The Helena diaz of it all has me fascinated. I’ve said for a long while that Eddie’s real issues are his mommy issues and this episode just cemented for me that we’re gonna explore that and deal with it.

Because it’s Helena who forced Eddie to grow up to fast - because her husband wasn’t around much - so she pushed Eddie into de facto parent and husband role ls - selfishly filling her needs and ignoring the damage it was doing to her son (it is a form of abuse in my book).

Eddie then had the audacity to fall in love with and marry Shannon and get her pregnant. It’s why Helena was always so off with Shannon - she was punishing her. She is also punishing Eddie for all of this and his refusal to return to El Paso only cemented further her bitterness and resentment.

Now she does have Ramon back she doesn’t need Eddie any longer to fill that role so she is still punishing him and part of that is tied into her glee over now getting to parent Christopher - something she has always been intent on doing the doppelgänger just gave her the opportunity- as well as allowing her to further punish her son and his love of Shannon.

Her barbed comments about building a pool were all about showing what she can provide Christopher - how she is parenting him better than Eddie - it’s part of her mind games - making Eddie feel like more of a failure as a parent to his son.

The reality of course is that the reverse is true - Helena’s parenting is all superficial, flash and showy - it isn’t the hard day to day parenting when things get tough and you have to be the bad guy. While Eddie has made mistakes, there is nothing superficial, flash, or showy about his parenting. It’s why bucks comments about Eddie being a great dad are so important.

Eddie feel like a failure right now and that he is entirely to blame for everything. But in reality, while he does bear a bit of the responsibility, the truth of the matter is that he needs to learn and deal with the fact that all of it actually stems from Helena and her abuse of her young son - Shannon never stood a chance just like Eddie never has.

Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.

It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.

Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.

The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.

This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.

Actors are not the same as voice actors.

And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.

I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.

People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.

Voice Actors ≠ Actors.

Your tag is keeping on playing in my head. Like - just how much of Tales had Jack spent thinking of his revenge and taking over it all. And how much he actually enjoyed spending time. Could he really look through Rhys' memories or was it just some folders Rhys kept on his Echo Eye. I personally think Jack had some type of attachment to Rhys, even if it wasn’t his intentions like… at all. Sure, getting back on Helios and taking over Rhys body was always the main goal, and whether he came to like Rhys or not wasn’t gonna stop him from going through with his plan, but Jack was almost predisposed to eventually become obsessed with him. Strap in, I’m about to ramble

First of all, I imagine that Rhys reminded him a lot of Angel. Rhys was young, he looked up to Jack almost naively so, but he was snarky and also defied him sometimes which Angel did too. I made a real long post about this a couple months ago but basically, Rhys and Angel share a lot of similarities in how Jack treated them. Jack probably did feel proud over Rhys at times, and thankful that it was Rhys and not some other Hyperion employee with the personality of a napkin. It feels more personal than just “let’s manipulate this kid and take his body”, even if that ultimately was the end goal.  And after Jack was plugged into Helios and found out about what happened to not just Angel but Nisha as well? Not to mention Wilhelm being dead and Timothy leaving for the casino? Rhys was the only one Jack somewhat trusted who wasn’t already dead or long gone

But also, imagine this: you’re quite literally inside someone else’s brain. Everything you see and hear, everywhere you go, everyone you interact with, is through this dweeb with the most questionable fashion sense on Pandora (which says a LOT). No one can see you except for him. You’re dependent on him in every sense of the word. If he pisses you off, you can’t do your usual routine of beating or killing him. You HAVE to get close to (or at the very least, used to) him, something your paranoid ass hasn't allowed yourself to do for years

And honestly, Rhys’ software has bled into Jack as much, if not more, as the Jack AI has bled into Rhys. This is just my personal headcanon but I definitely think some part of Jack felt a little hollow when he left Rhys’ head on Helios, almost like having a tooth ripped out (or… being the tooth that got ripped out). Some part of him expected Rhys to be as dependent on Jack as Jack was on him, which is why he thought Rhys would just mindlessly agree to essentially be his meat puppet. But then he not only rejected him, he tried to leave too. The only one Jack had left, who became such a huge part of his holographic life, physically and emotionally. The only one who hadn’t died, left or abandoned him up until this point, wanted to leave

Jack was back on Helios, back on his throne, and he had everything in his power to regain control of Hyperion. Despite how horrified Rhys was over Jack’s plan, he didn’t have any intentions to kill Jack, and had Rhys been any less important to Jack, he could have let him go or commanded someone else go after him while he focused on getting another employee to give him their body. The only problem was that Jack was attached to Rhys and took this as a betrayal, just like Angel and Moxxi had been close to him until they betrayed him too. So what if Helios paid the price for Jack’s revenge? So what if Jack was going to die killing Rhys? It was too personal to not risk everything for

This is a very complicated way of saying I definitely think Jack cared about Rhys, whether that be because he was emotionally attached or because he was literally inside this guy’s brain and couldn’t help but get attached. Everywhere he looked, there was Rhys and only Rhys. So yeah, he DEFINITELY thought about Rhys a lot. Probably more so than Katagawa did. It’s a special kind of horrific <3

I am thinking about. Jamie and the Second Doctor.

Because out of all the incarnations of the Doctor, Two is arguably the one who uses manipulation and disguises the most. He thrives on using people's intelligence against them, on tricking people, on bluffing and his bluffs working. He has a different disguise every story pretty much and is constantly playing some kind of role.

And then you look at Jamie, and some of Jamie's most front and center traits are his loyalty and his honesty (and protectiveness, but less applicable). Jamie is loyal to a fault and extremely trusting of the Doctor. He's honest and straightforward and deeply caring.

And Jamie is the one who sticks by the Second Doctor for as long as he physically can--and you'd look at those two characters, one who is manipulative and cunning, and one who is loyal to a fault, and you'd think the Doctor would easily be able to take advantage of Jamie, that Jamie would just be a tool for him but he's not, they're on equal footing. Jamie pulls the Doctor down and reminds him what being human is all about.

He'd get to the part where The Riddler is mysterious and nice and rambling about the dangers of the world a lot faster than he'd planned. He'd be incredibly confused, mildly offended, and just a bit of a frightening teaspoon of validated.

You must be aware that his "Lima syndrome" started the second he started to snoop past the boundaries of your initial friendship's information barrier, so it isn't truly the beginning when he whisks you away. He fully, truly, honestly believes that he's saving you from a much worse fate, and whether or not that rings true depends on your personal situation (the one you decide in your head when you read).

In any case, it's intended that his sweet dove's situation in life is not good before they are taken in. They are physically and mentally in poor shape, and it is what leads to his decision to keep them. If nobody else is willing to care for them, Edward will. Edward wants to be someone's hero. Edward wants to be your hero.

He will take his black hat off and trade it in for grey for the opportunity to see you smile. He will sanitize his info leaks for you, he will stop reverse shelling into anything that will have him to provide you adequate care. You won't hear what he does to hurt the bad people because he'll put earmuffs on you.

Edward will placate your needs so that you don't cry all the time, and what he cannot soothe in perceived changes of action, he will pursue in physical soothing. Because he has access to what you watched to fall asleep to at night or the videos you browsed along to relax to, he can emulate them to soothe you. Add a dash of his need for physical contact and you will be made duly aware of how wanted - no, needed - you are rather swiftly.

That's not to say you've skipped the on-boarding process completely, though. He's still cold and calculating when you 'arrive', though he tosses you niceties no normal captor would much sooner. "'Cause you won't stop," The Riddler remarks, fighting off the urge to coddle you.

Eventually, and in far less time than expected, you will pry off his external persona and find a trembling, aching man underneath who cries when you cry and catches you when you fall if only to tangle himself in you. You can comfort yourself in the knowledge you are a necessity, though before long you may wish you had vouched for distance.

You'd be foisted into The Riddler's lap and taught how to put together a vape pen, his gloved fingertips tapping every surface they rest on rhythmically as he explains carts and pods to you in purposefully grand swaths of detail, repetitious and meandering, perhaps even purposefully repeating syllables if they give you goosebumps. His voice would be soft and gentle, voice changer set only to obscure the pitch of its' user. The way his vocals lilt would be suggestive of adoration rather than the chalky-corrosive sound of his streams.

It's hard to cry when he calls you good and sweet for every little thing you do, and it's hard to sniffle when The Riddler keeps you close and abuses your autonomous sensory meridian response to coax you into relaxing in his grasp. It can be hard to recall the true gravity of your situation, and the way it slips your mind fills you with an unfamiliar wrongness.

But Edward and The Riddler are the same man, and though he may pretend that his edges are softened around you, he is nothing if not blade-sharp and teeth-bared.

He's only silky to your fingertips.

Do not forget the lion of a man that lays with you. He may obscure the redness on his teeth and the glint when they're bared dull over your neck, but he is still a serial killer at dusk and still disappears to enrich himself.

Two weeks after anime Nanami's death and there are still ppl bitching about how sick Gege is to k*ll off his favorite character brutally like that. I started to think those ppl conveniently skipped the fact that Gege had canonically wrote Nanami as the most gentleman and (not) arguably had the best personality among JJK's adults that made his character so loved by many. That the way his death was narrated is without question better than other deaths in the story. As we saw him gave his best to protect others and being worn down first then his last moments with Yuuji and Haibara. That it was clearly shown how impactful his death was for Yuuji. That all of those narratives combined made Nanami such an unforgettable supporting character. Which spoke a lot about how Gege treated Nanami as a character and it's definitely not a bad writing or doing him ugly.

but just Jay and Nya becoming some form of primary mentors or if you want to, have them as adoptive parent (that is after the inevitable memory gain) to Sora specifically

Nya already was paired off with her a lot during season 1 of DR

All three know the struggle of intense identity issues for years.

Both adults felt abandoned by their parents, either while as a child or after finding out later in life despite either hoping or knowing it was for their own good. And Sora was disowned by her own parents, their beliefs chosen over her.

They could both comfort her after losing Arin (assuming he isn't found already) because they know what it's like to lose a best friend after making the wrong descisions that felt right in the moment e.g Jay beating up Cole out of jealousy or Nya considering other options even when in a relationship because she was second guessing her choices. (Just the entire love triangle thing. I so believe that Jay was Nya's best friend outside of her brother when she moved in, even when they were dating and I'm dying on that hill because of the little screen time she gets with anyone that isn't those two, or a ten year old that more becomes her little brother and an old dude.)

Lessons could be given over building tech or fixing cars. They even have little competitions to see who could do the best original work or make the most improvements to an old one.

Jay has the most extensive weapon catalogue and could help her choose which primary one she would like to work with. As well as maybe try to expose her to several of his many side hobbies.

Nya can teach her how to deal with perfectionism and not feeling strong with your own element in those times that Sora's still having doubts about her capabilities despite being tournement champion.

Maybe they can try teaching her spinjitzu outside of Lloyd's scheduled training and show what worked for them (It's definetly helpful that one of them was the first to learn it.)

I'm not saying once she achieves it they both would be like "whoo, I taught her that!" but they totally would.

like imagine how proud they would be once she goes from learning spinjitzu to reaching her full potential after working through whatever her primary issue is (I still don't know exactly maybe it would be something to do with a need to fix things or take over because you don't have the fullest faith in the capabilities of others and learning to trust others to do it or fix the issue themselves. It's been a long time since I've seen season 1 so just spitballing with what season 2 gave me)
