OKAY. so i dont really do these kinda posts but id like to say a few things about season 4 cus ive seen some things and the fandom making theories, i just like to write about my own thoughts. ive watched s4 only one time due to not having netflix so i dont really remember many scenes.

"season 5 when?" are you good?? the season 4 just dropped 3 days ago! Im serious when i say ive seen multiple people already posting this question mostly on YT comments or Insta. also the fact that they're not artists OR a fic author makes sense honestly. they have no idea how animation works.

"rayla's acting weird" this is what frustrats me the most. NO she's not... ok maybe a little. but like. come the fuck on, she was gone for 2 years. ofc she's not the same person we saw in season 3. people change. plus, personally, i dont see any difference on her except this one time when callum asked her to...kill him. yes rayla acted a lot calm in that scene- not just that scene really. she was so calm most of the time, but i can see why? she's trying to get callum warm up to her, she's giving him space, she's being gentle as much as she can cus she knows how much she hurt him. she's grown up, she's not the same hot-headed, irritated elf anymore. and we all know how she hides her feelings. Im pretty sure she's gotten used to it, or managed to cope her feelings well so that she can stay calm. lastly about rayla, all i have to say is people change, so does rayla. and no she's not fake at all.

firstly, if rayla's acting weird, what about Viren being supportive with Terry? isnt that weirder? he didnt even treat his own son better, but he's supporting a trans fella? sus.... secondly, what about opeli being so chill about Ez going with Zubia. in that case most of the characters in s4 were out of character. and that's okay cus it's been 2 fucking years!

personally i think the "Zubia in Katolis" scene was a bit rushed. they couldve done it better but Im not saying it was bad at all tho! i loved the scene with the whole callum doing magic thing and the dragon sized jelly tart? xD

"why is rayla back?" why not really. she realized it was useless to find viren and came back home? she realized she wanted to see her mage? "we had something so special. but I became so obsessed with revenge, i.. risked losing the best thing ive ever had... you" she CLEARLY missed him yall. ofc she came back.

"where's the rayllum kiss" Im glad we didnt get a rayllum kiss. I know this is a cartoon show but at least the animators made it similar to how an in-real-life relationship works. people dont just go "you were gone for two years but its okay, i forgive you, lets kiss". Callum needs time to get used to being around rayla again. he's happy but also angry, he needs to see how hard rayla's trying to win callum's trust back. it was so clear that callum got a bit comfortable with rayla again in the last few episodes, especially the last one. That hug was enough sign for us to know they're gonna be okay and that they're still deeply in love.

Lastly, Season 4 was amazing!! i loved season 4, and all the new things we saw. the arc is building up, it's so interesting, im so excited for season 5.

so thomas and logan are elves, roman remus and virgil are magic users (witches warlocks wizards whatever the word is lmao), remus specializes in wind magic, roman in fire, and virgil in weather. 

the magic virgil uses is often called chaos magic and in order for something to be generally classified as chaos magic, it needs to be unusual/rare, chaotic (duh) or unpredictable, and destructive. (these classifications might change as i think on them more). wind magic is largely argued upon whether it is chaos magic or not, seeing as how it is largely unpredictable and can be seen as destructive, but it doesnt fit the bill with the first one, leading to the arguments. same with fire magic, but they said it was too common for it to be chaos magic. virgil having weather magic means that he can create storms, sandstorms, generate lightning, windstorms, and also able to control (or rather ‘bend’) rain. of course, there are drawbacks and limitations, adding to the fact that virgil has a very hard time controlling his magic and harnessing it, he is not op dw. magic is also very much tied to emotions btw

elven lore and shit time - while gold is rare in many places in the fantasy land (i still have yet to decide on a name), in the elven land (i have not decided names for each section either lmao) iron and steel are actually harder to find than gold. gold still holds its own worth, but iron and steel are generally regarded as superior in worth than gold, which is why many nobles possess the material. and ive already explained the left eye crest thing with the elves, their left eye has a shape or crest to it along with a color that glows slightly. the glow can be dimmer or brighter depending on their emotions at the time. logan has a diamond shape to his left eye and a leaf green glow to it, which also happens to be his eye color as well. thomas’ is a heart and rainbow color and glow, while his actual eye color is an almond brown. ill discuss appearances in another post btw. anyways, the elven lifestyle is the most similar to humans, having a battleschool, its system nd shit, etc. although it does differ in terms of ‘rulers’. the humans have a monarchy while the elves rule through a council of 9. (an odd number so there arent any ties) logan uses both a sword and a bow as his weapons of choice. thomas was forced to go to battleschool so he basically just dips as soon as he can after teaching logan what he knows and becomes a healer because HEALER THOMAS 

PATTON AND JANUS TIME PATTON AND JANUS TIME PATTON AND JA

 patton is one of the merfolk, who (in this au) are a species that have two forms. their mer form, where the lower half of them is the mer tail fish tail what the fuck is it called. anyways the color of pattons tail (wtf is it dude) is a desaturated light blue. he has these like ??? spikes?? is that the word? jutting out from his forearms. (at the very least pointy things) and he will not hesitate to use them as weapons. yeah he’s a feral boy. he has some spots of scales on his upper body but they are pretty scarce. in his human form, he just looks like a human i dunno what you expected lmao. in the water his eyes are a really potent blue while on land they are much duller. he can also breathe underwater regardless of the form. patton also cant really will himself to either form, if he wants to be human form he has to be on land and vice versa for the mer form.

janus is a fucking uh,, dude idk the word for it. i guess the general word for it would be dragon but he’s more humanoid than dragon. a cross between the two ig. anyways he has scales on one side of his face, scaly wings because fuck yeah, horns jutting out from his forehead, and more shit that i have forgotten but i know he has it. the scales are a golden color, with warm yellows and light oranges mixed in. left eye has a dragon pupil type thing, like a slitted pupil. fuck i hate describing things ghdgakhgask. im playing around with the idea that dragons can shapeshift but nothing is set in stone with that tbh. most dragon folk are like janus, a mix between dragon and human, and only the really powerful ones are the ones that can actually turn into dragons so thats pretty rare. but fuck descriptions its time for fucking FRIENDSHIP and FAMILY

janus has a little brother whose name is emile and they are 6 and actually pretty shy. it took them a while to warm up to patton but now he literally loves pat and everytime he sees them he bolts over and just gives him a huge hug. patton tries to act all tough but he is so soft for emile there is no denying it and they all know it. jan and emile have an agender parent and a genderfluid parent. agender parent uses xe/xem btw. 

patton has a mother and never knew his father. he and his mother have a rather,,, distant relationship i suppose. his mother is in the royal guard so she is called away often (though it does not excuse the neglect in the slightest) her and pat just mutually acknowledge that they both exist and go about their day. one day pat confessed to jan that he never really felt that they were his mom, more just a person who birthed him. one time in a particular bout of drowsiness, patton confessed that janus and his family were the ones that he truly considered family. janus got choked up and was like ‘shut up you bastard im supposed to be tough /pos’ 

the first time janus showed him how he could get rid of the dragon aspects of himself for a limited time, patton literally took one look at his human form and shouted ‘what the FUCK’ and janus was like ‘IVE SEEN YOU CHANGE FORM BEFORE WHATS YOUR DEAL’ and patton just screams ‘THIS IS FUCKIN WEIRD’ (all /lh) janus and patton get up to so many shenanigans its a wonder they havent gotten caught yet lmao

patton, once again in sleep deprivation cause thats the only fuckin time he’ll confess anything about his emotions, told janus that he was his first friend and that he was so scared to mess it up when they first became friends. he’d spent most of his life alone and always in this state of just,,, perpetual anger, bubbling right underneath the surface with no way to escape. it led to him getting in a lot of fights and just lashing out, especially at people who tried to become his friend, scaring them away. when janus came along and stayed, he said it was the best thing that ever happened to him. he finally had a friend. even when he lashed out and retreated back into himself, putting up those walls again, janus still stayed. he helped break those walls down bit by bit, helped patton with his anger issues, helped patton realize that janus was here to stay, and that he wasnt leaving.

so i see theres some theory talk floating around

but this post isnt really to do with theories so much as characterization

i had a whole thread over on twitter but ill just copy and paste some thoughts here in regards to one particular post ive seen floating around and some posts linked within im not trying to start fights or anything, im just expressing some thoughts of my own which is why im not linking to the post in question anyways

just a reminder, keith isnt a good liar so unless he became a good liar in the time that shiro was gone, i sincerely dont think he was lying to shiro when he told him that the team needed him

but whether or not he became a good liar or not, one thing is certain based on what weve been shown:

keith is a capable leader, but he still hasnt quite grown into the role yet

keith still hasnt quite learned how to pick his battles

thats why i dont think its quite right to say that hes more capable of a leader than shiro with time, he could be thats something even shiro himself saw in keith: potential 

however something thats been made clear to us is that keith still needs to learn a little

shiro on the other hand, has experience being in a leader role hes the garrisons golden boy, the pilot of the kerberos mission and he was the head of voltron for a reason black chose him for a reason

he is capable he is a role model for keith keith tells shiro that the team needs him that he cant do it and isnt as good of a leader as shiro because its what he believes to be true

keith is honest and straightforward he knows hes lacking and he doesnt try to pretend that hes a perfect leader he KNOWS hes still struggling between doing what he WANTS to do and doing what he SHOULD do - with accepting that the things he wants to do arent necessarily good for the team to be doing

hes grown immensely in the time he has been leader, but hes not the leader they need to defeat lotor not the way he is right now and he KNOWS that

as for shiro... i can agree that maybe leading voltron gave him control something that hed been robbed of in his captivity but i also dont think that hes the type to really let things like betrayal or jealousy or whatever cloud his vision shiro from the start has always seemed to put their purpose before himself hes never given the impression of being a selfish enough person to have issues over who the leader is he seems more likely to be the type to think 'if this is what it takes, well do it this way'

i think hes being genuine when he says hes glad the team didnt lose sight of things in his absence because thats just how he is hes glad that his absence didnt become their undoing because hes only one person winning the war means saving a lot more than that hes proud of them for that because thats shiro thats what hes like selfless but driven

not once has he ever complained about being thrust into this war even though hes got more than enough reasons to complain because he sees this mission and he knows its for the greater good he knows first hand how bad it can be he wants to spare people from that its like hes selfless to a fault so i dont think he actually has any issues with feeling left out or feeling as though hes the odd one out from the team if that were really the case, i dont think hed guide from the castle as easily as he is theres no reservations or hesitation he doesnt seem to think 'im not part of this anymore' so much as 'im part of this, but in a different way from usual'

keith is so willing to step aside for shiro because ultimately he still believes wholeheartedly that shiro is most suited to lead

keith has never cared about claiming or holding onto the leader position

now in the interest of explaining why i dont think the reasons the OP of the post mentioned that make shiro a bad leader dont actually make shiro a bad leader, i addressed each reason individually so 1) in regards to when shiro tries to carry lance outside after lance protects coran from the bomb

why does he do it? well its not a good idea to leave an injured teammate alone, for one for two, if the explosion was within the castle, its pretty reasonable to think the castle isnt safe either ultimately, while the castle is big, you dont want to be cornered in the very place that the galra are likely to infiltrate

what are the galra after? the lions where are the lions? in the castle where will the galra be going then? the castle so where do you not want to be with your injured teammate? the castle

not to mention, without the crystal, the castle is generally nonfunctional the chances of lance being okay are ultimately greater if shiro gets him out of the castle at least, its a risk shiro is willing to take

why tell pidge to come back when shiro will have the easier time getting lance to safety? not to mention shiro is already there with him its not like he could tell when exactly pidge would be done sending coran and hunk off theres also no telling how long it would take for pidge to get to them its not a wise decision to just stay put inside the enemies main target while knowing the team was so separated

tell allura to come back? let keith check the arusian village by himself? thats not a smart idea either we know that it was ruse to separate them, but the team didnt know that at the time dramatic irony

so from shiros perspective, its better if allura and keith go to the arusian village together because at least they have an ally to watch their backs in the event that something is wrong you dont hear that a village is under attack and assume it wont be dangerous safety in numbers    

2) regarding shiro and his decisions about when to fight and when not to fight

its worth mentioning that first and foremost, shiro never makes a decision that he doesnt wait for the others inputs on hes not the type to force them to do something if the majority disagrees with his decisions

but a very important thing about being a leader is knowing when to choose your battles this is especially emphasized in s3 however, whether to fight or retreat hasnt always necessarily been dependent on whether the odds are in their favour or not

one such exception is when they decided to take on zarkons command center

shiro knew that keith was right when he said theyd be bringing zarkon exactly what he wants he wasnt ignoring him shiro was the one who said himself that the odds would be against them even in season 1 it isnt as though he suddenly changed his mind what changed was that they had allura

and allura is a lot more than just a part of the team shes the altean princess shes the true leader of the entire damn war shes too important for them to lose

things they lose if they lose allura? - the ability to wormhole, thus reducing their mobility by a great deal - a key figurehead in the war and the person who best handles the talks and meetings with the other planets

not to mention that she has powers all of them lack, including coran

someone like that isnt exactly easily replaced

shiro said it himself when the others reminded him he was the one who said they shouldnt take on zarkons central command at first they had no choice but to attack zarkons command center

they had to try because, the way he probably saw it, the war was as good as lost if they didnt save allura anyways

in s2 when zarkon manages to keep finding them, keith says they can fight that they should fight (this is actually considered a flaw that he needs to overcome, and is addressed in s3 - he needs to learn to choose his battles) but shiro says that they dont stand a chance against zarkon and his entire fleet

again, he didnt just suddenly change his mind and hes not being hypocritical in any way he explains why they cant because keith doesnt know how to pick his battles yet

they pull back, because shiro doesnt yet see a chance for them to come out of the battle victoriously theyre not prepared yet

later when shiro says that they will be attacking, its different its on their terms its not him listening to keith because he suddenly saw an error in his own judgement or whatever this is shiro acknowledging that there is an advantage to be gained this way they have a chance here that isnt more likely to leave them all dead thats called picking your battles

shiro isnt a bad leader for it in fact, its exactly what will make keith a better leader in s3

3) regarding shiro and keith and leadership 

shiro does not have 'a lot of nerve' to tell keith that he has to control his emotions if hes going to lead

shiro is well aware of the fact that sometimes, when youre put into a position where youre responsible for not just yourself, but a whole team of people, you cant let your judgement be clouded by emotions sometimes the things you have to do are not always the things you want to do

its true that keith is rational and can make smart decisions, but in the context of when shiro says this to keith its because he acknowledges that keith still lets emotions cloud his vision sometimes and the scene prior was one of those times you cant lash out at your team you have to talk to them properly thats the kind of thing shiro is trying to have keith understand

(and for the record, the decision to attack zarkons command center was not a decision that seemed to be based on emotion. at the time they attacked, shiro was not aware of the control zarkon still had over the black lion, so he couldnt have been scared of that and sure he might have been scared about what would happen to himself, to allura, to the team, but it was a risk they had to take because allura is too crucial to their mission - thats not an emotional decision its a smart one)

but hes not saying "dont be like me" to keith when he says keith has to control his emotions hes saying this because he acknowledges that keith has potential but he also acknowledges that his potential is still hindered by things that keith needs to work on and overcome

also, keith going against zarkon was not emotionally driven it was more likely keiths idea of a way to gain a huge advantage in the war no emperor to lead automatically means that the opposing side is weakened substantially

it wasnt necessarily the right thing to do either keith had no idea of what zarkon was capable of (pick your battles - going in blind isnt exactly advisable and coran even TELLS him not to do it. coran has been shown to have known more, which is a given considering he was present 10000 years ago)

also shiro doesnt have blind faith in keith for a long time now, canon has been hinting that shiro and keith have a backstory shiro knows keith better than anyone else because the rescue from the garrison was very clearly not their first meeting ("its good to have you back", “its good to be back”)

also the insinuation that shiro is not fit to lead because he has ptsd... yikes i dont think i need to elaborate on why exactly that implication is yikes-worthy

its true that keith displays leadership potential early on in the show but this doesnt necessarily mean that shiro isnt a good leader and that keith is automatically better

shiro isnt perfect, but hes a great leader canon has told us time and time again that keith has to grow into the role

(also the reason keith follows shiro and not the other way around: shiro changed his life. shiro is a positive person in his life and keith both trusts and relies on him because shiro didnt give up on him. this is why he follows shiro)

shiro doesnt "hold him back" shiros done nothing but push keith forward and support him keith would be insulted if someone thought shiro was any less than his biggest supporter (”if it wasnt for you, my life would have been a lot different”, “shiro is the only person who didnt give up on me -  i wont give up on him”) shiro showing keith reason and explaining why they cant follow through on some of the things keith wants to do isnt "holding him back"

its true keith sees a lot of good stuff in shiro but the same is true for shiro to keith its mutual and shiro tells keith he wants him to lead voltron not because he doesnt want keith to follow him and wants to follow keith instead he tells keith this because shiro acknowledges that sometimes in war, things happen he could die and hes had some close calls he wants keith to lead because he knows he can trust keith to lead the team he knows that if keith leads, even if hes gone the team will be left in capable hands hes been trying to nurture that

4) in regards to keith stopping pidge from leaving and shiro stopping keith

keith is right about pidge putting two people over the universe however shiro is right about how you cant force people to be part of the team you dont nurture bonds that way you dont build a team that way

why? how do you expect to build a functioning team if a member is reluctant to be part of it

personally speaking, when i dont want to do something i dont end up doing the thing as well as i could be and im unhappy doing the thing the whole time

thats not good for the team shiro knows this and so, if pidges mind really cant be changed, he wont force her to stay also, paladins can be replaced and im sure shiro knows that considering when they first met allura, she asked them what happened to the blue lions paladin they know there were paladins before they know that they are not the first they are not the only paladins

it wouldve set them back, but if they really needed to, theyd look for a new green paladin to take pidges place you cant fight a war with someone who isnt willing to fight a war

also to say that shiro doesnt care about finding the holts as much is just.. first of all, weve established that shiro puts their purpose first im more sure that he wants to find them and just knows they dont have the time to put all their focus on finding two people when a universe is at stake

whether they have to find a new green paladin hinges on pidge, but hes not going to force her to stay besides, forcing someone to stay and fight a war... it doesnt sound like a good idea, ultimately keiths heart is in the right place and he has the right idea, but theres more to being a leader than telling people what to do its a job that requires understanding, especially for the people within the team

its true it wouldve been dangerous for pidge, but shiro is a recently escaped captive from the galra empire this, in addition to who he seems to be as a person... i think the last thing he wants to do is keep someone somewhere against their will and force them into doing something

and shiro telling keith he wants him to lead wasnt him trying to force the role on keith he was trying to give voltron the biggest winning chance in the event that he would be unable to lead them (for obvious reasons considering theyre fighting a war)

and thats about everything i have to say but im just leaving these here to organize some of those thoughts its kind of a mess but i tried to address everything i order as best as i could

A/N: IT’S BEEN SO LONG! i’ve been so busy running all over india, i’ve barely been able to write! well, finally, i’m posting something and that should be it for the next few days since my mom’s coming back to mumbai tomorrow and we’re finally gonna get to do stuff again that’s fun for me (aka shop n eat). i’ll try to write tonight, though, since my cousins are all studying and ask me to sit with them as it is. ENJOY IT AND TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK i havent read this over so idk if it’s any good (oops) forgive the typos that are most likely there

The mess hall was too loud. Conversations around Jim were more than abuzz and the volume at which the two unwelcome crew members sitting at his table crunched their synthesized celery made his hands form fists beside either edge of his tray, crumpling the pair of napkins he held. The smell of everyone’s food was becoming unbearable— even his own plate disgusted him. He ground his teeth together in reaction.

He narrowed his blue eyes at the glass of ice water before him, ignoring the goodbye’s the aforementioned crew members offered him. He was trying to focus on the condensation wrapped around the glass instead of the sound of your voice coming from the table behind him. He did his best not to twist in his seat to look at you and almost cracked a molar in the process. He wasn’t going to be the first to break— he couldn’t be the first to break.

But it’d only been two days. Two days since you asked Jim to pick— his stubbornness or you, his silence or you, his irrationality or you, his fear or you. At first, his decision was clear. He couldn’t let what he was most afraid of win and he wouldn’t let it. There were reasons he had built the walls he comfortably sat behind and he wasn’t going to give up those reasons— no exceptions. Now, though, the decision he made pinched him the wrong way. His ribs, tired and sore from his heart’s erratic, forceful beats, felt majority of the blow and his stomach only felt emptiness.

He wanted to pick you. He should have picked you.

He shook his head at the thought and pushed himself out of his seat. He straightened his shirt, his eyes on his shoes, and took a step backwards.

A soft clatter came as a result of his blind step and he heard the clicking of a tongue. “Great.”

He looked over his shoulder before turning and facing you as you stared at youe chest, a wet spot starting at the base of your high-neck uniform and ending below your chest. A half-empty glass was still in your hand and ice cubes were littered over the deck plating floor of the Enterprise mess hall. “Fuck.”

He didn’t inhale, he couldn’t exhale.

He wet his lips and held a paper napkin with thousands of wrinkles to you.

You looked up— first at the napkin, then at him, then at the napkin again. You took it from his fingers and looked at your blue uniform.

“Sorry.” He wasn’t sure for what he was apologizing: crashing into you, the inadequacy of his paper napkin that ripped the instant it touched your uniform, or everything else.

“Yeah, whatever.” You inhaled audibly and brought your gaze to meet his— he looked away. You were neither smiling, nor frowning— odd for such an expressive face. “It’s just water.”

Without much regard for his frozen stance, your shoulder brushed and pushed against his as you took steps towards the agape doors. Jim continued to stand, stare, and sigh.

Jim adjourned the meeting with even less enthusiasm than when he began it— something he, the crew, and anyone else in earshot for his half-hearted introduction didn’t think was possible. He watched as the senior officers on board shuffled out of the room, trying to keep his eyes away from you and Leonard as you spoke even though you were a constant blue blur in his peripheral vision.

“Captain?”

Jim’s gaze met yours immediately. He stood up straighter and unclenched his jaw. He pulled on the hem of his shirt and the high-necked collar felt suffocating.

He didn't know what to say— and his choice made him frown. “Hi.”

You offered him the smallest smile he’d ever seen from you and it lasted for a much-too-short moment. “Captain, I just wanted to make sure you've thought the away party through.”

He tried not to show how much you calling him ‘Captain’ truly bothered him. He wanted to look indifferent. “What do you mean?”

“You’re sending Doctor McCoy and Doctor M’Benga alongside majority of the attending physicians.”

“And?”

You frowned and leaned back against the table behind you, your hands flat against the surface. “It leaves me without much help— which I don't need for current patients. It's just leaving me alone in the medbay when we’re triaging a Federation border planet after a Klingon attack—”

“The Enterprise isn't at risk.”

“I’m just saying, it’s a possibility that—”

“The Klingons that attacked Caleb IV aren’t the toughest, nor are they the most intelligent. They won’t be able to harm the Enterprise.”

“But—”

“With the risk of sounding too much like Spock, there’s no logical reason to worry.”

He watched one of your eyebrows arch upwards. It was the most expression he'd seen over your features in some time. It was oddly satisfying. “At all?”

“From what I've been told: yes.”

“Don’t you usually say nothing is certain is space?”

“Do I?”

You tilted your head. “Send me, too.”

Jim snorted. “Why?”

“Bones and I work faster together than any of the other physicians you’re sending,” you said with a shrug. You then mumbled under your breath, “Especially Krishna and Sirleaf, who basically have one foot in the grave each.”

“Speed’s not at the top of my list of priorities.”

“Then what is? Efficiency? Surgical precision? Lower risk of post-op infection?” you asked, narrowing your eyes further with each question. “Because those should be, along with speed, in a medical situation. And, in that case, you should send me.”

He snorted again and noticed your features flash in reaction. “No.”

“Captain, —”

“I’m not sending you.”

“Is there a reason?”

He nodded with a frown of consideration. “Yeah. And it’s real good so you’re not going.”

“What if there’s an emergency on the planet?”

“If there’s an emergency on the planet and Bones is suddenly unable to do his job,” he began, narrowing his eyes a bit as he let his gaze travel over the empty conference room, “then he has M’Benga and the residents to take over, he has Krishna and Sirleaf to take over, he has nurses. If by some catastrophe all of them are unable to their jobs, we can beam patients aboard.”

“What if—”

“Besides, I need a senior medical officer without their foot in a grave on board.”

“Why? I thought nothing could happen to the Enterprise.”

“That was before I was reminded of the uncertainty of space,” Jim nearly snapped. “And no ‘what if’s’— they’ll never run out and aren’t worth discussing.”

You crossed your arms over your chest and your eyebrows came together. You looked like a stubborn child. “So you’re just going to keep me on board no matter what?”

He pretended to consider it. “Yeah, I am.”

“Why?”

“I already told you: I need a senior medical officer in the medbay.” His voice had grown angrier and his jaw was tensed. He took a short step towards you.

“Then keep M’Benga! He’s got more experience than I do!”

“You’re Bones’ second-in-command since M’Benga decided to take it slow,” he returned, in a louder volume that matched yours. “Having you on board is the closest thing to having him on board.”

You looked away for a short moment and met Jim’s eyes with a light behind your pupils. “In that case, Bones can stay on board and I’ll go.”

“No,” he said after snorting for a third time. “Absolutely not.”

“What? Why? Bones could run the medbay! Wouldn’t it be better to have the real thing instead of a second-string back-up?”

Jim could feel his teeth grinding and his chest puffing out. The anger that rolled off his body in waves didn’t force you back when he moved another inch forward. In fact, he noticed your pupils dilate. “No, (Y/N).”

You looked up at him from where you sat back against the table. “But—”

He leaned over a bit to put his hands on the table, his nose brushing against yours. His oceanic eyes followed yours, only stopping to glance at your lips. “Why are you so dead-set on going?”

“Why are you so dead-set on keeping me here?”

When he kissed you, he kissed you in a way that made him almost forget what you two were arguing about, why you’d been separated for so long, even his own name. He loved kissing you— the way your lips moved against his, the way you pulled on the hair at the nape of his neck, the way your skin felt under his hands.

He wound his arm around your waist and lifted you from the table once your legs were wrapped around him. He spun around to push you against the wall that was previously behind him, sighing at the feeling of your body against his.

As his lips moved to your neck, your voice shook, “We’re broken-up—”

“Stop calling me ‘Captain,’” he said onto your skin, drawing a gasp out of you when he bit down. “That’s not all I am to you.”

You pulled on his hair to bring his eyes back to yours. You were whispering when you spoke, “Then what are you? We’re not together anymore— all you are is my captain.”

He watched your eyes and felt his heart drop to his stomach. “I don’t want that.”

“And I don’t want to date you again,” you shook your head. “You put me through enough.”

“We don’t have to date.” He wanted to, though.

Before he kissed you again, he paused an inch from your lips. “You’re still not going on that mission.”

Jim was growing tired. He didn’t understand why the bags under his eyes never faded and his skin was nearly translucent. His voice was huskier, raspier than usual and his hair seemed to never behave. It was as if the wrinkles on his command yellow shirt appeared and stuck around to match the wrinkles creasing the skin of his forehead.

He was forced into the medbay by Leonard— something about his friend being concerned in a friendly way. Truthfully, Leonard was more concerned about being captained through the never-ending abyss of outer space by a man without any form of energy and every form of unhappiness; he couldn’t be bothered to keep up with the inner workings of Jim’s complicated love life.

As Jim sat in Leonard’s office, he spoke only when handed a newly refilled glass of scotch and it was a simple “thank you” he would offer— he didn’t know what to say otherwise. Leonard was okay with the silence, though, and didn’t pry much more than a simple, “How is everything?” to which he received a shrug in response.

Once Jim was able to excuse himself from the awkward silent drinking session, he walked down the corridors of the starship without any authority in his posture. His shoulders were slumped and his back bent, he completed the look with a small frown that didn’t change no matter who he nodded a greeting towards.

His back straightened when he reached your door, however, and he did his best to do away with his frown as he knocked. He pulled on the hem of his shirt then.

“There has to be something better you can do with your time, Captain.”

Your voice did away with the exhaustion in his limbs and he was effortlessly able to take steps forward into your quarters. He reached behind him to slap his hand onto the control panel, allowing the door to shut as he continued to stare at you and trace your every feature with his gaze. “There isn’t.”

You resisted the urge to lean into his hand as his fingers skimmed over your cheekbone and down to trace your jaw, cupping your cheek and letting his thumb graze over your lips next. You had to stop yourself from sighing. “You look like you need rest.”

He shook his head and clicked his tongue, pressing his lips to yours for moments that were much too short. “What I need is you. Rest is secondary.”

“That’s an interesting thing to say to someone who isn’t your significant other.”

He clicked his tongue before claiming your lips with his once more. “It’s a normal thing to say to someone I spend the night with every night.”

“Say that out loud one more time and you’ll spend this night with your hand.”

He tilted his head. “What, the acknowledgement too much for you?”

“Yes,” you answered, helping him remove his shirt as he walked forwards and you walked backwards in the direction of your bed. “I prefer to pretend this isn’t happening, to pretend that you broke-up with me and I made the sound choice to be done with you.”

“You’re not done with me,” he wanted to ask you, but instead stated it like he was sure— perhaps to bolster his own belief. “Just like I’m not done with you.”

He felt you shiver against him when he pressed his lips to your neck once your t-shirt was tossed aside, his fingers moving up your bare sides. You remained silent as he joined your lips once more, allowing him to control your every move as he guided you towards the bed even more.

He stopped kissing you then. “You’re okay?” he asked, looking over your features as if to memorize them.

You nodded. “Yes. I just— I don’t understand why we aren’t done with each other yet. There’s no emotional fulfillment, it doesn’t make any sense. It’s like an unbreakable habit almost.”

Although he knew what drew him to you— your smile, the smell of your hair, the way you wrinkled your nose when you laughed, just everything about you— he knew you were drawn to him without identifiable reason. If anything, he knew you had reason to be repelled by the thought of him. So, with the intention not to risk anything doing away with his habit, Jim only shrugged.
