i compiled a bunch of subspace and medkit headcanons because they plague me. they plague me. they anyways . uhjjmmm subspace headcanons r. im not gonna lie i got some of these from deadplate. but. THERES!! a lot of these. be prepared 1. I don't think he can eat properly. Not only because of the rot, but because not being able to taste things irks him, so he has to make a smoothie out of it 2. I thuuink i think he already. was struggling with an ED before the disaster. and not being able to taste/the rot makes it. way worse 3. I think! I think he has bipolar and audhd. 4. He keeps his hair short on the side of the rot so it doesn't irritate it 5. hes. extremely touchy. not to be affectionate. he's just always in peoples personal space 6. Often chews on his fingernails and/or picks at his skin. bad habit of his methinks 7. i think he listens to like. metal. specifically freak on a leash and rotting in vain by korn really reminds me of him 8. scarring and burns. like. everywhere. coupled with the rot obviously. i think in his line of work he gets injuries pretty easily even when trying to be careful 9. EXTREMELY tone deaf. but also sometimes ignores social cues on purpose because he knows it annoys people 10. hates the rain. he hates the sound of it. he hates the water. it ruins his day. heres medkits ... 1. Also can't eat very well but its mostly from. after the disaster. he completely lost his appetite and also lost a lot of weight just because it was. really hard for him to find the energy to even get up let alone eat 2. generally kind of. not able to take care of himself very well. even if he can take care of others 3. extremely depressed. like. really bad seasonal depression + chronic (it gets worse when he sees snow though. reminds him of blackrock) 4. during his blackrock days he would straighten his hair. he can't afford to do that now though because its too expensive + too much energy 5. god AWFUL doctors handwriting. scythe hates it. nobody can fucking read it except for medkit 6. He has generalized anxiety, depression, and PTSD, as well as autism 7. hates being touched except for in very specific situations. he also hates being close (physically) to people 8. adding onto the last one, he HATES when people touch his back or his shoulders. IMMEDIATE fight or flight response 9. extremely bad posture. shrimp posture. im telling u 10. painted his horns teal because they were originally green. he doesn't like the color green very much. nor does he like that pinkish-red color (reminds him of subspace) 11. (somewhat canon? not the indie part) usually likes classical music. sometimes dabbles in indie music. he's not into the loud shit 12. violin and piano player .... 13. tried to sand down his fangs at one point. why? i dont know! 14. his sarcasm is crazy. if he's not being sarcastic its not him 15. loves the rain. he likes the quiet and being alone but when it's deathly silent it spikes his anxiety. so the background noise is nice. it also means he has an excuse to stay inside AND!! combined headcanons. things i have that i hc for. both of them 1. both of them have hand tremors. subspace's are a little worse though 2. even though they both have separated (and medkit really tries to stay away) they both still have habits that they got used to from being around the other. medkit still makes extra of things by accident because subspace would always steal it. subspace still keeps a blanket in the lab because medkit would always fall asleep at the desk. i could keep going on im so serious. they are so horribly intertwined in the worst way possible and even if they hate each other that red string is still there. its still there. do u get it. in this essay i will- anyways! thats it for today. sorry guys i needed to YAP

it’s down to time travel, flight, or teleportation. uh.. time travel would be really sick but probably paradoxy in a kind of freaky way? so i’m saying flight so long as flight can get me places faster than walking which combines its benefits with that of teleportation. flight it is. 

2. do you use your powers for Good or for Awesome? 

honestly... mainly for mundane things. like, for hitting up audrey whenever i want and for getting places easily. 

3. if you could wear whatever you wanted, with social judgement/practicality of any sort being a complete nonissue, what would you wear? 

i’d be channeling terrible nineteenth century men literally all the time. from the “showing up at the door after a Wild Romanticism Party, in my shirtsleeves” look to something more polished. but still overall what i imagine the geneva ‘16 kind of aesthetique to be. that or armor of some sort. 

4. what’s your favorite holiday? 

new year’s eve or bust!!! but not like the boring american kind where you get drunk and stress out about who to kiss or whatever, rather the nice russian kind where you.. probably also get drunk, but ALSO just fucking. roll all important holidays into one and fucking throw down. and like give each other presents also with the whole “secular christmas” vibe. 

5. what would your Ideal Home be like? (again, cost and physics and practicality not an issue) 

i lack the imagination to come up with really wild things for these? every time i picture my Ideal Home it’s either a) an apartment in chicago and i live there with someone i love and it’s relatively spacious and well-lit and within walking distance of some nice exciting things, or b) a lighthouse on the wild coast of maine where nobody will ever find me or my future lesbian wife, and we have twenty cats which i’m NOT allergic to and an herb garden and we grow wild strawberries. 

6. if you could cast yourself into any au setting and have any role you wanted, what would it/you be? 

small child voice uh i want to be in starfleet. i have no starfleet-adjacent skills but nonetheless. i can be like. an expert in alien literature. in such a way that makes me a helpful consultant to alien sociologists. hey it’s probably helpful in certain hyperspecific contexts!!! (sideways look at 2x22 the wire). anyway i want to be in starfleet and all my friends are also there? except it’s not during the dominion war or whatever because i don’t want us all to be traumatized. 

7. you get to make one law that will absolutely be implemented on a national level for at least ten years, full government support guaranteed. what is it?

I thought, late last night, after chewing on Will’s visit all evening, that it might be a good time to actually call Ben. It’s not like we’ve not been in touch, but my internet goes down exactly when I want to use it, and I’m starting to wonder just how many messages of mine through their various online media are just sticking out of the low fog I find perpetually above the town even on a good day, I imagine that somewhere between my keyboard and their intended destination they’ve got caught up in a thick cloud, and I think of a side-street thicket that’s had a bag of fridge-magnet words thrown at it, making their own queer kind of poetry as a “goodbye”, a “whatever” and maybe an “incredible” stick out on the topmost branches. So I picked up the phone since nobody uses the phone any more and the later it got the more this incensed me. I’m not one to live in the past but is it curmudgeonly to feel that sometimes a connection really needs to be personal, a real voice across the line? Not each time, but sometimes? Isn’t it just the right thing to do? It’s the right thing to do, I convinced myself, at sometime around 1am, and so I scrolled down to Ben’s number and I confidently tapped, and listened for the ring. The first ring felt triumphant. The second felt amiable. The third felt resilient, but fourth began to feel defeating. By the seventh, Ben picked up. He said “hello?” in that croaky way that people do when they’ve just woken up, so I said, “did I just wake you up?” and he said “no, not at all” in the same raspy timbre, and even though I knew he was lying, I stayed on the line to teach him why you should never lie, at least that’s what I told myself I was doing. Ben was possibly quite happy to hear from me at first, he said he’s been trying to call for a couple of days but each time he’s getting my voicemail, and I’m just going to have to believe that, that his words too have found themselves in that same thicket of fog. Quickly I found I did not know what to say to him, but I get that with Ben quite a lot. It’s no bad thing, I shouldn’t think, but it was then I realised even the phone was not good enough, it wasn’t as personal as I’d like, and for the first time in a while I felt I needed to really see him, really be in his company. I thought he could probably sense this anxiety in my voice and he asked me several times if I was okay, if something was on my mind, before I told him. I said Will came round to drop off my things. And do you know what Ben said? He said, “About time, eh?”. I could barely believe he’d been so flippant about this event. I was not angry at Ben, but I did say to him that actually, it had been quite difficult. Ben said he couldn’t think of why it should be, and I didn’t care to get into it. I started to feel quite cross. Really cross. But what was I to say? I told Ben, I cooed at Ben, that he should go back to bed and get some rest and I would speak to him tomorrow if he was about. He chuckled lightly and said, “you’re cute, thankyou” and before putting the phone down said, “won’t you be glad when you don’t have to deal with this Will stuff anymore? Only a few more days now”, and then I said, “a few more days” with a voice that suggested I was smiling though I was not. I got up out of my chair and got the ladder out of the airing cupboard, and propped it up safely toward the attic to where I half-drunkenly teetered, punching the attic door to bust it open, because I realised in that moment, right after the call, I had no idea what was in my attic and that worried me. I had to know. And would you believe it that all I saw was this cardboard box labelled “BOOKS”? Such a gift! I knew I couldn’t carry it back down so I shifted it further and further toward me by grabbing the top flap of the box and yanking it toward me every so often, and then once it reached the opening of the attic, turned to my side atop the ladder and just pushed the box in such a way that it fell onto the floor. But it gets better than this — the books were all old fusty romance novels, cheap paperbacks that come free with things, there were some self-helps, some very old recipe books, nothing inspiring, but then — a brilliant, royal blue gloss shone from beneath the insipid pages and there it was in all its glory — the Lonely Planet Travel Guide to Sicily. I couldn’t believe it, that here of all places, at this time, in my hands — this felt very much like an intervention, a great one. I flicked through to the first at-random page, and I saw: “Sfincione is a spongy pizza-like Sicilian treat made with tomatoes, onions, and (sometimes) anchovies. Try it at I Banchi in Ragusa, or Francu U Vastiddaru in Palermo”. Right there on the paper, a true gift. The gift of knowledge and therefore friendship, the gift of introduction and social ease. And so I said it to myself, “I Banchi”, “Eee Banchee”, “Eee BAN..chee”, and then, “Sfin-chee-oh-nee… do you sell sfin-chee-oh-nee? I tasted it at Eee Banchee, over in Rrrr-a-GOOSE-ah!”. I couldn’t believe how natural it sounded from me, someone who had never even been to Sicily before, and I thought about that tin of blood orange I bought from the man with the stroke and how I could redeem myself in his eyes. It was 7am now, so I just went out in my pyjamas to see him and say hello and my God, just converse with the man — but his stall was closed. I worried briefly he had died, but I can't afford to worry this much about everything all the time, and I didn't want to kill both my mood and, well, him. The sandwich shop was there, waiting for me and my good mood, the same woman from before, my favourite! And I didn’t even need to ask. I didn't even need to tell her what or how or why — she said, “hello love, same as usual?” and I said, “yes! The same as usual!” before asking, “The Sicilian stall, just by the coffee stall, has he gone?”, and how sweetly she replied, “no love, he doesn’t do Thursdays, but I know he's back on tomorrow?” and as she said this she thunked my sandwich into my two cupped hands with a smile that we both shared together. I thanked her, I paid her, I smiled at her, and I came home again. I can't believe how much I've got done and it’s not even 9am — and let me tell you, the ham is so good today, and the onions so crisp. I've never noticed this with sandwiches but if you smell the bread up-close the dough gives off an aroma that seems to trigger an instantaneous calming response, I felt my pulse lower, my breathing steady itself, like I could have tucked up under a lettuce leaf and slept for all time. Tomorrow, I thought. Tomorrow I will go and I will ask for sfincione, or maybe even something else! And today, I’m ready to sleep.
