It really depends on what media you're following. They don't actually hate each other except in specific works. They're best friends, colleagues and at the very least, consider each other family. Even with the variety of universes in comics, Batman and Superman hating each other is very rare and in specific circumstances with reasons behind it.

Long story short: they don't (beef). They disagree and argue, sure. They're rivals, but in a manner that conveys the utmost respect for one another. Their friendship can turn toxic, too, but it's never out of hate.

Yes, there is initial friction when they start working together. Both come with a different set of values and methods to uphold justice, which is what makes their friendship so compelling. After everything, even when they don't see eye to eye, they support one another and they are there for one another. They show deep compassion and understanding for one another, even without necessarily speaking. Batman is highly observant, and Superman is endlessly compassionate.

I'm too tired to find the examples right now, but a couple of bullet points:

Batman is Superman's hero - Superman has unwavering faith in Batman even if his plans are batshit crazy. I can't find the panels rn, but there was even an arc where Batman had a plan that involved Clark slowly killing himself for a 1% chance (or something ridic like that) of saving the universe. It was horrible, but Clark trusted him no matter what.

When Bruce got engaged with Selina, there was an entire sidestory where they went on a double date with Clark and Lois, and both men went into great depth of why they admire one another and how important they are to each other. The respect between them is immeasurable.

Batman's first Robin (Dick Grayson) was a huge Superman fan, and Superman was an important part of his life. To the point that once he stopped being Robin and became Nightwing, his hero name 'Nightwing' actually comes from a Kryptonian story Superman told him.

Both Superman and Batman's respective families are closely knit, each 'bat' has a 'super' that is associated with them, either on a team with them or as friends. If they hated each other, I don't think their families would be this close-knit.

Superman knows the sound of Bruce's heartbeat and listens for it often.

Batman has a voice tone, or grunts, that is reserved for Clark only. Fun fact, the JL unanimously agrees that Clark is the best at doing the Batman voice.

They founded the Justice League together, along with Wonder Woman and other team variations (usually with the Flash and the Green Lantern).

Even in AUs where they hate each other, or they've grown apart, they still respect one another.

They have multiple comic runs as a duo/partners: World's Finest and Superman/Batman.

In one of the runs above, Superman's cousin crashes to earth and both Batman and Superman become parental figures and argue about raising her until Wonder Woman intervenes. Again, they disagree, but it was more on execution of integrating Kara onto earth.

Anyway, the idea that these heroes hate each other isn't really, at least in my experience with other comic fans, common? Mass media (such as films and video games) has a weird attachment to turning Superman into a villain to fight the allegations that he's boring, but he's actually a compelling character if you (general you, me @ the WB execs.) can get past the weird power-obsession and enjoy characters for their depth.

That said, while I do ship superbats, I have a deep appreciation for the women in their lives, especially Selina (who is able to recognize her feelings for Bruce and how they may not be good for one another) and Lois (who is such a fierce character on her own). They add so much to Batman and Superman respectively, so I whenever I talk about Superman and Batman, I make sure to mention this too.

It's important to me, especially in this ship to emphasize that it's not just about kissing the pain away, but understanding the depth and the history that comes with this relationship. Also, not erasing women for the sake of the ship, too.

Final disclaimer: comics have so many different versions, timelines and resets that someone can easily swoop in and prove me wrong, so please take everything above as my way of enjoying the comics.

YOU'RE ALL SO KIND HERE........ I ABSOLUTELY DO!!!!! Granted I only started the comics last week and just got to shattered grid yesterday, I am still absolutely insane over it.

I was NOT expecting these comics to be as well written as they are. I love the shows as much as the next person but there are certainly hit or miss seasons and a lot of it is toned down for the kid audience, but the comics have NONE of that. Mmpr especially has a much more serious tone,(granted I haven't gotten that far into ggpr yet bc of the reading order I'm following) and it's so refreshing to see. Like Tommy has Trauma from his time under Rita and having that loss of control and being made to hurt people, that AFFECTED him and it's shown! Rita literally Haunts him and it's so good.

We see so much more of the team dynamics and I LOVE IT!! Don't even get me started on Trini and Billy because they are the best of friends and learn so much from each other, there's so much trust and love there it makes me insane. Zach and Jason's relationship is so sweet too because they care about each other even if it's not said, it's shown through actions. Zach regularly comes to check on Jason while he's at HQ burning himself out and Zach says it's because he was bored, or just wanted to train, but he and Jason know it's because he's worried about him and doesn't want to leave him alone. Neither of them are all that open with their emotions but they're still so There for each other. This team is everything to me because they're just so close.

And now the first shattered grid issue...... dude... DUDE. I was CRYING!!! Time force is my favourite all time team so I got so excited when they showed up and OW.....??????? I don't know what that crack did to the team but I am hoping so hard that at the very least Lucas, Katie and Trip are alive. I also have hope about Wes but that may just be denial....... he's one of my favourite red rangers I'm sure he has plot armour or something. And JEN.... I have that full page panel of her w/ Kimberly and Tommy as my lockscreen because it's so.... everything to me. Jen is an Adult with experience in the field as a time force officer and as a power ranger and she's holding it together because she's the only one who knows what's going on and she has to be strong for these Teenagers looking up to her. They just lost one of their own and the universe is at stake, and they're just Kids. Jen just lost her team and her LOVER but she has to be strong for them right now. I don't know.... Jen and her grief. She's one of the most well written power rangers characters and it shows!!!!

I have a lot more I could say (LORD DRAKKON...?!?!??) but it's pretty late rn and I'm probably forgetting somethings but I'm SO excited to get into the comics more

ASM ISSUE 30. I HAVE OPINIONS. SIT DOWN.

I told you I was gonna review any issues that are vaguely superior spidey related and that includes this one. And this one was certainly intriguing! Intresting ideas, the issues it has just stem from the entire run itself sooooo

So here we goo- superior spidey (but like the bootleg)

So here's the things I do like:

Superiors memories, or whatever echo of them are in the arms do affect Peter and while it was brief it was pretty fun. I like how Peter's posture shifts to look like Superiors (in like one panel but shhhh)

Otto and Peter (bootleg superior edtion) bickering was kinda fun to see hshdhsh Thats a concept I kinda love hehsh,.z.

The arms try to sacrifice themselves for Peter in one panel. Me when sad character growth,.,. Nice to see them technically working together tho

It's pretty much confirmed now that superior is in those arms, probably just an echo of his memories, but it could also literally be him because of how aware the arms are and that's a bit freaky and now I feel bad

The implications behind whatever was left of superior in the arms trying to literally strangle doc ock, that's harrowing in context but a intresting concept they could use because man is gonna need some SERIOUS therapy when he gets out

Also also I love that the arms punch Norman every chance they get 100% the most superior spiderman thing they would do

Things I'm a bit iffy on:

Kinda weird that everyone still kinda treats the arms as pets. I mean Jameson does at least. I know we don't know for sure how the arms work with like, Doc's memories but if he is like, aware and sentient in there OOO MAN that makes this so much weirder. Free my boy and don't treat him like that

How the fuck does Peter not suspect somethings up with the arms seemingly containing a separate consciousness. Bro hasn't even really investigated them yet

All my other complaints aren't for this issue but rather complaints for the entire Zeb Wells run itself like Doc Ock back to being an evil goofy villain that needs to get beat up again (like can we not, he doesn't need that anymore) and also on a 10x worse note, reminding me that Zeb Wells killed Ms. Marvel for no reason. I know she'll be back alive soon ut she didn't have do die the way she did 4 issues ago and Aughhhh I cannot get into that rn do not start with me

But yeah those things aren't exactly complaints with this issue so YIPPEE MOVING ON

Yeah the only other thing I'll mention is what I talked about in my last couple of posts is that I'm a bit worried on how they are bringing superior back into the present without using time travel or clones (because giving the title back to og doc ock seems a bit out of the question cuz hes still evil for some reason ((I'll rant again if I go into that more)) but unfortunately that seems like it's the case rn)

It might not be that big an issue, I'll still read the new series when it comes out, but I'm just really hoping that they do him right. STILL EXCITED FOR OCTOBER THO YIPPEE NEW FOOD AND CONTENT LETS JUST HOPE ITS GOOD <3<3

...Okay so me and @cartyrs recently have a talk of the vibe of the manga rn (see here and here for the actual talk) in which we both kind of agree the whole Undertaker setting up a orphanage that sacrifices children for blood donations for Doll (in which I ask WHY KILL THE CHILDREN AND NOT DO WHAT ANA DID AND GET THE DONATIONS VIA MEDICAL SHIT-) while building the kids up to be like OCiel, Sebastian, the other servants, and maybe Doll is a bit weird and doesn't fully make sense, but seeing the final face shown panel of Artie is straight Sebastian!

1. in the right panel you can see how much nancy wants to re-affirm him of everything he's done for her with a confession, you can see it on her face, when she tells him that he never lacked in her eyes, all she wants to do is live out her life with him and affirm him of how much him being just the way he is means to her - how perfect he is, how long withstanding, how unconditional - you can see it break her that she can't lie in bed with him and tell everything he is is enough. that she could never imaging loving a man that wasn't her best friend and one of the most intelligent and loving men she's gotten the pleasure of knowing

2. you can see ace just needing that reassurance FUCK you can see it on his face!!!!!! you can see how much he needs this confession, of how much he's being trying to fight all of these mounting insecurities and fears on his own, and how much the right words from nancy could make that fight easier, the fact that they were always meant to be, the fact that them coming together in that moment would have been affirmation enough, would have been waiting enough, for a lifetime of support from the woman he not only loves, but reveres. to crave validation his entire life and find purpose in himself and caring for someone else but never feeling enough, all that yearning and longing for nancy is just a bigg fucking angst fest in this scene, and only three words from nancy take to somewhat ease it

3. YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH THEY LOVE EACH OTHER IN THAT SCENE, HOW MUCH THEY BELIEVE IN ONE AND OTHER, how much nancy just fucking loves him, unconditionally, wholly and without any change to the man he is. and how much it kills them that she can't say it.

You believe Knightfall to be impossible?

No.

I consider what kind of story the show is interested in telling and what seems like the obvious (or not) narrative path based on other stories to come to this conclusion.

Knightfall would be very, very unique if it were the path chosen. Cindemption alone is great, because when one talks about redemption arcs one gets people who don't understand why Vader died (parental sacrifice) or people who bring up Zuko as if you can only have one or two redemption arcs in media (both in number and type of structure) and so her story arc is actually fucking new and interesting. (I'm thinking particularly here of the type of villainess she is, especially as a Byronic hero lol).

But Knightfall has so much flavour to it I've never really seen in any other ship. The male healer, the female villainness, but she's structurally a protagonist, so he's like - the pretty boy love interest - but carries a lot of agency in the story! Angst, pain, worldviews challenged - like he's the first to do that in the story, asking her why she is the way she is, he ironically learns from her to ditch the self-sacrificing agenda - there's so much that's interesting about it I've never really found in another ship before. I could go on all day, and this isn't a Knightfall manifesto, but there really isn't anything like it.

I think so far the show has proven it's willing to be bold, and that's one of the things I admire about it. So when I think about viability of the ship I also consider that we should take the text on its own terms and its intertextuality (though in this respect I think occasionally people afford too much importance to source texts - including me). In doing that I think canon ships like BB and RN are very obvious (BB here doing some heavylifting with Beauty and the Beast, which is a case of where the fairytale stuff is actually relevant), whereas in the case of BB it would've been easy to read Blake/Sun, because guy gets girl, right lol.

In terms of in-universe, I don't think it's impossible, no, not if they've already committed to telling it and not if they've already committed to Cindemption, there's probably just going to be delicious angst and conflict. Which is why it's the most interesting, and I think complements the other ships in the show well.

That and the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation which can be explored through it (which the show seems most interested in doing - its narrative really isn't punitive) really resonate with me personally and I think align with what the story has already demonstrated.

When I think about points against it - the narrative beaten path like Jaune/Weiss, reformed guy gets girl he patiently waited for (fetch me a bucket), there’s one thing here I want to put in but I’m not going to vague about it lol, they're on the island together and fell one after the other etc. - I do think the coin is in the air right now. That ship breaks so many ship patterns though, so I'm dubious. I'm also a baby with a soft heart who can't handle being hurt so I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Though on that falling point, Cinder and Jaune were the last two out of the Vacuo portal, so what patterns are you willing to look for? Everything looks like a nail when one has a hammer.

That's why I'm always willing to couch my interpretation in scepticism. That being said, there is too much that's suspicious about Rhodopis, The Indecisive King, the given ship patterning, (what was going on with that manga panel), the anima/animus stuff, the Fall Maiden's lesson (pay attention to that post title), Reverse Salem/Ozma (and this one I think is significant in the respect of what is the actual superstructure of the story and why it's being told) and so on and so forth for me to ignore. It's just too much. So I oscillate regarding the possibility of it because I am baby, but nevertheless my attention does not stray from the ship. It interests me in the respect of wanting to unpack the story's engine and figure out to what degree they actually insert esoteric references into the story, what matters the most in how they tell the story (and the irony is that the show is really telling its own story first and foremost) etc. I have a curiosity about it.

Especially because it seems so fucking obvious if you're willing to look. I don't just mean their narratives being connected platonically, I mean romantically. Like what is going on! I feel like I'm going crazy!

From my understanding, Rachel has worked and been a feature of the other two’s life waaaaay before the society, like that…has to be like 10-8 years of friendship at most. Like it’s a rough estimate but like…I can’t help but imagine for a long time there must have just been Rachel, Henry, and Lanyon. She’s practically a founding meme her of the society in all but name on the deed. It’s clear from the first page she’s introduced that she’s a friend not an employee and seems to have been for a long time as I doubt not a lot of people could threaten their employer covered in blood with a knife and have him laugh it off. On some level, she must believe in the mission or Jekyll has always been careful even as he drowns in debt to keep Rachel paid.

Like well probably get it at one point (at least I think since I don’t really see an end for tgs rn even if the exhibition is right around the corner, too many personal loose ends for me to say “well after that it will be done,” which is a feeling I feel like makes me a bit of a black sheep. Like idk? Does this feel like it’s wrapping up to you?) but I do think just by the way we are told backstory only Sabrina’s writing we will see anytime from the deepest of Henry’s depression through Rachel’s eyes as well as any early Hyde things because I feel like with flash backs Sabrina likes having them be told through a biased individual but obviously since tgs is a visual medium we are aloud to see the discrepancies like with how during the break up Lanyon looks pained in one panel and a lot of people inferred that he was hoping Henry would refute him instead of allowing his jab at Henry about liking random women more than him seemingly be proven true. I just really like Sabrina’s writing, lot of tgs is flashback but like I don’t care what anyone says I’m here for the interpersonal drama and I do think more and more the tentpoles of that drama are the main four protagonists holding this story together with an iron grip. Like poles on a table (Henry and Hyde are one pole)

Rachel is the day manager so, even if she's not a founder, she's still a decently big deal in the society - she could easily have been one of the first three working there between Lanyon and Jekyll, it's just that there hasn't been any sign of her at university just yet so it feels like they met some other way (Unless we're going to see her too soon.) I really hope to see how Rachel was introduced to Lanyon and Jekyll at some point in some way.

I'm pretty sure that the comic isn't wrapping up just yet. I don't recall exactly how many chapters TGS was supposed to be but, if I remember correctly, there are at least a few more coming. It's more likely that the exhibition is going to be some sort of climax in the story rather than an ending.

We're probably going to see the depression situation through someone else's eyes eventually whether via Rachel or someone else.

Sabrina's writing really is good and I do enjoy seeing interpersonal relationships! Romantic drama like fights isn't particularly my thing but Lanyon meeting Jekyll under a table and dragging him into lying for him (and potentially getting very Scottish Jekyll) certainly is!

Lol Majestic is all "Alright guys, time to stop depending on a bunch of children and actually do our job now." I cannot with this manga lmfao.

We aren't getting to see them fight tho cause we immediate cut back to the Jakku ruins and I'm almost scared to find out what happened.

Tomura looks terrible. Those lines look an awful lot like the ones Nine had in the final fight. Does that mean Shigaraki's dying? Or is he preparing to break through Erasure and use his quirks? Or maybe both? Actually, now that i look more closely, he doesn't have them in the top panels. So it is like Nine then. Interesting.

Enji is literally smoking. Did he overuse his quirk to the point where he actually burned himself?

Also it looks like Tomura hit a little to close to home for Enji's liking. And by 'little' I mean he bulldozed over it.

This chapter was a rollercoaster of feels. I'm glad Horikoshi honoured our deal of not killing the children. Can't wait to see what happens with Tomura next chapter.

Pt 1) I'm ngl, if this Ric Grayson arc ends with Dick finally going off on the rest of the batfam for only showing him affection when they need something, it will almost be worth it. You mentioned in the meta about his relationship with the batfam that to recover from the gunshot he cut every one off (ngl, I stopped reading as soon as his memories were wiped), and I think that means now is the perfect time (or when his memories finally return fully next issue) for him to blow up

Pt 2) I want him to go off on Bruce for never seeming satisfied with what he does. I want him to go off on Tim for running away when everything was going to shit while Bruce was stuck in time (there's evidence that he remembers pre reboot stuff with that one panel that has torque and tarantula and him proposing to Babs so I'm going to say that's all still canon). I want him to lose his shit with Babs for constantly being mad at him when he's trying so hard (I love Babs, but this is annoying)

Pt 3) when he gets his memories back I want him to finally blow up. Like??? His life has been in a constant state of falling apart since he became Nightwing (hell, even before that), but he still always put others first. And now Roy is dead, Donna is evil, Wally is who knows where after killing Roy, Jason and Bruce are back on the outs, etc, etc and people were saying they need him back to fix things when he's recovering from being shot in the head. If they let him point this out, the Ric arc

Pt 4) will have been validated in my eyes. Still fucking terrible writing wise, execution (I was excited for Talon! Dick but christ what I read of it was bad), one of the worst decisions they've made recently, and they've made a bunch of bad ones, but it will be validated in its existence to me.

Yeah, Dick takes a lot of crap from the members of his family; a lot of the things you listed are things that I am very much not a fan of, lmao. And I’d even add that, with the Ric stuff you mention, it wasn’t even that Dick “cut everyone off” so that he could recover; I should have made this clearer--Bruce and the rest of the family should take a lot of the blame for pushing Dick away. See, initially, Dick was open to the idea of getting to know his family. He visited the manor and then Bruce, impatient with the lack of progress Dick was making on regaining his memories, decided to take Dick down to the Batcave, show him the Nightwing suit (that still had the freaking blood from the gunshot wound on it Jesus Christ), and traumatize Dick with the video of him getting shot in the head in order to stir up some memories. Alfred and Damian help Bruce do this:

And Dick is obviously horrified. After this, why in the world would Dick want to be Nightwing? Why would he want to associate with his “family”? Staying away from the manor wasn’t Dick cutting out people in his life who cared for him and were trying to help him; it was about, in Dick’s mind, staying away from people who were willing to hurt him, people who cared more about his utility and how they needed him to be Nightwing then they cared about his safety and wellbeing. It was a desperate move to protect himself from people he could no longer trust. It is clear that implanted false memories and other brainwashing was done from the very beginning (by the doctor Bruce specifically hired no less) in order to ensure that “Ric” would not be comfortable with Bruce and would be inclined to leave, but it was Bruce’s actions that had Dick running literally right into his brainwasher’s arms: 

It’s also not even like afterwards Dick hid himself in some unknown location, completely out of contact. Barbara easily tracked Dick down to talk. And yet, when Barbara talks to him, she doesn’t ask Dick if he’s alright. She just tells him that they want him to regain his memories (umm...yeah you’ve made that clear), comments that he’s not acting like himself, and tells him to come back to the manor. So...it’s all about what the family wants. Dick says no, and there are zero attempts at a compromise. Maybe the family could have used the millions of dollars at its disposal to set Dick up elsewhere outside the manor so he doesn’t have to, uh, live in a cab? Maybe they could agree to occasional check-ins instead of the overbearing babysitting they were suggesting, that Dick is uncomfortable with? Maybe they could ask Dick what he wants? But, no. As soon as Dick doesn’t do exactly what they want him to, he’s on his own. People talk about how this arc is making Dick look bad, but beyond that, really it's making all of the family look like uncaring, selfish assholes. 

That aside, about how I want this arc to conclude...it would be nice, as readers, to see Dick finally put his foot down and stand up for himself a little. But honestly? Him going off on everyone like you describe? I feel like that would be out of character. I could maybe see Dick telling off Batman, but I can’t even imagine Dick truly blowing up at Damian or Tim, or really even Barbara. People really over exaggerate Dick’s temper a lot; in reality, it usually takes very extreme circumstances, and often an insane amount of stress and/or brainwashing to make Dick lash out. Bruce is one of the few people that can make Dick lose his temper, so maybe. But I also think that when Dick is truly upset and emotionally compromised, his first move is to go somewhere to be alone. He doesn’t tend to lash out; he tends to retreat and isolate himself if he’s able. You’ll often see him hole himself in his apartment when everything becomes too much. Two good examples of this are in Joker’s Last Laugh and in the Outsiders. After Dick kills the Joker, he immediately retreats to his apartment to be alone, and likewise after Donna dies, he spends months isolated from his friends in Bludhaven:

And not only all that, but I really don’t think Dick yelling at everyone would be cathartic for him. If he did something like that, he’d feel terrible and guilty about it. He’d apologize. And I really don’t want him to have to apologize for anything in the aftermath of all this horrible stuff he’s been through. I don’t want any of the responsibility for making things right to be put on his shoulders. Though he’ll probably feel the need to try to fix things anyway, I’d actually prefer him to just...stay away from the family. Not avoid them, but let them be the ones to reach out to him for a change. Especially recently, Dick has had to do all the emotional work in his relationships; it would be so gratifying to have his friends and family put the work in on their own and be the ones to initiate so Dick doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting. 

And hey, I’d love even more for one of the numerous friends he used to have to step in and stand up for him instead, so he doesn’t have to. If the rest of the Titans were not currently being put through depressing arcs themselves (or being dead, RIP Roy), I think they definitely would’ve knocked some heads together. I think the only possible solution...is Uncle Clark coming to the rescue! Surely if Superman knew what was going on, he’d come down to the cave and give a good old fashioned tongue lashing to Batman for his pseudo-nephew’s sake! I’m not caught up with the Superman comics so idk what he’s up to rn, but please tell me this can happen and if not let me dream.

Thanks for the ask! I feel your pain, was pretty disappointed with Talon Dick. I really want to just reach into the comics and wrap Dick up in a blanket or something, give him rest!
