Kiss you Forever
Prompt: “I can kiss you forever,” Character B murmurs. “Yeah?” Character A says, laughing a little, only to stop when Character B leans in and presses a kiss against their cheek. “Yeah,” Character B says, “Yeah, I can. You think I’m lying?” with Kirby Dach
Tumblr media
Seeing Kirby get pushed in to Blackhawks bench made you audibly gasp and you knew from the way he fell into it and how when he got up and wasn't putting weight on his right leg it was bad. You also knew it had to be bad with the way Arber, Juraj and Cole looked up at you briefly with saddened faces it was bad.
Usually when Kirby took a bad hit or whenever anything happened and he needed medical attention you immediately followed him to the medical room ,but you were kinda in shock so you didn't move and just waited until someone came and got you or Kirby sent you a text.
The other wags were worried about you, you completely zoned out on the replay they showed. " hey y/n why don't you go and see him" one of them said " I'll just wait until he needs me" you responded with .
Finally you had enough waiting and decided to go and see Kirby, just as you started gathering your belonging you heard the announcer confirm that Kirby wouldn't be returning to the game and you moved faster. The other wags sent you sad smiles.
You arrived to the medical room the door was closed but you immediately heard Kirby moaning in pain on the other side and felt bad for him. Should you have came down sooner to see him. Did he want to see you as he is in the most excruciating pain he's been in. So many thoughts ran through your head.
As you started to zone out again the doors open and you went in to finally see Kirby and you run to him carefully not to hit his leg or put too much force on him while he's in pain.
" Kirb are you ok" you asked " yea baby im ok " he started to say he then looked at his right legs and said " I mean as ok as I can considering" as he motioned towards his leg. " so what they say about your leg ?" " I don't know yet I have to go to the Emergency Room to get X-Rays to see exactly what's wrong , all I know is it hurts like a fucking bitch" he says trying to joke but you can tell he's doing it for show and for your sake .
You see one of the trainers bring Kirby his stuff and say " the cars ready for you man im ready when you are" "ok here I come " Kirby responds . " I gotta go baby we're going to the ER now". " Oh do you want me to-" " No its ok I'll meet you at home Cole will drive me" Kirby says cutting me off. It makes me kind of upset and sad but I shrug it off and remember he's in pain so he probably just wants to be alone and figure out what's going on with his leg and the future of this season and career.
"Ok I love you " I say kissing him with just the right amount of passion that says " im worried about you and I know you're scared but im here" but not so much that it makes the staff around us uncomfortable. " I love you too so much " he responds before handing me his car keys to drive back to our apartment since he drove us to the stadium. " text me updates when you can please" " I will" he responds.
When I got home I sat my things down and sat on the couch for at least an hour and half staring at my phone . Then I got up and distracted myself with a hot shower and ordered from Kirbys favorite pizza place so he can have it when he eventually gets home and if he's hungry.
It's about 4 hours later when I get a text from Kirby saying him and Cole were on the way back home. I was in our living room watching reruns of SpongeBob to get my mind off how long it was taking for any kind of updates . Eventually I hear our garage door open and close and smile and think " finally he's home" . I greet Kirby and Cole at the garage door entrance to our apartment , Kirby is leaning all his weight onto Cole which is a funny sign considering the height difference.
"Wow Cole that's some real hockey strength you've got there" you said as you laughed. "Bullshit" Kirby screamed , you Cole laughed . " Bullshit you say as im holding you up I'll toss you on the ground right here and leave your ass there" You and Cole laughed even harder as Cole helped Kirby to the kitchen . "Are you hungry babe", "starving" Kirby replied. " well lucky for you I ordered your favorite pizza". " Cole you're welcomed to some as well" "Thanks y/n but im good "
Thirty minutes after Cole left and you and Kirby finished eating you guys made your way upstairs to your room with you helping Kirby up the stairs . You also helped him shower and get changed for bed before getting yourself ready for bed as well.
As you turn off all the lights in the bedroom the only light coming from the moon you pull the blankets back on your side and climb in next to Kirby who is looking all snuggly and cuddly .
"Hi" he says with a lovesick look on his face as he looks at you . "Hi you" you respond returning the same look . " I know you don't want to talk about anything right now but just know im here whenever you're ready" .
Kirby just leans in and kisses you with so much passion that you feel his love through the kiss. " I can kiss you forever" he says " Yeah?" you say laughing a little only stopping when Kirby leans in and presses a kiss against your cheek. " Yeah I can . You think im lying " he says.
" I don't know I think I need more evidence " you say . " HA HA HA" he responds while smirking then his face turns serious . " Thank you so much for today baby" " Kirbs I didn't really do anything " " Probably to you but seeing you hold it together kept me sane while figuring things out , and I know it couldn't have been easy seeing me like that so thank you baby I love you so much" " I love you too Kirbs" you say as you kiss him one last time , before he kisses your head as you both fall asleep from the crazy turn of events.

Nervous Regrets - Tyler Seguin - Part 10
Word Count: 3468
POV: Tyler
Warning: Cursing, but then you probably know that by now.
Notes: Alright, I hope this doesn’t disappoint anyone. I know I left you with a cliffhanger in Part 9. I honestly went a couple different ways with this one, and finally decided to go with this. Let me know what you guys think. Peace, Love and Hugs to all!!!!
Tumblr media
Morning dawned and with it, it brought a renewed sense of hope. The seller of your dream home had accepted your offer finally; excitedly you shared the news with (Y/N). It was if all the pieces were finally falling together in your life; new home, new baby and the love of your life by your side. You were sitting on top of the world and nothing could bring you down; especially when you learned that (Y/N)’s parents had done a complete turnaround. Knowing how important family was to her; you knew that she would want and need their support in the months to come. There were still fences that needed to be mended there on your end; but with time you hoped that you could restore the bond that was once there.
Blissfully you started your usual away game day routine; a quick workout, breakfast with the team and then morning skate all went better now that you had the woman of your dreams back in your life. Breezing by like a strong wind off the ocean; you lost track of where the day went. That was until you realized it was time to get ready and head down to travel to the arena. Checking your phone, you made sure it was charged; thinking that possibly something was wrong with it now that you noticed the time. It wasn’t like (Y/N) to forget to call you, quite the opposite in fact; recently you’d fallen back into the old habit of talking a few times a day. Though you knew she would be busy with her family today.
“What’s up Segs?” The concerned look on your face must have had Jamie questioning things.
“Probably nothing, I just haven’t heard from (Y/N) today.” Shrugging, you tried to make light of it.
“I wouldn’t sweat it man, she’s probably just busy or something. Didn’t you say her family was getting together today?” Taking his voice down to a whisper, he added, “They’re probably still talking about the baby and everything. It’s pretty big news all things considered.”
Jamie was right, you were sure that the baby was a main topic of conversation. “I’m sure you’re right. She probably just lost track of time. I’ll give her a call on the way there.” Grabbing your usual seat, you took out your phone and called (Y/N); five rings later you were listening to her voicemail. “Hey babe, it’s just me. I’m sure you’re busy or something. We’re just heading to the arena now. Give me a call when you can. Love you.”
Turning to Jamie you two discussed strategy for your game against the Blackhawks; before you knew it, the bus pulled into the arena. Hitting the last step your phone rang, an unknown number popping up on the screen; hesitantly you answered it. “Hello”
 “Hey Ty.”
“Hey babe, did you lose your phone or something? I almost didn’t answer this.”
 “Oh right, um
Is Jamie there? I need to ask him something really quick.”
Something was off, you could tell right away. “Yeah he’s here, but
”
You tried to say more, but she stopped you short. “It will be real quick, I promise.”
Brow furrowed, you handed the phone to Jamie as you continued inside. “She wants to talk to you.”
Giving you a look of confusion, Jamie took the phone. “Hey (Y/N), what’s up?” There was a lengthy pause. “yeah
..ok
..are you sure?....I understand, but
.I will
I promise.” He handed you back the phone then; the look on his face didn’t reassure you by any means.
“Babe what’s going on? Why did you need to talk to Jamie?”
You could hear her falter. “Ok
so I need you to know that both the baby and I are ok, alright?” Blood drained out of your body, why was she starting off like that; you stood immobile, not being able to move even one muscle. Silence made her continue, “There was an accident. I’m in the hospital, they want me to stay overnight, but the doctor assured me that the baby is fine. He’s just being cautious.”
A cold sweat broke out across your brow; leaning against the wall, you tried to absorb the words she just spoken. “What
what happened?” Jamie squeezed your shoulder in support.
“Sean and I ran to the store to get something. We were at a traffic light and I don’t know this car just came out of nowhere through the red light. We didn’t have time to react; I tried to protect the baby as much as I could. I don’t exactly know what happened; I hit my head and the next thing I knew I was being woken up by the paramedics.”
Bile rose in the back of your throat, and you felt as if you couldn’t breathe; trying to speak but no words would come out. Slowly you sank to the floor, head between your knees; inhaling deeply, you tried again. Yet still nothing came out. “Tyler, we’re ok. They have me hooked up to a fetal monitor and they’ve done a sonogram. The baby is fine. Ty, do you hear me? We’re both ok.”
Blinking hard you tried to calm your racing heart; as the ringing in your ears softened a few decibels, you became aware of your surroundings. Jamie was standing off to the side, whispering to Monty. Turning you spoke to them, instead of the phone; “I’m not playing. I need a car, now.”
 “Tyler
.Tyler
.Tyler Paul Seguin.” (Y/N)’s voice permeated through the fog in your brain. You must have made some noise for she continued, knowing she had your attention. “You are not leaving that arena; do you hear me? Your ass better be out on that ice come game time.”
“Jesus (Y/N), how am I suppose to play, when you’re lying in a hospital? It’s not fucking happening; I can’t do it. I need to be with you and the baby.” How were you suppose to go out on the dam ice and not think about her or the baby; it was incomprehensible.
“Tyler, my parents are on their way; Sean is here with me. There’s absolutely nothing you can do here. Besides by the time you could get a flight here, they could discharge me. The only reason I’m telling you now, is because I don’t want any secrets between us, ever. Don’t make me regret that decision.”
“Babe, would you listen to me for a second. I won’t be able to play not knowing what’s going on with you. I’ll be useless out there. Trust me they don’t want me to play.” This said loud enough so that both Monty and Jamie could hear.
“I’ll text you updates and you can check your phone at the end of each period. Or better yet, give your phone to one of the trainers and they can relay the messages to you.”
(Y/N) had an answer at every turn for you; but your stubborn nature would win out this time. “And what if something does happen. I should be there. I’m going to be there. If I could just find someone to get me a damn car to get to the airport. Fuck it, I’ll take a cab.” Hauling yourself off the floor, you started to move; only to be blocked by Jamie. “Move.” This said to your best friend and captain.
“Tyler, babe can you please just listen to me.”  Continuing to stare daggers at Jamie, mentally willing him to get the hell out of your way; or else you’d pulverize him. “I knew you would want to go. Which is why I asked Jamie to make you stay. He’s only doing what I asked him to; don’t be mad at him.” The pleading tone in her voice, had you softening, but only slightly. “I don’t know how many times I can say this; the baby and I are fine. The doctor mainly has me staying because of the concussion. He’s just monitoring the baby, since I’ll be here. Wait, hold on; he’s coming in right now.” She paused, speaking to the doctor, before coming back to you; “Ty, this is Dr. Frost; he wants to speak with you.”
“Mr. Seguin, I just want to reassure you that both Ms. (Y/LN) and the baby are doing fine. Had she not, sustained her head injuries, I would be sending her home shortly, but I’d like to observe her overnight for precautionary measures only. There were no abdominal or pelvic injuries sustained; so I don’t anticipate anything out of the ordinary here and she’ll probably be discharged in the morning. Do you have any questions for me?”
“How severe are her head injuries?” you were acutely aware of what a concussion could do to someone, given your profession.
“Ms. (Y/LN) sustained a level three concussion. According to the paramedics she was unconscious for several minutes. We’ve done an MRI; which did not show any bleeding on the brain. Given the severity; I would like her to take it easy for the next week or more, so no driving, lifting or work.  I’m recommending she follow up with her OB/GYN this week.” Level three, that was no concussion protocol, kick you out of the game in a second level; her head had to be throbbing. “Mr. Seguin, there’s nothing you can do here tonight. It would be my recommendation to let Ms. (Y/LN) get some rest and you come see her in the morning.”
“I understand, thank you for your time doctor.”
There was a brief pause before you hear (Y/N)’s voice again; “Ty can I call you back after the doctor examines me?”
 “Yeah of course.”
“Promise me you’ll stay right where you are.”
“I promise.” After speaking to the doctor, you didn’t want to cause her anymore stress; as her brain was probably having a hard time processing everything.
 “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Sliding the phone into you suit pocket; you closed your eyes trying to process the last several minutes.
“You ok man?” Opening your eyes, you saw Jamie hadn’t moved from your side; Monty a short distance behind him on the phone.
“I don’t know what to do? She wants me to stay here, but, how can I? God, I could’ve lost them both.” You choked back the tears threatening to spill over.
“But you didn’t Seggy. They are both ok. She told you that, hell she told me that. What do you think will help her right at this moment?”
“I don’t know Chubbs, she keeps telling me to play.”
“Then play, and then we’ll get you on the first plane to her. I swear it.”
Monty came forward then, overhearing the conversation between his players. “Tyler, I have someone working on getting you a plane; just say the word on when you want it to leave. Look I understand if you have to go now; the team will be fine.”
“Can you have it ready for the moment after the game is over? Like no interviews, none of the bullshit?”
“There will be a car waiting for you the minute you’re done; and I promise no bullshit. Take it all out on the ice; all those emotions you feel right now just put it out there. Then go be with your girl.”
 “Thanks Monty.”
Jamie grabbed you by the shoulders, “We’re all here for you man. We got your back.”
“I’ll need someone to go get my stuff from the hotel.”
“It’ll be in the car, ready for you.” It was as though Monty anticipated what you would say.
“Alright, let’s go get ready. The sooner we get started the sooner I can see (Y/N). Oh, Monty, can I give someone my phone in case she needs me.”
 “Whatever you need Segs.”
With that you headed to the locker room, tension hung in the air; the rest of the team knowing something was wrong but not exactly what it was. These things happened from time to time, a wife would go into labor, a parent or grandparent would pass away; the team would rally all around each other showing their support. Jamie took control just as a good captain would, “All right guys, Segs is going through a tough time tonight. We need to get out there and help him kick some ass.”  A few guys came up and patted you on the back, no one really questioning what you were going through. You were just starting to gear up when the phone rang. This time it was (Y/N)’s face popping up on the screen; walking out of the locker room you found a secluded spot.
“Hey baby girl, how you doing?” speaking to her more in hushed tones now that you knew how serious her concussion was.
“The same. Nothing’s changed, which is good news. You’re still at the arena?” “Yes, I’m still here. I’m going to play the game and then head straight to you. No arguments on that part.”
 “Ok, I won’t argue.”
 “How’s Sean?”
“He’s ok, a few cuts and bruises; but overall he’s good. They discharged him, but he won’t leave. He feels horrible about the accident, even though it wasn’t his fault.” While you were certain it wasn’t his fault you understood where his guilt was coming from; you were experiencing it yourself not being able to be with her. “Oh and my car is done for. I’ll need to get in touch with the guy’s insurance company tomorrow.”
“Babe, I’ll handle that when I get there. You don’t need to do anything, but rest. And don’t watch the game, it will just make your head hurt worse.”
A small chuckle, had her wincing in pain. “Well then I’ll give that job to Sean, so he can feel useful.”
“Make sure the lights are off too. It will help with the pain. What did they give you?”
“I refused anything they offered but Tylenol. I don’t want to harm the baby.”
God her brain must feel like it’s going to split in two; you’d dealt with a concussion or two, and knew how painful they could be. Those times you were always prescribed something to help alleviate the symptoms; you knew a measly couple of Tylenol wouldn’t begin to touch anything she was feeling. “Are you sure you don’t want something else? I’m sure they wouldn’t give you anything that would harm the baby.”
“It’s ok Ty. I’ll be fine. I can handle it.”
“Alright babe, if you say so. I’m gonna let you rest ok. Promise me you’ll text or call me if anything changes at all.”
“I will. I’ll keep you updated, but everything is going to be fine. You just concentrate on the game.”
Shaking your head, knowing that it would be impossible to focus solely on hockey; you answered, “I’ll do my best. Don’t worry about me, you just focus on getting better. I’ll see you soon. I love you (Y/N).”
“I love you too, Tyler,” with that she hung up the phone. Head down, you mentally tried to prepare yourself to play sixty minutes of hockey; yet thoughts of (Y/N) lying in a hospital bed crept into your mind. Still not being able to convince yourself you could play this game; you walked back into the locker room. A few of the guys were still prepping, some had wandered out into the halls to stretch or hit the soccer ball around.
Bishop wandered over by you, setting heavily on the bench beside you. “Hey man, don’t get mad, but Jamie filled me in on what’s going on. He only thought I could help out; I won’t say a word to anyone.” Glancing over you looked at the goalie; seeking words of advice. “I know it’s hard. There were times I felt so helpless when Andrea was pregnant; obviously nothing like you’re going through at the moment, but there were times, when she’d be cramping or had braxton hicks. Every time she’d tell me she was fine and that it was ok to go; which was tough to do; but she was always honest with me. I’m sure (Y/N) is doing the same with you now. If she says she’s fine, Seggy, trust her, she is. Women are much stronger than we give them credit for. If you needed to be there, she’d tell you; trust me. Just go out there, and put all that frustration and guilt into the game.”
“Thanks, Bish,” knowing that he was probably right, if (Y/N) thought something was wrong, she would’ve told you.  It would still be hard, but it was really only three hours and then you’d be on your way to her.
“Congratulations, man; being is a dad is the best job there is.”
Looking over you smiled at your teammate; it was the first time you’d done that since finding out about the accident. “Thanks, I can’t wait to find out. “ With that you both finished prepping for the game; it was literally the longest three hours of your life. While the team still fell to the Blackhawks, you were able to add an assist to Rads goal in the first period. True to her word (Y/N) did send you updates, that nothing had changed with hers or the baby’s condition; they were still doing well.
Heading straight to the locker room after the game; you stripped your gear off and showered as quickly as possible. Monty had a car with your luggage waiting, just as he promised. As you made your way to the airport, you contacted a service to have a car waiting for you so you could go to the hospital. Trying to sleep on the two hour flight, proved futile; nervous energy ran through your veins. As the plane touched down you grabbed your bag and headed to the car; not waiting for assistance. Striding into the hospital, bags in hand; you scanned the area searching for the inpatient rooms.
Confusion must have been written on your face, for the receptionist asked if she could assist you. Pointing you in the correct direction, you strode to the bank of elevators; which seemed to take an eternity. Finally reaching the correct floor, you made your way to the room (Y/N) had text she was in; receiving numerous stares from the on-duty nurses. The door was closed and the lights were off; but then most of them were, as it was two in the morning. Slowly you crept inside, careful to not wake up (Y/N). The dim light from the hallway, as well as the monitors she was hooked up to provided enough light for you to see her sleeping form. Discarding your bags in the corner, you spied a chair pulled up beside the bed and made your way to it; gently lifting her hand so you could hold it.
Softly you caressed your thumb across her knuckles, careful not to wake her; yet needing to feel her warm skin on yours. You sat there staring at her for several minutes; before her eyes fluttered open. Groggy from sleep, her voice whispered, “Tyler, is that you?”
“Yeah babe, I’m here. Go back to sleep.”
 “Mmmm
.. I’m ok. What time is it?”
“Just a bit after two in the morning. How are you feeling?”
“Good. They come in every so often and check my vitals as well as check the baby, but they took the fetal monitor off a little bit ago. The doctor said everything was fine with the baby.” Breathing a sigh of relief that at least one of them was doing better at this point; you moved your hand and ran it soothingly over her head. You could feel the large lump from where it had struck the vehicle.
“That’s good news. How’s the head?”
Smiling bravely, she answered. “It’s not too bad. Definitely feels better than it did before.”
“Good babe, now go back to sleep. We can talk later.” You continued to stroke her hair, hoping to lull her back to slumber.
 “Tyler
can you lay with me and just hold me?”
Tears formed in your eyes and your heart skipped a beat at the request; it was the only thing that you’d wanted to do from the moment you’d found out about the incident. Sliding off your suit coat and removing your shoes; you crawled in the small hospital bed and embraced the woman you loved. “Better?”
 “Mmmm
much.”
Pressing a gentle kiss on her lips, you told her. “Now get some rest.”
Eyes closing, a small smile played across the lips you’d just kissed. “I love you.”
“I love you too baby.” Inhaling her scent, you shut your own eyes and finally let yourself relax. Everything would be fine now that you were here and (Y/N) was in your arms.

The Legend
Dear @youcantdothatpod
Hello, Hockey Coven, it is I, one of the two responsible for the Pierre-Édouard Bellemare DreamBoat Manifesto of old, penning this under my normal Tumblr journal instead of the hockey one for no good reason, and I come to you, with respect, and with full knowledge of certain coven members love of Russian players (though this one is not a Siberian) to ask for either a history lesson or dream boat nomination for my guy - for having an interesting life, to say the least. He is my favorite Russian player. Yes, possibly even over Ovi.
And yet he never made the NHL.
Oh. My. GOD. some listeners must be thinking at this point. Why even BOTHER with this guy??? he’s not in the fucking NHL!
(And can I just say, in this case, we must never be the Bettmans of the hockey world, who was bloated with hubris thinking to bring hockey like a Messiah to the unenlightened Asian continent a few years back [ha ha fuck off, they’ve had hockey here as long as the NHL has existed? I live in Japan btw] and we must not think that the NHL is the end-all-be-all of hockey aspiration. It wasn’t. It isn’t. Times were different. There wasn’t even a KHL at the time our story begins.)
I bring him to your attention because he is THE BEST.
Tumblr media
His story begins in the Siberian IHL, passing a pretty tough try-out as a kid to start playing for the Red Army team, CSKA Moscow.
I feel like I ought not throw in all his info here? Maybe just a few highlights? And some comments. Ok who am I kidding it will get long.
Here: Vladislav Tretiak.
Tumblr media
Vladislav Aleksandrovich Tretiak, goalie, current president of the IIHFR.
He won a lot of shit. I’ll just link the Wiki here - it’s a list.
Tumblr media
He looks kinda like Spock, but in the best red-blooded ways, not that I would ever judge anyone for wanting to get freaky with a green-blooded half-alien. His goalie training looks a lot like cossack dance.
(MUTE THIS VIDEO THO)
youtube
There’s some other worse quality vids of him doing similar and playing with his son, so. There’s that. Skip ahead to the tennis ball part.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrfOsCVakvs
He started hockey kinda late, at age 11.
And Canadian hockeys LOVED him. *See below pic of jersey swap with Wayne Gretzky for proof.
Tumblr media
Really, you gasp. Say it ain’t so! Impossible!!!
Truth.
How did the so-called hockey world (which of course was based in NA according to old boring hockey men) discover this Dumbo-eared wunderkind? The 1972 Summit Series.
Tumblr media
(Yes, he grew his hair out and covered the mudflaps, and it was MUCH BETTER, sorry Vladdy.)
Tumblr media
‘Ho hum,’ said the Canadians, ‘Russia thinks they are good at hockey, how ‘bout we have the Summit Series and quash their pretensions? That gold medal in Sapporo? a FLUKE. Ha ha, look at their goalie, this will be a cakewalk, he let in EIGHT GOALS in this game we just saw, oh well, let’s go have a beer and light up a dart, eh, boys? Eight games, pfft. We’ll sweep them.’
Joke was on them - Vladdy or Vladik was gettiing married the next day and weirdly? Couldn’t concentrate.
Summit Series ended up with one tie, 3 Russian wins and 4 Canadian, with the Canadians playing their dirty rough style, and the Russians their smooth, machine-cog style. That series was a gongshow of biased refereeing, Russian goal judges not turning on goals lights, and teams leaving the bench to have Canadian or Russian tantrums. Actual ankle-breaking occured.
Canadians had two goalies. Russian had one. He was 20. My boy. He KILLED it. And to say the Canadians were pretty horned about about this alien cheekboned man-child after expected a blow-out? MASSIVE understatement, HUGELY horny. As they should have been. Ken Dryden LOVED him. Jacques Plante himself, maybe feeling sorry for the kid, came and talked to him before the tournament started and let him know how different players would try to score. ‘A big help,’ Vladdy said. ‘I don’t know why he did that.’  LOTS of players were in awe. Canada was turned upside, Toronto became Tijuana and nothing was ever the same. The Interest in Russian Players was, officially, a Thing. (Kharlamov was a big part of the interest but that’s a whole ‘nother story.)
Tumblr media
The horniness was, in fact, so uncontainable that several NHL teams expressed an interest, and one team was bold enough to draft him in 1983, when he was the ripe age of 31, which at the time was not TOTALLY hockey-old for goalies and players like it is now. Yes, the Habs. Consider that 3 years later rookie Patrick Roy backstopped the Canadiens to several Stanley Cups, and imagine what they could have been even earlier, with Tretiak. HOooooO.  Serge Savard hit up Moscow four times during the winter of ‘84 to try and secure his release.
Russian wouldn’t let him go, of course. Tretiak was a only lieutenant-colonel in the Soviet army, and not playing the high level hockey he had previously, and thusly COULD be replaced in the system. Soviet officials ultimately vetoed a transfer. “Oooh his dad was a major, how can we let this son of a distinguished man go and play HOCKEY, it’s a disGRACE!” Or at least that’s what we were told. Okay, Jan.
Tumblr media
He quit playing at age 32. Thirty fucking two!!!  He’d done his 4th Olympics in a row by this point in 1984, and had the honour of carrying the flag for his nation, though he said it was probably because no one else had done 4 Olympics in a row. He wanted to spend more time with his family, and asked Tikhonov, coach of the national team and CSKA to let him have, ya know. Quality family time. (You’ll remember this douche from previous Russia Hockey Stories.) Tikhonov said, no, you live at the compound like everyone else for 11 months of the year. Ah ha ha.
Roll back a few years, for a grudge. Tretiak, if you’ll recall from the Miracle on Ice, was pulled from the game against the Americans by ol’ Tikky after letting in ONE (1) goal in the first period. All the Russians knew, but would never say until much much later, what a massive mistake that was - and you know the Miracle story anyway. Tretiak said himself it was a mistake, and he wouldn’t have lost the game.
So, all things considered, in spite of having loads of playing life left in those kicky legs, Tretiak noped out and retired, for the reason of  being denied time with his family. And not getting to go abroad to play, which was probably a bitter pill and so quitting while he was still useful was a good Fuck You to the officials who used him up like a tissue playing hockey for his team and country. And of course, he was exhausted. At age 32.  "I'd played fifteen years with the Army Club and the National Team without a break. Backup goalies came and went, as did three generations of forwards and defensemen, but through four Olympic Games, all the important ones with the professionals, all the World Championships, all the Izvestia tournaments, it was I who played in the net."
Tumblr media
Frankly, he should have just defected like others did later. Sent his family to watch him in a tournament and done a Sound-of-Music-esque Von Tretiak escape out the Zamboni exit, over the mountains and far away.
Tumblr media
He would have been the first if he had. One of the most famous players in Russia, leaving for a career in the corrupt West. I’m glad he at least thought about it a little, even if it never happened. God, that would have been great. I’m glad that the NHL were able to pull their xenophobic heads from their asses enough to know greatness, and to want that brilliance shining on their teams.
But really, in the end, the man done him dirty. “In spite of aggressive discussions with Soviet authorities, Canadiens' general manager Serge Savard was unable to secure Tretiak's release for Montreal. "I would have loved to play in the Forum," Tretiak admits. "I was hoping to one day play in the NHL. I would have liked to do it even for just one season. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. I regret not having the chance." “
Still, the NHL and hockey in NA didn’t forget him. There were laurels left to be given.
He was the first Russian to be inducted into the HHoF, and the first to be entered without ever having played in the NHL.
Was he done with hockey? Heck no. Remember when I said Canadians loved him? It may have been mentioned a time or five.
In 1988, hockey royalty got married - Wayne Gretzky and Janet Jones. Befitting royalty, her dress cost $40,000, and gifts filled three rooms of the hotel. Notably, amongst them was a gold swan from a certain Soviet goalie Vladislav Tretiak. Why??? Swans are good luck, said Vladdy. They mate for life. And lo, the couple is still together.
In 1990, Mike Keenan hired him to be a goalie coach for the Blackhawks, and was (again) so turned on by his mastery that he suggested the 38 year could still play in the NHL? Vladik laughed and said no, but coaching was the next best thing. He worked with the best - Belfour, Hasek, Thibault, and you’ll be shocked that loads of tendies wear his #20 in tribute. He runs - or ran? website not updated in a while - the most challenging goalie school in NA in Toronto in summers.
He worked with the ‘Hawks until 2007, and then went on to be a pillar in Russian hockey leadership. Coach. Etc.
Tumblr media
He wrote a book, which was really what got me into Russian hockey - it was wild to me at the time when I read it in high school some (Cough cough) years ago, so alien. But it’s chock full of the stories you love. His first coach Tarasov, wanted him because he was ‘tall’ (6â€Č is tall in Russia???) and had ‘huge hands’ and reminded him of Jacques Plante. The book’s pretty frank about hockey history and the role ‘Miracle on Ice’ played into a kind of American propaganda, which is refreshing. He was politely horrified by seeing Canadian players smoking. His training was bonkers, and included tree-climbing at speed. The Russian team was always trying new stuff, and one time decided on sports psychology, which a teammate helpfully volunteered Vladik for, ‘He’s the most important player, he’s the last defence, work with him!’ (since no one else wanted to). The positive thinking mantras seemed to work as at the next practice they were amazed by his clean play and kicks. But lol, no, next game he got blown out, and was probably glad to send the sports shrink on the way.
And he was crushed  when his teammate, Valeri Kharlamov, with whom he played so long, died at the young age of 33 in a car accident. But Kharlamov is a guy for another section of Hockey Histories.
So. This dream boat.
Tumblr media
Ok. I know y’all prefer a defection story, and I think some listeners also? But. Here’s the thing. It’s sexy and romantic but also traumatic as fuck to ditch your country, your life in that political climate, to play the game. And dangerous,  shit man. 1983. U.S.S.R.!!! People still got disappeared! It was fine to treat players like garbage and lock them up for months in a compound and not let them see family! And I sometimes get the feeling that people consider the NHL the pinnacle, like, what a fool is Tretiak? who wouldn’t throw away everything to play NHL hockey? But that’s like, Bettman thinking, that the NHL is the best and perfect when we all know it’s fucking garbage, I know the current KHL has issues, SO MANY it would be a three hour podcast to talk about! So there’s no high ground, really. And in the end, Vladislav Tretiak made a choice that did good by himself, going on to a successful post-hockey career and the upper echelons of Russian hockey, and did well by his family, and of course, being patriotic is sexy, as anyone screeching at their team during the current World Cup of hockey knows. It’s okay that he stayed there. It’s fucking sexy NOT to defect, sometimes. Dude was a champion either way, his life is not a tragedy or lesser for not having played in the NHL and I really want people to know that.
"For me, it was all, and all of it is with me forever."
Yes, there is life and hockey beyond the NHL.
Tumblr media
And it’s beautiful.

Kiki’s Keys to the Chicago Blackhawks-Dallas Stars Game (03\23\2017)
#1. Have a better beginning to your game:  In the Blackhawks’ last 4 games, the beginning of their games have gotten off to somewhat of a quiet or slow start which (in the case of last night’s game against Vancouver) affected the outcome of the game. In order for the Blackhawks to have a better start to their games, they need to step out on the ice with energy, stay focused, stay visible (not invisible) during their time on the ice and maintain the momentum once they have it.
#2. Avoid getting too sluggish during the game: Like I mentioned in the first key, the Blackhawks have gotten off to a quiet or slow start during the first half ot their games, but sometimes, the Hawks have a tendency to get sluggish during their games which can affect what they do on the ice, what the other team might do and the potential outcome of the game.
The Hawks need to make sure they maintain their energy once they have it because if getting way too sluggish could lead to mistakes and those mistakes could cost them during the game.
#3. Don’t wait until the last minute to start scoring goals: In three out of the Blackhawks’ last four games, the Blackhawks either waited until the middle or end of the game to start scoring goals.
As I’ve mentioned a couple times before in my past keys, the Blackhawks need to try to get on the scoreboard as soon as they can and not wait until the last minute to start scoring because it won’t be long before the other team has or tries to get the lead when they get the chance.
#4. Continue to take advantage of the power play: In Wednesday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks, the power play for the Blackhawks did quite well, scoring two goals on the man advantage.
With the way the power play went for the Hawks in their last game, they need to continue to try to take advantage of their power play opportunities when they come along. With the Dallas Stars’ penalty kill percentage currently ranked dead last in the league, a power play goal could help boost the Blackhawks’ momentum if necessary.
#5. Be aware of the Stars: The Dallas Stars will be coming off a 1-0 shutout win against the San Jose Sharks. They are currently in 6th place in the Central Division of the NHL with a record of 29-33-10.
The last time the Blackhawks played against the Dallas Stars back in February, the Hawks won 5-3, making it the 4th win in a row against them this season. Tonight will be the last time in the regular season the Hawks and the Stars will play against each other.
In order for the Blackhawks to bounce back from their loss against Vancouver on Tuesday night, they need to start off their games with energy, get on the scoreboard as soon as possible, take advantage of their power play opportunities when they come along, stay out of the box and stay on their “A” game.
Here are some key Stars players to be aware of:
Tyler Seguin (who currently leads the team in points, goals & assists
Jamie Benn (who is second on the team in points, goals & assists)
Antoine Roussel (who has scored 3 goals in his last 5 games and has a total of 115 penalty minutes so far this season)
Brett Richie (who has scored 2 goals in his last 5 games)
Kari Lehtonen (who has gotten 18 wins, has a current record so far this season of 18-22-6, a goals against average of 2.89 and a save percentage of .903).
Updated News Just so you know, the Dallas Stars’ forward Antoine Roussel has side-lined with an upper body injury since the beginning of March which I did not know about until now, so do not expect him to be in the line-up for tonight's game. My apologies for the error.

r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 6: Tropical Depression Edition
/r/Hockey NHL Power Rankings Week Nov 4, 2019 - Nov 10, 2019Thank YouThank you to all of the volunteers doing the power rankings. Each ranker has their own system and have their own reasonings and analyis. It truly is a lot of work.RankersSpoilerOrganizersSpoilerVisualizationThe visualization contains historical data, so you can see how your team has done over time. Hopefully, we can run this for many years in hopes that we can see the rise and fall of teams by /r/hockey opinion. It automatically updates so feel free to bookmark. You can find it hereProcessHow does this work? Throughout the course of the week rankers are able to access an app that will allow them to rank teams. At the end of the period we calculate the average ranking for every team and collate all of the analysis provided by rankers. The app then generates a post that is first proofread and then posted to /r/hockey!Rankings (27/31 Rankers Reporting)Ranking (avg)TeamDeltaOverall RecordRecord This WeekComments1 (1.59)Washington Capitals113-2-32-0-0The boys are buzzin. The top line isn't slowing down and our shiny new second line of Vrana - Kuznetsov - Wilson is tearing up the weaker competition. MacLellan's new look bottom six is still giving teams fits with their mix of speed and size. The defense is the best it's been since Mike Green ran the PP. Samsonov is the prince that was promised. Aside from a surprise mid-season extension for Backstrom there really isn't anything more a humble Caps fan could hope for.2 (3.03)Boston Bruins-111-3-31-2-1Well, this is a slump. Nothing but sloppy, uninspired hockey this week from the Bruins. The fact that we beat the Penguins is a shocker. Lost a close game to the Habs, stunk against the Red Wings, and played 40 minutes of bad hockey against the Flyers after having 10 shots through 40 minutes. Bruins showed signs of life in the 3rd period against them but ultimately fell in the shootout. PS: Pasta, get good at penalty shots.3 (3.68)New York Islanders-12-3-12-0-1Despite the rough loss to the Penguins the point streak is still alive. All throughout the goal-tending has been fantastic by both Greiss and Varly. With Eberle now back we will have to see if he can recapture the magic he has with Barzal, which was missing at the start of this season. Even without Matt Martin, Cizikas and Clutterbuck combined to have an outstanding week. On defense, Adam Pelech is playing like a top d-man. Other teams and fans will hear more about him if he keeps it up, but for now he is one of the most underrated players around.4 (4.76)St. Louis Blues412-3-33-0-0The bad news is that the Blues really aren't playing the best hockey they're capable of. The good news is that we're still winning. Many close games but the duo of DP57 and ROR is dragging us to some wins, our D is stabalizing, and our goaltending is proving good enough to compete. Would like to see some depth pieces begin to contribute more, and the loss of Tarasenko is just beginning to set in, but at the end of the day we're leading the Western Conference and we can still definitely get better from here. There also might not be a more trusted ownership/GM combo in the League than Army and Stillman. It's a fun time to be a Blues fan.5 (6.74)Edmonton Oilers-12-5-22-1-16 (6.76)Colorado Avalanche110-5-22-1-0The Avs have awoken. It took about two weeks, but the Avs finally figured out chemistry against Nashville & Columbus. Bad News two new injuries this week, now with 6 players out with Grubauer the only one set to return soon. Sakic looks smart for acquiring all the depth this offseason. The new top line is fun, not as skilled, but no players work harder than Donskoi and Calvert and Mackinnon benefits from the chaos they create and they benefit from the chaos he creates. Francouz has been sufficient in Grubauer's absence but isn't really playing himself into a potential 1B role. Avs start a Western Canadian Road trip this week and look to keep the momentum from the last couple games. First up a big 4 point game in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Calder Watch: Makar had an insane week, with points in all three games a 3 point night and a 2 goal game with his first GWG. He is now at 17 points in 17 games which ties him for third in scoring amoung NHL dmen, Crazy!7 (9.82)Nashville Predators39-5-31-1-1I'm away from my computer this week so I'll keep this one to a single point: /u/dabz14, I'm a true believer after the Red Wings game this past week. That second period was brutal, and the Preds made sure I understood that by being on the other side of the brutality against the Avalanche.8 (10.26)Pittsburgh Penguins610-6-12-1-0Almost as soon as we got Malkin back, Crosby gets knocked out. Please start wrapping these players up in bubble wrap.9 (10.5)Carolina Hurricanes-59-7-10-3-0The lack of top tier star power is starting to show. Each of the last 4 games should have been winnable but they ended up not even being close.10 (11.53)Buffalo Sabres-49-6-20-2-0Three more games until we hit .500.11 (12.59)Vegas Golden Knights19-7-31-2-1Tough week for the Golden Knights going 1-2-1 on the road trip. Blown leads in the 3rd period has plagued the team lately and really needs to change.12 (12.91)Vancouver Canucks-39-6-30-3-1Ever since rushing to jump on the ill-conceived and somewhat forced "Team Like That marketing campaign, the Canucks have indeed become a team like that. The team like that has since lost 5 of their last 6, with their only win coming against a floundering Sharks team. Over this period the powerplay has lost some the luster shown earlier in the year, and Canucks fans must face the tough reality that a team (like that) might not win 70% of its games this year. The club remains competitive, but this string of losses should slide them down to the middle of the pack in our power rankings - the "playoff bubble" position most anticipated the team would inhabit at the start of the season.13 (13.41)Toronto Maple Leafs29-6-42-1-1The Leafs are a confusing team. The week started with a sloppy 3-1 win against the Kings on Tuesday which made it a two game winning streak, which was extended on a 2-1 OT win against the Golden Knights (Did you see Ceci's beautiful setup for Pacioretty!?), which was won by captain Tavares himself. Unfortunately that streak ended Saturday night, after the Flyers got shootout revenge, highlighted by Marner taking an awkward tumble. After trying to take another shift, he was sent to the dressing room and shut down for the game, and after an MRI, for four weeks. Looks like leaf fans are still gonna annoy r/hockey by saying this team still isn't fully healthy yet :). Is that an excuse for letting up 4 goals in the first against the Blackhawks? Oh it's the second half of a back-to-back. That excuse. Made the game close, but not close enough. Overall, another confusing week for leafs fans14 (13.5)Arizona Coyotes-19-6-21-2-115 (14.18)Calgary Flames110-7-32-0-1The Flames had a good week, getting 5 out of a possible 6 points. The team appears to have a completely different effort level when they are down in the third period, having multiple late goals to tie both Arizona and St. Louis, forcing overtime. If only they could play with the same sense of urgency at all times. Johnny Gaudreau continues a large slump. While he's still getting points, he doesn't look like himself and his turnovers and defensive game make him feel like a liability at times. The Flames have already played 20 games this year, so hopefully their schedule slowing down a bit will give them some time to solve a few issues.16 (15.18)Anaheim Ducks-59-8-10-2-0This season feels like a rerun. Looks like a losing home stand came 1 month earlier than last year. A poor effort against the oilers after 4 days off. Similarly poor effort against the wild. I don’t see the fight. I don’t see the ducks ready to start any game lately. Song of the week: Free fallin’ - Tom Petty and the heartbreakers17 (15.35)Tampa Bay Lightning28-5-22-0-0Hard to take a ton away from just a back to back against the same team, but I did like what I saw from the team. Got some depth scoring, so that was nice. 3/7 on the PP isn't too shabby, and killing off all 4 penalties is quite nice too. Very happy only seeing 4 PP's given up, seems Tampa decided they were just having no fun sitting in the box.18 (15.76)Montreal Canadiens-19-5-32-0-1This week the team made big strides in improving their penalty kill (albeit in large part to Price in the net). Victor Mete is making up for all the goals he didn’t score to start his career and it helping beat the Bruins makes it all the better. Ryan Poehling finally has first few games of the season but if all Julien is going to do is play him for 9 minutes a game I would rather see him getting more time in the AHL.19 (15.97)Philadelphia Flyers210-5-24-0-0Its been a very Fly week this week, not a Die week. Myers has been on fire since scoring his first of the season, Coots, Lindblom, and TK line is actual sex on ice, our goaltending is stabilizing, and we are making teams regret starting their backup against us. 3 games in 4 nights against teams in playoff spots, and having pulled a majority of the points from it means we are doing a good hockey. Giroux with an absolute slapper in the SO, Moose and Hart are being the tandem we need them to be, and the team responding well under AV means things are well. We may never go pointless in a game again. Also PROVY PLEASE JUST KEEP YOUR GAME SIMPLE YOU ARE TOO GOOD TO BE PLAYING AS POORLY AS YOU HAVE BEEN RECENTLY. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk pt.2. Praise Gritty20 (17.68)Winnipeg Jets-10-7-12-0-121 (19.47)Florida Panthers-38-4-51-1-1Panthers' games are absolutely crazy. 4th in GF/game and 4th most GA/game. Half their game have been to overtime...it's not good for my heart. Recap; decent game against the Caps. Good game against the Islanders, should have won but Greiss was fantastic. Good game against the Rangers, Monty was bad, but the team rallied to with it. The Panthers don't give up and that's great.22 (20.74)Dallas Stars-8-8-21-0-1Only two weeks this game. Big win over the Avalanche and a OT loss to the Jets. Standouts? Faksa, Bishop. Takeaways? We played great against the Avalanche, and the Jets loss was hard-fought A 1-1 record doesn't always spell improvement - and it's sure not as good as last week - but we're playing better than our first 10 games. That's what matters.23 (23.56)New York Rangers-7-6-22-1-1Just another week at the office for the New York Rangers. We opened the week by losing 6-2 to the Ottawa Senators. This one was tough and really showed how young this team is, but a game like this was necessary. Next, we bounced back against the Wings by winning solidly 5-1. The next day, we got to see vintage Hank against the Canes. Even though we got outshot 47-19, we somehow walked out with a 4-2 win. To cap off the week, we had a shooting gallery of a game against the Panthers, falling 6-5 in the shootout. Some positives to come out of the week were that the kids are finally catching their stride and really developing. Kakko, Chytil, and Fox have looked great the past few games. Lindgren also deserves a shoutout for his play lately. Strome continues to put up points as well. Here's to another successful and entertaining week (also hopefully Lias gets more minutes).24 (24.41)San Jose Sharks37-10-13-0-0Much better week for the Sharks, but there's still a lot of work to be done. They were able to squeeze out 3 wins, but almost blew late leads against the Hawks and Wild. If the Sharks want to be back in the playoff picture they'll have to clean it up and play consistently tight defence for the next two weeks, with the upcoming divisional games against good teams like the Oilers and Vegas. The forwards are looking better and they've had some periods with really good defence, but they can't have those 10 minute stretches where they almost blow the entire thing, because good divisional teams will pounce on those opportunities.25 (24.47)Columbus Blue Jackets-16-8-31-2-0Bemstrom got his first and his second career goals this week. The two games we were pretty close, which is an improvement over our 5 game skid, but we're still 1-6-1 in our last 8. Things are looking grim if we don't improve by American Thanksgiving.26 (26.5)Chicago Blackhawks-6-7-42-1-1After a disconcerting California road trip, the Blackhawks managed to go 2-0-1 against the Canucks, Penguins, and Leafs. Kane has 5G, 6A and points in each of our last 6 games. Keith has been playing well, and is averaging over 25 min in ATOI, which is around his career average, but is significantly higher than the past 2 seasons. Lehner has been fantastic, and is 2nd to only Greiss in SV%.27 (27.21)Minnesota Wild26-10-12-1-0Wild fans are in this weird spot right now where they want the youngsters to show signs of development but the collective team is being cheered on to tank. Kevin Fiala has shown, to quote the GM-who-shall-not-be-named, "gamebreaker" qualities in the past few games. Jordan Greenway and Joel Eriksson Ek have finally looked in the mirror and realized they have big bodies meant for a physical brand of hockey. Ryan Donato...well, he's still looking pretty lost. Can't win them all I suppose. As much as this franchise needs a number one pick, it did feel good to see four pucks go past Mr. Darcy on Saturday night.28 (28.03)Ottawa Senators36-9-13-1-0With the Sens recording 5 wins in their last 8 games, I'm suddenly feeling a sense of...what's the opposite of "shame"? Less shame. That's it. Make no mistakes folks - even though they've had a good week thanks to the heroic efforts of guys like Pageau and Nilsson playing absurdly well, this team is going to finish in the bottom 5. They NEED to finish in the bottom 3 in any case, so as to have the best chance of picking up a generational forward talent at this stacked draft. This means not winning against other bottom tier teams like the Kings and Rangers, which we unfortunately were unable to do this week. Good games for team morale but certainly not for draft position!!29 (28.26)New Jersey Devils-15-7-42-2-02-2-0 This week, nothing too out of the ordinary. Back in Sept. r/devils did a straw poll about Hynes' leash and most said he had until Halloween to turn it around. A week after the devils are 5-7-4 and severely under-performing for the talent level of the roster. This roster shouldn't be 5-11. Shero should already have a list in his mind at this point to replace Hynes. The Good: Blackwood seems to have rebounded from his rocky start and has taken the starter reins from Cory. Hughes is still playing great. He isnt always scoring, but seeing him play with hustle every shift is amazing to see. The Bad: Hall is cursed. He has 2 goals on 59 shots, only 3%, while his career shooting percent is over 10%. The Ugly: We're still barely 0.500 hockey week to week and sitting at the bottom of the metro, only 1 point above the Sens ins the same 16 games. The talk has already started on Hall's fetching price come trade deadline time.30 (28.56)Los Angeles Kings-55-11-10-2-1I was fortunate enough to watch the Kings play the Leafs in Toronto this past week. We look slower than molasses right now and its a pretty boring brand of hockey almost worse than the ‘wear you down’ of Sutter’s time as coach. Some of the young guys are doing well but its crazy to think that this core won 2 cups.31 (29.59)Detroit Red Wings-16-12-12-2-0Robbie Fabbri and Jonathan Bernier stole the week for the Red Wings. With a jam packed schedule of four games the Wings continued their walk of shame with piss poor effort against the Preds and breakdowns against the Rangers. Jimmy Howard gets the start and the hook in both games. Then the trade for Fabbri happens and Bernier gets the start in both games against Boston and Vegas and now the parade planning begins. In reality, the Bruins were at the tail-end of a 11-2-1 stretch and Vegas was back to back after getting beaten up by the Capitals. However, this is what we should expect from the Wings. The plan is to stay competitive and transition to the next phase of the rebuild. Detroit needs to be in these games against top teams who are struggling and limiting their chances. Boston and Vegas combined for 30 shots against the Wings at 5v5(47 All Situations) which is an incredible defensive performance considering the power those offenses have. r/hockey NHL Power Rankings Week 6: Tropical Depression Edition Source

Ramblings: Jets and Flames Post-Knockout; Keller; Playoff Hockey – April 23
It was locker cleaning day for the Winnipeg Jets and there was a lot of interesting tidbits to come of it.
There were a lot of votes of confidence for coach Paul Maurice, namely one coming from Blake Wheeler, with the captain saying he’d run through a brick wall for his bench boss.
The Jets have made the playoff in three out of five years with Maurice behind the bench full time and that includes last year’s trip to the Conference Final. Quite honestly, I don’t know whether Maurice is a good coach or not, and I don’t think the vast majority of hockey fans and analysts don’t either. Some people may point to questionable lineup decisions but literally every coach has those, so pointing it out isn’t unique to Winnipeg. The team has become more disciplined, ranking in the top-5 for short-handed opportunities every year from 2014-15 through 2017-18 before finishing 9th this year, so maybe he’s helping in this area?
Whatever the Jets decide to do, they better make sure if they decide to get a new coach that he’s better than what they have. The grass isn’t always greener – just look at Los Angeles since the end of Darryl Sutter’s tenure.
As for Patrik Laine, we may have a reason for his, let’s say, lackluster performance in the regular season: a back injury he was fighting throughout the year. The extent and nature are unknown, but any tweak would be enough to throw anyone off-kilter. Keep this in mind: Laine had a 30-goal season as a 20-year old, his third consecutive 30-goal season, while fighting through a back problem. Any and all inquiries as to What’s Wrong With Laine should now be settled.
In that tweet, we found it Nikolaj Ehlers fractured his leg during Game 5 of the playoffs. I assume that if he was fine enough to keep playing, any sort of recovery won’t linger into next year. Of course, once we have a more definitive answer, we’ll pass it along.
Josh Morrissey was still battling the effects from a separated shoulder earlier in the season that kept him out of the lineup for six weeks until the postseason. This was obvious as Morrissey typically played 22-ish minutes a night but played just 18 minutes a night in the playoffs.
We won’t know until we hear more about Laine, but it does not appear any of these issues will be long-term.
As I mentioned in these Ramblings before the playoffs, there were a lot of injuries for the Jets in the second half of the season. Morrissey, Ehlers, and Byfuglien were the ones we knew about, and now we know about Laine. It makes sense that this team did not look the same from January onward as it did from October through December. They’re a team with Cup aspirations but I hope they don’t blow it up. All of Laine, Jacob Trouba, and Kyle Connor are RFAs. I hope to see them all back next year.
*
There wasn’t nearly as much to report from media day for the Calgary Flames. It was mostly just discussion about how disappointing they were to lose out in the first round. There were no major injuries or anything along those lines to report, even Sean Monahan.
One interesting quote came from Matthew Tkachuk about how the playoffs are so much different than the regular season and he knows that better now that they’ve failed.
I bolded the word because it really reminds me of a lot of teams in the past. In 2007-08, the Blackhawks, a team on the rise, missed the playoffs by three points. The year after, they made the playoffs and lost in the Conference Final, winning the Cup the following season. The Penguins lost in the first round in 2007, lost in the Finals in 2008, and finally broke through in 2009 for the Cup. It’s not to say Calgary will win the Cup, and they’ve probably wanted to go deeper in the playoffs by now, but I see some other similarities here.
The problem would be that a major cog in their team, Mark Giordano, turns 36 in October. They can’t replace a Norris-calibre defenceman should he start to really decline. But if he doesn’t, there’s no reason to be pessimistic about this team.
*
Just want to point everyone in the direction of Cam Robinson’s 2019 draft rankings. He has a little write-up on the guys he has ranked in the first round as well as a complete list of his first three rounds, all the way to 93rd overall.
I also want to point in the direction of Jokke Nevalainen, who has been posting updates throughout the World U-18 Championship. You can read his first update here and his second one here.
Aside from Cam and Jokke’s great work, we have an army of scouts and writers doing lots of work at Dobber Prospects leading up to the draft. Be sure to check constantly for updates on the players you’ll be drafting in dynasty leagues this summer.
*
I was reading an article from Richard Morin from the Arizona Republic on the down year from Clayton Keller. There was a lot of talk about how he had difficulty getting to the net, and how the good teams get to the net to create chances.
So, I looked into that:
Going over our numbers here at Dobber Hockey, Keller had 108 even strength shots on goal from within 30 feet of the net in 2018-19. That number was 113 in 2017-18.
Keller’s individual expected goals per 60 minutes at five-on-five this year was 0.62. Last year it was 0.63. The importance of that is that expected goal rates are heavily influenced by shot distance – guys like Brendan Gallagher and James van Riemsdyk always rate highly because of it.
His role on the PP changed from primarily a bumper/net front-type player in 2017-18 to a primarily wing role in 2018-19, so if he wasn’t getting to the net on the PP, it wasn’t his decision.
Of course, there’s a whole lot more to the story than just checking numbers on a couple of sites. He did have fewer shots from right in tight than last year but his rate of shots from medium-to-high danger areas was basically unchanged. I’m sure there are instances when the coaching staff wished he got to the net more and that would explain their comments. In reality, when looking at the season as a whole, it was more of the same from his rookie year.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Keller won’t shoot seven percent next year like he did in this one.
*
We were guaranteed a third Game 7 of these playoffs as Carolina held down the fort in a 5-2 win over Washington in Game 6. After falling behind 2-1, Teuvo Teravainen scored early in the second period to tie the game up 2-2 with Jordan Staal scoring early in the third period to take the lead. Justin Williams salted it away with the fourth goal.
Alex Ovechkin was kicked out late in the game with a misconduct but it shouldn’t have any bearing on his availability for the next game.
There was a no-goal call due to intent to blow that may have cost the Caps a goal in the third period. Ovechkin jammed a puck that was under Mrazek's pad and he thought they scored. This was the play:
  "No goal" pic.twitter.com/XnbfzygDe3
— NBC Sports Capitals (@NBCSCapitals) April 23, 2019
I don't understand the fervour, it seemed like a pretty cut-and-dry play. I guess everything is magnified in the playoffs.
It was a great night for both Jaccob Slavin and Dougie Hamilton as they assisted on Warren Foegele’s goal in the first period, giving Slavin six points in the playoffs and five for Hamilton. The man named Dougie added an empty-net goal for his sixth point. The pairing played over half their shifts against Washington’s top line and just crushed them; Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson all had shot shares under 35 percent. Alex Ovechkin scored on a rush when they were on the ice but let’s be honest, you can only hold down one of the greatest ever for so long.
*
Dallas moved on to the second round thanks to a 2-1 overtime win in Game 6 Monday night. John Klingberg sealed the series on an odd-man rush off a nice find from Alex Radulov. The Stars had carried the play for most of the overtime period, and pretty much the second half of the game for that matter. It was a just reward for a team looking to earn a spot in the Conference Final for the first time in over a decade.
Ben Bishop, two days after his Vezina finalist announcement, saved 46 shots in the win. For the series, he had a .945 save percentage. It’s a fair to discuss things like Nashville’s abysmal power play, which was bad all year and went 0-15 in the playoffs, or their scoring depth, but not many teams will get past a goalie who manages a .945 over the course of a series.
Nashville’s third pair didn’t get much ice time, but I will say that Dante Fabbro seemed to get better each game. It’s hard to look good in a loss when you play 14 minutes on the third pair, but he seemed to outlet the puck well while holding is own in the zone. There is still a lot of work to be done here, obviously, and it was only a handful of games so beware confirmation bias.
The Stars now go to St. Louis to face the Blues in the second round.

DGB Grab Bag: A Marleau Family Christmas, Top Captains List, and the Belmont Islanders
Three Stars of Comedy
The third star: The Marleau family– Ever since Patrick Marleau arrived in Toronto, we've seen references to the veteran "adopting" Leafs youngsters Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. It's turned into a running joke on Christina Marleau's social media, and this week we got the inevitable (and adorable) family Christmas portrait.
The second star: Erik Karlsson gets weird – Don't make fun of him, it was -30 Kelvin out there and his brain had frozen two periods ago.
I can't decide if this makes it better or worse. (Better.)
The first star: The San Jose Sharks annual Christmas video – It never disappoints.
I hope the Sharks keep randomly inserting shirtless Joe Thornton into everything they do.
Outrage of the Week
The issue: The Islanders announced a new arena deal this week, ending years of speculation over the team's eventual home. But the agreement would call for the entire project to be funded privately by the team and its partners, which is impossible, so now they have to move to Houston. The outrage: We're going to miss them now that they're leaving. Is it justified: Absolutely. The Islanders have been part of the New York sports scene for four decades now. They produced one of the sport's greatest dynasties, with four straight Stanley Cups. Even though the franchise has fallen on hard times over recent years, it just won't be the same without them.
Then there's the John Tavares factor; we don't know if he's going to want to follow the team to Houston or whether he'll hit free agency instead. And of course, all those diehard Islanders fans who've supported the team over the years will now have to watch form afar, or find a new team.
It's such a tragedy. If only they'd been able to convince the city to cough up hundreds of millions of dollars to subsidize the new arena, we could have avoided

Wait, I'm being handed an update.
[squints at piece of paper]
It says here that the Islanders are in fact not moving to Houston. Apparently they're fine with funding the arena project on their own. And despite the lack of local funds (at least directly), the deal is being called "a massive, massive victory" for the team.
Huh.
Well, readers, this is all very confusing. Like you, I'd recently been under the impression that teams that don't get a handout have to move. The NHL has implied as much, and they wouldn't lie to us about something like this. Surely, the Islanders will be the only team to have to pay their own way. No? Not even close? Weird.
The only conclusion I can draw is that this week's reports were incorrect, and that the Islanders are indeed moving to Houston, or maybe Quebec or Seattle or Calgary (in a few months once the market becomes available). My condolences, Islanders fans. But you knew this was coming. No private arena funds, no team. We can't say the league didn't warn us all in advance.
Obscure Former Player of the Week
It was the NHL's 100th anniversary on Tuesday, which led me to wonder: Who's the best player to share a birthday with the league?
That turns out to be an easy one: legendary defenseman Doug Harvey was born on December 19, 1924. And you could built a pretty decent team around him using modern-day December 19 birthdays, including a goalie (Carter Hutton), a decent forward line (Robert Lang, Matt Stajan and Scott Pearson), a stay-at-home blue-liner (Eric Weinrich) and a tough guy (Behn Wilson).
But none of those guys are all that obscure, so let's dig a little deeper for this week's player: journeyman forward Ron Schock.
Schock was a center who debuted with the Bruins during the 1963-64 season, playing parts of four seasons in Boston before expansion came calling in 1967. He was picked by the Blues, where he spent two seasons and scored a double-overtime breakaway goal against the North Stars in Game 7 in the West Division series to send the team to the 1968 Stanley Cup Final.
He was dealt to the Penguins in 1969, allegedly two days after telling a minor hockey dinner it was one of the last places he'd ever want to be traded. He spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh, and had a career high 23 goals and 86 points in 1974-75. He was traded to the Sabres in 1977 in a straight up deal for future tragic story Brian "Spinner" Spencer. Schock played one season in Buffalo, and that was it for his NHL career. All told he played 909 games, recording 166 goals and 517 points. Happy belated birthday, Ron. Your card from the NHL probably arrived on the wrong day.
The NHL (Network) Actually Got Something Right
The NHL Network released another one of its ranked lists on Monday, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it was the highlight of my entire week.
We've covered the network lists before, and the way they always inspire outrage for not being quite right. That's always the way these things go—I've been known to dabble in the occasional ranked list from time to time, so I'm speaking from experience—and there are really only two ways you can handle the criticism. The first is to just shrug, accept it, and keep doing your best work.
This week, the NHL Network chose the second option: Intentionally create a list designed for no other purpose than to piss off as many people as you can.
I give you the rankings of best captain in NHL history:
Oh man, where to begin.
Well, let's start at the top, where Mark Messier takes the one spot. That's no surprise, since we all apparently agreed that Messier was the greatest leader in history even though he walked out to force a trade from the Oilers and bolted the Rangers as a free agent. But the highlight here is the list just outright pretending that he was never the captain in Vancouver. Apparently this list was written by a Canucks fan.
The next few aren't especially controversial, assuming we can ignore that #5 pick Ray Bourque bailed on the Bruins to chase his Cup somewhere else. But then we inevitably get to the "way too high Blackhawk" ranking, as Jonathan Toews is apparently already a better captain than Wayne Gretzky or Sidney Crosby. He's also better than Mario Lemieux, who only came back from cancer and later bought his team to keep it from moving.
Other top 25 picks include Joe Sakic (who once signed an offer sheet with the Rangers), Ron Francis (who was once stripped of the captaincy in Hartford), and Daniel Alfredsson (whose tenure ended with him admitting his team couldn't win a playoff series that was still happening and then bolting in free agency).
Be sure to stick around into the 20s, so you can get to them including Pierre Pilote as an obvious makeup call for inexcusably leaving him off their Top 100 list and then enjoy the moment where they clearly went "Oh crap, we don't have any Americans" and then had to squeeze in Derian Hatcher, presumably after being shocked to find out the Stars' Cup-winning captain wasn't Mike Modano.
Do all of these guys belong on a list of the 25 best captains ever? Sure. Maybe? I have no idea, and neither do you. That's the beauty of choosing captains as a topic. It's something that every fan a.) feels strongly about and b.) has no objective way to measure. So you're basically guaranteed to make everyone really mad. It's genius.
I hope the NHL Network keeps it up, and continues to steer into the ranking-based outrage skid. Do "most handsome players" and leave Henrik Lundqvist off the list. Maybe "history's toughest fighters" and put Bob Probert one spot behind Claude Lemieux. Do "the 25 best theme songs" and then list Brass Bonanza in 23 of the spots instead of all 25.
Keep it up for a few years, then release a list of your 25 best lists and watch the world burn. I'm here for you, NHL Network. Let's make this happen.
Classic YouTube Clip Breakdown
It's been a rough few weeks for the Senators. They lost a bunch of games, falling out of the playoff hunt. Then when they snapped that streak and were all set to bask in the glory of hosting the franchise's first ever outdoor game, their owner decided it would be a good time to rant about moving the team. That was, let's just say, not ideal.
But look on the bright side, Ottawa. As bad as things get, at least you don't have to worry about legendary sportswriter Earl McRae going on television and absolutely ethering you in front of a national audience.
So we're midway through 1993-94, the second season for the reborn Senators. Their debut was a disaster, and this year isn't going much better. Now seems like a good time to deliver a few solid kicks to the ribs, no?
Our host is Dave Hodge, one of the great Canadian broadcasters ever, not to mention a guy who once got himself fired from Hockey Night in Canada by flipping a pen. Today he welcomes Ottawa Sun columnist Earl McRae, who spent his career trying to get fired by flipping off pretty much everyone.
McRae was the sort of guy who could be an acquired taste, so let's be clear: He was awesome and if you didn't like him then there was something wrong with you. He's basically Dick Beddoes with more edge, slightly updated material, and a smaller wardrobe budget. I enjoyed him thoroughly.
Also, I want McRae's condescending laugh as my ringtone.
It takes McRae roughly four seconds to get to his first Elvis reference, which is slow by his standards. Elvis was kind of a thing with Earl, who was a founding member of the Elvis Sighting Society and once went on the Jerry Springer Show to talk about having met The King in Tweed, Ontario. I swear to you I did not make any of that up.
If there was any thought of McRae going easy on the second-year Sens, he puts that to rest by calling them "the worst team in creation" before ripping them for trading leading scorer Bob Kudelski to Florida. That was a weird deal, since the Panthers were even newer than the Senators and shouldn't have been giving up future assets for a scorer. Luckily, the assets the Senators got back didn't turn out to have much of a future at all, so I guess it all worked out.
Random fun fact: The midseason trade came when the Panthers had several games in hand over Ottawa, which allowed Kudelski to end up playing in a never-to-be-broken NHL record 86 games in a single season.
The two rookies McRae mentions are Alexei Yashin and Alexandre Daigle, who will both go on to leave Ottawa with an angry mob chasing them. It's basically our trademark finishing move up here.
Hodge agrees the trade is an odd one, but offers up a half-hearted defense to give McRae an opening to ease up on his criticism. Let's see if he takes it.
"This is a bad trade by a rookie GM who's blown it here." I'm going to mark that down as a "no."
The rookie GM is Randy Sexton, by the way. He really was a rookie—not only was this his first NHL season as a GM, but he'd been a real estate executive just a few years earlier. He went on to a long career in various NHL roles, though, including a stint as the Panthers GM in 2009. He's currently the GM of the Sabres' AHL team.
"Sexton says, well he's big, he's physical. Who cares, if he can't put the puck in the net?" Earl McRae was leading the charge on analytics before analytics was a thing.
They move on to Senators coach Rick Bowness, rumored to be on the hot seat. McRae likes him but doesn't have much confidence in the front office keeping him around because only John Ferguson "knows a hockey puck from a coconut." I'm assuming it goes without saying that he's referring to John Ferguson Sr.
McRae calls Sexton "constipated," works in a dig at Mike Milbury, and calls the Senators "a bunch of clowns." This is the positive section of the video.
He then throws Daigle under the bus by breaking the news that his father is telling people that he's upset over the lack of talent surrounding him. He then thoroughly psychoanalyzes Daigle, which almost never works out well for sportswriters except he basically ends up being 100 percent right about how his career played out.
Hodge works in a joke about the way Daigle dresses, which is a reference to the infamous nurse outfit ad. Note to future NHL prospects: You don't have to say yes to every endorsement idea.
Hodge tries to close, but McRae interrupts to make one last point. He takes a moment to apologize if he's coming across as too critical, acknowledges that the Senators are still an expansion team, and thanks everyone in the organization for doing their best.
No, of course he doesn't. What he actually does is point out that the Senators are closer to the defunct Montreal Maroons than to first place in their division. We then cut away before McRae can spray paint his initials on the unconscious Senators organization's back. Seriously, he was the absolute best. I miss him so much.
McRae left us several years ago, after suffering a heart attack in the newsroom. He will no doubt have a great time swapping hockey stories with Elvis in the afterlife, in the event that Elvis eventually dies.

DGB Grab Bag: A Marleau Family Christmas, Top Captains List, and the Belmont Islanders
Three Stars of Comedy
The third star: The Marleau family– Ever since Patrick Marleau arrived in Toronto, we’ve seen references to the veteran “adopting” Leafs youngsters Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. It’s turned into a running joke on Christina Marleau’s social media, and this week we got the inevitable (and adorable) family Christmas portrait.
The second star: Erik Karlsson gets weird – Don’t make fun of him, it was -30 Kelvin out there and his brain had frozen two periods ago.
I can’t decide if this makes it better or worse. (Better.)
The first star: The San Jose Sharks annual Christmas video – It never disappoints.
I hope the Sharks keep randomly inserting shirtless Joe Thornton into everything they do.
Outrage of the Week
The issue: The Islanders announced a new arena deal this week, ending years of speculation over the team’s eventual home. But the agreement would call for the entire project to be funded privately by the team and its partners, which is impossible, so now they have to move to Houston.
The outrage: We’re going to miss them now that they’re leaving.
Is it justified: Absolutely. The Islanders have been part of the New York sports scene for four decades now. They produced one of the sport’s greatest dynasties, with four straight Stanley Cups. Even though the franchise has fallen on hard times over recent years, it just won’t be the same without them.
Then there’s the John Tavares factor; we don’t know if he’s going to want to follow the team to Houston or whether he’ll hit free agency instead. And of course, all those diehard Islanders fans who’ve supported the team over the years will now have to watch form afar, or find a new team.
It’s such a tragedy. If only they’d been able to convince the city to cough up hundreds of millions of dollars to subsidize the new arena, we could have avoided

Wait, I’m being handed an update.
[squints at piece of paper]
It says here that the Islanders are in fact not moving to Houston. Apparently they’re fine with funding the arena project on their own. And despite the lack of local funds (at least directly), the deal is being called “a massive, massive victory” for the team.
Huh.
Well, readers, this is all very confusing. Like you, I’d recently been under the impression that teams that don’t get a handout have to move. The NHL has implied as much, and they wouldn’t lie to us about something like this. Surely, the Islanders will be the only team to have to pay their own way. No? Not even close? Weird.
The only conclusion I can draw is that this week’s reports were incorrect, and that the Islanders are indeed moving to Houston, or maybe Quebec or Seattle or Calgary (in a few months once the market becomes available). My condolences, Islanders fans. But you knew this was coming. No private arena funds, no team. We can’t say the league didn’t warn us all in advance.
Obscure Former Player of the Week
It was the NHL’s 100th anniversary on Tuesday, which led me to wonder: Who’s the best player to share a birthday with the league?
That turns out to be an easy one: legendary defenseman Doug Harvey was born on December 19, 1924. And you could built a pretty decent team around him using modern-day December 19 birthdays, including a goalie (Carter Hutton), a decent forward line (Robert Lang, Matt Stajan and Scott Pearson), a stay-at-home blue-liner (Eric Weinrich) and a tough guy (Behn Wilson).
But none of those guys are all that obscure, so let’s dig a little deeper for this week’s player: journeyman forward Ron Schock.
He was dealt to the Penguins in 1969, allegedly two days after telling a minor hockey dinner it was one of the last places he’d ever want to be traded. He spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh, and had a career high 23 goals and 86 points in 1974-75. He was traded to the Sabres in 1977 in a straight up deal for future tragic story Brian “Spinner” Spencer. Schock played one season in Buffalo, and that was it for his NHL career. All told he played 909 games, recording 166 goals and 517 points. Happy belated birthday, Ron. Your card from the NHL probably arrived on the wrong day.

Dobber Ramblings: Day Two of the NHL Playoffs; Gusev; Defence Scoring – April 12
There may be reinforcements on the way for Vegas as Nikita Gusev, the 26-year old Russian who was traded to the Golden Knights by Tampa Bay as part of the package to draft Jason Garrison in the expansion draft, could be in Vegas soon.
You can read Gusev’s Dobber Prospects profile here.
Nothing is a done deal yet. Gusev is under contract in the KHL through the end of the month, which means some negotiating will need to be completed, and the Russian Federation has recalled him ahead of the 2019 World Championships, which is another hurdle. Then he has to actually make his way to Vegas and suit up. All the same, it would be exciting to see him in the playoffs.
*
Just a small thing, but Ilya Samsonov, Washington’s top goalie prospect, was on the ice for morning skate on Thursday. Barring catastrophic injuries, he won’t get into game action, but it’s still pretty cool to see him on NHL ice nonetheless.
*
Just for a bit of fun, there was an article over at The Athletic from Sean McIndoe about the “what ifs” of the draft lottery. These are games involving teams near or around the picks that would end up in the top-3 and how things would be different if small little quirks in those games hadn’t gone the right way. Hockey is about razor-thin margins, even when it comes to draft positioning.
*
The Leafs were flat-out the better team in Game 1 as they skated away with a 4-1 win over Boston. The speed from Toronto, combined with precision passing, led to odd-man opportunity after odd-man opportunity for the team. They even got a short-handed penalty shot when Mitch Marner broke free on a penalty kill (he converted). Frederik Andersen had to make 37 saves, but a lot of those saves weren’t near the quality of shots Tuukka Rask was facing at the other end.
Something to note: Jake Gardiner played 16:32 in this game, fifth-lowest among Leafs blue liners. That’s the second-lowest mark of the season for him, his lowest being 16:30 in the game he was injured on February 25th. The Leafs were nursing a 3-1 lead for much of the game so maybe Mike Babcock was just saving him unless they desperately needed him? Just something to keep an eye on.
*
Andrei Svechnikov scored a pair of third-period goals to make things interesting for Carolina, but Washington’s Lars Eller tallied an empty netter to seal a 4-2 win for the Capitals. At least for the first 20 minutes, this looked like a game between a defending Stanley Cup champion and a (mostly) young team with several players playing their first postseason contest.
Nicklas Backstrom had a pair of goals, including a beautiful curl-and-snap shot that beat Petr Mrazek on the glove side, using the Carolina defenceman as a screen.
John Carlson played over 25 minutes, registering three assists, two blocked shots, and four hits along the way.
*
Update on the late game in the morning.
*
Yesterday in these Ramblings I talked a lot about defence scoring trends. While there is a lot more to dig into, which I will dig into at some point in the offseason, I want to look at actual defence scoring. Let’s go through some of the offensive performances across the NHL this season.
  Erik Gustafsson
There is a whole lot going on here. Coming into the season, Gustafsson was a 26-year old who’d been drafted by the Oilers in 2012, spent a few post-lockout seasons in Sweden, bounced between the AHL and NHL for a couple years, and then exploded for 60 points this year.
Of course, what stands out immediately is that he shot over 10 percent. That’s pretty high for a blue liner. For reference, in 2017-18, Alex Goligoski shot 10.1 percent and followed that up this year with a 2.9 percent season; in 2016-17, John Klingberg shot 10.5 percent and followed that up in 2017-18 with a 3.9 percent season; in the same year, Nick Holden shot an insane 13.1 percent and that crashed to five percent in 2017-18. That isn’t to say every defenceman with a high shooting percentage always craters – Shea Weber has usually done pretty well – but the odds aren’t in Gustafsson’s favour.
That isn’t to say Gustafsson’s season is a fluke. When looking at additional stats like the rate at which he exits his zone or enters the offensive zone with possession and how he can find his teammates for shots via shot assists, we certainly see how good he was. Here’s how his 2018-19 season compares to the 2017-18 season another top-end puck-moving defenceman (from CJ Turtoro’s viz):
As I wrote about yesterday on Eric Cernak, one season does not make a career, but despite the high shooting percentage, it was a marvelous campaign for Gustafsson.
The question is if he maintains his power-play role; he had more than 100 minutes at five-on-four over the next-closest Blackhawks defenceman. Henri Jokiharju looked great whenever they allowed him to play in the NHL and Adam Boqvist was a top-10 pick last year for the franchise and has been tearing up the OHL playoffs to the tune of nine goals and 12 points in eight games. It seems certain that unless he falls off the map (he won’t), Gustafsson should have the PP role for 2019-20. Beyond that? Less certain.
  Torey Krug
Speaking of Krug, we can only wonder the season he would have had if he had played 80 games. Among defencemen in the league this year, Krug:
Was third in points per minute behind Mark Giordano and Brent Burns
Was first in totals assists per minute
Was eighth in primary points per minute
Was third in primary assists per minute
Was 18th in shots per minute
Krug set a career-high in assists for a single season with 47 and did so in just 64 games.
It was just a marvelous season all around, but the true upside was limited by injury. It’s worth noting that his missed time was out of the norm for him; in his five previous seasons, he had never missed more than six games and averaged 79 games a season. I wouldn’t worry too much about some lingering injury history.
With Krug still in his prime and that Boston team loaded for another run next year regardless of how this year turns out, I would expect more of the same from Krug.
  Vince Dunn
When using the Dobber Tools report generator, we can easily find which defencemen led the league in individual points percentage (IPP) at even strength. IPP is the rate at which a player garners a point when a goal is scored with that player on the ice. You will typically see the elite defencemen; last year, the top-5 included Burns, Krug, Pietrangelo, and Klingberg. The year before it was Burns, Hamilton, Karlsson, Jones, and Shattenkirk. Some guys find their way into the top-10 with some luck – names like Skjei, Severson, and Braun appear – but they’re mostly top-end puck-movers. That’s what makes this list from 2018-19 so interesting:
The two names that really stick out are Vince Dunn and Brandon Montour. We’ll save Montour for another day.
Dunn has long been thought of as an offensive defenceman. He had 99 points over his final 120 games in the OHL and had 45 points in 72 games as a 20-year old rookie in the AHL back in 2016-17. That we see him among the leaders in a category that helps point us in the direction of puck movers shouldn’t be a huge surprise.
Here’s the thing: there’s not a whole lot to support that Dunn is a top-end puck-mover from the blue line (yet). Without inundating with charts, his zone entry/exit rates and shot-assist rates pale in comparison to someone like Gustafsson. It’s worth noting that these numbers, specifically shot-assists, were a lot better in 2017-18 than in 2018-19, and this season’s tracking data isn’t yet complete. Maybe his numbers improved a lot in the second half as the rest of the team improved with him. I’m more than willing to give some time for more data to be collected before making a final determination.
All I’m saying for now is that I’m leery of predicting some sort of Gustafsson-esque breakout. There is still Alex Pietrangelo’s ice time to contend with and Colton Parayko isn’t someone to just eschew. Of course, Dunn is still just 22 years old, so the fact that we’re even talking about the possibility of him being a good playmaker from the blue line is a very good sign.
  Neal Pionk
When we look at the list of top producers per minute from the blue line at five-on-four, most of the names make sense. We see Krug, Byfuglien, Yandle, Hedman, and Rielly, among others. The defenceman who finished second in points/60 minutes at five-on-four this year (minimum of 100 minutes)? Yeah, I kinda gave it away. It was Pionk. In fact, over the last two years, he leads all defencemen in points/60 minutes on the power play. Yes, all defencemen. Granted, it’s limited ice time (140 minutes or so), but it’s been an unbelievable run.
I think a bit of caution should be used here. Pionk had a poor season defensively, as much of the rest of the team did. Tony DeAngelo had a good season for the team even if David Quinn wouldn’t play him every night. Kevin Shattenkirk is still lurking and I’m sure he’d like to have a rebound season of his own. I’m not entirely sure what the Rangers are going to do on the blue line next year. I’m not entirely sure the Rangers know what the Rangers are going to do on the blue line next year.
All I wanted to point out is that there could be some sneaky value should A) Pionk be a regular next year again and B) no one else is brought in. There are a lot of moving parts that can change in the next 5-6 months.
  Filip Hronek
Just wanted to include what a great season Hronek had. The 21-year old was among the top-10 defencemen in relative shot share at five-on-five. That’s in the league, mind you.
Hronek had 13 points in 22 games after his recall from the AHL in the middle of February, including nearly 22 minutes of ice time per night. By that point, the team was casting off, or getting ready to cast off, tradeable assets like Nick Jensen and Gustav Nyquist. Mike Green’s season was nearly over by that point. All this is to say that Hronek did fairly well down the stretch considering the Red Wings were largely a one-line team with Andreas Athanasiou providing some additional scoring. Pretty good for a rookie defenceman.

Ramblings: Thoughts on Dahlin, Bailey, Montembeault, Quality Starts, more goalie talk and more (Mar 18)
Ramblings: Thoughts on Montour/Dahlin, Bailey, Montembeault, Quality Starts, more goalie talk and more
***
Now available for pre-sale – the 13th annual Interactive Playoff Draft List. Pre-order it here. It will be Friday April 5. If you bought the Ultimate Fantasy Pack in the summer, this will be included in that purchase. It is not included in the Keeper Fantasy Pack.
*
Travis Zajac had been having himself a great season, not only becoming one of the best defensive forwards in the game but also managing to put up decent points while doing so. A month ago his points-per-game average was higher than it’s been since 2010. But with all the injuries to the Devils Zajac no longer has a supporting cast and everything is falling apart in terms of fantasy numbers. His Hits are up and his PP time is up, but in the last 12 games he’s a minus-10 with five points. On Sunday I counted eight forwards in the lineup who have had AHL time this year plus Drew Stafford who is a regular healthy scratch.
Cory Schneider is getting regular work every second game now. The pattern has continued for 11 games and no matter how spaced apart each game is, Schneider and Mackenzie Blackwood are straight up rotating. Schneider has four consecutive Quality Starts, so this system is working well for him as he moves further down the road to recovery.
Since starting off his rookie season with 18 points in 23 games (0.78), Will Butcher has 54 points in 129 games (0.42). That’s a 34-point pace.
*
The Avalanche are really trying to squeeze value, any value, out of the third-round draft pick they gave up to get Derick Brassard. He has seen 21 minutes of PP time over the last six games (3.5 minutes per game!) and has come up empty. This is while on that power play with two of the league’s leading scorers. And to make matter’s worse, he is minus-7 in that span. He is winning faceoffs though (at least 60% FOW in each of the last five games), I’ll give that much.
Since picking up Brassard, Carl Soderberg’s great season has come to end. Now he’s back to mediocre season. Soderberg has two points in his last 10 games and is minus-6 in that span.
Philipp Grubauer has posted five consecutive Quality Starts and three shutouts, including one Sunday. With Semyon Varlamov coming off four consecutive non-Quality Starts and the Avs scratching for wins here, Grubauer is going to get more starts than we would have guessed two weeks ago.
*
Alexander Nylander was riding a four-game points streak (six points) for Rochester when he was called up by the Sabres last week. It took him four games but he finally got on the board for the big club, notching two assists Sunday. He was on a line with Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues.
Check out our scouting profile for Nylander, including his PNHLe graph (new feature!) here.
Brandon Montour has six points in the 10 games since joining the Sabres, and just one of those via the power play. He is getting mostly second-unit PP time and yet is still producing offense. He hasn’t impacted Rasmus Dahlin in terms of PP time, but because Dahlin is paired up with Montour at even strength, he seems to be tied down. As the better player defensively, Dahlin is stuck being responsible while Montour gets free rein. Dahlin did get an ES point Sunday, but including that one he has just two points in those 10 games that he’s been paired up with Montour. He’s also a minus-7. This pairing is something to watch and could influence projections for 2018-19.
*
David Perron has points in each of his two games since returning from injury. He is filling in on the first line for the Blues, taking Vladimir Tarasenko’s spot.
It’s still early, just five games in, but it looks like the Blues are leaning towards an every-other-game goalie rotation for the time being. Allen has four consecutive Quality Starts. Last five games:
Jake Allen – 1-2-2, 2.17, 0.920, 1 SO, 4 QS
Jordan Winnington – 3-2-0, 2.04, 0.922, 1 SO, 2 QS
The numbers have been comparable, but the team is still coming together better in front of “Winnington”.
*
Ryan Suter picked up an assist Sunday but he has had a tough run of late, managing five points in his last 15 games. Suter had 26 points in 31 games to start the year. Then his partner Matt Dumba suffered an injury early in Game 32. Suter has 19 points in 42 games with Jared Spurgeon by his side.
Mathew Barzal’s two assists Sunday gives him six points in six games. This is on the heels of a big slump that saw just nine points in 21 games. He’s playing with Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee now after playing most of the season with Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier.
I’m disappointed in Beauvillier given his golden opportunity this year. But I’m guessing it came about one year too soon. I’ll be still interested in landing him as a depth guy for next season and see what happens, but man – he’s had every chance this year. From linemates to ice time to prime zone starts to pretty good secondary PP time. All for maybe 30 points in the end?
Just five points in his last 13 games for Josh Bailey. And now he’s not only without John Tavares on his line, but both Anders Lee and Barzal are on another line. His linemates? Tom Kuhnhackl and Valtteri Filppula. I had enough room on my bench in my one league to hang onto him, but I certainly have no qualms about dropping him. He won’t be one of my 12 keepers and frankly if I can keep 18 I doubt he’d make that list either. We all saw this decline coming once Tavares left, but he had been hanging in there pretty well with 45 points in 59 games before this slump.
*
Evgeni Malkin was honored on Saturday for getting his 1000th point last week. Later that game he suffered a shoulder injury and is considered “week to week”. To me, that puts him out for the season or at best he’s back for the last game or two. With him out of the lineup, the Sidney Crosby line remained intact (Jared McCann, Jake Guentzel). Teddy Blueger shifted to center in Malkin’s spot and Bryan Rust moved up to Blueger’s wing slot.
If you missed the Battle of Pennsylvania Sunday, the Flyers tied the game at one with 19 seconds left. Then they won the game with four seconds left in OT. The Flyers did a ton of line juggling, and that’s been the case a lot lately thanks to Jakub Voracek’s recent suspension and the team desperate for wins. But whatever line gets Sean Couturier does just fine. Couturier has become the driver, and not the passenger. He has 64 points in his last 56 games.
{youtube}tSwqmFLRc98{/youtube}
After losing his first start since being called back up from the AHL, Carter Hart had a hell of a second game Sunday. He stopped 42 of 43 for the OT win.
*
Jacob Markstrom has Quality Starts in seven of his last eight games, and he stopped 44 of 46 on Sunday for the win. Since November 24 Markstrom is 19-12-7, 2.39 and 0.923 with 28 Quality Starts (73.7% QS is pretty spectacular).
*
Sam Montembeault started his fifth consecutive game Saturday. He had one game of NHL experience prior to that. After three straight Quality Starts, his fourth game wasn’t a QS but he still got the win. And on Sunday, Game 5, it was a loss (three goals on 22 shots). I think, with the momentum petering out for Monty, the Panthers will return to the James Reimer – Roberto Luongo duo again, now that they’re both apparently healthy. But I’ve been a fan of Montembeault and I’m impressed with his start in the NHL. What I like most is that he’s Florida’s top goalie prospect, and at this point is their goalie of the future by default. Not by talent, but by timing. Not that he’s a terrible goalie, he’s a decent prospect, but the timing is lining up right for him. He’s 22 right now, and Reimer – Luongo are paired up for two more years. When he’s 25, he’ll step right in and in the meantime he’ll fill in for injuries (which happen a lot with these two).
*
Last week the Leafs signed undrafted free agent defenseman Joseph Duszak. He had a massive junior year in the NCAA with 47 points in 37 games, plus 42 PIM. He’s 21, a little on the small side (5-10) but can move the puck. His next two season will likely see him in the AHL but I think he has potential if developed properly. You can read our scouting report and PNHLe graph on Duszak here.
Detroit signed LW Taro Hirose, a shifty winger for Michigan State, as a free agent. Hirose had 50 points in 36 games in his junior year. I included Hirose as a player to watch in the NCAA free agent section of my Midseason Guide. The Wings also signed another player I had in the MSG as a free agent to watch – Ryan Kuffner. He was Max Veronneau’s linemate and ended up outscoring the more highly-touted Veronneau 44 points to 37 (in 31 games).
Veronneau, as you know, signed with Ottawa and promptly picked up an assist in his second NHL game. He picked the right team to sign with, even if he wasn’t already from Ottawa. This team is going to be young next year and he has a reasonable shot of making it.
The Canucks signed another guy I listed in the MSG (so I had four out of the five big names last week in the Midseason Guide) – defenseman Josh Teves. The NHL squad isn’t exactly flush with prime puck-moving defensemen so I’ll be interested in seeing his impact. It’s a shame he’s not a right shooter, or I’d like him even more.
*
Brendan Perlini has had his share of struggles since joining the Blackhawks, culminating in healthy scratches littered throughout February. But since getting back into the lineup March 2 he has 10 points in seven games. This is thanks to being put on the Dylan Strome/Alex DeBrincat line, supplanting Dominik Kahun. The 22-year-old Perlini was the 12th overall draft pick in 2014 so giving up on him for the long term would have been premature.

Frozen Tools update: We added a new stat RBS (Really Bad Start
yeah, I know): If a goalie has a SV% of less than 0.850 in a game he gets an RBS. This is in the goalie profiles and game logs. We also increased the reports in the line combos section so that “Last Game Lines” now has five most common lines (up from four) and “Last 3 Game Lines” now has the six most common line combos (up from four).
Fantasy Geek update: Running reports currently gives an error. The sheer size of the data this late in the season is at the heart of this. We will shut down the site (or we did, if you’re reading this later) from 3am to 6am EST to make our fixes live. Hopefully you can run reports better after this.
*
See you next Monday.

Looking Ahead: November 30 – December 12
All fantasy owners need help in the short term AND the long term. The Looking Ahead feature identifies one player to plug into lineups in the short term, a second to invest in for the long term, a third to bench for the coming week, and a fourth who will struggle to meet expectations for some time. All players discussed are selected based on their upcoming schedule.
Stats updated through Wednesday, November 28th
The Immediate Fix (Grab this guy and use him for the next several days)
Curtis McElhinney, G, Carolina Hurricanes (Available in 72 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – With the waiving of Scott Darling, Carolina is down to two NHL goalies between McElhinney and Petr Mrazek, and McElhinney is the clear starter for the time being. Through his nine starts so far, C-Mac has put up seven wins, with five quality starts, and has a sparkling 0.930sv% with a 2.12 GAA. The opportunity exists that he loses that job, as the perennial backup has never topped 40 games in a season, but in a backup role last year with Toronto his numbers were sparkling (0.934sv%, 2.14GAA) and on a talented Carolina team there’s no reason to expect him to crater any time soon.
The Building Block (Buy now, sit back and enjoy the production)
Brady Tkachuk, W, Ottawa Senators (Available in 54 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Making a very, very strong push for the Calder while proving a million Sens fans wrong – myself included – Tkachuk has been a dominant player for both points leagues as well as leagues that count peripherals. Through 14 games, Tkachuk has 9G-7A while firing 43(!) shots on goal and picking up a combined 35 hits/blocks as well as 17 PIM. He plays on the potent top power play for Ottawa and plays even strength alongside Mark Stone and Colin White, and while his ice time has been uneven – below 14 minutes twice in the past five games but the other three games have seen 17, 18 and 20 – he should continue to score at a torrid pace.
The Odd Man Out (His short-term value is cause for concern)
Jeff Petry, D, Montreal Canadiens (Owned in 68 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Over the last five games before Shea Weber returned, Jeff Petry saw ice time of 27 minutes (three times), 22 minutes, and 33 minutes, which pushed his season average to 24:52 per game. In Weber’s first game back, Petry already saw a drop in time – 22:53 which is still a strong number – but got pushed off the top power play unit. Petry’s a very strong player that piles up peripheral stats and shots on goal, but don’t expect his line of 2G-15A (25 games) to improve much; both of his goals have come on the power play and four of his 15 assists also came on the power play, and that combined with the cut in ice time will hurt Petry immensely. He’s worth hanging on to both for the off-chance Weber gets hurt again, or for the peripheral stats he adds if that’s something your league tracks.
The Anchors (They’ll do nothing but disappoint even over the long haul)
Kevin Shattenkirk, D, New York Rangers (Owned in 38 percent of Yahoo! Leagues) – Shattenkirk’s value should plummet in the short-term thanks to the Rangers’ light schedule, but he’s a major concern in the long-term and can safely be dropped in all formats. Beyond losing his PP1 time to Neal Pionk, Shattenkirk is seeing a full minute less per game than he’s ever averaged in his career and has a dismal 1G-7A in 24 games to show for it. He does contribute a small amount of peripherals, but there are better values available – especially in cap leagues – and won’t recapture his special teams time while he’s in New York.
Love ‘Em (These squads are sure to pay dividends in the coming days)
Montreal – The Habs have six games between November 30th and December 12th, but four of those games should be wide-open hockey which is great for fantasy production. Montreal plays Ottawa (twice!), the Rangers and Blackhawks which are the appealing matchups, as well as facing Minnesota and San Jose. They have one back-to-back, but both games are at home.
Los Angeles – As they continue to struggle to score, the Kings still make this list on volume: seven games in this period, with four at home and three on the road, and only two back-to-backs. The Kings *did* manage a whopping five goals against a defensively-poor Oilers team, and games against Carolina, Arizona, Detroit and Buffalo should help them along.
San Jose – They only have six games in this period, but the Sharks have some easy opponents (Ottawa, Dallas and Carolina) as well as games against Montreal, Arizona and New Jersey. The Sharks are currently 10th in Goals For and – as long as Timo Meier’s injury isn’t of the long-term variety – have three strong scoring lines and a suddenly-awake power play.
Leave ‘Em (These squads will leave fantasy owners sorely disappointed in the short term)
Philadelphia – After firing their GM, the Flyers and head coach Dave Hakstol should be on edge, and with a short schedule coming up – just five games in this period, including four days off after playing their interstate rival – they’ll be hard-pressed to figure it out. Coaches on death’s door tend to make irrational line changes, so you can’t count on anyone outside of Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier. Beyond the Pens, Philly also plays games against Columbus at home, and Buffalo, Winnipeg and Calgary on the road.
Buffalo – The surprise Sabres also suffer from a light schedule, although their fantasy-relevant players in Jack Eichel, Jeff Skinner and Rasmus Ristolainen can still be rolled out without issue. Buffalo has only five games between the 30th and December 12th, which includes a game at Nashville as well as Florida, and home games against Toronto, Philly and Los Angeles.
NY Rangers – No team has a worse schedule than the Rangers, with only four games coming, and injuries to key parts in Mats Zuccarello and Vladislav Namestnikov. Although the Rangers have been scoring, with games against Montreal and Tampa Bay (both on the road) to go with games against Winnipeg (home) and Florida (road,) they’ll be in tough to provide any fantasy production.
