, but this was different. Charles ended season 4 as this like, borderline monster who's got a terrible relationship with his parents and is really pretty spineless. Suddenly, with very little explanation, he has a spine and is like, actively maneuvering to get rid of his mom and REVOLUTIONIZE THE MONARCHY LOL. Listen man, I'm not saying Charles hasn't had some successful power plays, but uh... they happened pretty recently. His mom being at death's door is what gave him that opportunity. He wasn't there in the 90s. He did not have the capital and Philip was guard dogging her.

As mentioned before, suddenly Philip and Liz are on the rocks again to give them something to do... Anne is suddenly like Team Charles lol. Elizabeth lost a lot of her coolness, and we really like... we know it's a hard time but we don't really see her have that hard time.

And it's not just people who were recast at risk here--John Majors begins the season weirded out by these freaks and at the end is like IT WAS AN HONOR AND PRIVILEGE and I have no idea why lmao. Because he mediated the divorce? Why??? A waste of Jonny Lee Miller, tbh.

And then there was just shit I didn't totally get. Like the Romanov episode. How was that the most graphic Romanov execution I've ever seen? How was that meant to indict the Windsors but then whoops never mind?

So yeah, there were like... moments? But I walked away from it feeling like they came so close to hitting the target and veered at the last minute. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it and it did feel very different from the previous seasons. I never got that feeling that I was watching The Crown, a show where you get the "DUNNNUNNNNUNNUNUN" music over someone like, mournfully sipping tea and looking out a window, and you go "my god, this is CINEMA". They never earned that lol.

The Main six and their first date with you

Asra:

You were sitting on the couch reading a book when a familiar little snaky body slithered around your leg. She had a small ribbon tied around her head and a tiny scroll tied into the bow. You smiled at her twinkling voice saying, “for you!” as you gently freed the small paper. Written in elegant cursive and deep purplish ink was a formal invite asking you on a date and whether you’d be free this afternoon. You chuckled knowing Asra was fully aware of your schedule since you lived together. Looking closer, you noticed a little arrow at the bottom of the page guiding you to flip it over and in small print, it said to look behind the counter. There, waiting for you, was a small box wrapped in blush pink paper. When you picked it up, another note laid beneath it and told you to look somewhere else. For the next few minutes, you wandered around the shop collecting small gift boxes Asra had left for you around your home. The last note led you back to your bedroom where it contained instructions to dress light and wear a swimsuit. When you finished dressing, Asra was waiting by the door, your favorite flowers in one hand and a basket in another. Asra took you to a realm you’d never seen before; everything was tinted in a myriad of purple, blue and pink hues. Asra set the basket down by the water and suggested you both go for a swim. As you revealed your bathing suit, they looked away with an embarrassed flush. You teased them about it before a mischievous grin broke across their face and they picked you up and jumped into the water where you both splashed around for a while. Drying off, you chatted  and enjoyed your lunch. At the end of the date, you gave Asra a kiss as thank you and they nuzzled their face into the crook of your neck, a goofy grin on their face.

Julian:

Julian originally thought about taking you to the Rowdy Raven but, knowing how he gets, realized that that’d make for a terrible date. On a day he knew you wouldn’t be busy, he made up an excuse about having to go to the clinic, but instead went to the marketplace to pick up flowers and food for later. Towards the evening, you were startled by a shrill squawking and saw Malak scratching at the window. Letting him in, you saw a note tied to his leg. When you read it, you couldn’t help smiling. Getting dressed, you made your way to the harbor where Julian waited on the dock by a boat he rented out for the night. He helped you in and rowed you both away from shore and towards the middle of the water. He handed you a bouquet of your favorite flowers and pulled out a small unfamiliar string instrument. You guessed it was something he came across during one of his many adventures. With only a few incorrect string plucks, he serenaded you and you clapped when the performance was over. He took a few exaggerated bows and you placed one of the flowers in his mouth with a laugh. When you asked him if you’d both be going back home to eat, he waggled his eyebrows with a chuckle and produced a large wooden board. Opening another bag, he placed an assortment of foods he bought earlier at the marketplace to enjoy together under the moonlight. When you were both done, he rowed you both back to shore where you shared a kiss before leaving. Back home, you curled up together on the couch by a warm fire to chat about the day and Julian’s skillful date planning.

Muriel:

Muriel  wracked his brain for a long time trying to figure out what special thing he could do for you. When he continued to come up empty, he decided to ask Asra for assistance. He explained his intention to organize a first date and Asra’s advice was to do whatever he thought would be special and intimate for both of you. With that, he came up with an idea. You came by Muriel’s hut one afternoon, expecting to see the man busy working, but no one was around. All his usual chores were finished, including feeding the chickens. You were a bit confused but brightened immediately when Inanna bounded up to you. Tail wagging excitedly, she turned her head and barked towards the forest. You pieced together that she wanted you to follow so you chased her until you came upon a clearing with a small brook and Muriel sitting aside it, waiting. He blushed and thanked you for coming and then quickly stuttered that this was a date. You smiled in reply, touched by how much he was trying. He gestured to a log and you both sat down. He produced a basket with food he’d made and two wood blocks and knives. He said he knew how much you wanted to learn how to whittle so he thought today might be a good time to try. Lunch was first and then followed the whittling lesson. After practicing for a long while, you both laid down on the grass and fell asleep in each other’s arms with Inanna wedged in the middle.

Nadia:

Nadia liked expressions of love but she’s usually not as flashy of a person as Lucio. Since palace duties took up so much of her time, you both rarely managed to see each other during the day. Sometimes, you both found time to chat at night, but it didn’t last long since she’s already tired. When there was finally a lull in work, Nadia took an uncharacteristic move. Over lunch, she told you that she wanted to take you on a date, however, this wouldn’t be any old date. You and Nadia were going to have a week-long date trip back to Prakra. You were shocked and stammered that she had too many important duties to take so much time off for you. Dismissing the comment with a wave of her hand, she said she couldn’t wait to go on the excursion. As big and exciting as this was, Nadia admitted that this trip had dual purpose. Yes, of course it was to spend quality time with you, but she wouldn’t be completely honest if it wasn’t due to some homesickness as well. She felt guilty for being a little selfish, but you assured her that you understood and were still excited to go. After a few days of preparation, both of you made the trip back home to meet her family and experience Prakran culture. You had a pleasant time seeing the sights and hearing about Nadia and her siblings’ childhood.

Portia:

While at her house one afternoon, Portia randomly decided that she wanted to take you on a date but was stumped as to what to do. She made it clear that she didn’t want to do anything work-related since she spends so much time at the palace already. You laughed and agreed, sitting down to think about it with her. You both usually chatted together in-between Portia’s work hours and then occasionally spent time with her at her house. Now that she was free, it was difficult figuring out something to do. Suddenly, she gasped in delight and asked if you’d like to go dancing. You asked her where and she replied, ‘the place with the best live music in town: the Rowdy Raven.’ You weren’t sure about the idea at first, a little embarrassed at the thought of dancing in the crowded tavern, but now that the idea was in her head, it was too late, and she was already dragging you there. A little shy at first, you slowly lightened up, dancing and singing with Portia well into the night. When it had gotten late, you both left the Rowdy Raven, giggly and light, deciding to spend the rest of the evening on your shop roof overlooking the city and the palace’s glittering lights in the night sky.

Lucio:

You had recently returned from a mission and were happy to spend time sleeping and relaxing at the palace. This morning, a servant knocked on the door to wake you. Groggily, you gave them permission to enter and they announced that you’d be going on a date with Lucio today. You vaguely remembered him asking if you’d like to go on a date sometime and you said yes but didn’t think he meant the next day. The servant presented a luxurious basket of sweet-smelling bath and hair products and before they left, they said Lucio was expecting you as early as possible. In the basket was a card that said, ‘only the best for the love of my life.’ Rolling your eyes with a smile, you washed up. When you were done with the shower, a servant came in and left some excessively elegant clothing on the bed, so you picked the one that suited your tastes. When you stepped outside, there was a row of servants leading down the hall each holding your favorite flower. Melchior and Mercedes padded up to you each with one in their mouths as well. You collected all the flowers until you arrived at a plush carriage outside the palace doors and Lucio standing in front, nervously holding a large bouquet in his hands. He offered them to you, and you kissed him on the cheek as thank you. Blushing, he opened the carriage door and helped you inside. The date consisted of a carriage ride through Vesuvia with an assortment of hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats. Lucio insisted on feeding you, relishing in the ability to tend to you and please you. The carriage ride stopped overlooking a cliffside where a table for two had been set up. You both spent the evening eating and chatting until night. On the carriage ride back, you leaned against Lucio sleepily and he buried his face in your hair with a contented smile.

Why did you decided to stop talking about politics? It's the most interesting part about your blog.

The most interesting part about my blog isn’t politics… it’s never been a focus.

I see this might be a little confusing, so allow me a backstory.

When I started White Whites Will Never Know, the goal of that blog was to focus on justice for Black people. If there are other things I see wrong within the racial boundaries, then I talk about that as well. And I did this all underneath an anonymous name. But as time goes on, I just drop the anonymous part and extended into other things, like being personal and showing different tastes in art, music, videos and such.

Politics started coming into play when I realized that you can’t just talk about race, you have to tell people how they can change it and that got me into that. Let me tell you… I was into it NOT because I want to be, but because I HAVE to be. Everyone got their views, opinions and so on, but if you’re not politically active, you are living by default and living by default is something White people can do, but Black people can’t. So, I made it a point.

I made mistakes in talking about it, but eventually, I managed to carve out something… or so I thought.

I’m not saying it’s bad to be involved in politics. It’s just that being involved in it and trying to change the hearts and minds of people is REALLY, REALLY hard. It’s time consuming, you have to be just balanced enough to listen to people, only to reconfirmed things, no matter how inexcusable you or they seem to be.

If you paid attention to any media, you’ll realize it’s a never ending battle for the truth. Not “my truth”, not “your truth”, not “this group truth”, just the truth. It’s being consistent with your points... sometimes for years, only for it to become undone simply because you made a mistake. Or that you made tons of mistakes, and still get rewarded for those things.

And when you spend hours, days, and weeks doing this, you have to ask yourself what is important. What’s important to me is educating people within the fields that I DO know about.

How many people know that I’m a musician? A rapper? A poet? A tech guy? A lover of the arts? Not a lot of people. There’s someone I know who only discovered that I’m a poet, though I published the poem literally 7 years ago. There’s people who sorta knew that I was a rapper, but never saw me perform. There are people who knew I know a lot about the Internet, but I barely talk about it. And some people know that I’m a graphic designer... but when was the last project that reflected that?

In the meantime, I get offers for a career that I don’t really enjoy. I don’t like talking about politics all the time. I don’t want to be yet another talking head. I wasted the last couple of years talking about a man that I truly never really liked at all in life, covering one election, talking about the math and why third party voting won’t work, only for it to be overlooked, or debated to a fault. Nothing changes.

This election is pretty much going to be a repeat of the last election, with no one seeing the irony. I know enough to know that the majority of Americans have short memories, that we are all too much used to the normalization of Trump’s behaviors, and that the Democratic Party may or may not win and IF they win, would things really change?

So, I’m tired of things I can no longer control. You know what I could control? My original projects. And I rather give time to things I love than the things I don’t even like.

But you know what kept me going? 25K+ followers.

But as Tumblr changed, that number is kinda... sad. 25K+ followers means nothing now. It used to before Tumblr changed their content policy. But now, I’m lucky to go viral based on something I love vs. something I hate. 

Most people know of my because of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, talking about Black LGBT+, Black women, Blackness in general... and those topics shine the most. Net Neutrality and other Internet related items are also my favorite topics.

But now look at the content I talk about? It’s less about that and more about cheap Trump jokes and overlooking things. I didn’t talk about the encryption act, nor the music copyrights, or even the latest music items I loved from Black people. Just a bunch of throwaways and the Covid-19 stuff... which IS important to cover, but in addition, not as a main topic.

I only seem to engage at least... let’s say maybe 200 at a time. I rather write for 200 people and have that content grow than 25K followers and keep getting hits, misses or nothing at all.

So, I’m going back to what I used to do. I don’t care if it goes viral or not. I rather talk about Linux and how Black people can make it something they use, or how Signal is important to the Black community when it comes to protecting themselves, or even how COVID-19 is exposing the vulnerabilities of American Black people than to talk about 2 old White men, back on top, debating about issues that will once again get overlooked...

... so yeah...

... let me get back to what I love. I wasted my years on direct politics.

Colors (Part 6)

Summary: Everyone knows when you meet your soulmate, the world is supposed to fill with color for the both of you. Unfortunately for Roman Patrick, that is not always the case.

A/N: Look! I finally did it! It took me forever and a day but I DID IT. Anyway, I had a bumpy couple of weeks which kind of put this on hold but I am very excited!

It felt a little easier for Roman to breathe now that he had someone that he was able to talk to someone about what was going on with his life. When he had told Patton, the older boy had cried with him and held him tight while assuring him it was going to work out just fine. Patton had also shown up the next day with two dozen cookies for him with the excuse that he had months to make up for - each decorated with a different color as a way to try and celebrate the whole devastating experience.

Logan was doing research, finding out if it was possible for someone to ignore that immediate bond with their soulmate. For weeks of searching, he hadn’t found anything giving a definitive answer on either side of the argument. Which was both a little disheartening and incredibly encouraging. Plus, it was nice for Roman to be reminded how much his brother cared, even if it was in his own way.

Virgil… Virgil was warming up.

Roman wasn’t sure how else to put it. They talked in class now, they left together, they spent more time in the library and at rehearsals - Roman found himself extremely glad that his lilac-haired friend had decided to stay on the crew backstage, even if at times he served as more of a distraction for Roman than the usual member of the crew. Virgil seemed more comfortable with him, seemed more relaxed, and he smiled.

That smile could light up the whole world, Roman was sure of it, even with how rare it came. Always in private, always quickly hidden with his hand, but still it was practically burned into Roman’s memory and fueled his dreams of their future together.

The production was moving closer, Hell Week had begun, and it felt like Roman never left the school these days. He was in class or he was on the stage or he was doing homework by the light of the stage manager’s podium with Virgil hanging over his back and peaking at his answers (Logan would scold him for allowing it, but Roman was too weak to deny him). It was consistent and it was nice, but it was exhausting. The closer they got to the end of the week, the more it could be seen on their faces and in their attitudes. Spending months on ends with people could be grating enough, but toss in exhaustion and people started to get more harsh than on average.

Roman should’ve noticed his own annoyance rising towards the end of the week, taken a break and separated from his peers long enough to get a couple of minutes to himself when he started to feel a little snappy at the little things. Someone took too long to change the set, someone was talking too loud in the audience, someone had taken his favorite pen. It was too easy to set him off with the week coming to an end and the final straw, unluckily, had been over something that Roman would’ve overlooked on any other day.

Friday afternoon was leading up to one last rehearsal before Roman was released from the chains of his role for two days before the week of performances. Now, Roman loved the theatre and he loved the role he was given and he loved being able to put on a show for the audience, but he was exhausted. He just wanted a short nap before he had to be ready to run the show twice through tonight.

It was going swimmingly, absolutely divine in the dark of the workshop bay that held furniture used in old productions in the short time between the bell and the beginning of rehearsals. All Roman wanted was thirty minutes of undisturbed quiet so that he was at the top of his game and ready to go. But, he didn’t get even five minutes before someone came crashing in.

The lights went up and somewhere in the workshop he could hear someone quite literally crashing up against something. Roman groaned in frustration and shot up from the couch he was laying on to go and find the commotion, ready to attack whoever decided to disturb his slumber.

“You must be new, here! In the time before our rehearsal, the lights here stay off so that the talent -” Roman threw his hands up dramatically as he weaved through the discarded set pieces “- may put on the best performance possible. Now, if would kindly retreat much more quietly than you came and turn off the lights as you go, it would very much be appreciated and I wouldn’t have to att--.”

Roman cut himself off as he drew closer to the source of the crash. A couple of props had been knocked over by someone who now seemed to be crouched on the floor behind one of the pieces. Their shoulders were shaking from what Roman could see and he could hear their breathe going in and out harshly as if they were hyperventilating. He rounded the corner slowly, barely keeping himself from approaching even faster when he noticed the plaid patches on the jacket being squeezed tightly around the form on the floor. “Virgil?” He asked, voice quiet as he kneeled to be eye level with him.

Virgil’s head shot up, his signature dark makeup streaking down his cheeks, and Roman was sure that if the other’s back wasn’t already pressed against a prop, he would’ve forced himself further back. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” he muttered, hands coming up to pull at the purple strands with pale fingers. “I didn’t - I didn’t - I didn’t mean to… I didn’t think anyone was going to be in here, no one is ever in here. I’m sorry.”

“Hey, Hey, no, it’s okay, I’m not mad at you,” Roman assured him. “I wouldn’t have come out like that if I had known it was you. It’s me who’s sorry.” Virgil shook his head and sucked in another harsh breath. “No, no, no, I don’t. Fuck. I’m sorry,” he repeated as he pulled his hair even tighter in his hands. Roman found his hands drifting up, wanted to grab his hands and hold him and help him, but a flinch  from the other boy kept him from going any further. “Don’t touch me! Don’t... I can’t- Fuck. I can’t fucking breathe.”

Virgil seemed to choke on a sob and Roman felt absolutely lost on how to help his soulmate through this. He racked his brain for something, anything he could do to help Virgil through it. “Hey,” Roman whispered, remembering a discussion they’d had in his psychology class last semester. “Can you… Can you put your hand on my chest and breathe with me for a minute?” Virgil gave him an incredulous look. “I mean just put your hand here -” he placed a hand on his own chest “- and when my chest goes up, breathe in, and when it goes down, breathe out.”

The panicking boy hesitated a moment but inevitably removed a shaking hand from his hair and put it on Roman’s firm chest. It took some time, but, soon, Virgil’s breathing slowed to a normal pace and the hand on his chest relaxed. With the moment passed, Roman allowed himself to notice the way his skin seemed to burn under his soulmate’s touch. It didn’t last long though for as soon as the tension had completely left Virgil’s body, he was pulling away and wiping at the streaks of eyeshadow on his cheek.

“Jesus Christ, this is embarrassing,” he grumbled with his hands over his face while he scrubbed away what was left of the makeup. “Sorry for your screwing up your beauty rest, Princey.”

Roman grimaced and moved so that he was sitting criss-cross in front of rather than kneeling. Yesterday I have probably watched this movie for the third or fourth time, and I still love it.

3. La La Land (2016) IMDB: 8.0

La La Land is a cinematic marvel. It's nostalgia, meticulousness and joy captured my heart and earned itself the title of one of the best musicals of all time. Almost every aspect of La La Land is close to perfect making this not only one of the best movies in recent history but also one of the best looking films and a very memorable cinematic experience. The cinematography is lively with phenomenal long takes, different location and gorgeous colours thanks to the production design. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone make a wonderful musical duo with serious chemistry as if the roles were made for them. The music feels alive at any moment and the sound track is definitely consistent. After Whiplash, the stakes were high for Damien Chazelle and La La Land undoubtedly lands him a spot on Hollywood's best directors. Pulling of two films of the same genre and making both of them seem unique and originally is no easy thing to do and writing a film can be agonising so Damien Chazelle deserves all the praise he's getting. La La Land is a genre defying masterpiece which I would recommend to anyone a fan of musicals or not. It's colourful joyfulness is a sight to see.

4. Annie Hall (1977) IMDB: 8.0

Woody Allen's masterpiece will always be "Annie Hall." What is most remarkable today about this film is the way Allen presents it. It's a movie about a relationship. But rather than taking a linear approach, Allen plays with time. We see the middle, the begining, and the end. And not always in that order. Allen also breaks the fourth wall a lot and has many dream sequences and asides which add to the complexity of the characters. This is a highly autobiographical film and Allen pulls no punches. This movie is not about romance in the way that "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is. Rather, "Annie Hall" is a deconstruction of a romance. At times it is funny and heartbreaking and always classic. "Love fades," indeed.

5. Silver Linings Playbook (2012) IMDB : 7.7

While most romantic comedies usually contain bad acting, sappiness, and a large amount of predictable moments; Silver Linings Playbook is the exact opposite. There may be a little amount sappiness in this movie but there is bound to be some in any romantic situations. In reality though, all of the sap in Silver Linings Playbook can be overlooked due to the fact that the film is completely original, extremely funny, and contains outstanding acting from the two lead roles. Written and directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter), Silver Linings Playbook is about a man, played by Bradley Cooper (Limitless, The Hangover), who was just released from an eight month stint in a psychiatric hospital. He wants to get his life back on track but is being held back by his parents and his unstable condition. After a little while, he strikes up an interesting friendship with a female played by Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone, The Hunger Games). Both of these characters are going through somewhat of the same type of problems which makes their friendship even more quirky and thought-provoking.

Administrative Virtual Professionals

One of the keys to scaling is to remove yourself from the administrative activities of your business and to focus your time on growing your company. Having a VP tackle operations and administrative outcomes for you can go far beyond what a traditional assistant does, like answering phones and keeping your calendar. There are many more ways a VP can help you administratively. Here are some concrete examples of my favorite things administrative VPs do for our clients.

Lead Management

Figure 18, from early 2018, shows what MyOutDesk has in place so that sales and marketing can know how we have handled a hotline, a web chat, or an email campaign lead coming into our CRM.

When someone comes to MyOutDesk who is interested in working with us, we have a script and a completely outlined lead process in hand. While all salespeople need to embrace those standard operating procedures, they don’t necessarily need to be the ones who own those documents; you could have an administrative VP who acts as that owner and keeper of these very important procedures and process. You will be amazed at how having someone to do this will keep you from getting bogged down with the sales side of your business.

Lead Reporting

One opportunity many business owners overlook is taking advantage of all the reporting and business analytics virtual professionals can provide. Here is a report prepared for one of our clients. In it, you can see a lot of information: where revenue came from during this reporting period, how many deals were closed, what expenses there were, and what conversion rates looked like. Numbers like these can be prepared for you so you can know where to best spend your marketing dollars and how you can be most effective in closing deals. (See figure 19.)

Net Promoter Scores

Another thing your VPs can do for you is to keep track of net promoter scores. Whenever we have asked clients, “How likely are you to refer col- leagues and friends to our service?” and the answer is “Very likely,” or, “Not likely,” we know that those who say “not likely” are clients we need to focus on. They are, in a way, raising their hands and saying, “Hey, we are not 100 percent happy,” and finding out why yields useful informa- tion. A VP can track both the “likely” responders and the “unlikely,” over time, to see if the same issues keep coming up and to report back to you about how more customers can become likely to give you a referral. Many companies don’t have a quality score around their service or product, and having an administrative professional to survey clients, employees, and vendors is a great way to get feedback you can use to implement long- term structural changes.

Recruitment

I’m an employer, and we have thousands of folks who work for MyOutDesk. I know from experience that sorting through all the applications we get is a big challenge and not necessarily the best use of my time as an entrepre- neur. We have had years when we had over thirty thousand applicants for only five hundred jobs. As you would imagine, the process of narrowing the field to the two thousand or so viable candidates we would want to interview is daunting. As a business owner, it is your job to interview and find talent, but posting jobs and screening the multitudes are not. This is something that an administrative professional can handle for you, when you give that person a clear idea of what your criteria are. This will save you time and energy while allowing you to focus on revenue-producing activities.

Agile Project Management

Agile project management is a great way to use your virtual administrative professionals. Following is an example of a spreadsheet that could repre- sent project management for anyone on your team. On the left side, you can score the importance of the task, starting at 1,000 and going down so that the highest tasks go to the top and the lowest go to the bottom. For each task, you can assign objectives, due dates, the person(s) who will handle it, documentation needed and completion dates. These can all be housed in one spot.

If you are running a big organization and you have as many events as MyOutDesk does (for example, we might have a birthday party this week, a client event next week, and a team-building event coming up next month). All the related details have to be tracked as a project. There are the flights, the hotels, the venue details and schedules…and all of this can be managed by VPs. Many of our clients and VPs use the Basecamp app to run complex, multifunctional projects. Some still use a simple Excel spreadsheet, like the one I share here. Others use a kind of software that is specific to project management. Whatever you use, you can give it to a virtual professional to run it for you.

Performance Reporting

Performance reporting is another role that virtual administrative pro- fessionals can assume. Here is an example from several years ago of our incoming leads, where they came from, and how many converted across different departments. A VP compiled that information and maintained it over time so we could have access to that data.

There are many different access points VPs can have for this kind of data. If you have a phone system, there is a back end for that phone sys- tem from which data can be pulled. If you have a CRM, there is a back end for that from which you can extract how many leads came in and what the activity looks like. If you have some sort of delivery software in which you are running projects, you can pull that data out of the back end. If you have financials, you can tie the operations of your business back to those financials. These are all examples of performance reporting. A VP will have to be given resources to do this; this person won’t be able to jump straight in and know how to do it. But once it is set up, and you have introduced the process, your VP will be able to maintain it for you and report back in a consistent format.

Customer Support

In chapter 3, I mentioned Chris, a VP at MyOutDesk who has been sup- porting our client Knolly William’s technology company. The technology is a CRM. A few years ago, Knolly hadn’t been sure what he was going to do with his tech company. He was going to either ditch it or move forward with it. It had an inexpensive price point, so there were a lot of potential users, and it was a recurring source of revenue for him. The problem was that he was tired of working on it himself as a business owner. I told him I could get him somebody to help.

That’s where Chris came in. He is the customer support touch point for all inquiries, sales, and operations. The only things he doesn’t handle are speaking engagements, writing about the CRM, and working with the tech people to maintain and develop the technology. Knolly does all of that. But Chris handles everything else, from onboarding to helping someone move his or her CRM from an old system. Chris feels like a partner to Knolly, and he loves his work. He is a great example of an administrative VP who has made a business come alive.

so, i’ve wanted to do this ever since i watched K!Junkies video of their top 15 favorite Beast/Highlight songs. tbh this is something that i sometimes do, picking my top 10-15 fave songs from each group i like and then compiling them to make a playlist. more often than not, though, i end up getting somewhat frustrated because i can’t make up my mind on which songs i have to include on the list l o l. but it’s good fun, and the list tends to change from time to time, depending on my mood, so yeah.

it really took me awhile to finish this list because, again, it is never an easy feat to have to choose only 15 songs. i mean, come on, beast/highlight have been amazingly consistent with their music and they have LOTS of awesome songs. so i decided to base my choices on my own personal attachment to the songs - whether they hold sentimental meanings to me, and so on. that said, it doesn’t mean that the songs not included here do not have any effect whatsoever on me, no. 

anyways. here goes my list, and it’s in no particular order, i guess?

1. 주먹을 꽉 쥐고 (Clenching A Tight Fist)

As far as i can remember, this was the first Beast song that i listened to. I can’t recall how i ended up listening to this song, though - it was around the time when i wasn’t into them yet and barely knew them, but i remember feeling impressed by their vocals. So yeah, naturally this song owns a special place in my heart for being my first Beast song ever. It’s just my kind of song, because boy am i a sucker for Beast ballad. Once, Doojoon also talked about how special this song was for him and, as shallow and silly as this sounds, it just made me grow fonder of this song :’)

2. 숨 (Breath)

This song is one of my favorite title tracks ever, hands down. Idk, it’s just.... epic? I love everything about it. The fast-paced, sort-of rock-ish, gritty instrumental, Dongwoon’s adlib at the beginning (that he gained after his Dad bribed the producer l m a o), Yangyo’s impressive long notes, the dance, the styling they’re sporting for this era, just.... everything, really. And this may not be a popular opinion, but I personally think that this era marked the beginning of their more... sophisticated sound and style? 

3. Fiction

Ask any B2uty/Light and they’d most likely tell you Fiction was the era (or one of the most significant, at least) for Beast/Highlight. And i just can’t agree more even though I actually joined the fandom just right when the promotion era for the song was ending. I know, what a bad timing, eh? I guess, what i’m trying to say is, I didn’t include Fiction on this list because it was such a massive hit back in the days, but because it’s the song that sealed the deal for me? Really, there’s no turning back for me after listening to their Fiction and Fact album. 

4. You

If I have to describe this song in one word, it’d be Dongwoon. I mean, don’t get me wrong. It is a beautiful song in its own right and all the other members sound so good (Doojoon’s part is still one of my ultimate favorite ever), but for me personally, Dongwoon owns this song. I was snatched from the moment he opens the song with his I’m gonna make you love me line. Yeah, I do love you, all right, so mission accomplished, magnae. l o l.

5. 비가 오는 날엔 (On Rainy Days)

On Rainy Days is one of the songs that I always seek for first whenever they hold a concert or perform in an event. I’m not sure why I love it so. Maybe because imo this song is just such a perfect representation of them? They’ve always been known as a vocally strong group that are especially good with ballad, and this song showcases it all? I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to and watched performances of this song for hundreds or even thousands times already, and yet I just can’t get tired of it, ever.

6. Midnight (별 헤는 밤)

Midnight is probably one of their finest songs to date. And it’s special to me because it’s the pre-release for It’s A Beautiful Night comeback, which was their first comeback after I became a fan. Every time I listen to it, it’s like I can relive the excitement I felt back then, and the feeling is just wonderful. I love the original version, but I also like the acoustic version that they did in some of their concerts.

And Doojoon’s part during the bridge is pure perfection. It still gets me every time, even after years. Ultimate favorite of all his parts in any songs, hands down ;-;

7. 니가 보고 싶어지면 (When I Miss You)

I fell in love with this song from the get go, and I think it’s easy to see why. It’s one of their slower songs and it’s beautiful in a bittersweet kind of way. And it’s also one of the songs that show just how much Dongwoon has improved over the years, as he shares the chorus with Yangyo ;-; He also harmonizes for Yangyo’s parts during the live perf of this song. And then there’s Doojoon part ;-; Anyone should know by now that I have such strong affinity for his voice l o l.

8. Good Luck

While I can’t say I loved everything about this song’s era (I wasn’t digging Dongwoon’s purple hair and Doojoon’s brown hair), but the song itself is so awesome I could overlook everything else. It’s so fierce and packed with energy and just... amazing. And i think the song also served as a reminder that yes, they are actually capable of doing some intense choreo - it’s just that most of the time they choose not to do so l o l

9. 12시 30분

If I had to choose the ultimate favorite of all my favorite songs, this is it. I’m not sure why I feel so emotionally attached to this song. Maybe it’s got to do with the fact that they released this song (and the mini album) as a commemoration of their debut 5th anniversary. Maybe it’s got to do with the fact that this is like everything i ever want of them. The concept is on point, the styling is on point. And the song and the dance are both challenging and yet they manage to make so effortlessly easy, belting out those notes while dancing gracefully. Idk, i just love it bunches ;-;

10. 가까이 (Stay)

As per Can You Feel It concerts, this song screams Doojoon through and through. Seriously, it’s legit the most he has ever sung in one single song! So of course I would have to put this song on the list here. But, to be fair, I’ve loved this song since I heard it the first time back then, though admittedly, yeah, it’s mostly because I thought Doojoon (and Dongwoon) sounds amazing. I can’t help ruing the fact that they never got to perform this song with Hyunseung, but it is what it is.

11. Stay Forever Young

Their one and only Japanese track to make it to the list. While I love their other Japanese songs, I have to say this is my ultimate favorite. I just love the vibe and the feel of it? And how it’s about life and being young, and it’s just like a reminiscent of the kind of song my favorite jpop group would sing, so yeah. 

12. 리본 (Ribbon)

I know not everyone is a fan of this song. Some found it too boring, even. But not me. Granted, it’s not the song that I’d always put on my playlist like every single time. But whenever I do listen to it, it overwhelms me with feels. I suppose it’s because it’s their first title track as 5-member Beast, and also their last as, well, Beast. So in a way, it represents both a new beginning and an end for them.

13. 아름답다 (It’s Still Beautiful)

God, if i ain’t choked with emotion the first time i listened to this song ;A; But could anyone blame me? This song was like solid proof of how these boys survived against all the odds, of how they’re still pretty much in it together, bringing music to their fans once more. I will never not feel things whenever I listen to this song ;-; And don’t even get me started on how beautiful it is, simple as it is. It shows that they don’t need much else because their vocals just shine.

14. 얼굴 찌푸리지 말아요 (Plz Don’t Be Sad)

I don’t think there could be a better, more fitting song for their comeback/re-branding as Highlight than this song. It just hit all the right notes. It’s fun, it appealed to the public, it showed their versatility in music while at the same time conveying their message for their fans: don’t be sad, be happy because we’re back to bless you with more music :’)

15. Sleep Tight

If anyone ever questions why Yangyo is their main vocal (though, seriously, why would anyone?), well, this song will tell you exactly why. He simply slays the song, all right, with his raspy voice that is so fitting for such a rock-ish kind of song. And it also proves, yet again, how their music is so versatile, that they can tackle almost everything: heartbreaking ballad, uptempo fun, rock, you name it,
