I cannot believe there are people still saying that Kacchan having calmer and chillier scenes is OOC of him? Like?? If he isn't shouting or yelling all the time he's OOC??? Did they forget all the scenes where he was calmer than usual even before this recent development or what? It's like he's got one (1) personality trait, to them. I mostly blame the anime for this tbh...
The damage from Fallen Angels' early mistranslations and BONES' no-nuance stereotyped Kacchan have long seeped into fanon’s perception of him...that the misinterpretations of him still persist (with misinformation spread by his haters and from those who don’t even read the manga) despite what Hori's canon has consistently shown otherwise. To the point many can't even believe what's on the page anymore (claiming everything's ooc) when it no longer matches up to the outdated, flanderized version of him in their heads. Dx
But Kacchan's quietly observant, composed & rational, deeply introspective, and self-assured calm sides are some of my favorites, because beyond all the explosive gags, it's in those moments where you can tell just how serious, dedicated, and sharply controlled he is when things are important to him. :O Those moments mean a lot (that it’s no wonder he snaps in frustration at those in-universe who don’t take him seriously.) Even from early on for example:
After Deku saves him from the Sludge villain, Kacchan is bitterly quiet before he confronts him about it.
When Kacchan overhears Todoroki's past, he's calmly shocked, but quietly keeps everything confidential to himself - it’s not his place to breach anyone’s trust or privacy.
When Deku loses in the sports fest, Kacchan calmly observes with a quiet sense of loss, as if he’s just affirmed how he’d already known Deku's reckless self-endangerment would lead to this.
After Kamino and All Might's loss, Kacchan is eerily calm & quiet, even when he (politely) thanks AM, which the narration also deliberately points out as something conspicuously important.
When Kacchan confronts Deku before DvsK2, his sharp, rational interrogation is deceptively calm & composed as he unloads the tea. Simmering in tightly controlled turmoil just below the surface. And at the end when he calmly accepts and promises to keep AM & Deku's secret, we (should already) know that Kacchan's words can be trusted.
When Kacchan instructs the kids in the remedial course, he’s very calm & sincere when he speaks from his own personal experience about facing/overcoming weakness.
When Kacchan flawlessly wins their class A vs B match, he does not gloat in their classmates' shared victory, but calmly walks away in self-assured silence instead. He's here to achieve exactly what he's set out to do (just like how he announced he’d win at the sports fest), but with the air of a pro who already knows how to do his job; no praise necessary.
When Kacchan takes the lead barking orders & strategy at the end of the war arc, his composure (despite being panicked for Deku's life) to get shit done in the face of dire emergency is precisely the sought-after, reliable quality expected of those from the best.
After waking up in the hospital, he's very calm (at first) when he interrogates precisely what happened.
When he confronts Endeavor about leading the mission to find Deku, he presents both himself (with a tie) and his arguments with as much calm formality he can muster - this shit's important to him.
Then when he actually finds Deku and unloads his long, pent-up apology to him, everything is 100% serious and sincere here. His calmness, control, and composure at this point should be expected.
...Among many other examples besides these. But they’re all carefully consistent IN-character moments that have always been there since the beginning, noticeable to those who’ve already paid attention. AND as we recently see, even more apparent now as Kacchan further grows & matures into his own. Expect even more as Kacchan becomes the best, well-rounded version of himself.
