Had a cartoonishly bad morning that involved breaking into a frozen house...
So my parents and I went over to my grandfather’s house to find the deed so that he could sell it and move from rehab into assisted living. (Important to note that we were asked to do this and we had permission to be there and go inside). Immediately we see there’s icicles leaking out of the roof over the back door and the entire thing is iced over. The back door, of course, is the only door we have the spare key to. There’s no key at all for the (locked) front door and the (locked and hasn’t ever been used) side door. We try the back door, sliding over the icy puddle, with minimal success. This leads to my dad banging on it with a hammer and karate kicking it to remove the ice chunks, while I check the other two doors to find downed power lines and poison ivy blocking the rickety stairs to the side door and the front door just plain locked. Then I come back and my mom is suggesting we buy a hair dryer to melt the ice around the lock, but there’s no power outlet on the outside of the house. So after much stressing and debating about how to get in there, I end up frantically wedging a rusty lawnmower blade (why did nobody ever throw it out?) in the door jamb while my dad’s panicking and suggesting windows to smash in, because may I stress again nobody, not even my grandfather who owns the house, bothered to have a fucking key to the front door. With a bit of looney-tunes ingenuity with the lawnmower blade (thanks tetanus shot) and nearly falling on the ice trying to kick the door frame, the thing eventually opens. The lock turns out to be full of ice and not fully clicking.
Inside we see a massive puddle of water on the basement floor from a leak somewhere, and then go upstairs to find the kitchen tile floor is iced over, because it turns out the heat is fully broken and it’s sub-freezing in the house. After unsuccessfully fiddling with the thermostat, I go and search for the deed in the cabinet covered in dead bees (because of course there was a beehive in the wall last summer, why not) while my mother tries to work a space heater and my father checks upstairs. Upstairs, apparently, is the source of the problem where the shower’s been leaking and the entire tub and floor are Home Alone wet bandits-style flooded, leaking water through the rest of the house and then freezing.
I don’t have gloves and my hands are shaking as I sift through the “important paperwork” box to find… a roofing pamphlet and a bicycle registration from 1974. Meanwhile my father is running with buckets of water down the stairs from the tub and sloshing it around as he flings it out the front door. Then he tells my mom and I to leave because apparently the police are coming, so we flee to a parking lot somewhere with zero information why (after we’ve just broken into the house). Eventually my dad calls to explain that when he told my grandfather about the broken heating and water leak my grandfather apparently decided to call the police to check and fix it, but the police can’t do shit about that, so we’re across town while my father’s waiting in the freezing house dumping out buckets of water to see if they even show up.
And no, we never found the deed to the house.
#home alone ass plotline to my day#call me if you need to break into a house i guess#i only do structurally unsound houses built before 1900 tho#as tempted as i am to put this chaos in the ao3 endnotes later im keeping it here#but sorry for the later chapter update i'll start working on it soon

________
You wouldn’t say it outloud but you quickly got used to the feeling of waking up next to Jimin.
The first day was jarring. Eyes opening to tufts of hair tickling your face and body waking up to the feeling of your arms thrown around his body flushed to your front, his hand holding yours from where it hangs. There’s a rumbling warmth pulsing through your body in intervals starting from your fingertips and down to your toes.
You remembered waking up feeling new and rejuvenated, as if your body had been dismantled down to its atoms with all its flaws and aches only to be reformed into a new, better form.
Waking up next to Jimin is the closest thing to experiencing heaven on earth. It was quiet and euphoric, comfortably warm, and you loved every second of it. Dare say, its quickly becoming one of your favorite things in the world.
Soulbond strain, that’s what the doctor had said. That's what caused the constant fatigue you and Jimin were feeling yesterday which eventually caused you both to pass out from exhaustion. Due to how ill-informed they are of both your marks, they weren't aware of how fragile your new bond was and how much touching should be involved for the first few days.
So now, you are bound to Jimin for a long while. The doctors had hypothesized that you both will be able to withstand not holding for an hour soon when he had accidentally let go of your hands in favor of taking food from Taehyung’s hands.
You hope it goes past an hour when the week finally ends, a day if you’re both fortunate enough. Being forced to rest while everyone around you moved and worked is frustrating, even Jimin was growing antsy from all the sleeping, eating and sitting you both were doing.
Today marks the last day you both will be confined to the hospital as they've finally cleaned up one of the spare rooms in the dorm so you could move in.
You were so glad you could finally eat something more nutritious than bland soup. It would be a talent to be able to cook a soup so tasteless it would even make a white person frown despite the numerous vegetables and meat on them.
Since Jungkook's Birthday, you found yourself more often than not staring at the ceiling after eating, dreaming about eating other food so intensely it's like you could taste them in your buds. Jimin teased, saying you were growing insane from the lack of flavor.
A few days have passed since you found out you were soulmates with your best friends but you still couldn’t wrap your head around it.
The thought that these five—possibly seven depending on Seokjin and Hoseok’s test results later today—down to earth, aphrodite-blessed men with even more beautiful traits were tethered to you is bizarre. The idea never fails to short-circuit your brain every time you think about it.
And it's hard not to, not when you wake up sleeping next to the peaceful face of South Korea’s IT boy—with his arms wrapped around you and his head nuzzled under your chin.
It's something you’re still trying to get used to as you’ve never dared to sleep while cuddling with your friends, no matter how tired you might be. It was far too intimate of an act, reserved for those who are romantically involved and for someone with feelings as fickle as yours back then, it was inappropriate.
Not that it mattered much now but it's still difficult to be comfortable with the domesticity of it all.
What was once perceived as platonic now felt anything but.
Save for Taehyung and Seokjin, everyone else has continued working, although you had advised a weary looking Hoseok to take a break, he insisted that he's fine whilst practically dragging himself out of the room. Namjoon had assured you that he'll watch over his hyung but you had threatened Yoongi for extra measures.
Speaking of work, your friends have been blowing up your phone since Jungkook's birthday, asking why they were required to sign a whole different NDA and you told them about your soulmates.
All of them reacted positively, Minhyuk had even pleaded to hear about how you discovered and had asked to be informed of all the latest happenings, from the courting, dates, and even the bedroom—something you had promised to hit him for once you're back to work.
But for now, you were stuck with a foot out of the bathroom and body turned to the opposite with an arm stretched far out to hold Jimin's hand as he finished his business.
So far, there's been no accidental flashing, to which you've been thankful for. The whole ordeal is already awkward as it is with only having to hear each other pee.
Jimin couldn’t even jokingly flirt with you the whole time, far too mortified with the idea of both parties being able to hear the stream of piss to even bother coming up with jokes to lighten up the situation, nor could you dare look into his eyes after the first few times you both had to go through this. You had refrained from eating too much in fear of having to shit during the week but you knew it would eventually happen.
Especially since you both have been greenlit to eat take outs and Seokjin had generously offered to buy you both food—bless that wonderful, handsome man—and dragged Taehyung out with him.
You had been hesitant to make a few demands at first because do you even deserve the kindness Seokjin is showing you after hurting him for years? But the man proved himself devoted once more when he listed down the food you’ve been craving desperately for without hearing it from your lips.
(Tae had joked that maybe it's the soulmate mark manifesting a little late and Jimin elbowed him for that.)
You didn’t even get to tell him not to bother when he began to loudly chant gibberish as he pulled Taehyung out of the room with him.
After all the babying and princess treatment you've been receiving in the short time of knowing you were soulmates, it's hard not to feel frustrated having your best friends become your beck and call when they—save for Yoongi, bless that man for keeping his distance—hadn't been doing so for the past few years.
It was somewhat pressuring that you could ask Jungkook to brush his teeth and immediately drink orange juice and he'd do it without question, if not gargling the juice for a little while longer just because you asked him to do it.
From living alone and getting used to doing things by yourself, to suddenly having five people who'd follow your whims almost blindly, was overwhelming and slowly becoming more annoying than it is helpful.
If it wasn't for the guilt from getting irritated, you would've blown up on the first day when most of your soulmates had refused to let you stand up and walk around the room in fear of having you collapse.
Sure you had passed out from the soulbond strain but that same bond rendered you invulnerable to most things, I’m not about to die walking around the room with Jimin, Yoongs.
You couldn't fault Jungkook and Tae for wanting to baby you. Jungkook never had someone to pamper and spoil, and Taehyung only had Jungkook; Even then, it wasn't in a romantic way and Jungkook was also being taken care of by the others so he didn't need to do much. His ex and him didn't last long enough for when BTS’ fame had skyrocketed and he had more money than he could ever spend in his life and is quickly running out of things to spend it on.
Still, it was hard to take all the coddling. It was better when they treated you with the distance platonic relationships had granted you.
Today, you’re huddled next to Jimin as you both scrolled on social media with both your bare legs thrown over his.
There's been comments left on your instagram page asking for Jimin's health and you decided to reply to one comment to say that he's fine and recovering. You and him had been pardoned from work for a week, Taehyung had been granted some leniency and he used it to visit you both in the hospital once it was revealed that his soulmark had been affected by Jimins.
Silencing the app, you move to twitter when the door suddenly opens and in comes Seokjin holding up two plastic bags of takeout, flexing them as if they were golden medals and you sit up.
“Your handsome savior has arrived with fries and actually good food!”
“Hi noona!” Taehyung greets as he steps out of Jin's shadow.
“Jin you're actually the most good looking man I've ever seen in this forsaken planet, did you get me cheese and sour cream flav—”
“Of course I did,” He scoffed, putting down two paper bags and one drink carrier on your bedside table before placing the rest on the table near the bathroom door. “Who do you think I am?!”
“He almost ordered it all in cheese until I reminded him that you wanted sour cream too, noona.” Taehyung chimes in with a grin as he closes the door, a hand hidden behind his back while he holds a covered cup in the other.
Seokjin snapped his head towards him with an indignant ‘Ya!’, to which Tae only giggled at.
“You bought that heinous, god awful sweet tea with my money! How could you do this to me?!”
“I offered to pay but you—”
“WITH MY MONEY!”
Everyone only laughed and Jin trudged over with Jimin’s lunch in hand, offering it with an outreached arm and he took it. At least, he tried to. Jin suddenly raised his hand over his head. You watched as Jin continuously teased Jimin whose reach is limited due to the need to be holding your hand.
Jimin then finally got a grip on the plastic bag’s bottom and suddenly, their fishing game became a tug of war.
“Wait wait wait! You're going to tear it! It's going to spill!”
“Just fucking give it to me, hyung!” Jimin grunt, tugging one last time and the side of the bag rips, immediately Jin lets go.
“Why would you pull that hard?!”
Jimin ignored him in favor of pulling out his container, which he realized is overwhelmingly little compared to your three packages.
“Hyung!” He screams with his bottom lip jut out, dragging out the word. “How come I only have one food package? I'm also a patient, you know?!”
“You didn't request anything.” Jin says nonchalantly, shrugging.
“We've been together for years hyung! You should've known what I wanted like you did noona! This is blatant favoritism hyung!”
Seokjin ignored him, handing you a large bowl of mixed flavored fries, a large boba tea, and a plastic container where an aroma of caramelized fried chicken is leaking out of it the moment it leaves the paper bag. Next to you, Jimin scoffed, incredulous as he crossed his arms.
“She gets fried chicken, fries and boba but I only get Jajangmyeon?!”
Once again, he ignored the younger man, rolling his eyes as Taehyung bounds up to his disgruntled best friend to reveal the half occupied half empty paper beverage carrier hidden behind his back, grinning widely as Jimin’s face morphs into disbelieving betrayal.
“Wow, so this is how we do things now, huh? I can’t believe you’d do this to me when I’m a patient!”
“I’m so sorry, you poor poor thing.” Taehyung pouts as he offers out the food and Jimin spared no time in swiping the bag from him.
With their bicker finally coming to an end and Taehyung comfortably sitting crossed legs at the foot of you and Jimin’s bed, you turned to your food.
After eating nothing but bland, runny soup since the night at Jungkook’s birthday, tasting the cheddar almost made you tear up. You had taken advantage of the privilege of tasting far too long, being able to finally ingest something else felt euphoric, as if you were given the chance to walk through the garden of eden.
Exaggerated much but it's the only way you could explain the feeling.
Wasting no more time, you dug into the french fries bowl.
You hear Seokjin whisper something underneath his breath, sounding incredulous. You watched as he crossed over to Taehyung and snatched his cup, ignoring the younger man’s indignant yelp and took a sip.
Instantly, the mixed taste of cheddar and sour cream was washed away by the familiar taste of Taehyung’s heinous tea preference of illegal amounts of tea and milk. The harsh difference of the three flavors along with the texture of fries gliding on your tongue makes you gag. Your soulmates react, Jimin placing his food down to place his cupped hands under you as if trying to catch your puke while Tae flinches, about to reach over until he sees his brother already positioned to help you and turns to fetch you a glass of water instead.
“You ate too fast noona, try to chew it first.”
“You ate too fast noona, try to chew it first.” You mimic in a tone far too high to be his and Jimin rolled his eyes.
“Why are you being so annoying today?”
“I’m sorry I’m getting cranky after someone disrupted me eating—” Your words abruptly end as Jin suddenly surged in to hug you.
You look at Taehyung who’s staring longingly at his tea still in Jin’s grasp behind you before turning to a similarly perplexed Jimin mid-bite of his tteokbokki. Raising an eyebrow at him, he responds with a shrug before continuing to stuff food into his mouth.
But as you rested both hands on his shoulders, Jin suddenly sniffled.
“Jin?”
Alert, you gently push him off and your eyes meet with his misty pairs, matched with a teary smile stretching plush red lips. Your heart leapt to your throat as both his hands cupped your cheeks and kissed your forehead in under a second. But instead of getting a seizure or being struck with an overwhelming amount of pain, nothing happened.
Instead a warm feeling, akin to what the rest of your soulmates caused you, wrapped around you like a thick blanket and you froze.
Then, Jin stands with an excited yip and excused himself out of the room, leaving you and the others confused.
What?
You didn't need to look at Jimin or Tae to know they all had huge question marks hanging over their heads as they stared at where they last saw their hyung disappear out of the room.
Why didn't your body react from having someone kiss your forehead while your bonds were still unsettled? From what you've read, there's always a chance of it happening, yet even if your relationship with him stretched over years, there shouldn't be any reason why he's not causing you and Jimin pain.
Unless he's also a soulmate.
Immediately you were reminded of the time he had carried you and wondered why no one ever questioned why nothing fatal had happened when he had done that in the DFA. Even if it had everyone in a flurry of panic, someone should've noticed and questioned it right? Yoongi should have at least.
There was also that one time Hoseok had held your hand in the car, it was brief but it should've done something still with a Nexus bond as complicated and huge as yours. Yet like with Seokjin, nothing happened.
“What did I just watch?” Taehyung began and you wish you had the answer. “Did I just witness my soulmate get stolen by Seokjin hyung?”
“No,” Jimin says, eyes thoughtful as he looks at you before turning to the bathroom door. “I think we just discovered that hyung is also tethered to her.”
Both your head snapped to the man next to you.
In the small amount of time you stared at your soulmate, the pieces began to click as the cogs in your mind whirs with all the possibilities before it took you back to the moment the horrendous taste of Taehyung's tea violated your tongue. Your mouth falls into an ‘o’.
“Shared Tastebuds.” You mutter.
Jimin opens his mouth to ask you to elaborate when Seokjin reenters with a doctor following behind him, red faced but the blinding wide smile he wore was enough to make you forget he was crying not a second before. The doctor next to him looked ecstatic, eyes a little crazy at the newfound discovery.
“Congratulations, it seems that also Mr. Kim here is a part of your Nexus bond!” He says a little cheerily as he hugs the clipboard close to his chest. “It would do you all well to inform the rest of the group of this finding. From a professional standpoint, I do think that Mr. Jung has a huge chance of also being a part of your Nexus.”
To say you never had doubts that the other two members were a part of your nexus would be a lie, you had hoped they were but the absence of mark manifestation symptoms made it hard to believe they’ll be one of your soulmates.
Who knew all it took to find out if you and Jin were connected was eating while in the presence of each other? If you hadn’t fainted from the lack of food and the Soulbond strain, would you have found out about it earlier?
Was he the reason you’d taste the savory taste of a well-seasoned grilled meat or the sweet fizzling taste of a soda late at night yesterday?
Or is the bond you both have will allow for long distance sense sharing? There are two types of Shared Tastebuds after all.
“The results are due today right?” Jimin asks and the doctor turns to his watch.
“This afternoon I'm sure just before you both are discharged. But,” He turns to Jin. “For now I'll be taking Mr. Kim with me to register his soulbond and involvement in your Nexus.”
When they left again, the three of you remained unmoving, stunned.
It must be Jimin’s touch that had kept you calm throughout the revelation because you didn’t know how to react. There’s no doubt joy in the hurricane of emotions swirling in your chest, as well as the pacifying effect from both your and Jimin’s touch overwhelming the rising stress and conflict at the back of your head, forcing and pushing them back into the shadows.
You knew you should be stressing over the possibilities of having seven soulmates and how you’d divide your time to be able to equally spend time with everyone, it was already difficult having five these past few days. More often than not, you found yourself suffering a headache caused by the constant noise and overwhelming sensations each individual soulmarks gave you.
From the constant sounds of Namjoon’s heartbeat at the back of your head, and Jimin’s touch making your skin thrum, even the Amoneuron in your blood is having a hard time keeping you away from soulbond hyperactivity.
Someone’s phone erupted into a shrill scream, it was Taehyung’s. Picking it up, he automatically puts it on speaker and holds the end of the phone close to his mouth.
“Is it true? Please tell me it’s not true! I’m already competing with most of my hyungs for noona’s time!”
“This isn’t a competition, gguk.” Yoongi drawled in the background. “Didn’t we already establish that? No fighting for her hear—”
“What soulmark do they have?!”
“Manager Sejin is already on the way with a lawyer to handle the legal side of things, how are you guys doing right now? Is noona good?” Namjoon asks, sounding closer to the mic.
“She didn't faint if that's what you're asking about. If anything,” Taehyung turns to you. “She looks a little out of it.”
“How did it happen? Is it the test? Is it out already?” Hoseok's voice came through, nervous.
“Yeah we'll deliver it to you later also, remember hyung complaining about tasting something weird? Apparently he was tasting the hospital special soup—”
_______
On your dismissal, the doctor had handed the eldest their test results. Seokjin had thrown him out since he already knew what it'll entail but held on protectively on Hoseok's envelope.
Jimin had proposed a small celebration for the mark's manifestation for everyone, nothing too grand, just a few take outs appropriate for tomorrow’s dinner—because Jungkook and Tae had requested pancakes and waffles for whatever reason—and a small cake.
With five—not counting Jimin as he insisted that you both sit the activity out and Hoseok who visited his sister but promised to return the next day to read his result at dinner—men at your disposal, boxing up and moving your items into their dorm was easy, even if Yoongi has noticeably slowed down the stairs carrying the same one box he’s picked up since earlier; not that you’d call him out on it but you knew Seokjin and Jimin would to do it instead.
If it wasn't for Jungkook's eagerness to have you move in, it would have taken you all longer than you had today.
It was surreal seeing the items in your home slowly decrease, the mass on your shelves and all the personality of every room disappear with every box filled. You had been staying in the same apartment since you were 21, to have its familiar sights and spots be slowly stripped off of its glow felt sadder than you thought it would be.
BigHit had requested your company friends do all the packing while you were at the hospital, it wasn't forced but they acted like it was anyway. They (read: Minhyuk and Nabi) had jokingly complained about being tasked with doing things your soulmates should’ve been doing, Minhyuk going as far as threatening to sneak off something into one of the boxes and you feared for your life for what that something might entail.
You offered to buy them anything they want the next time you all visit the mall in exchange for their full cooperation and Minhyuk had vowed to run your bank dry with a sly grin.
“It's not like you’d even need them anymore when you’ve got the world’s biggest boyband as your soulmates, might as well spend your hard earned money on important things; friends, especially me though.”
You wouldn't deny the fact that you tried dating Guwon with the hopes of living lavishly without lifting a finger but the world would have to bathe in fire and water before you'd let them buy you expensive things outside of food; that you accept because you'd be able to taste and experience delicious dishes. Not to mention, it's practical.
Having your furniture moved out as well was out of the question after an hour of argument with Jimin and Jin who insisted on having you buy new decorations, except for the books, trinkets, and plethora of BTS collection you were given by the members themselves every comeback.
You argued that you didn’t need them to buy new furniture when you already have working ones.
But that argument was easily disproved when the maknaes (plus Namjoon because, hyung you’re big, we need to weight test it!) had jumped into your bed and the frames creaked and trembled.
He was right, as much as it pains you to accept it.
But just because he's right doesn't mean you agree with him.
In the end, with one against eventually all of them, you were due for furniture shopping with Jimin, Yoongi and Namjoon the next day. Today though, you were bunking with Jimin due to the need for constant skinship and the lack of bed in your new room.
You spent the better half of the afternoon unboxing and filling your closet with your items which barely filled two shelves out of six that were bolted onto the wall of the small well-lit room.
“Noona, your closet is a bit… barren.”
“The closets are just huge, I have plenty.”
“I’m concerned that you think this is plenty.” He says, thumbing the material of your cream cardigan as a grin grows on his lips. “I think I saw a few cute clothes online that would fit you.”
“Don’t.”
“Can’t do much about it now, they’re already in transit.”
After finding out your and Jin’s soulmark, you had thought deciding what you ate for dinner until the bond settled would be a hassle or until you both learn how to disable it. But Jin had simply agreed on your choices that night with a shrug of his shoulder with that soft smile on his lips.
And that amount of trust in whatever you’ll pick scares you in ways you never thought it would.
It's just a simple decision, one would say, but the ugly voices at the back of your head wondered if you even deserve this amount of consideration from him when you hadn’t noticed his lingering feelings for you for years.
But it seems like that fact has long been swept under the rug when the maknaes bounded up to you with mischief in their eyes.
Upon the realization that their Jin hyung would agree to almost anything you’d eat for a while, Jungkook and Taehyung wasted no second running up to you to propose the idea of ordering you a strawberry ice cream for dessert, claiming it was the only way to test their hyung’s love for her.
“You see noona, if hyung really loves you like he said he does, he would suck it up like the man he is.” Jungkook had reasoned to you with Taehyung nodding behind him and Jimin grinning mischievously next to you.
Fortunately for Jin, you don’t think forcing him to taste strawberry flavored things on the day he found out he wasn’t untethered would be a good decision despite the loud voice at the back of your head goading you to follow through their plan for fun.
But you promised the maknaes that you’ll do it someday.
Dinner was surprisingly uneventful with a few talks about the schedule changes and the rumors Jungkook had read and heard from his small friend group outside his brothers. If it wasn’t for the soft glow of gold at the edge of your vision from where your foot is resting on top of Jimin’s under the table and the faint outline of the red string of fate stretching across to Yoongi’s right pinkie, you would’ve tricked your brain into thinking it was a normal dinner with your friends.
With the words streaming out of Jungkook’s mouth, Tae and Jimin’s additional information and the scandalous gasp and widened eyes around the table once the pieces began to form a picture, you almost thought it was an average weekly dinner with your bosses.
But soon enough, plates are taken into the kitchen and Jimin is already pulling you up to your room, saying how he wants to take a shower and that you should take your toiletries.
Something you had dreaded since you heard the doctor had sentenced you to be in constant skinship with Jimin.
Why are you even nervous?! You had seen him and his brothers in their boxers from being one of their make up artists yet your heart had been thudding loudly in your ears the moment you had entered his room with your travel bag in hand.
Turns out, there was a truth in the saying “Ignorance is bliss” in the fact that knowing something could alter the way you think and perceive even the smallest of actions. In your case, knowing Jimin's your soulmate while facing the dilemma of showering together had you completely fucked up.
On the verge of a breakdown, half a foot on the ledge and the other hanging over the fall.
You had swam in public pools with him before but it was always with the presence of others, to be alone in a small room in nothing but your undies while maintaining skinship with your soulmate—
Isn't that a bit too intimate?
Will you even survive?
To stand half naked in a minimal space alone with Jimin, your heart might just collapse.
Seeing him in his underwear shouldn't faze you as much as it should. He and the others has stripped in front of you in a haste of changing into the next costume for the next performance but in the minimal space of his bathroom where you both are secluded away from the other dwellers of the building and he's already topless and is now unbuttoning and sliding the zippers of his jorts, the mass in your throat kept on thickening with the tension in the air.
Your eyes roamed the soft, flatness of his stomach; from up his lightly freckled bare chest and down to the thin trail of hair down his abdomen. The prominent bones of his adonis belt had your throat drying up.
Seeing him topless shouldn't affect you the way it should yet you found yourself heating up at the sight of them.
When he begins to remove his pants, you force yourself to look away, cheeks burning hot as you thumb the top buttons of your—Taehyung’s—polo before beginning to undo them all with your heart thudding loudly in your ears.
The string tied to your finger lights up in a rhythmic beat, persistent and hurried. Wrapping your fingers around it, Yoongi's loud concern immediately washes over your body. You respond to him by pushing down reassurance down the lane and the thread dulls from one side.
“Did hyung contact you?”
You turn to Jimin, already stripped down to his boxers.
God is really testing you today, putting a handsome man in his underwear in front of you and tempting you to let your gaze fall down for a glimpse of his thick muscled thighs you always saw through the fabric of his skinny jeans.
“Ye-yeah, nothing to worry about though. Give me your foot, I need to remove my shirt.”
Obediently, he puts his foot forward and you step on it before making quick work of your shirt. You feel his burning gaze roam your skin and you shiver from its intensity.
By the time you had your pants pooling on the floor alongside his, your heart is thudding uncontrollably in a way that might concern Namjoon at how fast it's going.
Why is the calming effect of Jimin's touch absent when you need it?
“Ready to go?”
You almost jumped at how hoarse his voice had gotten but recovered quickly and nodded, stepping first into the shower and twisting the valve towards the hotter temperature. Jimin hissed the moment the water touched his skin, breaking the stifling tension for a moment.
“How are your skin not burning off?! It's so hot!”
You rolled your eyes. “You're being dramatic, it's not that hot.”
“It is! The mirror is literally steaming!” He exclaimed, pointing at the long horizontal mirror above the sink which is indeed, fogging up.
Jimin then leaned over, his naked chest touching your back. Goosebumps prickled your skin and you barely stopped the urge to shiver as he manipulated the valve until he was satisfied with the temperature. When he steps back, you finally let out the breath you didn't realize you were holding.
Hearing your exhale, he laughed lightheartedly. The fucker did it on purpose.
Trying to ignore the thumps of your racing heart, you busied yourself with the task of washing your hair. You reached for the shampoo bottle and popped open the cap, body still facing the wall.
“Noona.”
You looked over your shoulder and Jimin was scratching the back of his head sheepishly.
“Can I wash your hair for you?” He shyly asks, his sly attitude from earlier nonexistent. “I've never done that with someone else before. I-I’ve always wanted to do that now and now that we're soulmates, I was–I was wondering if maybe I–we could—”
“Not even with that girl you’ve dated before?”
He shook his head. “We were too busy to do something like that, noona. Idol lives and all that. It's one of the reasons why we broke up.”
“She was pretty nice though.”
His lips quirks up. “Don’t get jealous noona, you’re my soulmate after all.”
You hit his shoulder and he brought his arms up to shield himself, giggling. “Do you want to wash each other’s hair or not?!”
Despite your agreement, you were beyond nervous as you handed him the shampoo and turned around to shut the shower off. The string on your finger thrummed once more, still concerned as your heart leapt up to your throat when Jimin's fingers began to thread and scrape his nails against your scalp.
A thrill of pleasure shoots down your spine and you hold back the urge to mewl as he begins to put more pressure on his motions.
It stayed like that for a while and you reveled in the pure domesticity of it all.
When Jimin retracts his hands, you reach for his shampoo and order him to turn around.
“What if I don't want to?” He challenges with a mischievous smirk.
“If it gets in your eyes, it's your fault.”
He giggled and shrunk down to your height, to which you hit his shoulder for and he laughed, standing back up.
“Can you even reach the top of my head like this?”
“Fine but don't complain about your knees hurting, you wanted this.” You jokingly say as he bends his knees once more, a playful lilt in his eyes.
Once you lathered the shampoo enough, you began.
You’ve seen multiple couples on screen shower together and had once wondered how it’d felt having someone to help reach the spots you couldn’t as well as do those domestic things such as brushing your teeth together and just washing each other in general. The actors always made them natural and romantic, with the soft lighting bouncing off their skin and their laughter ringing in the small space.
But showering with Jimin is anything you’ve ever thought of.
Against the other members, Jimin is easily dwarfed by them, matched with the constant jokes about his height, it's easy to forget that the man is still taller than the average man. He towered over you, his eyes intense and lit with a playful sultriness. His lips twisted into a mischievous smirk as he bent his knees low enough where you could touch the top of his head without risking a stiff neck or standing on your tiptoes.
He’s peering up at you yet you feel smaller under his gaze.
He had always done this, getting into your face while you retouched his makeup. In a way, it was nice that you’re slowly regaining the normalcy
But it's not appreciated when he’s doing it when you’re already fighting demons trying so hard not to ogle at his body and explode from how flustered you are.
“Are you seriously getting flushed now noona? We’ve done this plenty of times already, why now?”
Is he seriously asking you that?
He laughed. Your thoughts must’ve reflected on your face.
“Didn’t know you’d be affected by something as normal as this. Don’t you see us naked at least every other day?” He asks with a quirk to his eyebrow and you narrowed your eyes further at him.
“You know damn well why,” You say, slapping his shoulder before turning to open the shower once more. Laughing when the water burst open above him, cutting him off from replying.
With the tension dissolving with the shampoo on his hair, a playful grin replaced the coy smirk and with his newly washed hair, he grabbed your arms in an iron grip and began to shake his head at you, flicking water from his hair and onto you.
When he was done, he then pulled you into the stream with a bubbling laugh as he watched the shampoo suds dissolve with the water. But with both your arms pinned in place, you weren't able to wipe your eyes and had them closed the moment he had you under the shower head.
“I'm—I’m going to put chili in your fucking water, I can't see!”
With sorrys in between fits of giggles, Jimin reached up to wipe your face for you when he realized this.
Shower with Jimin sailed smoothly from that point on. After his teasing, he made no more attempts to fluster you, even when he was scrubbing your back a little longer than it should've taken.
He had, however, made comments on how many steps there are for you to shower.
“Why do you need to shampoo twice, use soap AND body wash? It’s not like you’d ever get sick anymore when I’m here.”
You just rolled your eyes and told him to leave if he’s going to complain about your routine. Eventually though, you speed through your routine due to him whining about how he’s starting to feel cold, lightheaded—to which he dramatized by leaning his hurting head on your shoulder—, and is suddenly sleepy.
Changing into your pajamas was a little hard as you attempted to do it all under the safety of a towel while also maintaining skinship with Jimin every other ten seconds who's also doing the same.
You managed somehow and soon enough, you both situated yourselves into the bed, with your legs thrown over his and backreading the bangtan gc that had awakened the moment Jimin had his phone.
Surprisingly, even Jungkook was active.
[21:24] Mimi: It's so weird tae [21:24] Mimi: I’ve never seen someone use soap AND body wash THEN washes their hair t w i c e [21:24] Hoba: I do that… [21:25] Mimi: That’s expected hyung, you’re a neat freak. [21:25] You: Why are you so weird about me being clean?! [21:25] You: IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU BEING AN IDOL I BET YOU'D USE THOSE 11-IN-1 SHAMPOOS [21:26] Mimi: ITS PSYCHOPATH BEHAVIOR [21:26] Mimi: also EXCUSE YOU??? [21:26] Jinnie: hoba I think he just called you a psychopath [21:26] Hoba: 🙁 [21:27] Ggukie: NOW YOU MADE HYUNG SAD [21:27] Hoba: 🙁 [21:27] Hoba: you think im weird jimin-ah?🥺 [21:27] Yoongs: why is this even a conversation [21:27] Joonie: Jimin just because you don’t do it, doesn’t mean it's unorthodox. [21:28] Minnie: you’re one of them, are you hyung?! [21:28] Tete: I still cant believe Jimin just showered with noona… [21:28] Tete: why are we breezing through that information? [21:28] Jinnie: ok so lets not talk about that [21:29] Jinnie: this pretty prince is going to cook tomorrow's breakfast, what does the group's prettiest want?
Reading his message felt like cold water dousing you awake and you’re suddenly attacked by a wave of guilt.
Is it okay for you to even make demands like this? Do you even deserve being Seokjin’s dearest?
“Ask him for waffles, I'm craving for them.” Jimin says, his voice slicing through your thoughts and you turn back to your phone.
[21:29] Ggukie: ask me too hyung! [21:29] Jinnie: fine I’ll bite [21:29] Jinnie: what do you want brat? [21:30] Ggukie: noona’s love :DD
You watched as Jin’s profile pic popped up and came down multiple times, and each time they do, your and Jimin’s giggles multiply.
[21:32] Jinnie: I’m blocking you [21:32] Joonie: I should have you kicked out for that stupid, corny ass joke oh my god [21:32] Yoongs: that activated my fight or flight [21:32] Yoongs: don’t do that again [21:32] Ggukie: hyung ask me again [21:32] Ggukie: promise I’ll respond properly this time :] [21:33] Jinnie: Y/N? [21:33] Ggukie: HYUNG [21:33] Minnie: she says she wants waffles :> [21:33] Jinnie: I don’t believe anything that comes out of your mouth, Park Jimin [21:34] Minnie: D: [21:34] You: I want scrambled eggs and pancakes :D
“Get out of my room if you're going to betray me like this.”
“You shouldn’t have played around earlier then.”
“You shouldn’t have played around earlier then. Give me that!” You stretch your arm away from him but Jimin was faster, managing to pluck your phone from your grasp and moving to place it on his side of the floor.
Without hesitation, you launched yourself at his hand making him yelp before it dissolved into giggles when you managed to catch him and had curled up around his arm, fingers attempting to pry him away from your phone.
It was how Tae had found you both in and immediately lept in, taking your side the moment he had seen you and Jimin tussled for your phone.
With Tae’s help, you were able to take back your phone only to see that it had locked itself from the many times the screen had picked up on both you and Jimin’s palms and had typed in the wrong combination after the other. For that, you slapped his arm.
“What did I do wrong?! It’s not my fault the stupid phone couldn’t differentiate between palm and fingers!”
“If I wasn’t required to touch you, I’d have you kicked out of this room.”
Jimin pushed himself up, face incredulous. “This is literally my room.”
“Next week you should sleep in my room instead, noona. I’d love to have you there.” Taehyung says, pulling you to his chest and side-eyeing his friend. “I wouldn’t be as mean as Jiminie.”
“Why am I getting disrespected in my own room? Is it gang up on Jimin day?!”
“When is it not gang up on Jimin day?”
“Why you—GET OUT OF MY ROOM.”

I'm so sorry to everyone that I freaked out with the last post, I was trying so hard not to 😭 I have that like instant fear as soon as I see "we need to talk" or something in the same vein. I always think it's something bad.
This isn't bad, at least depending on how your perspective I guess.
So...I'm having thoughts about CRCB in October. I planned out posting schedules for Kyletober and CRCB and my Patreon stuff and it's going to basically be a post every day, sometimes multiple in multiple places.
That's a lot.
So, I am set on doing Kyletober since all of the fics are already written, but I was planning on continuing CRCB during October as well. But...I think I need a little break from CRCB. It's been about eight months of posting almost every single week and it's been a lot. I'm struggling with chapters right now and with work it's vastly limiting the time I have to write and focus on things and I'm kind of burning out right now.
So, what I wanted to discuss was potentially putting CRCB on hold for October while I focus on Kyletober and everything involved with that. Trying to do both is a lot and I'm not sure I can handle all of it, plus life, plus work.
I was planning on not necessarily putting CRCB on hold, but doing more of a "whenever I can/am inspired" random posting chapters kind of like I did in the beginning when I first started writing the fic, in November/December because those are very busy months and I will be dead tired from work and just general life.
I think I might still do that for November/December and possibly into the new year since there's no way the fic will be finished even if I posted every week until the end of December.
BUT
That's something I'll think about and make a decision on later.
Right now, my thought is...would you hate me if I put CRCB on pause in October? IF I do, I promise I won't end Chapter 39 on a cliffhanger. I wasn't planning on it anyway, but I promise I won't end it on a cliffhanger if I decide not to post any chapters in October.
That way if I do put it on pause, then I can not focus on it for a bit and give my brain a refresh, and I can also focus all my energy on Kyletober.
So yeah, it's going to be a lot doing both at the same time, and honestly I'm ready for a little break from CRCB. It's been going for a long time and it's a lot of words to get out in a week. I've been super stressed lately and I'm just struggling a lot trying to get through chapters.
So yeah. That's basically the dilemma here and the discussion to be had. I know y'all will tell me it's my blog and I can do whatever I want, but I would like opinions on it. Are y'all okay with me putting CRCB on hold to focus on Kyletober? Then pick it back up for probably just whenever I can chapter updates for the rest of the year? In January things will calm down and I'll have more time to relax and write and maybe get close to finishing the story. Plus I know a lot of my readers will be busy the next three months with the holidays and vacations and family and school and all of that, so you won't have to worry about getting behind and having to catch up with a bunch of chapters.
So...let me know...
#I wish I could keep writing it every week#but I need a break#a little refresh one could call it#it might do all of us some good

last forever [1/13]
Summary: Zoro only offered to marry you to keep you out of an arranged marriage with a man much older than you. You agreed with the caveat of ending it via annulment once you received word from your parents regarding the original engagement, despite your growing feelings for your close friend.
Pairing: Zoro x Fem!reader, mentioned Sanami later (like epilogue later so chill)
Warnings: Marriage of Convenience, Fake Marriage, referenced sex (waaaaaay later on), mutual pining, Zoro is bad at feelings but what's new there, eventual romance I promise, mention of past attempted assault (I'll warn in that chapter), creepy older dude later on
Notes: Hello, this is a fanfic I've been working on for a few months now. I'm still not done, but I figured I would go ahead and start posting it here as a cross post with Quotev and AO3. Sometimes I find this, Zoro and the story, hard to write, but I'm trying. This will NOT be a one-to-one rehashing of the arcs but will have more focus on Zoro and Reader's relationship as it progresses. The first two chapters are written in past tense, everything afterward is present tense, sorry about that. I've been having more fun writing present tense instead of past tense. I have the first three chapters completed, I'm still working on chapter four, but hope to have it done for Monday, and I intend to update mostly on Mondays for this one. Zoro and Reader call each other husband and wife at times, it's in italics on purpose. Hope you enjoy this one.
[Ch. 2]
Never did you think or imagine your wedding day would be like this. In a courthouse in a backwoods town with no real witnesses, to someone you'd only known for about a year and a half now. This wasn't even out of love for him, he'd only agreed to prevent you from being legally forced into marriage with a man several years older than you who had two other wives already.
No, you and Roronoa Zoro weren't in love, but he was trying to help you out so you didn't end up in a bad situation or with bodyguards chasing you down to force you back to your home village. When you had told him the story, he was honestly disgusted hearing how your family was treating you like an object to be sold, instead of as your own person. The whole reason you'd run away from home was to avoid this, but a letter brought to you by your family's personal carrier bird a few weeks ago changed that. As soon as you turned eighteen, if you weren't married or engaged to someone else, you'd be forced into marrying the creep that agreed to this when you were just fifteen. While you broke down in tears out of fear, Zoro told you he'd marry you to keep you from being taken back home. You told him he didn't have to, but he brought up that after your family heard, if they dropped the arranged marriage, you could get an annulment and it would be like this marriage never happened. You'd be free from your family and the creep, still able to travel and live your own life.
You were so grateful you couldn't stop crying and thanked him numerous times, never once telling him you hoped you'd never have to get an annulment with him. Your feelings for him were still new, he was a year older than you, but he'd protected you well in the time you knew each other. Of course, you could hold your own as a swordswoman yourself, but Zoro always tried to leave the recon to you while he took out your bounty targets.
So, a week after you turned eighteen, once you reached a small town with a courthouse, you both immediately went there to get this sham of a marriage completed. The clerk looked you both over several times, asking your ages and you lied, claiming you were both twenty-one when she said you'd need parental approval if you were younger than twenty. She didn't ask for proof, instead mumbling something to herself about how it seemed people were getting married younger and younger every year. No more questions about witnesses, parental approval, or identification to prove your ages, the older woman just filled out the paperwork and had you two sign it for processing.
While it was being processed, she sent you to the other side of the room to sit and wait.
"Thank you."
Zoro just shrugged, wishing the old bat would hurry it up so you could find a hotel and get a room so he could go to sleep. "You don't have to keep thanking me."
Nodding, you bit your lip. It was weird to think you'd legally be husband and wife, despite not being in love with each other, but part of you hoped that maybe over time Zoro would come to love you, and you him, so you'd be a few steps ahead of the curve.
The clerk called you both back over a few minutes later, stamping the papers in her hands and pulling a few more. "You're legally married now, congratulations. I've given you an extra copy since you requested it, and here's an annulment form if you've decided you made a mistake. You have six months to fill out and submit it, at any courthouse, otherwise you'll have to get a divorce."
You nodded and thanked the old woman, who told you two to be careful as you both left. You weren't entirely sure why, but if Zoro knew, he kept his mouth shut about it. Once you left, Zoro started looking for a place to stay while you found somewhere you could have dinner. Neither of you planned to stay in this town for more than a night, so you weren't worried about cashing in any bounties that day.
After finding a place to eat, you stayed nearby while you wrote a brief letter to your family and sent it to them, with your marriage certificate, by your family carrier bird. You really just hoped and prayed that they would accept this information and not still demand you return home, whether they wanted to meet Zoro because they believed your letter, or they wanted you to annul the marriage immediately to marry the creep that agreed to it first. Either way, you had no plans to follow their demands or return home.
You and Zoro didn't meet up until it was about dinner time, not a word about your marriage being spoken but your plans to leave the next morning and head to the next town were the main subject. You split off again after dinner, Zoro giving you the second key to your hotel room while he took a walk, in case you wanted to go and shower or go on to bed. You did so, taking a long shower to keep yourself distracted before choosing one of the two beds as yours for the night, laying face down with your face in the pillow. By the time Zoro did return, you were nearly asleep until he woke you when he opened the door.
"Sorry, didn't mean to wake you."
"It's fine…I wasn't sleeping yet."
You weren't sure if it was just you, but things felt awkward with Zoro now. It probably was just you, because he went to bed like nothing was different, telling you that he wanted to leave as soon as possible in the morning. Shells Town was the next destination for the two of you, since a Marine base was there you figured new bounty posters would be available.
You spent the night half awake, unsure of what you were feeling anymore, but you knew one thing.
It was definitely not the kind of wedding day you ever expected to have.
+!+
What do I do, what do I do??
Pacing around the Marine fortress, you didn't know if you should even try to break in and free Zoro or just wait for the month he agreed on with Helmeppo to be up. All of this because he protected a little girl from the brat's dogs and punched him in the face, the spoiled boy using it as an excuse to bring Zoro in like a criminal, and you just weren't sure what you should do. He'd told you not to interfere and when Helmeppo tried to include you in it, you were surprised Zoro threatened him further and said you had no part in the matter.
Stopping, you sighed and crouched, holding your head in your hands and whining. "What do I do…?"
"Hey, you okay??"
The voice above you sounded kind, and you looked up to see a boy with a straw hat and a scarf under his left eye, with another young boy who had pink hair and glasses. Both looked concerned, wondering why you looked like you were fighting a headache outside of the Marine fortress.
"I'm fine…"
"You sure?" The boy in the hat grinned at you, wanting to really make sure you were fine, getting eye level with you while the other boy looked nervously around. "You don't look fine!"
"Luffy!"
You laughed, sighing a bit and standing up, the boy called Luffy following suit. "Yeah, I'm…I'm sure. My friend just…the Marines got him, I'm not sure what to do."
Luffy and the other boy, Koby you learned, both questioned you until you revealed it was Zoro that was your friend, causing Luffy to get excited as he climbed the wall to look into the yard, while Koby was even more nervous than before. He couldn't even believe that you were friends with the notorious pirate hunter Zoro, let alone traveling with him.
"Hey so that's him??"
Koby climbed up with Luffy and nearly fainted, almost falling off the wall when he saw Zoro. You were so focused on the two boys you didn't notice the little girl, Rika, climbing in and over the wall with rice balls in hand. You could hear her offering them to Zoro despite him telling her to scram, before Helmeppo showed up and had her thrown back over the wall, Luffy catching her and surprising you.
"Hey, I'll take her back to her mom's place!"
Luffy nodded and gave Rika to you, letting you run off with her. You got Rika back to her mother's restaurant, making sure she was alright when Luffy and Koby arrived. Luffy told Rika that Zoro actually ate the rice balls Helmeppo ruined, which didn't really surprise you. He had a soft spot for kids, you'd noticed over time, and always tried to help them if he could.
When Helmeppo came back around and started bragging that he was going to have Zoro executed in a few days, Luffy did the same thing and punched him in the face. The three of you ran off, Luffy jumping over the wall to tell Zoro that if he helped him out, he had to join his pirate crew, but Zoro didn't get a chance to fully agree or deny before Luffy ran off to the fortress to find his swords. Koby and you attempted to untie Zoro, but he was arguing against this due to the deal he made with Helmeppo.
"Come on, I only have to last a couple weeks more!"
"He's not gonna let you go! He's gonna have you executed tomorrow!"
"What?!"
Zoro looked at you, wondering if you had heard that or if Koby was lying to him, even though the younger boy had no reason to lie to him.
"I heard every word, that's exactly what he said."
The Marines, including Axe-Hand Morgan, came after the three of you and attempted to fire at you and Koby, but you knew how to use your sword well enough to block them from hitting Koby or you with their bullets.
Luffy returned finally, blocking another set of bullets about to hit the three of you, showing off his rubber powers which actually kind of freaked you out. Zoro, finally having his three swords back, was able to get free and stop the Marines from attacking all of you any further, calling Luffy Captain after agreeing to join his pirate crew. Another shock for you, one that you'd have to deal with later on.
Luffy was the one to beat Morgan, the other Marines all cheering once they realized they were free from the tyrant's reign.
The whole thing made you smile, glad things had worked out, even as Zoro nearly passed out from hunger, making you laugh and shake your head.
"You're so lame sometimes, husband."
+!+
"So why'd you call him husband earlier??"
Face turning red, you looked at Zoro who sat next to you in Luffy's small boat that just barely comfortably held the three of you. Your husband was fast asleep, arms behind his head, but you waved your hand in front of his face to make doubly sure he was asleep, before hearing a light snore come from him.
Scooting across the boat, you sat right next to Luffy who gave you a confused smile.
"Look, Luffy…you can't tell anyone else you recruit."
"Huh?"
You were trying to keep your voice down so Zoro didn't wake, but Luffy acted like he couldn't even hear you.
"Zoro and I are married."
"You're WH–"
You threw your hands over his mouth, looking over to Zoro barely moving, but still fast asleep. You'd quieted Luffy just in time so he didn't wake your swordsman.
"We're married, but it's only because he's helping me with something. We're not in love, we're not a couple. It's…a marriage of convenience okay?"
Luffy nodded, like he understood everything you just told him. He didn't really, but he at least understood you and Zoro weren't in love, just married.
Weird, but he thought he got it.
"Please, don't tell anyone. I'm waiting to hear from my family before we annul the marriage."
That part confused him, but Luffy decided to agree and promised he wouldn't tell anyone, he didn't question you further. He thought you and Zoro were close, he wouldn't have been that surprised if you said you two were in love and together, but if you said you weren't, that this was just a friend helping another friend, he'd believe you.
That, and as soon as his stomach started growling he forgot anything else he wanted to ask.
"Do you have any food, Luffy?"
"Nope!" Luffy grinned and your face paled, looking at Zoro who just snored again and you had a feeling of dread.
"Oh lord what have we done?"

Please Please Please (Don't Prove 'Em Right) Chapter 2
Trafaglar Law x afab Female!Reader
Previous Chapter | Next Chapter
Summary:
You are the Heart Pirates' beloved cook and sniper. However, you were also an insufferable troublemaker who always seemed to get on Law's nerves. He swears he's going to get rid of you one day, but as much as he hates it, why does he find you fascinating? Was it because you reminded him of someone he was greatly fond of?
As your relationship with Law grows, he only hopes you don't fucking embarrass him. After all, he has an image to uphold as one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
This story starts off as short stories between (Y/N), Law and the Heart Pirates, then picks up into the One Piece canon timeline, starting from Punk Hazard. This is a slow-burn Law x Female Reader story!
Updates every Sunday!

Chapter 2: Soba, Warrior of the Sea
Chapter summary: Attempting to find blackmail material against your captain, you took a volume of Law's favourite comic series. The only problem is you misplaced it an hour later, and if you didn't find it, the captain was going to cut you up and throw you to the bottom of the sea.
Notes: Thank you for the love! I'm so glad y'all are loving this like I am! I'll make a taglist if more people are interested. And no, the title is not a typo and you'll find out why soon ;)
wc: 4k (hefty chapter this week!)
The Polar Tang smelt like fried eggs.
It was 7 am and Hearts Pirates were just waking up. It was a brand new day, and the crew were looking forward to seeing if they could dock on a new island.
Ikakku made her way into the kitchen first, and she saw you cooking breakfast for the crew. You had your white jumpsuit unzipped with the sleeves tied around your waist. Your white tank top was stained with grease and was clinging to your skin due to sweat.
She sat down facing your direction and rested her elbows on the table, with her cheek leaning on her palm. "Morning (Y/n)!" she greeted you.
You turn your head to see that Ikkaku has arrived. "Morning Ikkaku! Sorry I didn't wake you up, I knew that you wanted to help me today but you looked so peaceful sleeping," you said.
Your crew-mate waved her hand dismissing the apology. "Don't even worry about it. I know you love being in the kitchen by yourself." She glanced at your exposed body. "Shouldn't you change and put your suit back on?" she commented.
You made an annoyed click with your mouth. "You know how annoying these jumpsuits are. I don't know why he insists that we can all do our jobs while wearing a white garbage bag as clothes. I don't care if he sees me like this and gets mad, I can't cook with this shit on." you complained.
The girl behind you giggled, "Get mad? It's more like ogle your almost half-naked body. You know the captain has somewhat of a soft spot for you."
You scoffed. "Captain? We're talking about the guy who sliced me when he found that I put flour and bread in his rice balls?"
"If anyone else did that, they would get thrown out of this sub." Ikkaku defended.
"Oh please. You know the captain is an emotionally constipated man who doesn't take a second glance at anyone."
"You'd be surprised our dear cook. I've seen Captain stare at you last month." Shachi interrupted as he walked into the kitchen with Penguin.
"Shachi, that was because he was going to decapitate (Y/n) for smacking a loaf of bread on his head," Penguin corrected him.
"Oh..." he muttered.
You threw your head back in laughter as you remembered how you accidentally smacked the captain with a bagged loaf of bread because he was somehow caught in between the crossfire of you and Shachi arguing about stolen food portions. That day was the first time your head was separated from your body.
The three crew-mates sitting at the dining table noticed how your cheeks flushed a light pink. They all grinned maniacally.
"Were you thinking of the captain?" Penguin singsonged.
You rolled your eyes as you placed a batch of fried eggs on a plate. "You know I don't have feelings for the captain like that."
"Aww, that's not true," Ikkaku whined.
You continued to batter up a batch of pancakes and poured it into the hot pan in front of you. "Well, I can't lie the captain is good-looking. But I don't just fall in love with someone based on looks you guys, I would want to get to know the person before I would think about committing to a relationship," you explained as you flipped the pancake.
Shachi suddenly straightened his back in a sudden realization. "So you do admit that you find our awesome captain handsome! Why don't you try getting closer to him?" he asked.
You grabbed the plate of eggs from the counter and walked up towards your hungry crew-mates to place it on the table.
"I think the captain would rather eat bread than to get to know me. Besides, I know that he finds me insufferable, but that's because he doesn't know how to have fun. Now, who wants my special fried eggs?"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was 10 am, and you just finished cleaning the kitchen and making the crew's lunch. You proudly put your hands on your hips as you scanned the area. You were a proud cook and proud of what you did. Your heart swelled in appreciation that you could use your talents and that your talents were well appreciated within the crew.
Unlike your 3 shitty brothers who always just shoved food down their throats without care. But that wasn't important.
You glanced at Bepo, the captain's favourite crew-mate (your assumption), finishing wiping the dishes clean. The Mink was always around the captain, so often that you swore that they were probably shower buddies. A mental image of Law and Bepo bathing together popped into your head. You stiffened a laugh.
"(Y/n)-san, Captain wanted to request grilled fish and rice for dinner," Bepo said, interrupting your daydream.
You exhaustedly sighed. "Again? This is the third time we had that this week, I swear that my breath permanently smells like fish now."
The Mink turned around to you and lowered his head. "Sorry..."
You gave a halfhearted smile to your crew-mate. "Never mind that I can never get mad at you Bepo, you're one of the few people who help me around the kitchen. Tell the captain that if he wants his favourite dish he needs to come up and ask me personally instead of using you as a communicator."
Bepo profusely nodded. "I'll tell him right away."
As Bepo was going to leave, you stopped him. "Wait," you called up to him. The Bear stopped in his tracks.
You put your hand on your chin and started to think. "I don't want to make that fucking grilled fish and rice dish again. What if I know something about the captain and I can use it to hold against him? That way I can never make those dishes ever again."
Once your idea formed in your head you started to grin evilly and rubbed your hands together like a madman.
Bepo, seeing this unfold in front of him, started to get nervous. "Uh, (Y/n)-san? What are you doing? Why did you stop me?" he asked.
You whipped your head up to face Bepo and walked up in front of him. Putting your hand on the side of your mouth like you were telling a secret, you started to ask, "You're pretty close to the captain right?"
Bepo flinched. "Uhm, yes?"
"And you know a lot about him right? Like his deepest and darkest secrets?"
"Well, I guess so?"
"So, if you tell me something about him, something that he doesn't want anyone to know, you'd tell me in exchange for, let's say, my special sushi recipe?"
Bepo started sweating and you smirked. You knew the Mink bear loved your special sushi recipe, and you knew he could not resist.
"(Y/n)-san... I can't betray the captain like that." he said. The poor bear sounded like he was trying to convince himself not to give in to your temptation.
"Oh? Well, that's too bad, I was going to also make Soba for tonight too, what a shame," you said with fake sadness.
Bepo started to whimper. If there was one thing he didn't play about, it was Soba.
The Mink started to whip his head left and right to see if anyone was listening in to the conversation. Then he leaned down to your level.
"Oh alright, but PLEASE don't tell the captain about this!" he harshly whispered.
You grinned as you crossed your heart. "The information is safe with me."
Bepo hesitated, then he quickly confessed, "The captain is a huge fan of the comic series Sora, Warrior of the Sea! He has a huge collection hidden in his library of books."
You leaned back in surprise, with your smile widening into a perplexed grin. "Our feared captain is a NERD?!"
Bepo frantically waved his paws at you. "(Y/n)-san! Please you're being too loud!" he begged.
You burst out laughing, bending frontwards while your hands were clutching your stomach. Oh, the information that you just obtained was your One Piece! You never expect your stoic and boring captain to be a huge fan of a children's comic series. And he collected the comics too? This was just what you needed to blackmail Law.
You quickly collected yourself from laughing too hard. "Good doing business with you Bepo, you can expect a very good dinner tonight." You said. You winked at him and hurriedly walked out of the kitchen.
"Oh man, what did I do..." he mumbled.
Meanwhile, you were scouring around the Polar Tang to find Law's collection of books. While walking in the corridors of the submarine, you encountered Jean Bart.
"Hey, Jean! Where are you heading to?" you asked the big man.
Jean rubbed the back of his neck. "Hey (Y/n)! I'm heading to the infirmary for my annual checkup with the captain."
The statement gave you a green light. You were going to head to the captain's room to get your hands on those comics no matter what. It may be a big risk but if it means that you wouldn't have to grill fish ever again, so be it.
"Good to know! I'm just heading back to my room, I've been doing a lot of cooking today." You said it as an alibi.
You started to walk past the man. Jean's head followed your direction. He looked confused. "But your shared room is the opposite way...?" he said, watching your form walk further away.
You didn't hear the man. You were hyper-focused on sneaking into the captain's room while he was busy with medical examinations.
Eventually, you came across a double door. There was a sign on the left door that read Trafalgar Law. This must be it.
You slowly grabbed the handle of the right door and twisted it. Pushing the door open you slowly walked into the captain's quarters. It was clean and neat as you expected it to be. The captain was a clean freak, the complete opposite of what you dealt with in the kitchen. On the right of the room was a queen bed, with a nightstand on its left side. There was a decent-sized desk perpendicular to the doors which were filled with scattered papers. To the right of the desk was a tall bookshelf filled with all kinds of books.
Bingo.
You stepped into the room and closed the door quietly behind your back. You hurriedly walked to the bookshelf and started scanning through from top to bottom.
"Archives of Medical Plants... Grand List of Diseases... Mink Autonomy... North Blue Medical Association, dang nothing but medical books," you muttered as you looked through the bookshelf.
Unable to find anything on the bookshelf, you looked around the desk. You opened the drawers hoping to find some comics but found your bounty poster instead.
"Weird, why does he have my poster in there? It doesn't look like he has the rest of the crew's posters." you thought.
You put your hands on your hips and huffed in frustration. "If I were Trafalgar Law, where would I put my precious comic books?" you thought again.
Your eyes soon landed on the nightstand, and a lightbulb went off on your head.
You hurriedly scampered to the nightstand. You immediately opened the bottom drawer and found your One Piece.
In the drawer were 12 volumes of Sora, Warrior of the Sea. You carefully picked up the first volume. It was in pristine condition. You noticed it was covered with a plastic sleeve and you chuckled.
"Oh captain I never thought you would be a nerd. This is so good," you said giddily.
You quickly took the first volume and placed it under your tank top at your back. Then you quickly put on the sleeves of your jumpsuit and zipped it up. You promptly got up and then quickly left the bedroom, quietly closing the door behind your back. You sighed in relief and took in a deep breath until someone spoke up on your left, "Why were you in the captain's room?"
"GAHHHH!!" you screamed. You whipped your head to your left, only to see Penguin leaning up against the wall with a grin.
"Is captain also in there too?" he inquired.
You grabbed onto the man's collar and pushed him against the wall. "Are you crazy? Don't scare me like that! And no, the captain is in the infirmary right now with Jean!" you whispered harshly.
Penguin raised his hands in defeat. "All right all right. But what were you doing in there?"
You released him and took a step back. "Well since you're here, I found the captain's deepest darkest secret," you said grinning.
He gasped and put his hands on his mouth. "You found out about Corazon?!"
You tilted your head to the left. "Cora-who?"
Penguin laughed nervously. "Oh, that, uh never mind."
You huffed, dismissing what the man just said. "I found out that captain is a huge nerd! I have his copy of Sora, Warrior of the Sea hidden on me right now." you snickered.
Penguin looked like he was going to faint. Then you saw him morph into the angriest you had ever seen him, "WHY WOULD YOU TAKE THAT?!" he screamed.
You flinched and his sudden outburst. "Whoa now, it's just blackmail material."
"The captain does not play about touching his comic books!"
You squinted. "Wait...you knew about this?"
The man made a raspberry noise "Of course I did. Bepo, Shachi and I grew up with the captain."
"Ah, that makes sense."
Now Penguin squinted. "Wait a minute, who told you about Captain's collection?"
You nervously laughed. "Ah, Bepo told me."
He groaned. "That fucking bear can't keep his mouth shut," he mumbled.
You dismissively waved your hand. "Never mind him. I bribed him. Now, I know you want to take a peak of this comic with me, don't you Penguin?" you asked.
He scratched the back of his neck. "Well, it won't hurt just to read a bit."
"Great!" you said as you clapped your hands. "Let's head to the kitchen to read!"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was now 4 pm and you just finished preparing dinner. You and Penguin delightfully indulged in the first volume of Sora, Warrior of the Sea. As much as you wanted to continue making fun of the captain for liking a kid's comic series, you found yourself enjoying it as well. But, you reminded yourself that the reason why you took the comic book was to blackmail your captain into never suggesting rice and grilled fish ever again. So you placed it in your shared room with Ikkaku.
You cleaned up the remaining dishes and placed them next to the sink. You made your special sushi and Soba, as per Bepo's request. You hurriedly walked out of the kitchen to go to your room, eager to read the rest of the comic before using it for blackmail.
However, when you entered your shared room and checked your bed, where you hid the book under your covers, you couldn't find it. You started to panic and started throwing your stuff around to find it. You knew Ikkaku wouldn't have taken it, she was in the boiler room all day so she wouldn't have entered the room at all.
"Fuck! It was just here! Where did it go?!" you spluttered.
You started to check your desk until you heard a knock on the door.
"One moment!" you called out.
The knock came in again, but this time someone spoke. "It's me (Y/n)-ya. Can I speak to you?"
Your blood ran cold. This was the worst timing ever, and now you were going to die today because of it.
You sped walked to the door and opened it and saw your captain standing at the door. He was wearing his usual black coat, but this time he wasn't donning his signature hat.
You laughed out of nervousness. "H-hey captain! How can I help you?" you asked.
The raven-haired man raised his eyebrows as he noticed your nervousness. "Is something the matter (Y/n)-ya? Are you unwell?" he inquisitively asked.
You waved your hand. "Nooo, I'm all okay captain. Why did you come to see me?" you said trying to change the subject.
Law wasn't convinced by your statement but continued anyway. "Bepo told me to come to you directly for food suggestions." He was struggling to meet your eyes. "Well, you told him to tell you and you're right. I should be approaching you personally for things that I request. It isn't fair to dismiss you when you're one of our important crew members." he continued. It seemed like he was trying to apologize. However, that was the least of your worries because you had a lost comic book to find and if you didn't find it soon you were good as dead.
You let out a forced laugh. "Oh it's nothing, captain, no problem, I'll make your fish and rice tonight, let me just head to the kitchen to make it right now!"
You attempted to walk past the doctor but he gently pushed you back in the room and entered with you. He promptly closed the door behind him and took a step towards you, leaning close to your face.
"(Y/n)-ya, you're hiding something aren't you?" he said, staring into you with a strange gleam in his eyes.
The air suddenly felt hot and you started sweating profusely. You looked off to the side and pursued your lips together. "I don't know what you're talking about captain."
The man's face fell into a frown. "You're a terrible liar (Y/n)-ya. You can't keep a straight face."
Your face turned red in embarrassment. Then suddenly, Law used his Devil Fruit powers to materialize the comic book into his hands. You felt like you were going to pass out.
"Oh, so you have no idea how this ended up in your room?" he said mockingly.
"H-how did you, I-i-" you stuttered in shock. Then you suddenly remember again why you took it in the first place.
"HA! I took it because I found out that you're a huge nerd! You're a huge fan of Soba, Warrior of the Sea! I will tell everyone in this submarine that you like children's comics if you continue to ask me to make your wretched rice and grilled fish again!" you said proudly. You put your hands on your hips and glared at Law, thinking that the blackmail worked.
There was a pregnant pause. But then Law did unspeakable. For the first time, he burst out laughing.
The captain was genuinely laughing. A smile adorned his face, with his eyes crinkling up in a crescent shape. This was a big shock to you because you were never met with laughter when it came to Law, only scowls, yelling and threats of violence.
But for some reason, your heart gently fluttered at the sight. To see the captain in such a new light was... interesting to say the least.
The captain collected his breath and then started to talk. "First of all, who's Soba?"
"Tonight's dinner menu," you answered with no hesitation.
The man sighed, "No, you said Soba the Great Warrior of the Sea, but it's Sora." he corrected you.
"Oh fuck." you thought. "My hungry ass was thinking thinking about soba."
"Second of all," the doctor continued, "why do you have my book?"
You were pissed off. Did he not realize that you just tried to blackmail him? "Captain, you do realize that I was trying to blackmail you right?"
Law smirked. "Is that so? Well, it's not blackmail if everyone here knows about it," he said.
You swear your brain stopped working. This whole time your plan failed because everyone but you knew that the captain was into superhero comics. You were about to feed the crew shitty food for the entire week.
Noticing that you weren't responding, the man continued to speak. "Also, Penguin told me that you enjoyed reading through it."
You gritted your teeth. "That fucking snitch, I can never tell him anything!" you muttered.
Law chuckled. "Don't worry, I blackmailed him into telling me what happened. I felt that something happening on my submarine."
So everyone's blackmail worked but yours huh? It's like the gods wanted to see you fail.
Law suddenly put down the comic book and dropped it on your bed. Then the doctor suddenly put his tattooed hand behind your neck and pulled you forward so that his mouth was next to your left ear. His cheek was leaning up against yours and you felt yourself blush and heat up from the contact.
"Why are you so adamant on pushing my buttons (Y/n)-ya?" he whispered in your ear.
You felt his goatee scrape against the bottom side of your cheek and you felt your cheeks heat up even more.
"I-I was just-" you stuttered.
"Do you want to get thoroughly punished? It's like you're asking me to punish you." he interrupted. You felt his hot breath in your ear and you swore that you were going to pass out then and there.
The doctor let go of your neck to place both hands on your shoulders and took a look at you. You couldn't tell if he was angry or not. His eyes showed a different look that you were unfamiliar with. It was like he wanted to devour you and throw you out at the same time. The man started shaking from anger for a brief moment, then he stopped and sighed in defeat.
"Your punishment is to read all 12 volumes of Sora with me," he said, finally breaking the silence.
You blankly stared at your captain. You expected that you were going to be kicked out of the crew. But a comic book club with the captain? that was new. "You want me to what?"
"I'm not repeating myself (Y/n)-ya. Since you wanted my books so bad, you will read it with me and talk about it with me," he ordered.
You started to smile out of confusion. "Hey...you just want to talk about Sora with someone don't you?" you questioned him in a teasing tone.
Law started to scowl as his ears started to turn red. "This isn't about me, I am punishing you for your ridiculous behaviour again," he growled.
You shook your head and laughed. You brushed off the man's hands on your shoulders and started to walk out of the room. "You're so cute, captain. Fine, for once I agree to do your punishment only because I think it's interesting. Come on now, dinner is going to start soon and I still have to make your disgusting rice and grilled fish meal."
"I AM NOT CUTE!" you heard the tattooed doctor shout behind your back. You didn't see it but his ears turned even more red because of your compliment. Nonetheless, the man started to follow you out of the room.
But as soon as you opened the door, you were greeted by Ikkaku standing right in front of you. Her eyes were popping out of her head as she saw both you and the captain in the room. She started giggling, as she put both of her hands on her mouth. "Oh my god."
You rolled your eyes and the captain walked passed you your fellow female crew-mate. "I was just questioning (Y/n)-ya, nothing to get worked up over with." he coolly said as he walked down the hall of the submarine.
"Girl, what happened in there?" she asked giddily.
You side-eyed the girl as you started to walk past her as well. “I tried blackmailing the captain but it didn't work.”
Ikkaku frowned and started to follow you. "Come on, what really happened?" she questioned. But you ignored her words as you started to journey into the kitchen.
You giggled as you walked down the hall. For some reason, Shachi's words replayed in your head.
"Why don't you try getting closer to him?"
A small started to form on your lips. It didn't seem like a bad idea at all.

A week later, [Y/N] came to an empty home from school. After grabbing a snack, she decided to do some reading before starting her homework.
Just as she finished up a chapter, her phone rang from next to her on her bed. When she saw the caller was Spencer, she frowned in worry. Placing the bookmark on the recent page, she closed the book before answering her phone.
"Hey, Spence," she greeted, placing her book on the nightstand before sitting up on the bed again. "Everything okay?"
"Hey, [y/n/n]. Yeah, everything's fine!" Spencer answered rather enthusiastically, which made [Y/N]'s brows furrow.
"Alright, Spence, spill," she said in a playful stern voice and heard Spencer sigh on the other end.
"I may have called you to ask a favor," the brunette answered slowly.
"Sure, what is it?" asked [Y/N].
"Toby's working for Jason and I'm really worried," Spencer explained. "Can you check on him for me, please?"
"Wait, since when did Toby start working for Jason?" [Y/N] questioned, surprised.
"Since this afternoon," Spencer replied.
"You don't sound too happy about it," [Y/N] said.
"How can I be?" Spencer sighed. "For all we know, Jason could be hiding Ian, protecting him, in that creepy house."
"Spence," [Y/N] sighed this time. "I still don't think Jason would want to help his sister's murderer."
"Then, how do you explain the shadow I saw in his house yesterday?" Spencer challenged. "[y/n/n], I was right outside talking to him when I saw someone move upstairs. And, he told me he lived alone. He was clearly lying."
[Y/N] remained silent, processing Spencer's words. She still didn't believe Jason could be helping Ian hide.
However, she did find Jason's sudden return to Rosewood pretty strange. It was true that he didn't owe anyone explanation; yet, his cold demeanor towards her friends confused her because she had thought he had changed after working on Ali's memorial with them.
"Hello? Earth to [y/n/n]?" Spencer interrupted her from her thoughts.
"Sorry, I'm here," [Y/N] replied, shaking her head, hoping to remove her suspicious thoughts regarding Jason. "But, yeah, I'll go check on him."
"Thanks so much, [y/n/n], I owe you one," Spencer breathed out.
"No problem," smiled [Y/N]. "But, I have to ask you something."
"Sure," Spencer replied.
"You literally live right next door to Jason," [Y/N] spoke. "Why not just peak and make sure Toby's okay?"
"I tried," Spencer sighed out. "But, I couldn't see anything."
"It's okay," [Y/N] chuckled. "Alright, I'll check on your defenseless boyfriend and update you soon."
"You're very funny, you know that?" Spencer deadpanned.
"Sorry, I just had to," [Y/N] giggled. "Don't worry too much, alright? I'm sure Toby's okay."
"I'll try," Spencer replied. "Thanks again, [y/n/n]."
"Of course, talk to you later," [Y/N] answered and the two said their goodbyes before hanging up.
…
Once [Y/N] got near the DiLaurentis house, she noticed a shirtless and sweaty Toby first, who seemed to be hard at work with a shovel in his hands. With another few steps, she noticed Jason who was dressed in a tight blue t-shirt and faded denim jeans as he placed some heavy bags in a wheelbarrow.
She took a deep breath in to calm her racing heart as she walked closer to the two men. Her steps must've been quiet because neither Toby nor Jason took notice of her, lost in their work.
"Hello," she greeted, causing the two men to look up at her in surprise.
"Hello, [Y/N]," Jason greeted her back with a smile, standing straight as Toby did the same.
"Hey, [y/n/n], what are you doing here?" Toby asked, resting his hands on top of the shovel.
"A little birdie told me that you got a job so I figured I'd stop by and say congratulations," she replied, hoping her breathy voice didn't give away how nervous she was -- especially with Jason's gaze on her.
"Is that little birdie's name Spencer?" Toby asked, smiling mischievously.
"Of course, not," [Y/N] said, a little too fast for her liking. "Haven't you heard? My friends and I are spending some time apart. Doctor's orders."
"I just saw you guys together recently," Jason replied before Toby could and [Y/N] looked at him. She knew he was talking about the time he caught the girls sneaking out at night a couple of days ago.
[Y/N] looked back at Toby, who had a Cheshire cat grin on his face.
"I wonder if that was before or after the doctor's orders," he commented.
"It- it was before," [Y/N] replied slowly and shifted to look at Jason when she noticed Toby didn't believe her words.
"It's alright, I won't tell anyone," Jason chuckled, holding up his hands. A few moments later, he cleared his throat before asking, "I'm gonna grab a drink. Do you guys want something?"
"I'm okay," Toby replied just as [Y/N] said, "No, thank you."
Jason gave her a smile in return before turning to walk inside the house.
"Alright, [y/n/n], what are you really doing here?" Toby asked quietly once Jason had disappeared inside the house.
[Y/N] sighed and walked closer to Toby, glancing at the closed door of the DiLaurentis house once.
"Spencer sent me," she admitted, making sure to keep her voice as quiet as Toby.
"I had a feeling," Toby sighed.
"She's really worried," [Y/N] said.
"Why is she so scared about me working for Jason?" Toby asked in genuine confusion. "I mean, he's been nothing but nice to me so far."
"She thinks he's hiding Ian," [Y/N] whispered, taking another glance at the shut door.
"That's insane!" Toby said a little loudly when [Y/N] shushed him.
"I don't know what goes through your girlfriend's brain," [Y/N] shrugged playfully.
"What do you think?" Toby asked her suddenly.
"Sorry?" [Y/N] frowned.
"Do you think Jason's suspicious too?" Toby questioned her and [Y/N] dropped her gaze from his for a moment.
"He hasn't really given me a reason to be suspicious about him so far," she finally said, looking up at Toby, who nodded at her in understanding.
Before Toby could reply to her, Jason walked out of the house, carrying out a trash bag with him.
"I would invite you guys in but the place is kind of crazy," he said once he was closer to Toby and [Y/N].
He threw the bag to the side when it opened and several bloodied gauze fell out of it.
[Y/N] stiffened in her spot and her eyes widened at the sight. She looked at Toby, who looked at her, concerned. She had a feeling Toby might've been reconsidering their conversation and to be honest, so was she.
"Uh, I cut myself," Jason explained with an awkward chuckle, rubbing his palms in his jeans.
"Hope you're okay now," [Y/N] said meekly once she was able to get some words out.
"Yeah, it was just a small cut," Jason replied and [Y/N] nodded.
"Well, I should get going now," she said, slowly backing out of the DiLaurentis yard. "It was nice seeing you two. Good night."
"Good night, [Y/N]," Jason answered.
"Thanks for stopping by, [y/n/n]," Toby told her with a smile. "Text me when you get home, okay?"
"Will do," [Y/N] smiled back at him and gave one last wave to Jason before turning around and making her way towards her home.
While walking, she sent a quick text to Spencer, letting the latter know that Toby was okay. She decided to keep the suspicious-bloodied-gauze from Jason's trash to herself as she knew sharing this with Spencer would make her friend go on a dangerous hunt to know what was up with Jason.

sanctuary [3]: kick off
firefighter!roman reigns x azure clarke [oc]
warnings: brief mention of spousal loss, light drinking, lots of football
word count: 5.5k
a/n: hello my beautiful peoplee <3 sorry this update kept getting pushed back, i've been annoyingly busy these past couple weeks. this chapter is a chill one, but i really hope y'all like it! the next update may be delayed a couple days cause my birthday is next weekend and i'll be outsideee 🤪 but yeah, i appreciate y'all always! thanks for reading <3
Azure stood at the kitchen counter, pulling a few dishes from the small box she had finally decided to unpack. It wasn’t much—just some mugs and plates—but it felt like progress. The morning sunlight streamed in through the window, casting a warm glow over the bare kitchen. She leaned against the counter, staring at the mess of cardboard and packing paper, absentmindedly turning over a mug in her hand.
She pulled out a few plates, stacking them on the counter, then paused when her phone rang. With a soft smile, she picked up the phone and answered, cradling it between her ear and shoulder. “Hey, Jade.”
“Hey girl! You settled in yet or still living out of boxes?” Jade teased, her voice bringing a bit of comfort to Azure’s morning.
“Definitely still in the 'living out of boxes' phase,” Azure laughed lightly. “I’m unpacking the kitchen right now, but it’s dragging.”
“Ugh, I hate unpacking,” Jade groaned. “But you doing okay? I’m sorry I didn't call sooner, my father in law’s birthday was this past weekend, and you know how Reggie is when it comes to going to his parents’ house.”
A soft smile spread across Azure’s face, “It’s okay sis.” Her teeth captured her bottom lip in contemplation. “I’ve actually met a few people,” Azure admitted, trying to sound casual, but she knew Jade would pick up on any hesitation in her voice.
“Oh? Do tell.”
“Just some neighbors. They helped me move some boxes.”
“That’s good!”
“Yeah, they’re... really nice. Two guys, twins, Jimmy and Jey. Invited me to a cookout later on today.”
“Wait, twins? And they already invited you to a cookout?” Jade teased, a playful edge to her tone. “That sounds promising.”
“It’s not like that,” Azure laughed. “They’re really nice but definitely married. And then… there’s their cousin,” she hesitated. “Roman.”
“Okay…” Jade’s voice trailed. Azure swore she could hear a hint of a smile as Jade continued. “Tell me more about this Roman guy.”
“We talked a little. He welcomed me to the neighborhood, but I think I might’ve rambled. I was telling him about my day at work, how Dr. Rollins pulled me aside because I was running late.”
Jade hummed thoughtfully. “And?”
“And, well… I don’t know. Roman just seemed kind of tense when I mentioned Dr. Rollins. I might’ve made things awkward.”
“Girl, you did not make it awkward. You were just trying to spark up a conversation, right? You haven’t talked to new people in a while… it’s going to feel a little weird. But that doesn’t mean it was bad.” Jade’s voice softened, offering the kind of encouragement Azure needed. “Maybe he’s just one of those quiet shy guys, you know?”
“Maybe,” Azure said, biting her lip. “It’s just—I don’t know. It felt like I was rambling, and he didn’t say much.”
“Azure, stop,” Jade said firmly. “You’re doing great. You’re starting to meet people, and that’s good. Just because it wasn’t a perfect conversation doesn’t mean you blew it.”
Azure sighed, knowing Jade was right but still feeling that small nagging doubt. “Yeah, I guess.”
“And what’s this about the cookout?” Jade’s tone shifted, playful again. “Are you going?”
“I don’t know if I should. Jey and Jimmy invited me, but I feel like it might be too soon, like I don’t really know anyone well enough to go.”
“That’s exactly why you should go! You’re invited, Azure, and it’s a cookout. You’ll meet more people, and it’ll give you a chance to see Roman again. Maybe even smooth out any awkwardness from yesterday. Come on, you gotta go.”
Azure leaned against the counter, cracking a few of her knuckles. “I don’t know…”
“No ma’am. No excuses. You’re going. Next time you see the twins, tell them you’re coming,” Jade insisted.
After a long pause, Azure sighed with a small smile. “If I see them, I’ll let them know I might be there.”
“I guess that’s better than nothing. You’ll have a good time, I promise.” Azure heard Jade exhale a deep breath before she continued. “Azure...” Jade’s voice softened, “I know it’s scary. You’ve been through so much, and it makes sense that you’d want to protect yourself. But you can’t close yourself off forever. You deserve happiness, too. And maybe that happiness is waiting for you in this new place, with these new people.”
Azure’s eyes stung with tears. She hadn’t realized how much she needed to hear that. “It’s just... hard. Every time I think I’m ready to start over, it feels like…” A lump starts to form in her throat. “Like I’ll forget about him.”
“You’re not going to forget about Derrick,” Jade said firmly. “You’re honoring him by finding a way to live again.”
Azure swallowed, her emotions swirling. “Thank you for that sis.”
“Of course girl,” Jade said, her voice lightening. “And remember, I’m always here if you need to talk, okay?”
“Thanks, Jade. I really appreciate it.”
After they hung up, Azure looked at the small kitchen box she hadn’t quite finished unpacking. Jade was right; she needed to put herself out there, even if it felt strange and unfamiliar. Jade’s words echoed in her mind, but the fear remained. She had come here to start over, but every step toward something new felt like she was leaving pieces of herself behind. She wanted to blend into the newness of this place, to feel the laughter, the warmth, the life around her. But what if it hurt too much?
What if joy felt like a betrayal?
Could she really open herself up again?
The thought of Roman tugged at her, though she quickly brushed it aside.
Azure strolled out to the front porch. With a sigh, she pocketed her phone and made her way to the car; the gentle warmth of the Pensacola morning wrapping around her like a light blanket. The street was quiet, a slight breeze rustling the trees overhead as she unlocked the car and leaned in to retrieve a bag of things she had left the day before.
As she pulled the bag out, she heard the familiar rumble of a car engine from across the street. Glancing up, she noticed Jimmy pulling into the driveway at Roman’s house. He hopped out first, his usual energetic self, followed by a woman she recognized but had never formally met. Jimmy’s wife, she assumed, was stunning, her dark hair framing her face perfectly as she moved with an easy confidence.
Jimmy noticed Azure first. He waved enthusiastically before leaning over to say something to his wife, who looked in Azure’s direction and smiled.
“Aye, Azure!” Jimmy called out, his voice warm and friendly as always.
Azure froze, caught in his enthusiasm. She smiled politely and gave a small wave. “Hey, Jimmy.”
Without missing a beat, Jimmy nudged the woman, and the two of them started walking across the street toward her. “Thought we’d come say wassup before we head inside,” he flashed her a grin.
“Hey, I’m Naomi. We haven’t officially met, but I’ve seen you around.” Naomi smiled brightly, her energy as vibrant as her husband’s. Azure nodded, feeling a bit of the tension ease as she introduced herself. “Yeah, I’ve seen you, too. It’s nice to finally meet you.”
Naomi’s eyes sparkled, and she gave a quick glance toward Roman’s house. “We’re getting ready for the cookout at Jey’s, and Jimmy mentioned you might be coming?”
Azure shifted her weight slightly, unsure how to respond. “Yeah...I was thinking about it.”
Jimmy chuckled, nudging Naomi with his elbow. “What’d I tell you? She’s still on the fence.”
Naomi swatted his arm, turning her attention back to Azure. “You should come. It’s gonna be fun—nothing too big or formal. And Jey always makes sure everyone feels welcome.”
Azure bit her lip, feeling a mix of nervousness and uncertainty. “I appreciate the invite. I guess I just feel... out of place since I don’t really know anyone yet.”
“You won’t be out of place at all.” Jimmy chimed in again, his tone playful but sincere. “We all family. Besides, if you ever need someone to talk to, you got us.”
Naomi seemed to sense her internal debate. “Hey, no pressure. If you decide to come, we’d be happy to see you. If not, there’s always the next one.”
Azure glanced down at the bag in her hands, weighing her options. She didn’t want to keep feeling like she was isolating herself, not after Jade had basically given her an entire pep talk over the phone.Yes, it was just a cookout, just an afternoon with her neighbors. But it was more than that. It was a choice, a small crack in the armor she’d built around herself, a chance to remember how to belong again. Finally, she took a breath and looked back up at Naomi and Jimmy. “You know what, I’ll come. I could use some fun.”
“Great!” Naomi’s face lit up. “You won’t regret it, I promise.”
“Yeah, we’ll have a good time,” Jimmy added with a wink. “Glad you’re coming.”
Azure felt a weight lift off her shoulders. It wasn’t much, but agreeing to the cookout felt like a step forward. “Thanks y’all, I’m looking forward to it.”
“Here, give me your number.” Naomi said, pulling out her phone. “That way, if you need anything or want to come over early, you can text me.”
Azure quickly rattled off her number, feeling more at ease while Naomi typed it in and smiled.
“Alright, we’ll let you get back to it,” Jimmy said, giving her a quick wave before heading back to Roman’s with Naomi.
“See you later!” Naomi called over her shoulder with a friendly smile.
Azure watched them go, feeling lighter as she stood by her car, a small smile tugging at her lips.
Roman stood in the doorway of Audrey’s room, watching her small figure nestled under the covers. The soft rise and fall of her breathing filled the quiet space. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he leaned against the doorframe, taking in the sight of his daughter. She always slept so peacefully, a contrast to the whirlwind of emotions and responsibilities that often swirled around them.
He took another sip of coffee from his mug, savoring the warmth. His mind drifted back to his conversation with Azure the night before. She’d been so open, talking about her day at work and how Seth had checked in on her. Her words replayed in his mind: “He pulled me into his office just to make sure I was adjusting okay.”
A familiar tension crept into his chest, his grip tightening around the mug. Rollins. Even just hearing his name brought up old resentments, ones he hadn’t realized were still buried so close to the surface. But this wasn’t Azure’s fault; she didn’t know the history, and she definitely didn’t need to bear the weight of it.
The sound of soft footsteps broke his thoughts, and Roman looked down just as Audrey appeared at the doorway, rubbing her eyes.
“Mornin’, angel,” he murmured, setting his mug down on the side table. He scooped her into his arms, her tiny body warm and heavy with sleep, her head nestled against his shoulder.
“Morning, daddy,” she mumbled, still half-asleep.
He ran a gentle hand over her back. “Did you sleep okay?”
She nodded, her cheek pressed against his shirt. “I dreamed about Uncle Jey’s dog. He was chasing Kitty around the house.” A little giggle escaped her, and the sound brought a lightness to his chest he didn’t realize he’d needed.
“Oh yeah?” Roman chuckled, hugging her tighter. “You think Kitty’s ready for the cookout today?”
Audrey perked up, her eyes brightening as she pulled back to look at him. “Are we going to Uncle Jey’s?”
“Mhm. Uncle Jim and Auntie Naomi are comin’ over soon to grab some stuff for the party. You’ll get to see everyone.”
Audrey wriggled out of his arms, a new energy lighting her face as she ran back into her room, ready to find the perfect outfit for the big day.
A smile still lingered on his lips as he made his way downstairs, only to hear a knock at the back door. He set down his coffee as Jimmy strolled in, his familiar grin lighting up the kitchen, Naomi right behind him.
“Morning big uce!” Jimmy called, already heading toward the fridge.
“Morning, Roman,” Naomi added warmly, giving him a quick hug before playfully swatting Jimmy’s hand away from the orange juice.
Jimmy leaned on the island, his grin unfazed. “Thought we’d swing by early, help you grab the cooler and some extra chairs for later.”
Roman nodded toward the garage door. “Should have everything in there, but let me know if you need an extra set of hands.”
“I’ll handle it,” Jimmy said, sauntering toward the garage.
Naomi took a seat on one of the barstools, resting her elbows on the counter as she looked at him with a curious smile. “You ready for today?”
“After all this work I’ve been doin’, I definitely need a break.” he admitted, but his thoughts wandered back to Azure, and the tug of their conversation lingered in his chest.
Naomi’s eyes sparkled knowingly. “Oh, by the way, Azure’s coming to the cookout.”
Roman looked up, surprised. “She is?”
Naomi’s grin grew wider, clearly enjoying his reaction. “Yep. She was hesitant, but I convinced her. Got her number and everything.”
He exhaled, trying to act indifferent, but his gaze softened. He hadn’t meant to come across as distant last night; he was just... caught off guard. The last thing he wanted was to make her uncomfortable.
Naomi must’ve noticed his thoughtful silence because she placed a comforting hand on his arm. “Want me to help Audrey get ready?”
“Yeah, that’d be great,” Roman said, the slight edge in his voice fading away. “She’ll be excited to see you.”
As Naomi left, Jimmy returned with the cooler and a few chairs. He noticed Roman’s thoughtful expression and raised an eyebrow. “I was gone for two seconds, uce. What got you lookin’ like that?”
Roman shook his head. “Talked to Azure last night. She mentioned Seth.”
“Rollins?” Jimmy’s face shifted, his casual demeanor replaced with a more serious look.
“Yeah,” Roman murmured, the bitterness creeping back. “Can’t believe he’s still tryna charm his way around. She doesn’t know, though. She doesn’t know what went down with him… with the chief.”
Jimmy rubbed his chin, his gaze sharp. “You still holdin’ onto that?”
Roman didn’t answer immediately, instead staring at the floor. His muscles tightened with a memory he wished he could bury deeper. "It’s hard not to hold onto it," he said quietly. "You know what almost happened. That mess with the chief… my career was on the line. All because of him."
“Yeah, I remember.” Jimmy grimaced, the weight of the past hanging in the air. “But come on, that was years ago. You made it through. Hell, you got promoted after all that.”
“I know, but it wasn’t easy.” Roman shook his head. “I had to work twice as hard to get back in their good graces. The way Rollins played it, he could’ve ruined me. I can’t just forget that.”
Jimmy crossed his arms, leaning back against the counter. “Look, I get it. Seth fucked you over, no doubt. But that’s his problem now, uce. You moved on, and you been solid ever since. He don’t get to mess with your head every time his name comes up.”
Roman met his cousin’s gaze, his grip on the mug loosening. “It’s just… hearin’ her talk about him like that— like he’s some kind of good guy? I can’t stand it.
Jimmy grinned, a playful glint in his eyes. “You’re protective of her already, huh?”
“Not like that.” Roman’s voice was defensive, though he felt a flicker of something he couldn’t name. “She’s new. Tryna be neighborly, s’all.”
“Sure, uce.” Jimmy clapped a hand on his shoulder, bringing Roman back to the moment. “Just remember, today’s about family. Rollins can’t mess with that.”
A soft sigh fell from Roman’s lips, finally feeling a bit of the tension drain away. He nodded, letting Jimmy’s words settle over him.
As Jimmy took the cooler outside, Roman took a long breath, listening to the house come alive around him—the sound of Audrey’s voice drifting down the stairs, Naomi’s laughter mixing with it, and the faint hum of the van outside. Today was supposed to be about family, about finding peace in their little corner of the world.
But as the day unfolded, he couldn’t shake the feeling that seeing Azure again would bring more than he was prepared for.
The late afternoon sun bathed Jey’s backyard in a warm, golden light as the cookout got underway. Azure felt the humid warmth settle on her skin as the smoky, savory aroma of grilled ribs and burgers filled her senses. The laughter and familiar scent made the yard feel like a haven she hadn’t realized she needed. Picnic tables were scattered around, some with folding chairs and coolers brimming with drinks nearby. The end-of-summer air mixed with the distant sounds of football from the TV inside, made for the perfect backdrop to the Saturday afternoon. Kids ran across the grass, their voices blending into the hum of the adults chatting around them.
Azure arrived a little after two o'clock, gripping the strap of the small bag that hung over her shoulder. Her steps were careful as she approached the yard. Her eyes scanned the familiar faces of Jimmy and Jey, who were already loud and welcoming, laughing as they teased each other near the grill. Watching Jimmy and Jey bicker lightheartedly made her smile, but a small pang of loneliness crept in, a reminder of the family gatherings she missed back home.
Roman, she noticed, was there too. He leaned against the wooden fence a bit further back, but still near his cousins with a beer in his hand. As soon as Roman caught sight of her, he offered a small, friendly smile. It was a polite acknowledgment—nothing more, nothing less—but enough to make her stomach flip. She smiled back, feeling his eyes linger on her for a moment longer than needed, but he didn’t approach. She quickly moved to Naomi, who was arranging plates and utensils on the table.
“Hey, girl!” Naomi greeted her warmly, her bright smile infectious. “You made it! Jey was starting to think we’d have to send Jimmy over to drag you out the house.”
Azure laughed, feeling some of the tension melt away. “Ixnay the wellness check y’all, I‘m here in the flesh.”
“There you go!” Jey happily chimed in from the grill, flipping a row of burgers with exaggerated precision. “Stick around—it's gon’ be a great time.”
Jimmy sidled up beside the women, grinning ear to ear. “And don’t forget the game! It’s the best part of the cookout. You watch football?”
“Here he goes.” Naomi shook her head smiling while she finished setting up.
Azure smiled sheepishly. “I might be a little into it. I usually watch a lot of the games with my dad.”
“Aye, that's what we like to hear!” Jey exclaimed, transferring some of the food off of the grill and into an aluminum pan. “We take football very seriously ‘round here.”
Naomi rolled her eyes, though the fondness in her voice was undeniable. “That’s one way to put it. These two are like little kids whenever football's on.”
As they continued to talk, Azure felt a little more at ease. She enjoyed the lighthearted banter between the twins and Naomi, appreciating how they welcomed her. Naomi, especially, seemed attuned to Azure’s hesitance and kept things easygoing.
Roman, who had been watching them from a few feet away, finally stepped forward, offering a drink. “Hey, Azure,” he said quietly, though his voice carried easily over the noise. “Glad you could make it.”
Azure looked up, meeting his gaze. “I almost didn’t.” She admitted, accepting the drink with a gentle smile. “Y’know, your family is very persuasive. But this,” she gestured to the yard, “It’s nice.”
“They are.” He gave a firm nod in agreement, though his tone remained soft. “And I get that. Sometimes, meetings’ new people feels… complicated.” His words carried a weight she understood, a vulnerability that was subtle but genuine.
“Yeah,” Azure replied, pausing as she gathered her thoughts. “Especially when the past tends to follow you wherever you go.
Roman’s eyebrows rose just a bit. “Yeah, exactly.” There was a moment of silence between them, but it didn’t feel uncomfortable. Instead, it felt like an unspoken understanding, a quiet space where words weren’t needed.
“So, yesterday-”
“Man what kind of play was THAT?!” The sound of Jimmy shouting at the TV drifted over from the back door of the house, interrupting Roman.
Azure chuckled nervously, nodding in the direction of the commotion.
“They weren’t playing when they said they took football pretty seriously, huh?”
Roman let out a small laugh, glancing toward the house. “Oh yeah, it’s basically a family requirement. You’re either all-in or on the sidelines, and there’s no in-between. But-”
“I think I’m gonna head inside, the game sounds like it’s getting pretty good.” Azure gently tapped her fingers against the glass bottle of her beer, cutting Roman off.
“Right,” he replied, her heart racing slightly as she stepped away from him, grateful for the excuse to avoid the conversation. I’ll see you in there?”
“Yeah, definitely,” Roman cleared his throat, watching her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken.

Inside the house, the game was in full swing, and Azure eventually found herself in the living room, drawn to the TV. She smiled as she watched the players race down the field, her heart speeding up with the game’s intensity.
A little girl soon wandered over to her, eyes wide with curiosity as she plopped down beside Azure on the couch. "Are you watching the game too?" The girl asked, her voice small but full of interest.
Azure looked up, recognizing her immediately. Roman’s daughter. "I sure am.” Azure grinned. “Do you like football?"
Audrey nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah! Uncle Jimmy and Uncle Jey always watch. Daddy watches sometimes too."
She hadn’t even noticed the little girl mimicking her movements, sitting cross-legged on the couch and watching the game with the same focused expression. It was hard not to smile at the sight.
"I bet your uncles get really into it, huh? They’re over there shouting louder than the TV." Azure smiled, her eyes flicking towards the open back door where the twins were already deep in a loud debate over a recent play.
Audrey giggled, her eyes lighting up. “They do! Uncle Jimmy says the refs are ‘blind as bats,’ but I don’t know what that means. And Uncle Jey is always yelling.” Azure laughed as Audrey went on about her time with her uncles, with a mix of childlike intensity and joy.
Azure noticed Roman from the corner of her eye, catching his gaze for a brief second before looking away. Her heart raced, the conversation from the previous evening still lingered between them, but the last thing she wanted to do was embarrass herself even more.
“Aye, uce! You just gonna stand there and look moody all afternoon, or you gonna go inside with everybody?” Jey yelled across the yard.
“See.” Audrey added, causing Azure to to suppress a laugh.
Roman chuckled, shaking his head as he made his way over to the group. As he settled onto the arm of the couch next to Audrey, he glanced at Azure, the playful spark in her eyes meeting his own.
“Think you’re stealin’ our cheerleader here.”
Azure raised an eyebrow. “Maybe she just knows a good team when she sees one.” She glanced down at Audrey, who giggled and nodded in agreement.
“Oh, I see how it is,” Roman said with mock offense. “Guess I’m just the backup then?”
“Looks like it,” Azure shot back, a glimmer of humor in her eyes. She relaxed against the couch, her hands resting on her lap as she kept a slight distance.
“Careful, Roman. You might lose your spot for good if she keeps this up,” Jimmy teased, settling in his own seat as he glanced at the game on the TV.
“I don’t know, uce.” Roman rested his arm on the back of the couch. “I think I can handle the competition.”
•────────────────•
Throughout the afternoon, Azure caught him watching her more often than she expected. Their eyes would meet and there he’d be—his gaze lingering on her, studying her. It’s just curiosity. She told herself. Just the same polite interest people held when meeting someone new, yet there was an intensity to it she couldn’t ignore.
As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, casting long shadows across the yard, the cookout started to wind down, with people moving inside to clean up or grab their last plates of food. Azure decided to stay behind in the kitchen to help clean up some of the dishes. She saw Roman out in the yard, gathering up plates and empty cans, her eyes following him as he stepped through the sliding glass door and joined her at the counter. The sound of clinking dishes filled the silence between them for a few moments before Roman spoke.
"Thanks for helpin’ out," he said, his voice low but sincere.
"No problem. It’s the least I could do." Azure looked up, setting a plate back down in the sink.
“You mentioned Seth Rollins yesterday," he started, his jaw tightening slightly at the name.
“I didn’t mean to bring up anything uncomfortable...”
“It’s fine,” Roman paused, drumming his fingertips on the marble counter before continuing. “Let’s just say we had some...disagreements in the past.”
Azure’s gaze softened as she watched him, noting the tension that crept into his eyes. “You don’t have to tell me if it’s too much,” she said gently, sensing the weight behind his words.
“It’s not that,” He stared down at the plate in his hand, his voice measured. “I just don’t want you gettin’ blindsided by him if he decides to get involved in anything…beyond work.”
She furrowed her brows, curiosity blending with concern. “Involved how?”
Roman lowered his voice before leaning against the counter, facing her. “Seth’s got a habit of getting close to people, making them trust him, and then…things go south fast if he doesn’t get his way.” His gaze flickered to hers, a shadow passing through his eyes before he glanced down.
“Sounds…complicated,” Azure chose her words with caution. She could sense this was something he didn’t open up about easily.
He shrugged, though a glimpse of hurt still lingered in his eyes. “Just be careful. I’m pretty sure you can handle yourself, but he’s… persuasive. And I wouldn’t want you caught up in his web.”
She nodded slowly.
Their eyes met, and for a moment, the room felt smaller, the noise from outside fading into the background. Roman’s gaze softened as he looked at her, a hint of something unreadable in his expression. “Just… watch out for yourself, alright?”
Azure’s voice softened in response. “I will.”
The intensity in Roman’s his expression faded to something warmer. “I have to admit,” he said, crossing his arms casually, “I didn’t expect you to be such a football fan. You might even give Jimmy and Jey a run for their money.”
Azure laughed, a sound that seemed to light up her whole face. “I don’t know about that. Those two are intense,” she replied, glancing toward the yard where the twins were laughing loudly and nudging each other as they sat at one of the tables, sipping their beers. “I just grew up around it, so it sort of stuck.”
“Oh yeah?” Roman raised an eyebrow, looking intrigued. “Your family must be football people then?”
“That’s definitely an understatement,” Azure nodded. “Every Sunday was a huge thing growing up. My dad’s a big fan of it, and I’d just sit there with him, getting into the game and the whole atmosphere.” Her eyes softened a little, lost in thought. “I guess it just… reminds me of home.”
Roman watched her carefully, noting the brief flicker of nostalgia in her eyes. “Well, you came across the right people,” he said, gesturing to the yard. “Between the twins and Audrey, they’re all in serious need of someone who actually knows what’s happening on the field. I swear Audrey’s been pickin’ up their bad habits.”
Azure chuckled, shaking her head. “She’s already got a bit of Jey’s attitude in her cheer, I can tell.”
He glanced back at the living room where Audrey was napping. "So you’ve converted my little girl to your team, huh?" he teased, still leaning casually against the counter.
Azure raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips. “I can’t help it if Audrey has good taste. Besides, she was all in after a few plays.”
“I noticed.” A bit of pride evident in his smile. “But I can't help but feel a little jealous that you stole her away from me today."
Azure placed a hand on her chest, playfully taking offense. “I would never! Maybe you should join us and see what it’s like to be on the winning side for once.”
Roman raised his hands in defense, playing along. “Oh, it’s like that, huh? Careful, you might just end up recruitin’ me to your team.”
Azure’s smirk softened, her eyes holding his for a second longer than she’d intended. She liked this playful side of him, a glimpse into something that felt less guarded. “Not sure you’re up for the challenge,” she shot back.
Roman chuckled, his usually stoic demeanor breaking with the smallest of smiles. “Tell you what,” he said, reaching into his pocket for his phone, “maybe next game day, you can give me some pointers. Since you’re so sure I’d lose.”
Her eyes widened slightly, the offer surprising her. She paused, then nodded, taking her phone out too. “Alright, but don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she said, her fingers hovering over her screen. “And if Audrey sticks to my team, you’ll know why.”
Handing his phone to her, Roman watched as she keyed in her number, a spark of warmth flickering between them. When she handed it back, he gave her a small nod, glancing down at the new contact saved on his screen. “Guess I’ll just have to work twice as hard to win her back,” he said, his voice low, but his smile hinted at a more personal admission.
Azure gave him a playful side-eye, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

Dear Brother I know I said I’d write to you sooner, but I keep finding it hard to put everything into words. I feel a lot worse than I let on, and it dredged up so much I’d been burying. I couldn’t take it anymore—the control, the way everything's been twisted to make me feel guilty. I thought putting distance would help clear my mind, but the past just won’t stay in the past. I hate feeling like this, and knowing that there’s nothing I can do to change it. Oh, and about that person I met a while back…it’s been…really good, actually. It’s comforting and freeing in ways I hadn’t imagined. And I didn’t realize how much I needed that until now. I think this might be something real, and that thought scares me but also excites me. You two would be the best of friends, I know it. I just wish you could be down here with me. I love you, always.

Chapter 8
“So what is everyone doing today,” Tyler asked, taking a seat next to you at the table. Most of the team had already finished their breakfast.
“Dani and I have claimed the gaming system.” Boone stated, “but if anyone wants to join us..we can split into teams!”
“I want to send up the drone, get some shots of the area.” Lily said.
“I am going fishing!” Dexter added with a smile. “I see there's a pier a few miles down the road. Maybe I can bring some fish back for dinner.”
Everyone cheered at that idea and started clearing the table to go about their day.
“What about you?” Tyler looked at you with a soft smile, “What would you like to do today?”
“Stroll on the beach, collect seashells, play in the waves a little.” you smile.
“And build a sand castle.” Tyler added with a grin. “Let's do it!”
“Really?” you asked, “You don't think it's boring or stupid or anything?”
“Darling, I'd do anything with you, and to be honest, that sounds like the perfect day.”
“Hey, Y/N..come with me to the RV for a minute?” Lily asked.
“Sure.” you stand and place a hand on Tyler's shoulder and a light kiss on his cheek, “I'll be back in a minute.”
“Okay.” he squeezed your hand and watches as you walked away, lost in thought.
“Earth to Tyler...” Boone was saying.
“Huh? What?” Tyler looked at his friend.
“I said Dani and I are going to grill some burgers for lunch. Lily is coming back for lunch, but Dexter said he wants to grab a sandwich or something at the prier. I was asking what you and Y/N are doing for lunch so we know how many burgers to grill.” Boone grinned, “But you weren't paying any attention to me.”
“Sorry.” Tyler apologized. “We'll probably come back here for lunch. We are just going to be right down there.” he motioned to a stretch of beach that was just out the front door.
“So...I hear you and Tyler are spending the day at the beach,” Lily flashed a smile, leading you into the RV. She rummaged though some boxes and pulled out a bright red bikini. “Here, you can have this...go knock his socks off.”
“Oh..I don't..I don't know about that.” You blushed.
“Girl...go for it!” she winked. “You can even change in here and just completely surprise him once you are there.”
“Thank you.” You smile ducking into the tiny RV bathroom and replacing your bra and underwear with the bikini before slipping a dress back on.
A few minutes later you and Lily come back in the house laughing, causing Tyler to raise an eyebrow, “What's so funny?” he looked at you confused.
“You'll find out later.” you wink at him and Lily giggles.
As everyone parts ways to go about their day, Tyler collects a blanket and you got a few towels before heading down to the beach.
You loved the feeling of the shifting sand under your feet. You know as the sun rises and the temperature heats up the sand will soon become hot, but now, in the early morning hours, it was a just starting to warm up from the cool night air.
“You okay?” you asked, grabbing Tyler's hand as he stumbled and grabbed his leg.
“Yeah, I am fine. Just lost my footing a little.” he gave you a smile, not wanting to ruin this perfect day. Truth was, he would be okay once they got off of the shifting sand, but right now, it was hell on his leg.
You grab his hand and squeeze it tightly, “We can go back if you want.” you offer.
“Never.” he smiled, “I am looking forward to giving you the date you deserve.”
Gradually you both make your way down close to the water's edge and lay the blanket down, tucking the corners into the sand and laying the towels out.
“How are you feeling?” Tyler asks, gently placing a hand on your left side.
“Sore, but okay.” you give a smile, “How about you?”
“Nothing that a little time at the beach won't fix.” he pulls you into a kiss, then takes your hand, “How about we go for a little walk, look for those shells you wanted to find?” he asked, “I hear first thing in the morning is the best time.”
“Well, actually....the best time for shells is after a storm. More shells wash ashore during a storm...but morning would be second best.” you grin as you two walk along the shore line, the waves washing over your feet.
“Oh there's one!” you see a big conch shell rolling in the waves.
“I got it.” Tyler reached for the shell as the waves pulled it just out of his reach.
“Ah, you missed it!” You hurry and reach down to try and catch the shell, only to have the waves pull it out father.
“Oh, well...maybe we'll find another one.” you give in, a hint of disappointment in your voice.
“I'm getting you that shell.” Tyler chased the shell further out into deeper water and made another grab for it, losing his balance and falling into a wave, his head disappearing under the wave for a moment.
“TYLER!” You screamed, “you okay?”
“I got the shell!” He grinned, holding it up.
You push though the waves and run out to the waist deep water where he was and grabbed his arm, “Oh my God, Tyler, are you okay?” you practically were yelling at him.
“Yeah, I am okay. The wave gave me a softer landing.”
“You scared me to death.” you grab his hand and help him stand, “I was afraid you hurt your ribs again falling.”
“I am okay.” he confirmed handing you the shell, “for my beautiful lady.”
“Thank you.” you kiss him softly and hold his hand back to shore. Tyler stops at the blankets and slides his wet pants off, revealing a pair of dark blue swim trunks, then he tried to pull his shirt up over his head grimacing in pain. “What's wrong?” you ask concerned.
“I am trying to get this shirt off.” he sighed, “but it's wet and sticking.” he gasped.
“Here, let me help.” you help him pull the shirt over his head and your eyes immediately go to the bruises covering his back and chest. You carefully run your hand over his chest “I am so sorry.” you whisper.
“Darling, there's nothing to be sorry for. I would rather deal with this pain and these injuries then see you get hurt.” he leaned over and placed a tender kiss on your lips, “I owe you my life. You saved my life that night.” he whispered, “I'll never forget that.”
“You saved my life that night as well.” you whisper.
“And I'd do it all over again.” he leaned in closer to you and captured your lips in a long slow deep kiss.
“Do you need to go back to the house and change?” he asked.
You smile at him, stepping back a few paces, “No...I think I'll change here.” you slide your dress up over your head, revealing the red bikini and heard Tyler suck in a breath.
“Wow...” he whispers.
“You like?” you asked.
“No...” Tyler shook his head, “I don't like it.”
“Oh...” you look a bit taken back.
“I love it!” he grinned, pulling you towards him for a kiss.
You grimace and he pulls back, “Sorry...I didn't mean to hurt you.” he leans over to look at the stab wound, “Is it bothering you?” he asked, softly.
“Little..but not bad.”
Tyler carefully runs his hand down your side and then he notices all the bruises and scars running across your stomach and up your back. “My God, Y/N...I didn't know it was this bad.” anger flashed in his eyes. “He did all this to you?” he asked.
You nodded, “Yeah, but let's not talk about him, okay?”
“Alright, Darling.” he kissed her softly. “What shall we do next?”
“Take a mid morning nap on the beach?” you grin, sitting down on the blanket and stretching out. At least a little rest.
Your side was starting to bother you, and you were sure Tyler was in pain by the look on his face, even if he denied it.
“Sounds good to me.” you laid down next to you and wrapped his arms around you. As you were staring out across the ocean, he was looking at you with a grin.
“What?” you turn towards him with a smile, catching him staring at you out the corner of your eye.
“You're just so beautiful.” he whispered, kissing your lips softly, trailing his lips from your mouth, down your neck.
“Tyler...” you moan as he tenderly brushes his hand across your stomach and pausing at your bikini top.
“Want me to stop?” he asked, desire deep in his eyes.
“What if someone sees us?” you ask.
He glanced up towards the house, “We are far enough down the beach. They can't see us from the house and no one else is around. “Hold on.” he held you close to him and rolled off the blanket, laying directly on the sand and the blanket now covering you. “Better?”
You nod, “Yeah, but we shouldn't be doing this, not with your broken ribs.”
“My hands aren't broken.” he grins, pressing his lips firmly against yours in a long deep kiss. “If you want me to stop, tell me now.” he moaned, ducking his head under the blanket to remove the bikini top.
“Don't stop...”you moaned, feeling his lips and hands caressing your body.
* * * * *
“Hey Boone!” Dani called, looking at her phone.
“What's up?”
“I was just checking our YouTube feed. Someone posted videos and photos of us leaving the hotel and picking up Ty and Y/N at the hospital.”
“Yeah..we got about a million followers. They probably were interested in how T was doing. We never did update them.”
“Maybe...” Dani said thinking, “But they keep asking questions about our whereabouts. It just doesn't seem right to me. Our fans know we are chasing the storms, and if we aren't, that's our private time. They don't ask a lot about where we are if we aren't chasing. This person has posted several times a day.”
“You're right. That is suspicious.” Boone frowned. “Has anyone said anything about us being down here?”
“No. Everyone just assumes that we went back to Arkansas to rest up for a bit.” Dani informed him.
“Good.” Boone nodded.
“Should we tell Tyler?”
“No, that's just going to cause a lot of worry for no reason. As long as no one suspects we are here, then let's not worry them about it.”
Dani agreed, “I'll keep an eye on it and make sure no one discloses our whereabouts if they do see us.”
“Maybe I should do a quick video, give people a heads up?” Boone suggested.
“Yeah...good idea.”
Boone fixed his phone and made sure nothing was in the background to give away his whereabouts and then began, “Hey Hey fan base! I know we have been flying under the radar lately, but as you know, a lot has happened in a short amount of time. Listen, I need ya help. One of our team members has a crazy guy after them. It's personal business and I don't want to get into details, but we haven't had much luck with the police. That's why we've been laying low. Tyler and the team are all doing good, but listen, if you do happen to see us out and about anywhere, please don't disclose our location...for the sake of the team. We'll update you when this situation has been solved. Thank you fans! We love you!”
The sound of the door opening caused them to look up. Boone smiled, seeing Tyler and Y/N come though the door, hand in hand. Both of their hair was ruffled and they were covered in sand, breathing hard with their faces were flushed.
“Hey guys, I am just about to start the burgers.” Boone called, trying his best not to look at the couple. He wanted to say something smart, but he also didn't want to embarrass either of them.
“Yeah, I bet they've worked up an appetite.” Dani giggled.
“We are hungry.” Tyler shot them a look, “Thanks Boone. We're going to take a shower and then we'll be out.”
“Hmm hmm...no problem.” Boone held his laughter in until Tyler and Y/N had went into their room.
“Whoa boy, I bet they're going to have an active week.” he giggled and Dani playfully slapped his head, “Oh hush! What if they hear you!”
“I'll start the shower for us.” Tyler states, kissing you softly, “You wanna head back down to the beach or stay here?”
“Right now that bed is looking awfully inviting. I vote we stay here and watch a movie after lunch.” she said.
“That sounds like the perfect ending to a perfect day.”
You pull out your pajamas and a pair of shorts for Tyler before meeting him in the bathroom. He had already stripped down and was getting in the shower when he extended his hand towards you, “Join me?” he asks.
You let the bikini fall to the floor and enter the shower, where Tyler pulls you into another long slow kiss. He runs his hands slowly over your body, kissing every scar and every bruise as if he could kiss away the hurt.
“You're beautiful and I love you so much.” he muttered against your skin, moving his lips up to your neck and reclaiming your lips as his own.
Boone, Dani and Lily were already eating the burgers by the time you and Tyler finally emerged from the bedroom. All three of them passed knowing looks.
“Your burgers are over there by the grill. We did save you some.” Boone smiled.
“Oh, and don't worry about anything that might of happened on the beach today.” Lily grinned, “I didn't fly my drone over that way.”
“Oh my God, we didn't think of that!” you muttered into Tyler's ear and he laughed.
“So...um...how's the water?” Boone asked as you guys sat down with the burgers.
“Perfect.” you say.
“Well, it was a bit salty.” Tyler grinned.
“And there was a shark.” you grinned, looking over at Tyler.
“I bet that shark's name was Tyler, wasn't it?” Dani laughed and the rest of the team joined in.
“Yeah..it was...it was.” you blushed.
Once lunch was finished, Tyler stood and took your plate and his into the kitchen. “Y/N and I are going to lay down for a bit and watch a movie. When Dexter gets back, tell him we expect fish for dinner!”
“I'll help make something. Don't worry.” you tell Dani and Lily as Tyler leads you into the bedroom.
“What movie?” he asked.
“I don't care.” you crawl into bed and snuggle down into the warm covers and soft pillows.
“Okay.” Tyler flips on Pet Sematary.
You pull the covers up over your head and hide, “That's going to terrify me! The original scared me!”
“Nothing to be scared of when you got me here, Darling.” he crawls into bed next to you and holds you tight. “I think we need to put this day on repeat for the rest of the week,” he whispered, kissing you softly.
“I wouldn't complain about that.” you sigh, snuggling into his side a little closer as the movie began.

hey, guess who's back!!
HAPPY NEW YEARRRR
incoming bugs nowwww she starts backing up, suitcase dragging tightly next to her. "Maybe I'd genuinely like to know."
You start to notice that something isn't right when you approach the suitcase's corpse, shoving the agent aside by her shoulder. You're expecting to see cracked vials of genetic material, crushed electrical equipment, reams and reams of paper cataloging a genetic sequence, maybe. Instead you see the sleeve of a sweater and a burst tube of leaking toothpaste. There's a few pairs of boxers strewn in the road, little personal odds and ends littered around.
Oh, this moment makes me feel so bad for her. Sorry for being an asshole, will continue to be a villain and a pain in your ass tho <3
The OverSight agent is apologizing to the sedan's driver, scurrying around to gather up her stuff. she tips the suitcase's lid over with her foot, piling items in hurriedly, sloppily.
Giving her a quiet confirmation, you turn your focus back to R.. She's still facing you, suitcase slack in her hands, cautiously waiting for a response. Is this intentional? Even after reading it again I’m not sure
Actually checking the code it does not seem to be?
Giving her a quiet confirmation, you turn your focus back to $!{R_name}. $!{R_heshe}@{R_plural 're|'s} still facing you, suitcase slack in ${R_hisher} hands, cautiously waiting for a response. FEEDBACK SECTION Reney is such a cutie tho, she's def my fav from the demo rn. I've been wondering if we don't become a super hero can we not romance her? ALSO ALSO, I love how you did the new fight system. It's so much better than the old one, because it was annoying when you wanted to do something but couldn't because you didn't choose the right genome/parts. This system feels more fair imo. I enjoyed so much the comments about our powers/enhancements. It really makes each character we play as feel unique and totally different. I was surprised how much attention to detail you had when it comes to our powers. Of course, if I'm bored and see a fast food I'd want to look at what people ordered using my supervision. There are many little moments like that which add up and make the game a much better experience. It signals to a player that our choices actually matter and do impact the story, which is something that doesn't happen as often as it should in interactive fiction. Even though this is just the demo, I see a lot of potential. More general life stuff, Good luck with your internship this year. Try not to overwork yourself and remember to take rests. We can wait for updates. I hope 2025 will be a good year to you! and if you do ever open up beta applications i'll be the first to apply LOL
HAPPY NEW YEARSS WAHOO🎉 (I say seven days after the holiday)
Capitalization errors fixed! And I FINALLY found the discrepancy in my code that was displaying Sullivan's name as the default "R." They are now actually Reid or Reney in text. Thx for bringing my attention to it 🤘🤘
On ur comments & feedback-
You can definitely romance Reney even if you stay a villain, I love that dynamic. Feel free to keep being mean to her. She'll get back at you soon enough.
I'm super pleased that the new fight system is working out!! Good to hear that the flavor and variation from the different powers still comes through. I'll be lengthening the first Sullivan fight and changing the optional prologue combat to fit the new form.
Cheers to the the well wishes, same to you!!! (>_<)> Thanks again 4 all the bug help. I'll probably move to a closed beta once I reach later chapters, in which case u will absolutely be welcome aboard.

vespertine: evening blooms prologue - nishinoya yuu/cat hybrid!reader
Next - M.list - Ao3
A/N: she's here! housekeeping: right now, I hope to update every other wednesday until I've caught a rhythm with this fic, so we're hoping next update will be 10/9. it may come a week sooner, but shouldn't be any later than that--the next chapter is already written, and the ultimate goal is for this fic to update weekly once I've got a more clear plan set in place for it.
Summary: Yuu feels like he's at a dead-end in his life, despite his many accomplishments ranging from a middle school volleyball award to losing his virginity in high school, the proudest of these being befriending the mother cat in the alleyway beside his apartment. She rewards his friendship by introducing him to the dying hybrid behind the dumpsters.
Warnings: blanket series warnings (see vespertine masterlist for details), implied alcohol abuse, light mentions of blood/hospitals
Words: ~3000
prologue: alley cats
Nishinoya Yuu is on the precipice of a mental break, and no one seems to have noticed.
He's not sure anyone would believe him if he bothered to bring it up. He's Yuu, the bright, unrelenting baby of the Nishinoya family and the single best brother his sisters have ever had. (Unrelated, the only brother they've ever had.) He's that Nishinoya, talents ranging from a middle school "best libero" award (the highlight of his life so far, even though he doesn't really play anymore) to finding the wrong time to be at the wrong place and get blamed for shit he had nothing to do with, all because of his kickass hair and inability to keep to himself. He's Yuta, second most popular host at Nakamoto's and soon to be the first, if he keeps up the good work.
It's funny, really, how easy hosting is. He spent all of high school growing used to a reception anywhere from "total disinterest" to "actively making fun of him" if he dared trying to pursue a girl while being only 159 centimeters tall, and here he is, four nights a week, leaning in with bright eyes and nodding along while some beautiful married woman (Misaki, her name is Misaki) tells him he's so cute over a glass of wine. Yeah, he comes back to the apartment most nights totally exhausted, sleeps until noon, is basically forced to drink for work, and has no idea where he's going in life, but what fun is there in knowing that, anyway?
So he leans in. He smiles. When Misaki or one of his other clients comes in for him, he compliments her hair and asks is that a new dress? and flashes a smile, and on his days off, he does what he can to keep the apartment clean enough that Mei doesn't ask questions and forget the taste of alcohol in his mouth.
"Yuta-kun?" Misaki tilts her head with a pout. "What are you thinking about?"
He blinks. Laughs it off. "Sorry, Misaki-chan. You just look so lovely tonight that I keep getting distracted. I'm really lucky that you choose me, you know?"
"Oh, please," she says, a bubbly laugh leaving her lips. "There isn't anyone else for me. You know, the other day, my husband…"
She launches right into another story. He frowns appropriately, files away the details without really processing them, tops off her glass for her when it starts getting low. He's grown skilled at making the mechanical look fluid.
When he tunes back in, she's talking about that damned hybrid, the one her husband brought home and fell in love with. According to her, the single source of every problem in her life: if not for her, her husband would still be interested in her, but instead, he focuses all his attention on a pretty young thing just because she's got doe eyes and a twitchy tail.
"I mean, we have kids! What, am I supposed to tell them their father's sleeping with a deergirl instead of their mother?" she snaps, then sighs. "I'm sorry. You probably don't want to hear about this."
"No, no, tell me. Is Nara still making trouble?"¹
"You wouldn't believe it." She pauses, takes a dramatic sip of her wine glass. "I'll need another bottle tonight if I'm going to get into the stunt she pulled last night. Any recommendations?"
He flashes another toothy smile, reaches for the menu. "Let's take a look."
The night drags on that way—Misaki for two hours, then another regular, then a new customer who blushes and smiles too sweetly to have ever done anything like this before, who looks at him with hearts in her eyes when she names him her preferred host. It's a victory that feels too, too empty, nearly forgotten by the time he's unlocking the door to his apartment and kicking off his shoes, muttering a quiet tadaima! into the room.
No response comes, not that he expected it. Mei left for another business trip this morning, so it's just him here, and she'd be asleep this late, anyway. No one to talk to when he strips off his suit jacket, or tease him for throwing it on the floor, only to immediately pick it back up and gingerly hang it on the coat rack.
He flicks on the lights in the living room, collapses onto the couch. Mei left a note on the whiteboard, enough words to make his head spin with the last vestiges of alcohol in his system. He'd done good tonight, he thinks, managed to get away with only drinking about two glasses' worth of whatever shit his clients had ordered, managed to come home only a little buzzed.
His alcohol tolerance is basically fucked, he thinks as he stares at the note and doesn't comprehend it.
Right. Focus.
Her handwriting, smooth and font-perfect, fills the board.
Yuu! I had to jet out for another trip! I'll be in Hawaii with a client until 9/22. I wasn't able to take the trash down before I left and trash day's tomorrow, so please run that down so it doesn't start to smell! I'll be 19 hours behind you, but just think of me as 5 hours ahead! Please let Mom + the girls know where I'm at and that I'll bring back souvenirs! I'll call when I've touched down. There's leftovers in the fridge and if you're not gonna cook the chicken tomorrow, you should stick it in the freezer. Be good, okay?
PS. The neighbor in 802 was looking for you. I think he wants to hang out next time you're off work!
He groans. Lets his head drop against the back of the couch.
He'll get to it, all of it, in a minute, once he gets changed out of his work clothes and heats up something to snack on. Gone is his button-down, the silver necklace, the too-nice pants and belt. Before he steps into the shower, his reflection catches his eye, and his stomach turns.
He never recognizes himself after work. The stupid one-day hair dye shit he uses to cover his blond streak is convenient—it lets him walk around on his days off with a certain plausible deniability. Misaki or one of his other clients might recognize his face on its own, but given how much they drink with him, it's doubtful. Still, he covers the blond with black on work nights, runs some product through to make it all… swoopy and dreamy, or whatever, instead of the trademark spikes-and-tuft he wears off the clock. It works well, it washes out easy, and it looks fucking nothing like him.
Nothing like him at all.
"The commission's good," he says out loud. "It's good."
He drops the stupid fucking wristwatch a client gave him into the handmade jewelry dish Mei gave him for his "birthday" earlier this year.² The last work thing weighing him down. It doesn't prevent him from feeling the disconnect when he meets his reflection's eyes.
The commission is good. Good enough that it shouldn't matter how long he has to stand under the running water to wash off the shift, the feeling of the alcohol, the cling of twenty women's perfume on his skin, his clothes, in his hair. It shouldn't matter how his nice, expensive, gift-from-Aya watch feels like a cuff on his wrist by the end of the night, or that he can't skip wearing it even one night for risk of losing a client. It's good.
He doesn't need to worry about affording repairs or maintenance for his bike, can go toe-to-toe with Mei for paying the bills, even with her cushy jetsetting consultant job. His clients bring him gifts and spend money just to spend time with him, and none of them are objectionable-looking in the least. Not that he's ever seen a girl he didn't think was at least a little pretty.
He steps out of the shower, slings a loose towel around his waist. His reflection looks a little better now—still clearly exhausted, but at least he can recognize Yuu looking back at him. He finds basketball shorts, a hoodie. His keys and wallet. Throws a burrito in the microwave, throws his towel on top of the hamper.
While his burrito simultaneously over- and under- cooks, ensuring an ideal 3 AM trash-and-cat-run eating experience, he finds a can of cat food in the pantry and dumps it on a plate. He made good money on commission tonight; Mama Kitty can have some of the top-shelf wet food.
One final pat of his pockets as he kicks into some sandals: wallet so he can open the side door after hours, phone, keys, wrapped burrito. Trash bags in one hand, plate of food for Mama Kitty in the other.
She doesn't greet him right away when he makes it outside. Probably, she's tending the kittens and will be with him soon. He sets down the plate on the stoop, flings the trash bag into the dumpster, takes a seat, and waits. She'll probably come out around the time he burns the ever-loving fuck out of his tongue on his burrito.
It's a balmy night. Quiet, for the city. Quieter in contrast to Nakamura's, to obligate conversation, laughter, serenading women with enough money to afford it, or in contrast still to the roar of his motorcycle carrying him back to the apartment. The trains don't run when he gets off work. More small talk at the end of a shift is the last thing he needs. It's too dark in the alleyway to see whether there's clouds in the peek of sky overhead, but there's definitely the sting of rain amid the smell of garbage. It's just bright enough to see Mama Kitty when she hops up on the stoop beside him with a hoarse nyaugh.
He laughs every time he hears it. She meows like a lifelong smoker, like she pulls eighty hour work weeks at the factory and sleeps ten hours a week, tops. Noya takes another bite of his burrito as she watches him expectantly. "Me too, Mama Kitty, me too. Kittens doing okay?"
Mama Kitty doesn't reply. She's tired, too, at three in the morning, but something feels different tonight; it's in the way she doesn't turn to scarf down the food she's brought, the way she stares him down. Ungrateful, he thinks with a quirk of his lips as she eyes his burrito instead.
"You don't want this, sweetheart. It's somehow the hottest thing I've ever eaten and still frozen in the middle. That food you've got there? It's some fancy American brand. Kaede hand-picked it for you. Said it's good for new mothers. Helps them produce enough milk and rebuild their energy so they can take care of the babies. This cat food will change your life, Mama Kitty. You just gotta eat it instead of my dinner."
Her tail flicks at the air, agitated as she lets out another death rattle of a meow. She's insistent, tail flicking even faster.
He raises a challenging eyebrow. "You're not getting my burrito."
Mama Kitty's eyes focus. Her shoulders drop. Sensing that she's about to pounce, he closes his hand over his burrito protectively, letting his keys rest on his lap.
She lunges, instead, for those keys, and, protective as he was of his shitty 100 yen burrito, he doesn't move quick enough to catch her. He lets out a shout, springing to his feet and narrowly snatching his phone out of the air as it slips out of his pocket with the movement.
"Oi, Mama Kitty! If you don't like the new brand, just say so!" he shouts after her as he chases her further down the alley.
He's never really gone this far down. The one time he tried, Mama Kitty had hissed at him something monstrous, sounding close to a horror movie monster and very visibly prepared to make him find out if he dared fuck around any further. That had been after she had her kittens, so he'd always just assumed that she didn't want him near them. No problem, he just wouldn't go past the dumpsters.
This time, she doesn't hiss, doesn't spit; doesn't turn to him with ears pinned and ratty fur fluffed and perfectly replicate the noise the zombies from one of his shooters make. She drops the keys a few meters ahead of the end of the alley, comes to sit just in front of a lump of something he doesn't recognize. He scarfs down the last of his burrito, proud of how easily he manages to fit half a burrito down his throat without choking, and shoves the trash in his hoodie pocket so he can scoop his keys up.
A noise gives him pause.
It's not one of Mama Kitty's—it's too high and not nearly crunchy enough. It doesn't quite sound like a kitten, either—he's caught the kittens' meows once or twice and they're more like squeaky toys, though they've been growing a bit sweeter lately.
No, this was more like a whimper, like a human whimper, and his blood is tinging cold as he looks for the source.
He stuffs his keys in his pocket with the burrito wrapper. It's dark back here, dark enough that Mama Kitty's all but disappeared except for the white in her tabby coat and the reflection of a distant streetlight off her eyes, so he fumbles for his phone's flashlight.
A chorus of the squeaky meows he'd expected to hear raises in protest as the light shines on them. Later, he'll try to remember back and be sure there was four kittens to report to Kaede, but for now, he's focused on the lump they're curled up with, on not dropping his phone as he takes in the sight.
There's the peek of skin, a tangle of hair. What's not visible, as he tries to make sense of what he's half-convinced is a dead body in the alleyway beside his apartment, is draped in hospital gown blue.
Human. A kid, maybe a teenager.
Then: large ears flicking, almost like Mama Kitty's. One ear torn, though where Mama Kitty's left point is jagged from one fight or another, the lump's ear is torn in a way that looks clean, purposeful. Like someone held it down and just snipped the point off.
Another whimper, or maybe a groan. A tail flicks up, wraps over the human-shaped lump's side.
Not human. Hybrid.
"H-hey," Noya says, clearing his throat. It's coated with cheese—fucking burrito—and that's what he'll tell anyone who might ask why he stammers, why his tone comes out sounding so much like fear when that's not a thing he feels. "Are you—are you alright?"
A flick of the ears greets him, but no other movement. He looks to Mama Kitty, who watches him cautiously. No hostility yet. He crouches, reaches for the hybrid, and when his pinkie brushes one of the kittens, he hears a half-hearted hiss from behind.
Message received.
He swallows thickly. "Alright. Help the hybrid, don't touch the babies. Loud and clear, Mama Kitty."
Nyeeaughh.
A soft huff. He shakes the hybrid's shoulder gently—it doesn't react, except for its tail to flick and drape over his forearm. It shivers under his hand, too violently for the weather.
"Hey, c'mon. You gotta wake up."
No response.
He sets the phone aside, tries his best to sit the hybrid upright without too much force or jostling. The good news is that it's light, concerningly light. Clearly a cat hybrid, which, sure, he thinks he remembers they're supposed to be smaller than your average human, but he'd swear that he's slung around toddlers that were heavier. Makes it easy to lift, even as he wonders whether any hybrid is supposed to be this light.
It's awake, he thinks. It looks at him with bleary eyes, pupils constricting harshly when he raises up the flashlight again. "Hey. Can you hear me?"
No response, except to track his lips with its eyes. It occurs to him, belatedly, that some hybrids never learn to talk, and this one might be one of them.
"Can you, like, blink twice at me if you understand me?"
Two blinks.
He exhales a sigh of relief. "Okay. Alright. I don't know what happened to you, but I'm here to help, okay?"
The hybrid's eyes flick to Mama Kitty, and for a split second, Noya swears she nods back.
The hybrid nods in reply.
"Are you hurt? Can you show me where you're hurt?"
It glances down. Noya follows the eyes to the pricks of red beginning to seep into and stain the hospital blue covering its abdomen, and… well, fuck.
He's gonna have to call Kaede for this one.
Footnotes
1. Nara is a deer hybrid, "adopted" from the Nara prefecture itself. Misaki's husband is not very creative with names.
2. Noya, mostly on Mei's insistence, tells clients his birthday is April 10th, six months before his actual birthday. He maintains it half for privacy (if a client tracks him down they're likely to cause issues for Mei, too) and half because it's sort of nice to have a half-year birthday.

"I’m your father's significant other," I stated as I peered down from the upper level, taken aback by Yunho's clenched fists as he struggled to contain his anger. "He is on a business trip," I continued, attempting to clarify the situation. "Perhaps you have the wrong residence. My partner is occupied with his work and does not have the time for any romantic involvement."
"He typically meets with me after his business trips, which is why he informed you that he would return in a week. However, the actual duration of his trip is only three days. When he states that he will be gone for two weeks, he is actually scheduled to return in one. Do you understand what I am implying?" I wished to approach Yunho to calm him down, but he appeared as though he might strike me, so I remained seated and listened.
"He visits me during those additional times," I continued. "So, are you suggesting that my father lied to me?" The woman did not appear apologetic; rather, it seemed as though she was doing this on purpose, which enraged me. "No, he was simply attempting to keep it hidden for a while, you know, since your mother passed away three years ago, and we have been together for two years."
Did my father only mourn my mother for a year before moving on? Did he not love her? "And why are you here?" Yunho's tone became increasingly passive-aggressive as he attempted to be polite, and I did not blame him, given that the woman was smiling at everything she said as if she enjoyed it.
"I thought your father would be here, but I suppose not," the woman replied. Yunho gave her a sarcastic smile. "Okay, bye." "Perhaps I should stay until he returns," the woman suggested. Yunho's expression changed from a fake smile to a neutral one. "Yeah, that's not going to happen. Goodbye."
He slammed the door in her face, and I ran to my room since he was going to go upstairs. I called my father to inform him of what had occurred. "Hello, honey, what's going on?" "A woman came over claiming to be your girlfriend. She's lying, right?" My father sighed, obviously not wanting us to find out just yet. "I'm sorry; I didn't want you both to know this early."
I couldn't believe he had kept this from us for so long. He always told us that he would never keep secrets from us, and this... this was a significant secret. "So when were you going to tell us? Once you get married? Once you have a child with her?" "You dated her two years after Mom died!" My father attempted to calm me down, but it only made me angrier. "I know; I'm sorry."
"Look, why don't you order yourself something, new clothes, jewelry, anything?" I scoffed at the fact that he was attempting to buy my forgiveness. "Not everything is about money! I just want to talk to you and ask why you kept this from us!" "It's because I didn't want you guys to be angry with me." "I'm not angry, Dad. I just wanted to know why."
"We'll continue this conversation as soon as I get home. Alright?" "I'll see you later then. Goodbye." I said goodbye to my father, and he ended the call. I walked to Yunho's room and knocked on the door since I knew that if I walked in, he would start shouting since he was angry, and it would be much worse.
He let me in and looked at me with annoyance. "What do you want?" "I just spoke with Dad, and he had a reason for not telling us." "What is it, then?" He appeared a little sad, and I sat on his bed and explained it to him. "Because he knew you would react that way, he wanted to tell us at the right time."
He began shouting as if I were the one who had kept it hidden, and I could hear the pain in his voice. "Mom died! I don't think there will ever be a right time." "I know, but-" "Y/n, just get out of my room." I rolled my eyes and hit him with his pillow before leaving his room. I put on my AirPods and listened to some music while making a smoothie, attempting to figure out why he was being such a salty asshole.

Oh no, I was just scrolling through my asks and I'm so behind on answering them, it's embarrassing!! Okay, I gotta fix that! I'll start later today and begin working through my asks from the top!
Before that, I bring a life update this morning!
I've been a bit quiet here, and there's actually a reason for that — I've been writing!
I'm not sure how many you remember this, but a few months ago I made a post about wanting to expand the topics I write about, and my overthinking brain not wanting to post the new content as Earthquake. I'm not going to repeat myself, so if you want to read the post, I'll link it here!
For several months I just kind of sat on the idea, but recently the urge became too much to resist, so I started writing a fic! It's lengthy and multi-chapter, so I've been putting a lot of time into it, which has naturally left me with a little less time to work on my usual sickfics. So that's why I've been a little quiet!
My sickfics aren't going anywhere. Hyperfixations love to come and go, and as soon as I've satisfied the little idea goblin in my brain with my current fic, I'll work on sickfics! And for those who do want to read what I write outside of Earthquake, once I've gotten far enough with the fic to post it, I'll share a link with those who want it! It's Cynonari flavoured, it has some sickfic elements, but all in all it's very different to what I write now.
As a small apology for just how quiet I've been, I'll leave a sneak peek to chapter 2 of Distance Between Us, below the cut!
And thank you guys again for putting up with me and my recent inactivity. When I get home from work today, I'll start making that dent in my askbox, I promise!
The coughs broke off, leaving Cyno softly panting. Sweat rolled down his face in large droplets, dripping down onto the bed sheets. Everything was spinning.
“Kaveh?” Cyno managed to find his voice, though he didn't have the strength to lift his head.
Kaveh patted his back. “You with me? For a few moments there you didn't seem to recognise me.”
“...where am I?”
“You're safe, you're home.” Kaveh told him. The mattress shifted as he sat down next to Cyno. “You're in your own bed, in your own bedroom. You're just sick.”
“Tighnari?” Cyno asked immediately, searching.
“He’s not here, Cyno, he's traveling. Remember?”
Cyno sucked in a large, shaky breath, closing his eyes. Alright, yeah, he was starting to remember where he was and what was going on. He got sick in the night, he accidentally called Kaveh. Right, yeah.
“Sorry.” Cyno mumbled, wiping the sweat from his face. He stopped when he realized there were tears on his face. Humiliated, he ducked his head, scrubbing at his face. “...I was confused for a moment.”

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Thank you so much for following and supporting LGFH for another year. I hope 2025 treats you all well and that we can safely make it to many years more. It's now time for this year's edition of The #LittleGirlFromHell New Year's Update Post!
Webcomic #WebtoonCanvas
What's Next for LGFH: This year the story will start ramping up for the Kaenime Expo Arc! If all goes to plan, this year you will get some deeper insight into the backstory of a certain character and their family life, as well as a conflict incited in the present by a mysterious force… As for another certain main character, they will have to face a trial that will take them down a very personal trial of self-discovery--hopefully, you'll see all of these this year!
Hiatus Warning: Also, while the next four chapters are ready and set to release accordingly, I'll go ahead and prepare you to possibly expect another upload hiatus later this year, as my classes will soon start back up, which will certainly take time away from working on buffers. Sorry about that. It hadn't been working out great for me to break my back working on LGFH by myself while juggling work, school, and all responsibilities. I hope someday--hopefully soon--to dedicate my life to LGFH first and foremost so I can update it ASAP. For now, I can only ask for your patience and forgiveness.
A Small Change: In addition, I'll be making a slight change to LGFH's upload schedule from this year on, and the weekdays in which new chapters drop will change from Mondays to Tuesdays. No huge reason other than I'm always off-work on Tuesdays and I think I'd prefer to be "free" on update days. I'd rather be there to engage with and promote the new chapters instead of missing out because I'm at work! Just a heads up~! That means the newest chapter will be released on January 7th instead. ^^ AND THAT'S ABOUT IT FOR THIS UPDATE~. There is a more thourough update over at my Bluesky (@/bloomingjackie.bsky.social) which includes a small update on my upcoming Patreon page, so if you wanna check it out, be sure to follow me there for that and all future updates! ^^ ONCE AGAIN, HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE~

news romantics- the great war pt¹
author's notes: I've been feeling sick lately, I'm starting to get used to a new routine, and I'm working for an average of 12 hours a day, I think I'll make 3 updates here before putting a new chapter on ao3, thank you for your affection and understanding, remember to drink water and thank you again for not giving up on me
The classes were going well, but the one who wasn't was YN. She had the feeling that she was being watched from every corner. In the second period, when she left to go to the bathroom, she could feel that the moment she got up, the conversations stopped. Of course, she tried to tell herself that it was just her imagination, but she was so lost in her thoughts that she couldn't approach anyone in her class. Until she felt a hand on her shoulder, when she looked: _ Excuse me, can I be paired with you? I'm Hana Higasa… _ Yes, you can, I'm YN, nice to meet you; I just apologize, I was a little lost… _ We're going to have to present the ancient period in literature, it was the only one left… and since we're the only ones in a pair, I suggest we start doing it as soon as possible… _ I agree, do you want to go to the library?
On the way to the library, the girl talked more about the work. There would be a knowledge fair and the course would be responsible for taking a trip back in time and telling the history of national literature. At this moment, YN's mind was bubbling with ideas, and when they got to the library, they started to plan. Lost in their plans, the girls didn't notice the arrival of the white-haired boy who had watched the finale and was excited. He didn't know why, there was something about YN that sparked his interest. It was like a bittersweet candy where the mix of sensations made him numb and wanting more. So he slowly approached and quickly lowered his hands on the girl's shoulders, saying: BOO! YN gets scared and this definitely makes Satoru's day. She starts to laugh uncontrollably, supporting herself with her hands on her stomach. After the scare, she turns around and angrily starts to talk to Hana: Let's get out of here, otherwise this idiot will never let us finish. And amidst the laughter, the boy remembers the reason for his trip to the library: No, wait YN, everyone is waiting for you at the cafeteria and I came to get you… Really? So why didn't Shoko send me the location on my phone? _ I wanted to come here… While the two argued, Hana watched them and decided that she liked them as a couple. She coughed and called their attention: _ So, I'll see you tomorrow, after class, is everything okay? _ Oh, yes, Hana, of course, but I'm sorry you had to witness this… _ No problem, I promise I won't be late tomorrow, when I get to my dorm I'll send you a message, kisses - and so she left with her stuff, and when Yn looked back at Gojo, he already had his stuff in his hands and a pitiful look on his face: _ Let's go, Yn, or we'll be even later! The path to the cafeteria was short, but very beautiful. There were trees that together formed an arch and in the middle of each one there were cherry trees. The sound of the birds was comforting and so neither of the two young people spoke for that short period, enjoying the view and the sounds. The cafeteria was a cozy place, but looking inside, Yn didn't see any of her friends, but before Gojo could say anything, he took her hand and led her to a private place. _ Where are the guys? Didn't you say everyone was waiting for me? _ Yeah, I lied, sorry _ What do you mean? For what? _ U Yn, so I can go out with you, of course _ Do you feel guilty? _ Hi? _ Do you feel guilty about the kidnapping that happened on the first day? _ Satoro's face was serious, although he expected the girl to understand the situation, he didn't think she would actually bring up the subject. _ It's not your fault, you know, I already expected this… , but I was your companion… I was supposed to protect you! It's okay, you saved me and now we're here, that's what matters… , but yn, I have the ability to protect you and I failed in that… look, I'm going to tell you for the last time, even if we have the intention of achieving something and an unshakable trust, it's okay to make mistakes, making mistakes is part of our humanity and recognizing and growing from our mistakes is even more human… do you understand? _ yes, and look, you have a very powerful way of saying things, who taught you that?
_ you know I don't know? that sentence was just in my mind… but changing the subject, what's your favorite sweet and a food you'd like to try _ any sweet and cheese bread and yours? _ seriously? It's mine too, but I've already eaten cheese bread and it's definitely my favorite.
They talked all afternoon and, amid sweets and warm laughter, they got to know each other better. When it was 6:40 p.m., they were walking back to the dormitory. As they climbed the stairs of the college, they stopped several times to admire nature. At sunset, INN noticed how Satoru looked so naturally handsome and yet so unnatural. In the midst of the intense green color, he stood out like an angel. The golden and orange color of the sunset, above all, made him even more worthy of his angelic presence. When he noticed that he was being observed, he asked why. While she laughed at his reaction to discovering that he had walked halfway across campus with his mouth covered in pink whipped cream, she realized that she was home. At the end of the climb, the sky turned pink and purple, and the crickets and fireflies gave the place a magical air. In the thoughts of the white-haired boy, INN's laughter was purely the meaning of life, but there was a strangeness inside him, because how could he have such deep feelings for a person he had just met? Denial was the glass dome and those feelings were flowery fields, well at least she had all the time in the world to understand that. _ What are you thinking so much about? _ Huh? _ You've been very thoughtful since we arrived, by the way, where's Shoko? I haven't seen her yet. _ Ah yn, I'm trying to come up with a new joke so I can hear your laugh again, about Shoko? She must be at some lecture those monsters made us watch, let's have a skincare night, is that what you were going to do?
The night was calm, the moon was full and in her mind the girl didn't see how a night could go wrong, or that she would do something she would regret; so without further ado she accepted. She didn't even find it strange that he knew her plans, after all how could everything go wrong?

Progress Update: 10/04/2023
Hello guy! Been a long time since I've done one of these or posted anything of substance (sorry) -- but I've decided I need to start doing these again. I'm hoping if I can set aside more time for TLH, Metanoia, Hollow, and a mysterious third thing, I'll be able to get updates out more frequently. So, I might have an update for you (which is good news!) but it's not chapter two (which is bad news...).
Chapter Two needs to be re-planned (but don't worry, it wasn't all scrapped!). I decided mid-way that I wasn't happy with the direction of it, and things in the game were happening too fast for my tastes. Don't worry though, I'll try to keep you guys posted as I progress through Chapter Two. I've also been juggling the idea of having a Patreon where I can post extra content and stream art and coding for my games. While I do have one made, it isn't published, and I don't want to post the link without having anything worthwhile to share. I've figured out all the details for it and will let you know what I've decided once there's a bit more to Chapter Two and Hollow.
Now then, the update!
I've essentially gone through and further fleshed out or removed some scenes that I felt hindered the story and/or prevented me from springboarding off of it properly into the chunk that needs to be written.
I know right now TLH is kinda of a 'Collection Simulator' where you can pick up a lot of things, but I promise it'll make sense later. Everything you collect, you collect for a reason and there are consequences to what you haven't taken and what you have. Chapter Two will show this and I hope you enjoy the 'little' interaction that comes from it!
I want to be super transparent and let you guys know that I haven't had a lot of time the last year for writing, and stress + depression made it hard to work on TLH. I wasn't enjoying it for a long time, but now I'm determined to really push forward because I do love TLH and I want to share it with people. I'm sorry again for how much I dropped the ball with updates and keeping you guys posted but I promise to try better from here on out.
Thank you to everyone who has stuck around so far and/or has expressed interest in my silly little game! It means the world to me and more! I hope to see you guys again soon, maybe by the end of this month (Halloween Update?!) with a small update as an apology!
Thank you and please stay safe out there! The world is wild and getting wilder!

Anything (Pt.8)
cw: sexual tension and horniness, erection, being naked together
Chapter 8 I shut the door to my apartment and leaned my back against it, my lips still tingling from the kiss we shared before Matty hopped into a cab to get to his meeting which he was now late for. He had changed back into his date clothes from the night before, leaving his hoodie and sweatpants behind.
We'd spent the rest of the morning in bed cuddling while chatting, laughing and eating cereal. Eventually, after much protesting from Matty, I convinced him not to cancel his day of meetings and interviews. He obliged only after I promised him I'd come over for dinner later that evening.
I walked back upstairs, still in a daze, and started making my bed. I had once again been lost in thought when I heard my phone buzz on my nightstand.
I'm not particularly enjoying being apart from you :(
My heart fluttered as I read his text and my phone buzzed again.
If you get out of the studio early, will you please come straight to mine?
I couldn't help but smile at his eagerness. It wasn't just that it was flattering, but something about his unabashed honesty was so comforting. He wasn't afraid of this, which helped me feel unafraid too. I sat down on the edge of my bed and began to type.
I'm also not enjoying being apart from you :( I want to come over straight after, I really do, but I need to go home to shower and change out of my studio clothes first. If I don't... well, if you saw me like that then let's just say you'd probably enjoy being apart more lol
It didn't take long for Matty to respond.
You could sprout a tail and 3 extra heads and I'd still be utterly obsessed with you. Come over straight after- you can wash up at mine. If it helps I promise I won't look at you when you first get here (that's a lie btw)
I rolled my eyes at his message and I couldn't help but giggle- he was so funny and clever. As I began to type a response, I got another text from him.
Not to pressure you. Sorry, I'm being very selfish here. I've just got a bit of a crush, that's all :)
I took a moment to think before I wrote my next couple messages.
Wellllllll, when you put it like that... as long as you don't mind me taking a quick shower at yours before we eat then sure, I'd love to :)
I can text you when I'm heading over. I'll probably be done by 5:30/6:00 pm- maybe even sooner. Should only take me 15 min to get to your place from the studio
I couldn't help but blush when I read his response.
Amazing. See you then <3 Text me whenever you miss me plz
The little heart emoji made me shimmy with giddiness. I was so excited to see him again- and we'd only been apart for... three minutes? Four? It felt insane, but the connection we had felt so deep so immediately. I hopped up from my bed, running to my wardrobe to get dressed as quickly as possible so I could get to the studio right away. The sooner I got my work done, the sooner I'd be able to see Matty again.
The next several hours I spent at the studio working on a new piece as well as finishing up some older ones. Somehow, by some miracle, the day had flown by and I'd finished just a few minutes after 5 pm.
We'd texted throughout the day, updating each other when we found time, but we could both tell we were missing each other desperately already.
As soon as I finished loading my last piece into the kiln, I sent Matty a text letting him know I was heading over and I all but ran out of the building and onto the tube.
I didn't even care that I was covered head to toe in dried clay and glaze with my hair in a dishevelled little bun on the top of my head. I looked my absolute worst, and somehow I felt my best the second I opened Matty's door, which he'd let me know was unlocked. Jogging up his steps, I called out his name. As soon as I reached the top of the steps I barely saw Matty appear before I was swept up in his arms, enveloped in a deep and longing kiss. I greedily kissed him back, which only made him kiss me harder. Our hands ran over each other urgently, taking in each other's presence in every possible way. We tried to break off the kiss after several minutes of making out, but failed every time, going back for more as if we'd been starved of each other.
The sound of a timer going off eventually convinced us to stop, earning a grunt of annoyance from Matty.
"One moment, stay right here," he said before disappearing down the hallway. "Stay perfectly where you are, darling," I heard him yell from the kitchen. Reappearing moments later with his arms already reaching out for me, we pulled towards each other like magnets, embracing once again. After a few more moments of passionate kissing, I pulled away.
"Before we continue," I said giggling as he wrapped his arms around me and kissed my face all over, "I really want to take a quick shower. Do you mind?"
He was just kissing my neck, sending tingles down my spine and making me shiver, when he retreated and said, "Actually, I hope you don't mind, but I had something else in mind for you... follow me."
We walked into his bedroom hand in hand. Then he pushed open his bathroom door, revealing a bathtub full of thick foamy bubbles and candles lit all over. A plush white bathrobe hung on the wall, and a bottle of wine with a large wine glass sat on the stool next to the tub.
I was speechless.
"Hopefully you have everything you need, but if not, just give us a shout and I'll grab you whatever you need. I'll be in the kitchen when you're done," he said giving my hand a squeeze. He leaned down and kissed the side of my nose, to which I turned to face him fully before taking his face in both my hands and kissing him on the lips.
"Thank you," I said softly.
He looked at me sweetly so happy with my reaction as he walked out the door, our fingers parting only when our arms could no longer reach. As he began to close the door, he paused saying, "It's such a comfort to have you here in my home, knowing you're just down the hall... It's really lovely to be home together."
I smiled back at him as he shut the door behind him.
I walked over to the sink and washed my face and cleaned my fingernails of the caked-on clay. I slowly peeled off my clothes, reflecting on what Matty said. I felt so at peace knowing he was here. This wasn't my home, but I felt at home here, because he was here.
I lowered myself into the tub, enveloping myself in the lavender-scented suds. The water was the perfect temperature, soothing my sore body which ached from hunching over the pottery wheel for so long. I poured myself a glass of the chilled wine and sunk deeper into the suds.
My mind drifted back to the last memory I had of Matty in this bathroom- soaked from spraying each other with the showerhead, his shirt clinging to his muscled and toned body, water dripping from his damp curls onto his parted lips. I remembered the tension I'd felt at that moment- the tension we felt. I remembered his face perfectly, the way he looked at my lips, then back into my eyes, panting slightly from our water fight. If I hadn't been so nervous... I wondered what would have happened.
I let myself steep in that memory, and after a while, I couldn't tell if I was getting hot from the bathtub water, or from the memory itself.
Without thinking, I called out Matty's name. He appeared at the door a few moments later, his head poking in. "Yes, darling?" he asked, averting his eyes for my own modesty.
"It's okay, you can look. I think you put enough bubbles in here for a months worth of baths," I said with a lighthearted laugh.
He allowed his eyes to slowly turn and look at me laying in the bath, bubbles covering everything below my collarbone.
"Fuck..." he said to himself quietly. "You are painfully gorgeous, Anna."
I blush at his candidness. "Thank you, Matty." I tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear before remembering why I called him in in the first place.
"Are you doing anything super involved in the kitchen right now, or would you possibly want to keep me some company?" I asked.
He all but skipped over to the stool next to the tub and sat down, leaning in to kiss me.
"Of course, darling. Anything for you." He said as he rolled up the sleeves of the flannel shirt he wore. I could see a spatter of red sauce from whatever he'd been cooking staining his shirt underneath.
He saw me notice his soiled shirt, face turning red as he said "Things got a bit more involved in the kitchen than I anticipated."
"Actually, I was wondering... if maybe you'd like to join me?" I asked, my boldness faltering only briefly from the sweetness of our kiss.
He blinked at me, processing what I'd just asked him.
"It seems like you could do with a soak too," I added tentatively, gesturing at his shirt, my voice a question mark.
"Are you sure?" He asked. "I don't want to make you uncomfortable."
I smiled at him. "I wouldn't ask if I didn't want it. I promise."
"Well as long as you're sure..." he pulled his flannel off as he stood up to undress.
I looked away as he pulled his stained t-shirt off, allowing him some privacy while undressing. I could feel his eyes on me, his movements measured from the corner of my eye, watching to make sure I was okay with every step he took.
He lowered himself slowly into the tub across from me. The tub was wide enough that we could both lay with our legs stretched out side by side. Matty gently lifted one of my legs to rest on his chest and began to rub my foot. My eyes practically rolled back into my head from bliss. I sighed audibly.
"Now there's a sound I could live for," he said with a smile.
I frowned from pleasure, my eyes closing.
"Are you sure you're not an angel, Matty? You treat me way too well- if you keep this up I don't know what I'll do without you once my placement ends."
Matty's hands paused for a moment. He fell silent, and I wondered if I'd said something wrong.
"I know it's quite irresponsible, but can we pretend that you aren't leaving in a few months? Just for tonight?" He returned to rubbing my foot, looking me straight in the eyes. "I don't think I can think about that right now. Actually, I don't think I can think about it ever, but just for this one evening... I want to imagine this never has to end."
I couldn't tell if my heart had stopped, or was beating so fast that I could no longer feel it.
"Is that okay with you?" He asked, a look of innocence on his face.
"Of course," I said with sympathy, because I knew exactly what he meant, and I felt exactly the same way.
He kissed my big toe with a giant grin, making me laugh.
I sunk deeper into tub, relaxing, admiring the crinkles beside Matty's eyes as he smiled, taking extra time to memorize each one. I loved the way his eyes squinted when he smiled, the way he always spoke so earnestly with me. I loved that he always asked for consent. I loved how he would get carried away with his excitement, then always pedalled back to make sure I was in the same place as him. And I always was. I'd never fallen into step with someone like this before, every stride matching. I had never felt so safe with someone before. Or so turned on.
"Matty," I said, sitting upright, leaning towards him.
"Yes, dear?" He answered, eyebrows risen innocently.
"Kiss me. Please?"
"Anything for you." He said, rising from the tub, suds slowly dripping down his tattooed chest.
Our lips met, heat radiating from each other, dampness from the steam of the bath and our sweat intermingling. Our tongues met, dancing lightly with each other at first, then building intensity the longer we kissed.
I wrapped my arms around his naked torso, running my hands over his back, skin soft and slippery from the water. He gently placed one hand on the back of my neck, the other around my waist under water.
I couldn't get close enough to him, shifting myself onto my knees and straddling him, sitting down on his stomach as he reclined.
I was hungry for more. I kissed him deeper, and he pulled me in close against him in response, our bodies now touching everywhere.
"Is this okay?" He asked breathlessly, pulling away briefly to check in with me. I was so touched by his concern, which only made me want him more. I kissed his cheek, his jaw, then nibbled his ear. He moaned softly.
"Yes. Very, very okay." I said, my lips returning to his. We kissed even deeper, heat building.
He kissed me with even more intention now, his strong hands grasping at my hips. I ran my nails down his back, to which he responded "Fuck, Anna. I can't get enough of you."
I felt bold, so I pulled away, looked him dead in the eye and said, "So have me. Have all of me."
With that I shimmied further down his body, his erection now hard against my backside. I watched Matty's jaw drop as he processed what I'd just said and done. I maintained eye contact with him as I did it.
"... are you sure?" He asked slowly. "I don't want you to feel pressured to do anything just because I've got a bit excited."
I shook my head. "I mean it. I want you."
He shook his head in disbelief, eyes glazed with passion, "I need you." before he pulled me in with full force.
