How many pounds do you want to lose? quite a bit. i don’t wna put a number on it, i’ll just judge it from what i look like physically. Checking with the Fam

I’m back from a weekend trip home to Dallas. It was really fun. But I’m so tired. I realized so much when I got home. My mother is doing very well. The only thing is that my mother is greatly reserved in demeanor and very conservative in what she is willing to do, what she says, etc. I grew up under strict rules, because my family ranges from mildly to greatly religious and mildly conservative. With all that said, my mother met me at the airport and did not seem herself to me. She was really bouncy and just different. It was hard to describe. Maybe it is because I’m not around much and she was excited to see me. Maybe it’s because she turned 50 in March and does not feel like it. I could quite put my finger on it, but she was different. Although she did comment on my hair, saying that it seriously need to be cut. Since the trip was so short, she could not “drag” me to get it lopped off. But her cousins were saying that the mini-fro was fine and the pick (which I often do in relaxed settings) was fine, too. She didn’t cared; she continuously voiced her disapproval. I got to see my grandmother. It’s funny. She always has been the one when I was little to emphasize that I was a big guy, but if I tried to eat less she would call me out and encourage me to eat more. Anyway, I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and actually look slimmer since I’ve been back home. (I’ve slimmed somewhat in the past year; I buy new clothes only so that months later they become too big). So, she is happy that I am slim. She says, “Oh, you’re going to be slim and handsome and a scientist.” Many of her sisters (my aunts) hinted at the same thing. That means, soon my relatives will ask me about (sighs) girls. “Have you found a girl yet?” If I do find a girl, then no worries. But if I find a guy.......... Now, they’re only interested in me continuing my education. Since I’ve slimmed pretty well, my grandmother tried to give me more food and told me to stop wearing baggy clothes (the new but too big clothes). What else? I went to my uncle and aunt’s farm Sunday for a BBQ. This is my mother’s sister, who I am close to. It was fun. It was not too hot, which is great because Texas can really be hot. I spent Sunday really helping. I had to clean coolers, chop food, and tend to the grill. I didn’t mind. Then, people started coming. Forgive me, I mean I love my family to death and would not trade them for anything, but I don’t like answering the same questions over and over again. I understand, especially since I don’t get to see them often, but I don’t ever really like answering questions. I think it just stems from the fact that I don’t like talking about myself. I’d rather talk about other things. I saw many of my cousins. It’s cool. We don’t really talk much. Not like we used to. We used to be a bit closer. But I noticed how we've become different lately. For instance, we can't talk about music. They listen to hip hop, particularly Southern hip hop; I listen to everything but. I do more movies and reading. Only TV on DVD (until I get the cable) and Tavis and NPR. I actually indulged and ate. I ate carbs (fried corn, potato chips, and potato salad). I ate bread on my hamburgers and hot links. I ate chess pie, peach cobbler with ice cream. Unfortunately, I missed the cheesecake. I didn’t feel guilty; I came back to Philly, and have not touched carbs or sweets since. I’ve indulged and moved on. It’s so cool. I have self-control. We played dominoes. Man, I missed the noise talking and the bragging rights. We played volleyball. I love when my female cousins are clumsy around the ball. I laugh. It’s great. Then, we had our own fireworks show and the picnic ended at 12 or 1, like all holidays end. It’s funny. Every time, my family gets together. There’s some sort of controversy, particularly about food being packed off. I just laugh. But this time, something more had passed over my head (like everything does). As I was talking to my mom on the way to the airport, she confided in me about how some people (who’ve married into our family) don’t like these family get-togethers or think that our family is a little too country or beneath them or something. And it frustrates me, because our family get-togethers are so great. It’s the only time I really get to see my cousins now. And visit and talk. I remember how my family has been so supportive of me. I remember certain events at school where my family would show up to support me, even against my wishes. I would always feel embarrassed, I would get upset with them, only to have some people at school comment how they wished their family were supportive like mine, and then I’d feel guilty. I guess for me, I’m not close to my father and his family, and my mother’s father died two years before I was born, so my mother’s mother’s family is the closest family I have. It’s huge and loving. It’s the only place where I know I’m loved. And I feel blessed. So hearing concerns that family get-togethers may not come into fruition because of the sentiments above bothers me. These are the only traditions I have and I don’t want them to expire.
