Thinking about "So Long, London" as one does and the "I'm pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free" which is devastating enough on its own as a succinct shorthand of saying "I gave you some of my most formative years thinking we were committed to the same life plans together" (as in building a family life together) but with ~everything~ can also be a statement of her entrusting him with her youthful hopes and dreams and joy and earnestness only for it all to be cast aside and not returned (and at worst, weaponized).
#especially after everything she went through before they met#that it would have taken a lot for her to let someone in#and trust in them#and reconnect with that side of herself#and you compare her demeanour in 2017-2022#to how she is now#and it's like a completely different world#and there are a lot of reasons for that and not just *** don't get me wrong#but you see the way she - to quote a certain someone - has such a love of life#and is so earnest in everything she does#and the way she is present in the world now is way more like her teenage self than how she'd been in the last decade#and not in terms of maturity because she's clearly a grownup#but just in her zest for life and her embracing of who she is#idk idk it's a lot#writing letters addressed to the fire#this will flop because it's the middle of the afternoon during a show day but i had to get it off my chest

More then enough 🦽
Mapi León x reader x Ingrid Engen
warning : disability 🕶🦻
Summary :
Being a wheelchair user, you're afraid your girlfriends will love you less.
The sun dipped low over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the pitch. The girls had just finished their training session, and Mapi and Ingrid stood by the sidelines, both laughing and chatting as they packed up their gear. The atmosphere around them was warm and light, hearted, despite the hard work they’d put in. But their eyes constantly flickered over to the stands, where you sat, watching with your usual gentle smile.
You had been in their life for a while now, ever since you met Mapi at a charity event she attended a few months ago. You were disabled, using a wheelchair after a car accident left you unable to walk, but that never stopped you from living fully, embracing every moment with joy and a sense of adventure. Mapi had been drawn to that strength in you, the way you approached life with so much heart despite everything you'd gone through.
The three of you had clicked almost immediately. Mapi's fierce energy, Ingrid's calm, soothing nature, and your own witty humor and zest for life had created the perfect dynamic. Mapi was fiery and protective, always making sure you felt included and cared for, while Ingrid’s gentleness brought a comforting peace, like a calming wave that soothed all your worries.
Today, as you waited for them to finish their session, you couldn’t help but feel a little self-conscious. Though you tried not to let your disability affect your confidence, there were days when you wondered if you were enough for them. Two incredible athletes, constantly moving and living in ways you could no longer do.
As you looked down at your hands, lost in thought, Mapi’s voice pulled you from your reverie.
- Holà, cariño, what are you thinking about?
You glanced up, finding both Mapi and Ingrid now standing in front of you, their eyes full of concern. Mapi knelt down to be at your eye level, while Ingrid took her place beside you, gently resting a hand on your shoulder. You hesitated before answering, biting your lip.
- Just… wondering if you guys ever feel like you’re missing out, being with me. You’re always on the go, always so active, and I—well, I can’t do the things you do.
Mapi's brows furrowed, and her hands found yours, gripping them tightly.
- Don’t say that. You’re never a burden, cariño. We don’t want you to be anyone else. We love you exactly as you are.
Ingrid nodded, her voice soft but firm.
- It’s true. We’ve never thought about what we’re missing because you’re everything we need. You bring so much light into our lives.
Tears welled in your eyes, but you blinked them away, laughing softly.
- You two are too much. I don’t deserve you.
Mapi shook her head, a playful smirk on her lips.
- Nonsense. You deserve everything. And you’ve got us, so you must be doing something right.
Ingrid smiled, leaning in to press a soft kiss to your temple.
- We’re a team, remember? We’re in this together.
You let out a breath, the weight on your chest lifting slightly. With them by your side, things always seemed brighter, and you never felt alone. You didn’t need to be anyone else but yourself, they loved you for who you were.
As the three of you sat there, the cool breeze brushing against your skin, Mapi suddenly jumped to her feet with a mischievous grin.
- Alright, enough of this sappy stuff. How about a game?
You looked at her, confused.
- A game? What kind of game?
She pointed to a nearby soccer ball.
- We’re gonna play a little football.
Your eyes widened.
- I can’t play football, Mapi.
- Why not?
She challenged, already grabbing the ball.
- We’ll modify the rules. You will be a goalie so you can stay in your chair, and Ingrid and I will try to score. First one to five wins.
You couldn’t help but laugh at her stubbornness. You rolled your eyes playfully.
- You are impossible.
Mapi kicked the ball gently toward you.
- Come on, love, show us what you’ve got.
And so, the three of you played. It wasn’t about skill or competition. It was about fun, about laughter, about being together. You quickly realized that it didn’t matter that you were in a wheelchair. Mapi and Ingrid didn’t care about what you couldn’t do. They only cared about spending time with you, making memories, and showing you just how much they adored you.
As the sun set, and the last goal was scored (you might have let Ingrid win, just for the look of joy on her face), the three of you collapsed onto the grass, breathless from laughter and exertion. Mapi lay beside you, her arm slung across your lap, while Ingrid rested her head on your shoulder.
- See?
Mapi said between breaths.
- Told you you could play.
You smiled, looking down at her. As the night settled around you, you realized that in their love, there was no place for doubt. With them, you were whole. You were perfect. And most importantly, you were loved just as you were.

In the heart of the lush forests of Forks, the Cullen family existed as a unique coven of vampires who sought to lead a life far removed from their bloodthirsty nature. Among them was Emmett Cullen, known for his boisterous laughter and zest for life. He was a beacon of energy and strength within the family, his larger-than-life personality a stark contrast to his supernatural abilities.
However, it was a quiet and unassuming presence that would forever change the course of Emmett's existence. (Y/N), a human woman with an unbreakable spirit, had captured his heart in ways he never thought possible.
(Y/N) had been through more than most in her short life. A childhood accident had stolen her ability to speak, rendering her voiceless. Yet, her vibrant eyes spoke volumes, and the grace with which she moved resonated with the essence of her character.
It was during a chance encounter in the small town of Forks that Emmett first saw (Y/N). She was sitting on a park bench, reading a book, her fingers delicately tracing the words as if to hold onto every sentence. Intrigued by her quiet demeanor, Emmett approached, and as their eyes met, a connection sparked between them that transcended words.
(Y/N)'s accident had robbed her of her voice, but it hadn't taken away her ability to communicate. With the delicate yet deliberate movements of her hands, she wove intricate patterns in the air - a language known only to those who understood the power of silence. Emmett, captivated by this unique form of communication, found himself drawn into a world where words were unnecessary.
As days turned into weeks, Emmett and (Y/N)'s bond deepened. Their connection was formed through the silent exchange of signs, each movement carrying a weight of emotion that words could never convey. (Y/N) showed Emmett the beauty of patience and understanding, while Emmett brought laughter and adventure into her life.
The Cullen family embraced (Y/N) as one of their own, her presence bringing a sense of tranquility to their immortal existence. Alice, with her visions, often foresaw moments of joy between Emmett and (Y/N), and Jasper, with his empathy, felt the genuine love that radiated between them. Even Rosalie, known for her guarded nature, found herself warming to (Y/N)'s genuine spirit.
As their relationship flourished, the Cullens marveled at the profound connection Emmett and (Y/N) shared. They watched as the two of them communicated through touch, through shared glances, and through the intimate dance of their fingers in the air. The family respected and cherished this unique bond that transcended the limitations of speech.
And so, in the heart of the Cullen family's haven, an unconventional love story was written. Emmett and (Y/N) proved that words were not the only means of conveying love, and that sometimes, the most profound connections were formed through silence - through the quiet whispers of the heart.
Within the tranquil embrace of the Cullen family home, Emmett and (Y/N)'s bond continued to flourish. Their love story unfolded through gestures and expressions that spoke to the depth of their connection.
Emmett's boisterous laughter and playful antics were matched by (Y/N)'s radiant smiles and the light that danced within her eyes. He would often invent wild stories, acting them out with exaggerated gestures that made (Y/N) giggle in response. In return, (Y/N) would share her thoughts and feelings through a symphony of delicate hand movements, her eloquence in sign language surpassing the limitations of spoken words.
The Cullen family marveled at the harmony that Emmett and (Y/N) brought to their midst. Esme, the nurturing matriarch, had a soft spot for their unique relationship, seeing the purity of their connection as a testament to the power of love itself. Carlisle, the patriarch, respected the understanding they shared, acknowledging that true communication extended far beyond verbal expression.
Alice's visions of their future were painted with joy and warmth, while Jasper felt the serenity that emanated from their union, a tranquility that often eluded even the most harmonious of couples. Even Edward, with his mind-reading abilities, could not grasp the full depth of their emotions, for their love existed in a realm untouched by words.
As time went on, (Y/N) became an integral part of the Cullen family, her presence weaving seamlessly into their immortal lives. She brought a sense of serenity that balanced the frenetic energy of her vampire companions. The family gathered around as Emmett and (Y/N) recounted their adventures with animated gestures and subtle touches, their joy infectious and genuine.
But as with any love story, challenges arose that put their bond to the test. A threat from the outside world loomed, casting shadows over their peaceful existence. The Cullens' sanctuary faced danger, and the unity they had fostered was put in jeopardy.
Emmett's protective nature flared, a fierce determination in his eyes as he vowed to shield (Y/N) from harm. And through the intricate language of signs, she assured him that she was by his side, ready to face whatever challenges came their way.
As the Cullen family rallied together to protect their home, Emmett and (Y/N)'s silent communication proved to be an asset, allowing them to strategize and coordinate with a precision that transcended spoken words. The battles they fought were not only physical but also emotional, as they navigated the turmoil while leaning on the strength of their connection.
And so, as twilight bathed the tranquil forest in shades of gold, the Cullen family and their unique couple stood together, united against the storm that raged both within and around them. The echoes of emotion that passed between Emmett and (Y/N) resonated with a love that needed no spoken words to be understood. As they faced the trials ahead, their silent bond remained unbreakable, a testament to the enduring power of love and the strength found in shared silence.
As the threat to the Cullen family grew, so did Emmett's determination to protect (Y/N). He had witnessed firsthand the dangers that lurked in their supernatural world, and the thought of leaving her vulnerable and alone, especially considering her inability to call for help, was something he couldn't bear. He knew he couldn't protect her indefinitely as a human, and a sense of urgency pushed him to consider an unconventional solution.
One evening, as twilight painted the sky with hues of orange and pink, Emmett led (Y/N) to a quiet corner of the Cullen family home. He looked into her eyes, his expression serious yet filled with concern. Using the fluid language of sign, he conveyed his thoughts to her, his fingers forming each word with care.
"(Y/N), love," he began, his hands moving gracefully, "I can't stand the thought of you being in danger. I won't leave you unprotected like Edward did to Bella. I want to keep you safe."
He continued to explain his plan - the idea that (Y/N) could become a vampire, a creature like them, impervious to harm and capable of defending herself. His eyes held a mix of worry and hope, his love for her evident in every gesture he made.
(Y/N)'s heart swelled with emotion as she listened to Emmett's proposal. The idea of becoming a vampire was both daunting and enticing. She had already embraced the supernatural world through her relationship with Emmett and the Cullens, and the prospect of eternal life by his side seemed like a gift she couldn't refuse.
With a soft smile, she signed her response, her fingers moving in delicate patterns. "I agree. I want to be with you, Emmett, no matter the form."
Emmett's eyes lit up with relief and joy, his heart swelling at her willingness to share eternity with him. He took her hands in his, pressing a gentle kiss to her knuckles. Their silent exchange spoke volumes, a testament to the depth of their bond.
With their decision made, they turned to Carlisle, the family's patriarch and a skilled doctor who had experience in transforming humans into vampires. He led them through the process, explaining the changes that would occur and the challenges they would face.
For (Y/N), the transformation was a journey of physical and emotional trials. She faced pain and power, vulnerability and strength, as her human life faded away and her vampiric existence began. Emmett stood by her side through every step, offering his unwavering support and reassurance, their silent communication speaking louder than words ever could.
As the transformation neared its completion, (Y/N) felt the rush of new senses and abilities course through her, her body adjusting to its immortal form. Her eyes opened to a world painted in vivid colors and heightened details, a realm she had only glimpsed through Emmett's descriptions.
And as the first rays of dawn bathed the room in light, (Y/N) opened her newly enhanced eyes to lock onto Emmett's gaze. In that moment, their silent connection spoke of a love that had transcended the boundaries of time and form, a bond that was now sealed for eternity.
With a tender smile, Emmett extended his hand to her, his fingers inviting her to join him in this new existence. She reached out and took his hand, their fingers intertwining, a silent promise exchanged between them.
And so, as the sun's rays touched their skin, the journey of a new life began - one filled with challenges and triumphs, shared by a couple whose love had conquered the limitations of sound and words. In the embrace of their family and each other, they faced the future with a strength that defied the silence that once defined them.
In the days following (Y/N)'s transformation, a sense of renewal and exhilaration coursed through her veins. She marveled at the new world around her, her senses heightened to levels she had never imagined. The bond between her and Emmett seemed to have deepened, the unspoken connection between them now accompanied by a symphony of shared experiences.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon and the Cullen family gathered, a hush fell over the room. Emmett and (Y/N) stood at the center, their hands entwined. The air was charged with a palpable energy, a feeling that something extraordinary was about to unfold.
As everyone's eyes turned toward (Y/N), she took a deep breath, feeling a newfound strength coursing through her. And then, to the astonishment of all, she began to speak.
"Thank you," her voice, melodious and clear, filled the room, resonating with an ethereal quality that left everyone speechless. The sound was as enchanting as it was unexpected, a testament to the transformative power of their supernatural world.
Emmett's eyes widened in awe, his grip on her hand tightening as he listened to her speak for the first time. The joy that radiated from him was infectious, his laughter bubbling up like a spring of unrestrained happiness.
The Cullen family exchanged astonished glances, their eyes filled with wonder and amazement. Edward, whose mind-reading abilities were unparalleled, couldn't help but smile as he realized the extent of the change that had occurred within (Y/N). Alice's visions had not foreseen this, a delightful surprise that warmed her heart.
"(Y/N), your voice," Esme's eyes glistened with tears of happiness, her motherly love radiating through the room. "It's beautiful."
Carlisle, who had been studying (Y/N)'s transformation with a scientist's curiosity, stepped forward, his expression one of genuine awe. "It appears that your vocal cords have been restored during the transformation," he mused, a mix of fascination and delight in his voice.
As the room filled with applause and exclamations of joy, (Y/N) felt a sense of liberation she had never known. She shared laughter with Alice, exchanged words of friendship with Jasper, and even engaged in conversation with Edward, her voice a gift that allowed her to fully participate in the world around her.
But it was Emmett's reaction that touched her heart the most. His eyes shone with unbridled pride and love, his arms enveloping her in an embrace that spoke of a connection that had grown even stronger. They shared whispered words of love, their voices now harmonizing in a way that seemed to echo the bond they had always shared.
In that moment, the Cullen family celebrated not only the transformation of (Y/N) into a vampire but also the rebirth of her voice. Her words became a melody that resonated through the hearts of all who heard, a reminder of the remarkable journey that had brought her into their supernatural world.
And as the stars painted the night sky with their brilliance, the Cullen family reveled in the beauty of (Y/N)'s newfound voice, a testament to the enduring power of love and the extraordinary transformations that were possible within their extraordinary world.

I think it's easy to forget just exactly what Ava went through. She was SEVEN years old and woke up in strange place, with cranky old nuns, only to find out she was paralyzed and that her mom had died. Not only that, but no other member of her family ever came for her. Nobody was looking for her, nobody wanted her and suddenly she's all alone and dealing with the loss of her mothre and her independence.
You'd think, oh well maybe she has a support system in the orphanage? Nope, they treat her like shit, like the burden she believes she is. As someone who has been in a wheelchair their whole life, let me tell you, feeling like a burden is an everyday thing. You’re not, and having people who remind you that you’re not and make you understand that you’re not is beautiful, but Ava didn’t have that. She had Sister Frances, who went out of her way to tell Ava she was worthless and I doubt anyone else there was much better.
So it's no wonder Ava was a sarcastic, snarky little shit to the nuns in the orphanage - they made her that way. Being bratty to them was the only thing she could do to feel some semblance of control.
Flash forward to Ava's death, where she was literally murdered because nobody cared and there was nowhere for her to go. Ava spent twelve years in a personal hell of being trapped in her own body, was then killed like someone taking out the garbage. Empty, alone and tossed aside.
So when she was revived by the halo, with her legs suddenly working and freedom to do whatever she wanted, of COURSE she wanted to be free.
That's the entirety of Ava's character arc - SHE WANTS TO LIVE! She hasn't been able to for so long she barely remembers how to do it.
It's not that easy, of course, the halo carries a ton of weight and Ava fights it and runs from it and resists it as much as she can, and who can blame her? She finally gets the chance to be alive, to be free and enjoy life and all these strangers (who are everywhere becuase Ava is completely alone in the world) are pushing and pulling her in every direction. She's constantly told that she doesn't deserve the halo. Doesn't deserve this chance.
Despite ALL of that, Ava's heart is strong and her passion for life overshadows all the darkness she's been dealt. She isn't just full of life, but love. She's spent years not having anyone to love her, but more than that, she's never been able to give anyone her love and I think that's very important to her. We see it so much as the show goes on. Her softness with Mother Superion when she finds her halo scar, and the way she connects with Mary, Camila being sweet to her, little things like that.
Then of course there's Bea.
Beatrice, who never sees Ava as someone that needs to be replaced, but as someone who can be taught, trained and shaped into what they need. Who sees that Ava, the human being, has value and that she's worth protecting. They connect and share and for the first time, Ava has someone who actually accepts her as a person. Not a burden or a vessel for the halo, but Ava Silva, the girl inside that's been so alone for so long.
I think that's why Ava is so bouncy with Bea, falls for her so easily, because Beatrice saw Ava's zest for life and her need for love and embraced it. Saw it as something worth fighting for, beyond the halo or duty, Beatrice liked HER. Probably the first person who felt that way since her mother was taken from her (outside of Diego, but he was so young it couldn't have been the same).
Anyway, this long winded post that probably doesn't make any sense is just my way of saying that I love Ava. I love her joy and her humor. I love that she has had so much pain dumped on her and still chooses to smile. Given the way she was treated and the power she was given, Ava could have been a villain. She could have carried a hatred for god or the world and everyone in it who forgot about her but she didn't. Instead, she found the life and love she desperately wanted and gave up everything to protect it.
#ava silva#avatrice#warrior nun#this is my long overdue ava silva appreciation post#sometimes you just find characters that hit different and she's that for me#i'm not sure i'll find one i enjoy more than her#save warrior nun#alba baptista#she deserves all the awards for her performance of ava#she's INCREDIBLE

Echoes of Colombia
Chapter 1: The Vibrant Valley
Lucas, a travel journalist in his early 30s, found himself in the lush Cocora Valley of Colombia, with its towering wax palms and verdant hills, seeking stories of local charm and hidden gems. It was here, amid the vibrant greenery and the whispers of the Andean breeze, that he met Alejandra. With her long, flowing hair and a bright yellow top that matched the Colombian sun, Alejandra was a vision of resilience and youth. Despite losing her right leg above the knee, she exuded an aura of indomitable spirit, navigating the uneven paths with a single crutch.
Chapter 2: The Heart of Cartagena
Intrigued by her zest for life, Lucas invited Alejandra to join him on his travels. Their next stop was Cartagena, a city where the pastel hues of the buildings danced with the cobblestone streets. As they explored the old town, with its balconies draped in bougainvillea, Lucas learned about Alejandra's dreams and the accident that changed her life. The city's blend of historical beauty and Alejandra's modern vibrancy created a backdrop for their unfolding story.
Chapter 3: The Rhythms of Rio
Their journey took them next to the spirited streets of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the samba rhythms filled the air. Here, Alejandra's carefree laughter mingled with the carnival tunes, her crutch becoming less of a support and more of a dance partner. Lucas found himself falling for her, drawn to her strength and the way she found joy in every moment. Yet, he grappled with his attraction, wondering if it was tainted by his unexplored fascination with her amputation.
Chapter 4: Confessions in Buenos Aires
Under the argent moon of Buenos Aires, amid the echoes of tango music, Lucas confessed his complex feelings to Alejandra. He revealed his innermost thoughts, his attraction to her totality, which included her amputation. Alejandra listened, her eyes reflecting the city lights, and shared her fears of being desired for the wrong reasons.
Chapter 5: Understanding in Ushuaia
It was the southernmost city of Ushuaia that brought clarity. Surrounded by the stark beauty of Tierra del Fuego, they faced their truths. Lucas learned to love Alejandra for her soul, her laughter, and the way she embraced life's challenges. And Alejandra saw in Lucas a man who valued her for all she was, beyond physical appearances.
Epilogue
Lucas's articles captured not just the scenic wonders of South America, but the story of a woman who embodied the continent's spirit. In Alejandra, he found more than inspiration; he found a partner who taught him the beauty of loving without reservations.

“This Wish” Rewrite ✨
(RFTS!Au Version)
Hello!! It’s Flicker here again!
I’ve decided to give a shot at rewriting Asha’s “I Want” song and see what I could come up with.
The original song was…okay. It’s not a bad thing to listen to. I personally think the chorus and the instrumental there is really pretty. It just felt weirdly lacking? I’m sure there are many people out there who share the same criticism with me, so I’m not going to go all out on that.
Anyways, back to the thing at hand.
For context:
RFTS!Asha is a servant girl at the castle who’s a dreamer and someone with a huge imagination for what there could be. The thing is, that spark has been buried down after the tragic loss of her father’s life. Now she’s terrified of having her hopes up, in fear of facing that same agony of losing another dream.
While she never lost that daydreaming habit of hers, Asha often finds herself cowering away rather than committing. And this often causes her to go back on some of her promises. She’s frustrated that this stupid flaw of hers is holding her back from reaching out to those she loves.
This is evident when Asha has secretly been noticing that Rosas’ citizens aren’t actually as happy as they claim to be. They’re dull, missing that zest and stuck in a cycle of dissatisfaction. She knows there must be something they’re missing but…what? As the king’s assistant, she’s the only one close to him with a chance to negotiate on what could be done to address this problem.
But it’s the king! He’s snapped at her times before. What if…? But what about the people she loves?
As Asha sings this song, she fights an internal battle within while expressing her frustrations and how she wants to break free from the chains she’s made for herself.
…………….
Isn’t this the place where dreams come true?
Then why does it all feel so way out of place?
If I could show them the life they have embraced,
Open their eyes to their own lies,
Would they question it all like I did?
But when I start, my head says “Sit Down,”
So how could I when I could barely be worth something?
For too long I have withdrawn, and avoided every song,
Now time has gone and now I don’t know where I belong,
So do I look up to the stars above me? Or keep caution at every warning sign?
Should I let the dreams within me rise and soar free?
Or should I pay no heed and stay in line?
Still, I hold this wish,
That they’ll have something more for them than this,
Still, I hold this wish,
That I’ll do something more for them than….this,
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, ah-ah
More than this, (oh-ah-ah-ah)
For many years, I’ve kept my head down low,
Still did what I was told when someone told me ‘No,’
Yet, there’s a part of me who’s just yearning to glow,
A part that’s just longing to know,
It just won’t let me go!
With all these reservations and hesitations, I’m not sure where to even begin,
The risks and failures are daunting but I can’t just lose this fire from deep within,
If I could just be pointed in any given direction on where to go and what to do,
My legs are shaking but my head’s held high,
The way you always taught me to….
So I look up to the stars to guide me,
And pray that they’d send some kind of sign,
I’m sure there will be challenges that find me,
But I want to take them on one at a time,
So I make this wish,
That they’ll have something more for them than this,
So I make this wish,
That I’ll do something more for them than….this,
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah, ah-ah
More than this, (oh-ah-ah-ah)
So I make this wish…
That I’ll be something more….for us than…this…..
…….
The last line is meant to end at a sad note as Asha cowers away again, thinking that her wish to the skies has went unheard as per usual. No dramatic or hype instrumental at the end. Maybe a soft and melancholic melody instead?
Phew, my girl’s self esteem really is just: 📉📉📉
Btw, I want to make it clear that I AM NO SONGWRITER. So if the words are all clunky and weird at times, bear with me. 🥲
I don’t claim that this is “perfect” and “proof I could do better than Disney.” It’s just so I could better fit the song into my own version of the story. I might make a few changes along the way but we’ll see. :))
Thanks for Reading 💖

Angsty prompt - Gale gets a bit arrogant and carried away and gets Karlach's hopes up for a possible magical solution to her problem.
(no pressure, as always) ❤️
Sorry this has taken me so long, but I got to it. Thank you for the prompts. Yours are always so great to work on. This is just total heartbreak, by the way.
Word Count - 966 words - CW - Major Character Death
"The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long."
---
“I’m sorry, Karlach.”
It was all Gale could say during their last night together, as the campfire burnt as intensely as she had, as the logs on the fire crackled, slowly becoming ash, just as she would. The stars shone above them brightly, as if knowing that she would soon join them, burning with the intention that all would see their beauty. He’d promised her he’d save her, that she would live her long life under blue skies, that she would feel the touch of those around her, that loves embrace would hold her closely for years to come. Magic was everything to him. It could fix everything. But not her, as he’d come to find out.
She lifted her head, her voice a little quieter than the usual boisterous tones he’d got used to. “Don’t worry about it. You did all you could.”
“If only we had more time, then I could...” He refused to accept this was the end. If I could get you back to Waterdeep, if I could freeze you somehow, if we could remove your infernal engine entirely...
“Really, it’s good. You did more for me than anyone. Hells, how many people can say they’ve stood under an ice storm and lived to tell the tale?” She chuckled at the memory, her feet kicking a little dust towards the fire that spat embers at her.
He remembered the night of experimentation, of Ice Storm and Hold Person spells. He’d even conjured the Weave with her in a hope that he could feel the infernal engine within her and devise a plan to repair it. All it had led to was their combined touch-starved thoughts joining and reminding them both of what they would never have. “Karlach, I refuse to accept this is it. After all we have been through, how you saved me at Moonrise; it can’t end this way.”
“Hey, none of that talk. None of this “this is the end and we’re all going to die” bollocks.” Karlach pouted as she spoke, her imitation of Gale one that she hoped would make him smile. When he didn’t, she gave his arm a soft punch. “What I mean is, we’ve had a good run, ain’t we?”
Her smile always gave him hope. She faced her end with such optimism, something he had tried and failed to do. He for a time, had wallowed in the thoughts of his demise. She, however, had embraced the knowledge that each day could be her last, finding pleasure in such small things as flowers and cheap ale, and it was her zest for life that had caused him to fall for her. He wanted to tell her he loved her, to worship her as she deserved, but now he had failed her. It was his fault that she was about to die, and who could love him knowing that?
He glanced over at her after she nudged him. “It has certainly been an adventure.”
“Exactly, so let’s do what we always do tonight; get blind drunk and do that Weave thing you do so well.”
The night was one to remember. The wine flowed as freely as the Chionthar nearby, laughter filled the silence, and neither spoke of what was to happen the next day. Only the celestial bodies above knew the fates of the doomed pair.
---
Karlach watched as Tav made the decision, as Gale gave the solemn nod of agreement before casting the teleportation spell. She shouted as he vanished from her view with the knowledge of what he was about to do, her heart aching, not with the incredible heat of her infernal engine but a buried grief she hadn’t felt was possible. As she appeared on the docks, the cool salted breeze on her body, she immediately spun on her heels to go back.
She barely heard the yells of Tav and her companions as she ran through the city streets, her tears singeing to steam as they hit her cheeks. Her axe swiped at the mindflayers that attacked, their long shadows emerging from the darkened alleys onto her path. They slowed her down and with each swing she became more desperate, her war cries now tinged with the knowledge of loss.
It was as she reached the courtyard of the High Hall that the ground shook beneath her, as a blinding light filled the sky for all to see. A new star born in the light of day. She felt the pounding agony within her body, the tadpole, her engine, his death, all combining and bringing her to her knees on the cold cobbles. Her tears could not be felt as her body burnt brighter, as the stone turned black under the heat of her blaze, as the city grew quiet aside from the crackling of soft flame.
As her heart shattered to pieces, she thought back over their adventures: the sun shining upon her face, the improvised sauna under a waterfall, the tender kiss of his lips in the palm of Mystra’s hand. Karlach had only one regret as she clutched her chest, as she knew she would now die alone; She wished she had told him how she felt, that she loved him.
As she whispered the unspoken words she had longed to say, she felt the cool breeze touch her face. She closed her eyes, saw him before her and, with it, she accepted what she had always known, that she would die before she had even lived.
The courtyard was left silent, the blazing sun setting over the world as peace fell. All that was left were blackened ashes taken to the skies with the passing of a gentle wind; skies that would soon hold two newborn stars burning brighter than they ever had in life.

The sun had just set, casting a golden glow over the cozy living room where the book club gathered every Thursday night. Geraldine, the host, was pouring tea while the others, Mildred, Edith, and Beatrice, settled into their favorite armchairs. The women, all in their late sixties, had been friends for decades, sharing stories and experiences over countless books.
Tonight, they were starting a new book that Geraldine had stumbled upon in a quaint little bookstore downtown. The cover was intriguing: a mysterious forest bathed in moonlight with a title that read "The Shifting Sands of Time." Geraldine had felt a strange pull towards it, an inexplicable urge to share it with her friends.
As they opened the book and began to read the first chapter aloud, an odd sensation filled the room. The words seemed to shimmer on the page, almost as if they were alive. Unbeknownst to the women, the air around them began to hum with energy.
Geraldine felt it first—a warm, tingling sensation spreading through her body. She paused mid-sentence, her hand trembling slightly. "Does anyone else feel that?" she asked, her voice shaky.
Mildred, who had been listening intently, nodded. "It's like a... warmth," she said, placing a hand on her chest. The other two women exchanged nervous glances, feeling the same inexplicable heat.
As Geraldine continued to read, the tingling intensified. The women's bodies began to change, subtly at first. Their skin, once wrinkled and pale, started to smooth and tighten. Muscles they hadn't seen in decades began to ripple under their skin. Edith gasped as she felt her back straighten, the chronic pain she had endured for years fading away.
The transformation accelerated. Geraldine's once gray hair darkened to a rich black, growing thicker and more lustrous. Her face lost its lines and sagging skin, replaced by a strong, chiseled jawline. She looked down at her hands, now large and strong, and let out a cry of surprise.
Mildred's figure transformed next. Her once frail frame became broad and muscular. Her hair, too, darkened and grew. Her breasts flattened into a broad, hairy chest, and she felt a surge of energy and vitality course through her. She stood up, her height increasing, and looked at her friends with wide eyes.
Edith and Beatrice were experiencing similar changes. Edith's body grew taller and more muscular, her feminine curves replaced by the hard lines of a powerful man. Beatrice's transformation was the most dramatic. Her entire body bulked up, and she felt a thick beard sprout from her face. Her voice deepened, becoming a rich baritone.
The living room seemed to warp and shift around them. The familiar, cozy space transformed into a sleek, modern apartment. The armchairs were replaced by a large, plush sectional sofa. The tea set disappeared, replaced by a table laden with protein shakes and workout gear.
The book in Geraldine's hands—now Gerald—vanished, and with it, their memories of ever being the elderly women of the book club. Instead, they were four close friends: Gerald, Mike, Eddie, and Brian. The transformation was complete. They were now hairy, muscular men in their prime, living a life of camaraderie, fitness, and nightlife.
Gerald looked around at his friends, a smile spreading across his bearded face. "You guys ready to hit the gym?" he asked, his voice full of energy and excitement.
Mike, once Mildred, laughed and flexed his biceps. "Hell yeah! Let's go!" Eddie and Brian nodded, their eyes sparkling with the same youthful vigor.
As they left the apartment, the setting sun cast long shadows on the beach outside. The four friends walked towards the setting sun, ready to embrace their new lives, never remembering the book club they once were, but instead living each day with a newfound zest for life and friendship.

Zoe: "Hey, Vinnie, um, you've got a little something on your shirt."
Vinnie: "Huh? Oh, it's just a splash of marinara sauce, no biggie."
Zoe: "Um, yeah, but it's kinda all over your face too."
Vinnie: "Oh, that's just how I like to enjoy my spaghetti, you know, fully immersive experience!"
Zoe: "Right, but, uh, it's also in your hair..."
Vinnie: "Ah, that's just a little extra flavoring! Adds some zest to my look, don't you think?"
Zoe: "Well, um, if you say so... But, uh, maybe you should, you know, clean up a bit?"
Vinnie: "Nah, I'm good. Sauce is like my trademark, you know, adds character!"
Zoe: "Um, Vinnie, hold still for a sec."
Vinnie: "huh? Why?"
Zoe: *reaches over with a napkin* "I think you've got a little something on your everything, let me just..."
Vinnie: *backs away* "Hey, hey, hands off!”
Zoe: "But Vinnie, it's just sauce, it'll stain if you leave it too long."
Vinnie: "Nah, it's all part of the charm, Zoe. Adds a rugged, rustic vibe."
Zoe: *tries to wipe his face discreetly* "I get that, but it's dripping down your chin now."
Vinnie: *resists* "Come on, Zoe, I'm embracing the Italian lifestyle here."
Zoe: "Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you when you start attracting flies."
Vinnie: *grins* "Hey, free protein, right? Thanks for looking out though, Zoe!”
Zoe: 🤢
Bro- bro, the first time I read this I must have done this quickly or something because now that I look at it there's so many things here that absolutely sent me:
Zoe: "Um, yeah, but it's kinda all over your face too."
Vinnie: "Oh, that's just how I like to enjoy my spaghetti, you know, fully immersive experience!"
This is just so xddd Vinnie calling being covered in sauce "fully immersive experience" is something else, what a man.
Vinnie: *resists* "Come on, Zoe, I'm embracing the Italian lifestyle here."
Ah yes, truly the Italian ways - walking around being covered in marinara sauce.
Zoe: "Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you when you start attracting flies."
Vinnie: *grins* "Hey, free protein, right? Thanks for looking out though, Zoe!”
Do I even need to add anything? He's just sooo soo smelly man coded. Treating fucking attracting flies like a good thing cause he can eat them and they are a source of protein, what an absolutely disgusting creature, I love him. Listen, if a man told me this in real life I think I would just fall in love then and there. And I'm already in love with him, so what else can I say?
Zoe later returns to Russell who knew why she went so he just casually asks how it went and Zoe simply falls down to her knees and with trembling voice says that she failed and that Vinnie is happy about attracting flies. Russell is... disappointed, yet not surprised, but still, what the actual hell is up with Vinnie

hi jen! first off, i love your blog and it definitely helped me realize i’m a femme by helping me realize just how much i love butches. now i’ve been in a relationship with a butch for close to two months and it might be crazy but i can really see myself marrying my butch one day. i never knew i could feel so loved and cared for before i met them. what i wanted to ask you is, what can i do to be a good lover to my butch? is there anything you as a butch would recommend all lovers of butches to do for their honey? i hope you’re having a great day
I pushed away my natural attraction to femmes for fear of being "like a man" or "predatory". Basically I was letting rhetoric from straight and LGBT Communities form my ideas about what butch/femme meant. The myth that butches (or femmes) don't exist outside of their relationship to each other and that is was mimicing Man/Woman roles and societal rules was pushed at me from many angles.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling at our most butch/femme when with each other and gaining stength from our chemistry with each other, both as friends and in romantic situations. There is also no reason to act in ways we are not comfortable JUST to push back against roles that are perceived as "heteronormative". Denying what makes us happy is akin to parents being upset when their son like trucks and rough housing because that makes him "stereotypical". No. It makes him human and people should be able to enjoy what they love without being judges for being stereotypical OR going against the grain.
My last girlfriend (and deepest love of my life) didn't use femme and I didn't care because her connection with me was undeniable and deep. She made me feel loved and wanted and unique.
My first girlfriend was a dyed in the wool strong femme. She tried her best to get me to embrace my butchness and the understand that I was allowed to be protective and do nice things for her while also letting my guard down and being vulnerable in intimate situations. I was not ready.
Here are some of the things that made me feel safe and seen as exactly who I was, a short butch with an outgoing personality and a zest for life and people who deperately wanted to let my passion for women free from supression.
Helping me pick outfits. I am pretty utilitarian in my clothing style. When we had a nice dinner out or a party my last girlfriend would help me pick clothes that looked good on me. Encouraging me to wear a tie or crisp button down. She let me wear my suspenders or a fitted vest and helped me button it up and straighten the seams. It is a miracle we ever made it to dinner when she did that.
Establishing I am hers in public settings, even if no one else noticed. When she would slide her hand on to the small of my back under my coat or flannel and rest it there I would go weak in the knees. Feeling her gentle touch, letting me know she is there with only me was like being drunk on feeling good.
Don't assume sexual roles or bedroom activities are a certain way for your butch. Touch is important to me but vulnerability was hard. Build trust and have some fun but in the privacy of our beds all butch/ femme stereo types should be left out in the cold and what ever brings out mutual passion should be the goal.
Pocket knives, belt buckles, and ugly Christmas sweaters are my favorite gifts. Things she made and frogs or toads she has thrifted are wonderful reminders that she knows me and loves me. She still sends tiny gifts to me because our friendship is strong and for that I am grateful. Figure out what tiny things make her smile or laugh and even bring her out of her comfort zone in a fun way. I wear too tight ugly sweatshirts that she gave me all the time and give no shits as to what other think because they remind me of her.
I am so glad you found love and passion with your butch and are doing your best to honor her as she is. Being a butch woman is never easy out in the world but being butch in a warm and caring home with a loving femme is peak lesbian life.

For the uncommon questions asks:
For Pally Cyrus 6) Does he consider laws flexible, or immovable?
Ranger Cyrus 2) How easy it for your character to laugh?
Yiseeril 11) How does she cope with confusion?
Durge Cyrus 14) What animal do they fear most?
For you! H) What trait do you admire the most (for any of them, all of them, or just in general)?
thank you smmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm <3333333333 ily (uncommon character asks here!)
Pally!Cyrus
6) Does he consider laws flexible, or immovable?
Cyrus will always be someone who prioritizes people over laws & institutions. He's not personally an active rule breaker, but he defends those who are-- protecting the other orphans from the headmaster or from the Flaming Fist, for example. Of course, when it comes to his own personal code of ethics & his oath of devotion, he is much less flexible. Do good, all the time, and if you make a mistake, your soul is going to be a little bit empty forever. Lol.
It's why breaking his oath is so devastating at first-- and why Karlach persuades him to keep it broken. To punish himself less for the impossible standards he's set for himself.
Ranger!Cyrus
2) How easy it for your character to laugh?
It's VERY hard lol I have a post somewhere in my drafts about Karlach & Astarion getting together in this playthrough after bonding over a bet to get him to lighten up for one miserable fucking second. Especially early game, Cyrus is all business. No time for mucking around or having fun, there are people to save and tadpoles to extract and a mind that will not stop looking for threats around every corner. On guard, always, like he has been for the last fifty years.
Wyll has the easiest time of anyone. He's just so silly!! And it doesn't compromise his sense of duty & purpose. It makes those burdens easier to bear, where Cyrus is so used to just bearing it without even the lightest of reprieves. It really catches him off-guard the first couple of times, but it's nice to laugh again
(How long had it been anyway? Did it occur to Cyrus, sometime before he killed her, before the life transference spell, in the decades of their normal life together, that he wasn't laughing as much as he used to? Or was it only after everything that he realized it was another thing she had taken from him?)
Durge!Cyrus
14) What animal do they fear most?
Durge!Cyrus is scared of very little external to his own ruined psyche. Like every other iteration of the character, he has a mild fear of dogs, stemming from a pre-Urge incident in which one was sicced on him after he stood up to its owner for harassing someone.
But for most fear... does the slayer form count? I mean I know it's a monstrosity technically, but... even pre-amnesia Best Boy of Bhaal Cyrus was terrified of being bequeathed this particular 'gift' from his father. It really is all of Cyrus' worst fears--being a mindless weapon & having his body transformed by magic--in one gory package.
Yiseeril
11) How does she cope with confusion?
99.9% of the time, Yiseeril embraces confusion readily as an opportunity to learn more. The unknown is tantalizing, bursting with its promise of discovery when the right mind (hers) is applied to it.
The edge case is anything to do with her own desires, esp re: her faith, which she obstinately refuses to interrogate beyond what is most advantageous for her to want in the moment.
H) What trait do you admire the most?
Cyrus: His heart. There's a real element of wish fulfillment to his character for me as a person trying to do/be good in an unjust world. He can do it!! It's hard and it takes a lot out of him but he can do it!!! And I can keep trying to do it too.
Yiseeril: Her zest for life. Which is ironic/tragic because I have a number of songs on her playlist about death/being dead/dying as a metaphor for her illithid ascension, but before that, her love for the most trivial of mundanities is, I think, wonderful. It reminds me a bit of the program house I was in in undergrad, which really loved to grab furniture off the side of the road & collect random books & hoard strange odds & ends. I want to live life like that, invested in the material & aesthetic pleasure of small things.
#cyrus bg3#durge!cyrus#gods least favorite princess#also tumblr insists stubbornly on fucking up the link formatting is2g it should NOT look like that but i cant be bothered to fix it

I am that girl.
The girl who decided to embrace who she is and go on her own writing journey.
The one who dreams of romance in all its forms. I write clean romance. I can see romance in every circumstance and write love stories that will speed your heart rate, making a seeping wound seem swoon worthy, because, you know, the love interest got it from a swamp in Africa where he went because he's a marine who is constantly pushing his own needs aside out of duty - so he's that noble, stable, Captain America type. *Que those anime eyes, of compassionate adoration 🥺.
I'm the one who makes up stories to replace failed book endings. (Yeah, you know them. They're the stories that sweep you off on an daring adventure, where peril is everywhere and the girl experiences it all with the guy she knows is meant for only her and finally you get to the end and... they share a short, underdeveloped peck on the cheek... 😳🙄. Seriously!?! This is what the adventure ends with? He just took out an entire company of enemies (got a flesh wound in the process), ALL to prove his love for you, and he gets a... hug?? Oh, we are WAAAAAY passed the hug. He almost died in your arms!!!! Kiss him back to life-Give him something to live for!!!)
I make endings morph into happily ever afters, because - why not? I have enough real life - I live it!! I'm the girl who decides to make every book fit my idea of perfection!
I'm also the girl who contemplates and admires (Mmmm... YES, ADMIRES!) masculinity. (Seriously, I write romance... CLEAN romance... )🤷♀️
I'm the one who muses over characters, waking up months after finishing a book, wondering what might have transpired in the lives of my beloved character kin if only the book had never ended.
I rehearse love stories:
The ones with a strong, yet passive guy who finally finds his strength and drive in the girl he thought would never give him the time of day;
Or the ones with the brooding hero who's been rejected and hidden away his compassion and strength in an attempt to protect himself, only to risk it all when he exposes his true self to redeem the one he tried to push away;
And, OH THE ALPHA, whose tyrant side nearly destroys the one he loves (but feels he has to conquer), before he learns (just as his world is crashing down) to reign it all in to be what she needs.
There's also the sub stories:
The sweet guy and the mean girl - closely related to the bad guy and good girl,
The "I've loved you since high-school/boy next door" stories (sigh...),
And, finally, the "I hate you - you hate me, but we are SOOO attracted!" stories.
I am that romance author who crafts her version of the perfect romance story, clicks save, slams her laptop closed and walks away thinking, "What would people THINK if I ever got the courage to publish THAT?"
I'm the romance author who hides in fear of being misunderstood. (Yes, that IS a real thing!) You see, romance authors essentially craft the chic flicks of the written world. We're easily misunderstood. Whether we choose to craft the clean and sweet, or the spice and zest, we take a risk, and we are always trying to find THAT balance.
So, we are forever having conversations with ourselves. "How far is too far?" "Is this too cliché?" "It's perfect for flirty banter, but will it be cringy to read?" "Nah... that reads like a bad pick-up line..." "I can't write that! The "clean and sweet" group would hyperventilate! - Wait! Isn't that the point?" "How do I entirely avoid the subject of intimacy for the couple who was married for 5 years, has been separated, and now feels that spark again... (we all KNOW what WOULD happen... they're technically still married!)" "Do I fade to black or pretend that this wouldn't progress?" "Oh, come on!!! We all KNOW they'd flirt like that!"
This is especially true if you are an inspirational writer. It seems everyone has a moral limit and one slight mistep and you're crossed off the list, never to be revisited.
I've explored the common mindset of many: "Romance books create unrealistic desires that a guy can never live up to!" (That's a big FALSE btw.) Could this happen? It's possible, but in my experience, musing on what makes my lover who he is creates a reverence and appreciation for the fact that his entire being works differently than me. That mystique intrigues me and strengthens my attraction to him.
Romance novels have the potential to make us look deeply into our relationships to understand one another, see our own flaws and think lovely thoughts about our significant other.
So, yeah. I'm that girl. The one who is learning to embrace myself as an author, as a person, and as me.
The one inviting you on my journey: to read my work, and step into my inner most thoughts.
The one ready to embrace how and what I write, and bring a different view to Romance. ❤🌹📚

The Overlooked Key to Long-Term Mobility: Why Dog Knee Braces Are Essential for Aging and Injured Dogs
When Bella, a nine-year-old Golden Retriever, started limping after her morning walks, her owner David thought it was just a sign of aging. But when the limp persisted and her energy dwindled, he knew it was more serious. Bella was eventually diagnosed with arthritis and an old ACL injury. The vet suggested a solution David hadn’t considered—a dog knee brace. Though it seemed simple, this brace became the key to Bella’s renewed mobility and zest for life, helping her move comfortably for years to come.
Why Dog Knee Braces are Vital for Long-Term Mobility
Dog knee braces are gaining popularity among veterinarians and pet owners for a reason. Beyond being a temporary aid, they can dramatically improve a dog’s mobility and comfort long term. Studies show that over 20% of dogs over one year old suffer from joint issues, often affecting the knees. Issues like arthritis, ligament injuries, and general joint instability are all too common, especially in larger breeds and older dogs .
A knee brace doesn’t just help dogs with immediate injuries; it can be a critical tool for managing long-term joint health. Here’s a closer look at the powerful, often overlooked benefits of dog knee braces for mobility, pain relief, and overall quality of life.
How Dog Knee Braces Provide Support and Stability
Joint Stabilization: A dog knee brace provides stability by supporting the knee joint, reducing pressure on the ligaments and surrounding muscles. This stabilization is particularly helpful for dogs who suffer from partial ACL tears or general weakness in the knee.
Pain Reduction: The support provided by a knee brace reduces strain, allowing for decreased pain levels during activity. This allows dogs like Bella to enjoy their daily walks without discomfort, enabling them to stay active and healthy longer.
Injury Prevention: One of the most significant advantages of knee braces for dogs is their preventative power. By providing additional support, braces can prevent further injury in dogs that may already have weakened joints. This is especially useful for senior dogs and breeds that are prone to joint issues, like Labradors and German Shepherds.
The Hidden Benefits of Knee Braces for Dogs
Delayed Arthritis Progression: Wearing a dog knee brace can slow the progression of arthritis, allowing dogs to remain mobile and comfortable for years. Research suggests that supportive devices help reduce the need for medication and can delay invasive procedures by managing symptoms early .
Mental Well-being: Dogs that experience chronic pain or are limited in their mobility can become anxious or depressed. With a knee brace that allows for more comfortable movement, dogs can regain confidence and mental vitality. This boost in mental well-being is invaluable, especially for aging dogs who may already be experiencing a decline in activity.
Cost-Effective Solution: While knee braces do require an initial investment, they are often a more affordable alternative to repeated surgeries or ongoing medication. In many cases, braces extend the time before surgical intervention is needed, providing a proactive approach to joint health.
Choosing the Right Knee Brace for Your Dog
Finding the right knee brace for your dog is essential to achieving the desired results. Custom-fit braces can be tailored to your dog's exact needs, considering factors like size, breed, and the type of injury or condition. Look for high-quality braces that provide firm support without restricting movement.
Bella’s Return to Mobility
For Bella, her knee brace became more than just a piece of support gear—it was a lifeline. With her new brace, she was able to trot around her favorite park without wincing or slowing down. David noticed a renewed spark in her eyes and was thrilled to see her enjoying life again.
Conclusion: Embrace Long-Term Mobility with Dog Knee Braces
Dog knee braces are often an overlooked but powerful tool for maintaining your dog’s mobility and quality of life. By offering stability, reducing pain, and supporting long-term joint health, a simple knee brace can make all the difference in keeping your dog active and happy. Whether your dog is aging gracefully or bouncing back from an injury, a dog knee brace could be the overlooked key to their comfort and well-being.

Contemporary Fiction Contemporary fiction often grapples with issues and settings relevant to today's readers, offering both escapism and reflection on current societal dynamics. This genre includes a variety of sub-genres such as romance, mystery, and slice-of-life stories, often providing characters and situations readers can easily relate to. Contemporary fiction's approach to character development is usually deep and multi-layered, enabling readers to experience the character's journey on a personal level. Examples include works like "The Rosie Project" by Graeme Simsion, which mixes humor with emotional depth, and "Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine" by Gail Honeyman, which deals with serious issues through a lens of personal growth and eventual healing. Culinary Romance Culinary romance marries the delights of love with the passion for food, creating a sensory-rich experience for readers. This sub-genre of romance not only entertains but also educates about different cuisines and culinary techniques. Julia Child’s "My Life in France" while predominantly memoir, reads like a romance with its heartfelt depictions of her love for French cuisine and her husband. In fiction, Laura Florand’s "The Chocolate Thief" beautifully blends romance with the world of fine chocolate making in Paris. Such books offer an exploration of how food can be a metaphor for love, tradition, and creativity, adding depth and texture to the romantic plotline. French Setting The French setting in literature often evokes a sense of romance, history, and an unparalleled joie de vivre. France's diverse landscapes—ranging from the lavender fields of Provence to the urban elegance of Paris—provide a rich tapestry for narratives of all kinds. The sensory richness of the French countryside, bustling city markets, and historical café culture add an immersive quality to the stories. For example, Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence" provides a humorous yet insightful look at rural French life, while "The Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah uses the rugged landscape and war-time backdrop of France to offer a poignant tale of resilience and love. The French setting, with its inherent charm and cultural depth, serves to enhance and ground the narratives it frames. Escapist Read Escapist reads are cherished for their ability to transport readers to different worlds, offering a temporary respite from everyday life. These books typically feature engrossing plots, well-crafted characters, and vivid settings that engage the imagination. Genres like fantasy, romance, and adventure are commonly associated with escapist literature. For instance, J.K. Rowling’s "Harry Potter" series takes readers to the magical world of Hogwarts, while Nicholas Sparks’ romance novels often offer idyllic settings and heart-warming love stories. An escapist novel need not be purely fantastical; it can also provide relief through relatable characters facing extraordinary circumstances, as seen in "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Summer Novel Summer novels, often dubbed "beach reads," are typically light, entertaining, and easy to consume. They offer a perfect blend of engaging plotlines and breezy readability, making them ideal companions for vacations. These novels frequently explore themes of love, adventure, and personal growth, set against seasonally appropriate backdrops. Elin Hilderbrand's novels, often set in Nantucket, epitomize this genre, balancing drama and romance with a casual, sun-soaked atmosphere. Similarly, Jenny Colgan’s "The Bookshop on the Corner" combines the charm of a quaint village with the warmth of summer, delivering a feel-good narrative that perfectly suits the leisurely pace of summer reading. Contemporary Fiction Pros: Contemporary fiction allows readers to connect with the characters and settings because they reflect modern-day life. The themes, language, and scenarios are often more relatable and engaging, enhancing reader involvement. This realistic approach offers an authentic escape, allowing readers to see their everyday issues mirrored and potentially resolved within the narrative. The dynamic plots and character development often keep the audience captivated. Cons: The downside of contemporary fiction is that it can sometimes lack the timeless appeal of other genres. The emphasis on current issues and trends may make the book less relevant in the future. Additionally, the realism may limit the escapism some readers seek, making it less appealing for those who prefer more fantastical or historical elements in their reading material. Culinary Romance Pros: Culinary romance combines the pleasures of love and food, appealing to readers who enjoy both. It provides sensory experiences through detailed descriptions of cooking and meals, making the story more immersive. The blending of romance with culinary elements can create a unique and compelling narrative, engaging readers with its blend of passion and craftsmanship. Cons: On the other hand, culinary romance might narrow its audience, as not all readers are interested in detailed food descriptions or cooking processes. For those disinterested in the culinary arts, these details may slow down the narrative and detract from the romantic storyline. This genre may also struggle to maintain balance, sometimes focusing too heavily on culinary aspects at the expense of developing the romantic plot. French Setting Pros: A French setting offers a rich cultural backdrop, enhancing the novel's ambiance with an air of elegance and sophistication. It adds an element of allure and enchantment, creating a romantic and picturesque atmosphere that many readers find appealing. The distinct cultural and historical elements of France can deepen the narrative and provide an educational experience, broadening the reader's horizons. Cons: The exoticism of a French setting might distance some readers who are unfamiliar with the culture, potentially making the story less relatable. Localization can also lead to the inclusion of niche cultural references or language that may alienate non-French-speaking readers. Additionally, clichés about France can sometimes surface, leading to stereotypical representations that might undermine the depth of the narrative. Escapist Read Pros: Escapist reads offer a mental getaway from the grind of daily life, providing relaxation and entertainment. They often feature lighthearted plots and satisfying resolutions, allowing readers to temporarily forget their worries. This ingredient can make the book highly appealing during stressful times, as it offers a retreat into a world of simplicity and joy. Cons: The major drawback of escapist literature is that it can sometimes lack depth and complexity, which may disappoint readers seeking substance and intellectual stimulation. Escapist novels might prioritize entertainment over realistic issues, evading serious themes that some audiences might prefer. This propensity to focus on fantasy over reality can also render the storyline predictable and less impactful over time.
Summer Novel Pros: Summer novels are often designed to be breezy and engaging, making them perfect for casual, feel-good reading during vacations. They typically feature enjoyable plots and likable characters, making them easy to pick up and hard to put down. The seasonal setting can add to the book's charm, with vivid descriptions of sunny days and beachside retreats enhancing the overall reading experience. Cons: Conversely, summer novels might be perceived as too lightweight or superficial, lacking the depth and staying power of more serious works. Their tendency to cater to a seasonal demand means they might not offer much value beyond temporary enjoyment. This genre can also be seen as formulaic, relying on common tropes associated with summer adventures, which may fail to satisfy readers looking for originality and depth.
