It may be selfish of me to say, but thank you for sticking around. Everyone seemed to have such a reactionary stance as soon as it happened (and totally not blaming anyone, you should step back when you need to), but I want to still be able to enjoy mcyt, MCC, and even dream team content. seeing other people that took a few days to take in what was going on and evaluating that they could still interact with the content makes me feel better and lets me hope that maybe some people will find their way back to the community as time goes on.

i think this past week has been a very strange time for everyone and i cant say enough how much i respect and understand anyone who has left the community whether that be a step back from mcyt content as a whole or specifically from dream team like there was an overwhelming amount of information that came out last weekend and so i do get where people are coming from,,

gawd i said i wasnt gonna write a Statement™ and i dont think i can write my thoughts as elegantly as jan did but allowing myself to talk through the situation with irls and even some friends on here in dms really allowed me to get a better grasp of my own thoughts on everything that's gone down,, this past week has felt super divided with there being two strong opposing stances with no room for those whose thoughts fell in a more middle ground which is mostly where i've been hanging,, i think one of the most important take aways people, including myself, got from this is that we were Way too emotionally and mentally reliant on this community and its creators. like i've seen so many people talk about how good they feel without having to constantly be on top of every single moment of content and i think thats really important. like i'll say it right now, i still plan to interact with dteam's content on some level, But it will definitely be different from before which i think is something many of you can relate to ! i respect and love anyone who wants to unfollow or block if they dont want to eventually see this type of content on dash <3

my version of character’s ages. no particular message to address, i just like things sorted out. white are ages stated canonically, blue are my headcanons

reasons for them:

gintoki: has been stated to be in his 20s canonically a couple of times. 27 because hijikata’s age is stated 27 in canon, and considering that they were initially one character who then divided it’s sensible to assume that they are of the same age

otose: has been stated to be in her early 60s in canon. 63 because it’s the average, but generally i see her as being 62-63

catherine: has been stated to be in her early 30s in canon. 34 because of her character overall, it leans towards the latest part for me

zura: he’s probably the same age as gintoki. don’t see him being younger or older

soyo: has been stated to be a bit older than kagura in canon. sorachi changes his drawing style for girls 16+ a whole lot (as in, gives them boobs) so it’s safe to assume she’s under 16 (lack of boobs)

sakamoto: no particular reason but i feel he’s a bit older than the other joui. first off, he’s an addition to the initial trio so there might be something to single him off; sorachi is very fond of sakamoto ryoma, whom he based the gintama sakamoto on, so another reason; he’s the heir of a rich merchant sent to war for business - the war was 10 years ago which would make him 18 at the time, which, again, feels natural to me

takasugi: he’s been created to mirror & contrast gintoki’s character so i doubt they’re of different ages

saigo: dyes his hair but has black eyebrows. no particular reason, just feels middle-aged to me

sacchan: now that’s a tricky one. the thing is, this is shounen jump. jump is targeted at children (well teens and pre-teens mostly, though a good portion of young adults read it too), and in children’s media in japan female characters over 20 are usually a no-no. two simple reasons: the targeted audience can’t relate to older women (yes, over 20 it’s “older women”) and women in fiction are generally prohibited to age (just good old sexism)

now sacchan here, she’s part of diamond perfume who is led by tae, who is canonically 18. in the beginning when she just met her, sacchan was refering to otae as “otae-san”, “san” being a honorific used for people of the same age or older, but further on she dropped the “san”. sure, one can argue that about anyone calls tae as “otae-san” because of the latter’s natural domineering personality and whatnot, but still; i’ve only seen people headcanon her as 23-24 which feels really off because she keeps hanging around tae and kyuubei (both canonically under 20). besides, she stated in canon that she’s a virgin, which, again, feels odd for someone who is over 20 (no prejudice here, just saying). i don’t necessarily insist on it, but she’s 18 or 19 in my perception until i’m proven wrong by sorachi.

krystel: gintoki has a crush on her which would be innapropriate (the whole of gintama is innapropriate i know, but as a general rule) if she weren’t close to him in age. she also married canonically, and while the average for japanese women is a little bit older, the christmas cake rule breaks in; it’s a shounen manga, after all. unrelated, but her name isn’t ana. “ana” comes from “announcer” (anansaa in japanese), it’s not her name, just a title used for puns.

matsudaira: tbh he feels like he could be in his 50s too but it doesn’t really matter. he’s the chief of police, a post that has to be earned over many years of work as a lesser grade policeman. he has a wife and a daughter which are imperative to be able to raise in ranks, a big house and servants, which means he’s wealthy, and it wasn’t mentioned that he’d be a heir of any fortune so he probably got his status through work, so being in his 60s feels sensible to me.

zenzo: has been to school with sacchan so he can’t be more than 3-4 years older. he’s a heir to an organisation and comes from old money, so he has to be over 20 to exercit full power over both his wealth and workplace (the legal age in japan today and in canon is 20).

umibozu: is canonically in his 40s. 43-45 is the age range i get from him, so merely the average

matako: same reason as sacchan really, girls cant be too old in shounen manga. she’s either 18 or 19 to me. kagura doesn’t generally trouble herself with respect towards her elders but she shows a certain distance towards people who are not teenagers, which she didn’t show with matako, so there’s that.

henpeita: general age for the standard open pedophile *shrugs*

bansai: actually his age range is 26-28 for me; he’s a producer so he probably owns a business, and that’s probably what fuels the kiheitai financially. he refers to takasugi by name, without any honorifics, which could easily make him a bit older than him or the same age (so 28 or 27), but sorachi stated that he’s a pervert so why not.

kyuubei: i don’t think she’s younger than tae. might be older, even. refers to tae as “tae-chan” which puts her at least at the same age, but considering that it’s been like this ever since they were children, might easily make her a bit older. shinpachi refers to her as “kyuubei-san” so she’s definitely older than him too.

toujo: no particular reason

hinowa: i highly doubt that she is in her 30s. from the way he speaks to her, she is definitely a bit older than gintoki, so i think she is 28 or 29. 30 is the catherine age, prohibited to pretty women in shounen manga. when tsukuyo was brought to yoshiwara, hinowa was already working as a prostitute, which makes her at least 15-16 at the time, but she seems to have been there for a while, which could easily make her older. there was a certain amount of time between tsukuyo being taken aback with her and swearing to protect her and the time seita was born, and he’s 8 in canon, which makes hinowa 19-20 at the time she tried to escape. i doubt she’d attempt to if she was older, too.

tsukuyo: again, same reason as sacchan. i see people headcanoning her as over 20, which would make it weird for her to hang around 18 years olds and being bossed around by one of them. tae refers to both her and sacchan as sarutobi-san and tsukuyo-san accordingly in the beginning, which makes them both at least the same age as her. but it’s mostly the “girls can’t age” concept working here too. i see her as either 18 or 19

isaburo: was newly married 4 years ago and comes from old money, so marrying in late 20s for men is an ordinary thing. got the status as chief probably through connections rather than work. could easily be in his late 30s too though.

nobume: was a child when shouyo made her his student, was still a child when she met isaburo - definitely younger than kagura, drawn in the style sorachi uses for children. as stated previously, 16 years old girls get the boobs so there’s that. isaburo refers to her as “nobume-san”, which is an affectionate way fathers refer to their very young daughters; would be kinda weird if he did so while she’s over 18. either 16 or 17 for me.

I'm not sure if it was the exact middle or anything, but that's what it felt like neck deep in the rows of file cabinets and servers. Anyway, the archives are heavily guarded. I'm pretty shocked he had clearance but in hindsight, but also? Not really. I told you his files were a fucking mess and his permissions were probably redacted as well.

schwartzellie: There's cameras all over. Lasers. Devil's traps. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if any flat surface read DNA or heat signatures or something. Schwartz is really out-there about security. I mean, there's less than a handful of people who can get into the archives, and they're 99% accompanied by Schwartz herself.

schwartzellie: It is. As far as I know, the only people with permissions to enter the archives are Schwartz, Irkalla, myself, and now... Carlos. It's under such heavy security that two people on shift have to watch it. One physically, and the other in a special cam room somewhere on site. Like... it's really guarded.

schwartzellie: Yeah. And when we got to the middle, he just stood there and wouldn't look me in the eyes. He literally titled his head back and locked eyes with one of the, what I assume was, a camera. Stared into it the whole time we talked.

I asked around and no one knew of anyone who matched that description ever working at SI. No one knew who I was talking about, and by then, his face was too blurry in my memory to ask again. After a few days of frustration, I asked Jade to help me. He reads lips, you know. So I tried to make the same movements I remembered Carlos making with his mouth, but Jade had no idea what I was trying to say. He said it was just gibberish.

He fiddled with it, then downloaded an iSpy game from the app store.

He explained to me that it was probably just an advertisement for a new game that was mass spammed from a link I might have clicked and that, with the actual app in, he was able to turn off the notifications. But that's what he said, not what he showed me.

It has access to everything, including your cam and mic. Getting rid of the phone will only make whoever's watching suspicious. I recommend playing dumb while I investigate."

I called the security office to ask for video of the hall, and got sent a video where I just walk by the window like nothing happened. Then I come back, sit down, and cry.

On the morning of Sept 14, 2011 my sister woke me up at home asking me where my car was. I went outside to discover my vehicle was gone. So I call the police to come and take a report but of course there wasn't enough officers on duty to send one out so I wake up my brother to get a ride to the station. Keep in mind this is between 2:30-5:00am and the last time I actually saw my car was Sept 13, 2011 at approx 11pm. I arrive at the police station where I make a report, they take down all the info and send me home with the report. Approx 1 hour later they call me and say my vehicle was recovered in a nearby city and they gave me the number to that police station. So I hurry to call them but of course they were closed until 8am. At 8am I call them they said bring my ID and insurance info to recover the vehicle. I go down there and ask questions but they told me they weren't allowed to disclose any information about who, what, were, or when the incident occurred because of confidentiality. They told me I would have to pay the towing and storage fee to recover my car from the impound. So I left and went to the impound paid $218.00 to discover that my vehicle had been totaled. So I had it towed to my house where I called the insurance company to report this. After I reported this incident they took a recorded statement and gave me a claim number. I waited for 2days for my adjuster to call me back and he never did. about 2 weeks later my adjuster calls and leaves me a message saying he needed another recorded statement and to call him back. I call back and got his voice mail. I spoke to one of his colleagues and they said they would send him and his manager a memo to call me back..well that never happened. 1 week after that I get a packet in the mail asking for my cell phone records, keys to the vehicle, and a notarized affidavit. I sent these things back and then a detective from the insurance company calls me and said there were red flags and he needed to get a video recorded statement. I agreed and went to give the statement. A few days later a detective from the police department where my car was recovered from calls me and tells me that my youngest son's father was with some friends at a nightclub were a drive-by shooting occurred and my son's father wasn't shot but the young man he was with was and as a result of them trying to escape the scene my car was crashed. As they arrived to the scene and asked questions about what happened my son's father would not admit he was driving the vehicle, and because they didn't actually see him driving or pull him over they could not prosecute. The detective asked me did I know anything about this incident and I replied hell no! The night of the incident my son's father had came to my house around 3am but never mentioned anything of course because he knows I would have tried to kill him. He also knows I would have been pissed because I never let him drive my car for the 3 years that I have known him, he has never had a license. She ask me was it ok to list him as a suspect and I told her Yes! I let her know that he did not have permission to drive my car under any circumstances. The very next day the detective from the insurance company called me and ask me what was my son's father name and what where the numbers that where called on my cell phone records. He asked why did he call me at 2:54am, I explained he wanted to let me know he was on his way over which wasn't out of the ordinary for him to do. So then the detective tells me my story stinks and I need to withdraw my claim because on my interview I didn't disclose that my boyfriend had come to my house. I told him why did I need to disclose who was sleeping in my bed if it had nothing to do with my car. I mean we know now he had something to do with it but I didn't know then. He told me the police detective also had the keys to my car which was a lie. It clearly states on the impound record that they had no keys. I told him he could arrest him for GTA for all I care. My car was stolen and no matter who stole it I'm the victim and of course I want my car covered. I live in California and started new health insurance with Blue Shield on January 1, 2014. But they are awful. Even though I not only applied with them, I was accepted by them, I paid the January premium back in December, and they have already covered two of my prescriptions. Month of Appreciation, Day 14

Yes, in part because I’m procrastinating. Sue me.

I think this one is going to brazenly commit to a cliche, but sometimes cliches are born in truth. As this set of text posts are meant to reflect people who’ve had an impact on the person I am and will go on to become, and given that family are a tricky topic as my perspective now is very different to what it once was, having spoken at length mostly about friends, and just once with the impacts of a problematic ex, I figure it’s time to talk about teachers.

I think most people can relate to this, and anyone who cant, my heart goes out to you, but most people can probably look back on their youth, their time in high school, or college, and single out a teacher who actually honestly properly made a difference. I was doubly blessed, as I had three or four teachers I could sing the praises of for different reasons, but I’m gonna focus on two - my AS English tutors. 

Now, I went to a sixth form, I had been taught by both of these teachers before my AS year, one as an English tutor in year 9, which was NOT an enjoyable class - her no nonsense attitude somewhat clashed with youthful nonsense. The other was my form tutor in year 11, meaning mostly that she had to remind me daily that my uniform was a mess.  Origins unimportant, mostly, the only other bit of context, I was fucking GOOD at English. Lit or lang, didnt matter, I was an avid reader, I could last minute a full marks essay, and the english department as a whole knew who I was. 

So these two teachers at AS level. There was a big difference, between years 11 and 12. Firstly, class sizes dropped from 30 ish to 10 ish. Secondly, instead of 30 petulant 15 year olds in school uniforms wanting to escape and go to lunch, it was 10 16 year olds who had chosen the module intentionally, that wanted to escape and go to lunch. The teacher/student divide was less pronounced, the workload took a degree of competence for granted, and the source material was 50% closer to interesting.

I’m gonna use first names, dunno, it feels wrong naming them in full, or using “Mrs ___” like I’m still a child.

Kirsty and Charlotte were their names. Both adult ass women who really goddamn knew how to do their jobs.

Kirsty first up, she was the kind of teacher who can really petrify a class. If a teacher gains respect by being loved or feared, holy damn this lady had mastered the latter. She was the kind of teacher you can imagine being sent to deal with a prison riot, in that classroom, she was god, and analysis of poetry was her divine message. The class meanwhile would dutifully listen and take notes, doing near anything to escape her scrutiny over their own work.  She was wasted on that class. I dont say this with any arrogance, it’s to the credit of her skill as a teacher that I can boast this, I was the exception. This was the teacher that taught me WHY I’m good at English lit - English lit is debate in pure form, the truth of the authors’ intentions do not matter, all that matters is your capacity to logically argue the point you’ve decided to make. And oh my, debate is what I did. For a full year, every lesson - where suitable - was a debate. Once the rest of the class had contributed what little she could force from them, my opinion was always welcomed, and I would come ready to defend it, I would put in the work because goddamn I wanted to win. I wont give any specific cases, they’re not the point even if I do still have two or three I remember with pride. The point was, for the first time in my life, little 16 year old me flexed the muscles of that big stupid brain, stepped into the ring as an academic, not just a student, and pulled every goddamn trick I could handle to interpret the text *my* way, to form a distinct point of view, and fight, tooth and nail to defend it. She would actively contradict my points, with text backed arguments of her own, not to tell me that I was wrong, but to force me to push further, to make me dance across whichever text was in question and read deeper than I had before, abandoning my well made plans and thinking on my feet. She made me love English Lit in that one year, simply by treating me as an equal, treating me as an OPPONENT, and challenging me to be better. Not only that, she found out that my GCSE English Language paper only got an A, and without seeing it demanded that the school have it remarked nearly a year later, long after I’d forgotten about it. It then got an A*. That was cool I guess. I still miss English Lit. I might start a book club.

The other, Charlotte, was my goddamn guardian angel throughout 6th form, not just AS. Firstly, as an English teacher, whilst less competitive, she was every inch as good a teacher for bringing out quality in my work. She wouldn’t push me as hard over a classroom debate, but if I handed in work that wasn’t every inch the quality it could be, she would chase it. She had an unrestricted faith in my capacity to succeed, and she wouldn’t accept less. For two years, any time I needed some extra advice, guidance or help, she would be there, without a doubt. She would give guidance on coursework that had nothing to do with her.  Even when teachers in other subjects gave me trouble (AS Physics), she would step in and resolve it. She spoke to me like an adult, reasoned with me about my future, understood the strings she’d need to pull to get me to perform (usually pride, ngl) and talked me into working harder. (My Physics teacher meanwhile lied about my grades to try and scare me into working. This very didnt work, and I dropped physics pretty much on his account. Some grudges last.)  Though Kirsty got me to love English Lit, Charlotte basically carried my stupid ass through my Alevels, by knowing when to push me, and how hard.  Me and another of her students actually caught up with her a few times after uni started. I’ve not done that in years. I should do that again. The point is, those two teachers set me on a course. I honestly don’t believe I’d be the same man I am today without those two women turning me from the child I was in year 11, intelligent almost by accident, lazy and unfocused, into an essay-excellent, sharp and critical minded, debate focused uni applicant, who went on to coast his way through a philosophy degree, for some fuck knows what reason.
