Being grouped with Jeon Jungkook (he/him) for your first class on the first day of your first Zoom semester truly sets the standard.

By no means do your other classes suck; they’re quite enjoyable, more relevant to your area of study. They’re familiar which makes them comfortable, your Zoom meetings filled with faces you’ve seen time and time again the last four years. The material interests you, so you definitely don’t have anything against them or your classmates.

That being said, no one is prepared for the awkwardness that comes with each and every Zoom meeting. You never thought you’d be embarrassed to turn your mic on— to speak in a class filled with your peers. And the meetings are all like that, filled with uncomfortable silences and endless black screens.

You wish there was a Jeon Jungkook (he/him) in every class.

Jungkook’s just got this bubbly aura to him, this magnetic presence that staples itself into the back of your mind with each passing day. No one fills a Zoom call like he does, making every person laugh and smile like him.

Wednesday rolls around and you find yourself a little disheartened when you don’t get sorted into the same randomized group as him again. Disappointment melts into annoyance when you find out how incompetent your other classmates are, refusing to speak in the small group or just completely clocking out all together. A lot of them didn’t do the reading— the one you stayed up all night doing —and your first partnered assignment of the semester finds you doing it all by yourself. Muted mics, black windows, complete radio silence; you hated it all.

You find yourself weirdly longing for Jeon Jungkook’s presence, even if he’s only there to talk about some movie he saw last night. No one is as much of a chatterbox as him, can’t even hold a candle to the way he draws everyone in with his mindless conversations. At least he speaks during Breakout Rooms, you think bitterly.

Anyway, the first week of classes ends and your brain is a frenzied mess. There’s schedules to memorize, professors to impress, assignments to plan out. There’s definitely no time to sit around and fantasize about the curly haired cutie in one of your general classes. The weekend is spent trying to organize your planner, filling in due dates and exam days ahead of time. It’s your last semester and you’re dead set on making it your best one yet. There’s a lot of written work this time around, analyses and research papers that need to be organized. The road ahead is manageable, but you’ll have to work hard to keep it that way for the next five months.

Most notably, there’s one group project waiting for you, which leads you to Friday. Sitting at your desk, bright and early, absolutely dreading being assigned to your group.

Jungkook is early this time, not like on Monday where he’d been one of the last to filter in, and he’s looking as chirpy as ever. Donning this horrendously hot pink shirt, completely unlike the neutral tones he’d worn during your last two meetings and that decorate his room, and the cutest pair of circle glasses sitting on his nose. He says his regularly scheduled ‘good morning’ to you all and receives a collective response from the rest of the class that not even your professor got.

Speaking of the professor, you’ve been giving him the stink eye this whole time. Not that he can tell, given the fact he’s probably miles away in his own home while you angrily glare at him through your webcam. It’s this old guy who’s decided to sort you all into semester long groups for the class, which is the absolute worst. These types of groups always go the same way: you make a group chat promising to study together, those plans fall through, and then everyone just leeches off of each other for homework answers. And in most cases, it’s you handing over your homework answers because no one else ever bothers to do anything. Sadly, it’s a routine you’ve had to suffer through many times in your academic career.

The thought makes you sick. Having to spend another semester being labeled as the bossy, nerdy dictator of the group? Not exactly how you wanted to spend the last few months of college, but there’s nothing you can do. Maybe this time around you’ll just let it be, won’t fight it (and by it, you mean your lazy classmates when they inevitably try to guilt trip you for homework) and simply let it run its course.

“I’m going to put you guys into Breakout Rooms with your new groups!” your professor claps excitedly, and then you and the rest of your classmates are forced to watch him lean too close to the camera as he begins clicking around to find the preset groups he’s assigned the class. “Remember, guys, this is it for the rest of the semester. So if something isn’t right, let me know by the end of today.”

Man, this was going to suck, you groan. The syllabus had said that the purpose of these groups was to keep you all connected with your classmates during these trying times, to give you the same opportunities in-person learning would. Frankly, you’re not too worried about making friends with everyone in this large class. Most of them are younger than you anyway, save for Jeon Jungkook (he/him) and a handful of others who are apparently in your year. Befriending lowerclassmen only to have to bid them adieu in a few months seems awfully sad, a little too heartbreaking. You really just want to get a good grade in this class, collect the last of your credits, and put this whole college experience behind you.

Your thoughts are wrapped up by the pop-up message that appears on screen.

The host is inviting you to join a Breakout Room: Group 12

You sigh, contemplate dropping this class for all of two seconds, before dutifully accepting the request. Worse comes to worst, you make up some lie to tell your professor that you’re allergic to group work and hope it works. (It won’t.)

You sit through the mandatory loading screen for a few seconds before being abruptly dumped into your new room, Group 12, or so the message had said. There’s no one else here yet, which isn’t really a surprise. A lot of your classmates are probably like you, scowling at the pop up message every time your professor sends you into small groups before accepting the request. So you chill by yourself, eyes tracing over your own mirrored image. The notes on last night’s reading are neatly laid out before you, your copy of the book off to the side.

Another beat and then, much to your surprise, Jeon Jungkook (he/him) is appearing in your room. “Oh,” he says, round eyes magnified by the thick lens of his glasses, the glare of the computer’s glow casting a funny shape across the lens that momentarily robs you of his pretty eyes. His pretty pink lips stretch into a smile, upper lip thinning out a bit when he flashes you those perfect teeth. “Hi, __,” he greets politely, bubbly.

It’s embarrassing how much his presence affects you, your back going ramrod straight in a terrible attempt to compose yourself. “Hi, Jungkook,” you manage to get out, fingers nervously reaching for something, anything, to ground yourself. They land on a pencil.

Jungkook doesn’t seem even the slightest bit aware of the commotion he causes within you. “I was really nervous for these groups,” he begins rambling right away, lips pushing down into an exaggerated frown as he shivers at the memory. “But I’m glad I got placed with someone hardworking like you!”

Despite how sweet he sounds, you’re not entirely sure if he’s buttering you up just to take advantage of your ‘hardworking’ attitude later down the road or if he’s genuinely being polite. The little information you know about Jungkook wants you to believe it is the latter; he’s very kind, sweet and nice in a way that makes everyone he speaks to feel warm. Still, for all you know this could be some elaborate ruse of his to make you trust him now and then convince you to do all the work for the rest of the semester.

Tentatively, you ask, “and how would you know that?” You try your best to keep your usual snappiness out of your voice, pose it simply out of curiosity. But everything you say or do feels like a stark contrast to Jungkook and his bubbliness.

His head tilts cutely to the side, imploring brown eyes looking at you for one hard second. And then, “I read your forum analysis from Wednesday,” he admits, breaking into a smile. Shy and tiny, bashfully looking down at his desk. “I thought your perspective on the piece was really interesting,” he says, lips pursing together as if he’s suddenly too embarrassed to admit such things to you.

Stunned, all you can manage is one slow nod. “Thank you,” you eventually choke out, trying to ward the heat away from your cheeks as Jungkook sheepishly nods back, cute smile still on his face.

“Oh, please,” he chuckles, raising his hand to rub at the back of his neck. “Don’t thank me!”

It is in this exact moment that you are suddenly made aware of two things.

One: despite his collection of soft sweaters and t-shirts, his bouncy curls and sweet smile, Jeon Jungkook’s body is neither as cute nor as soft as any of his belongings. In fact, Jeon Jungkook’s body is all hard planes and prominent veins. Arms beefy, biceps that bulge beneath the fabric of the short sleeve t-shirt he’s donned today. His shoulders fill out the material nicely, making him look broad and huge, but that’s not even the worst part, because—

—two: Jeon Jungkook is covered in ink. Dark streaks and swirls paint his forearms, curling around his elbow. Every inch of his pale skin is littered with tiny designs. They dance along the back of his hands, over his knuckles, and end at an unidentifiable point beneath the sleeve of his t-shirt. When he tugs at the neckline of his shirt in an effort to readjust it, you hope your eyes are deceiving you and that isn’t a hint of ink by his collarbone.

Your normal composure seems to slip away at the mere thought.

It’s Jungkook’s voice that brings you back, a soft timbre that asks, “aren’t we supposed to have someone else in our group?” You flinch as if you’ve been caught ogling him, never mind the fact he’s started mindlessly shuffling some papers around on his desk, not the slightest bit concerned with you.

“Oh— um, yes. I think,” you stammer, feeling like some creep for ogling your very cute, very sweet classmate. The memory of his inky skin nearly sends a shiver down your spine as you navigate back to the class syllabus. “We’re supposed to have at least three people,” you read off, glancing at the boy on your screen who frowns at the news.

“Do you think they dropped?” Given it was still only the first week of school, probably. There had been a fewer number of people in the call when it started, you remembered. Jungkook sighs, this rather light sound that ends in a hum. “Well, we can always wait a few minutes just in case.”

So you wait, nervously bouncing your leg up and down. It’s not awkward, or at least, not as awkward as it would be with anyone else. The other week you had silently sat with another classmate in a one-on-one discussion and hadn’t uttered a word for five minutes. It wasn’t because you didn’t care about the class, but because said classmate had been tapping away on their phone the entire time and hadn’t even responded to your simple greeting. That was awkward.

With Jungkook it’s more weird than awkward. You can tell the silence makes him uncomfortable because he keeps doing these tiny inhales like he’s about to speak, followed by a little head shake where he seemingly stops himself from saying anything at all. He wants to talk, very badly it seems, but holds back for some odd reason.

He’s scribbling on some sheet of paper, leaning forward to give you a view of the top of his head. From this angle, his shirt hangs forward and a silver necklace falls out from beneath the neckline, thuds against the table. And then your suspicions are nearly confirmed, and oh god, is that a chest piece—

You quickly look away.

Robbed of his handsome face and feeling like you’ll die if you look at his body any longer, you settle for your newly acquired favorite pastime: inspecting your classmates’ rooms over Zoom. Yes, you’ll admit it is incredibly nosy, but what else can you do? You can only look at your professor for so long until you inevitably grow bored, attention drifting off to your classmates tiny windows. And with no professor in sight, just gorgeous Jeon Jungkook, you quickly begin your examination of his bedroom.

Jungkook’s room is pretty much the same as you remember it, rather neat and plain. There’s not a lot going on in terms of decoration, which is a little surprising to say the least. Over the course of the week, you’ve watched your classmates’ dormitories and bedrooms gradually change, decorations and tapestries decorating the walls, mountains of pillows added to their beds. It’s only natural that everyone has an innate need to show off who they are now more than ever, and you thought Jungkook would be the same.

Apparently not.

Aside from the guitar you had spotted on Monday, his little dorm room remains unchanged. Blank walls, grayscale sheets. The same perfectly fluffed pillows and then—

A tiny Keroppi plush smack dab in the middle of his bed.

It’s adorable but a little out of place amongst Jungkook’s rather masculine decorations (or lack thereof). A tiny green doll sitting by his pillows, cute striped shirt and ridiculously dopey smile.

Leaning forward, you unmute yourself and conversationally say, “I love your Keroppi.”

At the sudden sound of your voice, Jungkook abruptly straightens up, glasses practically at the very tip of his nose. Eyes wide, it takes him a second to process your words before jerkily whipping around to stare at the aforementioned item. “Oh,” he jumps, slowly looking at his screen again, lips pulled into a tight line. “Um… it’s not mi—“

“It’s adorable,” you add, propping your chin in your palm, absolutely endeared with the rosy color that paints his cheeks, fades down the column of his neck.

He squirms, hurriedly pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. He looks like he’ll deny it again, nervously nibbling at his lower lip, before eventually he settles with a sigh. “I won it from a crane machine,” he confesses with a sheepish huff of laughter, rolling backwards to the edge of his bed to snatch it from its spot.

(Of course he manspreads as he sits, dark jeans hugging his thighs as he rolls back your way. His arm looks so strong, covered in all that ink, you nearly drool.)

“It’s cute, isn’t it?” he says, abandoning his embarrassment as he shakes the little figure around, makes it look like it’s dancing for you. “My mom said it looks like me.”

At that, you laugh. Loud and boisterous because you were definitely not expecting Jungkook to say that, such an odd but weirdly fitting comparison that has you looking at the doll in his hands with renewed interest. And through the pixelated screen, you can see the similarities: Jungkook does have the same smile as Keroppi.

“Your mom was right,” you agree, wiping a faux tear from the corner of your eye. “Very cute.”

Jungkook’s got this big goofy smile on, shaking his head in disbelief that you would ever dare agree with his mom. Like he’s genuinely enjoying himself, you think, oddly proud to have evoked that reaction from him. Granted, Jungkook always looks like he’s pretty happy during class, but it feels nice knowing that you were (confirmed) the reason why.

A little caught up with the bumbling feeling in your chest, you’re not expecting his next words. “Does that mean I’m cute?” he asks, still with that same dopey smile on his face.

It’s a bold statement you wouldn’t have expected from him, someone who seems content being the world’s friend, but apparently Jeon Jungkook also craves compliments.

Slowly, you nod. “...yes,” you say, trying to keep the tumultuous emotions inside of you at bay while you grant him this one compliment. Outwardly, you give him what you hope is an obviously feigned look of disbelief, managing to lace it with a little amusement as you shake your head at his inquiry. On the inside, your mind and heart are a thundering racetrack, the roar of the engines and the screams of the crowd enough to momentarily make you lose your senses. “Very cute,” you repeat, hoping he can’t hear the same pounding of your heartbeat in your throat and in your ears as you do. “Like a little frog.”

Jungkook graces your robotic response with the most boyish laugh, head tossed back as one loud cackle (because, really, there is no other way to describe the sound that tears itself from his throat) escapes him, curls bouncing back from the movement. “Cute like a frog,” he wheezes, seemingly to himself as he shakes his head with a grin, scooting closer to the camera again. “That’s a new one.”

“You set yourself up for it,” you defend, busying yourself with the papers spread out in front of you before Jungkook can distract you any further. “Anyway!” you announce, neatly lining the papers up. “Our group.”

Jungkook does his best to wipe the glee off his face, but even as he reaches around for his things, it’s still there. “Right,” he agrees, “we have to, um—“ a huff of laughter “—group contract! Or, well, partner project.”

Briefly, you consider calling in your professor to inform him of your missing partner. He had said to let him know by the end of today if something was wrong. But, honestly, you didn’t see a problem with your group the way it was now. While you can only hope he’ll turn out to be as dedicated to his work as you, as it stands now, there weren’t any major red flags surrounding Jungkook’s character.

Besides, you didn’t mind being with him for the rest of the semester.

You nod, forcing yourself to ignore the glimmer in his eyes when he looks at you through the screen. “I think it’s safe to say it’ll just be the two of us, which I don’t mind,” you say, glancing at the time on the corner of your screen to see five minutes have passed since you agreed to wait. “Do you?”

On screen, Jungkook profusely shakes his head, curls bouncing all over the place. “Nope,” he hums. “I don’t mind at all,” he reassures you, resting his chin in his palm as he regards you, and then sweetly adds, “it’ll be nice with just us, __.”

Right.

You gulp, heart fluttering at the dreaminess he exudes through your screen, the soft strand of hair that falls over his forehead, tickles his brow bone when he flashes you another smile. He was so handsome. Before you say anything silly, you quickly attempt to move on. “But it does make us more of a duo than a group.”

Jungkook looks away from his screen for the first time in what feels like forever and you finally let your heart rest for a second. “A duo,” he murmurs, shuffling through his papers. “Like Mickey and Minnie?”

You nearly choke on your spit, coughing to hide the surprise from his rather cute suggestion. He’s not even looking at you, doesn’t even realize the absolute shock he’s thrown you in by comparing the two of you to one of the most famous couples— that’s what they are, a goddamn couple, not a duo! the words mean two completely different things! —in the world. Instead, Jungkook is humming the theme song to Drake & Josh.

This man was dangerous for your heart.

After having felt all the emotions in the world in the span of ten seconds, you eventually gather the courage to say, “sure,” and quickly try to move the conversation along. “We just need to, um, make some ground rules and responsibilities for us to follow.”

Jungkook nods, finally glancing up again, but not at you. He’s glaring at some point behind his computer, brows furrowed together as he begins brainstorming on his own. You try to, really, but his lips pout adorably when he’s deep in thought, and they’re just so pink and look so soft and would feel like—

“Well, we should probably exchange numbers first,” Jungkook says, interrupting your spiraling thoughts with a new topic to spiral over. He tilts his head to the side, brown eyes focused on you.

“Yes, of course,” you stammer, fumbling for your phone as Jungkook lets out a soft yay at your acceptance of his request. Quickly, he recites his number and you type it in with trembling hands into the number pad, giving him a quick call so he can have your number as well.

You save him right away, just his name followed by the class you share with him. Not like you know any other Jeon Jungkooks, and if you did, you doubt anyone could ever leave such an impact like this Jeon Jungkook.

“__, look,” Jungkook calls, that same excitement lacing his already lovely voice, and you raise your head up at the screen again. He’s waving his phone over his camera, so you don’t get to see his face when he says, “It’s a little mouse emoji and a pink bow— just like Minnie!”

Dangerous for your heart and, most likely, the death of you this semester.

chapter seven: “I thought you might want to join me?” (ao3 link)

Michelle doesn’t realize how well and truly fucked she is until her birthday comes around. She’s been doing her very best to pretend everything has been fairly normal, just add in some making out and oral sex to the equation. (Since she went down on him, he’s gone down on her another five times and each one has been absolutely breathtaking. He’s just…so…observant.) In any case, Michelle has been trying to pretend they’re just good friends who blow off some steam together sexually.

She tries to rationalize the way he’ll sometimes grab her hand when they’re walking to class. Or how he’ll wrap his arm around her when they watch Pride and Prejudice and she tries to hide her tears at Darcy’s confession to Elizabeth. Or sometimes the way he stares at her like she’s the greatest thing in the universe and she wonders if she’s even known what it’s felt like to be adored like this.

They’re just friends, though. This is just Peter being the gentlest soul she’s ever known. He wants her to feel loved because he wants her to be happy. As her friend.

Her birthday is always dangerous territory. Because take how much care and love Peter usually gives her and multiply it by one trillion. She wakes up to a light knock on her door and Peter’s made stacks of chocolate chip pancakes, complete with bananas and Nutella that’s been warmed slightly so it spreads more easily. He’s also made her a chai latte. Or…well…he’s attempted to make her a chai latte. And he drew a heart with chocolate drizzle over the foam. He brings all this in on a tray he claims he had May send over and he’s brought the New York Times Sunday crossword.

They spend the morning cuddling together, eating and trying their best to fill out the whole crossword without any clues. (They only need to go to Rex Parker’s solution for three!) He spends the time occasionally pecking her shoulder or check or neck or simply deciding to drag his lips over the skin there. No matter what it is, she gets goosebumps wherever he touches her.

They make out for a bit and it’s soft and gentle and warm. But then he’s pulling off of her and smiling down, telling her to get dressed because he has a whole big day planned. She groans. Because, like, they were making out and she’s tired and doesn’t want to get out of bed. She also quite likes Peter being in her bed. But those puppy dog eyes of his can get her to say yes to just about anything so she gets dressed and lets him drag her around town.

They go to the coffee shop that serves coffee at the perfect temperature. The one right by the coffee shop where she and Peter first freaked out about starting college and making new friends and taking the right classes. The one where she and Peter decided to live together. The barista recognizes them and gives her their order for free.

Birthday: 1. Sadness about Peter: 0.

Afterward they stop by a bookstore that’s stocked up with the new release of an author Michelle really likes. Then, the authorshows up and signs her book and wishes her a happy birthday and says that she owed Tony a favor. And this is just such a cute idea. Your boyfriend really cares about you!

They go to the park and he buys them a blanket and he watches people while she reads her new book. She also manages to drift off to sleep. Peter’s just rubbing her back so nicely and the sun was so warm and her eyes just felt so heavy. But it’s her birthday so she can do whatever she wants.

He wakes her when the sun is starting to set and takes her back home, arm wrapped around her shoulder as they walk to the train. He lets her sleep on his shoulder on the ride back and she does not dream about him because he’s right next to her and that would be dumb…right?

When they get back to their apartment, Michelle’s feeling more sad than anything else. Because she’s so happy. Being with Peter is everything she ever hoped it would be. In fact, it’s better. Because she only ever had vague ideas about holding hands and spending time together and doing sappy shit. Which they do. But they also give each other orgasms and that’s an aspect she never let herself think about before. She has all of it in her grasp, but they’re not quite there. She doesn’t know what to do about it other than feel sad.

Maybe Peter senses that, and that’s the reason he timidly says that he has one more gift for her but only if she feels up to it and it’s totally fine if she’s not. She smiles, tired but fond. “Show me.” That’s when he pulls a small slip of paper from his pocket and extends it toward her with a goofy grin.

She looks down to hide the radiant smile that overtakes her face. She angles her head back up to look at him through her eyelashes, and he looks simultaneously terrified and ecstatic. “Well,” she pushes her shoulders back and gestures forward. “Lead the way.”

His eyes shoot wide and he sputters out a few breaths before “give me one second!” He sprints to the bathroom and only comes out a few minutes later, sufficiently less panicked. “Sorry for the delay, let’s go.” He grabs her hand gingerly and guides her toward their joint bathroom.

It’s set up with candles and he’s playing a playlist she’d created a while ago on his Bluetooth speakers. He’s laid out her favorite book alongside a glass of wine. When she turns her head, he’s smiling, small and shy. “I thought you should have a relaxing birthday evening.”

But then he starts to walk away and she panics, grabbing his wrist to hold him back. He turns with a raised eyebrow. “Did you change your mind?” He turns to face her fully now. “That’s really okay. I can try to plan something else if you want?

She laughs, head tilted back and smile wide on her face. He’s such a nerd. “No, Peter.” But then she’s nervous because he was going to walk away and should she really bother asking? It’s her birthday, though. “I thought you might want to join me?”

He blushes furiously, turning his head to avoid eye contact. “If you’d like.” He glances back at her quickly, a slow growing and hopeful smile on his face.

She answers by pulling her shirt over her head and throwing it carelessly across the room, whipping her head to accentuate the movement. She smiles when she hears Peter chuckle. They strip awkwardly and wordlessly, which still astounds her because they’ve seen each other naked several times by now and still aren’t used to it. But they work through the discomfort and get into the bath, her back to his as they just lie there.

It's incredibly relaxing. But Michelle still feels very unsettled. Especially because she’ll adjust a bit and Peter will gasp and she’ll feel his dick twitch. But this is a bit of uncharted territory. Because they haven’t had penetrative sex yet. Just oral sex. Handjobs and fingering, too. But penetrative sex? Nope. So I've seen a few opinions of ppl who say that ALL Ouma ships are bad because they are "abusive" or toxic because Ouma would "bully" the other and they're unhealthy, etc. I've read so many of ur metas so Ik that's not completely true. But as a fellow Ouma and SaiOuma shipper, what do think of this?

I think it’s an unfortunate fact that many people sometimes takeaspects of a ship which aren’t always the best or the healthiest out of contextand associate them with words like “abusive” or “toxic” when that really isn’tthe case at all.

I’m reminded of the ask I got a while back from an anon whomentioned that people had been calling Tenko a “creepy stalker” just becauseshe was overly eager about making friends with Himiko and needed to learn torespect that Himiko is much slower about opening up to people. Again, it’s aperfect example of a ship that does have flaws getting completely misunderstoodand drastically misinterpreted out of context to make it look a lot worse thanit is.

Any relationship, be it romantic or platonic, has flaws. Orat least, it should. Adding flaws and things to work on and improve and, yes,even occasional unhealthy behaviors makes a ship much more realistic, and givesthe characters something to work on addressing. Relationships without any flawsat all lack depth. That’s not to say they can’t be enjoyable or cute in their easygoingness,but they simply aren’t realistic.

By “flaws” and “unhealthy behaviors,” I want to note that Idon’t mean anything edgy. Ships don’t have to be dark and gritty or angsty inorder to be realistic, interesting, and compelling. Even a ship that seems themost lighthearted and laid back can still have really interesting flaws—these canbe anything from a lack of communication (maybe one character doesn’t tell theother when something is wrong because they don’t want to make them worry) tosimple misunderstandings (maybe a character accidentally speaks for or overanother character because they thought they would like something, and it turnsout they don’t, and they have to discuss that kind of behavior and work on it).Either way, even the most “vanilla” ship can still be fleshed out andinteresting and compelling, as long as there are some flaws in it.

As with individual characterization, of course, the mostimportant thing to keep in mind for writing ships is to not brush those flawsunder the rug. Having a character’s flaws get addressed and called out withinthe narrative serves to highlight the fact that they’re not perfect and thatthey really do have things they need to work on. It keeps the character(s) fromgetting a free pass, and helps convey to the reader that these kinds ofbehaviors are unhealthy and need to stop in order for a healthy dynamic ofunderstanding and trust to ensue.

I would say that Ouma’s flaws as a character get more than called out within thenarrative. Not only is his hostile and antagonistic behavior constantlyportrayed within a negative light even when he’s arguably doing it for “theright reasons,” but Chapter 4 alone is almost entirely dedicated to being “theOuma call-out chapter.”

Despite Ouma’s motivations, it is absolutely true that hebecomes far too fixated on Saihara in Chapter 4. Unable to bring himself totrust anyone else, he decides that if he does ally with Saihara, he wants it tobe only with him and no one else. And to that extent, he tries to force Saiharato cut ties with Momota and the rest of the group, because he believes that he’s“wasting his time” with them and that they’re “dragging him down” by becomingoverly-reliant on his detective skills.

There’s a reason his confession scene in Chapter 4 is such amorbid double-entendre. When he says he’s the kind of person who wants “theperson he fell in love with” to look only at him, even if it means “putting hishands around their neck,” he’s not referring to actually strangling Saihara oranything nearly so grotesque. But it’s still a pretty messed up comment to make(not only because it’s very dark foreshadowing about Miu’s death, as her corpseis discovered in the scene immediately following his confession).

It highlights his unhealthy mindset by that point, thelevels of paranoia that he’s mired up in, and the fact that he honestlybelieves forcibly trying to make Saihara “look at him” and cooperate with himis for the best, regardless of Saihara’s actual wishes or thoughts on thematter. He’s stuck in tunnel vision, completely justifying his asshole behaviorby saying it’s “in order to stop the killing game,” trying to act as though “theends justify the means,” when the simple fact of the matter is that he’sjealous of Momota and the others and wants Saihara to pick him over them. Itsounds very childish, and that’s what it boils down to: he’s being a child andhiding behind his more strategical, logical objectives in order to justify it.

But the thing is, while this behavior is unhealthy and messedup and a perfect example of Ouma acting like an inexcusable jerk, it getsdirectly addressed within the narrative. Rather than just sitting passively andletting Ouma say what he wants, rather than cutting ties with anyone, Saiharaputs his foot down. He tells Ouma point-blank in the Chapter 4 post-trial thathe’s pathetic for acting the way that he is, and that he’s just doing itbecause he’s lonely and jealous that Momota has people who care about him buthe doesn’t.

And Ouma, despite being the world’s biggest smart-ass, triesto respond to that—and can’t. He immediately stops his villain act, says he “gotbored,” and wanders off, because he literally doesn’t have any good retort toSaihara’s accusations. Saihara called him out on his behavior and it was 100%true, and while it’s certainly understandable why Ouma acted the way that hedid, it’s a good thing that he wasn’t just given a free pass for it by thenarrative. In fact, on a first playthrough, the player is actively encouragedto hate Ouma, not only for his actions towards Saihara but for what he did toGonta as well, since it seems as though he’s just acting purely antagonisticand evil for no reason at all.

This kind of willingness to discuss and call out flaws issomething I think is necessary for any character dynamic, be it a friendship ora romantic relationship. See, as long as there are flaws or negative aspects toa relationship, just about any ship has the potential to become “unhealthy.” Butthose flaws don’t make a ship “abusive” or “toxic.” These words are oftenassociated with ships as a kneejerk reaction, because people have either madeoverly hasty judgments based on misinformation, or because people want to skewpublic opinion about a ship a certain way. It’s easy to slap these labels on aship without much proof or justification—and that’s very, very dangerous,because it causes mix-ups and misunderstandings with what actually qualifies asabuse or toxic behavior in a relationship.

As someone who has a lot of firsthand knowledge with abusebecause of family reasons, and as someone who’s currently in a very healthy andloving relationship, I can say that there’s a huge difference between the two.Abuse stems from an imbalance of power, with one person in the dynamic, be it familyor friend or significant other, trying to constantly belittle and undermine theother person, despite the occasional “honeymoon” phase, or brief times whenthey’re nice to you. “Unhealthy” behaviors are just flaws: things you or the otherperson might sometimes do unconsciously, but which can be addressed anddiscussed rationally, and improved, as long as you admit to them and make aconscious effort to do them less often.

Ouma has a lot offlaws. That’s one thing I’ve never tried to deny in any of my meta, nor will Iever try to, because it’s an undeniable fact. But I think trying to say that “all”ships with him, or that saiouma in particular would be “abusive” or “toxic” isa gross exaggeration and fails to address the ways in which Ouma actuallyinteracts with the people he cares about.

Let’s take his canonical interaction with Saihara, forexample. Chapter 4 is Ouma at his most fixated, and Chapter 5 is after he’sdecided to cut almost all ties with Saihara and the others, so that he candeliberately pretend to be the ringleader instead. But let’s examine some ofhis other interactions with Saihara throughout the game. In his FTEs and themain story alike, he constantly encourages Saihara, rather than belittling him.

Whenever Saihara guesses the right answer in a trial orpicks up on some clue or other he’s left for him, he praises him openly.Saihara sometimes wonders if he’s just being sarcastic, because Ouma is a knownliar, but it’s a fact that Ouma only ever makes these comments whenever heseems truly, genuinely impressed that someone is actually following his trainof thought.

He’s deeply interested in Saihara and in trying to figurehim out, and it’s clear that prior to Chapter 4, where he became hell-bent onstopping the killing game “no matter what the cost,” he actually does want toprioritize Saihara’s wishes and happiness over his own—which is, I think,pretty indicative of what a sympathetic person he is at heart.

As an example of what I mean, there’s a point in Chapter 3where Ouma says that he wouldn’t want to actually resurrect Amami for the “resurrectionmotive.” When Saihara asks him why in surprise, Ouma says it’s because hethinks Saihara himself would be happier if they could resurrect Kaede instead,and that he’s “thinking of his beloved Saihara-chan.” He tries to brush it alloff immediately afterwards as a lie, but considering there was no need for himto bring it up in the first place, and considering it matches perfectly wellwith his behavior in his FTEs and other parts of the game, I think he wasprobably telling the truth.

In his FTEs, he’s playful.He’s a brat who wants attention and loves to tease, but really, he’s justplayful with Saihara. His FTEs are some of the best evidence prior to Chapter 6of the fact that, for all his bluffs, he’s little more than a harmlessprankster; he spends the whole time with Saihara “threatening to kill him inthe end,” only to spend every FTE either playing Yu-Gi-Oh, drinking tea, ortying a game of rock-paper-scissors for 100 rounds. And in his final FTE, hewraps it all up by losing the knife game on purpose and letting Saihara win,giving him as many hints as possible to the true way to win the killing gameitself—which is to say, “don’t play it.”

His prison mode ending provides us with direct insight intowhat Ouma is like in a situation where he’s far less paranoid. Without thekilling game ever starting, he remains cautious, but he’s far less distant.Unlike his FTEs where he cheekily but firmly lets Saihara know that they won’tbe hanging out anymore, and where Saihara can tell that Ouma “won’t reach outor let himself be reached out to,” in his prison mode ending, Ouma actuallyasks Saihara to stay by his side, stating that he knows Saihara “wants to knowmore about him” and thinks that he’ll be able to do so if they stay togethereven after leaving Saishuu Academy. Saihara accepts, admitting to himself thathe’s certainly very curious about Ouma and that he doesn’t think Ouma can “lieabout the warmth of his hand”—a metaphor, I think, to the fact that for all hislies and pranks and tricks, Ouma can’t quite lie about his good intentions atheart.

There’s also what little we know about DICE, if that’s anyindication as to what Ouma is like with the people he truly cares about. Whilenot much is certain about them, we do know for a fact that Ouma’s motive videorefers to them as “friends bordering on family, closer to him than anyone, hisabsolute favorite people in the entire universe.” Clearly then, Ouma is verymuch capable of valuing other people and doing things for their sake. Ratherthan being the “evil Supreme Leader” he pretended to be, he was simply a leaderof a group of pranksters—and he loved them very much. This also supports whatwe’ve theorized about Ouma being a very caring, loving person beneath thesurface, despite the fact that he tries just as hard to play the unfeelingstrategist as he does the evil villain.

In the end, it’s this side of Ouma that makes him soenjoyable to ship, in my opinion. There are things he would need to work onwhen in a relationship with just about anyone, but I think it’s a hugedisservice to Ouma’s character to imply that he would be “abusive” or “toxic”to someone he was with. He is, after all, someone who puts others needs abovehis own. Even when he acts like he knows best or does incomprehensible,confusing things, he always emphasizes that it’s “for everyone’s sake.” Hissacrifice in Chapter 5, and the fact that he died when he could easily haveavoided doing so by letting Momota and Maki die instead, shows that clearly, hewould rather put others above himself, even if it means getting himself killed.

That said, there are of course, Ouma ships that I’m not afan of, and which I do think stray into much riskier territory simply becausethey’re on uneven footing from the start. Gonta and Ouma as a ship is a primeexample—not only does Ouma manipulate Gonta into getting killed, but Gontatrusts him implicitly because he’s very naïve and caring, while Ouma is awarefrom the start that he’s treating Gonta like a pawn. Regardless of the factthat I do think Ouma liked Gonta as a person and thought of him as somethingclose to a friend, it’s true that there’s a power imbalance there, and that I’mnot comfortable with shipping them as a result.

But there are plenty of Ouma ships in which he’s on evenfooting with the other party, and which I find interesting and compelling.There’s saiouma, of course, in which Ouma wants for Saihara to chase after himand understand him, to play the detective to his “phantom thief.” I’ve listedplenty of reasons why I enjoy saiouma, including the fact that Ouma is one ofthe main characters to encourage Saihara and push him to grow stronger anddevelop, as well as the fact that it’s based on two characters struggling topuzzle each other out and understand each other.

There’s also oumami and kiibouma, as a few other examples.Ouma and Amami have vast potential, as two characters who wanted to “stop thekilling game,” and who had a lot in common but never got to interact much incanon. Ouma clearly found Amami mysterious and interesting, and would’ve likedto have known more about him, I think.

Meanwhile Kiibo and Ouma are both intentional parallels ofeach other, both of them deliberately set up to represent “hope” and “despair”in Tsumugi’s killing game while coming to subvert their expected roles. WhileOuma teases Kiibo and sometimes can be somewhat of an ass about it, he’s alwayscalled out on it by Kiibo, and most of their interactions are more likechildish banter than anything remotely mean-spirited.

At the end of Chapter 5, Kiibo is the only character whosays outright that he doesn’t think Ouma was lying about hating the killinggame, and who wants to “end the killing game” himself as a direct result ofseeing Ouma and Momota’s sacrifices. And like Saihara, Kiibo is the only otherpicture set aside on Ouma’s whiteboard—clearly, he had a hard time figuring himout too, considering Kiibo definitely had ties to the audience and was soobviously suspicious, but also so obviously had his own free will and sense ofindividuality. The two of them have potential for really interesting interaction,especially as they were put on deliberately similar footing for most of the game.

These are just a few examples, to say the least. There areothers, but this has already gotten very long, so I’ll stop. But I wanted toaddress this topic in full because it’s something very important to discuss, inmy opinion, and it’s important to try and note the difference between flaws andunhealthy behaviors and downright abuse. I gave a urine and blood sample about a month ago for life insurance. I received a call yesterday from the company that takes performs the physical and takes the samples...they said my insurance company wants to more urine samples on two different days. Why is that?? It has me really worried and I can't call the insurance office until tomorrow to find out why. I would assume that they had messed up the sample if they just wanted one more but they want two on two different days. :/ I informed them that I take birth control and sometimes take Ibuprofen. I don't use any other drugs or smoke and very rarely drink alcohol. I also have not been having sex (only with 2 people) and have been tested for STD's and visit the gynocologist every year and am always fine. I didn't receive anything from my insurance company about my blood tests which means those didn't show anything (would only send to me if something wrong). Any ideas about what's up with the urine sample requests???

When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. I was insured on my provisional license with an insurance company which specialised in learner drivers. However, I ended up getting 3 points on my license the week before I passed my test, in what I still think were pretty unfair circumstances. My house doesn't have a drive or a garage and so I had to park my car on the road in front of my house, or on a street round the corner when there were no spaces. As it was my first car I was really excited, and without understanding that I could get in trouble for it, I used to sometimes sit in my car and listen to music with my friends. The week before I passed my test we were sat chatting when a police car came down the road and pulled up behind us. Someone had broken into some allotments nearby and they were questioning us as to if we had seen anything. They searched my car- for tools that could suggest we had done it I presume, and when they found nothing they ran my license and obviously realised I only had a provisional license. I still at this point didn't realise I had done anything wrong, I wasn't driving the car, simply sat in it so I didn't realise I had committed an offence. The police informed me that because the engine was running, I could have been driving or about to drive and on that basis they convicted me for driving without a license. I only got 3 points and a 60 fine due to the fact I wasn't actually driving and at the time I accepted that with relief, I was terrified I'd get a ban or lose my license or get a massively unaffordable fine. I could have appealed but that would have meant going to court and I was only 17 and that terrified me. I declared the points to my insurance company straght away, but due to the nature of the offence my insurance was invalidated and void. I've only just now realised how serious having insurance voided in the past is. I'm supposed to be moving a 5 hours away in a few months for a job, and I have plenty of money saved for car insurance and a car, as without a car, the move is completely unrealistic. Without a car I won't be able to get to work as the hours are unsocial and my job isn't very well connected with public transport at all and so relying on public transport or taxis is simply not an option. I found a car, went to get an insurance quote, and found out that getting insurance is practically impossible when you've had insurance voided in the past. The points don't seem to be a problem, when I tell companies about my points but not about my insurance voided in the past they happily give me a quote. They're expensive, but affordable and it's what I was expecting. However, as soon as I tell them that my insurance was voided in the past they refuse to even give me a quote. I'm completely out of options and I don't know what to do. I need a car, but I can't get insurance as much as I try. I know I was in the wrong, but it seems like the voided insurance is more of a punishment than the points are and surely that isn't right? I'm seventeen years old and I think I have depression. All teenagers are emotional, I get that, but I know this is more. When I'm occupied and around people for a few hours at a time or less, I'm fine and usually even happy. Then when I actually have time to stop and think and let my mind wander, I usually feel kind of hopeless and just very sad. I also have other emotional issues, like the littlest things seem to enrage me. Also, I read somewhere that depression can cause physical issues such as digestive issues (which I have been having a lot of the past four or five months). I cancel plans a lot now, either because my stomach is acting up or I feel too sad to go anywhere and I just dont want to be bothered with people. Ive been sleeping a lot more than normal lately because thats the only time things dont bother me. When I was about thirteen I had an issue with cutting, I would talk to my guidance counselor (which is not an option now because I did home schooling and now am done with school until college next fall) and when she realized that I may have some more serious issues, she called my mom. My mom always brushed it off. She talked to me a total of one time, only when I went to my older cousin and my cousin forced my mother to talk to me. Basically, my mom got mad because I said I didnt feel comfortable talking to her and she refused to send me to a counselor, then she said she would send me to a counselor (at that time I had insurance) but she never actually ended up doing anything. So I went back to doing what I always do, pretending to be fine, and for the most part I controlled it. I stopped cutting until about seven months ago, which was also when all my other issues started popping up. I havent cut myself in a few months now, but I still have the urge to which is not okay. Depression and other mental health issues run in my family, and I keep thinking of one particular relative who got so bad that she took her own life. I know that at some point she must have been like me, where it was difficult but still somewhat manageable, and it just scares me that I could get to the point she was at. I have no insurance, and we have very little money. I know Yahoo Answers isnt the ideal place to seek advice, but I dont know where to go. I only have one true friend that I trusted enough to tell, and obviously she is my age so shes just as clueless as me.
