Miraculous Ladybug Production Analysis

Today, I will be reviewing Miraculous Ladybug on the production quality. This goes on video quality and knowing its original format. We will be going over the base resolution, framerate, audio, and others. I've done some test by analyzing different sources of the show, and to see the techneical side.

Miraculous Ladybug credit goes to Zagtoon. Images are used for demonstration.

Video Resolution

On TV stations and on digital distribution, it is common to air or stream it on 1080p. In fact, most anime are digitally drawn on lower resolution than 1080p. For Miraculous Ladybug, this is the case.

Miraculous Ladybug is rendered at 720p, across all episodes and specials as of current. By taking some frames from Netflix stream, it is clearly upscaled from 720p. I did some check by looking at individual screenshots of the show and look at it on Photoshop. Looking at the characters hairs and some edges, you can tell that the source is upscaled.

It is common for a 3D animated TV show to render at lower resolution than 1080p, aside from the texts and the credits. The credits are clearly 1080p while the background is just upscaled to 720p. The text are clearly sharp and doesn't have anti-aliasing. The Ladybug icon on the left is also 1080p. On the opening, only the text are rendered at 1080p, but it's not as sharp as the credits. Still, it doesn't have jagged edges on the texts. Again, it is mixed with 720p background. Also, the logo scene seems to fit well with debicubic filter. I've tested upscaling filters with Avisynth on the frames to see what was the best. It seems like the studio actually use Bicubic scaling with Blur=1, and Ringing=3 setting. It is the default filter setting on Avisynth's Bicubic filter. I've check some masking between original frame and debicubic and use bicubic again, there was no difference aside from blurring out small compression artifacts caused by streaming.

So clearly, the show is upscaled from 720p with Bicubic filtering, with texts being full HD, especially seeing the credits.

(Although, the scene where Plagg gets sucked in on Stormy Weather, the vertical resolution looks like it's half. We know the show is not interlaced, but what happened?)

Tonemapping

Like most 3D television shows, all scenes are tonemapped to sRGB/rec.709 colorspace. No HDR or wide color gamut is natively supported. Since it is tonemapped to SDR displays, at certain points, Ladybug's outfits seems to have slight red value cut. It is seen when the red shades are over 255 red value, that it can't go brighter and either shows red banding, or red highlight details may be lost. However, the problem is minor, since other color values are present to shade over it.

Overall, the show looks colorful and looks nice for any displays.

Framerate

By looking at available sources, it seems like the show is rendered at 24fps. By watching Princess Fragrance and The Mime from official Miraculous Ladybug Youtube channel, I can hear the speed difference from most sources that plays at 25fps. It supposed to sound like the 24fps version. Background music tracks and the theme song are available. They seem to match the episodes' audio speed by reconizing the tempo. A lot of sources are seen as 25fps, with the audio sped up without altering the pitch. Technecally speaking, it would be 23.976fps instead of 24fps, but still is.

Framerate Conversion list

As said above, a lit of sources found are playing the episodes at 25fps with sped up audio, but no audio pitch has changed. It's common for PAL conversion to speed up 24fps content to match their 50hz displays (aside from portable displays and computer monitors show natively 60hz). However, in recent years, they use better technology to speed up the audio without altering the pitch, so that it stays true to the pitch of the original format. That way, no one can tell the difference.

Since PAL regions use the format above, I'll list the countries and channels that airs in 60hz or NTSC regions.

South Korea:

The show is aired in the original format. It's 24fps on all channels that airs the show.

Japan:

The show airs in the original format.

Brazil:

The show airs in the original format.

Canada:

Quebec airs the french version, but airs it at 24fps. Family Channel airs it the same way too.

United States:

On Nickelodeon, they would air it at 25fps. Even though most content in the country would air at 24fps, 30fps, or 60fps, Nickelodeon decides to air their shows at 25fps to make more room for commericals to earn more revenue. That also means they cut the credit sequences for the same reason too, with the credits displayed on last 30-seconds of each episode. The audio pitch is unaltered, however. Even their streaming services airs the show at 25fps. Few of their early episodes has wrong conversion on their website, by converting from 25fps to 24fps, albert, with interlaceing, for some weird reason. They look terrible when Nickelodeon had them on their website back in 2015. It is unknown if KidsClick airs it in the original format since I never watch the show from their platform.

Latin America:

This is the most weird conversion of them all. While the show airs at 24fps, Disney Channel LA did the inverse of PAL conversion. THAT MEANS the audio pitch is LOWER than most sources! When I saw their commericals or clips of the recordings taken from their channel, I can hear the audio pitch being altered, but not the typical PAL way. It is very uncommon for NTSC standards to do this sort of thing. I even went to Costa Rica to hear how the show plays over there. I hear the audio pitch being lower as of last year. This is very rare for any channels over there to do this. I don't know what source Disney Channel LA got for the episodes, but it seems like they got 25fps ones and decides to think it is converted already for PAL regions. Very weird. However, streaming services outside the channel never had this issue. It is unknown if PAL countries like Argentina did this too. Their Disney Channel is basically the same, except it's their timeline and broadcasts in PAL format, 50hz.

It is possible that each country can air the show in their own local channel. However, you would have to be in the spanish community to know if they're playing the show correctly.

Netflix:

As far as I know, they have the episodes at 25fps everywhere. iTunes:

Not sure if they still have it, but I remember them having 25fps playback.

Youtube:

Only Princess Fragrance and The Mime are available. It is in the original format, and so as the clips on their Youtube channel.

Overall, it is commonly seen as 25fps in most platforms. I'm not sure if they preserve 25fps on Shouts Factory's DVDs R1.

Blu-Rays

There hasn't been a Blu-Ray release for the series. It's not uncommon for the series to be released on Blu-Ray. Star Wars The Clones Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Samuari Jack, and Batman Animated series has got blu-ray releases at 1080p. DVDs are never HD, and are usually compresses poorly due to using MPEG2 codec from 1990s. You can only find the HD versions on digital platforms. I only know iTunes would do digital release of their episodes. You may have to rip the episodes yourself from other digital platforms. I know not many TV series here have blu-ray releases, but majority of the medias are movies and anime. In Japan, they have very high sale rates on Blu-Ray releases. Not only you get to watch the episodes without internet, but you have very high quality studio like video at the highest resolution with barely video compression artifacts.

Audio

It is common to have stereo audio on TV shows. However, Netflix seems to have 5.1 Surround Sound audio for the show. Usually, the voices are at the front speakers, while you hear the rest of the sound everywhere, with panning from one or multiple speakers to the next. Nickelodeon has aired the show in surrounded sound format before on their HD channels.

Censorship

Miraculous Ladybug is a family friendly TV series, and nothing weird or inappropiate is in it. It was intentionally made for worldwide audience. However, very few television networks made their censorships to any shows. Miraculous Ladybug never got cuts or alterations for anything, but rather small decisions.

On Disney Channel UK, they did a simple motion blur on some scenes to avoid or reduce fast motion lights to reduce risks of seizures. Most notably, the transformation scenes, catching the Akumas, flying butterflies restoring damaged properties, and fast fight scenes that takes big part of the screen. On Frame-by-Frame, the image either have the next frame blended on the current frame, previous frame blended on the current, or both.

Reducing seizures by motion blur may help, but the show doesn't have any strobe or seizure induring scenes. Most broadcasts would leave the show alone. Even Japan leaves the video untouched, despite having paka-paka laws in place on TV broadcasts for airing Electric Soldier Porygon in December 1997. All TV shows have the "Watch in bright lit room" notice on the beginning of the episode in Japan.

Saudi Arabia has skipped Copycat for some reason.

Miraculous Ladybug is rendered at 720p 24fps, with sRGB/rec.709 colorspace. The framerate, whether you're watching 24fps or 25fps, you wouldn't hear the audio pitch being different on the latter, so it's fine. The audio is maxed to 5.1 Surround Sound. Censorship goes from very small to none.

The overall TV show's quality seems pretty good for a TV series. Netflix has all the episodes for two seasons. Even if watching upscaled content, it still looks pretty fine. The audio and sound editing seems pretty great. The animation is smooth overall. The second season is the best season so far. It can be possible that later on, the series may start doing native 1080p rendering. It could be due to the fact that ray tracing on the studio's budget would take too long to render 1080p. Hopefully, native 1080p may soon be used for the future.

At this point, you probably know that the Amazon Echo is that cylinder that sits in your house and responds to voice commands, kind of like Siri for the home. Google has its own copycat version, called Google Home. These things are incredibly popular — already, they’re in 16% of American homes.

Both Amazon and Google have been aggressively encouraging other companies to build their voice technologies into their own appliances: refrigerators, light switches, lamps, speakers, robo-vacuums, TVs, headphones, security cameras, door locks, washers, dryers, cars, and so on. “Works with Amazon Alexa!” and “Works with OK Google!” signs were everywhere at CES last week.

You couldn’t swing a cat without hitting an Alexa-enabled product.

What’s great is that this isn’t an either/or thing. It’s not another Betamax/VHS war, or a Blu-ray/HD-DVD war. Since Alexa and “OK Google” are just software, there’s nothing to stop them from coexisting in the same product. The Sonos One speaker, Vivitar smart speaker, and new TiVo models, for example, can all understand commands barked in either command language.

Internet of Things

The Internet of Things, of course, is the nonsensical name for home devices that are networkable, so that we can control them by pulling out our phones and opening an app. For something that’s supposed to make our lives simpler and easier, that’s too much hassle. Consumers have been staying away in droves.

What may save the “I” in VICTOR is the “V” in VICTOR — voice control. “Alexa, is the dryer done yet?” “Hey Google, make it two degrees warmer in here.” “Alexa, lock the doors.” “OK Google, I want to watch ‘Rambo.’”

That arrangement actually works — and was everywhere at CES 2018. Samsung and LG, among others, demonstrated entire model living rooms and kitchens filled with appliances waiting for your verbal command.

Cars

The self-driving car courses at CES were a third bigger than last year. Every car company you’ve ever heard of, and a few you haven’t, were demonstrating their self-driving prototypes. Lyft was even giving a few lucky showgoers rides around town in self-driving cars.

For 10 years, people have been saying that these cars would hit the roads in 2020 — and guess what? Unlike most heavily hyped new technologies, this horizon isn’t receding. People are still saying 2020. That means it’s probably real.

Lots of people were also talking about Toyota’s e-Palette, a prototype self-driving store.

Toyota envisions its E-Palette as a self-driving store, delivery van, or even hotel room.

TVs

CES show floors have always been dominated by massive walls of brilliant TV screens, and this year was no exception. The industry is still hard at work pushing us to buy 4K TV screens, which have four times the number of pixels as hi-def screens. Only one problem: You can’t see the difference from a normal seating distance.

As it does every year, LG created a dazzling wall of TV screens—this time, in an undulating canyon.

Even if you could see it, there’s very little to watch. Not a single TV network or cable channel broadcasts in 4K. If you own a 4K television, and you want to watch 4K shows and movies, you have two choices: Buy a 4K Blu-ray player and buy new movies on disc — or stream your shows online, from services like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, and YouTube.

In short, 4K is kind of a hoax.

(What you can see — what is worth upgrading to — is a much less catchy format. It’s called HDR, for high dynamic range. Much brighter brights, much darker darks; more detail in those bright and dark places; and more shades in between. More shades of color, too. Really fantastic.)

So the forehead-slapping breakthrough of CES 2018 was — get this — 8K screens. That’s right: four times as many pixels as 4K. If 4K was a stupid hoax, then 8K is four times as stupid. Really? They think we’re going to re-buy all our movies on disc again, to play on another new special disc player?

Samsung displayed a new display technology called MicroLED, which it claims to be as great-looking as OLED but at a lower price and less chance of burn-in. Cooler yet, the company proposes selling these TVs as one-foot, borderless tiles, which you can assemble to make as big a TV as you like. The one on the show floor, at 146 inches diagonal, dubbed “The Wall,” was a huge hit with showgoers.

LG also displayed (in an off-floor, invitation-only hotel area) a huge flat screen TV that rolls up. It’s built like an upside-down window shade; when you need the screen to get smaller, it wraps up around a roller at the bottom, hidden inside a wooden box.

Why? Because, the company says, you may want to watch different movies or shows that have different screen proportions. The real reason, of course, is, “Because we could.”

Oddball things

The “O” in VICTOR is the catch-all for all kinds of other crazy stuff on display. Walk the 50 football fields’ worth of exhibit space, and you’d find:

Two laundry-folding machines. One, the Foldimate, will cost $980 but will require you to attach each piece of clothing to clips; the other, the Laundroid, will go for $16,000 but does everything for you.

A full-body suit for playing virtual-reality games, so that bullets can “hit” you anywhere, or you can walk into a hot or cold virtual place, and you’ll feel it.

An electronic breast pump that you wear secretly inside your bra as you go about your day.

A tiny, battery-free sensor that you wear on your fingernail to detect excessive exposure to UV light.

Another stab at the Google Glass concept. This time, the virtual screen is superimposed on your field of view by a full pair of sunglasses.

Not one, not two, but three self-driving suitcases that follow you through the airport.

Remember my exhaustive (and exhausting) report about the struggles of the through-the-air charging industry? The products that can charge your gadgets at a distance? Well, the FCC just approved some of these products, including the Energous three-foot charging system. The very first product to include it is called the Myant Skiin, a line of clothing that tracks your vital statistics as you wear it.

Robots

No surprise here: Robotics and automation were the stars of the show. Heck, they’re the stars of every show right about now. Everywhere you looked, there were shiny white plastic robo-things with big eyes and smiley mouths to look less threatening. Most of them seemed to be “because we could” designs, rather than “you need one of these.”

Here and there, though, you could spot far more purpose-built robots:

Honda displayed a series of robots designed for specific tasks: an all-terrain model for outdoor work; a self-balancing wheelchair; and a weird, globule-shaped, huggable “empathy robot” with facial expressions projected onto its face from within.

LG offered three new robots for commercial use: one for restaurants, to deliver food or drinks; one for hotels, to carry luggage up to your room; and one for grocery stores, which guides you to the food shelf you’re looking for, and scans the package as you drop it into its hopper.

Sony is re-introducing its Aibo robotic dog, this time in a more advanced, more puppy-like incarnation (probably $1,700 when it hits the U.S.). Sensors make the dog respond appropriately when you pet it or swat it; it learns your voice over time and seeks you out; and, like the original Aibo, it plays fetch with a pink ball.

Omron built a ping-pong-playing robot — not ever intended to be for sale, but to show off its robot-making skills.

Just to make sure all of Vegas’s bases were covered, the Sapphire Gentlemen’s Club featured two pole-dancing stripper robots as a CES gimmick.

Hail to the VICTORs

So, you get it: Same as last year, just more of it.

If all of that seems like a lot to read, well hey — here’s a rhyme to make it go down easier:

V is for the voice control in every gadget here ��� “Alexa, do my bidding!”… “OK Google, bring my beer!” In TVs, cars, and speakers, it’s a miracle of choice. The world’s at your command — at least if you don’t lose your voice!

I is for the second realm, called Internet of Things, It’s networked household stuff, complete with all the fun that it brings It’s thermostats, refrigerators, all your kitchen gear… So far, nobody’s buying it — but hey, perhaps next year.

C is for self-driving cars! So many at this show! We’re told they’re really coming soon — about two years to go. T is for the TV screens on all the expo floors. They look amazing when they’re here — but less so once they’re yours. 

O is for the oddball stuff! The offbeat and bizarre: This laundry-folding robot, or this crazy concept car. R is for the robots — Sony’s puppy stole my show. This grocery bot asks what you want, then shows you where to go.

So there’s your whole mnemonic — VICTOR! Hope you liked the show And don’t forget the greatest part — you didn’t have to go!

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite Launch, Vivo S1 Pro Price in India Reveal, CES 2020 Preview, and More Tech News This Week

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite launch was the highlight of the first week of 2020 as the tech companies prepare to show their wares at the next week’s CES 2020 tech fair. We already have some announcements of the products being showcased at CES and we will be talking about some of those as well as what we can expect next week in this wrap. Additionally, Vivo S1 Pro made its India debut and Jiomart was introduced on a pilot basis. Read on for more on the happenings that dominated the tech news space this week.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite launch

In a surprise announcement ahead of CES 2020, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite smartphones. Both smartphones will be going on sale in the coming weeks around the world, but we don’t have India-specific information right now. However, it shouldn’t take very long. As their names suggest, both Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite phones are the budget variants of the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 phones, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite share a couple of specifications, but there are some differences between the two phones as well. Both phones feature 6.7-inch full-HD+ screen with a hole-punch design, however the Galaxy S10 Lite, which is more premium out of the two, uses Super AMOLED Plus display, whereas Galaxy Note 10 Lite has a Super AMOLED display. According to Samsung, “Super AMOLED Plus display creates ergonomic design with thin and light display panel by adopting flexible OLED technology” – whatever that means.

Additionally, the two phones have 4,500mAh battery, 32-megapixel selfie shooter on the front, 6GB and 8GB RAM options, and 128GB of onboard storage. Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite is powered by an unnamed 7nm octa-core processor that is widely believed to be Snapdragon 855, whereas Galaxy Note 10 Lite has a 10nm octa-core SoC. Both phones also feature triple rear cameras, however the setup is different. Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite has 48-megapixel, 5-megapixel, and 12-megapixel image sensors, whereas Galaxy Note 10 Lite comes with three 12-megapixel image sensors.

Flipkart has already started teasing the Galaxy S10 Lite launch in India. It will quite possible that we will get India launch in the next couple of weeks. Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite is likely to find many takers in the country if it is priced aggressively.

CES 2020 preview

CES, the biggest tech fair on the planet, is all set to kick off next week in Las Vegas. While it will open for public on January 7, the CES-related product announcements have already started coming in. We will see the greatest number of news on January 6, the press day. As per the teasers and invites shared by various companies, we expect to hear from OnePlus about its Concept Phone. LG is going to announce a new rollable TV that will roll down from the ceiling.

Additionally, Huami is going to showcase a couple of smartwatches under its Amazfit brand – Bip S and T-Rex. TCL is another company that is going to bring new televisions at the fair and it is said some of those will use Mini-LED screen technology. Sony is also hosting an event where audio products, new TVs, and more are expected. Samsung is busy hyping up the Neon, an “artificial human,” which is not related to Bixby, according to the company. Further, the likes of Intel, Panasonic, Qualcomm, AMD, MSI, Asus, Dell, Flipkart, Amazon, Lenovo, and Seagate are hosting events around CES 2020. As always, we will present at the CES to bring you all the happenings.

In terms of the CES 2020-related announcements that already happened this week. Lenovo has unveiled the refreshed versions of its ThinkPad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad X1 Yoga laptops, whereas Dell has announced updated XPS 13 laptops and a new addition to its Latitude 9100 series. Samsung have introduced the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha as the cheapest model in QLED laptop lineup.

Vivo S1 Pro launched in India

Vivo S1 Pro was launched in India this week and is already on sale. Unlike the Vivo S1, which the new model joins in the S-series, Vivo S1 Pro will be offered both via online and offline sales channels. Vivo has released just one storage variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. It is being offered at Rs. 19,999 in Mystic Black, Jazy Blue, and Dreamy White colour options.

In terms of the specifications, the Vivo S1 Pro runs Android 9 Pie with Funtouch OS 9.2 and features a 6.38-inch full-HD+ (1080×2340 pixels) Super AMOLED display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC.

The phone also comes with a quad rear camera setup that houses 48-megapixel primary shooter with f/1.8 aperture, 8-megapixel secondary shooter with f/2.2 aperture, and two 2-megapixel sensors with f/2.4 lenses for capturing macro and bokeh shots. Vivo has also included 32-megapixel selfie camera sensor at the front. Additionally, you will get in-display fingerprint sensor, and 4,500mAh battery with support for 18W Dual Engine fast charging.

Honor 9X launching in India on January 14

Honor has finally revealed when it plans to bring the Honor 9X to India. The company has sent out invites for the press event on January 14 when it plans to launch the phone in India. Separately, Flipkart has set up a microsite for the smartphone that suggests that the e-retailer will be carrying the phone. As the Honor 9X has already been launched in China, we have a fair idea of what to expect from the phone, however, there is a possibility that there are some differences between the India variant and China variant of the smartphone.

Realme X2 Pro 6GB RAM variant goes on sale

Realme has begun selling a new 6GB RAM variant of its X2 Pro smartphone in India. The new variant’s existence was revealed by the company and its India CEO last month and now, it can be purchased via Flipkart and Realme.com. Realme X2 Pro 6GB RAM variant carries a price tag of Rs. 27,999 and it joins the already available 8GB + 128GB and 12GB + 256GB models. Apart from the lower amount of RAM and 64GB of onboard storage, there is no difference between the newer model and the existing variants of the Realme phone.

Oppo A5 2020 6GB RAM variant release

Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has added another storage variant of its A5 2020 smartphone in its portfolio. The new 6GB RAM variant at Rs. 14,990 joins the existing 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM variants that currently retail at Rs. 11,490 and Rs. 12,990. It is being sold via select offline retailers in the country and will not be widely released, at least right now. As for the specifications, Oppo A5 2020 runs Android 9 Pie with ColorOS 6.0.1 skin on top. The phone features a 6.5-inch HD+ (720 x 1600pixels) display with a waterdrop notch, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC, quad rear camera setup, and 5,000mAh battery.

JioMart debut and other major tech news of the week

Reliance Jio quietly introduced its JioMart grocery delivery service this week. Set to go live in Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Kalyan soon, the service is currently being pitched to Jio customers in these areas. The new venture is touted to offer a portfolio of over 50,000 grocery products along with offerings such as free home delivery against no minimum order value, no questions asked return, and express delivery promise, as highlighted on the official JioMart website.

In other news, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) revealed this week that Reliance Jio added 9.1 million new subscribers in October, taking the telecom operator’s total to over 364 million. In the same period, Vodafone Idea added nearly 1.9 lakh new subscribers and 81,974 subscribers were added by Bharti Airtel.

TRAI also announced the revised tariff rules for DTH and cable TV operators this week that expand the number of channels to be offered under the base network capacity fee (NCF) of Rs. 130 + taxes. Additionally, TRAI has also directly the DTH and cable operators that they cannot charge more than a maximum of 40 percent of the declared NCF for the second and additional TV connections in a single household. There are several other changes as well that will impact both consumers and broadcasters. The new rules are currently slated to go live March 1, 2020.

In other telecom news, Airtel introduced two new prepaid recharge plans at Rs. 279 and Rs. 379. The Rs. 279 prepaid plan brings 1.5GB daily high-speed data allocation and 100 SMS messages per day alongside unlimited voice calls for 28 days. The prepaid plan also includes the term life insurance from HDFC Life as well as additional benefits such as four-week courses from Shaw Academy, access to Wynk Music and premium content through Airtel Xstream. The Rs. 379 Airtel prepaid recharge plan offers 6GB high-speed of total data access, 900 SMS messages, and unlimited voice calls for 84 days. The plan also provides access to four-week courses from Shaw Academy, Wynk Music, and Airtel Xstream app.

Additionally, Airtel discontinued the Rs. 23 as the base recharge pack with a validity. The prepaid customers will now have to recharge with Rs. 45 per 28 days. The new plan includes the same benefits as the Rs. 23 plan that offers local and STD voice calling at 2.5 paise per second, 5 paise per second for national video calls, and 50 paise per MB for data. SMS tariff is at rupee 1 per SMS for local, Rs. 1.5 per SMS for national, and Rs. 5 per SMS for international messages.

BSNL unveiled new broadband plans this week with Rs. 299 and Rs. 491 monthly rental. The Rs. 299 BSNL broadband plan offers 50GB of free data at up to 20Mbps Internet speed. After the data ceiling limit is reached, the speed will be reduced to 1Mbps. The plan will offer unlimited calling to any network across India (local and STD) for free. ISD rates will be at Rs. 1.2 per unit. BSNL says that it will charge users Rs. 500 as security deposit for the new broadband connection. This promotional Rs. 299 broadband plan is valid for six months, and after that users will be migrated to the 2GB CUL plan that is priced at Rs. 399 per month. On the other hand, the Rs. 491 BSNL broadband plan also offers 20Mbps Internet speed, but the data cap goes up to 120GB. After the data limit is reached, the speed is reduced to 1Mbps. Just like the Rs. 299 plan, this one also offers unlimited voice calling benefits, and users will be migrated to the 3GB CUL plans priced at Rs. 499 after six months.

In other news this week, Xiaomi launched a new smartwatch in the form of Mi Watch Color and it joins the already available Mi Watch in the company’s portfolio. Mi Watch Color is only being offered in China right now and there is no word on when it will be released in other markets. The Mi Watch Color will set buyers back by CNY 799 (roughly Rs. 8,000) and comes with features like a 1.39-inch display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels, NFC, 24×7 heart rate tracking, stress monitoring, and sleep tracking.

Lastly, Chandrayaan-3 is happening. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief K Sivan revealed this week that Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission has been approved by the government. The Chandrayaan-3 mission will have a lander and a rover, but not an orbiter. It will have the same configuration as Chandrayaan-2 mission.

Cable TV is an important aspect of Nigerian society as it is not only a source of entertainment but also a source of learning. Today, you can easily find the antennas or dish of several cable TV operators hanging on the roofs or poles of buildings. The service is also a plus to the Nigerian economy as several foreign operators (like Startimes from China) turn sights to the Nigerian market to invest. In this article, I will review the prices of cable TV in Nigeria and list several popular service providers. I will be focusing on the popular ones only as they are more trusted and provide better services compared to the unpopular ones. They also have better signal strength which makes them a better choice.   History of Cable TV in Nigeria Cable TV has gone a long way ever since the first Nigerian TV station, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), began broadcasting in 1959. Back in the days, most Nigerians were limited to only viewing local channels like NTA and had to battle with poor signals when the weather is bad. Cable TV was also quite expensive and could only be afforded by the high class and a section of the middle class. Its GOtv Lite package provides you access to 25 channels for just N400 per month. This is much better than Startimes Nova bouquet, which gives you access to 26 channels for N900 per month. Its most expensive package, GOtv Max package, will cost you just N3,200 for access to all 75 channels in the GOtv directory.   4. TStv TStv is one of the recent Cable TV operators on the market, and it is fast growing. It is quite unique as it offers a different kind of subscription system, which makes it easier for viewers to subscribe to the service. The company also offers several premium features you can only find in decoders of top operators like DStv. One of such features is the program recording feature, which allows you to record programs and store them in your decoder. However, Kwese is quite different from other cable TV operators as it allows you to access content on over 5 devices (like Smartphones, laptops, tablets, etc) when you subscribe to any of its packages.   Prices of Kwese TV Decoders in Nigeria Kwese comes with a satellite dish which makes it more expensive upfront. You will also have to consider installation costs when settling for this option. When buying a Kwese decoder, you will be given the Kwese TV Starter Pack. Acronis is offering free licenses to its Acronis Cyber Files Cloud file sync and share solution to its service provider partners through July 31st.

Avaya is providing 60 days of free access its Avaya Spaces video and collaboration solution and 90 days of free access to several of its unified communications products.

Avaya is also letting businesses convert office-based licenses to its contact center solutions into remote seats for 90 days at no charge. At the end of that period, customers can optionally turn those licenses into monthly subscriptions if they choose.

Axcient is offering its Anchor file sync and share solution free through June. The offer applies to all new users of that product, which provides cloud-based access to individual and shared business documents.

BlackBerry is offering businesses free 60-day licenses to BlackBerry Desktop, which lets users work from a home PC securely, and BlackBerry AtHoc for Employee Safety, a “crisis communications” platform.

Cisco is allowing existing users of the free edition of its Webex videoconferencing solution include up to 100 people in a meeting, versus the previous 50, and conduct meetings for unlimited periods rather than just 40 minutes. The system now supports toll dial-in connections in addition to its native VoIP functionality as well.

Cisco has also begun letting companies with existing deployments of three products exceed their current user limit to accommodate remote workers. The offer applies to the Cisco Umbrella endpoint and network security product, Duo Security multifactor authentication system, and Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobile Client VPN solution. In addition, free 14-day licenses to new users of those products are available now as well. Those offers will remain in effect through June.

CloudOak is providing a free customizable COVID-19 business continuity plan template, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization guidelines, for use with its Plan4Continuity business continuity planning and orchestration solution. To Plan4Continuity subscribers, the offer includes a full-featured Plan4Continuity license that businesses can use to put the COVID-19 plan (and only that plan) into effect.

CoreView is letting businesses and government agencies use two solutions for newcomers to Microsoft Teams at no charge. Good through this September, the offer applies to CoreLearning, the company’s end user training system, and CoreAdoption, which lets businesses execute and measure Teams implementation campaigns. Use the vendor’s also free CoreDiscovery system to sign up for those systems.

DH2i is making DxOdyssey, which lets employees access a work computer from home, available free through at least August 31st. Free support is available until then as well.

Instant Housecall, a maker of remote control software for MSPs and IT providers, has added free sub-accounts to all of its licensing plans. Sub-accounts allow channel pros to give end users remote access to a PC at the office from a PC at home. Already included in some subscriptions, they’re now available free to all Instant Housecall partners until the World Health Organization declares that the global Coronavirus pandemic has ended.

Ingram Micro and 8×8 have rolled out a free web-based video meetings solution offering HD video and audio, unlimited meetings, free dial-in with toll-free numbers, and the ability to store meeting recordings in the cloud.

Intermedia is providing its AnyMeeting Pro videoconferencing solution to new users for free and without meeting time limits through the end of 2020. Through the same offer, organizations can get one free license to Webinar Pro, which lets organizations host larger, live broadcasted events for up to 200 people.

Laplink is offering free and discounted software for Microsoft Windows users who need to migrate files, settings, and user profiles from an outdated or office-bound computer to a remote work laptop. Through June 20th, personal users can get the vendor’s PCmover Express product for free and businesses can buy PCmover Professional at a discounted price.

Microsoft is offering a free six-month trial edition of its Office 365 E1 plan, which normally sells for $8 per user a month. Though the subscription includes Outlook Online, web-based versions of other Microsoft Office applications, and a OneDrive for Business file sync and share account, among other components, the main idea behind the promotion is to give organizations with remote employees access to the online meetings, content sharing, and other collaboration features in Microsoft Teams.

Vonage is making a new video meetings tool called Vonage Free Conferencing available to anyone at no cost for up to 90 days. In addition, up to 250 mobile-only licenses to the vendor’s more full-featured Vonage Business Communications product are now available through the Vonage Business Continuity offer for up to 90 days.

Wildix is letting businesses use a unified communications suite called the smart working package free for six months.

Zoho has launched a Small Business Emergency Subscription Assistance Program that will let up to 20,000 qualified paying customers worldwide with 25 employees or less use all of the cloud-based productivity software they run today free of charge for up to three months.

REMOTE SECURITY AND BACKUP SOLUTIONS

Arcserve is providing free use of its Arcserve Cloud Direct backup solution, plus 5TB of storage, free for 120 days.

BlackBerry is offering free licenses for 60 days to BlackBerry Protect, an endpoint security solution, as well as SecuSUITE and SecuSUITE for Government, its secure messaging and phone call systems.

Carbonite is extending trial deployments of Carbonite Endpoint Protection and Carbonite Backup for Microsoft Office 365 initiated after April 1st for 60 extra days.

ESET is extending the free trial period from 30 days to 90 days for its ESET Secure Authentication solution, and from 30 days to 90 days for its ESET Dynamic Threat Detection solution as well for users with more than 100 seats.

GFI is supplying three months of free access for an unlimited number of remote workers to its Kerio Control VPN solution, plus 30 days of free access to Kerio Control’s AntiVirus and WebFilter capabilities.

Kaspersky is giving 180 days of free access to a trial version of its Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365 product, which now includes protection for Microsoft Teams and SharePoint.

MSP360 is letting MSPs run its Managed Backup for Desktop product free on Windows endpoints free for 90 days, if installed before May.

PC Matic is providing its PC Matic PRO Endpoint Suite, which combines white list endpoint protection with remote control and patch management functionality, to businesses with 10 or more remote workstations at no charge. The offer is open both to MSPs and their customers, and includes free onboarding and support services.

SentinelOne is offering its endpoint detection and response solution free of charge through May 16th.

Trustifi is making free 90-day licenses to its email encryption solutions available to companies with 50 or more employees. The offer is designed to help telecommuters exchange sensitive information securely over home networks through Outlook Online and Google Gmail. There is no obligation to purchase, the company says, at the end of the trial period.

Unitrends is offering 50% off its Cloud Backup product, plus 50% off sister company Spanning’s Office 365 Backup solution and 50% off parent company Kaseya’s Virtual Systems Administrator RMM tool.

Vectra is providing free Office 365 account takeover detection services through May 31st.

Webroot is offering free access to Webroot Business Endpoint Protection, Webroot DNS Protection, and Webroot Security Awareness Training for 60 days.

Zix and AppRiver are providing free access to Zix’s Healthyemail Encrypted Messaging Service.

Addigy is offering free 60-day licenses to its cloud-based Apple device management platform.

ViewSonic is supplying its myViewBoard distance learning software free to K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.

Vonage is offering three free months of Vonage Business Communications service to educational, healthcare, and non-profit organizations in the U.S., U.K., and Australia.

HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY SOLUTIONS

BitDefender is making all of its products available to doctors, hospitals, dentists, and other healthcare providers of any size for free. Large healthcare organizations can also get professional services and advanced technologies like network traffic security and analytics from BitDefender at no cost. The offer is good through at least June, at which time BitDefender will optionally extend access to a total of 12 months based on customer need.

Hornetsecurity is offering its email security services free of charge to healthcare providers through the end of the year.

Kaspersky is providing Kaspersky Endpoint Security Cloud Plus, Kaspersky Security for Microsoft Office 365, Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business Advanced, and Kaspersky Hybrid Cloud Security free to healthcare providers for six months.

Netsparker is letting anyone directly involved in the fight against COVID-19 use its Netsparker Team web security platform for free. Eligible beneficiaries include government agencies, medical equipment providers, news providers, vaccine researchers, medical researchers, patient care providers, hospitals, emergency first responders, food delivery services, and more.

Vonage has created an SMS alert solution that delivers real-time updates from the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and other government agencies to end users anywhere. Specifically developed in response to the COVID-19 crisis, the service is available free to healthcare providers, communities, and government agencies worldwide. Zerto is giving healthcare providers, essential service providers, and state and local governments free data protection for up to 50 virtual machines through its IT Resilience solution, plus premium support, until September 30th.

ATEM Mini Pro-great new functionsסdvanced settings-questions answered

Blackmagic just announced its upgraded ATEM Mini Pro audio/video mixer (switcher) with a palindromic price of US$595. It has some amazing new features which I’ll cover ahead. I’ll cover advanced settings via an editable XML file, and some of its parameters. I had several questions for Blackmagic after watching the presentation and reading the specs. I’ll share those questions and partial answers ahead.

About standalone hardware encoders for live streaming

Since at least 2015 when I published Live streaming essentials from your multicam studio, I have covered the virtues of using an external streaming encoder, rather than having a computer do it. Blackmagic mentioned the benefit of fewer (or zero) dropped frames. I covered other benefits in that article, white papers and in my much more recent Review: Ecamm Live, a multicam mixer/switcher for macOS featuring NDI from NewTek.

One of the external encoder models I covered is the Matrox Monarch HDX shown above (US$1295 Amazon — B&H). The Matrox Monarch HDX is capable of streaming 1080p at a maximum data rate of 20 Mb/s (megabits per second) with H.264. Of course, you can set it to be lower, depending upon your available upload speed from your ISP (Internet service provider) from wherever you are broadcasting. In fact (for example), YouTube Live only recommends 3000-6000 Kbps (which translates to 3-6 Mb per second) for lower framerate 1080p (i.e. the range between 23.976p and 29.97p) and 4500-9000 Kbps (4.5-9 Mb/s) for higher framerate 1080p (i.e. between 50p and 59.94p).

If I have the available bandwidth (for live broadcasting) or the necessary time (for uploading a pre-recorded video file to a server like YouTube or Vimeo), I always prefer to send the least compressed version possible, knowing that the platform will be re-encoding it. I want to minimize generation loss. That’s why when I upload a short video I just edited either to YouTube or Vimeo, I generally do it in the ProRes 422 códec, since that is much less compressed than any H.264 or H.265 file although it is much heavier.

The factory presets on the ATEM Mini Pro also max out at 9 Mb/s. This indeed matches what YouTube Live recommends. However, it is not yet clear what the maximum bitrate the hardware is capable of, since savvy users can create our own presets by editing the XML file provided by Blackmagic. I hope that it will allow much higher than 9 Mb/s and perhaps as high as 20 Mb/s as offered by the Matrox Monarch HDX covered above. I’ll cover more about the power of the XML file in the next section.

The power of the MXL file for the ATEM Mini Pro

As I began to cover in the prior section, Blackmagic has thankfully included the possibility for advanced users to edit a supplied XML file to create our own presets. The updated March 2020 manual says that this can be used to add other streaming services (not included in the factory presets) and to customize the streaming menu with low level settings.

I specifically asked Blackmagic whether two specific things are possible with the XML file:

To set the maximum bitrate for 1080p to be much higher than 9 MB/s.

To set the output framerate manually (details below).

The way the ATEM Mini (Pro) is designed to facilitate use for novice users by detecting the incoming framerate from the first camera source and set the output framerate to match. That is a great approach if that first camera source is an “outgoing” 1080p camera, which can actually output its set framerate natively over HDMI. Sadly (as I have covered in many prior articles), a very high number of 1080p cameras were designed with ultra-conservatism in mind, and they are “shy”, meaning that:

Even though the camera is set to image and record internally at 29.97p, over HDMI they output either 29.97PsF (which appears to be 59.94i) or 59.94p (repeating each frame).

Even though the camera is set to image and record internally at 25p, over HDMI they output either 25PsF (which appears to be 50i) or 50p (repeating each frame).

Even though the camera is set to image and record internally at 23.976p, over HDMI they output either 59.94i or 59.94p.

In addition to avoiding unnecessary and undesired de-interlacing (see my Blackmagic ATEM Mini video mixer with SHY 1080p cameras illustrated above), we also want to avoid streaming double the framerate due to a misunderstanding. The case of the duplicate frame situation (where 25p is doubled to 50p, and 29.97p is doubled to 59.94p), this is less complex to fix than the other two situations described: Just force the ATEM Mini Pro to be at the original desired framerate, so it will skip each extra frame.

Blackmagic responded that yes, we can set the output framerate in the XML file. Regarding editing the XML file, Blackmagic warns:

The XML file cannot be edited using native OS editors like Textedit, Notepad or Wordpad. You need to use an app that doesn’t put invisible characters in the file or some values will get corrupt.

You can use BBEdit.

It’s 2020: Where’s is the H.265?

TÉPPER: Although I have seen H.265 in some other Blackmagic products, I don’t see it for the ATEM Mini Pro. Could you please comment about why no inclusion of H.265 to stream from the ATEM Mini Pro to the CDN, knowing that the CDN is going to re-encode it anyway? Or will H.265 encoding be included via a firmware update in the future?

BLACKMAGIC: We built H.265 encoding for 4K/UHD, whereas H.264 is much more commonly used for HD and it’s more widely used in the majority of the streaming market. We don’t comment on future products or plans.

Dolby Digital and DTS - So what is the difference?

There’s a surround sound battle going on in Home Cinema’s throughout the world.

Surround sound in the home came about in 1982 with the introduction of Dolby Surround which consisted of three channels, left, right and surround. The surround channel could be sent to two speakers so that a four speaker system surrounded the viewer. As home cinema has progressed many new formats have sprung up over the years each iteration bringing or promising to bring better detail, resolution and dynamics with improved sound quality.

Currently the biggest two sound formats are DTS and Dolby Digital. These are primarily audio compression technologies, allowing movie makers to record surround sound that can be reproduced in cinemas as well as homes. Both deliver spine-tingling multi-channel sound, so what's the difference? And which is better?

DTS is encoded at a higher bit rate and therefore is considered by many to be of higher quality. Although there is an argument that Dolby Digital's technology is actually more advanced, and can potentially produces better sound quality at a lower bit rate.

As a consumer it can be confusing to see these different formats and the many offshoots of the technologies but you don’t generally have to choose one.

In their most basic form, both DTS and Dolby Digital support 5.1-channel audio (in a home cinema this is the front left, centre, right, surround left and surround right and discrete subwoofer channel (that’s the .1)). More advanced versions of these formats can support 7.1-channels, HD surround sound, extra subwoofers and even separate overhead speakers, in the form of DTS:X and Dolby Atmos.

What is Dolby Digital?

Dolby Digital is a multi-channel audio codec by Dolby Labs. It delivers a cinematic surround sound experience and is commonly referred to as the 'industry standard' (primarily because Dolby Labs has been around longer than DTS).

The first film to use Dolby Digital was Batman Returns in 1992. Since then, Dolby has released a slew of increasingly advanced codecs including Dolby Digital Plus, which supports HD surround sound and up to 7.1 speaker channels.

Want the best? Try Dolby TrueHD, a lossless format that promises to be identical to the movie studio's master recording. There's also the next-gen, object-based audio system, Dolby Atmos.

What is DTS?

DTS (originally Digital Theater Systems) was founded in 1993 to compete with Dolby Labs for surround sound supremacy. The company got its big break when Steven Spielberg chose DTS for his dino-romp, Jurassic Park.

In 1996, DTS began cropping up in consumer hardware. The company might not be as well known as its main rival, but many purists believe that DTS offers better sound quality because it encodes audio at higher bit rates.

Like Dolby Digital, DTS has since released a plethora of more advanced surround sound formats including DTS-HD High Resolution, which supports up to 7.1 speaker channels. DTS has also brought out a lossless format, DTS-HD Master Audio. There's also DTS:X, which competes with Dolby's Atmos.

What is the difference between DTS and Dolby Digital?

Dolby Digital and DTS can both deliver fantastic surround sound experiences – but there are some key differences in the way that they achieve that end result.

The major differences are the compression levels and bit rates. Dolby Digital compresses 5.1 digital audio down to a bit rate of 640 kbits/s (kilobits per second) for Blu-ray discs. For DVD discs, it supports a slightly lower bit rate: up to 448 kbits/s.

DTS on the other hand, is less compressed and supports higher bit rates of up to 1.5Mb/s (megabits per second). For DVD discs, it supports up to 768 kbits/s.

The compression gap widens when you step up to the competing HD formats. Dolby Digital Plus supports up to 1.7Mbps, while DTS-HD High Resolution supports up to 6Mb/s. In theory, less compression during encoding equals more detailed audio that delivers a soundtrack closer to what was originally intended.

Case closed, then? Not so fast. Dolby argues that its codecs are more efficient than DTS codecs, and thus can sound every bit as good or better, even at a lower bit rate.

Ultimately, you can expect a fine home cinema experience from both, and often your choice of soundtrack will come down to whichever is supported by your source material.

DTS:X vs Dolby Atmos

These cutting-edge home cinema audio technologies are a step up from traditional surround sound. They recreate object-based effects, such as a plane flying overhead or bullets zinging around the room, thanks to multiple audio signals aimed at set-ups with a greater number of speakers than the standard 5.1.

Again, both should create an immersive experience, but there are some crucial differences between the two.

Dolby Atmos uses speakers placed in the ceiling to create to create a 'bubble' of sound. Not keen to cut holes in your ceiling? There's a range of simpler options including Dolby Atmos soundbars with upfiring drivers that bounce the sound of the ceiling to similar effect, and upfiring modules that you can add to traditional speakers.

You can find Dolby Atmos products from an increasing number of hardware manufacturers, as well as across Blu-ray discs and streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. TV broadcasters are beginning to support Atmos, too.

DTS:X is a bit more flexible. It works with standard surround sound set-ups and doesn't require extra overhead speakers. You can also manually adjust sound objects, meaning you can crank up the volume of voices on a soundtrack making it easier to hear dialogue over loud effects.

Around 90% of the home AV industry is supporting DTS:X, with many manufacturers either releasing firmware updates for existing receivers, or launching new models. The downside? It's less common. And neither Amazon Prime Video nor Netflix currently support DTS:X.

Which is better: DTS or Dolby Digital?

Based on the specs alone, DTS beats its rival with higher bit rates that promise a more realistic movie experience. That said, other factors such as signal to noise ratio and speaker calibration mean that plenty of audiophiles would rate Dolby above DTS.

With standards constantly evolving, the best way to upgrade your movie night is to ensure you have a good-quality components, set up properly and fed the highest possible source material. That way, whether it's DTS:X or Dolby Atmos, you'll be treated to thrilling home cinema entertainment.

The next-gen resolution is looking like the year’s biggest TV news, with the first 8K displays making it to market at the end of 2018, and pretty much every big manufacturer floating their first 8K wears in 2019 ahead of the first planned in 2020.

But is 8K something that you should care about right now? We’ve broken down everything you need to know about TV’s next big thing.

What is 8K and why should I care about 8K TVs?

When we talk about 8K, we’re talking about the resolution of the screen we’re looking at, which equates to the number of horizontal and vertical pixels that a screen can display.

The more pixels of an image we see, the better quality the image should be, as you’re getting more of the finer detail that lesser screens gloss over.

With 8K, you get a total resolution of 7680 pixels horizontally and 4320 pixels vertically – four times the pixels you’ll get with 4K (2840 x 2160) and 16 times that of Full HD (1920 x 1080).

4K vs 8K: Isn’t 4K enough?

4K is superb, and if you haven’t upgraded your home TV to 4K yet, you’ll be amazed at the differences between 4K content and the Full HD you’ve been watching. In theory, 8K will offer a similar leap.

The differences might not be quite as stark, but when you’re looking to get the most immersive experience possible, the more detail you can pack into a shot, the better.

In practical terms, it’s the difference between looking at an 8-megapixel picture and a 33-megapixel picture – with an HD picture being just 2 megapixels by comparison. For the naysayers doubting whether those extra pixels will be worth it, we’d argue there’s a good chance they will.

What 8K TVs are there? When will 8K TVs be released?

Manufacturers have been talking about 8K before 4K was even really established, but in 2018 things started to get more serious.

Sharp is already on its second-generation 8K television, producing the £100,000, 85-inch LV-85001 for the Japanese market a few years ago now, it’s familiar household manufacturers like Samsung and LG showcasing more consumer-focused sets that have really got interests piqued.

Unbelievably, the Samsung Q900R came to market at the end of 2018, including in the UK, where it was available in time for Christmas.

LG is setting itself a more leisurely timeline, predicting five million sets will be sold by 2022, but equally it’s offering up its first 8K TV at CES 2019.  Toshiba and Sony have also shown off concept 8K sets at recent shows, but they remain very much in the planning stages for now.

How much with an 8K TV cost?

The Samsung Q900R will be available in an 85-inch model to begin with, followed by 82-, 75- and 65-inch versions at a later date.

No prices have been announced for any of them just yet, but we predict you’re going to have to set aside a fairly hefty budget if you want to bring one of these home in time for the holidays – as a rough idea, Sharp’s existing 70-inch 8K TV costs €11,199.

Does 8K need a big screen?

The average size of our TVs has been slowly shifting upwards in recent years. That’s down to a combination of reduced prices, improved design, and higher quality picture resolution.

As screens get larger, pixel density decreases, soo higher resolutions simply make more sense on bigger TVs.

That explains why the majority of  8K demos have been shown on screens of 85 inches and above, although as we’ve mentioned, Samsung has announced its Q900R will eventually be available in a more accessible 65 inches – much more living room friendly, and no doubt much cheaper too.

What can I watch in 8K?

Long story short? There isn’t really any 8K content right now, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t on its way.

Japan (where else?) ran some 8K demo broadcasts on its TV channel NHK back in 2016, and has since announced plans for a dedicated 8K TV channel later this year, where Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic Games will be broadcast in the format.

Brazil even showed some of the 2018 World Cup in 8K, at Rio de Janeiro’s science museum, though the tech support required to make it happen was far from straightforward, so it’s not exactly ready for mass consumption just yet.

From a film perspective, Hollywood has already dipped its toe in the water with 8K – just as it started with 4K long before that was really a ‘thing’.

Currently, it’s mostly to give editors more options in the editing suite than it is for actually producing an 8K movie, but the equipment is out there to make these kinds of films happen when the time is right.

In fact, the first one is already in the can. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) was the first film to be shot on RED’s 8K Vista Vision camera, and we expect to see plenty more following in its footsteps in the next year or two.

There’s also things like VR to think about. The £4200 GoPro Omni VR might not be in many budgets, but it is capable of shooting at an 8K 30fps spherical resolution for VR. The Insta360 Pro camera offers similar virtual reality shooting, while the oft-rumoured Apple AR/VR headset is thought to be packing dual 8K displays – one for each eye.

Gaming isn’t one for lagging behind the curve, either, with a plethora of YouTube videos showing 8K–- and, whisper it, even 16K – gaming rigs. The Dell Canvas UP3218K gaming monitor is 8K capable, but the hardware to make it happen is slightly more complicated.

A Thirty IR Witcher III playthrough in 8K last year required four Nvidia GTX Titan Xp graphics cards costing $1200 each to achieve – and that’s before you even get to the processor and memory required. Hardly a hobby, for now at least.

What else is happening right now? What is 8K upscaling?

With so little content currently available, 8K right now is really all about upscaling, and from what we’ve seen at recent shows, the results can be pretty impressive.

For example, Samsung’s Q900R uses the company’s new Quantum Processor 8K chip, which uses ‘AI upscaling’ to boost lower-res footage to 8K.

This uses complex algorithms to recognise patterns in images and calculate the extra pixels required to fill in the gaps that 4K (or even HD) is missing. The chip uses a huge image database, which Samsung says will be constantly updated to keep it as accurate as possible.

Sony showed off similarly impressive upscaling at CES 2018 using a concept 8K panel and its forthcoming X1 Ultimate processor, though that remains very much a ‘watch this space’ endeavour for now.

8K vs 4K TVs: Should I buy a 4K TV or wait for 8K?

That’s the big question and, for now at least, the answer is pretty clear cut.

As there’s not really any true 8K content yet, you’d only really be buying an 8K TV for bragging rights and to get a glimpse of its potential via upscaling – we’re still a long way from seeing 8K hit the mainstream. After all, there’s only really one 8K TV you can likely buy!

Remember: 4K is still far from ubiquitous, and given the amount of investment in the technology by major networks, studios and companies, it’s extremely unlikely it will be usurped any time soon in the consumer market.

Those wanting to get the most out of their TV viewing experience right now should therefore buy 4K – whether it’s as an upgrade from Full HD or a ‘good to great’ 4K swap. There are loads of great affordable options out there, like the Panasonic TX-50CX680, and you’re spoilt for choice if you can stretch to a high-end Ultra HD set (the Samsung Q9FN and LG G8 OLED spring to mind).

The 8K vs 4K TV battle may now be nascent, but buying a quality 4K TV will serve you well for some time and comes as our recommendation for most people.
