OK, so when you download a torrent, you are downloading some files. The BitTorrent protocol makes it almost impossible to substitute a different file than the one you request, but you have no way to be absolutely certain that the original file is 'safe' - that depends on the properties of the file, and what you do with it. Some types of file are safer than others.

Here's some jargon you may find useful.

torrent: a file that describes how to download some files through the BitTorrent protocol. we won't go into the technicalities, but when you load a torrent into your torrent client, you will connect to other people who have parts of the files, download the pieces, and reassemble the files you want.

seeding: providing a copy of the files in a torrent to other people.

ISP: Internet Service Provider, the company that connects you to the internet.

IP address: your computer's identity on a network, notably the public internet. When you connect to a website, they know your IP address. Your IP address is assigned by your ISP.

From an IP address, you can determine someone's broad geographical location (which country they're connected in) and which ISP they are using. You can contact the ISP, who will be able to associate it with a specific user.

swarm: the collection of users downloading or seeding a particular torrent.

VPN: Virtual Private Network, a relay service which hides your IP address from the public internet. People who connect to you will see the VPN's IP instead of your real IP. Your ISP will be able to know that you connected to a VPN, but not what you send through it. So they wouldn't be able to tell if you are using BitTorrent. VPNs usually cost a fairly small amount of money as a subscription service.

Threat model

In security we talk about a 'threat model', which is what you think you need to protect yourself from. There are two major threats when downloading files using BitTorrent.

copyright claims: your computer's IP is broadcast when you use BitTorrent. Copyright holders will often put 'sniffers' on the network which will monitor the IPs in the swarm of popular torrents. They will then send a takedown letter to your internet service provider (ISP), who will usually send you an email to stop sharing copyrighted media on their network, and then cut off your internet on multiple offences. This can easily be circumvented using a VPN. I strongly recommend using a VPN if you download any copyrighted content through BitTorrent.

attacks through the file you download: someone might upload a virus as a torrent, presenting it as a file you might be looking for (e.g. cracked software). So let's go over different types of file you might download and how they could be used to attack you.

Executable files, such as pirated software, are not safe. If you download a program and run it, you are potentially giving the author full control over your computer. So you should make damn sure the uploader is trustworthy. If you're downloading open source software from the maintainer's github release page, you're probably good. If you're downloading cracked art programs or games... good luck lol.

On a public torrent tracker, to which anyone can upload, there is no guarantee that any file is what anyone says. You have to make your own determination of which uploaders are trustworthy. I can't give you great advice on this, since I generally do not download cracked executables. For games, FitGirl Repacks is generally a pretty good source.

If you are on Windows, the default Windows Defender software should be used to scan any file you download. (Paid antivirus software is of somewhat dubious utility, often pushing ads and using CPU resources in its own right.) Fewer attackers will target desktop Linux or OSX, which doesn't mean you're guaranteed safe, but Windows is the biggest target as the most widely used operating system.

Videos, music and images are generally safe. I say 'generally' because it's possible, in theory, to create a video that exploits a vulnerability in your video player (e.g. mpv or VLC) and uses it to execute code. So far as I know this is largely theoretical, and known vulns have been patched, but make sure to keep your player up to date to mitigate against known vulnerabilities.

Any compressed archives (zip, rar, 7zip) can be used to create something called a 'zip bomb', which is a file which goes into an infinite loop when you try to decompress it, swallowing up more and more memory and hard drive space. I've never seen this actually be done, but it's possible. More subtle attacks would attempt to attack the program you use to decompress the file. Keep your software up to date to mitigate against known vulnerabilities.

Besides taking care about what you download, on Windows you should either not run your main account as an admin account, or make sure to set User Account Control to require a credentials check for admin operations, and also keep your operating system and software up to date. Make sure file extensions are visible so you don't get fooled by a file disguised as a different file type. And y'know, if the torrent tracker has comments, check to see if a lot of people are saying it's a virus.

What could happen if your computer gets infected? Well, they might use your computer to mine crypto at the cost of your CPU performance, they might encrypt and ransom your files, and they might steal your credentials for online services (including banking and the like). There are various measures you can take against this, such as making sure to encrypt sensitive data such as passwords, but the best defense is to not infect your computer in the first place.

The most likely time for people to upload viruses is when something is in high demand and there isn't a single authoritative high-quality source out yet.

Ultimately you get to decide what you consider an acceptable level of risk. There is no such thing as perfect safety. I would recommend using your own initiative to learn about computer security and not badger random tumblr users to explain it to you, but hopefully the above guidelines should help you avoid doing anything too dangerous.

I love your work, but please, you have 400+ patrons, it's time to leave TSR. It's not safe to download from there without ad blocking, so now that they block downloads when adblock is detected it's not possible for simmers to get most of your work unless they can pay.

I debated even answering this, but I figured I would in case anyone else felt the same. Let's begin my typical, novel-length response.

TSR is completely safe to download from and saying otherwise is false. The ads may be annoying, but it is far from ad.fly etc where your computer is at risk of getting malware and viruses. On top of that, the admins at TSR individually check and in-game test uploads to verify they meets strict standards. This ensures you, the downloader, can confidently download CC knowing that your gaming performance and computer memory won't be negatively impacted. So if anything, you are much safer downloading from TSR than anywhere else.

You can absolutely get all of my CC for free. If you don't want to see the ads, it is only $4 a month for the VIP membership which removes the ads in addition to other benefits. The very small team that admins the site work incredibly hard and care very much about the community. Their effort, which again includes checking uploads to keep downloaders safe, is their full time job and isn't free. In addition, TSR is the only site that directly compensates artists for their CC. The Question on Everyone’s Mind

“Hey you haven’t updated No Stars over Uptown in almost a year...”

Hmm, I hate it when you’re right. (This section has been rewritten ad-nauseam to curb back the bitchiness by the way)

So back in early/mid 2018, the idea was to divorce Uptown from a person who influenced it (and myself) heavily. She was my most important audience member, the closest friend I ever had, and unfortunately someone who used her power to bully, ostracize, and hurt others with my help. I cut contact when the hurt + some self-awareness finally reached me. Apologies were made and I feel like my work will never be done with it, but there was still Uptown.

Between censored comments, entirely recasting Axel’s save, different plot threads, and a load of disclaimers, there was nothing that would scrub her influence from the story. There was no way to cleanly drop everything because of how deep her influence went. It disgusted me to look back at it, and I had to private the blog because I feared what it endorsed, even if just in the past.

I pulled back from that sims writing community. I had its main thread on the Official Forums removed too (I guess if that was a mystery to anyone). It was a surrender that I never wanted to do, but I had it in my mind that if I was gone, then she wouldn’t be there either. Uptown became this cursed item, and as I quietly retired it, I noticed that she went quieter too. Not gone, but enough to make me sleep easier at night and even occasionally say hello to old friends.

And I hope deep in my heart that no one else is getting hurt in my place, but now this is gonna haunt me all day huh!

The two paths forward...

1) Complete Uptown rewrite that I’ve been threatening everyone with all year. While it won’t ever be clean because I can’t undo time, I do have a sound outline for a story that is much more true to my actual vision and how I’ve evolved, with a few necessary boundaries in place that are going to be there for all stories moving forward: no more casting calls and no more collaborative efforts. I am not going to open myself up to this happening again, even if the people have changed.

2) Same as above, but I continue the original Uptown as a favor to loyal readers alongside the rewrite. I would try to put the effort into it that I initially did, but with no promises on an update schedule and no advertising. I did ask myself “is there Patreon but without pledging money, just the private posts function” but it could operate as part of a private forum, a members-only part of a website, etc.

Also readers of the original would be beholden to a rule of “don’t spoil the rewrite for new readers, c’mon guys”. I mean, not really, but it is a good courtesy to extend to people.

Priority on this isn’t high but you at least will see what is!

I will probably make the blog public again either way due to the many broken links on my Tumblr but we’ll see. There are other things to deal with as I shall list!

Outrun the Scythe is a Sims 3-based tale of a young gay man and his zombie grandma, as they are both offered separate roles of being the undying intermediaries between the world of humans and the influence of a race of space daemons. It’s pretty familiar if you’ve been following me pre-Uptown, taking some cues from stories I’ve kept under lock and key like Eight Cicadas, The Chains of Lyra, and the not-so-locked-up Ironstar Immortals (of which Outrun is just the direct sequel to sans any retconning...ah the smell of early 2013 and performative heterosexuality)

Ah, back to my roots.

It’s a hybrid of gameplay, story, and lore about my little race of daemons with a lot of my own idiosyncrasies that I’m not really ashamed of: basing it off a super-polarizing Sims 3 challenge from a site I moderate, using a lot of EA’s pre-made townies and their genes, lots of unnecessary posemaking, stupid references. It’s a comfort to have in my roster.

While the first few chapters are in the middle of revision, I have around six in the queue and will be making this public when I have ten. I’m guessing December then?

Undocumented Black Widow Challenge: I just did this for fun/forum kudos (yes, in fact I have joined many forums), there was going to be a short story but it was quickly becoming something against my code of ethics. I mean, sims die and all. (read: I had to choose between “heterosexual widow” and “widow with some same-sex marriages that still end in tragedy, reinforcing negative stereotypes to the public for the sake of me not getting bored and detached during gameplay” so there were no good choices. Except for her affair with the mailwoman, 10/10) I hope to finish this before October ends and get my medal on Boolprop, I’m pretty far through it all. I might upload the sims involved anyways. This is for TS4.

Untitled “Dear Diary” Challenge: Tired of feeling left out of the fun on the Boolprop forums, their “Dear Diary” challenge was the one that appealed to me the most on first glance. Why? I guess I could have included “spending time on Boolprop with old and new friends” in where my life has been. It’s a nice lil community if also a place with its own idiosyncrasies as well. Defunded or Forgotten?: Oh shit I actually released stuff in 2020 and told no one? I wasn’t a good enough Christian because I had this secret sin I was too ashamed to mention to anyone. I wasn’t a good enough Christian because I didn’t read my Bible every day, I didn’t pray enough, I wasted so much time. 

I made resolutions at the beginning of both 2018 and 2019 - I would stop reading these stories. I would stop this sin. But I failed, both years. I failed and I fell back into sin. 

I knew all the things I should. I learned all the theory, all the theology. And yes, I believed it, but I took pride in that. I knew all the answers to questions, I was so much more mature in my faith than other people. But I still didn’t feel good enough. Today, in church, I realized. I’m not good enough. I’m not good enough to beat this sin. I’m not good enough to save myself. But Jesus saved me anyway. Because I’m not good enough, He gave his life for me. And yeah, I know this. I’ve known this for years, for my whole life. But it just seemed to hit me today. 

2019 was a good year for me. I learned a lot about my faith, deepened my understanding of theology. This year I’m going to live it. I’m going to stop worrying about what I do and focus on who I am. On who I belong to. 

And honestly? It’s already making me want to read my Bible more. This attitude is allowing me to sit back and say “yes. I have this sin. I have this problem I cannot face on my own. It’s not okay to live in this sin, but I’m not alone in having a secret sin. I’m still loved. I’m still saved. I’m still God’s beloved daughter.” 

I’m still not sure if I’m ready to fully admit it. The idea of telling my parents what I’ve been doing for the last six years fills me with so much shame and fear. Even writing this post was hard, because I’ve never really told anyone this. But putting it out there, saying that I have this problem and that I don’t want to have it anymore, it’s a step. It’s admitting to myself that I can’t do this alone, I guess.

The Book of Failures: Death Game

 Despite making over 20 games (there's too many to count, really), I have never released a postmortem. It's time for that to change. I hope you can learn from my experience, and avoid my mistakes. If you’re looking for hard data, it’s at the bottom.

Before we begin, there's one thing it's important you understand. I knew Death Game would not be a financial success. The odds of me, an unknown dev, with little renown, and no usable industry contacts, breaking even on even the smallest game is next to impossible.

But I had some ideas on how to mitigate these problems. First, I was going to become a scavenger, scrounging up sales anyway I could. The big thing, I knew, was game bundles. Without being a success, I was unlikely to get a response from a big reseller like Humble Bundle (Yes, I have emailed them multiple times, and never even received a response. I even know one of the founders, which did not help.). So I intended to target smaller sellers, like IndieGala.

But to resell keys, I needed to be on steam. Steam, at the time, had just begun Steam Direct. Larger developers could release at any time for no price, but for someone like me? I needed a license, costing $100 USD. $100 is a hard number to match in profit for me. Another difficulty to overcome.

Death Game was a game I made from the HON Game Jam (that’s its own story) in two days. I thought it was a good candidate to see if making a commercial game was something that was even possible for someone like me. But it needed a lot more work before I would be happy releasing it.

Death Game took two months for me to make, and released both as a free version and a paid version. But.. to my knowledge, no one ever downloaded the free version, including looking at my analytics. Such is life at the bottom. Death Game (free) received about 30 views over its lifetime. Including the gamejam version, it received 131 views and 51 downloads, meaning I had a conversion rate of 38.93%. This isn’t bad for a free game, but I’ve had other projects that fared much better.

Of that two month development, one month was largely working on steamworks integration. I had never launched a game on steam before, so it took much longer than usual. The game launched on April 19th, 2018. I determined this launch date by obsessing over the “upcoming releases” on Steam, and picking the day which had the least releases, and that had no AAA titles coming out. I can’t compete with AAA, even pretend, so I didn’t try to. This day was inconvenient for me. I ended up staying up all night to click the release button on time, and pretty much immediately took a nap once it was done.

I actually ran a twitter ad for the game, and had pretty decent results from it! I also passively promoted the game by posting it in several discords I was part of, automating twitter posts at peak (and off-peak) times, and posting on other sites I knew had high engagement from prior experiences. The results were overwhelming for me. When I awoke, most of my friends were still talking about the game. Some of them were currently in the process of making levels to share!

...Unfortunately, that experience didn’t last. To this day, I am the only one who has released a custom level for my game. It’s an easy experience, you just need to upload a 5kb or so file that you can create in the game. I got the distinct impression many of my friends didn’t enjoy the game. And that’s okay.

I had given steam keys of the game to some close friends, and they played it and agreed to review it on steam. Of the 10 I sent it to, 3 people reviewed it. One friend, a fellow developer reviewed it on day one, hour one. Another, a friend/fan I’ve known for a long time, warned me that if he were to review it, he’d review it negatively. This was upsetting.. But I told him that I’d rather he review it honestly than to censor his thoughts. He wrote his review on day one as well. The last reviewer, and close friend I’ve known for over 6 years.. reviewed it... 9 months later.

Unfortunately, steam had updated the storefront to essentially ignore reviews from steam keys, essentially meaning I had no reviews. Additionally, the negative review I received was displayed prominently, and was weighed higher than the others, causing my game to have a near permanent negative review percentage. This bombed my analytics, and to this day I have brought more traffic to my steam page than steam has. More on that later.

I had done my research, and knew it was time to check my email next. Anytime you release a game on steam, you will receive a large amount of emails, about any number of things. Business offers, promotions, key scammers, or fans. Obviously, I mostly got business offers and key scammers. Of the business offers, one was promising, and fit my needs. about 80% of the emails I received were people impersonating inactive streamers and trying to get steam keys for the game. I sent steam keys to some of the more reasonable ones, and ignored the rest.

The business offer was from a game bundle company, called GoGoBundle. They did bundles of cheap, disposable games for pennies on the dollar. As an example, you could get 23 games for about € 1.23 for all of them combined. This company did not seem the most... reputable, but I did my research and determined that they’d work.

In total, I did two bundles with them, and the amount I’d get back decreased each time. for the first, I received $113.59 through paypal. The second, $50.87. They contacted me about doing a third bundle, and then stopped returning my emails. This was particularly annoying as we had signed a contract requiring them to return any unused steam keys to me, which they never did. On Steam, I made $90 USD, but with taking Steam’s cut out, it was more like $70 USD. Since Steam requires at least $100 to send out a payment, I still have not received any money from steam.

In total, I made $234.46 USD from death game. This is barely over my costs to put it on steam, and values two months of work, and an additional two weeks later for updates, at $134.46 . If I was actually intending to pay my bills with this game, I would be homeless and starving. Thankfully, I made the obvious decision not to quit my day job. (Well, quit permanently, at least.). If we count my bills, I spend $600 total over the two months to make the game, plus the $100 to put it on steam. Effectively, Death Game cost me 465.54 to make. But hey, at least I can say I have a game on steam now.

Now, on to the data:

Over Death Game+’s lifetime, I had 900, 698 impressions, which basically means an icon for my game popped up in someone’s feed that many times. Of those impressions, I had a clickthrough rate of 6.87%, or just under 62,000 clicks. Of those 62,000, 42,000 came from external websites, meaning not steam. To summarize a lot of data, I, a solo dev with no resources, brought in more traffic to my page than Steam, a multibillion company did. And I paid them $100 to do it.

So, in short, here’s what I learned:

-Whatever reach I have, it isn’t enough.

-If I am going to be able to consistently make games, I would need to make one a month at this level of success to stay alive.

-Steam key reviews are effectively worthless, unless they’re negative.

-That bundle company you worked with? Yeah, they’re going to be defunct by the time you release your next game.

-Outside deals are more reliable than steam sales.

-It’s okay to use outside sources for you assets, like music. If you don’t, you’re just raising the money you need to break even.
