Saturday, June 8th,
7:18am: Reasons I'm upset: I'm tired, I had a bad dream, I actually have a headache and a sore throat, my whole body is tired, my neck hurts, my eyes hurt. I stayed up really late finishing my work and yesterday was too long. Now I have day- jet lag. I'm extremely fucking dehydrated. I have to work so fucking much.
Hello I'm stressed out no wonder I'm doing the self pity guilt regret loop. Hiiii it's me reality check, you're not upset about being single you're upset about this other shit bro!! Physical health is NOT well atm.
Reasons to be happy: I got my onboarding done! My check is going to be FAT. I work at a grocery store I can have all the drinks during my shift. I'm going to a concert tonight! Tomorrow will be fun! My internship is going well! Work is relatively easy! I'm single and very ready to mingle! My illness could be worse!

[ALL UNITS CONVERTED TO LOCAL UNITS]
9:22 AM - Location Systems Offline
Alarms are blaring, everyoneâs running around the ship frantically, and I lost Bella. I think she's on deck 504, but thatâs a lot of area to search when the shipâs falling out of the sky. Man, I should not be making a log now. Ugh, I gotta find her soon...
BELLA! Oh, thank goodness youâre ok!
*intense rumble*
#ALERT# #ALERT# #ATMOSPHERIC ENTRY DETECTED#
Ok, we found each other- now letâs get to a pod.

9:22 PM - Xenobiology Lab 37
Ugh, I definitely want to work in engineering instead of botany. Tomorrow Iâll try and set up an internship down there.
Hey, thatâs ok. You donât need to like the first thing you try.
I guess so. *yawns* ok, Iâm kinda done for today. Want to head back to the quarters?
Yea, definitely.
10:41 PM - Quarters
I know we've been here for a few weeks now, but I still can't belive I'm working onboard the Puer Magnus, like, the biggest ship humanity has ever made- and I'm on it!
Honestly? Same. I mean, I know they were basically accepting anyone by the end but it's still so cool. Although I wasn't expecting us to head so far from Alliance space so fast.
Fair, and same. It is cool exploring deep space- especially in xenobiology. Speaking of biology, I need to cancel my biology internship and set something up with engineering. Xenobio is cool, but not quite my cup of tea.
Makes sense, but I'll stick with bio.
Fair.
*light shake*
#This is Captain Dux, we have a small energy drain in engineering, and we are asking for a temporary suspension of non-essential high-energy work.#
Hey, I can probably help with that tomorrow- but that's for another day. Talk to you tomorrow.
We live in the same room, remember?
Right, heh.
Good night.

Computer, lift to Engineering.
*ding*
Well, that was fast.
9:02 AM - Main Engineering
Ok, make this quick- we're a bit busy here.
Worked in xenobio, now I want to help in engineering.
Great, we need help. Get over to that station over there.
Wha- that's it?
Yeah. Major power drain problems across the boa-

Hello! 7/25/2023
Hello! I'm Annalise Sunderland. I'm currently working to complete my Ph.D. Today I complete onboarding to join the internship program at the SCP Foundation!
As part of the mandatory psych eval, Dr. Glass suggested I start documenting my experience in the form of a blog. He said that the majority of interns "experience psychological hardship" and writing it out can help. So, I guess for the duration of my time here I'll be updating almost every day!
I'll be working in the Division of Training and Development under the department head, Dr. Alto Clef. A lot of the researchers kept giving me looks during orientation, so I guess he's a hard-ass or something.
I'll be working out of Site-17; even though a lot of the training I'll be working on is for Site-19. I, however, am disabled so for safety reasons, I'm staying at a safer site. Hope you all like my icon. thought it was fitting! I use a wheelchair on my bad days and a cane or walker on my good ones.
I guess that's it for now. It's technically tomorrow already and I start my assignment tomorrow so I should sleep some. I'll be meeting the department head tomorrow too. I guess I'll update then. Bye!

Highlighting and annotating my readings for HST-331! Iâm really happy to have this reading because for the last two weeks, Iâve been learning the exact same thing in my Colonial America class and my Politics in Latin America class, so Iâm glad the two are starting to diverge.
EC-102: Read Ch. 3
HST-331: Read + Annotated 3 readings
HST-331: Discussion Prep
Onboarding for Internship Part 2
Officer Meeting for 1 ClubÂ
I also made it to both my classes today and took some pretty good notes in both. I also starting working some more on my HST-297 topic, which is going to be something with British Punk Rock in the 70s-80s. I was searching through archives to find self-published fan magazines (fanzines). I would love to do something with those, but theyâre hard to find. Iâll learn some more tomorrow, and hopefully be a little more productive than I was today.Â

My Curatorial Internship at MSI Part 2
In a very bittersweet conclusion, I finished my internship this past Thursday. It culminated in a visit Friday, August 6th with my family and friends getting a VIP tour of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago. My younger brother and his Australian co-worker flew in from D.C. and we picked them up from OâHare on the way to MSI. We met with Director Kathleen McCarthy first thing after getting and to my utter disbelief got us onboard U-505 as a thank you for all my help this summer. She then let me run the tour onboard a German U-Boat... I am still feeling beyond honored for a privilege like that. She then let me give the tour of Collections and it really brought my short time with MSI full circle. I was asked to continue working on a project regarding a âReichkriegsflaggeâ flag someone emailed us that they believe is linked to U-505. So as you can imagine I am thrilled... I broke down the history we have on the flags MSI has in storage and on exhibit. I emailed no fewer than four separate institutions; the German Maritime Museum, the US Naval Academy Museum (who has U-505â˛s actual War flag it was flying when captured in 1944), the Smithsonian, and to Keith Gill who was the chief Curator of U-505 when it was restored and interred in itâs final resting place within the 37 million dollar McCormick Foundation Exhibit.
What will follow is Weeks 7 - 9:
Week 7: 7/19-22/2021
Monday: I was not feeling well and decided to email Voula at 8AM as I got back home from the train station. I am glad I made this decision because I had a stomach that was in knots and there was plenty of material to work on from home. I worked on the U-505 artifacts list.
Tuesday: I came into the office and had my normal weekly meeting with Voula at 10 AM. We discussed the past week and the week ahead. Fortuitously since I had finished the massive transcription I was available to help on a more pressing issue that came up. The U.S. Navy was coming to give inert certificates and certify any munitions we had that still needed them. This was great because it was an opportunity to work with the Registrar Deanna, and do registration/collections management work. I got half way through the huge U.S. Navy loan files. I will continue next week in office, as tomorrow I am not working but will be on location.
Wednesday: I am not working Wednesday, as I am taking a long time friend and his family from my organization, the 501st Legion downtown. I will hopefully get to show them what I do in Collections; my office, the staff who are in my department and a brief walk through storage. I can't wait to see their faces... they have been following the posts I have been making to share my excitement of this incredible opportunity. The visit went well, and the parents Neil and Andrea are big World's Fair fans (both Colombian Exposition and 1933 Century of Progress.) They were former patron members of MSI before COVID.
Thursday: Working from home I was tasked with making a list of the artifacts on exhibition from the transcription of the U505 exhibit. So taking out the artifacts and making it into a separate word doc that I am sure helps the team when needing quick reference to what is on the floor.
Saturday: I continued the work from the U505 artifacts list and now am porting it to a excel workbook which seems to be the preferred file extension used by Kathleen and Voula (and perhaps Collections in general). Not strenuous academic work (since I already did that) but a lot busy work plugging, copying, pasting, etc.
Week 8: 7/26-29/2021
Monday: I came into the office today and resumed my work on going through the large U.S. Navy loan folders Deanna gave me in a effort to find relevant materials on the German, and American torpedoes as well as a Soviet Cruise Guided Missile, the "STYX." I gathered all my materials and presented them to her, and she looked through and helped me reduce the gathered documents for the most relevant to inertion. I found an actual donation file for the STYX to MSI from the Navy... not everyday you find a piece of paper saying this million dollar, surface to ship missile from the Cold War. This took me to the end of the day.
Tuesday: I came into the office and had my weekly meeting with Voula. This would be our last in person meeting as she is going to Greece with her family this Friday. I made sure to really emphasize how much this opportunity meant to me and that I was going to go the extra mile to wrap up all my projects and try to be as much use to MSI as possible. I had finishing helping Deanna yesterday with the inert reference materials to help her with the U.S. Navy guys coming in next Monday.
Wednesday: I worked from home since I have no shortage of stuff to work on. Voula tasked me with writing labels for the Fire Fighting artifacts I that I made a long project of at the beginning of the internship. Since I created all that in a long, well organized word doc, I can then, like a professional curator, work from my research to create 1-2 sentence labels for each item. I will take that and then input it into a excel workbook which seems to be the preferred file extension for reference purposes.
Thursday: We had another MSI Zoom round-table, and this time we how to brand, and what branding means professionally speaking, and to Museums like MSI specifically. Thankfully being Zoom was able to attend while working from home, which is an absolute godsend (in regards to not having to commute to Chicago, from Wauconda, IL... not that I don't like being at MSI- the commute is long.) I continued buttoning up and polishing all that I worked on so far. This isn't the normal college assignment where I don't re-read it once and make quick improvements (being honest here!) I re-read them about 3 times each, as I am very proud of what little I can contribute to MSI.
Week 9: 8/2-5/2021
Monday: I worked from home buttoning up and polishing all my work for MSI that I've done this summer in addition to finishing the label writing for the Fire Fighting artifacts list. I will port that into a Excel workbook like the U505 artifacts list, just to be consistent (as providing a word doc copy as well.) Long day in front of the computer... I worked roughly 10 hours. I just really want to leave a good, and lasting impression on MSI as a show of the supreme gratitude I have for them and this opportunity.
Tuesday: Today I came in feeling a little bit disappointed it is my last week, and endevour to take as much advantage of it as possible. With my Zoom meeting with Voula (who is in Greece right now) we discussed any last questions I had, and she wanted to say that she will be available as a reference and contact for me going forward which means the world over. Today is my day to talk, and work with the Registrar Deanna. She let me know my work on the Russian Cruise missile STYX was very helpful to the gentlemen from Navy doing the inert certifications. That felt really good. Kathleen also forwarded me a project involving one of the flags of U505! The very SAME one I took a photo with learning how to handle textile artifacts. I am over the moon, call it fate that I sought that flag out earlier. (As a former Combat Arms 11Bravo serviceman, holding the captured colors of an enemy combatant captured in combat is nothing short of incredible. So much so the words escape me. A significant emotional experience for me, personally.) We handled the additional two flags, both of which are the correct dimensions for being a port flag, meaning it was flown in dock, and around friendly waters when not on patrol. We handled both, and I took photos showing the measuring tape next to the artifacts to certify these are what they appear to be, the real McCoy. I will follow up with the author of a book about Hans Goebeler, one of the U505 sailors and find out more about this additional Reichskreigflagge he signed! To be entrusted to do this by Kathleen is very empowering. To help Deanna she had me scan all the Black Creativity Juried Art files from 2020 from artists. These were receipts of artwork we kept, or returned. The scanner allows you save files in it that are available to the department computers via wifi. If she has to pull a receipt on a artwork it is catalogued. Not the most exciting work, but work that needs doing. Glad I got to get a flavor of what it entails to be the registrar and put on a different hat, albeit a simple busy-work one for me to get a grasp at how her work differs from the curators.
Wednesday: I had to work from home this day because of issues with my car. Normally not an issue with the battery but with my dad being out of town for work I didn't have a back up vehicle. I still had plenty to work on to finish up.
Thursday: This is my last scheduled work day for the Curatorial internship at MSI. It is completely bittersweet, bitter that it is over, and sweet in the way that I have all these contacts and incredible experiences under my belt. I have a tour scheduled with Mike Welsh whose in charge of facilities, buildings and grounds. Additionally we will have the opportunity to do a in person round table with Chevy Humphrey, President and CEO of MSI. The day began with a little party/meeting hosted by Kathleen for the new assistant curator, registrar and preparator to help with the projects being undertaken by each position. We also celebrated my last day which was very nice. I got to help unpack a 3D photo studio that was massive, and will be a big help photographing these artifacts for cataloguing and being put online. The meeting with Chevy went well if a little underwhelming because I was the only one asking questions! But, hard to pass up a mostly 1:1 dialogue with the CEO and President of MSI. I came back to collections in which Kathleen presented me some gifts from MSI in appreciation of my help for the summer. What a grand and wonderful experience.
Friday: I took my Family, family friends Mike and Kathy, as well as my visiting younger brother the Assistant director of marketing and communications for Atlas Network in DC with his Australian co-worker Vale to see MSI from top to bottom. It began with Kathleen getting us ONBOARD U-505 and let me give the tour. I had never been so honored, and not to mention the onboard for the sub is temporarily closed for COVID. This meant the world, and it was so very cool to share this with my family. It's one thing to talk about a German U-Boat... it's another to be inside a REAL one. She then took us to Collections and again let me give the tour in Storage and was very generous with her time. I then took them to the Henry Crown Space Center, then into the Smart Home Park to grab a drink. I took them to the Science of Storms exhibit and then used the special staff elevator to speedily get me back to Collections to use my work laptop to do the final meeting with Studio Institute. I had to leave the meeting right near the end because we needed to get home and take care of our 14 year old dog Ziggy, and equally old visiting Griffin. It was great to share my presentation with the rest of the Chicago/Memphis interns. This was the first time Chicago was included on the program and I believe the stars aligned to put where I am today, and what I got to do this summer. Thank you. I will try to make an album on Tumblr of images of my internship this summer and I took them with a storytellerâs eye. Itâs a pretty cool linear progression of what I found over the course of the internship!

Before I start with my internship journey with WWF, Iâd like to explain why I first posted a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke. To me, my experience did not begin during my on-boarding day, but rather, when I Googled âdesign internships manila 2020â˛. Lo and behold, there were a lot of sites hosting job offerings. The internet truly is your friend in this time and age. Job hunting, I realized, was similar to online dating. You swipe until you find one that you think is a good match for you, and you just hope that it is. I let everything happen to me during my search, the beauty and the terror, and Iâm so glad that I was able to go around and experience what the creative industry has to offer.
Day 1!
March 2 was my onboarding day! My daily commute was really easy because we have a UV terminal near the house that goes straight to SM North Edsa. From there, I walk to work. I start my day with a sweet iced black coffee from McDo.Â
I was really early for work for my first day, so I had to wait for Ana (my supervisor) to arrive. She arrived at about 9AM, which was a bit of a norm around the office. Pam, the Comms head, introduced me to everyone, and Ana gave me my first assignment! March 3 was World Wildlife Day, so we had to make a pub for it. I decided to illustrate 3 of the animals that WWF highlights.
My on-boarding day was also Francesâ last day. She was the Visual Media Intern before me. Surprisingly, I had a lot of fun with them, despite it being my first day. It really felt like I belonged.Â
Day 2!
I was the first one in the office today! I did some of my schoolwork before the rest of my officemates came in. We had a comms team meeting at 9:00AM for the program revising. We ordered in breakfast from McDonalds as well.Â
Ana and I spent the rest of the day revising the Media Invites for the Earth Hour Media Launch for the following week, and she made me work on the website lightbox for Earth Hour.Â
We ended our day with another meeting to plan our tasks for the rest of the week. Tomorrow will be a content-heavy day for my laptop :(Â
Day 3!
Today I made three pocket videos for the following: Plastic, Food, and Waters! Got the videos from Ana and Alo, and I spent almost the entire day working on these.Â
Ana had to help me out with one of the pocket videos, so I forwarded the royalty free background tracks Iâve downloaded. For some reason, I was feeling a little down at the end of the workday.Â
Ana and I rode the jeepney to SM North on the way home.Â
Day 4!
Today I worked on the Media Launch floorplan. I fixed how the the entire setup will be situated in the hotel space.Â
I also worked on the additional text that will be included in the pocket videos. Today was a very easy day for me.Â
My first week with WWF went by so fast. I really enjoy working with everyone! It also helps that everyone in the Comms team are in the same age-range, so I really donât have to adjust to anything.Â

Special Edition incl. âWhy itâs Fabulousâ and âLuluâs List of Lessons Learntâ Iâm Lulu, a 21-year-old Marketing with Advertising Management student. Over the summer I completed a 3-month internship with SiteVisibility, before going into my big bad third year. It was just enough time to fall fully in love with SiteVis, but short enough that it went by far too quickly. Why Any Internships are a Good Idea Even with a degree, graduate life is tough. A whole load of people will come onto the job market at the same time of you, having done the same course as you. What are you going to have that helps you stand out? 58% of employers agree that work experience is the most popular qualification (with personality coming in second interestingly, with 48%). They want to see that you have experience applying the theories that youâve learnt in the real world. Additionally, itâs so hard to know how much youâll enjoy a profession until youâre there getting stuck in. Internships can be crucial when it comes to this with helping you to work out if youâve chosen the right area to work in and where you may even want to specialise further. Alongside this, it helps you get an idea of the company and how you fit into it. Itâs a brilliant entry point, with 85% of companies using internships to recruit for full-time roles. Taking all of this into account, itâs no surprise that student interns are three times more likely to get top jobs. So many joke about the struggle of finding a job when they ask for experience of the work previously. They feel this isnât the case due to having not been awarded previous jobs due to lack of experience. How my Internship at SiteVisibility came about Jason (the companies CEO) and I both went to the same school, and so met at a Marketing Networking events held by them. Everyoneâs had a moment of feeling slightly judged or inferior to someone. As a student around a load of business owners and people at the top of their game itâs very easy to feel this, regardless of whether the other person youâre interacting with means for this to be the case. Jason however was super approachable and easy to talk to; he was down to earth, had time for me and gave me some really sound, personalised advice thatâs ended up shaping what I plan to go on to do. I saw him the following year however he was surrounded by people the whole evening so I was only able to catch him on the way out. And, as it turned out, it was the most productive 2 minutes of the evening!  (I know this only from asking him, whilst I was an intern, why he had agreed to look at my CV. To this, he told me how far a good handshake and remembering someone goes). The points that made sure this happened were: Introducing myself to him (incl. handshake, eye contact and smile) Catching him when he was about to run off home to grab a business card Interrupting a conversation to quickly say hi before leaving (having remembered his name) I still however had no clue Iâd made a good impression, let alone remembered me until he mentioned having met me upon bumping into my dad (Pa) a month or so later at another event and was surprisingly positive. If it werenât for Pa telling me about this, I wouldnât have sent the email leading to the internship and would have missed out on this huge experience. Therefore, Iâm adding: 4. Actually send the email / LinkedIn message / make the call With each of the steps you may feel like youâre being annoying, as I did, however if youâre polite on each encounter, they are going to put you in a much better position than if you wimp out and donât do it at all. One quote brilliant theory to live by is Mark Twainâs famous quote: âTwenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didnât do than by the ones you did do. So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.â (He forgot about the stern lines, nonetheless these are very wise words.) Go introduce yourself to that person or send that email rather than allowing yourself to only wonder what wouldâve happened if you had. My Role at SiteVisibility Jason and Scott had been considering the role for a little while before I came onto the scene as Jason has a lot of networking, responding to day-to-day emails, meetings and looking communicating with prospects, alongside the actual running of the business. They wanted someone to help take a few of his tasks so he had more time to do his Mr-Boss-man stuff. When I did get in contact, they said it all worked together perfectly and so offered this position (after a few emails back and forth, a chat with the Scottmeister/Scottdog both over the phone and in person). My first day was basically back to back meetings which was awesome as I got to get an idea of the business. My role was âsupporting the Sales and Marketing function by learning about and then executing various lead generation and prospect nurturing activities designed to help grow the business.â My role was largely sending emails and carrying out various social media activities on behalf of the CEO and improving the sales process, coaxing prospects further along the pipeline. However, I had no clue just how much I would learn along the way. I got to attend a whole load of events whether for educational reasons or to represent SiteVis and learnt how to use a whole load of programmes including Salesforce, SEMrush, Leadfeeder, Sales Navigator, Process Street, Hunter, Trello and more. My desk buddy, Peter, who was also my line manager was super duper clever and taught me loads of short cuts for tasks which I previously hadnât thought could ever be automated, which Iâll use forever and ever. Mind blown. Why itâs Fabulous. Monthly Team events; our specially elected Minister of Fun organises this. Each month we all vote what we fancy doing (meal, water sports, climbing, outdoor cinema, cocktails, paintballing, escape rooms, volleyball etc.) and when, which is then booked with the Minister of Funâs allocated budget. Beer OâClock; employees are given (optional) a beer or cider at 4pm on Fridays to get the weekend off to a âlubricated startâ. Cheers for peers / Onboarding; Site Visibility uses a program which especially helps with the moving in process to keep a positive environment. You can send a âCheersâ any time youâve appreciated something someoneâs done and the person with the most each month gets a reward. They have spinny, wheely, height altering office chairs; I know everywhere has them however arenât they just one of the most beautiful things invented? Buddy system; youâre allocated a buddy who will take you out for lunch on your first day, take you around the office and be there for any questions you may have. This can be the same or separate to your line manager. Flexible Working Hours; you can come in whenever you fancy from 7:30am to 10am (subject to meetings). You can then leave earlier or later according to this, just making sure youâve worked your 7.5 hours at some point that day. Bagel Mondays; free bagels on a Monday â I never had Sunday Blues (that feeling when you remember you have work tomorrow) in the whole three months I was there. I adore my job; however, I think SiteVis are onto something with this. Office Atmosphere; everyone is just brilliant. I always get nervous around office environments, however itâs very relaxed (we get work done, but can have a laugh too), itâs such a perfect size and your colleagues make you feel right at home early on. Luluâs list of lessons learnt: Youâve got this Itâs okay to be nervous â I thought I was the only one until I discussed it with a few chums the other day. Youâve sold yourself and it worked. Now what? What if youâve sold more than you can deliver? What if youâve set yourself up to fail and canât do everything the job requires? My 56-year-old Aunty explained to me the other day âAbsolutely everyone, probably even the queen, has those thoughts every now and then; the oh no, what if they find me out? What if they realise I canât properly adult?â. It turns out this is called imposter syndrome, and thereâs a lot written on it. Our minds make us think of all the things that could go wrong. Thatâs how weâve managed to stay alive for so long, both you and humankind. Itâs good to be prepared, however sometimes this part of our mind goes into overdrive. There will always be a voice that tells you that you canât do things you want to do (and sometimes even things you need to do). Experience in environments that are new, and challenging can make you nervous and therefore give you the experience to distinguish between rational and irrational anxieties. The most important thing to remember is that you arenât alone in these thoughts and your new bosses want you to succeed too. Take notes on EVERYTHING / take it all in Even if you think someone else is taking notes â take better notes. This works when on your own, in a meeting or at your desk. Itâs always great to share anything youâve written down as different people will have picked up certain things from the meeting which you may have missed. Comparing different summaries not only allows you to pick up what you may have missed, but also make sure youâre all clear on the actions to be carried out following the meeting. It avoids the classic feeling of knowing you had a really good thought on something or something really important to do but not being able to remember it. Additionally, the process with which you carry out an activity can be super useful to someone else carrying out that activity, or even yourself when coming back to it. There are so many new things youâll come across as an intern, however, the quicker you learn it, the easier it all becomes. The more you learn, the easier it becomes and the better you feel about your job. Get excited about it / give it 100% I was lucky enough to be interning in a new city (big up Brighton) which allowed me to be antisocial for a couple of weeks when getting started â Iâd forgotten how tiring it can be when youâre new! So many words which Iâd learnt at university with the sole purpose of regurgitating them for assessments and now had to remember what they ACTUALLY meant. It sounded so much like a foreign language at some points that I felt I was back in my GCSE French listening exams and similarly I was frantically writing down words I was hearing in order to go away and Google them at my first opportunity. And I loved it. It was so exciting finding out about all these different programs, writing lists of everything, meeting everyone and seeing how I could make an impact. I found this really pushed me to learn more and do a better job. Make friends. Get involved with everything (out of the office too). I understand not everything is in your control and itâs hard to get the right balance of being friendly without looking overly confident, but the more you get involved and get to know everyone, the less you will worry about this balance and the more fun it will be. Every single person in the office made my experience that little bit better. Take every opportunity youâre given Be a âyesâ person. Be sure in yourself; the only feedback I had for my boss was to spartan kick me out of my comfort zone. Even if you feel youâre not ready for it, you can make yourself ready for it. Stop waiting for the perfect moment when you feel 100% ready. I was really lucky with all the opportunities offered at SiteVisibility not only with educational / entertaining events going on, but also the responsibility they were willing to give me if they felt I deserved it which was sometimes more work but super rewarding. Nothing like a bit of DIY If thereâs a task which you find yourself waiting on input from others in order to complete, donât be afraid of finding a way to do it yourself. This may involve getting a colleague to train you up on it or checking out a load of YouTube videos. There may also be things you think could work better. Feel free to create a plan for this or create a draft to show your boss just how possible it is and how well it could work / good it would look. Record all your successes This is something I didnât think of until half way through, unfortunately; however I highly recommend as it helps in a surprisingly large number of areas. Even the most ambitious, motivated people find themselves feeling a little lost and losing the will to keep going with their tasks with out Key Performance Indicator (KPI) is a term frequently used in the marketing world especially, however, itâs also incredibly important when doing personal evaluations. Get help if you need it Youâre there to learn and help them out. You wonât be able to learn everything by yourself. Theyâll want to make sure that youâre benefitting fully and learning whatâs needed, in terms of what theyâre getting in return, the more you know about what to do, the more productive youâll be for them. So, donât be afraid to ask for a hand in working something out if you find yourself stuck at any point. Be prepped to get addicted to coffee âŚor just any kind of caffeine

Internships Build Tomorrowâs Workforce
Cue up a little sunshine and suddenly everyoneâs thinking about summertime. And that means internships are a common denominator on many college studentsâ minds. Whether itâs required or not, most are looking to get a jump start on putting their newly minted education to the test with some real-world experience. In fact, several short years ago, I found myself in that very situation.
As a business person, considering hiring for an internship position might leave you with myriad feelings. But perhaps answering this one question will find the solution to all the othersâcan I provide this student what they need to further their journey to a career? The following four thoughts will ensure that not only your intern, but also your company, will reap the benefits of investing in tomorrowâs workforce.
Be realistic about your investment.
Itâs an age-old notion that interns are for coffee runs and grunt work. And itâs true that merely being exposed to your office environment will provide a certain amount of benefit, but the fact of the matter is you should be prepared to invest staff time in your intern. Whether it takes the form of preparing tasks for them to tackle over the course of their tenure or specifically training them on a certain skill, the true value you can provide is giving them valuable work experience. Speaking from experience, my best days were those spent tackling a targeted to-do list with trusted advisors at the ready to answer questions and guide me along the way (though it certainly didnât hurt me to make the coffee sometimes, too!). The more you empower your intern with projects to tackle, the more mileage youâll get out of their skills and the more you help them gain that valuable working knowledge.
Find an intern that fits your situation.
If you are looking to hire an intern, you are likely in an industry that requires some sort of specialized education. There are several options for finding an intern that fits your specific needs. One is to advertise as you typically would for any job opening. Anotherâif youâd like to pursue an intern from a particular college or university that has an emphasis in your area of focus, get in contact with them. Many universities have staff dedicated to connecting students with internships. They may offer job fairs, notice boards, or might even put you in direct contact with some potential recruits!
Take advantage of their perspective.
Oftenâthough not alwaysâyour potential interns will belong to a younger generation. They represent not only the future of your workforce but also your consumer market. Whether youâre selling widgets or services, your intern can bring a fresh perspective to your business, and insight into alike consumers. Plus, thereâs the added benefit that their education has laid a hefty groundwork of knowledge. Use this opportunity to collect valuable information that can contribute to the direction of your company.
Consider hiring potential.
Itâs a pretty good guarantee that within a year or less, your intern will likely be hitting the job market looking for full-time employment. The beauty of hiring a candidate as an intern is it gives you a direct window into their capabilities and work ethic, without any commitment beyond the internship. Likely youâve earned loyalty in the candidate from what youâve invested in them by the conclusion of the internship. And, ultimately, if the intern has had a positive experience with your company, and you feel their skillset matches with your needs, itâs in the best interest of both parties to formally bring them onboard.
At VistaComm, we love to share our thoughts and experiences in hopes that they fuel your business decisions in a positive way. One of our favorite internship success stories comes from our very own Graphic Designer/Editor Talisa Wager, who initially joined us as an intern. We will celebrate her fifth year with VistaComm this summer!

My Accomplishments
My McKinsey interview is this Friday! Itâs been a long time coming and Iâm in a really beautiful mindset - confident, excited, and above all GRATEFUL for this incredible journey of self-reflection, learning, and shared vulnerability with some of the most amazing people (especially women) I have connected with throughout my preparation process.
The last step: recognizing that I am capable of overcoming all odds and accomplishing amazing feats. Letâs start with the non-work.
Singing:
K-Pop Star. I made it into the Top 30 out of over 10,000 auditions worldwide. I was literally hand-picked to appear on TV and I could have gone all the way to the top 10 if I didnât drop out due to my circumstances. I remember how difficult it was during my exchange semester, figuring out where to borrow a keyboard and practicing at midnight quietly at my dorm, so that I could prepare multiple performances for the show to review. I must have been pretty damn nervous before I went up, but I gave a wonderful performance in front of the biggest people in South Koreaâs entertainment industry and made it on TV. Not everyone can say that! I know I act embarrassed about this accomplishment when others bring it up but I genuinely think this is a really cool feat.
Vancity Idol: I beat out 15 other singers representing their schools city-wide and won the entire competition. I remember how insanely nervous I was before going up - I was shaking and I felt like vomiting as I waited behind the curtains for my cue to walk onstage. But something magical happened when I sat down on that piano bench. Something clicked inside, and I went into this untouchable performance mode. This is what I need to channel - going into that performance mode when I am in my own zone and absolutely conquering whatever Iâm doing. And thatâs how the best performance of my entire life was born - the legendary rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody.
PW Jazz Cabaret: Minyoung, do you remember when you gave your first-ever solo singing performance? You bawled your eyes out before you went up on that tiny little stage in your high school cafeteria at the annual jazz cabaret because you were TERRIFIED. Your friends thought you were sniffling during your performance because you were singing about heartbreak. No, you were that nervous. And it ended up being the most precious performance ever - and look how far you came from that first-ever solo gig to singing on TV. Imagine if you let that initial fear stop you from ever going on-stage again. But you did. And you went further than you ever imagined.
Exchange:
You got rejected from NUS the first time you applied. You were devastated, because you knew this was what you wanted and it seemed like it was just so beyond your reach because of the academic requirements. But you didnât give up. You straight up applied again with better marks, a better essay and a better chance of being remembered thanks to the relationship you built with the exchange coordinator. And you were accepted! Iâm pretty sure they didnât send more than four or five students from Sauder that semester, and you were one of them. NUS is literally one of the top three most competitive exchange destinations. You should be proud of yourself for that. What would have happened if you had decided to let that initial rejection get to you? You would have missed out on one of the most incredible experiences of your life.Â
BMMP:
When I got rejected from BMMP the first time I applied, I genuinely believed that I didnât have what it takes. I didnât feel like I possessed that sense of charisma and excellence that my peers who were accepted clearly seemed to have. Yet, what happened? I re-applied the following year after landing the internship at Coca-Cola and got in no problem. If I had allowed the previous yearâs rejection to get to me, I would never have landed the brand management internship at PepsiCo.Â
Coke:
Remember when you had that really dejected conversation with Angelaě¸ë on the 49 bus during the summer of 2013? When you were so nervous about not finding a great internship after getting rejected from BMMP and not landing anything significant that summer? And she said donât you worry, youâll find your way in due time? Well you should go back and read the email she wrote you the summer you landed your internship at Coke, because she sums it up perfectly.Â
âI don't know if you remember, but around this time last year (it was sometime May or June when I was doing my summer internship), we hung out and were busing back from Metrotown back to your hood. You were feeling super down about not having secured a big corporate summer internship and feeling like you are falling behind your classmates. Do you remember that I told you things will be all good and to just give it one year's time? That I felt exactly that way when I was in your year, in your shoes? Well, look at you now! You may be too humble to admit it, but let me put things into perspective for ya. You beat out dozens (more like hundreds) of other competitors, secured a summer internship with a company with $46bn in revenue and an awesome, long-lasting brand (Coca Cola is as 'corporate' as it gets ...), and got yourself into the most prestigious marketing-related program at UBC. Isn't it funny how things can change in just one year?â
God the internship was one fucking shitshow when it started. They threw you into the fire during your second week after only one week of onboarding (which was mostly hanging out with truck drivers/technicians and maybe one day of shadowing sales reps). And yeah, you 100% crashed and burned. You ordered FOUR EXTRA PELLETS OF PRODUCT for goodness sake. You cried, you had to rely on your team, and you genuinely doubted whether or not you would figure it out eventually. But you know what? You fucking did. You not only figured it out but exceed your sales targets by 12% by getting along really well with every store manager you met in each new sales route you were assigned to. You even appeased an extremely angry manager by going above and beyond with your customer-centric attitude and made him an ally, someone who was sad to see you go. By the end of the summer, you gave a kick-ass presentation that ABSOLUTELY blew everyone away. Kendall was so impressed. And he did ask you about the full-time offer, even if it was casually done over Whatsapp. He wouldnât have asked if you didnât have what it takes. You went from being completely overwhelmed to owning your place in the ecosystem despite being a tiny Asian girl surrounded by blue-collar male workers, and kicking ass.
I will leave things here for now - to be continued tomorrow!
