As flamboyant as our boy John is, I don’t see him as the type to crossdress just for the heck of it. So you would have to give him the incentive.

Maybe you made a bet where the loser had to do whatever the winner said. Probably something sexual or violent, tbh. Like “who can get who to cum first” or “how many lackeys can the other kill” or something along the lines.

Obviously you won, which John likely would’ve seen coming anyway but his curiosity won out over his pride so he wasn’t too upset about it.

You were certain the whole ensemble would be uncomfortable for him, but you were salivating at the imagery. 

You told John to wait for you at his ranch, make sure they wouldn’t be disturbed, and to be naked and blindfolded. On the way back from shopping you came across a lingerie shop and ended up getting him a pair of cute little lacy panties - you couldn’t help it! What was just supposed to be a fun bet ended up taking over your whole debauched brain. 

Surprisingly, when you got to his ranch he was doing exactly what you’d told him to. Either he trusted you a whole bunch or he was very stupid and horny. Probably both.

He struggles in the stilettos but honestly? Not that much. Either he’s a natural born hoe or he’s worn them before.

“Well, well. It seems you have some good taste after all, Deputy. This isn’t bad.”

“I can guarantee you that if I wasn’t so busy killing and being killed by your cultists that my fashion would be so dope.”

He gives himself a last once-over as he says, “If you said that before now I wouldn’t be so sure. But maybe you do have some potential.”

Arilena Ara - “Fall from the sky”

Hmm, well this is awkward

There you have it, my first impression of the song formerly known as “Shaj”. Four words I’ve written down after hearing the song, while the others got at least a full paragraph. Then it won FiK, completely passing me by as it did. 

Since then, my opinion has been has been bouncing up and down between mild like and even milder dislike ever since, before finally settling "meh this is boring either way”. Imagine caring about “Fall from the sky”. I don’t. Neither should you. 

Song Analysis

Christ how do I even do this? Does brutal honesty works? Okay, then: “Fall from the sky” is a completely unremarkable song, devoid of traits. It is generic balladeering 101. It’s bechamel sauce. It’s vanilla ice cream. It is as colourful as primer paint and as fun as watching said paint dry. If the tune didn’t put you to sleep, then the lyrics would (“I’m gonna spread my wings, for I am destined to fly” - who even writes cliché tripe like this? 

Fittingly enough, the revamp did cause Arilena to “fall from the sky” at ESCUnited, by which i mean her score in the polls PLUMMETED faster than the speed of gravity <3 How was she even that high in the first place? Like, this:

isn’t that good? Arilena is a good perfomer, yes, but like... she cannot carry this blandfest by ehrself. Yet, people were unironically comparing “Shaj” to "Suus”? SUUS? S U U S????? I *hate* “Suus” but good lord no. “Suus” was shrill, diabolical and a walking nightmare, but one thing it definitely NEVER was, was boring. 

If anything, “Shaj” is a “Kruna”. A shouty midtempo bore, crippled by its datedness, somehow finding a place of reverence because the person singing it is a glame blonde in a punk gothic dress (or whatever umbrella term you’d put Arilena’s dress under - I am partial to “tarantula couture” myself), which attracts the snobs-but-not-rly-snobs-cuz-they-are-basic-shh-don’t-tell’em basics like moths to a flame, like birds to a pane of glass (okay, Laurell). God why am I still writing about “Shaj” it is DULL END OFF.

Yes well, you really cannot discuss the cold Yin of “Shaj” without mentioning the warm Yang of “Me tana”. I mean what *exactly* was wrong with this song again?

Elvana Gjata - “Me tana”

Okay, before we continue, a PSA: “Me tana” is NOT a Fuego clone. Folk Dance was a thing before Fuego. Reggaeton was a thing before Fuego. Songs in the same genre as “Fuego” aren’t “Fuego Clones”. STOP SPREADING FAKE NEWS.

Anyway having said that, “Me tana” (whose closest living relatives are “Origo” and “Qele qele”), was a pretty good folk/dance/pop blend, even if its staging dabbled a bit too much into the Fuego pool (staging. not song. STAGING), but I am confident it would’ve found its own place and niche had the 2020 contest come to fruition. 

My personal pet theory: a lot of the Arilena fandom stems from her beating Elvana and not due to “Shaj” itself. I can defintitely tell because the juror that made “Me Tana” lose, Mikaela Mingle, ALSO gained a cult following after Elvana lost and well... Keep getting pressed, losers.

So am I an Elvana fan myself? Well, not really? However ,i do like “Me tana” a lot though, and  I think it was leagues ahead of “Shaj” in the pretty much every category, mostly because *Shajte* itself isn’t (and never was) a good song to begin with.

Valon Shehu - “Kutia ë Pandorës”

Lol imagine making your way through a string of dated ballads and dated rock songs and like, typical balkanic folk pop Except It’s In Albanian, and suddenly you’re smacked full in the face by an unapolegetic SYMPHONIC METAL SONG <333333 Written by SER EUGENT OF HOUSE BUSHPEPPER NO LESS!!! Kicking and punching their air in front of the camera non-stop <33333 Valon gives me LIFE and I really wish we got a dedicated metal song in this Former Contest, but alas. (Yeah, “Take Me As I Am”, but that one transcends labels)

Albania 2020 vs Albania 2021

“Shaj” was always a borderline qualifier at best, and the revamp did it no favours. “Fall from the sky” wpuld have been dead on arrival. 

However, I was pleased when Albania announced the revamp initially? See it as win/win: either Shaj would be transformed into a GREAT pop song, making the loss of, well everything that wasn’t “Shaj” in FiK, justifiable. Or, Albania would fumble it by stripping down the song even more and getting rid of all of its unique qurks, which was a MASSIVE slap in the face of any idiot who had ever claimed that “Me tana” would’ve flopped in Rotterdam (a breed of idiot that absolutely deserve to be clowned at every juncture, preferably by their own hand).

Anyway, even though “Fall from the sky” is dead and FiK will probably still be held in december anyway, I would want RTSQ to just pick Arilena again? “Shaj” was *SHAJTE* but Arilena herself was... okay? Good, even? She gave me a GLIMMER of talent during the live, which is in itself a small miracle given how thoroughly Not Good her song was. And I mean, just the ~mere principle~ of 2020 artists getting conned out of their rightful place in ESC by the EBU forces me to root for Arilena’s return in 2021*. Make it happen, RTSQ.

Everything surrounding “Shaj” was the usual Albanian stuff (boring geriatric ballad wins, gets revamped into an even MORE boring geriatric ballad), but i’m willing to give Albania a senhead for producing an unapolegetically fun NF with some legit good modern entries (ALBANIA! Trying modern! THE CONCEPT!) and another for setting the stage for the rest of the NF season of SHOCK winners. Albania set the seasonal trend of “Audience Darling Mysteriously Bombs At The 11th Hour” and without it, the rest of the season would’ve felt a lot less freaky!.

mx in sg: the experience

FHJGDGHSHGFGGHD as usual starting off with the keyboard smash anyway! ill be talking about my experience seeing mx live yesterday (3/3) second part is abt when mx were on stage but its quite dry bc i dont remember much

ill be going in chronological order so [jooheon voice] lets get it

i was gonna meet my friend (karissa) at 3:30 because we were going to meet the person selling us our tickets at 4pm but that got delayed until like 5pm which was fine though

anyway i met her and we started queueing because although official queuing was supposed to start at 6pm they pushed it forward to 3pm (which was unfortunate for those who were busy and couldnt come until much later - the organizer never released an official statement saying the queuing started earlier) 

so as soon as karissa and i arrived at like. the place (near the venue) we got lost for about a whole 5 minutes lmao so i texted james asking him where the hell . they were and we made it and joined the queue immediately (we were the last few people of the second batch) 

we just sat there and. collected freebies and our banners (for the fan events) while we waited for the seller to come give us our tickets 

when they came i was like . fucking screaming because one of the seller was someone i knew from primary school (4 years ago) and i was likeudghdgghdhsh??????? that was the highlight of the daydhfhs

after we bought the tickets and shit we were slightly concerned they wouldnt work lmao but they did god bless

while we waited for the doors to open and stuff a group of people did dance covers of mx songs and later other groups too everyone was cheering for them which was nice fgfghdgh

the hype died down and we just waited quietly until it hit 6pm and i started listening to the day6 stream LMAO but after 4 songs i had to stop because suddenly everyone was standing up?? 

for nothing though because we sat down like 30 minutes later at around 7? 7:30? everyone stood up again and this time people were given wrist tag things u kno.. ya there were three (?) kinds i think gold for those who held a superfan ticket, pink for general admission and some other colour for those who got tickets for free and could sit on chairs dhdghs 

it was a free standing event in an outdoor space so superfan ticket holders got to stand closer to the stage? and those with general admission had to stand behind us and it was separated by a barricade 

we entered at like 8pm because we were the second batch (there was a third batch behind us) and it was already filled?? not exactly but from where we were standing we couldn’t really see the stage 

in the end we were in the middle which wasnt exactly the best but its definitely better than those standing all the way at the back rip 

i think at like 7:45 they started playing the music videos and everyone was shouting the lyrics it was cute i loved it but my throat told me to die after i yelled for like all of their mvsjhdgdghd 

also when all in played u bet my ass i jumped up and downdhg

also water wasnt allowed inside which i think is normal so i chugged mine down as fast as i could before entering (i had a little left and the lady let me in with it thanks queen) (i drank it all before they even came on stage)

the hype was real though and it was great 

when it hit 8:30pm the introduction video started and suddenly i was getting pushed forward and wow . dont go if ur not a fan of people invading your personal bubble. i wish fans had more sense to Not push around and stuff but what can we do rip 

other than that when they came out oh gOD when they came out i was likebfhgddgs??!?!??!?! i had to stand on my tip toes to see them

There are three reasons why they haven’t talked since last night. First, Todoroki’s room is on the fifth floor and his is on the second so even with a subtlety that he has never possessed, he’d have no plausible deniability. Second, facing Todoroki after actually touching his face needs a fortitude that he also does not have. Third, Todoroki usually comes back by two but it’s now an hour past and even though talking things out with his mother would probably take some time, could it also be because–

“Deku-kun, slow down!” Uraraka huffs from behind him.

Izuku immediately slows, making a surprised noise. “Sorry, Uraraka-san!” he says quickly as Uraraka catches up.

She shakes her head and grins. “Do you always mumble when you run?”

He’s run with Todoroki once, Kirishima twice. The two of them never said anything. Come to think of it, Izuku once thought about what Kacchan must be like with Kirishima and the crew, and then Kirishima suddenly started a conversation about colorful carrot-and-stick study sessions. It would also explain the next day why a scowling Kacchan sat down diagonally from him in a vacant library full of other very vacant tables.

“I do,” Izuku says in despair. He wracks his brains for any instance of talking about All Might or One for All, and, confident in his recollection, curses his equally confident brain-to-mouth motor neurons.

“Oh, there’s Todoroki-kun!” Uraraka says cheerily and waves to Todoroki, who’s obviously coming back from the main gates, casual wear and messenger bag and a placid expression–

Izuku coughs. “Let’s race to the dorms,” he says, totally suave, and Uraraka eyes him thoughtfully before placing her hands on his back and shoving him in Todoroki’s direction.

“Loser takes the winner’s dinner tray!” she chirps and dashes off.

Meanwhile, Izuku tries to right his balance and in fact does not vault headfirst into flower bushes. He does, however, stumble right into Todoroki’s path, and Todoroki catches him by the arm even after he’s found his footing.

It looks like he’s striking a weird pose, so he quickly clears his throat and straightens up. Todoroki lets his hand fall.

A cricket awkwardly chirps in the silence between them.

“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable last night,” Izuku says, equally awkward.

“You didn’t.”

Todoroki inclines his head toward the path, and they start walking back together.

“She said that the scar is a symbol and reminder,” Todoroki says without preamble. He closes his eyes with a sigh and admits, reluctantly, “I didn’t think a scar could mean something good when it comes from something bad.”

Izuku smiles a little sadly. “My hero name,” he offers, and Todoroki opens his eyes. “Before, it meant something bad, but then Uraraka-san changed it to something good.” He brightens up. “People can find strength in the things they’ve lived through, Todoroki-kun!”

“That’s because you’re optimistic and idealistic,” Todoroki replies, coming to a stop before the dorm’s double doors. Izuku also abruptly stops short of his nose colliding with Todoroki’s back.

Todoroki is standing before him, and he blinks, mouth suddenly dry.

“But that’s not a bad thing. Thanks, Midoriya,” Todoroki says, turning around.

This is a total mistake. Izuku didn’t think to back away earlier and now is currently reaping what he’s sowed: Todoroki’s face, above his own, looming, completely in his field of view; a different angle from last night but also, from this perspective, Todoroki has quite literally become the entire world.

Todoroki blinks at their proximity, and when the breath leaves Izuku’s lungs, inviting rushing white noise and a crashing brink, the earth quakes in his chest cavity, a heart with faults and colliding beats.

He will wonder, to this day, why he didn’t step back, and he will never have the answer, because the wind answers, breezing past them; Todoroki, in his own way, answers, eyes open and clear, brow smoothing, mouth softening, head bowing, and you know what else answers? The doors that were definitely not knocked on, because the sound of wood banging against brick makes them spring apart. Izuku chokes, coughs, and cringes away.

Jirou gives them a knowing look, adjusting her arm strap, gearing up for a run. Out of Todoroki’s sight, Kirishima pumps up an encouraging fist at a stricken, wheezing Izuku.

“Midoriya. Breathe,” Todoroki tells him, and smiles.
