Detrans female lurker here. I wanted to chime in with some thoughts on voice training. I think you’re correct that most ftms don’t really end up with a fully male-passing voice, but I unfortunately did and it used to be a huge insecurity and source of anxiety for me. The idea of training my voice sounded really intimidating at first, but I decided it was worth a try and I’m really glad I did. It took me a few months to get decent results, but now my trained voice sounds almost exactly like my pre-T voice, just a bit raspier. I see a lot of detrans women who feel they’re stuck with a voice they hate and I want to offer some reassurance that this isn’t the case—they can change it if they want to. Voice training can be a pain but it really does work, and it becomes automatic once you’ve been at it long enough.
Unrelated: thank you for being a voice of reason and nuance. Like you, I don’t regret my mastectomy, and when I first started orbiting radfem spaces I was very put off by all the “mutilated and ruined” talk. I find it deeply hypocritical, and I’m glad there are people speaking out against it.
Hi! So happy to meet you! I always felt pressured to hide that my surgery helped me, since it doesn't serve the common agenda of many radfems/gc folks, but one of my most core rules for myself is total honesty. I genuinely take great pride in approaching all things with nuance and caution (my nickname in a certain section of facebook back in the day was Queen of Nuance lmaoo). It makes me really happy to hear that it's noticed and makes a difference for others.
I think being vocal and honest about our positive experiences with surgery could also be a key step in helping to repair relations between radfems and trans folks, since there are many people in both groups (and some people who belong to both!) who aren't on the extreme end and see the potential benefit in building a bridge.
It also helps show genderists that I'm coming from a place of understanding, empathy, honesty, and genuineness, not hatred of trans/dysphoric/gnc people (I am dysphoric and gnc, and it could be argued I am trans in a medical but not ideological sense).
I also, VERY importantly, want this blog to be somewhere other radfems and others questioning gender ideology feel 100% safe to talk to me, ask questions, or express opinions that parts of radblr might react more harshly to. I don't think there's anything wrong with that - women are not required to be patient, educators, etc., and I certainly feel the need to scream and rant and lash out my fair share - but if we want to put the good of all women and girls first, and reach other women/girls and show them there is safety in sisterhood, some of us need to take that patient, nuanced role on sometimes. I find that people go from hateful to open pretty quick once they realize in one-on-one interaction that I'm not some trans-hating bogeyman, just a regular woman who understands dysphoria and wants everyone to be as healthy, happy, and free as possible.
Thanks for the voice training info btw! I definitely believe in the power of voice training. Despite some radfems claiming otherwise, when done right for a prolonged period of time, you can do most anything with vocal training, and it does become your "real voice." I think a lot of radfems who haven't known many MTFs irl think their voices are all fake and that if, say, they talk in their sleep, it would be in a regular deep man's voice. That's not true. Now, my experience is pretty limited to gender critical transsexuals rather than gendies, but I often discuss my mtf best friend on here, who's stayed over at me n my wife's house many times and is a hell of a sleep talker 🤣 At least in her case (and again, I use "she" bc my brain has only ever perceived her as female so it feels dishonest not to, not because she has asked me to or cares in the slightest), I can 100% confirm that the trained voice is permanent and never disappears - I mean it is like working out one muscle group a ton and letting another atrophy, so it makes sense. So it's not like voice training means talking in a fake voice for the rest of your life, which is what a lot of people seem to think.

Captain Obispo Losa quietly inspects the silver blade catching the rays of the sun above.
The sword is a gift to himself. Stolen from the halls of a governor, foolish enough to leave his daughter poorly protected. It had caught Bishop's attention as he’d waited patiently from his hiding place. Never used, the sword was hanging above the mantle. Hours of work from the local blacksmith deduced to a decorative piece to be discussed over dinner.
Bishop admires the golden filigree decorating the handle. The sword is the nicest weapon he’s ever touched. Probably worth more than his entire ship. He gives it a few swings, adjusting his stance as he quickly becomes accustomed to the weight in his hand.
“Teach me how to use one?”
The request breaks Bishop's concentration. A scoff of disbelief escapes his lips as he glances away from the sword in his hand. He allows his eyes to pass over the woman seated nearby.
Bishop had nearly forgotten she was keeping him company. The usually outspoken woman has been silent. Mesmerized by his handling of the sword.
Bishop's handling of the sword was quite impressive, but so was the man himself.
Seated on the deck, Theodosia has her back against the mainmast--a feeble attempt at mastering the sickness she has yet to master in her time at sea.
The tunic she wears is the cleanest the captain could provide. The loose-fitting fabric rolled up to her elbows. Her dark windblown curls are safe beneath a black hat, the tattered brim protecting her face from the rays of the midday sun. Another gift, courtesy of the captain. In fact, all of the clothes that Theodosia wears are from the captain.
If it were up to her, she wouldn’t have accepted a single thing from the man responsible for marooning her on his ship. However, the golden customized gown she wore upon her arrival--while extremely beautiful-- was impractical for a ship.
As much as she hated accepting his clothes, she needed the hat the most. Not used to spending a day's length in the sun, Theodosia needed it to prevent her face from getting burned.
Bishop considers her question. His gaze remains on the sword in his hand, admiring the balance of the blade.
“Putting a blade in the hand of a hostage...do you take me for a fool, Miss. Bell?” Bishop questions, raising an eyebrow as his gaze drifts to her.
“I do, actually.”
The unexpected response, matched with the confidence of her voice, halts the man’s swinging of the blade. He comes to a standstill, his full attention focused on the woman gazing up at him.
“And why’s that?”
Bishop watches Theodosia's brow furrow, her mind seeking a rational explanation for her smart-mouthed response. Her dark brown eyes widen, her lips settling into a smirk as she pushes herself up.
“If your ship were under attack, you would want me to know how to defend myself.”
The satisfied grin on her face does not produce her desired response. Instead of agreeing, Bishop laughs. The sound wipes the grin clean off Theodosia’s face.
It is a sound the woman is not used to having directed toward her. As the governor’s daughter, Theodosia is not accustomed to people laughing in her face. It is, however, an act the captain seems to love doing. It is his preferred form of dismissal.
“Not necessarily,” he responds. The teasing in Bishop's voice more apparent as his gaze falls to Theodosia's clenched fists. “I don’t care much about your life if we’re being honest.”
“I beg to differ, Mr. Losa.” Theodosia challenges. “It would only be to your benefit if I knew how to handle a sword, even at the novice level. Would you care to know why?”
“I know you’re going to tell me regardless.” He mumbles.
Bishop now understood why, over the years, he’d been informed a ship was no place for a lady. Theodosia Bell is more trouble than it is worth. Following her arrival, she has been attached to the captain’s hip at all times. She has taken said time to share what is on her mind. No matter the subject. For someone born higher than the orphaned captain, she has a mouth as filthy as his.
“I’m flattered you’ve gotten to know me so well, Captain,” Theodosia beams. Her teasing tone prompts Bishop to roll his eyes. “I’ll return to my previous scenario--”
“By all means, make it quick.” He sighs. “I’m trying to concentrate.”
The woman does not waste a single second to present her case. She has learned Bishop will simply leave her behind, literally, when he tires of her voice.
“If we were attacked, you would spend the entire time fighting to protect me. You may claim my life has no value to you, but if that were the case, I wouldn’t be on this god-forsaken ship. Now, would I?” The confidence in her voice is no match to the grin on her face as Theodosia watches the Captain fold his arms over his chest. “You need me alive to get whatever it is you’ll be demanding of my father. As I stated before if someone learned the value of your precious cargo...and decided to take it from you...you, Mr. Losa, would spend your entire time trying to defend me. This means you won’t be able to defend your own life--or your ship--to the best of your abilities. Despite what I said earlier, you do not strike me as a fool.”
A fool Bishop Losa is not.
Theodosia has a point, but that is not the deciding factor.
In their two weeks at sea, Bishop has learned a valuable lesson. He can save himself a headache if he does what Theodosia asks. A woman not used to hearing “no,” as a response to her requests can be a true pain in the ass. If they weren’t so far from port, Bishop would have turned back and left her and her hefty ransom behind.
Before she can change her mind, Theodosia finds herself standing across from Bishop. The sword that is usually hanging around his hip is in her left hand. With the sword in her hand, her mind is blank. The casual and frankly unbothered expression on Bishop’s face makes her question her initial request.
Noting her hesitance, Bishop motions for Theodosia to step closer.
“Ladies first.”
Theodosia straightens her stance, struggling to gauge the exact position to hold the sword. The smile on her face is confident, but her voice not so much.
“And who said pirates have no manners?"
With her hat discarded, she struggles to keep her dark curls under control. The breeze pushes them into her face, her irritation hindering her focus.
She pushes them back from her face a third time. Her gaze examines the patiently waiting man. Although the tip of her blade is directed towards his chest, Bishop’s gaze is on hers. The determination he finds in her gaze tells Bishop all he needs to know.
She strikes first, as requested, swinging as hard as she can. But before her stroke is complete, her opponent is gone from her line of sight.
The sudden shift in the tide causes Theodosia to stumble forward.
A gasp escapes her lips as she slips, her bare feet shifting against the freshly scrubbed deck. She grimaces as her knees slam against the surface, her sword slipping from her grip.
Her head hangs forward, her eyes gripped shut as she listens to the chuckles that fill the air.
Heat floods her face, her eyes taking in the crew members who have suddenly abandoned their posts. They’ve gathered to watch the unfolding lesson, their eyes passing between their grinning captain and his opponent.
One member steps forward, picking up Theodosia's abandoned sword. He waits until she stands to offer it to her.
As she reaches for it, he pulls it back. He waits for her hand to fall to her side to speak.
"You're not gonna get far holdin' it like that, Miss."
Theodosia watches the quartermaster's eyes briefly pass over her shoulder to the waiting captain. As his eyes return to hers, they're as soft as the smile on his lips.
He shifts the sword, allowing her a better view of the placements of his fingers on the hilt.
"Always keep your sword up," he explains, shifting to demonstrate the correct stance. "Cap's quicker than he lets on. You wanna protect yourself."
"Right."
Turning to face Bishop, Theodosia watches as he motions for her to step forward. His request is the same as before.
“Try again.”
This time, Theodosia is not as rash as her previous attempt. The new information provided has shifted her focus. Now, instead of thinking of how to attack, she's worried about ensuring she's in the proper stance. Before she can blink, the captain is suddenly closer to her.
Entirely too close.
She instinctively takes a step back.
She remembers to keep her sword raised, but the sound of metal slicing through the air freezes her on the spot.
Her scream pierces the air as the steel of Bishop’s blade clangs with hers. The force of the contact ripples through her arm, widening her eyes.
He strikes a second time.
Her now lowered sword leaves her defenseless, allowing the tip of Bishop's blade to stop less than an inch from the base of her throat.
The once laughing crewmembers now watch silently, all focused on the terrified look in her eyes.
Bishop's voice breaks the silence.
“First lesson, Miss Bell. When you pick up a sword, no one cares that you’re a woman. They won't stop because you look scared. They’ll strike you down the same as a man.”
Bishop takes a step back. His blade taps lightly against her elbow forcing Theodosia to lift her sword.
“Second. Always stand your ground.”
“Stand my ground--what did you expect me to do? Just stand there while you tried to kill me!”
“If I was trying to, you wouldn't be standing,” Bishop chuckles, the smile on his lips having a surprising effect. A calming effect that helps her take a breath. Seeing the captain smile was such a rare occasion. It caused her to give him a soft one in return. “But now you know, you never want a blade that closes to your throat again.”
“Fine, what else do I need to know?”
“Number three. Anyone can swing a sword.” He allows the blade of his to tap the side of his shoe. “Footwork is the most important part. Doesn’t matter how fast you strike if you can’t escape your opponent's return.”
He watches her eyes glance down to his feet. She shifts to mimic his stance, taking a moment to find her balance on the shifting deck.
To her annoyance, it takes Theodosia a long time to use everything thrown her way. Trying to remember stances, the correct way to hold, the correct way to strike, the correct way to parry--it leaves her head swimming. Her problem is she gets frustrated with each of her missteps. Not being perfect at a skill is foreign territory. The usually short-tempered captain is patient, forcing her to push her frustrations aside as he asks her to identify her mistakes.
There is no need for Theodosia to worry about hurting Bishop. She is practicing with the most skilled swordsman to ever sell the seas. There are moments when her blade comes close to cutting into his flesh or snagging his shirt. But, Bishop always manages to escape. It’s not until he sends a wink her way that Theodosia realizes each close moment was purposeful, a subtle attempt to boost her morale.
Overthinking may be her most unfavorable habit, but it is not her downfall.
It is the flashes of Bishop’s smile when she does something correctly. It is in one of those moments when he catches her off guard. One moment she’s focused on his smile. The next her eyes are gripped shut. Her back pressed against his heaving chest. The chill of his blade against her throat.
“I’d suggest that you yield, Miss Bell,” Bishop chuckles as her eyes open. “It’d be impossible for you to get out of this any other way.”
Theodosia can’t help but mirror the grin that is on her opponent's face.
“Not impossible,” she challenges, glancing over her shoulder at him.
Bishop’s stance wavers slightly as his eyes meet hers.
Despite the playfulness in her gaze, he is unable to foresee the kiss that follows her statement.
Her lips press a kiss against his cheek, the action loosening his grip around her.
Her giggle fills the air as Bishop lowers his sword to his side, his head shaking as she escapes his grip.
The smile she finds on his lips arches her eyebrow.
“Careful, Mr. Losa,” she giggles. “Wouldn’t want your crew to find out their captain actually knows how to smile.”

I have a bunch of questions for WS anon since I am interested in other celebs possible pr too!
1. With your job, is it regular for anyone working in the industry to have tea? And do people working in or share what’s real or not?
I would say it gives you the opportunity to hear gossip or rumors that only people in the industry would know. I will say you'd probably need to go out of your way to learn about it. In my case I work with athletes and aside from the people they hookup with, their scandals, vices it's not really a place with tea. But I do make a lot of friends in the industry and we gossip all the time and they share from their respective fields and about the celebs they work with or have a connection to. I guess it's the same as any kind of workplace gossip.
Working in what? You mean working in pr? A celeb's pr team will never tell you what is real/authentic or straight up fake or a mix of both. The most they'll give is what strategies they impose or how they mold things. But not directly, oh this is fake btw. For obvious reasons, they keep a lot of things secret and things only they would know. A lot of friends in pr do like sharing input or teach our gc how things go or look for the signs or the strategies we wouldn't even have figured without their help. A lot of times we also just hear a lot of rumors from inside sources that just outward contradicts what is being presented by the media/pr play of a celeb.
2. Can you tell me your thoughts on often thought pr couples? I am not a harrie at all and I see this from pop culture blogs.
lily/timmy - I don't know if it's pure pr or not but I've at least heard Timmy was also hooking up with other women during all those times he was with Lily. A lot of people have told me it's pure pr/mostly pr though. They did seem like a nice match as future it girl/boy but their reunion it didn't seem as interesting.
seb/ale - I actually don't follow either of those two enough. I thought Seb has always been pretty open about his gfs? At least I thought him and Leighton were pretty public. For his current gf, if it's pr then he hasn't gain a lot of fame imo. The only place I see him relevant or getting talked about is the tumblr/twitter stans which while loud isn't that big. I mean his fans sure let his last film flop hard, I doubt the BO was even enough to pay him.
henry/nat - I feel like I blocked out Henry's love life when he was dating a 19 year old. But I would say this is real. Until I see Natalie suddenly becoming a star I'd say this is pretty standard for Henry. Him and Kaley, yeah none of you can convince me that was real.
chris/jenny - A lot of people will kill me, but since Jessie admitted she also thinks they're pr then I'll admit I do too.
tom/zendaya - I think they're real. Either way I love it. We can probably judge based on how long this will last.
shawn/camila - real, but my friend says they're way more subdued in private at least
bennifer - I already sent an answer to this before

If you're asking if I think they're pure pr, I don't know what happens when they're alone together to say it's all fake. I imagine hiddleswift, abelena, ben/ana probably hookup in private but was never as serious or real as they made it appear. If you're asking if they're real and using it for pr, well yeah I would say all of these would qualify as they're using it for pr too which isn't a bad thing. Like Ryan/Blake are obviously real and using their relationship for publicity.
3. Do you think hiddleswift was bad pr for Tom?
Not really. I do think it was meant to be longer with a full better rollout and ended too early with Taylor backing out. As someone who considers herself a self-hating swiftie, Tom gained a lot of loyal fans in the fandom for example and hiddleswift was pretty memorable pop culture moment in general.
4. How do you really feel about the holivia questions and harries in general since you tend to get the most abuse from them?
I'm irritated because of the angry anons and people who can't respect opinion. Other than that, my opinion on holivia still remains the same and it will not physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, or financially hurt either Harry or Olivia. In the first place, I don't remember ever spending money for them. I think as long as Jessie allows pop culture discussion and allows the question, we can all and should respect opinion. I'm not in any way anti or pro holivia. I don't mind a pr relationship cause to me it's a normal and harmless part of their job. I also don't think pr should be equated as bad at all. We're kidding ourselves if we don't think celebs are like this.
5. I’m just basing this from the harry stans in this blog, but how do you see Harry benefit from holivia?
I already said this to my one harrie friend here but I always saw his fans overestimate his fame. Harry is big but he isn't BIG. He hasn't come to the level of Taylor, Drake, Ed, JB, or their counterparts for actors. Every celeb who came at that level went to levels of attention seeking and pr. When you're trying to venture into film, there are separate pr that could also be demanded from you. Being big in one industry doesn't equate to being an instant hit or success in the other. Especially when the film industry does have a lot of hesitation with singers to actors. Especially when with Harry he seems to want to be taken as a serious actor rather than the easy going route many of his contemporaries have done to jump start their acting career. Harry is being talked about a lot by blogs and accounts that used to barely mention him before. He is being discussed as a regular gossip which didn't happen for years. Imo fans just think he's too big for anything or that he is immune to pr or attention seeking. Me and my friends never saw him that way and we also never saw Harry as incredibly relevant or big, rather than he has an incredibly dedicated fanbase
Question for WS anon but I would also like to hear your opinion Jessie? Do you think Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling call the paps . Because I've generanlly heard that he is an extremely private ccelebrity but all those spottinga with his kid don't necessarily seem very organic to me Also are there any celebs that dont really call the paps?
You can be a private celeb and still call the paps. Ryan is a private guy but he has always been pretty open who he's dating and end of day they don't give us a lot of update or info about their relationship. Abel has started calling the paps a lot, but in hindsight he's still very private about himself.
I think the only celebs who don't call the paps are ones who don't have publicist.

They’re both still smiling half an hour later despite Sid having had a blood draw. Geno clutches the strips of ultrasound pictures and gazes down at them as Sid pulls on his clothes and settles onto the (frankly, extremely comfortable) loveseat next to him.
Dr. Agarwal is back in shortly after that to wrap up the visit. She spends time answering any lingering questions and then hands Sid a piece of paper. “That’s for a different prenatal vitamin. I’m hoping this one might not make you quite as nauseated. Everything else looks great, as we discussed, but I am a little worried about your nausea and swelling.”
Sid nods, hanging on her every word because this is why he agreed to come here. It’s a tremendous relief to have a doctor who listens to him.
“I don’t necessarily think it’s too much of a concern now other than that the nausea has been so severe and it’s a little early to be swelling so much. I think a lot of it probably has to do with the heat and maybe how much you’re on your feet, too. I’d like you to cut back your work hours.”
Sid frowns. That... is not good.
She keeps talking. “Make sure you’re staying as hydrated as possible and wear good, supportive shoes while you’re at work and then elevate your feet when you’re at home for the night. I know it’s not ideal but this is just how some pregnancies are. We’ll do everything we can to make it manageable for you.”
Sid swallows and nods. It’s not the greatest news but it could probably be a lot worse. It’s not like he can argue his way out of it anyhow so he bites back his protests and thanks her profusely for the time she’s spent with him which, looking at his watch, he realizes has been nearly an hour and a half. Suddenly, he sees another benefit to agreeing to come to this doctor—something he never could have done without Geno.
Sid tells him as much once they’re in the car but Geno just shakes his head. “Not have to thank me. Is my baby too and is important to me to take care both of you.” He glances at the ultrasound photos again with another smile. “Should be thanking you. You carrying baby, you doing all the hard work. You sacrifice so much for our baby.”
“It’s worth it.” Sid smiles at Geno and they both look at the pictures in Geno’s hand again.
“Best baby,” Geno mutters and Sidney laughs his agreement.
As soon as they’re back at the house Geno makes a beeline for his refrigerator and sticks the strip of ultrasound pictures to the door with magnets. There isn’t much to see yet but Sid feels like the little black and white blob is the most beautiful thing he’s ever laid eyes on. He thinks Geno must feel that way too, if the look on his face is anything to go by. So they stand there with matching smiles until Sid’s stomach starts to protest, growling loudly and Geno laughs. “Baby need to eat.”
It’s the kind of cheerful, lighthearted evening Sid hasn’t had in a long time; the kind of warmth that usually comes after a couple of glasses of wine but tonight has nothing to do with alcohol. They work together to make dinner and sit together at the breakfast bar eating, occasionally grinning at the pictures on the fridge and each other. Geno is puffed up, as proud as Sid has ever seen him in the short time they’ve known each other. “We do that,” Geno says proudly. “We best at make baby.”
Sid giggles at him but he can’t disagree. He’s surprised at how accomplished he feels looking at the tiny shapes in the picture so he fist bumps Geno and tips his chin up. “Yeah we are. We got this.”
Geno nods in agreement. “Best at make baby. Best at be dads. Make all other baby cry because they not have us,” he says with a smirk and Sid dissolves into giggles again.
Later they sit next to each other, reclined in the Penguins chairs eating fruit and watching TV together. Sid glances over and finally believes that Geno is really in this for the long haul. He’s really not going to leave Sid hanging, and it’s the most comforting thing he’s ever known.

Sid shifts and slowly blinks awake. It takes him a moment to realize he’s still in the chair in the media room. The last thing he remembers is musing about how comfortable the recliners are. Now he’s covered up with a soft Pens blanket and Geno is nowhere to be seen.
He glances at his phone. 11:17. He thinks about letting himself drift back off, it would be easy to do, but his lower back is a little stiff and he knows the bed will be more comfortable so he heaves himself out of the chair and makes his way towards the stairs. Most of the lights are off and he figures Geno probably went to bed until he sees light coming from the kitchen. Changing direction, he starts towards the kitchen but stops abruptly when he hears Geno’s voice, shaky and rough.

Sid frowns. Geno sounds so upset. Is someone here? He moves to the doorway and stops when he sees that Geno is on the phone, hunched over the breakfast bar. His muscles look tense and tight before he pops his head up and says roughly, “Его зовут Сид и я не оставлю его! Как я мог отказаться от собственного ребенка?”
Sid’s breath catches in his throat. Geno has been teaching him Russian words here and there but he doesn’t understand most of what he just heard. He can read the tone, though, and he can recognize his own name.
Sid. Whoever Geno is talking to, he’s talking about Sid and, he thinks, their baby. Sid swallows hard and backs away as quietly as he can—he has a feeling he wasn’t meant to hear this at all.
It takes him awhile to fall asleep. It’s another hour before Geno finally comes upstairs. Sid hears him pause outside his door and for a moment thinks he may come in but then he moves on down the hall.
Sid’s stayed over enough times now that he has a routine which basically consists of sleeping in and showering before he emerges. If Geno is there they eat breakfast together and maybe take a walk if it’s not too hot. They almost always end up in the pool. If Geno is gone to practice or meetings, Sid usually eats and leaves leftovers in the fridge for Geno before he either heads home to his own apartment or kills time in the pool until Geno gets back.
Today when Sid comes in Geno is sipping his tea. He looks up and then immediately looks away, only nodding when Sid tells him good morning.
“Breakfast in oven for keep warm.” He motions towards the oven before burying his nose in his phone.
“Aren’t you going to eat?”
“Not hungry.”
“Oh. Okay.” Sid retrieves the plate from the oven—an omelet with all his favorite fillings—and sets himself up at the breakfast bar. He takes a few bites before he decides to try again.
“So what’s the plan for today?”
“Hm?” Geno looks up.
“I was just asking what you want to do today.”
He shrugs and looks back at his phone. “Whatever you want is fine.”
“I thought you said we’d swim today. Like we normally do?”
“Then why you ask if you already know?” Geno snaps and Sid sits up straight. Geno has never spoken to him like that. Not once.
“Fuck. Sid, I’m sorry. Have rough morning but no excuse for talk to you like that.”
Sid swallows hard and looks closer at him, takes in the messy hair and the dark circles under his eyes. “You’re upset about the phone call last night, aren’t you?” he asks, thinly.
Geno snaps his face up. “How you know about that?”
“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop. I woke up and heard… Well I heard you talking in Russian but you said my name and you sounded really upset.”
“You not supposed to hear that.”
“I said I didn’t mean to,” Sid says before finally putting his fork on the plate and pushing it away with more than half an omelet left. “I should go.”
“Don’t go!” Geno runs a hand through his hair and gently puts a hand on Sid’s arm. “Sid, please.” Geno looks so desperate and Sid just can’t understand it.
“Why? All I’ve done is make things worse and worse for you.”
“No, that not true!”
“It didn’t sound that way last night.”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“It does matter! Who was giving you trouble this time? Your agent? Team lawyers? PR?”
“Parents.”  Geno says it so quietly that it takes Sid a moment to comprehend before he sucks in a breath and slumps.
“Oh god. Geno, I’m so sorry.” Sid shakes his head, closes his eyes and can’t bear to look up at his sad face.
“Have nothing to be sorry for. I tell you this over and over. What it take for you to believe me?”
“Geno, come on. Your parents?” Sid shakes his head. “I’m not worth that.”
Geno frowns hard and moves to stand in front of him, taking his face in his hands. “Not ever say that, Sid. We make baby and baby is worth everything.”
“But you barely even know me and now you’re stuck with me.”
“I know we having baby together. Know you good person, good heart. I know you hard worker, and so stubborn.” Geno smiles at him. “Maybe not know a lot but not know nothing. Not stuck, Sid. Choose not to walk away because I want to know you and know my baby. Learning more every day because I want to. And I’m like everything I’m learn so far. Even the stubborn.”
“But… your parents.”
Geno shakes his head. “Is their choice if they not support.”
“Is that what they said to you?”
He shrugs. “Not exact. They not happy I was with guy but not say they not want me. Same as your parents.”
Sid nods. “Maybe but I can go back to Canada. If this gets out—”
“Then I deal with but would give all that up before I give this up. You not get this way alone and I’m not leave you to deal with alone. This our baby, Sid. And okay, maybe not plan for right now but ever since I’m find out I’m so happy. Even when things are scary, when not sure how we handle it all, I’m still so happy. I’m going to be a papa, Sid, and I want that.”
“Really?” Sid offers up a tentative smile.
“Sid,” Geno starts and wraps his hands around one of Sid’s. “You sacrifice so much to carry our baby. You worth everything.”

When Pete Davidson wiped his Instagram account Monday — deleting ALL traces of his beloved fiancé — the Internet started freaking out. Which, after a few short hours in the dark, prompted the comedian to return to the platform to clear up a few things.

At PulteGroup, Internal Audit Opens Many Doors
A typical job that an eager-to-leave Big 4 auditor might come across is that of an internal auditor. These jobs are plentiful within public companies large and small, but there tends to be a stigma that internal auditors are merely corporate hall monitors with limited upward mobility.  After speaking to Megan Scheiderich, Director of Internal Audit at PulteGroup, we have a different outlook on the benefits and potential of a career path in internal audit. She discussed the path to her position at the company, the transition from a Big 4 position to industry, what makes for a good internal auditor, and more.  This interview has been edited for length and clarity.  GC: First, we should get some background — What’s the arc of your career been so far?  Megan Scheiderich: Going way back, I started at University of Tennessee as an engineering major, but switched to accounting due to the ability to see and understand businesses. I got a double major in accounting and international management and skipped the masters since I had the CPA hours.  I was with Deloitte for ten years, and left as a senior manager. I worked solely in our real estate group, with clients ranging from homebuilders to public and private REITs in multifamily, office, industrial, and retail. My favorite Deloitte experience is still working on Augusta National, which was in the real estate group.  I loved public accounting – I had great clients and teams. But, I needed to take a step more for my personal life and achieve more balance. I started a program at Deloitte (WIN -Women’s Initiative Network) that helps high performing senior managers prepare for the partner process. It was going through that program that helped me clarify that, while I truly enjoyed what I did, I didn’t want to be in public forever. That was a really difficult choice because I enjoyed public accounting and I always saw myself as a partner at Deloitte. However, when I looked up to those I worked with as partner, they worked just as hard as I did. The balance didn’t seem to come with the partner promotion and with that, I didn’t see myself being able to achieve my personal goals staying at Deloitte.  Before I truly pulled the plug with Deloitte, I took nearly six months off (through a leave of absence program with Deloitte) and traveled, did volunteer work… it is a huge benefit of being with a large firm. I spent a month in Spain.  When I left, I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted in my next role, but defined my search by what I didn’t want: a public company in SEC reporting or internal audit. My goal was to find a private company in real estate with a role that wasn’t siloed within the accounting function. I wanted to get to know the business and operations within my next role. I found the perfect role (after a lot of looking) at a small regional homebuilder as the corporate controller. There, I was able to help take a small private accounting function and help transform it into a more timely and accurate department. I was also able to get my hands into other areas – sales and purchasing, to name a couple. The builder had been purchased by outside investors from its original founder. The investors knew they wanted an exit event eventually, and upgrading the accounting was part of this.  PulteGroup purchased the builder in January 2016, and I came along with it to help lead the integration. As Director of Finance for the Southeast Area, my role was very different from any I previously held, primarily in that I went from having a team of direct reports, to having nearly none as we completed the integration. Additionally, the role was very opportunistic, as I was able to define and work through projects in the area, even acting as an interim VP of Finance for two of our divisions as theirs were out on maternity and paternity leaves, providing direct exposure to the division’s operations.  Originally, my plan was to find a VP of Finance role in a division after about two years. Two things changed – (1) I met my husband, who isn’t able to relocate right now; and (2) the internal audit job became available. I never would have considered this role from the outside – but I’ve been nothing but impressed by the tone of the organization and the level of respect for the finance function. Within Pulte, the finance function has a seat at the table.   Check out available jobs with PulteGroup here .   GC: We recently interviewed a slew of controllers about their transition from public accounting to an industry job? How would you describe your experience of moving on to a career outside the Big 4?  MS: It’s a huge transition – My biggest surprises in a small accounting shop at a private company were the ability of my team to shift and change. In public, if you ask your team to shift gears and explain why, it’s a matter of how long it takes to do it. In a small private company (in this case, with some of my staff tenured over 30 years), change can be difficult. I found change management was one of the biggest obstacles I had to work through as you didn’t have the immediate buy-in like in public, you had to paint the picture of why things had to change.  Second, the perspective – I think as public accountants we can lose sight of what is important to the operators of the business. Yes, the numbers are important – but as a controller often my hottest fire was finding a new staff accountant and training them versus ensuring the audit team had the debt rollforward the minute they needed it.  GC: What attracted you to the internal audit position?   MS: A few things. First, the ability to shape a team once more. At Deloitte, I was highly involved in training our new hires to seniors. I missed having a team where I could have an impact on their development. Additionally, exposure to senior leadership. This role is highly visible in the organization. I have more opportunity to meet with the leadership throughout the company, not just the region.  GC: What attributes make for a good internal auditor?   MS: We look for the skills of the auditor, but we look ahead to people who can be successful in the next role as well. As the leader of the team, I try to give the group opportunities to see more than just the audit, for example – working with a division on an M&A project, or filling in at a division in an area where they are interested to gain experience.  In terms of how our culture fits in – two responses: Finance is key to the organization, as we talked about, so there is a lot of respect for what we do and a desire to get to know the audit team;  Internal promotion isn’t limited to finance – when we have openings, the company first looks internally to see if it can be filled, so there is a desire to build the skillset of our team members so they can be attractive choices to fill those roles.  GC: What kind of questions should a person ask themselves before considering an internal audit position?  MS: I would focus on the career path and the goals of the individual – some internal audit groups are more long-term in nature. That’s a wonderful path for those who want it, they can become experts in the company and the field – and many of the groups offer the opportunity to do many types of audits which can keep the variety and ability to grow high. These roles can offer work/life balance, but perhaps the trajectory gets a little shallower from public.  I think our group offers the best of many things – you can continue to see a path to some exciting roles to keep career momentum for those who want that, but you can get more work/life balance than public, and (perhaps) a little less travel. A typical job that an eager-to-leave Big 4 auditor might come across is that of an internal auditor. These jobs are plentiful within public companies large and small, but there tends to be a stigma that internal auditors are merely corporate hall monitors with limited upward mobility.
After speaking to Megan Scheiderich, Director of Internal Audit at PulteGroup, we have a different outlook on the benefits and potential of a career path in internal audit. She discussed the path to her position at the company, the transition from a Big 4 position to industry, what makes for a good internal auditor, and more.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity.
GC: First, we should get some background — What’s the arc of your career been so far?
Megan Scheiderich: Going way back, I started at University of Tennessee as an engineering major, but switched to accounting due to the ability to see and understand businesses. I got a double major in accounting and international management and skipped the masters since I had the CPA hours.
I was with Deloitte for ten years, and left as a senior manager. I worked solely in our real estate group, with clients ranging from homebuilders to public and private REITs in multifamily, office, industrial, and retail. My favorite Deloitte experience is still working on Augusta National, which was in the real estate group.
I loved public accounting – I had great clients and teams. But, I needed to take a step more for my personal life and achieve more balance. I started a program at Deloitte (WIN -Women’s Initiative Network) that helps high performing senior managers prepare for the partner process. It was going through that program that helped me clarify that, while I truly enjoyed what I did, I didn’t want to be in public forever. That was a really difficult choice because I enjoyed public accounting and I always saw myself as a partner at Deloitte. However, when I looked up to those I worked with as partner, they worked just as hard as I did. The balance didn’t seem to come with the partner promotion and with that, I didn’t see myself being able to achieve my personal goals staying at Deloitte.
Before I truly pulled the plug with Deloitte, I took nearly six months off (through a leave of absence program with Deloitte) and traveled, did volunteer work… it is a huge benefit of being with a large firm. I spent a month in Spain.
When I left, I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted in my next role, but defined my search by what I didn’t want: a public company in SEC reporting or internal audit. My goal was to find a private company in real estate with a role that wasn’t siloed within the accounting function. I wanted to get to know the business and operations within my next role. I found the perfect role (after a lot of looking) at a small regional homebuilder as the corporate controller. There, I was able to help take a small private accounting function and help transform it into a more timely and accurate department. I was also able to get my hands into other areas – sales and purchasing, to name a couple. The builder had been purchased by outside investors from its original founder. The investors knew they wanted an exit event eventually, and upgrading the accounting was part of this.
PulteGroup purchased the builder in January 2016, and I came along with it to help lead the integration. As Director of Finance for the Southeast Area, my role was very different from any I previously held, primarily in that I went from having a team of direct reports, to having nearly none as we completed the integration. Additionally, the role was very opportunistic, as I was able to define and work through projects in the area, even acting as an interim VP of Finance for two of our divisions as theirs were out on maternity and paternity leaves, providing direct exposure to the division’s operations.
Originally, my plan was to find a VP of Finance role in a division after about two years. Two things changed – (1) I met my husband, who isn’t able to relocate right now; and (2) the internal audit job became available. I never would have considered this role from the outside – but I’ve been nothing but impressed by the tone of the organization and the level of respect for the finance function. Within Pulte, the finance function has a seat at the table.

GC: We recently interviewed a slew of controllers about their transition from public accounting to an industry job? How would you describe your experience of moving on to a career outside the Big 4?
MS: It’s a huge transition – My biggest surprises in a small accounting shop at a private company were the ability of my team to shift and change. In public, if you ask your team to shift gears and explain why, it’s a matter of how long it takes to do it. In a small private company (in this case, with some of my staff tenured over 30 years), change can be difficult. I found change management was one of the biggest obstacles I had to work through as you didn’t have the immediate buy-in like in public, you had to paint the picture of why things had to change.
Second, the perspective – I think as public accountants we can lose sight of what is important to the operators of the business. Yes, the numbers are important – but as a controller often my hottest fire was finding a new staff accountant and training them versus ensuring the audit team had the debt rollforward the minute they needed it.
GC: What attracted you to the internal audit position?
MS: A few things. First, the ability to shape a team once more. At Deloitte, I was highly involved in training our new hires to seniors. I missed having a team where I could have an impact on their development. Additionally, exposure to senior leadership. This role is highly visible in the organization. I have more opportunity to meet with the leadership throughout the company, not just the region.

Learning to correctly use resources to support your writing is an essential component of your academic success.
Directions: Each step of this assignment will ask you to navigate and explore different components of the GCU Fleming Library. There are seven steps, each containing a question. Record your answers to the questions in the appropriate sections.

Step 1: How to Access the Library
There are a number of ways to access the library’s website. Use one of these to reach the Library Research & Resources page:
1. Go directly to the GCU Library Research & Resources page by typing http://www.gcu.edu/Student-Life/Library.php into your Internet browser and clicking “Enter”.
2. Under the “Access Library Resources” section on the right, select the “Library Research and Resources Page”.

Step 2: How to Find Books
Books have increasingly become available electronically. Unfortunately, these are rarely free, unless they are in the public domain. Most public domain books are quite old, so if you wish to find more current books, the best place to go is the library website. Because you have access to the GCU Fleming Library, you have access to over 100,000 books—free.
Note: The library also lists the physical books available on the Phoenix campus. You can remove those from your search for your convenience. See below for instructions.
1. On the Library Research & Resources page, click the link that says: “Find Books and More”.
2. In the search box type: “study skills” and click the Search button.
3. Under “Form of Item” in the column on the left, click “Electronic”.
4. To access an electronic book of your choice, under the listing of the book, click the link below the word “Online,” or if that is not available, click the title of the book, and click the link that says “View E-resource” in the box below the title information.
Question 2: Write the Title, Author, and Publisher of the 3rd book in the list of results you retrieved.
Step 3: Library Databases
The vast majority of resources available are in the library’s databases. These are collections of articles that you can access using various search platforms. Resources available include magazines, newspapers, reports, journal articles, encyclopedias, and streaming videos. The easiest way to find articles on your topic is to search in a database that specializes in your subject area. This allows you to search for more relevant information without having to sort through masses of sources not related to your topic.
1. On the Library Research & Resources page, click the link that says: “Find Journal Articles.”
2. Choose a Subject in the list located under “Find Databases by Subject.” (Hint: Choose one related to your degree program.)
3. Scroll down to see all of the databases relevant to this subject. Those in the first section under “Recommended” are the top databases in that area.

Step 4: Narrowing Your Search for Articles
For this section, you will be working in a database called “Academic Search Complete.” ASCis a multidisciplinary database containing a variety of topics and types of resources including magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals and publications. There will be times when it may seem easier to use magazines and newspapers, but in general, focusing on scholarly sources (mostly located in peer-reviewed journal articles) will bring a stronger academic quality to your research. Follow the instructions below to access and begin searching in Academic Search Complete.
1. On the Library Research & Resources page, click the link “Find Journal Articles.”
2. In the box to the right titled “Don’t Know Where to Start.” click on “Academic Search Complete.”
3. Sign in if prompted, using your GCU login and password.
4. On the Search page, scroll down to the “Limit Your Results “section.
5. Check the box beside “Scholarly” (Peer Reviewed) journals and make sure “Full Text” is checked as well.

Step 5: Finding Journal Articles
The key to successful searching is using keywords appropriately. Combining terms and thinking of alternative words (such as synonyms) will help you find better and more relevant articles.
A quick note about databases: EBSCO is the name of the company that provides this database, the actual name of the database is “Academic Search Complete.” You may see other databases similar to this one provided by EBSCO as well, but the most important factor is what collection you are in, as each collection contains different kinds of articles and resources.
1. On the page you ended at in Step 4, scroll to the top. (Make sure the Peer Reviewed and Full Text boxes are still checked.) In the first search box to the right of the EBSCO Host circle, type the words “classroom management.”
2. In the second box down, to the right of the word “and”, type the words “learning disabilities.”
3. Click the Search button located to the right of the search boxes.
4. Scroll down to see the articles retrieved by the database.
Question 5: Provide the title of the third journal article that is listed in the results.
Step 6: Article Details
In addition to the actual full text of the article, the databases will provide valuable information about an article. You will see things such as authors, source, subject terms, and abstract. The abstract is a brief summary of the article you found.
1. Click on the title of the third article you found in Step 5.
2. Scroll down this page and find the Article Abstract.
Question 6: Copy and paste the abstract below. Explain how an abstract is valuable to your research process and how it will save you time.
Step 7: Permanent and Persistent Links
Databases are designed as powerful searching tools; unfortunately, this means the website link located at the top of any page in a database is temporary and is based on your search at the time. Should you try to save that link as a bookmark or copy and paste it to use at a later time, it will not work. However, the databases have links that are tied directly to the articles you find. Follow the steps below to find the permalink (persistent, durable link, or document URL)to the article you accessed in Step 5.
1. On the same page where you found the abstract, look to the right for the “Tools” column.
2. Click on the link that says “Permalink.”
3. A box will pop up above the article title with a permanent link.

Step 8: Using Library Databases to Cite Articles
Another important option under the tool bar is the “Cite” button. In academic writing, citing your sources is very important. It will tell your reader that the information that you are using is the property of someone else. It will also show your reader exactly where you found this information and how to access this information again. This is a necessary step in avoiding academic dishonesty issues like plagiarism.
Note: Remember, GCU Style required for your undergraduate coursework is a simplified version of APA.

Abstract The number of adult learners who participate in online learning has rapidly grown in the last two decades due to online learning’s many advantages. In spite of the growth, the high dropout rate in online learning has been of concern to many higher education institutions and organizations. The purpose of this study was to determine whether persistent learners and dropouts are different in individual characteristics (i.e., age, gender, and educational level), external factors (i.e., family and organizational supports), and internal factors (i.e., satisfaction and relevance as sub-dimensions of motivation). Quantitative data were collected from 147 learners who had dropped out of or finished one of the online courses offered from a large Midwestern university. Dropouts and persistent learners showed statistical differences in perceptions of family and organizational support, and satisfaction and relevance. July 2, 2018: Tattoo tribute to Pete’s late father
Grande debuts a new foot tattoo “8418”, which was the badge number of Davidson’s late father who was a firefighter and passed away during the September 11 terrorist attacks in NYC.
July 5,2018: Ariana addresses Pete’s Manchester joke
At a stand-up show last fall—well before the couple linked up—Pete Davidson made a joke about the Manchester Arena bombing that killed 22 patrons at an Ariana Grande concert. Essentially, the joke was that the horrific incident lead Grande to realize how famous she was, because “Britney Spears didn’t have a terrorist attack at her concert.” (Poor taste, we know.)
With the joke resurfacing on the web, Ariana finally felt she needed to comment.

July 23, 2018: Pete deletes all his Instagrams
When Pete Davidson wiped his Instagram account Monday — deleting ALL traces of his beloved fiancé — the Internet started freaking out. Which, after a few short hours in the dark, prompted the comedian to return to the platform to clear up a few things.
“No there’s nothing wrong. No nothing happened. No there’s nothing cryptic about anything,” he explained on Instagram Stories. “I just don’t wanna be on Instagram anymore. Or on any social media platform. The internet is an evil place and it doesn’t make me feel good. Why should I spend any time on negative energy when my real life is fucking lit. The fact that I even have to say this proves my point. I love you all and I’m sure I’ll be back at some point.”
Davidson’s departure from social media seems to have rubbed off on Grande, who responded to a fan saying that she’s also taking a step back from Twitter and Instagram. “Just sometimes can’t help but bump into some negative shit that really can bum u out,” she wrote on Monday, “and it’s not worth it honestly.”
