RWBY V8E5 LiveThoughts

And now for the last episode before the HUGE break they’re taking. Seriously, February? Damn, whats going on at RT?

It matters not. Lets see what this weeks episode has for us.

And here we see Aminety Colloseum, the place that Atlas SHOULD have weaponized the moment it rolled its way back here. Seriously look at it; floating free away from everything else...you could mount missile launchers and laser batteries and CIWS batteries on it, launch fighters from it, let dropships deploy through its base...a floating aircraft carrier of unprecidented size.

Or maybe turn it into a weapon...use its drive system to focus Dust energy into some kind of gravitational force...thats just me though.

Missed oppertunites...ah well.

You CAN see its been adjusted though, it looks less like the sports arena from its last apperance and more like a floating coms hub, with those dishes on the outside and the huge spire.

Intersetingly if you look in the upper right corner the moon is there but almost completely covered by the storm Salem summoned. Interesting.

Wait why is PEITRO out there? With like...no supports? Seems kinda dangerous to send the weak old dude out there...

...thats a bomb. A Dust bomb in pipe bomb style form but thats very much a bomb. Yes, Penny, danger indeed.

Atmospheric orbit. Ahhh that must be the low-level orbit path that they need to ensure it doesnt loose power. The part where you coast along with almost no drag. Like what the X-15 hit in our world, and punched through at least once.

WAIT WHAT THE HELL IS THAT. Thats some kind of loader mech. THATS A FUCKING UTILITY TITAN. WHEN DID ATLAS GET ONE OF THOSE?!

Also thats a jet engine.

And Maria’s piloting it. To quote Daimon Baird; I know wha thappens when you let an angry chick loose with a power loader.

Multiple bombs...wait. Thats the mine that RWBY fought in with the Aces, the one that almost blew the fuck up. They’re... Oh. I get it now. They’re gonna use the blast to fling Amneity into upper orbit and stabalize it. Clever. Not exactly SAFE, but clever. Just hope the mine doesnt go anywhere important. Those tunnels are going to turn into firestorms.

Cute, she thinks she can stay and help. Trust me, Penny. You’re better off running.

MARIA CASUALLY DOING THE MEXICAN GRANDMOTHER THING WITH HER MECH...THE HIP HAND. MY GOD.

Oh, and his chair has gravity restraints too. They...gonna handle the impact of the launch? I mean thats literally a fuel/air bomb under them. Dust/air...

Well Maria seems alright with it.

OH GOD DAMMIT. Its Cinder isnt it? Fucking bitch...

On the positive side if she DOES hitch a ride then they get a chance to give her the ol’ “Long fall special”. Lets see your maiden powers save you from a fall from near orbit.

Well then, she burned right through the floor. Interesting. Maiden powers or her own, who knows...I do admit seeing her ride the ship in like that is kinda cool.

The eagerness in Cinders remaining eye interest me. Also, even when using maiden powers, her dead eye emits nothing. So that whole parts just gone.

Secondary note, I think they’re standing on the...Shade emblem? Shade is the swords I think. Vale is the axes, Atlas is the staff, Havens the lamp. Doubt it means anything.

Ahhh, okay I was gonna say, that launch was...kinda lackluster. But the blast is being used as a BOOST on top of the four existing external thrusters. Like the yellow emergency turbines on the outside of the Pillar of Autumn in the end cutscene of Halo Reach

Dust explodes in its own individual colors. The blast under them looks like a Pride festival.

Also Penny just going WHAP like that amuses me, whereas Cinder just crouches. Guess she knew what was coming.

I dont see how the blast is helping through...maybe its the pressure wave and we cant see it right.

Now THAT is a command and control table!

Based on the image I can see, the map is showing “Atlas Mantle” in the middle in green, Aminety in red to the north, and the whale as its own red marker just off to the west a bit of Atlas/Mantle. So now we know where everything is stationed.

The scales all kindsa weird tho

Ah THERES the G-force. Emeralds literally stuck to the floor.

And because Cinders an unoriginal bitch, fire swords. Im not impressed ot say the least. On a side note that DOES mean that radiobandit was right about her powers, so theres that. I’d wager this is a combination of her semblance and the maiden abilities.

For those who follow me, Cinder’s blades here are similar in look to what Ash Vulcan can summon, minus the fire. His are more of a cooled obsidian look. They are, however, as sharp as these are, but much less sturdy. Ex; the one that pins itself to the wall by Penny’s head would have shattered on impact, which Ash uses as a secondary ability. Because no one likes a hundred glass shards in their eyes...

OH HELL YES. Maria with the mech. Now, Cinder...TASTE METAL FIST.

RT...I salute you. Angry mother figure piloting a giant robot screaming “get away from her you bitch”. ALMOST had it. Almost.

What smacked into her though. Neo?

Yes, Neo piloting their escape craft. Interseting.

Emerald looks completely useless and confused and Neo is suddenly very much in a realization shes inside a tin can and MARIA IS OPERATING A GIANT TIN CAN OPENER

Emeralds semblance works on Maria. Interseting, so it must bypass eyes. Effect the brain specifically. Note to self for Chrys on that...

WHY did Neo take Ruby’s form when shes fighting Maria? On that Maria seems very happy to brawl on the ground now. Old habits die hard, I guess.

Additional math note; “broadcasting range” is, by this numerical, 543.523 of...whatever Remnant uses as units. On Earth, the edge of outerspace is almost exactly 100 km, or 62 miles, straight up. So going by that measurement... (Doing the math here hang on)...1 km is equal to 5.43 of Remnants distance units. Lets just say 5.5. Assuming Remnants edge is the same (but everything we’ve seen so far hints that it is, or at least very close)

Alternatively, since we heard klicks used in V4, but miles used in After The Fall, we can assume this is one of those, meaning that either broadcast altitude on Remnant is ABSURDLY HIGH, because 500km is literally 5 times the edge of space on earth, and 540 miles is ALMOST 9 TIMES AS HIGH. Either way Im pretty sure this is the first measurement of Remnants units we’ve seen.

Alternatively alternatively, judging by the arrows we see, these might be required velocity to maintain orbit, which MAY make a bit more sense but it doesnt really fit. Low orbital velocity on earth for example is 17,000 KPH. Even with the math above, theres still a TITANIC difference.

And now we see the numvers going down again because CINDER BURNED A HOLE IN THROUGH ONE OF THE STABALIZERS. Bitch.

Again on th e weaponizing the colleseum; look at all this empty space. They didnt even remove it from when it was a consorse for the festival. You could put SO MANY weapon emplacements...the landing pads are still there!

Oh so now Cinders a Dawnblade from RWBY is she.

And exploding arrows too. Alright then, sure, why not.

Not sure what the point of this little bit was, aside from Penny trying to draw Cinder off and Cinder going back because...evil? Bait for Penny? Who knows.

Oh yeah, Marias having a GOOD time. Also, Neos face when she gets kicked in it; “NO, NOT THE SANDEL!”

Also the disrespect from Maria. Yes. Suck it, Neo.

Also theres some timeskippage, as there is NOT a 2 minute gap between when we see the clock the first time and when we see it now. I dont think, anyway. Im sure theres math to be done but it serves the purpose its suppose to, for tension.

Uhhhh...Cinder, please. Your Salem’s most bottom of bitches right now. She favors Hazel and Tyrian over you.

Cinder stealing the maiden powers reminds me of the Grip of the Devourer perk from the Necromatic Grips in Destiny 2. Mainly the green energy flowing. I know thats Pennys aura stuff but it does remind me.

Ahhh they got a plan with Emerald then. Interesting. Also Neo taking advantage of a distraction sounds like her.

And Penny ONESHOTS Neo. Lets be real here, without aura? She’d be LIQUID. Or maybe ash. Not sure how Penny’s funnels (THEYRE STILL FUCKING FUNNELS DAMMIT) works.

Annnnddd you forgot shes a robot and sees aura didn’t you. Again, without aura, she’d be dead. Actually, she might legit be dead considering that scream. That sounds like the noise someone makes as their organs are fried by high intensity radiation. Not too mention the MASSIVE BURN MARK on the back wall there.

Either way; GET FUCKED BITCH.

Very dramatic, Emerald, but really, come on. Penny has lasers. You would get maybe one more shot (from a weapon that has, at best from my viewpoint) a caliber equal to MAYBE a 9mm pistol. That stuff doesnt have the penetration power required.

If Penny wasn’t nice and more interested in saving Peitro...you’d be dead. Ripped asunder and Cinder made even worse.

A pity, really, Penny has a heart. But...hey. Real girl.

Holy shit, that map wasnt lying. That whale’s almost as big as Atlas is from this angle. Mind you, might just be a trick of the location but it would make sense if they were afraid of a Grimm THAT GOD DAMN BIG. I was just seeing it as like, about the size of a normal sperm whale, maybe as big as the Leviathan from the series of the same name, but even that was barely 150 feet long. This things HUGE.

Nope. Pretty sure its about the same size as Atlas is long.

Also the Moon seems smaller from this angle oddly enough.

Wait is she gonna superman this fucking thing?

Okay yes, the numbers were based on distance not velocity, as Penny is pushing the stadium UP, rather than accelerating it in proper stance.

The noises she makes...huh. Glad my sister didnt walk in on those. Sounds...not like someone straining.

Note about the message; whos the chick with the eye patch next to the faunus in the back left of Ruby.

Im going to assume the first place we see the message played is the Mistral Black Market. Seems fitting for how it is, and the design matches Havens ascetic.

Also in that same shot we see the old Karen from two episodes ago, a mouse girl, Fiona’s mole uncle, and someone new I think. Plus the huge eared girls mom who has a fox tail. And also one of the thirsty moms and her kid maybe?

Hey, Sun and Neptune! Out in the middle of nowhere in Vacuo. So this is the first time we’ve seen it in the show.

And Ilia’s still alive too!

Hey and Goodwytch too. No voice, of course...she got fired ages ago.

Also hey, so this is where Ironwoods been. I love how Hare turns it off before Ruby finishes.

I will note that technically Ruby’s not wrong. Ironwood cant be trusted. But then, he couldnt before because (gestures to Atlas’s pathetic, scraggy SOFT “military” instead of THE CHAD FORCES OF...uh...) (Rapid sounds of shuffling papers and files labeled “UNSC” “Coalition of Ordered Governments” “SRPA” “GAR” and “Yukon Confederacy” fly off the table)

Several others. Yes. Lets go with that. (Accidentally bumps paper labeled “Vanguard” off the desk)

Watts is back out I see too.

Wait wait wait. Penny’s blades operate via chips...part of her, sure. So WHY does she need wires on them? AGAIN. WHY ARE THEY WIRE FUNNELS AND NOT SEPERATE ONES.

Interestingly the inside of the one Watts has resembles a Scroll...did Peitro commender that technology?

No focusing system for the laser. No chamber for acceleration or direction. Odd.

Salem looks oddly glad for this. Probably cause she thinks this is going to spread more fear.

And Ruby gets to the heart of the deal. You dont beat something that cant be killed. You capture it. Hurt it. BREAK IT. A sentient being can only take so much punishment before it shatters into madness and controllable fragments. You just. Need. To. Hit. It. HARD. ENOUGH.

Additionally Ruby’s got a point there too. Salem played the shadows until this moment when everything was going her way. So...whats she afraid of.

Annnnddd thats all it takes to hijack Penny? Seriously.

Wait hold on a second. She catches fire literally two seconds after she falls? You gotta fall a bit more than that for shit to start happening. WHAT THE FUCK IS REMNANTS ATMOSPHERE?! Or is it just dramatic...

Also as a small note the way the coms between her and Peitro cut off like that is accurate to reentry; during the hottest part of a splashdown, a space craft creates such a huge trail of energy behind it, rattling and burning its way down, it creates a blackout with its own passage. So based on the massive Apollo style reentry fire cone shes already putting out shes most likely going to be out of coms until she slows down orrrrrr craters into Remnants surface with the force of a meteor.

And no. I dont think shes dead. The fact that, DESPITE being surrounded by the kind of fireball that worked its way into the fueltank of the space shuttle Discovery and blew it and its crew to bits on reentry, she was still intact...shes probably going to be fine.

Hacked, certainly, but fine. It takes more than that to finish her. Besides now that shes hacked, she has to fight Ruby. We all want that right?

Ahh good to see Winter in full armor now. Or...close to it. Im sure some of its a support rig for her injuries but I like to think this is the start of Atlas’s Specialist Weaponization Program.

Ironwood makes a good call here. Same thought process as mine.

Salutes in this world are the same as ours. Interesting. Must change that for the HKs

Annnndd of course Watts steals the busted Scroll because IRONWOOD IS A FUCKING DUMBASS

Im...not even going to COMMENT on what the FUCK this thing is that Jaunes detachment found.

Ladies and gentlemen...Salem is, officially, THE WORST VILLAN. OF ALL TIME.

The level of incompetence and stupidity I have seen here today completely obliterates the LAST person to hold that title, President Snow from the Hunger Games.

The amount of unnececary back door work and seecret plotting here astounds me. Shes doing this because she can, Im SURE of it. Theres no other reason.

Unless...she kows in a straight out fight, she’d have Ironwoods metal arm up to her colon in seconds. Which I wouldnt be surprised about.

Either way uh...thats it. Thats the end of the episode.

Actually, I feel like talking a lot about that fanmade Transformers continuity I was cooking up. It was sick.

So, in the beginning, there were six forces. They had no agenda, for they had no sentience. They were just forces. Those forces were Chaos, Order, Unity, Complexity, Simplicity, and Invention. Over time, the forces’ power leaked, and formed the Gods, one for each force:

Hytherion, the God of Unity

Gaea, the God of Invention

Atlas, the God of Simplicity

Devil-Z, the God of Complexity

Primus, the God of Order

and Unicron, the God of Chaos

I didn’t make up any of these names, by the way; they’re all taken from Transformers canon. I mean, yeah, Gaea and Atlas come even earlier from actual mythologies, but you know what I mean. Though, I definitely made up a lot of their details.

Anyways, the Gods were sentient, and did have agendas. And Primus and Unicron came into direct conflict. In order to break their infinite stalemate, Primus created the Transformers- thirteen lifeforms that could help him beat Unicron. After they did, Unicron created the Terrorcon Virus (which basically turned Transformers into zombies) and infected one of the Thirteen, Deceptus, turning him into the Fallen, so the rest of the Thirteen went into hiding in various ways. One of them basically pulled a Diavolo, where he controlled a major criminal organization from behind the scenes where nobody ever saw the Boss so they had no reason to suspect he was this ancient mythological figure, though they were actually pirates rather than the mafia. One of the Thirteen was actually a Pretender, so the human sidekick of the Autobots would eventually pull a Sari Sumdac and be revealed to be that one, having erased her own memory. Et cetera.

Anyways, that’s all backstory. The story actually starts on Cybertron in the present day. The Autobots and Decepticons exist, but are not actually at war; rather, they’re nationalities. “Autobot” is the term for Transformers from the Iacon region of Cybertron, while “Decepticon” is the term for Transformers from the Kaon region of Cybertron.

The Autobot government is led by the Prime, an elected title. When an Autobot is elected Prime, their name is altered so that it ends with “-us Prime”. When they lose their Prime status, the “Prime” is lost, but not the “-us”. For instance, the current Prime is Rodimus Prime, formerly known as Hot Rod, and if he lost his title, it would become Hot Rodimus.

The Decepticon government is also weird. There aren’t as many name shenanigans there, though the government itself is slightly more complex, having two leading bodies. There’s the Council, which is elected democratically, as well as the Emperor, a title that is passed on via combat- you defeat the Emperor, you become the Emperor. The current Emperor is the fairly benevolent Cryotek.

Immigration/defection is a thing. Autobots who decide to become Decepticons are called Iaconian Decepticons, and the reverse are called Kaonian Autobots.

The two leaders also both have Minicon partners. Rodimus’s partner is a Powermaster known as Orion Pax. Powermasters are Armada-style Minicons who turn into tiny vehicles and give bigger robots power-ups. Meanwhile, Cryotek’s partner is a Targetmaster known as Megatronus. Targetmasters are Minicons who turn into weapons for larger robots. The two partners seem to get along just fine...

...but in secret, Megatronus is working to overthrow Cryotek. His scientist friend, Shockwave, has basically invented a new kind of Minicon that has never existed before- Brainmasters, which transform into internal computers and faces for larger mindless Transtectors. He is converted into one of these Brainmasters (as well as a few of his followers) and changes his name to Megatron, then overthrows Cryotek... and instantly starts turning Kaon into a fascist state, which includes murdering the entire Council (as far as he knows, anyway; one survives the attack and goes into hiding).

Cryotek begs the Autobots for help, and they’re initially willing to do so, but Rodimus Prime refuses, revealing he actually supports Megatron’s ambitions. In horror, Rodimus is basically immediately impeached, and he defects to the Decepticons. In his place, the Autobots decide to elect... Orion Pax, turning him into Optimus Prime. He’s converted from a Powermaster to a Headmaster (since Powermasters can only ever be sidekicks, really) and put in command. It’s also worth noting that Orion Pax was primarily elected and put in the position of Rodimus’s partner because his mother, Alphus Trion was the Prime before Rodimus (so, she used to be Alpha Trion, then Alphus Prime, then finally Alphus Trion).

Then, the fight ends up being taken to Earth.

The initial Decepticon team is made up of Megatron, Rodimus, and Shockwave, of course, but also Cryotek’s former second in command, Starscream, who’s secretly still on Cryotek’s side, as well as Cyclonus, Hook, and a few others. The main group tends to be Megatron, Rodimus, Starscream, Cyclonus, and once he arrives, Tidal Wave.

The initial Autobot team is made up of Optimus Prime, Cryotek, Jazz (who’s actually the human sidekick, they discover she’s actually a Pretender early on (it’s just that the Solus plot twist is later; and Jazz is her nickname, her real name is Rika Amami), and also a Headmaster, so they give her a Transtector they have lying around), Ratchet, Bumblebee, and a few others.

Over time, more Autobots and Decepticons come to Earth. Also, two more factions come into play- for one, the Terrorcons, and also, the Vehicons.

See, the Vehicons are Human-made Transformers. They’re generally non-sentient and just military weapons. The most important Vehicon ends up being one that transforms into a B-17, Omega Supreme.

The humans also experiment on the Terrorcon virus and make a variant on it- the Transmetal virus. The Transmetal virus won’t turn you into a servant of Unicron, but it will turn Transformers into partially-organic monsters against their will. It gets used on two Transformers in particular- the Decepticon Terrorsaur... and Jazz. After getting infected with it, Jazz renames herself Elita-One.

And also, the “leader” of the Terrorcons eventually appears, as a dark mirror of Optimus- Scourge. Of course, he’s a Terrorcon, so he’s not really the leader, but he makes a good figurehead.

Eventually, Optimus gets into a fight with both Scourge and Omega Supreme, and ends up partially opening the Matrix of Leadership. This converts both of them into Autobots, by curing Scourge of his Terrorcon infection and granting sentience to Omega. Scourge, now cured, becomes Ultra Magnus. However, pretty much immediately, Optimus ends up getting infected, becoming Nemesis Prime, the new figurehead leader of the Terrorcons.

Elita-One ends up getting elected to Prime, becoming Elitus-Prime. This lasts briefly, but then Elitus ends up fully opening the Matrix herself. This causes a whole ton of changes.

At this point, the conflict turns into a predominantly anti-Unicron one, as the Autobots and Decepticons start a ceasefire to fight Unicron’s forces.

Some changes:

Optimus is cured of his infection, becoming Prime again and forcing the Fallen to get off his ass and become the new Terrorcon figurehead

A shit ton of Transformers are reformatted into more powerful forms, such as Elitus-One becoming Prowl (who’s still technically infected with the Transmetal Virus, but now she’s kinda built around it, so it’s less of a curse and more of a blessing), Bumblebee becoming Goldbug (who is built out of five smaller hiveminded robots), Hook becoming Scrapper and getting five sidekicks with whom he can combine into Devastator; etc. Another really important one, though? Megatron becomes Galvatron.

In the end, Galvatron and a few others would sacrifice themselves to defeat Unicron.

Eventually, there’d be a sequel story. In it, Unicron would turn out to still be alive, and he’d use his power to resurrect the shells of the Transformers who sacrificed themselves, but not their personalities- they’d just be shells. Galvatron’s shell would just call itself Megatron; eventually, Galvatron’s personality would be rescued and he’d join the Autobots and still call himself Galvatron. Anyways, Megatron would take command of the Decepticons again, for reasons. And the story would start with a group of Autobots dying, but getting resurrected in more powerful forms by Primus. Optimus Prime wouldn’t change his name, but the rest would; most notably, Goldbug would become Hot Shot, and Prowl would become Red Alert. Also, Optimus would save the life of a Decepticon named Brawl, and so Brawl’d also die and get resurrected (and not change his name), and he’d join the Autobots and be a huge Optimus fanboy.

And speaking of Megatron, he’d be a six-changer. His five altmodes? Truck, jet, dragon, tank, and... I don’t actually remember the fifth one. He’d use the Truck one as his primary altmode and use the others for specific situations.

Also eventually, Red Alert would get seriously damaged and go through a process that would repair her, but also minorly overhaul her. Not as extensive an overhaul as her previous ones, she’d still fundamentally have the same body, but it’d be... different. As Red Alert (and Prowl, for that matter), she transformed into an emergency vehicle, but now, she transformed into... basically the same car as she did as Red Alert, but tooled to be a racecar instead, and in different colors. So she renamed herself Override.

So, she has now gone by nine names: Solus, Rika Amami, Jazz, Elita-One, Elitus Prime, Elitus-One, Prowl, Red Alert, and Override. SO MANY NAMES.

Rhapsode Reacts: RWBY Volume 3

Hey guys, Rhapsode here. So I’ve been on the record numerous times saying I haven’t watched the internet series RWBY. I haven’t. However, I have a rather close mutual @remnantoforario who tells me about most of the series and characters. Seriously, I basically have experienced the plot through osmosis. Now me and remnant work on a lot of fanfiction stuff and general discussions of video games and manga. And highly suggest anyone who wants a more in depth look at RWBY to please check him out. He’s great.

Now due to the fact he has basically told me the series up this point, its kinda been a bit frustrating when I forget something and ask him to reiterate. So I decided to knuckle down and watch some of the series.

I helped remnant get a non RWBY fan opinion, by basically live-blogging him in our PMs. And I thought I had some level of humorous reactions and Remnant had some witty observations to my reactions.

Anyway, if you didn’t catch it the first time, I must repeat, I’m not coming at this from the perspective of a fan. I have very little emotional or personal enjoyment going in the series up to this point. If I say something that offends you as a fan, I’m sorry in advance.

With that out of the way, let’s dive in:

Why would you start Team RWBY’s preliminary fight in the middle of it?

the Vytal Festival feels like it should be reversed: you should start with 1, then go to 2, then for your finals, 4. Or just do a solid 4 v 4 all tournament

Remnantoforario: I dont know what the purpose of the tournament is, or why anyone would want to participate. There is no prize

Me: Bragging rights I guess. But the whole point of the festival is to celebrate peace. Lets celebrate piece with a bunch of kids beating each other up .

Ruby has a line of "we did it?" like she was surprised. Was that a concern?

Like I understand the festival has been built up since the second volume, but there's a reason most good tournament arcs ease you into the first round. Its to reaffirm character motivation and actually show you what a fight would look like

I do appreciate some of the “show don't tell” moments like the one girl using a heat crystal in her skate board to free her teammate

But usually even if the first round is jobbers, they're at least presented as a threat. I never really got that. The tide seemed more and Rwby's favor, but I can't tell if that was always the case because we started in the middle of the fight

the pacing just feels like you can't handle the story, so it wants to get to the fight scenes to keep your attention

Emerald is actually really funny, holy shit

“How can they be so happy?” And “It’s the heiress and the bimbo”

Still Weiss and Yang, better savor this duo while I can

Neo’s gothic Lolita is cute. Though I feel like their match should’ve gotten a focus

Like I mean not an episode but if they started with the instant eliminations of 1v1, I could easily see this cool intro of Rwby has met Emerald, Mercury, and Cinder, but then is shocked at who this fourth member even is

OK I feel like the scene with Rwby and JNPR should’ve happened before the first round. Given Nora’s rant would actually tie to Ruby’s whole “we won?” Surprise

“Cinder: Even if you know how the story ends that doesn’t make it any less fun to watch.” I’d agree with you if you know the story wasn’t Rwby. And it’s not really that fun to watch a bunch of fighting with no weight.

OK team JNPR vs team BRNZ is actually a much better introduction to the tournament than Rwby vs Abrn

We actually see how the field is chosen and we actually get some genuine strategy and coordination. And before all this we actually get some motivation about how the characters feel going into this battle

I got admit I’m not very much of a fan of melee weapons that also turn into guns and just kind of makes the purpose of melee fighters and ranged fighters pointless

Logically it makes sense that if you’re making a weapon you do want it to have multiple functionality but at the same time it kind of makes a lot of that fighting less fun

I mean what do you want to see more a team complete each other or just one person who can just do everything with the right weapon?

Ehh OK the team meeting joke is running a tad too long

Okay, that was what I was mentioning before... Just cut out Nora with missiles. I feels more like a give and take as well as more unique to have that moment with her slamming on the ground

OK that joke with Weiss and telling Indigo to beat up Neptune was timed and delivered really bad

Also port makes a point that Sun is from Vacuo. Wouldn’t it be interesting if the leader or any membr of Indigo actually did know Sun from Vacuo?

I say that because no member of team Indigo has said anything, and it would at least add something unique to this fight

OK I have to bring up the weird use of western cartoon comedy

Neptune running up the mountain it’s super speed is kind of funny but this is also a fight I’m supposed to take seriously

Nora and Ruby kind of get away with it given their powers but Neptune just ran up a mountain like it was nothing

okay introduction to Winter is pretty good. Shame we don't really get that "Novice victory" vibe from their fight. Maybe if it last for more than 8 minutes and didn't start from the middle...

okay see, I don't mid Winter and Qrow having a fight in the middle of the square as it helps serve as an introduction to the characters and flexes their strength

though Im also starting to notice something else that bugs me in the fights, no banter or introspection or comments

its just fight moves

like there's times that's god, DBZ did it tons of times when its just Goku making "Hiyah" noises but there was still a bit of time to get in a line that both broke up the action and highlighted how two characters felt or through thought was able to give us a peek into their head

watching rwby fights makes me think, "This be better as a video game"

Ironwood is kinda becoming my favorite character

He's a flawed human being, and the narrative shows that, but it also shows he has a point

Okay Mercury and Emerald vs Coco and Yatsuhashi is actually really good

not much character, but its actually more intimidating seeing how strong these two are. Wish the music had a bit more ambiance

Okay, that's an interesting plot point. Qrow explaining how beating one high profile criminal hasn't stopped crime. And the fact there is zero crime is concerning and relating it back to Ironwood

Wow, its almost when you just slow down and lt characters breath and talk to each other and have them be characters without shoving in a fight scene, its pretty good

Why is team Cardin fighting a non faunus team? Feels like a waste of characters

disappointing that Ciel doesn't know Penny is a robot

mainly because the way its queued up with Ciel seemed like she was only spending time with Penny because ordered and her attention to the schedule makes it seem like she is a soldier just having to play dress up for the robot to make it comfortable

Me: Wow Weiss's heels... Never noticed them. I just thought they were boots

Remnant: Nope heels

Also Neon and Flynt actually have a pretty good intro

We know what Atlas is like seeing Winter and Ironwood, so Neon and Flynt make an interesting and immediate contrast

And it feels like there is something riding on our opponents side given Flynts history with the Schnee. Which makes him stand out from the other jobbers

And Neon's intentionally irritating personality actually is more character displayed by any other opponent character

I actually really like the OST in the fight too. This might be my favorite action scene

Flynt actually has a really cool semblance too

oh wow, some actual dread with Weiss getting eliminated

Imma let you get away with that Hulk reference Port

I like how Yang beat Flynt, but if I was gonna beat Neon, I'd have Yang punch the ground and through her off balance

Okay, Blake and Weiss have a pretty good scene when all hell was breaking loose

Ruby versus the big ass bird was actually pretty cool and the scene of everyone’s lockers being what puts it down is really clever

Oh really cool scene of Port and Oobleck. Hey the fall is turning out pretty decent

Ironwood killing the wolf was pretty good

Roman is a breath of fresh air as a villain. And it’s namely his acting

You know I feel like you could let the more tertiary characters fight the robots while Weiss and Blake fight WF

OK I repeat this is just become a video game. Giant dragon that spawns mini monsters in a destroyed town

The spectacle fighting actually really works when your opponents are mindless and faceless brutes

You have Adam in a school full of terrified people, why aren’t you showing his nuance by showing he won’t hurt Faunus staff and is giving them an out?

Velvet’s scene be cool if it was powers she was mimicking. Looking at a lot of weapons really doesn’t do much for me.

That said, this could work if she ended up copying the mech and fighting against it

Okay I feel like Weiss finally being able to summon something should’ve been done with a lot more gravitas

And Sun proceeds to be the best male character

Neo is fucking beast. Y’know what, let her be final boss

a lot of faces seem stiff in transition expressions. Or they have this doll like quality

The most expressive person seems to be Emerald

Pyrrha and Jaune’s kiss is actually really tender

Me: Okay how the hell is Cinder’s dress still managing to cover her loins?

Yang’s bitterness works here. Though given how I wasn’t feeling too much of the sisterly bond between the two, it’s probably not as hard hitting as they wanted

Salem’s introduction isn’t bad

so after watching V3. my final opinion is meh

Strikes me as they wanted to the fall, and the tournament was just a lot of window dressing. Because the stuff with the Fall is the best part, but everything else has felt dull and fillery.

Maybe I’ll do this for the next season of a series I binge. But till next time, take care.

aaaaaa the mural of mayhem looks so good (source)

tl;dr: bunches of new environment shots. also i wanna time travel So Bad, just so Bad,,, gearbox, please, time travel??? i wanna meet The Man Typhon Deleon just *clenches fist* so bad and slap him for leading to the opening of the first vault. also for some reason tina is the only one of the good guys with the fabric stuff the twins are wearing. be warned. oh, also, there might be some ursa mechs? i saw like 3 robos that look like iron bear but aren’t colored like it so who even knows. oh and we see the scientist (?) dude in color next to Tannis from the MoM. he seems cool evil.

i don’t even know where to begin here so let’s start with the middle and work our way towards literally whatever catches my eye next. i have no method, im a disaster

nothing too special about our VHs here, they seem to be using the gold gun skins that are offering in either the early adopter pack or the other pack u get i think for signing up to be a VIP. so that’s neat. also shows off the good guys = blue/yellow theme we see throughout the mural.

there is this weird square shape in the sky/clouds above them? idk what it’s supposed to be, though. a logo? a ship? a building? i can’t tell!

i could be wrong/seeing things though lol

zoomer isn��t colored in! probably didn’t want to detract from the main 4 VHs. additionally, Amara’s arms don’t have their patterns across them.

Moze is also the only VH here with a hint as to what her Action Skill is. IB is elsewhere on the mural, though. We’ll get to him.

the Vault behind them!

I’ve spoken about it before, so i won’t go into it here

bandits? i think! looks like at least one of them is wearing power armor... or just a suit of armor in general. it looks like power armor to me tho lol

another set of silhouettes in the foreground on the right there. can’t tell who/what they’re supposed to be unfortunately, but im going to assume more bandits

interestingly, we see the ruins of helios SUPER close and, even more interestingly, what appears to be a Vault in front of it! Which could very well be the Vault of the Traveler? since the Traveler itself can’t teleport it anymore (cause y’know... it ded.) It has a weird shape at the bottom, idk what that is supposed to be. it looks like a curvy outline of an arrow tbh lol. i wonder if the Vault actually did teleport Rhys and Fiona somewhere. I also wonder if the thing on the bottom is meant to help ‘visitors’ or something idk use/see/extract whatever was in the Vault. there was like some stairs and then a chest..? thing? idek.

but yeah, looks like the Vault by Helios is doing well. Also, Vaughn apparently knows Rhys is on Promethea (soon) after the end of tales so I wonder if that actually is a portal... either way, i hope this means we’ll get to go visit 👀 We’ve visited the ruins of helios already in commander lilith, so hopefully this isn’t too much of a stretch.

to the right of that we see Lorelei knockin the shit out of a goliath that seems... kinda small compared to her? idk maybe it’s cause he’s lying down (and out).

We also see another instance of Mystery Girl up at the top there, though she’s in the exact same pose as the mask of mayhem which makes me kinda sad. i was hoping to see another angle of her or something. I do hope she’s actually in the game and isn’t just a statue. be wild if tyreen gave her the suck or something to turn her into a statue to preserve her in the hopes that doing the reverse succ/getting the ultimate power would let ty bring her back to life at a later point lmao

below lorelei we can see a crimson raider in the ash cloud! i have no idea why he’s there but he’s lookin baller.

next to to lorelei is a titan (unsure if that’s the official name for these big guys or if the one in the showcase was unique) a skag and clappy! I can’t tell if clappy is holding something in his left arm or not

also the background looks like a city. i think that is promethea? i can’t really tell tbh

next to clappy we see part of a ferris wheel which im pretty sure is part of the circus area we’ve seen in the trailers. the one with the circle emblem thing above the door/entrance.

below clappy/marcus we see what i think is part of Eden-6

the bridge/road has me going like 🤔 but the foliage pretty much confirms it. might be related to that research base looking area. might be related to jakobs manor (maybe they have a bridge to keep bandits out) idk

above that we see marcus looking some cash to a bunch of psychos. I think he has an ECHO skin? i can’t really tell. not really much to say here tbh, is marcs.

behind him we see this landscape which i don’t think we’ve seen before. the tree is screaming Athenas at me but tbh i think we’ve only seen red trees there, haven’t we? also is that the handle of a sword near the bottom there? wtf is that?

maybe a new planet? or a new biome on one of the planets we haven’t seen yet. it looks like a savanna tree to me. you know the ones?

yeah. possible new planet/new biome we haven’t seen yet?? i would ADORE a savanna type area.

next to that we see a tink and a skag in front of the HBC. I thiiink the tink is holding a flamethrower? not sure, though. maybe a miniboss like midgemong? that’d be neat asf

i can’t tell if this is a suit of power armor/a robot or just part of the environment lol, i can see the helmet up top and a big bulky body. i would love to fight power armored enemies like that, be so cool! maybe these are modified suits of the ursa corps project? or something. idk about the helmet.

above the tink/skag combo we can see more silhouettes in the foreground. i seriously can’t make out who they’re supposed to be :( maybe some maliwan troops? i feel like they’d be more recognizable, though. hmhmhmhm

in the background we see another robo/power armor suit (???? i think????), this one seems to have a flamethrower, which is kinda reinforcing my theory they might be repurposed armor sets. this one doesn’t appear to have a helmet. kinda get the feeling they’re either repurposed or completely different cuz the helmet on the other one is throwing me off a touch. IB doesn’t have a helmet.

first thing i noticed? her jacket seems to be warping into that weird fabric we see clinging to other baddies throughout the mural and covering her right leg.

She seems to be holding up a grenade/molotov cocktail/smoke bomb?

pretty sure it’s a molotov cocktail though

i love how the smoke merges into the roses above her. really cool detail. you can also see the recruitment center to the right there! and a crane which makes me double down on the idea that the ‘vault’ we see in the booth thing had been excavated by dahl (considering the main building of the RC is a dahl building)

we also see a fire rakk? ?? i think? be cool if we got badass elemental rakks. i’ve only ever seen normal badass rakks. i wonder if this is a play on the fact there’s a psycho in the MoM with rakk wings and the twins stole lily’s firehawk powers... probably not, right? probably not...

ty’s tattoos are lookin kinda green for me here, might be the close proximity to all those browns and reds, though. it’d be really cool if she could pull an amara and swap her succ elements LMAO

a bunch of psychos! all with wings! which is weird cause the sirens don’t have wings here. weird chunk of symbolism i guess. we can see a tubby on the top there which makes me happy to know they’re coming back. there’s one with

and there’s this figure on the very left

who doesn’t appear to be a psycho at all

also, note that all these psychos have a ‘normal’ brown/gray buzzaxe

the one at the bottom here, on ty’s left has a more golden-colored buzzaxe. im p sure that corresponds to rank in cult. i also feel obligated to point out that, while im 90% sure that flame is coming from the flamethrower on the right there, it does kinda look like the bottom psycho is shooting a blast of flames out of his palm.

moving right along

the whole entourage seems to be laying across a statue of roses, which match the ones at the top of the mural AND the ones on the cover art.

we see a shot of Pandora and Elpis here (I’m pretty sure. the purple light at the top right makes me believe that’s the eridian scar, but.... may not be)

we see one of those lil video game dudes from the demo, forgot their names but they’re Maliwan

below them we see this scene

which is an area i don’t recognize. eden-6 maybe? the buildings seem a bit close together, though.

tbh i thought this was another city at first, maybe it’s Promethea from ye olde days? you know, before Atlas took over and modernized it. Maybe we’ll get to go back in time to stop the first Vault from ever being opened. that’d be pretty cool. man time travel would be wild. i wonder if we’d be able to combine the Vault of the Traveler and the Vault of the Sentinel to do that. now that’d be cool.

but it’s probably eden-6 lmao

her hair seems spikier in the mask bit... maybe that’s not her? she also doesn’t have the earrings. idk who else it could be, though. 🤔

Also a bunch of psychos all fighting each other. over the buzzaxes maybe? if they really are a symbol of rank in the cult. that or they’re just being psychos.

this area with a waterfall and also a drainage pipe. i think this is also eden-6, but i am not 100% sure. probably an area we haven’t seen yet.

lily!! her right (our left) wing looks really weird to me, idk what it is. it’s a lot redder/yellower than her left one. Also, the tattoos near her wrist look like they’re coming off her arm.

to the left of lily we see ellie!

holding a whole-ass street sign. insane.

next/behind her is promethea! which we’ve seen before. it looks like one of the buildings in the middle there is getting blasted by something, but idk what. maybe something Maliwan?

also, on the left there we can see what i thought was iron bear

but now i am second guessing myself due to the other robos/armor suits we saw on the right of the mural.

maybe they did not color in IB fully like Zoomer? it looks like there is someone/something where the turret mount would be. maybe that is moze standing up there? it would be really interesting to see other Ursa Corps soldiers coming in. I know they mentioned in the Commander Lily ECHO log that Vladof was at war with Tediore, and we know through their advertisements for bl2 that Vladof is also at war with Dahl. It’s possible we’ll see some of their troops in the game! especially since Moze’s echo actually talks about the troop as a whole and not specifically her, unlike the others.

next to the mystery mech or iron bear (you decide) we see Mystery Girl/Little Blue/Nope Girl

and, yeah, starting to think she may not actually fit into the timeline of Steele’s death. she looks older than 12 to me (for reference, in bl2 tina was 13). but we haven’t quite seen enough of her so who knows. im getting ‘way too tall’ vibes. maybe 14-15? maybe mystery MoM girl is her little sister. i would not be surprised if we saw another sibling relationship to juxtapose the twins (considering mystery girl looks like a CoV bandit, they’d be distant at the start and close at the end of the game while the twins are close at the start and distant at the end of the game- we know Danny Homan said their relationship would start to warp).

below her we see this area

i think that’s a water tank at the bottom there? this looks kinda like a garden/courtyard area to me. Maybe another place on Athenas? i want to say Athenas bc Little Blue is directly above it. may be another new planet/biome/region we haven’t seen yet.

Above L.B we see this car

which is interesting to me bc it appears to have a closed top? I could be wrong though. would be fun to see Vasquez’s car make a return, tho lol (and then everyone gets mad the fuckin car is making an appearance but Gaige isn’t)

above that we see Tina and Mordy (and Talon) making an appearance. Tina appears to be in the same pose as her Mappearancence, including the huge launcher behind her which has me like :O Talon is a girl now in bl3, right? unless their gender changed again after the commander lilith stuff.

Also, I’m hesitant to note that Tina is the only ‘good guy’ character to have the fabric on. Everyone other character with it is either a psycho or one of the twins. I hope that’s just artistic choice and nothing more because :(

to their right we see 3 very interesting things so we’ll go in order from the bottom counter clockwise

another mystery dude who seems to match the one we saw by tyreen, and those silhouettes again. It looks like they’re reaching down to save their falling teammates. i hope they’re alright. (unless they’re evil. then, oof, crash and burn)

at the top i can see a bunch of men with guns pointed at what i think is a jabber? but the lower bit i can’t make out. someone’s falling at the very bottom, it looks like a second falling figure has been caught with rope? idk.

above that scene we see

tannis! and the mystery guy to the bottom right. the one we’ve seen standing next to her in the MoM. does he have red eyes for anyone else or is that just me? might just be the lighting. Do I think he’s evil? you know the fuck i do. I trust nobody lol. Since I’m a fan of the “the twins are the product of a weird experiment” theory, it’s possible he is the experimenter. Tannis could’ve been feeding him information. maybe she didn’t even know what was going on- though, knowing her disregard for ethics, maybe she did.

she has a new megaphone, i wonder if that is hinting we’ll be getting more circles of slaughters/underdomes. It would be nice to have her commentary return, i actually really enjoyed that in the bl1 dlc and I did actually enjoy her dlc. The wave combat was fun. I’d love to have an endless wave version to see how long i could survive.

it also looks like there are a bunch of psychos (?) hanging out around the bar. and this character at the bottom right who i don’t recognize

to the far right of moxxi we see Maya

i think this is a new pose, but tbh i don’t see anything noteworthy here. I do think it’s interesting she’s using pistols instead of smgs, but oh well. might just be for the poses lol

Troy’s statue. one interesting bit i gotta mention is that it looks like the cut on the right side of his face (our left) is visible here! iirc it was not visible on his portraits in the MoM. so that’s new!

none of the psychos on this side seem to have golden buzzaxes, plus their drapes? wtf are these? they don’t look like robes to me. anyway, they’re darker in color than the ones on Ty’s side. might be artistic direction, might be showing they’re not as high rank as the ones with the god queen (vs the right hand man lol)

i also only see 2 psychos with wings here, the one on the very left and you can see part of a wing on the bottom right. They also don’t appear to be resting/climbing on a statue like Tyreen’s are. There is ALSO a lot less of them.

some interesting stuff about Troy: his stomach tattoos don’t seem to be around, but that could be because of the detail level required- would probably look like a big ol smudge. it is cool seeing Troy with a gun, is this the first time? i can’t remember, but i know we always saw him with his sword. i find it kinda funny they decided on the gun considering this is supposed to be renaissance, the sword would (kinda) be more fitting in that regard. it is also a giant glowy tech sword, so maybe not.

Also, Ty’s side of the mural is the only one with the roses. idk if that’s to signify something or just to balance out colors, though you’d think the red clouds on troy’s side couldve been easily converted to roses as well. hmmm 🤔

“See what I mean?” Jaune said, gesturing towards the walls around them. “Sure, we’re at Beacon, but we aren’t on familiar ground as far as I can tell.”

The hallways were almost the same as they usually were, except with the rows of lockers missing and some doors being boarded up.

One of them made Ruby stop in her tracks.

“I don’t think that one was there before.”

“What?” Jaune stopped walking. She gestured towards it. “This door. It definitely wasn’t here before.”

The door in question had been boarded up, like some of the doors that they had passed previously. There was a name plate on the top of the doorframe – where it would say what this room was for – but it didn’t say anything.

“Hm...” Jaune said thoughtfully. “This IS interesting...Let’s see if we find anything else.”

As the two of them continued walking, Jaune noticed another door that wasn’t usually in the building. It wasn’t boarded up, and the nameplate read “STORAGE”.

“Wanna check it out?” Ruby asked.

“We’re going to be late enough to whoever wrote that letter’s invitation as it is. We’ll check it out later.” He turned away from the door. “Let’s keep walking.”

Ruby nodded and followed him as he continued.

“From what I remember, the amphitheatre is...” He pointed. “This way. And that’s assuming they mean the one Ozpin talked to us in on our first day.”

“Most likely-” Ruby stopped again.

“What’s wrong?”

“Look.” Ruby pointed up at an area of the wall.

Another of the screens that she had noticed in the lecture hall was mounted where she was pointing.

“What the heck is that thing?” Ruby asked. “I saw one in the classroom, and I have no idea what it’s for.”

Jaune shook his head. “No idea.”

“Same here...But it gives me a bad feeling-”

Before Ruby could finish, the screen suddenly filled with static.

“Ah-!?” She jumped backwards, while Jaune’s gaze narrowed on the screen.

The static flurried around the screen for a few seconds before a voice came out of the speakers.

“Uh, testing...Testing...One...Two...Three- Aha! Got it!”

The voice sounded unnaturally happy, but had a digital edge that sounded very inhuman. The voice alone made Ruby shiver a little.

“Righty then!” The voice continued. “This is a reminder for everyone who hasn’t arrived at the amphitheatre yet to hurry the hell up! I mean, seriously! I stated the time in every single letter!” The voice sighed, but it sounded robotic and growl-like. “Whatever, point is, anyone who isn’t at the amphitheatre yet, move your asses!”

The voice cut off, and the screen cut to black.

Ruby’s eyes were wide with shock, still focused on the screen.

Jaune put his hands on his hips and sighed. “I guess that’s our cue to hurry up.”

Ruby was still in shock, and hadn’t moved. “Who...the heck WAS that!?”

“Once again, no idea.” Jaune replied. “But at least we know who wrote that letter.”

“Yeah, but...”

“But what?”

“Didn’t they say that they ‘stated the time in every single letter’?”

“What about it?”

“That means...There’s more people here!” Jaune stopped. “Really?”

“Yeah! If there was more than one letter, that suggests that there could be more people here!”

He thought for a moment. “Most likely...Either way, the best thing to do is to hurry up.” He turned around. “Coming?”

“Yeah. Let’s go.”

The two of them continued down the hallway, passing more doors – some being boarded up – until they got to one labelled “amphitheatre”.

“We’re here.” Ruby said.

“Care to do the honours?” Jaune asked, gesturing towards the door.

Ruby nodded and pushed the door open.

What she saw inside made her instantly step back in shock.

Everyone was there.

A number of the other students from Beacon, as well as some from the three other kingdoms had arrived in Vale for the upcoming Vytal Festival, and the majority of the students Ruby knew were standing there in the amphitheatre in front of her. Some stood in their teams, some stood closer to their closest friends; but everyone was there.

And they were all staring at them.

Everything was silent for a few seconds.

“Uh...” Ruby started. “Hey, guys!”

“Ah! Finally! More people!” An orange haired girl said, darting towards the two of them. She was wearing a sleeveless white top with a heart shape cut in the middle of the chest, with matching pink gloves and a short pink skirt.

She immediately starting shaking Jaune’s hand. “Jaune! You’re finally here! What took you so long?” She turned to face Ruby with a smile. “And Ruby too! It’s always good to see you.”

Jaune blinked. “...Nora? What are you doing here?”

“Could ask you the same thing, buddy!” Nora shrugged. “But we’re all here, so I didn’t bother.”

A boy wearing a dark green tailcoat with black and gold trim, white trousers, black shoes and with a long black ponytail with a magenta streak, as well as a faded pink lotus flower clutched in his left hand narrowed his eyes at her sternly. “Nora, please.”

“Okay Ren, no need to be a killjoy!”

“I’m not being a killjoy. You just need to calm down.”

“Well, it’s kinda hard to be calm when you get a mysterious letter inviting you to the amphitheatre after apparently falling asleep in a locker!”

“Wait a second!” Ruby interrupted. “You woke up in a locker too?”

Nora blinked. “Yeah. I thought I had blacked out after too much sugar or something, but turns out Ren woke up in one too.”

Ren nodded. “And before you asked, I’ve already asked them.”

“You mean they all-?” Ruby started.

“Woke up inside a locker and received an invitation summoning them here. Yes.”

“Hm...” Jaune said thoughtfully. “That IS weird...”

“Weird doesn’t even begin to describe it!” Nora replied, articulating her point by waving her arms around a little. “The fact that all 17 of us woke up in a locker can’t be coincidence, right?...Well, it was 17 last time I counted...”

“19.” A voice corrected.

“Huh?”

The voice had come from another boy near the corner of the room. He had spiky silver hair and wore a grey and black zip jacket, as well as black jeans and a large pair of black boots. He was standing next to a dark skinned girl with light green hair and deep red eyes.

“Sure, you counted 17,” he continued. “But with Jaune and Ruby, that makes 19 of us.”

Nora pouted. “Okay, no need to be a smartass.”

He tutted and rolled his eyes, prompting the other girl to shake her head.

“Wait, there’s 19, of us?” Ruby asked.

“What did I just say, little red?” The boy said cynically. “Doesn’t take a dust scientist to figure it out.”

“Okay Mercury, cut it out.” Jaune said.

Mercury smirked. “Oh look, blondie finally grew himself a pair!”

Jaune didn’t respond. He just glared at him.

The girl Mercury was with spoke for him. “Maybe Jaune’s right, we can save the conflicts for later.”

Another girl in the room adjusted the sunglasses she was wearing. “And do what?”

“Try to figure out what’s going on, duh.”

“Emerald has a point,” A boy next to the girl with the sunglasses said, who had dark scar-torn skin and blank eyes. “19 students all wake up inside a locker and find a letter telling us to go here. I know the professor throws his own students off of cliffs, but this is way too outrageous a stunt for even him to pull.”

“Wait, he threw you guys off a cliff?” A monkey faunus with messy blonde hair and an unbuttoned shirt said in slight disbelief.

“It’s a long story.”

While the two of them were talking, Ruby made a point to see who she recognised.

She had of course seen half of team JNPR as well as Emerald and Mercury, and had also noticed Pyrrha, team CFVY, team SSSN and even Penny, who was a robot they met from Atlas.

Before she could finish looking, someone tackle-hugged her from behind.

“RUUUUBYYYYYYY!!!!” The voice behind her said. “Oh thank goodness you’re here! I was so worried!”

Ruby recognised the voice instantly. “Yang-!?”

“Okay okay,” A second, calmer voice said, pulling Yang from on top of her. “You can give her some room to breathe now.”

“Seriously!” Another voice added. “Learn some respect for her boundaries.”

Ruby stopped and turned around, to find the rest of her team behind her. Blake being the one who pulled Yang off of her, and Weiss being the one telling her off for not respecting Ruby’s personal space.

“G-guys?” Ruby stuttered. “You’re here too?”

“Uh, hello?” Yang said, putting a hand on her hip. “We’re right in front of you!”

Ruby paused for a minute. “S-sorry...I’m still very confused as to what is going on.”

“Literally all of us are in the same boat here.” Blake replied.

“Make that a sinking ship.” Jaune said from behind them.

“Fine, all of us are in the same sinking ship.”

“Wait, Jaune, why do you think it’s sinking?” Ruby asked.

“This isn’t exactly a good situation, is it?” Jaune replied. “For starters, even though we’re at Beacon, we aren’t on familiar ground. And literally all of us woke up trapped in a locker. You try looking at the glass half full.”

“For the first time,” A boy with red hair and a smooth British accent added. “I actually agree with you.”

“Thanks, Scarlet. Anyway, we’re all in the same sinking ship. And none of us know who the captain is.”

“Well...” Ruby started, before another girl finished her sentence for her.

She had red hair tied up in a ponytail, green eyes, gold armour and a red sash on her waist.

“At least we’re here with people we know.” Pyrrha said with a smile.

“That’s right!” Another girl, Penny, added from nearby. “We’re all here with our friends!”

“Y-yeah!” Ruby said, looking towards everyone in the room, all people she recognised. “Even if we aren’t on familiar ground, we know that we can trust each other! And we can get through this together!”

The room mostly nodded in silent agreement.

“Well, can’t argue with your logic there, Ruby.” Jaune shrugged. “You always know how to keep our spirits up.”

“Yeah!” Nora added from nearby. “You’re like our personal cheerleader!”

“Y’know, I can’t disagree with that.” Sun also added.

Mercury looked over to Emerald, who shrugged.

“I guess.” He said.

“Well done, sis! You got the whole room going!” Yang said excitedly, tussling Ruby’s hair with a smile.

“Ah-! Yang, don’t mess it up!” Ruby started, fixing her hair as soon as Yang let go.

“Okay, okay.” Yang said, laughing a little.

Ruby stepped forward, so she had the whole room’s attention again. “Anyway, like I said, even if we’re in unfamiliar territory, we know we can work together! We’re all friends, we trust each other!” She started to smile a little. “We still have hope!”

“Hope, you say?” A voice said.

Ruby stopped in her tracks. “Huh-!?”

“That’s disappointing...You’re already having hope so early on.” The voice continued.

“Oh great...” Scarlet muttered, folding his arms angrily. “It’s that stupid voice from the screen again.”

“Hey, my voice is not stupid!”

“Wait...” Ruby started, turning around for a second to notice another one of the screens suspended on one of the walls, before turning around to the source of the voice. That IS the voice from that screen!

“Will we be able to find out who you are this time?” Coco asked, adjusting her glasses again.

“Don’t be impatient, I’m getting to it!”

“Just...” Ruby started. “Just who ARE you!?”

Almost as if on cue, as they were all focused on the small desk on the stage of the amphitheatre, something jumped up from behind it and landed on the surface of the desk.

It looked like a tiny anthropomorphic Beowolf, with one orange eye and one gold eye. A flame like tattoo surrounded the gold eye, and it had a big smile on it’s face.

The thing bowed. “Pleasure to meet you all. My name is Beochi, and welcome back to Beacon Academy!”

So I actually liked vld season 7

Some of it anyway. I still have some beef with it. Normally I don’t really post my thoughts but I wanna get it out of my chest c: gonna stick just to the Good Things on this post since it got out of hand!

Warning: LONG POST and since I’m on mobile idk how to put it under a read more!

*** [Good Things]

So many good things honestly.

• FIRST OF ALL: THE MUSIC! THE ANIMATION! THE BACKGROUNDS! THE CHOREOGRAPHY!! More than any plot these workers deserve so much credit <333

• Everything about episode 1. From learning of the beginning of Keith’s and Shiro’s friendship to the shenanigans with the yelmore. As a med student though, I wish they would explain a bit more about this mysterious disease he had and why is it apparently “gone” now.

• Cosmo. Everything about this space pupper. I love that he’s being included far more than the other pets because it was always pretty clear to me he’s very protective of keith and doesn’t appear to like leaving his owner’s side. ALSO I LOVE HOW BIG HE IS. HE’S BIGGER THAN PIDGE IN SOME SHOTS.

• I’m digging the Generals’ new outfits. Noice.

• LANCE DEFENDING PIDGE. Yes yes yes. I love how much he cares for her. I really wish she had become his love interest instead of Allura. Still! They had quite a few sweet moments c:

• Space mice are back to helping the team too heck yes

• “The Feud” is both kinda endearing but also my least favorite episode of the series. Since this part is about the good things: Everything about Lotor. Zarkon calling Lotor names. It was so DOTU I loved it so much

• THE DRUID IS BACK!! I loved that the druid was back. I really really wish they had expanded on WHY the druids are like that and HOW do they get their powers. They appear Galra. Are they a breed Haggar experimented on? They seem to almost idolize her. Gimme more info on the quiznaking Druids season 8 plEASE

• KEITHS WEIRD QUINTESSENCE POWERS VOLTRON PLEASE -PLEASE- EXPLAIN - as a side note I 110% believe the purple quintessence coming from Keith’s hands in when he unlocks Black’s wings in season 6 is that very power of his, not Shiro’s spirit or whatever

• Keith’s and Krolia’s goodbye. It was so emotional. I love that Keith has the maturity to understand that she has to leave- not because of a “mission” but because so many Blades she was shown to CARE FOR were gone. For all the “greater good” the Blades were about, they did seem to care. I love how gentle Krolia was with Kolivan too. I wonder if Kolivan is the Shiro to Krolia’s Keith.

• I originally had mixed feelings about the Floating In Space episode because both Keith and Allura felt OOC at first. But y'know what? I’ve come to like it. Keith had been acting like the Perfect Leader™ since he came back, as if his issues had all faded away when he and Black really became a team. But truth is, they weren’t. Keith was responsible for his team now, and they were floating in space, nearly dying, and the paladins were talking about QUITTING. Keith didn’t do his job well enough. Keith failed, failed them and FAILED as a leader, or so he felt: he let them down JUST LIKE IN SEASON 4 and now they’d all die. He was tired and not thinking properly so OF COURSE his basic instinct flared up: “leave them so they wont kick me out first”. As someone who likes the idea of keith and allura together, I really didn’t get Keith’s sudden outburst against Alfor, but… He might have done it to push Allura’s buttons. He KNOWS her, he KNOWS she’s the one who would argue the most (like in s4), so he instinctively tries to get her off him already- and because he knows her so well he goes for something that he knows is a low blow. Thing is, that made Allura’s own hurt feelings flare up (and the rest of the team’s). Allura might have understood where he was coming from in s4, but she was clearly sad that he still chose the Marmora over them. Even if she GETS it, it still HURTS. The whole team HURT. And now Keith was trying to push them away AGAIN. They were PISSED. They had trusted him 100% even though he abandoned them and now he was leaving again?!

BUT THEN!! DEVELOPMENT!! This time team Voltron WILL NOT let Keith go. Will NOT kick him out no matter how hard Keith tries to make them do it (thanks Hunk!!). And that helps Keith to FINALLY admit how much he cares and allows him to put them right up there with Shiro and Krolia when it comes to people HE wont give up on, people he now KNOWS wont give up on him. He may have called them “friends” but.. Keith isn’t that good with expressing how much he cares. He’s always a little hesitant when it comes to sharing his feelings (you’re LIKE a brother to me vs you’re MY BROTHER). He does mean family. He’s just being Keith :)

• I actually genuinely liked the Earth two-parter. I never thought Sam could carry an episode like that but damn. U go babe. I loved Colleen too. AND VERONICA YEA GIRL

• Kincaid and Griffin OWN MY HEART I SWEAR-

• Bless non-evil-Galra-Prince AJ LoCascio. Even though I got whiplash in some scenes like “wait he sounds like Lotor wtq” most of the times I didn’t even notice. So glad they decided to keep him around! He has a superb voice.

• Katie reuniting with her family!! LANCE reuniting with his family!! “uncle lance” yes pls ;w;

• Hunk’s flashbacks ;-; I feel so bad for the baby I’m so glad his family is safe now. I loved seeing how cooking isn’t really just for food when it comes to Hunk, I love that his mom and aunt (i’m assuming??) actually let us viewers understand that every time hunk cooks he’s more interested in sharing company and spending time together. Just. Yes <3

• Iverson apologizing to Keith + petting Cosmo heck yea. Griffin and Keith ignoring their differences, nice.

• KEITH COMFORTING HUNK. He might not be as comfortable saying emotional words like “love” or “family” to the team as he is around Shiro and Krolia (understandably), but you can see he cares just as much. Also YES let him be hugged more. He clearly loves it.

• All those conformations of paladins!! Keith/Pidge/Allura -> Pidge and Keith. Yes!! Keith and Hunk! Lance and Hunk!! A+ hell yea

• All the shoutouts to previous seasons!! The reflective shields from S6ep1. Keith understanding sign language this time!! Pidge distracting the guards by being silly (but in a very Pidge way) while Keith goes around like in season 1!!!

• Really nice touch of having Allura give up the crystal in her tiara to save Shiro. Their friendship is so precious <3 Also bonus points since this was likely what allowed Shiro to sense Atlas’ quintessence- the new arm still DOES have a connection to his brain so, like, so does the crystal :’D

• Speaking of Atlas, I’m neutral on it? So long as it doesn’t keep showing up as a robot I’m good. I just don’t get why it gets defense upgrade when it turns into a robot? Regardless though, it seems wayyy too big and clumsy. So hopefully it’ll remain just a ship in most eps.

• I did love the smaller earth fighters tho! Blonde + Freckles Whose Name I Can’t Spell Sorry grew on me. Also, ships’ designs are awesome. Honestly so long as Earth Team doesn’t end up in the LIONS I’d be happy. I feel like they might though. Oh well.

• LANCE. JUST HOW MUCH LANCE MATURED. THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS SEASON. He barely joked around this time!! He really showed how he supports the team. I LOVE to see Keith depending on and trusting Lance to be his second in command. THAT’S what I always wanted for the two of them. - Bonus: I loved how Keith fell back for a second on his old habits by going all “don’t miss the shot” or whatever cause really that’s exactly what their rivalry was about. Early Series Lance would get back at him without batting an eye. But he remained focused and alert! Lance’s development is more subtle but this is EXACTLY the same point Keith was when Kuron started calling him worthless. Keith had GROWN, and those things didn’t bother him anymore. Likewise, Lance has GROWN. He’s an adult who takes things seriously now and doesn’t waste time with silly bickering. Just. Yes. While lowkey, this is just as satisfying to me because unlike Keith we actually SAW all the stages of Lance’s growth. (We didn’t see all the conversations Keith and Krolia had on the space whale). Just. Lance. Bless him.

• I still prefer Sendak’s season 1 design. That said, he was a marvelous villain- more than any other he really represented all that was evil in the Galra Empire so I enjoyed him. Zarkon was into the lions for personal reasons, Haggar is more about the Altean thing, Lotor didn’t really care for Voltron since he built Sincline. So yea. I didn’t expect him to be the main villain but I don’t mind.

• Speaking of which, loved the Sendak/Shiro fight! It really felt like all that encompassed the Paladins vs all that encompassed the Galra. And even though I actually didn’t like that Keith was the one to deal the final blow, Keith IS a mix of Galra/Paladin who has good intentions. So… like Lance said early in the season. He’s the future.

• not so sure what to think of the final EP and that weird robot but eh. Assuming it’s from Honerva, I DID like how it showed that Honerva IS different than Haggar… And more dangerous. This was literally a Haggar Robeast but upgraded, because YEA Honerva is much better than her quintessence-cursed counterpart.

• THE FAMILIES!! Shay!! Y'know I’m not usually a multishipper - actually I’ve never done it before - but I love both hunay and hunelle. I’m totally ok with hunelle in an AU and hunay in voltron canon (Hunk clearly cares for her so much that even though I prefer Romelle I can’t go against that precious bean teary smile when Shay showed up.). Besides!! Platonic hunelle is really precious too. ALSO ALSO KOLIVAN AND KROLIA and Krolia is wearing a Leader's version of the BoM suit?? NICE

• Matt is back and looks more handsome than ever! I love the ponytail. I love his design. And his colors. And his new girlfriend?? If I remember correctly from the Naxzela episode the helmeted alien sounded like a girl. ALSO ARE THOSE PUPS BESIDES OLIA HER KIDS?? PRECIOUS PUPPERS

• ROMELLE. we need more of her gdi-

• IS THE ALTEAN MERLA OH GOD LET IT BE MERLA I’M BEGGING YOU-

• Lastly, another of my favorite bits: Piloting the Lions through their bond. It just goes so well with my headcanon that the quintessence of the pilot actually MERGES with the quintessence of the pilot, so much that when they’re connected like that even if the body dies the mind still goes on. The difference for me between this season and what Shiro went through is that the paladins still have their bodies to ground them and help them keep control, while Shiro was just… Lost in the astral plane, barely able to separate his consciousness from the Lion’s (so much that this only happened twice when the paladins were purposely trying to connect with his quintessence/spirit in the astral plane). It’s not as “romantic” as the whole ‘black SAVED SHIRO’ but I really think his time in the Black Lion was really unsettling: not being Shiro and not being Black, but some weird mix of the two (his sarcastic confusion towards lance early in the season also supports this: he wasn’t HIMSELF anymore. Thinking like a normal person and not like a robot is WEIRD for him). It’s a headcanon though but it’s mine and I will fight you on this (actually no pls don’t fight me).

*** Overall!! While not my favorite season (that’s 2 and 6), season 7 wasn’t BAD. Maybe I just had lower expectations since I spoiled myself out of anxiety. It wont be like s2 and s6 where I’ll binge watch the eps over and over again, but it’s pretty comfortable with s1 and s3 in “eh it was fine, ok, I like it”.

[That said, there WERE quite a few things that pissed me off about this season, but everyone is so negative rn and quite a few people already covered part of those reasons, so I wanted to post about good things!! I’ll probably do another post on the Bad Things of this season.]

Meet William- A Team RNBW Story.

A story featuring William Wulfric of my RWBY OC team RNBW!

(note: This takes place in between “Landing Strategies” and “RNBW vs CAPA”)

Day 16 at Atlas Academy

Dear Journal,

My attempts to get into Ironwood’s good books haven’t gone all that well yet. I didn’t think these Atlas folks actually cared so much about all their military protocol stuff. The only key intel I’ve gotten so far is that apparently Ironwood’s looking for a student to work close to him on some really important military project. I’ll try my best to find out how I can get into this program as soon as I can.

Day 17 at Atlas Academy

Dear Journal,

Today I skipped lunch with Rusty and the rest to track down Team CAPA, a team of Atlas’s top students who were all on the ground floor of everything big that happened in Atlas. It wasn’t too tough to find them, since they always claimed ownership of the “good table” in the cafeteria (basically the one furthest away from Team FNKI and Team LMNS.)

Steeling my confidence, I asked the team on what they knew about Ironwood’s pet project. Ptolemy was the first to speak up, ranting about how this new project shut down his AKS-9 robotic suit training program, because apparently “The need for a robotic suit fueled by Aura is pointless now that we’ve found a better hybrid of the two” or something. Thankfully, Aurelia quickly shut him up and cut right to the chase. She said that she caught wind that Atlas’ top engineers had recently completed a new invention code-named “Project Pine Eyes”, and that Ironwood was looking for a top Huntsman or Huntress student in the school to oversee protection of the project. She also tossed out the name of Ciel Soleil, Ironwood’s current top candidate for this role. Intrigued, I asked Aurelia how the heck she knew all this. Of course she ignored me, and that, coupled with the fact that Aurelia’s younger sister and that guy with the katana were looking at me funny, were what I took as cues to leave.

For the rest of the day, I just sat around in class, trying to think of how I would handle this situation, and I think now I’ve got an idea of how to speak with this Ciel chick. Uggh, I wish Atlas would stop hiding behind all this red tape for once and just blast all the Grimm and White Fang out there to kingdom come. Us folks back in Vacuo would do that in an instant if we had their tech…

Day 18 at Atlas Academy

Dear Journal,

I managed to talk to Ciel today. Man, I don’t know what I was thinking when I said Atlas was stuffy before, this girl takes it to a whole other level. And to make things worse, she has practically NO ambition to fight for anything at all! At least people like Rusty or Lyme are here because they want to fight the threats to Remnant and protect people. Ciel’s just here because her family made her come here for prestige! Uggh...

But anyways, I asked her if she knew what someone would have to do to get into Project Pine Eyes, and she said she had no clue of any project of that name, but she said it might have something to do with constantly keeping records on everything that goes on in and out of classes, then followed it up by quietly muttering a bunch of what I assume were insults about me.

Day 19 at Atlas Academy

Actually had a chat with the General about Project Pine Eyes. I guess I forgot how protocol works around here, because Rusty wound up having to save me from the Atlesian Knights who dragged me away. I could have totally saved myself, though.

Weirdly, Aurelia’s sister Argenta, (or was it Agnes or something?) told me that she had more information on the inner workings of Atlas Academy-if I’d follow her to her younger sister’s café at some point.

To be honest, I feel kinda bad that I pretty much zoned out after listening to Agnes ramble on and on about Atlesian history for a couple hours (Mantle this, Grimm that, etc), and I just found myself trying not to stare at her younger sister who was being really suspicious, trying her best to mind her own business by scribbling on some paper at her counter. Uggh I’m so tired…

Day 20 at Atlas Academy

Almost got caught by Ms Star for dozing off in class today. Thankfully, Brandy woke me up before she noticed. If it was someone like Mr Jemmons, I don’t think I’d be here right now writing this! Still waiting with bated breath on more intel for the project.

Day 21 at Atlas Academy

Dear Journal,

Turns out this whole Project Pine Eyes thing was a huge bust. Ironwood just transferred Ciel off to some special new team to babysit the weird redheaded girl that Nappa’s been stalking for the past few weeks. Guess I dodged a bullet there. But at this point I seriously still need to get closer to Ironwood and clear my family’s name. Heck, the only thing big enough that can happen for me to impress Ironwood would be for some sort of war to break out to let me show him and Remnant what I’m capable of.

Oh. Well, Rusty and the rest are calling me to head to combat practice. Gotta go!

Almost didn’t post this for various reasons but I worked too hard on it for it not to see the light of day as such. Thanks to the friends that supported me. Reasonings for each song below! (though note, most of them were picked for lyric suitability then accuracy of tone and characters with two songs where so I could get a better guess at their tone and character arcs)

Aperture - It just feels like it really suits multiple characters and their motivations, and really, the working atmosphere of Aperture in general. Even before the incident, it was full of ambitious people who wanted to push limits and boundaries, do the impossible. They turned their backs on the natural order of things, of ordinary morality and did what they wished, even when it came to nothing and crumbled before their eyes. Everybody wanted to rule the world

Chell - Fast paced and badass just like the test subject herself, tons of lyrics that could directly apply to her, and a real ironic tongue in cheek nature to the title itself haha though its meaning is very true for her, since she does not get practice runs or retry’s. Its startlingly and strongly real. But once she is free of it all, that’s where the second song comes in. It’s still strong and powerful, but its tempered and much more relaxed. And full of little things like the appreciationg od sunlight and the sea that I feel would really resonate with Chell, being able to appreciate the little things without worrying about those people who’d come along and force her away from a life she has control over

Mel - Her first is bobby, and upbeat, but still carries a sense of hopelessness she pushes aside to stay strong and keep on going. Her time, her past is gone, and all she can do is keep going in hope she sees the dawn again. And when she finally does, its much more peaceful and steady. The second song is full of sunshine and serene sturdiness. Calm, with lines of farewell and a little loneliess and regret for leaving her friend, yet a need to return home and find her place

Doug - Doug was hard to pick for because of his eerie and surrell tone he deserved, but the strong passion for survival and the survival of those he needed in his life. He started the series of having two songs so I could better capture tones and character arcs. Anyway the first is 100% his passionate side and determination to survive. His support of Chell through his artworks and messages, his steely determination to keep going, despite everything working against him. The second is something like how I’d see his sentiments once he goes back and sacrifices his life freedom for Chell’s. It captures more of his ghost like prescence in the game, and how peaceful it is now he’s found a resting place. Though it still carries the message of his will to survive, asking Chell not to let him, or possibly even his memory, go.

Cube - Could any have fit better? I mean seriously, I was meddling around with friendship songs and the second I was reminded this existed there could not have been any others. Cube is not especially extrodinary in any fashion, not stronger, smarter or better then any other prop you will find in aperture. They are just a normal cube with a heart on it. But they will love you will all that is in them, never threaten to stab you in the back or abandon you, and you’ve always got a friend in them

Wheatley - This one is just funny to me haha, found it while looking for Fact’s song, and couldn’t leave it to memory obsuricty. Besides, it does a decent job covering how out of the know he is whille giving an optimistic spin, as Wheatley was apt to do. He just goes about, knowing nothing, making it to the end of each day. The second one however is definitely the more emotionaly powerful one for me, as the lyrics suit so well but the melody doesn’t go full angst and gives it a aptly regret like tune, sad punctured with harsh tones. And the lyrics were just perfect for a sad little space orb who made a lot of mistakes he regrets

Virgil - Virgil was one of the hardest to find songs for, but I stand by the ones I chose. The first one is something of a statement about his characters strength even while clearly feeling very low about himself. The second is not only a 70′s style song, but resonates with his learning to rely on other people, namely Mel. How you can overcome all obsticles with someone who you care for

Rick - Just a free wheeling song about enjoying the rush of breaking the rules in a fun western tune. Very adventurous

Space - I kinda feel bad about using a remix of someone elses voice but between the lyrics and the melody it was just too perfect. Besides I couldn’t find any others that matched up with it. So yeah heh

Fact - IT WAS SO HARD TO FIND A GOOD SONG FOR THIS ALTERNATIVE FACT GENERATOR. But in the end I think the choice was pretty good, though not nearly as detached or electric style as I would have prefered to find

Rainbow - Fun and jazzy, romantic and stylish, perfect! And the best part is you can see it from either Rainbow or Virgil’s perspective, freaking adorable gay babies

Cave - Nyeeeeeh I still kinda feel weird about these two but there alright. These two are definitely ment to mix together to get Cave’s cheery but harsh persona. That while he might have had good intentions, it was always to forward his own interests and get everything he wanted for his own. And that despite the consequences, he kept reaching for things beyond his right and never stopped, even after he passed away

A.E.G.I.S. - Aegis was always a protector figure to me. Kinda an old man, even though the game never gave you much of a human personality to him. Even if he went the wrong way about it, and tries very hard to kill you, it was all out of a need to protect what little was left of the facility. The first was found looking for Virgils, just a fun gruff at work song about an old officer. Took a while to find the second song, but it fit just right for the lonely old soilder who lost every battle that counted

Atlas and P-Body - Was there really any others I could have picked? Its like with cubes haha it was just too perfect for these adorable robots whose world literally revolves around each other

Caroline - While the tone is a little off, Caroline has always struck me as someone who always knew exactly what she wanted out of her existence, and worked hard to make that happen, with a couple silly moments along the way. She was an unstoppable force, who in the end fell to her own pursuits, at the hand of a person she trusted. The Fall, is definitely just the kinda music I imagine would have backgrounded Caroline’s shift into GLaDOS had we seen it. Sober, yet justaposed. She was a tragic figure, but it was also something of a fitting fall for someone who was “the backbone” of a highly corrupt and dangerous company. And of course it leads perfectly into the last song.....

GLaDOS - Here we are! Easily my proudest pick. Not only does the tone and melody fit her to a tee, the lyrics are almost literally perfect. No matter what you do to her, Glados is always on top of it in the end. She’d rule the world within a week if she put her mind to it

ENMY Chapter 56 - Grave Of The First Sin

Chapter Synopsis: On their journey to the Atlas Kingdom, Team ENMY and company stop briefly at the Island of Vytal. There, they explore the pacifist nation, and learn more about the secret history of Remnant.

Team RWBY is disbanded, and Yang must find herself new allies. For her, that might very well be yesterday’s enemies. Joining up with the likes of Emerald, Mercury, and Neo, the four will comprise Team Enemy.

Grave Of The First Sin

It can take a while to become friends.

But it takes next to nothing to become enemies.

“Sorry for making you guys come with me.”

“Come on, Ruby. We couldn’t let you go alone,” Jaune replied. And in a lower voice added, “Plus, your dad would’ve killed us if we did.”

“What was that?”

“Nothing.”

Riding along the ocean separating the continents of Vale and Atlas, was Team RNJR. The military transport ship they were currently on was filled with soldiers, but also those on a pilgrimage. The reason for that was, despite being bound for Atlas, their boat was required to make one stop beforehand. And that was the humble speck of land that laid between the two major land masses.

The Island of Vytal.

Texts are unclear how the pacifist nation came to be. Though, it was dubbed a nation, permanent settlement on the island was nigh impossible. And the island’s population stayed incredibly low due to its difficult sustainability.

It was an odd piece of land. A sacredness rooted there that kept all forms of corruption and change away. Crops could not grow on its soil. Wildlife and fish were absent. Any food supplies had to be imported from the main lands. In keeping line with the island’s theme, there were also no Grimm to speak of.

Great meadows of white flowers extended from each end of the isle. An eternal rain fell from its clear skies above, regardless of what season it was. Not a downpour, but like the heavens gently wept over.

As such, Vytal was dubbed a “holy” land by many. Buildings were erected, and statues were carved to pay homage to heroes and figures of the past. It was a symbol of peace and remembrance.

To no surprise, the site was selected for the signing of the treaty that ended the First Great War.

No weapons were allowed on the island. No wars, no conflict, no blemishes to taint this small corner of pure tranquility in Remnant.

And it was this place, Team RNJR’s ship made landfall, at least for one day.

“Seriously, though. Thanks again for coming with me. Are you sure it’s alright?” Ruby asked as they made off the boat.

“It’s fine. I think we all deserve a vacation after all those battles. Especially me!” Nora pitched her thumb to herself. “Cause I took down the most ships and creepy robots out of all of us!”

“Once again, I want to say that none of us knew that contest was going on,” Jaune commented.

“And that’s why you lost!”

“And once again, it should be reminded we are here to help Ruby see Weiss,” Ren added. “Who is currently ill.”

“……I remember! I totally remembered that was why we were doing this.”

“Nora…”

“What, Ren?! After fighting for how many weeks straight, you think we don’t deserve a breather?!”

“Just remember to be sensitive of Ruby. She’s likely to feel down over the news of Weiss’s condition and—”

“GUYS, HURRY UP! I WANNA PICK OUT SOME SOUVENIRS FOR DAD AND WEISS!”

“……Or not.”

“What was that Ren?”

“Forget I said anything.”

As the two walked off to join Ruby, Jaune observed the team from behind.

They didn’t act like it, but the war had taken its toll on all of them. The break couldn’t have come at a better time. Taiyang, Glynda, and Straw officially tasked them the mission of investigating the Atlas Kingdom, and finding the reason to their fleet’s sudden withdrawal, but he knew they were given some sorely needed R&R.

As he watched Ruby bounce up and down, window-shopping the various books and wares—he saw the change in her too. The scrapes and fraying at the edges. The extra effort she put into staying positive. There was no way Weiss’s condition didn’t affect her, on top of everything else that happened; Vice Headmaster Hook, her Uncle Qrow, Yang. But there was also a new strength there too. A resilience and lack of fragility. The hardened Huntress she envisioned herself was showing signs of taking shape.

Jaune thought he wouldn’t be a good leader if he didn’t realize that much. Still, there was always some room for growth.

He caught up to the girl and patted her shoulder.

“Ruby?”

“Yeah, Jaune?”

“I hate to tell you this…” he squinted, bracing himself for what would happen next. “But we need to hand over our weapons or they won’t let us into the city.”

“………NOOOOOOO!!! NOT MY CRESCENT ROSE~~!!!!!”

* * * * *

“What was that?”

“Quiet, you.” Emerald smacked Mercury in his fake bandaged mouth. “What part of ‘shattered jaw’ do you not understand?”

“You know, you’re enjoying that way too much.”

“You bet your crippled ass I am.”

As Emerald guided Mercury’s wheelchair, she fought the seductive urge to let her partner go flying down the ship’s plank and into the watery depths below.

“Don’t do it.”

“What.”

“Don’t be an asshole.”

“What are you talking about, Merc? I’m not *Pft* I’m not thinking about anything right now!” she tried to keep a straight face.

“I want Yang to push me.”

“She only has one arm.”

“I don’t care. I’ll wheel myself.”

“I can’t let you do that my poor, defenseless, stupid friend.”

“Watch the ramp!”

The wheelchair hit the pavement painfully.

“Whoops! My bad~♪”

Following behind the two, was Yang with her hair stuffed under a hood. Her Ember Celica was unattached, and Neo pretended to help as her crutch.

“So, this is Vytal, huh? It’s weird.”

“How so, Ms. Yang?” Masa asked behind her.

“I don’t know… Not to sound all feng shui or anything, but the energy’s weird here. It’s almost like the Towers. Whatever this place is, it’s really close to the Never Realm.”

“I see…”

“You okay there, Masa?”

“This one does not understand what you are eluding to.”

“I dunno. Just feels like, since we got here, you’ve been kinda down.”

“You can tell, this one asks in disbelief. Could this be due to the compound effects of your Maiden’s inheritance and Semblance?”

“No,” Yang answered shortly. “I just think we know each other enough to know.”

“I see…”

“Wanna talk about it?”

“……The offer is appreciated. But this one would rather keep certain things to one’s self. At least for the time being.”

“’Kay.”

Yang tapped the engineer’s arm, who only continued to stare back expressionlessly.

“……How about you? What do you think of the island?” she asked her fellow Maiden, who was the last behind them.

“The same.”

Yang waited for more.

“That’s it?”

“I don’t like it. And it doesn’t serve my purposes, so I have no inclination to care,” Cinder replied with a bored tone.

“Typical.”

After being checked for weapons, they were let into the main city thoroughfare. Temples forged of pure white stonework lined the streets. Everywhere they looked, there were displayed works of art; whether in word, brush, or clay, if they searched for it, they would find it.

Perhaps the nation’s citizens practiced their arts and crafts with such devotion, because Vytal was the only place they knew such things would be kept safe. For it was a too frequent an occasion that works of culture and history itself was changed at the convenience of conquerors.

“Feels kinda naked without our weapons,” Mercury commented.

“Speak for yourself. I’ve still got my Semblance, and three living weapons with us.” Emerald glanced back at Cinder, Yang, and Neo. “Honestly, short of Raven bringing the whole Mistral Armada, it feels like we’re untouchable.”

“What did you always say about being overconfident and letting our guard down? I think it was ‘don’t’.”

Emerald kicked Mercury’s seat.

“I can’t believe you’re the one that’s reminding me that. We do have a habit of getting our backs stabbed when we lower our guard. Still, I don’t get the feeling we’ll be ambushed here.”

“You think Vulcan’s above doing that?”

“He’d be an idiot to take us right now.”

“And you would be fools to start a fight here.”

The two looked behind to see Masa glaring at them.

“None of you are to start trouble while on this island, this one speaks seriously. If you do, this one will never forgive you, and a dire price will be rectified. Is that understood?”

Under the engineer’s pale-shadowed irises, the members of the group nodded in turn. They could all sense something was drastically different with Masa’s temper. So normally deadpan, but now appeared on the verge of being overcome with emotion.

* * * * *

“‘Summer Rose, leader of STRQ Team,” Ruby read the inscription carved below the statue. “‘Honored and Remembered for her service of Remnant. Accomplishments include: The Suppression of Monstro, The Slaying of Ansbach, The Capture of Hunter-killer Jek, and her part played in overthrowing the Mantle Monarchy, among other feats of bravery.’”

She eyed the statue of her mother with a curious wonder. Its size was considered average, in comparison to the many others that littered the city. Most of Summer’s appearance was obscured by her cloak and hood. In spite of that, the sculpture gave off a stoic impression. Whether it was the artist’s interpretation, or how her mother really was, Ruby yearned to know.

She made a mental note to track down some books on her if possible, but right now, her team had a more immediate opportunity.

“This is impossible…” Jaune muttered. “We’re never gonna find any real information buried in all this!”

“Patience, Jaune,” Ren advised, while shelving one book and pulling out another. “An opportunity like this doesn’t present itself often.”

“Do you know how many ‘old man’s have been written into these stories, Ren?! THOUSANDS!”

“At least your topic is bearable. The myths surrounding ‘silver-eyed warriors’ become increasingly surreal with each volume. Bloodline of the first Humans, Werewolves, Aliens from outer space?” Ren frowned, and shoved another book into the shelf.

While perusing Vytal’s city, Ren and Ruby found themselves drawn to the number of books being sold. Among them, they found an unbelievable collection of strange and unique stories kept on the island in pristine condition. Seeing it as a chance to learn more about Ozpin, the Maidens, and Ruby’s ancestry as a Silver-Eyed warrior, the group decided they could not let the moment pass.

The only problem was, just as there were an amount of factual recounting, so too was a greater amount of fictional exaggerations. And it was proving difficult to sort through which was which, as the team quickly learned.

“Hey, guys! I found something!” Nora came at them, waving her hand. Unlike the rest of her teammates, given her habit of finding research sleep-inducing, she was tasked with searching the sculptures.

Ruby, Ren, and Jaune immediately followed the girl to a circular mausoleum of statues. It seemed they were carved during different periods in time. The most recent being closest to the bottom. There, they saw a very familiar figure.

“‘Ozpin Verde, Headmaster of Beacon Academy’,” Ruby read. “Did Professor Ozpin have a last name?”

“I don’t believe so,” Ren answered thoughtfully.

“Let’s see: Mentor to GIAS Team. Youngest Headmaster to be named. Part played in Mantle Monarchy, blah blah blah,” her voice trailed as she read more of the accomplishments. “Nothing much we didn’t already know.”

“Boo!” Nora yelled.

“Nice try, though. Hm?”

“What is it, Ruby?” Jaune asked.

The girl looked at the statue next to Ozpin’s.

“‘Myrdin Zaffre’, the Headmaster before Ozpin. Says here he was a Grand Strategist during the First Great War. Also, he was Ozpin’s mentor. Do you think…?”

“A past reincarnation of the ‘old man’,” Ren finished the thought.

“Then… all of these…” Ruby looked on the rows of Beacon’s past Headmasters. “Where’s the first?!”

Together, they ran up the stairs and past each older sculpture like traveling back in time.

“Headmaster Who… Luka… Olorin… Strange… Here! Huh?”

They stopped at an unnamed statue. Its form and inscription had been damaged beyond anything they could make out.

“Yes. It is a very odd piece,” one of the passing workers commented. “Records of the first Headmaster of Beacon have all been erased. For that to have happened, it must have occurred before our institution was founded.”

“A dead end?!” Ruby cried.

“I’m afraid so,” the worker sympathized. “I, too have been curious about the first Headmaster’s origins. What would have motivated anyone to erase his or her memory. I’ve been on this island for a long time, and only found a few pieces that are relatively close in age. Each of them, just as obscure.”

“Can you tell us where they are?”

“I don’t think you would glean much information from—”

“Please, tell us!”

“Oh, okay, young lady. Well, one of them is a staff. It stands in the middle of the city. There’s nothing much to it, really. There was also a book I found once when I was younger, but the contents of it made no sense. I can’t remember what was in it, actually. Never did find it again.”

“Any other ones?”

“Your best bet would probably be the ruins that lie on the eastern edge of the city. I still sometimes go there to see if there’s something I can uncover.”

“A whole ruin?!” Ruby’s eyes lit up.

“Yes. It is a very breathtaking sight. Though, sad. I urge you to be respectful there.”

“We will! Thank you!”

Team RNJR rushed out of the building and stopped at the entrance.

“So, where should we go? The staff at the center of the city or the ruins to the east?” Ren posed.

Ruby scrunched her face and tapped her foot in troubled contemplation.

“Well……”

* * * * *

On the eastern edge of Vytal’s city, Team ENMY’s group walked the ruins.

It was nothing like they had ever seen before.

An indescribable feeling of sorrow filled each of them. The smell of rain and white lilies covering the grounds smelled especially potent. The air felt hush and substantial, like it were something solid. A tender wind swept through, carrying white petals into the air.

Positioned in rows of circles, were statues. Each bending a knee, bowing to the center. Tears streaked across their cheeks, with tightly shut eyelids. Their forms varied, none of them duplicated. It was likely every sculpture was carved in the likeness of an individual. Most expressed sadness, others a mixture of anger—all with an indescribable sense of loss.

Carefully, the group moved past these life-modeled stones, and followed Masa’s lead to the center, where the carvings faced.

There, they found a monument. No inscription, but a bowl of ever-burning fire—undiminished by the rain falling onto it.

Masa kneeled at the foot of the marker, so much like the statues around.

It was old, Yang thought. All of it was.

Her acute senses told her life was ancient here. At some point in time, an unfathomable amount of emotion concentrated on this single point in history. An event that probably shifted the fate of Remnant itself.

After taking in the immaculate artistry put into making the ruins, Yang was left with an odd inkling. Like there was something right at the tip of her tongue, a thought she couldn’t quite place. Then, she turned her eyes towards the “shrine” Masa made her prayers to.

Yang immediately stiffened, and not to much surprise, so did Mercury. The two looked at each other with the same exact thoughts. Of their group, they had the most experience with this specific work, to the point where seeing it was almost like a craftsman’s signature.

“Hey, Maz?” Yang started. “That thing over there looks pretty old.”

“Yes,” Masa answered with a flat tone.

“Right, it’s just that—it kinda reminds me of the grave you made for Victoria.”

“……So, it does.”

Yang and Mercury exchanged worried looks.

“Um, how is that possible? Haha… I mean, you don’t look that old.”

“That’s because she’s one of them,” Emerald crossed her arms. “Isn’t that right, Mazzie? Like Salem. Like Ozpin. You’re the same—an immortal.”

Masa slowly got to her feet and turned to them.

“Not quite in the same category, but there exists a similarity.”

“I knew it.”

“I am grateful you did not ask.”

“Gotta say, every time you switch up referring yourself from ‘this one’ and ‘I’, I get a little shiver.”

“Very perceptive, Ms. Emerald. You are correct to be wary.”

Just then, the whole world took an abrupt shift. Time halted in place and sound muted.

After what seemed like a breath, time resumed its flow. The white petals floating in the wind turned black. The skies above splashed with a dark-reddish hue. And from seemingly out of nowhere, a shadily dressed figure appeared and made her way to the center monument.

Her hair and skin were white as bone. Eyes like endless abyss. And a presence that reached out from her, so dreadful, it made Yang swallow hard.

The girl took in the sudden change in her surroundings. Besides her, Masa, and Cinder, the rest of their group looked to be still frozen in time. Going by the familiar atmosphere, Yang came to only one conclusion.

They had been pulled into the Never Realm.

The mysterious woman, who had appeared so suddenly, stopped next to Masa without paying attention to any of them. Her fingers conjured a black mist, and then, thread a few stems of red spider lilies from the air, placing them into a nearby pot. She finished a silent prayer before addressing them.

Cinder was the first to meet her gaze. A deep intensity resounding in her voice.

“Salem.”

* * * * *

“Isn’t it strange the way you just meet people at graves?”

“Yes. Of course. How strange it is to meet an acquaintance, before a grave, on the anniversary of their death,” the other responded sarcastically. “Truly strange.”

On the shores of Vacuo’s beach, two elderly women stood before a stone marking, where the ashes of Shepherd were once spread.

Unlike the continents of its counterparts, the steppes of this Kingdom experienced the same smoldering heat it always had. Cold never found a home in Vacuo. And it never would.

“The war is progressing. Do you still plan to do nothing?”

“Again, the war,” Temujin rolled her one good eye. “Why is everyone always asking me about that? Surely, the illustrious Headmaster of Shade Academy carries more weight to her word than I?”

“Don’t even joke about that.”

“Who was joking? And what crawled up your dusty cunt today?”

“I would rather you restrain yourself from such crude language. Especially in front of your brother.”

“Peh! My brother’s not here. His crisped bits are floating all over the ocean. Probably long eaten by some fish by now. That, or being sniffed up some sailor’s nose.” Even this crass joke got a chuckle out of the other. “And alive or dead, I speak the way I want to speak. I am the queen of Vacuo, after all.”

“As usual, you only invoke your title to serve your foolish shenanigans. I should remember to record that next time. Then, we could finally thrust some real responsibility on you.”

“Sour puss! Has becoming a teacher done so much to wear away the one I used to call my best friend, Minerva? Hm? Perhaps we should have erected two graves, then.”

Magic sparked from the other’s fingers testily.

Her name was Minerva Calico, and she was the Headmaster of Shade Academy. Elderly in age. Though, discolored now, her hair had patches of orange, black, and gray. Her nose was sharp with a bit of a hook. The glasses she wore served to further accentuate her firm features, which communicated a sense of intelligence. And atop her head, were a pair of worn cat ears.

Unlike Temujin, and many other citizens of Vacuo, the Headmaster was fond of wearing more formal attire. Even in the heat, she chose to don clothes of a modern Victorian-era. Similar to what the military officials in Atlas wore, but darker.

While the two old friends bantered, another figure approached from behind.

The young Faunus placed her hand just beyond the stone marking. The tide came in and filled her cupped palm with seawater. With slow and purposed motion, she took it to her mouth and drank.

“Ilia. How goes the war in Atlas?” Temujin asked.

“You despise it when others ask you, yet you do not hesitate to ask it of others,” Minerva grumbled.

“Oh, quiet, you.”

“Bad,” Ilia answered. “It’s a melting pot waiting to tip over. Adam’s White Fang, the industrialists, the aristocrats, and the poor. They’re about to come to a head. And to make things worse, Weiss Schnee’s disappeared off the face of the Kingdom.”

“Hm. Too bad. I liked her.”

“No, you didn’t.”

“No. But she was useful. Oh, well. Spilled milk and all that.”

“For some reason, the city’s Aegis Defense System is down too.”

“Ooh~ That is certainly terrible—for them. Sounds like the dominoes are falling for the Kingdom of Atlas.”

“Sure, does.”

“Ilia. Do remember to attend classes tomorrow,” Minerva interceded. “As noble as your extracurriculars are, your education is just as essential.”

“Are you serious?”

“Do I appear to be joking?”

Ilia gulped.

“Nope.”

Temujin could barely stifle her cackling in the background.

“Come now. Show the child some leniency, you crotchety old cat.”

“You’re the last one I want to hear from on the subject, you conniving old fox.” Minerva turned to Ilia again. “Now, that I think of it, I’m sure I could scrounge up one or two professors to provide some supplemental lessons, if you would accompany me back to the school.”

The young girl looked past the Headmaster at Temujin, but the one-eyed woman tried not to meet her gaze.

“Temujin!”

“I can’t save you, when she’s like this.”

“You said, you would talk to her!”

“Oho~ And the truth comes to light,” Minerva’s pupils sharpened to tiny slits. “So, you made my student a promise you had no way of keeping.”

“As queen of Vacuo, I sanction Ilia Amitola… not in trouble. And, em, absolved of all crimes. Pardoned of any and all infractions of civil disobedience. Whatever the words are.”

“On an authority you do not possess, no less.”

“I—ah di-di-di-di-“

Minerva snatched one of Temujin’s wolf ears, and yanked on it. Even Ilia couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She knew the Headmaster was frightening at times, but treating the war hero, who carried the fight against the Third Crusade, who ruled Vacuo and united its people as its savior—like a misbehaving juvenile was beyond what she could grasp. Yet, there it was.

“Foul witch! Release me from your magic!”

“It’s my hand, you senile old hag.”

“I will fight your oppression and di-di-di-di!”

“Ilia,” Minerva chose to ignore the ruler of Vacuo for now. “You were accompanying me back to the school now, I believe?”

Ilia bobbed her head faster than she ever had in her entire life.

“Do you not feel shame treating your oldest friend this way, in front of her deceased brother?” Temujin grunted.

“Not another word from you. I feel inclined to take you back to the school, as well.”

“Ah.” Temujin stopped struggling. “I think it would be better if you two stayed a while longer.”

Minerva noticed the sudden seriousness in her tone, while the other slipped from her grasp.

“Why…?”

“I think I’d rather have even numbers—just in case.”

Before the Headmaster could question further, her answers were given.

“Strange how you just meet people at graves, isn’t it?” a voice echoed from the ether, as a dark portal opened.

Out from the vacuum came Raven, followed by Blake and Adam.

Minerva sighed.

“Truly, you are your mother’s daughter.”

“What does that mean?”

“She was being smug about it being Shepherd’s anniversary, so it wasn’t strange, or some cleverness,” Temujin explained.

“Uh huh…”

The three newcomers went to the edge of the tide like Ilia had before, and took a handful of seawater. After they drank, they joined the other three again.

“You look well, Headmaster.”

“Thank you, Blake. You do, as well. I suppose it would be too much to assume you would like to resume the rest of the semester?”

“I’m sorry for disappearing like that.”

“Not like that’s anything new.”

“…Ilia.”

“Blake.” The girl switched glares to the other. “Adam…”

“Ilia…”

As the three teenagers traded greetings and pursed looks, the older ones watched.

“Awkward~” Temujin whispered to Minerva.

“As entertaining as teenage drama is, we should talk,” Raven said.

“Hm. Barely recognized you without that stupid thing on your head.”

“I liked that mask.”

“You look cuter now.”

“I guess, you have Adam to thank for that. Now, onto business.”

“You sure it’s business you came for…… and not a fight?”

An overwhelming predator threat exuded from Temujin’s voice, and put everyone on edge. They could feel Aura swell from her body. And in the moment it took to react, Ilia, Adam, and Blake hovered their hands over their weapons.

The ruler of Vacuo broke into a crooked smile.

“Rambunctious, aren’t we?”

“Could we please not try to frighten the children?” Raven played along with the joke.

“Oh, you used to be fun.”

“Temujin.” Adam stepped forward.

“Oh, here we go…”

“The time of the White Fang is over. For yours and mine. Now, we should unite our people, not just within a single Kingdom, but all of Remnant.”

“Under who, young pup? You?...... Or the Witch?”

“It’s what’s best for the Faunus people. You can join us, or at least…”

“Yes?”

“Stay out of our way.”

“Ohoho~” Temujin chuckled. “Unfortunately, if you’re hoping to strong arm this old coot, you’ll have to do more bite than bark, little Adam. There’s scarce anything left in this world that can frighten me anymore. That includes your all-powerful, all-knowing master.”

“Why can’t you see the sense in this? We could end the war now if Vacuo joined Mistral. The first two nations to support Faunus in a mutual alliance? It would bring an end to the conflict, and the start of a new era.”

“…”

“Vale will fall, and Atlas even sooner. Our victory is all but written in the history books. And when we win, we’ll change those nations just like Mistral and Vacuo. This is what Shepherd died for. What you fought for. Let us honor the cause. No more lives lost. We can bring a decisive end to all of this now.”

“…Your speech has grown more eloquent. I’m impressed. Does the Witch wish for the same thing?”

“I am the Hand of Salem. We made a pact to act in each other’s best interests, but I know she shares the same need to help our people as I do. With her power, I am making our dreams real! She wants to speak with you, if you would just meet her.”

“Sounds completely reasonable.”

“Then—”

“Yes, it would be rude of me not to respond to Salem. Make sure to remember this right. *Ahem* Regarding a future appointment…”

Temujin took a lengthy amount of time to clear her throat loudly. And with a swift whip of her head, hocked a heavy spit on the ground.

She turned and roped her arm around Raven’s. “So, it’s been some time…” With her other arm, she took Blake’s. “Have either of you killed anyone noteworthy? An old enemy of mine, perhaps?”

“I happened to stumble across a few Crusaders. Some during the revolution of Mistral and the invasion of Vale. There was also a thing with Vermillion, who funded part of the Crusader’s expedition,” Raven replied.

“Are these parties still with us?”

“Who?”

“Hohoho! That’s my girl. Minerva! Prepare the tea!” Temujin clamored, while dragging her “daughter” and “granddaughter” in the direction of Shade Academy.

“Unbelievable,” the Headmaster massaged her brow.

“Is this really, alright?” Ilia asked.

“If it was, she wouldn’t have asked us to stay. I swear, that woman could start a war with the first word, and then end it in the same sentence.” She side-glanced Adam, who was still stewing with rage. In a quieter voice, she spoke. “Keep your eyes on Blake. I will pay careful attention to Raven and Adam. Best not to let your guard down.”

“Yes, Headmaster.”

As Ilia stared ahead to the awkwardly smiling Blake, their eyes met briefly. The chameleon Faunus felt her ears grow hot, followed by a trace of forlorn feelings.

Right.

Don’t let your guard down.

* * * * *

“Don’t let your guard down.”

“I know that,” Yang answered Cinder from the side of her lips. “So, that’s Salem?”

“The one and only.”

While the two Maidens struck fighting poses, Salem spoke to Masa.

“How many lifetimes have passed, since we last met?”

“Only two for this one.”

“And five for myself.”

“…”

“Why do you lend assistance to his cause?”

“You know I would never.”

“Then, why?”

“My only allegiances lie with my patrons. Whether they are your ally… or your enemy is no matter of consequence.”

“It matters to me, Masa. I take it very personally.”

“I’ve armed plenty of your champions throughout the ages, including ones you have now. Why do you care—”

“Because I’m close,” Salem said with emphasis. “So very close. Now, more than I ever was. And if not Ozpin, there exists only one other, who could possibly stand in my way.”

“…”

“Do not make me ask again… old friend.”

Salem turned from the monument and walked to one of the statues nearby. Her hand touched its shoulder, causing Masa to feel a cold chill. The Witch continued moving until she was before Cinder and Yang.

“Maidens Spring and Fall,” she extended an open hand to one, and then the other. “I offer my greetings. Such young and fierce ladies as yourselves, I am sure you must be bounding with energy.” The dark veins in her skin quickened. “But I will not tolerate any acts of violence on this land.”

“Ms. Yang, Ms. Cinder. You are not allowed to fight here,” Masa added.

“You did not warn them beforehand?”

“I did not expect you to show yourself here of all places.”

“And why not? This is a land of peace. The only time the old one and I broke bread. So, it stands that this is the best place for… open discussion. Wouldn’t you agree, dearest Cinder?”

Cinder and Yang traded looks, but under Masa’s prolonged stare, they slowly dropped their arms to the side. Although loosened from their fighting stance, the two were ready for battle should the situation arise. Their materialized Auras trailing from their silhouettes was proof of that.

Seeing that it was enough, Salem resumed.

“Cinder. I know some unpleasantness unfolded between my followers and yours, but all can be made bygones.”

“If I join you again.”

“If you join me again.”

Cinder’s jaw twitched.

“I heard your whispers, Salem. The ones you spoke, when you thought no one was listening. You betrayed me. Now, you will suffer the consequences.”

“Little. Spoiled. Brat. Tsk tsk tsk. You accuse me of betrayal? I took you in, when your beloved Raven abandoned you. When you wandered Mistral, crying, lost, pleading for someone in the middle of the woods—I answered. When you were too weak and helpless, who gave you direction? Who gave you focus? You only found Amber Autumn, because of me. And was I not the one who guided you to the faithful followers you have now?”

Salem waved her fingers, and Emerald and Mercury began floating in the air. Yang and Cinder bit the inside of their mouths, struggling to remind themselves things were not so real here.

“And despite your betrayal, I am gracious enough to welcome you back into the fold, with all forgiven. After everything I gave you, how do you accuse me of betrayal?”

“Allegiances are not so simple, Salem. They aren’t like the scales you hold so preciously. A single wrong act is enough to make us enemies. You can dangle all the ‘goodwill’ you’ve done for me as much as you like, but it doesn’t change the fact that you left me to rot in the Never Realm to suit your own ends.”

“I was going to free you. Did you truly believe I had abandoned you? Like Raven had?”

“You betrayed me first.”

“Tsk tsk tsk. Foolish child. You’ll rue this decision. I pity what lays for you next.”

“…”

“My poor girl, if you stayed by my side, you would have had everything you wanted. Your Kingdom, your power, even Raven. But now…” the Witch sighed. “You’ve thrown it all away for nothing. Out of some misplaced pride or ill-conceived understanding? I’m not quite sure. But I implore you, Cinder. Think carefully. Choose wisely.”

Salem stopped waving her fingers, causing Emerald and Mercury to shatter to the ground like glass.

As strong-willed as Cinder was, doubt still strick her heart like one of the shards rolling at her feet. She questioned if she made the wrong decision. Maybe Salem was right. The Witch’s forces already owned Mistral. Vale and Atlas were on the verge of collapse. And Raven had rejoined Salem’s circle.

It wouldn’t be just her who would pay the price either, as she stared into the fragmented faces of Emerald and Mercury.

Words caught in her throat. Cinder struggled to say something. To form a retort, or even negotiate…

But before she could, something akin to a volcano erupted beside her.

Scorching, gold feathers exploded in every direction. The ground Yang stood on fractured into an array of fissures. On her shoulders, the shadows of two massive creatures loomed.

…

After her mother named Salem her enemy, Yang wanted a chance to meet the Witch. To measure her, and make the choice, whether to fight her or not.

And it was now, that they met.

It was now, Yang made her choice.

For before her, she knew existed a being that represented everything she fought contrary to. The Witch twisted and construed. She controlled people at their weakest. Caged them within themselves. She took away and granted some twisted, deformed version of people’s wishes in return. This being cheated the world, and called it balance.

And maybe worst of all—

Nothing seemed real in her empty, black eyes.

It was a sensation she felt before from Ozpin. Something that all immortals possibly possessed to a certain degree.

“You’ve lived too long,” Yang snarled. “You don’t care about this world. You don’t know it. You don’t even see it.”

Every syllable sent a shock through the air. Her voice boomed with the crack of a storm. The emptiness of the Realm filled with her presence.

“You’re nothing but a leftover of the past, trying to stop the future. But I won’t let you do it. Not anymore.”

For the first time, Masa saw an expression Salem had yet only reserved for the old one alone. Now, it surfaced in the wake of Yang’s words. A look of pure and murderous contempt.

“To think, you’d spit on my hand before I even offered it.”

“I don’t want anything you can give.”

All the flowers in the field painted with dark ink. A violent gale picked up in response. The sky itself, felt like it sunk closer to the earth.

“You don’t know what you’re starting, child. You don’t know what you’re fighting.”

“I doubt you ever got your own hands dirty in your whole life.”

“You speak of matters you do not know.”

“Am I? Cause your hands look a little soft from here.”

“Shortsighted, child,” Salem bore a wicked grin. “If you want to know proof of what I am capable of, try not to look at such small things. Broaden your vision, and you will see it anywhere.”

With a slight raise of her chin, Yang followed the Witch’s notion to the sky.

There, the fractured moon hung. Larger than life. A floating piece of destroyed world.

“You think you’ve seen battle? You think this war is so great? I’ve seen gods bleed and realms sunder. What you know as the world is nothing more than a grain of dirt in my hand.”

“I’m calling bullshit.”

“……I don’t lie.”

“Fight me.”

With a few choice words, Yang challenged the apocalyptic Witch to a brawl, and brought time to a slow crawl.

“Choose your next words carefu—”

“FIGHT. ME.”

Yang’s Aura scorched like a nearby solar flare. The meadow caught in flames, while the moon fractured further into pieces.

“I could have given you anything, stupid girl. Your friends, your mother, even your arm back.”

“’Kay. This is getting embarrassing. Like my friend would say, if she were here, and you didn’t try to scare us by dragging us into the Never Realm, ‘there’s nothing sadder than a conman, who just failed her con.’”

“Remnant will know peace by my hand. And I’ll make sure to build it on the foundations of your corpse.”

“You say, ‘peace’,” Cinder rejoined. “But what I think you really mean is control.” The young woman found her courage again and matched Yang’s challenge. “And I, nor the people of Remnant, will ever be controlled.”

“Especially, by some insufficient relic of the past.”

* * * * *

“And then, what? You guys just dropped the mic, and bailed?” Mercury asked, unable to contain his excitement.

“Something of that nature,” Cinder smiled.

Shortly after Yang and Cinder’s declaration of hostilities, the Fall Maiden severed the connection, and brought the three back from the Never Realm.

As they boarded their boat once more to sail away, Cinder summarized to the others what happened during their brief pause in time.

“I wish I could’ve been there,” Emerald said.

The petite Neo silently pumped her arms vigorously flipping the middle finger.

“And flipped her the bird on the way out,” Mercury added.

“That too. Sounds like you missed a real opportunity, Yang. Yang?”

“Hm? Yeah.”

The girl in question had her attention taken away by the sight of the lone engineer, gazing at the island off the railing.

She joined her, leaning her arms across the boat’s metal bars.

“What’s on your mind, Maz? Worried about what Salem said back there?”

“No, actually. It was what you said.”

“Me?”

“……I am also an immortal, Ms. Yang. And I may have done a disservice to the people of this era in simply existing here.”

“You’re not the same as her.”

“Am I not?”

“No. You’re not.” Yang hugged Masa from behind. “You care. You’ve loved and lost. You feel… I saw it with Victoria.”

“…She was the friend of this vessel. Not me.”

“And what does your ‘vessel’ say about that?”

Masa clasped her hand to her heart.

“She agrees with you.”

“See? You live in this world, Maz. You let yourself become a part of it, and you let things in. That’s all the proof you need. And it makes every difference. I know I’m glad you’re here.”

“…I see.” The engineer lowered her gaze, hiding her expression. “Thank you, Ms. Yang—this one thanks you.”

Together, the two watched the island until it verged disappearing into the horizon.

“Still, what’s the deal with Vytal? As places go, it was definitely one of the weirdest. Can’t imagine what it’s like for the few people living on it.”

“The island was never built with the purpose of cohabitation, this one answers.”

“Hm………… Wait. Built?”

Yang looked down into the empty eyes staring back at her.

“No… way…”

She tried to laugh it off and dismiss it, but what the engineer implied was almost too strange not to take as real. There was also the hint Salem dropped about the moon. Yang pretended not to mind it at the time, but the scope of what “immortals” could do was quickly becoming something she couldn’t begin to grasp.

“The island was also never called ‘Vytal’ until the First Great War,” Masa added, matter of factly.

“Yeah? What was it originally called?

They saw the last of the island setting into the distance.

“The Grave of the First Sin.”

* * * * *

(A few days later)

Coming up on the shores of the Atlas continent, everyone on the boat saw the fires light the dead of night.

Smoke rose from the city, and as far as they were, they could hear the screams of its citizens. Along with a cacophony of unearthly noises from the Grimm.

No one could believe what they were witnessing. The Kingdom was consumed in chaos.

Roaming Jotunn giants limped into the capital with little resistance. Smaller species of the dark creatures bound for the grounds in stampeding waves.

Airships dotted the skies, trying to pose some form of defense. Various mechs, with the size of people to the girth of buildings, fought as sentinels for their makers’ homes.

Only one sentence was on the tip of each of everyone’s lips. Some gasped it, while others shouted at the top of their lungs.

Atlas is falling.

Accidentally deleted my Tyrian and Watts asks while I was trying to fix a mistake so... Sorry about that, everyone! Here they are! Tyrian and Watts for the RWBY character asks!

Let’s do Tyrian first, because I have less to say about him, I feel like.

My top three ships for the character

Tyrian/Watts. Dysfunctional villainous romance of the century, no one knows how they’ve managed to make it to their tenth anniversary without killing each other, including them. Tyrian/Salem is my second top ship for him. Major Bellatrix/Voldy vibes with this one, but I could see it. Tyrian/Hazel is my third ship for lack of options. Does this one make sense? No. But I can at least see Tyrian being super flirty and Hazel being endlessly tired, but never really stopping it. (Also I hate Hazel so much lol.)

My three least favorite ships for the character

Tyrian/Qrow sucks for me. Like... I kinda feel like two people fighting each other just gets shippers, which is fine and totally understandable. But for me, Tyrian poisoning Qrow and almost killing him and calling his beloved niece a bitch and then killing Clover is a big no from me, dog. On that note! Tyrian/Clover is also one big no from me, since Clover murdered him. And Tyrian/Ozpin is another really big no from me. Tyrian and his crazy Salem worship can stay five hundred and fifty feet away from my son.

My biggest criticism for the character

They went a little too much on the crazy in the fourth and fifth season and it made him feel annoying. Like, I don’t mind the Bellatrix vibes, but I do mind the movie version Bellatrix vibes, sometimes. It just got kinda annoying. I wish his crazy was always more on the dangerous side and less on the kooky side, but that’s just personal opinions.

My favorite thing about the character

The way people are so uncomfortable around him. Whenever Tyrian talks to Emerald or Mercury, he’s honestly freaky. Like both me and the characters are waiting for him to snap. That’s a great quality in a villain that we’re meant to hate or love to hate. He has a real presence and it’s enjoyable.

A headcanon I have about them

Tyrian doesn’t often try to act normal, but he can, and he’s got a great ‘respectable, cool guy’ act that’s actually a little reminiscent of Qrow or Clover. He’s even passed himself as a Huntsman here and there.

What I would change about them if I was making a re-write

More involvement in volumes 4 and 5, and I’d treat him a bit more seriously and make him a bit more dangerous. Maybe I’d have him wound a member of Team RNJR in his attack as well as poison Qrow (maybe give Jaune a reason to unlock his semblance in season 4 and in response to the pain of a member of his team. Also, his ‘Tyrian purple’ color should be more than just the color of his eyes. Like, how come so many RWBY characters season 4 and onward have such boring colors? I’d give Tyrian some strong purple and pink.

What I I think of their character allusion and what (if anything) I would change about it

Tyrian alludes to the animal fable ‘the Scorpion and the Frog,’ and that’s... really in name only, I think. A part of me wants to give them some kind of points for having Qrow work with him against Clover, only for Tyrian to kill Clover, which lines up with his ‘its just my nature’ scorpion stinging the frog so that they’ll both drown and die. But they didn’t mean for Qrow to really be wrong! They didn’t mean for the lesson to be ‘Qrow shouldn’t have trusted the poisonous villain’ it was ‘wowza does Qrow’s semblance hurt him. :( Too bad Clover got himself killed.’ Which makes the whole allusion kind of suck.

Now for Watts, the single best villain in my opinion.

My top three ships for the character

Tyrian/Watts. See above. This ship would be a dysfunctional mess, but it’d be a wild ride. Watts/Villain!Ironwood. I kind of hate this ship when it’s ‘fallen hero turned villain’ Ironwood. But if he actually had been written as a secret villain or obviously headed that way from the start, I can see him and Watts also being a dysfunctional mess of a wild ride ship, only with way more ‘evil power couple’ vibes than Tyrian and Watts would have. Also my favorite version of this features Watts having been the one to build Penny (maybe by stealing the plans from Pietro) and him and Ironwood raising a still bright and cheerful, still innocent and trusting, villain Penny who will attack to kill with a smile on her face and a ‘it was nice meeting you!’ And this is very weird and niche but Watts/Evil Stepsister (specifically the one with the sharp bangs and highlights.) Someone sent me an ask saying the Evil Stepmother and stepsisters should’ve been connected to Salem and gotten Cinder involved and I totally agree with this. I then started envisioning a world where the step sisters competed with Cinder and all three of them were raised in Salem’s circle. In this version of things, I could totally picture one of the step sisters having a romantic tension driven connection with Watts and the two of them subtly flirting sometimes (and bonding over their mutual hatred of Cinder.) I picked the sister with bangs for no real reason except that I like her look more.

My three least favorite ships for the character

Watts/Cinder. Watts thinks of her like a bratty little girl, and Cinder kills him. Watts/Lionheart. Kinda really hate this one because of how clearly Lionheart was terrified of him. Just a bit uncomfortable for me to see that in a relationship. Watts/Hero!Ironwood or Watts/HeroTurnedVillain/Ironwood. Sorry, but Ironwood in canon got such a bad, bad portrayal in season 8 and the end of season 7, and I just can’t help but blame Watts for quite a bit of it. I only like them as a ship if Ironwood is an antagonist from the start.

My biggest criticism for the character

They shouldn’t have killed him! He was one of Salem’s best followers and one of the best villains and it was such a big mistake to kill literally one of the only actual loyal followers. It threw off any character development for Cinder and it was a big mistake. I really wanted the Cinder / Watts / Neo team up to keep going! I’m so disappointed it got thrown away.

My favorite thing about the character

Watts is an entitled, petty bastard, and I think that’s so good for a villain that isn’t meant to be social commentary (because tbh, RWBY never should’ve tried to be social commentary.) Watts isn’t sympathetic, he’s an Atlas born and raised guy in a three piece suit, he’s posh, he’s upset because he wasn’t given exactly what he wanted. Most of the villains in RWBY are either victims of abuse, systemic oppression, or poverty, and that’s... Not fun in a show that’s never handled social commentary well and is about magical girls destroying Voldemort/Satan with the power of friendship (Ruby literally never says anything about Faunus rights iirc.) Watts is refreshing because he’s exactly the type of villain that you can expect in a show like what RWBY should’ve been, and he flourishes as that. Why would we be sympathetic to Watts when he’s just doing this all because he wasn’t picked first for his tech? Why would we feel soured towards conflicts with Watts and Team RWBY? He’s just a petty bastard being evil because he was snubbed. Why would we be frustrated that incredibly significant problems are being shoved to the side with Watts? He’s a fun villain, he’s not meant to be more, he’s not meant to make you emotionally invested only to then be gutted for it. You can hate to love him without it feeling bad. Maybe that’s why he’s just my favorite non-kid villain (other than Roman.)

A headcanon I have about them

Watts has been trying to build his own AI robot like Penny, in his spare time. He wanted it to be done in time to become a Maiden, but it wasn’t, and Salem gave that slot to Cinder and got after Watts for not contributing enough. He of course thought this was deeply unfair (especially after being made to contribute a lot to Cinder’s Beacon success without getting any credit for it.) And this just fueled his hatred of Cinder, his hatred of Pietro and Ironwood, and by extension, his hatred of Penny.

What I would change about them if I was making a re-write

I would keep him freaking alive and keep up the pair up he had going on with Cinder and Neo! But also I’d increase his relationships with Emerald, Mercury, Tyrian, Hazel... Just some more Salem’s Inner Circle moments to flesh out their characters. Other than that, I wouldn’t change much. He’s a pretty good character.

What I I think of their character allusion and what (if anything) I would change about it

Okay, I’ve talked about his character allusion in a very long post awhile ago, but I’m not scrolling down that far to tag it. To sum it up... I hate his allusion. XD I loved the Sherlock Holmes books and read most of them, and I didn’t realize he was supposed to allude to John Watson until I read someone else’s post saying so, and I started freaking out about how awful it was. Watts has so little in common with Watson, he’s essentially the anti-Watson. Which basically means he’s Sherlock Holmes, the opposite of Watson in almost every way, up to and including freaking faking his death which is one of the most iconic Sherlock Holmes thing ever. Watts is everything Sherlock Holmes is on his worst days, arrogant, callous, consumed with his projects, petty, smug, over the top - as well as being hyper intelligent and a genius who often just gets passed over. He has rivalries with his colleagues like Holmes did. And like I said, he faked his death, only to reveal himself to an old friend later on the cusp of carrying out a scheme. He’s evil Holmes! He has nothing to do with John Watson - caring, humble, down to earth, not brilliant like his friend but content to be ordinary and special because of his emotional depth and devoted heart, medical former doctor who spends quite a lot of time chronicling the successes of someone else because he’s content to live in the background. Don’t get me wrong, a ‘Watson’ character who is evil could work - Watson himself indulged in crime for the sake of Holmes sometimes in the original works and if he worshipped Salem or one of her followers and did everything for her while still being a more humble, more friendly, not brilliant person he could be good - but Watts is not that person. Even the gimmicks Watts is given are stupid and don’t make it obvious he’s Watson. Boy’s got a moustache and a revolver and they thought that’d be enough. Idk why they thought 'we’ll make him Watson’ when he’s clearly a Holmes! Also, he’s supposed to be ‘Watson if he’d met Moriarty instead of Holmes,’ and to that I say boo! Watson wouldn’t turn into a super genius just because he meets a different mastermind!

...That’s summing up my feelings, yeah. Because I have so many feelings about his warped, weird character allusion. If I was changing it, I’d just make him Holmes like I think he was clearly supposed to be.

RWBY LiveThoughts: Episodes 8 and 9

So I missed last weeks episode since I got busy with stuff (school mostly, basic bitch busy day and all) so here’s two for one.

Gotta say, Im interested to see where this is going...

So something I missed the last few episodes; the final shot of the opening has the words “happily ever after” turn into “happy never again”, which I am both trepitided by and also intruged.

Cut to the jail cell AGAIN...Schnee’s looking a bit ansty. Boi probably thought he was getting out sooner. Suck it mate, your lawyers are DEAD.

Convinent blast of fire is convinenet...knocks out the cell doors and punches a hole but thats it. My money’s on Cinder

Honestly that animation seems oddly...flat. Like they just did the bare minimum...the ship breaks cleanly too. ~12 or so bits in between its nose and tail section. Kinda reminds me of how the UNSC Savannah blows up after suffering a reactor breach in Halo Reach’s “Long Night of Solace” mission.

Also this episode has been making excessive use of sweat drops. Did they get that figured out or what

The Grimm arm that results looks like Cinders. Intentional, Im compleretly sure. Also the fact theres bone underneath proves to me more what I thought. Its just a host.

However the fact that the bones have TWISTED and resulted in the Hounds form is...interesting. Unless those were there first (and they seem to be as they last past the Hound vanishing)...was that a secondary feature? He had the ears...
