Woo! The big one, the magnum opus. There's so much I could talk about with this one.

I guess I can start with the beginning. As I've said often, I started this fic out of spite and being mad GW wasn't giving me a necron civil war (this was months before the new pariah nexus campaign book, but even that barely gives us anything so I remain justified). And I knew I wanted more attention on characters like Imotekh, who are so important but have no presence in the books. So the project was in my head, but generally I need big moments or scenes to write towards. I'm a bit of a goalpost writer. Once I have a strong scene idea or three, I can start.

The first strong moment in my head was the point in Chapter 2 when Imotekh barges into Szarekh's throne room and tosses a praetorian's head at his feet. I then geared the opening towards making that happen. Kind of fitting that this story started with the Stormlord demanding his due XD He's easily one of my favorite character's to write (sorry Szarekh, I love you too!). Balancing his cruelty with practicality and also selling his sheer presence is a fun challenge, especially since this is my first time experimenting with...shall we say "morally dubious" protagonists. This version of him also really feels like "mine" if that makes sense? I'm not basing him off another author's work like I am with Trazyn or Oltyx or even Anrakyr. I had a character description, a few quotes, and two anecdotes. And I'm proud of how I built him up out of that.

Also yes, one of the scenes I am writing towards is the ending. I made sure I knew the conclusion of this before I started. Without that I know I would have lost track of the plot and this story would have become very meandering. It's hard enough focusing on the big picture when each chapter almost feels like it's own story and each POV character has a personal arc to manage. I desperately need my north star to navigate by!

Some ff7 OC refs I threw together for myself! They're all used in the fic I've been writing which I plan to start sharing before the summer is over. They are Aura Golden's new coworkers.

From left to right:

Darian (he/him, age 45), Mengyao (she/her, age 25), Rigel (he/him) and Rachel (she/her) (identical twins, 19, one of them is trans!), and Xavier (he/him, 29)

Darian is the manager of this group + Aura, who are a special team of scientists called the "S Team" (more on this in fic). He was a very successful military general for Shinra, but the experience left him physically and emotionally scarred, and at some point Heidegger forced him to take the fall for a botched operation, leading to him being severely sidelined. He is aromantic, and uses his wealth from working for Shinra to house and support his mother, as well as his sister and her husband and kids. All of them live together. For an ex-military general, he is a very compassionate individual, and excels in effective communication and resource management.

Mengyao is daughter to Wutaian immigrants. She loves women and nonbinary people (jury is out on her feelings towards men because I have not decided). She previously worked under Hojo preparing and maintaining the machines he needed to do his experiments. She has experienced a significant amount of racism in Midgar and in her career. Others in Hojo's labs bullied her, but despite this she continued to gain accolades with her work, and she is a determined person who never gives up, despite her meek and quiet appearance.

Rigel and Rachel are identical twins, who were orphans taken in by Shinra at a young age. They were born with the unique ability to communicate instantly via telepathy. They were stealing to live when Shinra eventually caught them. Rachel became a SOLDIER, and a favorite lab rat of Hojo's, reaching Second class. Rigel was machinery maintenance worker under Heidegger for the Roboguard (autonomous robots). He learned a great deal about how they worked, and occasionally made his own upgrades in secret. Rachel is quick to anger and snark at folks. Rigel struggles to express emotions on his face, giving him a perpetual resting bitch face, but he is actually very compassionate and far gentler than his sister.

Xavier worked under Scarlet. He is from a relatively well to-do plate family, and is a talented materia research. He does have a bad habit of poking peoples' buttons when he shouldn't, and this eventually led to Scarlet losing patience with him and almost killing him in a burst of rage. When he recovered from this, he found he had been transferred to Hojo to work on mass materia production with no research elements. This did not put a dent in his chipper attitude or his mischievous nature. Outside of Darian, he is the only extrovert within the S Team, and it shows, as he has a knack for bringing people together (when he isn't needling them, that is).

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
