Cullen is boring and has done shitty things in the past but by DAI, he's at least trying. I'm not going to romance him but he's tolerable. He's also generically attractive so I don't think people are totally pants-on-head crazy for being into him even if he makes me wrinkle my nose.

Solas by contrast is a condescending shitheel who is racist towards his own fucking people, even more racist towards non-elves, named himself "Pride" but doesn't have enough self-reflection to realize when he's being an arrogant dick, is currently attempting a plan that he KNOWS will kill untold amounts of people, and doesn't even have the decency to be attractive.

I've seen other Solasmancers feel the same, though not as many as have heart eyes for him I admit. Also a lot of the ones I see who find the relationship too difficult to rekindle are also the angry ones.

I'm not sure it's as rare as it seems, though. Like if every fic was completely finished, I think we'd find a lot more emphasis on the unhealthy aspects of the relationship. For instance, I don't believe @tel-abelas-mofo 's Pangara gets any happy ending with Solas, but her story isn't finished yet. I really love @neotericwitch 's Lavellan, who romances Varric after things with Solas go to shit, but it's shown in fanart instead of a fic (as far as I know).

(As an aside, love-after-love is incredibly rare in media, a fact which contributed to me ruining my life when I was younger - to find it in fic, a ship-based medium, is, like, shocking. In a good way.)

Another aspect of the scarcity is that a lot of us probably IMPLY a happy ending when really it's much more complicated than that. In my Labor and Loss one shot, for example, the ending could easily be taken as them living happily ever after as one big family. In my head, however, it takes almost a year of effort and honesty on both their parts before Keria is even willing to tiptoe into a relationship with Solas again.

In Keria's actual canon (not written) her being in love with him even while she's actively trying to stop him or kill him is intended to be a character flaw. She knows it's stupid and harmful and very unhealthy for her, but emotions make us stupid. It's a weakness in her character, not a strength. I don't think I really mean for it to be romantic.

And on one last note, we as fans love Solas and the depth of his character and his flaws and all the things that make him a loveable FICTION but would cause any healthy person to run in the opposite direction irl. We make our OCs more perceptive or forgiving or insightful or wiser... make it so that in some way our character can understand where he's coming from and make it work. Irl, I would NEVER date that guy. I wouldn't even make it past the early relationship where you can tell he's hiding something. But I'll be damned if Keria wouldn't sacrifice everything for him.
