he is so certain about who he is ("i can only be me" "well? this is me!") but everything about him is fake. every mask he shows is an exaggeration of himself. the pleasant prince exists within him yet he claims it is entirely fake and that he is a violent murderer, but that's not his ENTIRE self. for a fact. robin is a manifestation of his true self as well as loki is. the snarling monster is just as real as the just superhero. he wants nothing to do with true justice because he can't believe in it, can't believe in the system that let his mother die and harmed him all his life, a system he can so easily abuse to gain empty love now, to watch his wretched father use for his own gain. yet, throughout his entire life, he followed his own justice, he may not embody what society deems as justice but he does embody that arcana - his goal, at the end of the day, if you really look at it, was to harm those who harm others. does that not sound like something robin hood would do? most people he killed were corrupt or distorted in some way - after all, they all had a shadow in mementos or even an entire palace (also, other than wakaba, as far as we know they were all powerful or influential people like politicians or businessmen. hard to NOT get corrupted like that). doesn't that make him a rightful phantom thief as well? going against what society deems right, taking justice and the law into his own hands, harming people in positions of power so they stop harming others. this is why he could even awaken to a persona in the first place, after all. his rebellion burns so bright that during the third semester he does the best job getting joker back into reality and pushing him to rebel again, to make things right, to not sit in comfort and let everyone's true selves get erased for fake happiness. it's all thanks to him clinging to his true self, even if only in his subconscious, even when he won't admit it to himself. he adorns his masks but his true self won't change. because he is so certain about who he is. i can only be me, so.
